The Fourth Annual Turfloop Invitational debating competition hosted by the universities in Limpopo (each year since 2008) was recently hosted by UniLim (University of Limpopo). Teams from the Central University of Technology, the University of Pretoria, Tshwane University of Technology and the University of Venda competed, but the trophy stayed with the team from UniLim. “The competition is held to prove to the debating community that UniLim’s Debating Society is more than capable of hosting the SA Universities Debating championship in 2012,” said Aubrey Moshia of UniLim. OJ finally says goodbye Tzaneen had the distinction, until the municipal elections on Wednesday, of having the longest serving councillor in the country. Alderman Othaniel Jambasa Mushwana has served his second and final term as executive mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. In 1995 he became the chairperson of the Transitional Local Council (TLC) and served in that capacity until the formation of municipalities in 2000, when he was elected mayor of the GTM. He was re-elected in 2006 after SA’s second local government elections in March. He has led the GTM since 1995 until the present. The mayor has won various awards during his tenure, among others he has twice won the Most Proactive Mayor award in Limpopo, the Provincial and National Vuna awards, the cleanest town competition on several occasions and the Impumelelo Award. The mayor, a teacher by profession, has served in various structures of the ANC and

trade unions. He was also a member of the Van Velden Hospital Board and a member of Salga Limpopo’s Finance Study Group. He was the chairman of the Finance Cluster in the GTM, among his responsibilities the mayor presided over Executive Committee Meetings, the performance of ceremonial functions and the exercise of any powers delegated to him by council or exco. Mayor Mushwana, according to his praise singer, “as the first citizen and father of the GTM, was given the mammoth task as a political head of the institution to ensure amongst others the reconciliation of black and white people in particular and of various tribal groups in general for a common nationhood and equal development, a role that he led his council collective with zeal and discipline to the triumph and grandeur of the African National Congress in the sub-region, the region, province and the country.”

The Methodist Church in Tzaneen is home to the Busy Bees — a group that last year and this year gave winter warmers to the pupils of the Letaba school for the physically handicapped. The initiative began last year when they donated blankets to the school. This year they organised for navy blue scarves and beanies, which were all hand knit for the two gr R classes. Various agricultural projects identified by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s local economic development strategy in 2004 for the benefit of local communities have met with limited success. According to the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for 2011/12, Kayamandi Development Services, a SMME company of development economists and planners, was appointed to review this programme. They reported that the hydroponics scheme at Berlin near Letsitele under Chief Mohlaba, which was to have been “revitalised” to the

tune of R3 million, has not been successful. “The infrastructure was abandoned and is now a white elephant. The revitalisation and investigation of failure need to be undertaken,” according to the IDP document. Another was the Tours hydroponic project funded by the GTM to the value of R1,5 million. This “is no longer profitable and the infrastructure is being vandalised.” A subtropical fruit and nut cluster development was identified in 2004 but “no implementation towards achievement of the cluster has been undertaken”.

A project to assist livestock owners on communal land to increase the commercial value of their cattle was proposed in the same year and three sites were identified. “Thus far only fencing has been erected to demarcate the sites”. On the positive side, funding has apparently been obtained for the establishment of the district fresh produce market in Tzaneen — although no further details are provided. (Some years ago a delegation including the mayors of the Mopani District Municipality and the GTM visited European countries at great cost to investigate the setting up of such a market).

A friend sent me this poem and I think it bears sharing! (Like so much of the stuff on the internet it has no source and I haven’t been able to find out who wrote it but all credit is due to them!)

Goodbye mayor Mushwana No damning with faint praise here. But there is no gainsaying that he was a popular man with a common touch, easily approachable, affable and hard-working. He had several uneasy moments, however. One was during the season of namechanging that swept the ANC-led municipalities several years ago. The Tzaneen councillors, apparently with the support of the mayor, proposed that Tzaneen should be renamed “Mark Shope Town” after the deceased ANC activist. They had a point. Mark Shope was born in 1919 in the Letaba district. And he was the recipient of the Order of the Baobab in Gold for “exceptional contribution to the struggle against apartheid and the development of the labour movement”. According to the citation, Mark Shope “embraced the revolutionary philosophy of Marxism-Leninism.” He was a commissar in Umkhonto we Sizwe, and was among the first to go for training in the Soviet Union. He was a leading member of the South African Communist Party. “The memory of Mark Shope remains an inspiration to the organic intellectuals of South Africa and all the many workers who crossed his path.” But the proposal for the name of Tzaneen to be changed was a lousy idea, to say the least. It raised the ire of a large group of citizens and united them in our town’s first protest march. (Others were to follow later when municipal workers paraded through the streets upsetting refuse bins and generally causing mayhem). Business people and little old ladies were outraged at the idea, and more importantly, the Pedi community saw this as Shangaan arrogance and would have none of it. The idea was quietly dropped, in the words of the Mayor, “in the interests of unity.” This newspaper had a number of serious differences with the exiting mayor about council matters over the last seven years. We sized up each other during a couple of stressful meetings, in the end agreeing not to agree on certain important issues. Through all of these he always behaved as a gentleman and in his softly speaking way remained calm. For this we honour him and we hope the next generation will take a lesson from O J Mushwana’s conduct, to always behave in a manner which would not infringe upon the office of the mayor. We wish him well in retirement and hope he will enjoy good health and happiness.

Limpopo is No 1 in job losses The biggest job losses recorded for the first quarter of the year were in Limpopo where 22 000 jobs were lost, according to the latest labour survey done by the Stats SA. Stats SA said traditionally there was a decline in employment in the first quarter, but this year the decline was much lower than the previous two years. Most of the jobs lost during the quarter were in the transport, construction and agriculture industry. Job gains were made in finance, manufacturing and mining. The unemployment rate for all population groups between the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 and the highest increase was recorded among Indians followed by Coloureds.

Provincial spokesperson Tebatso Mabitsela said that these statistics were, to a certain extent, to be expected. “It must be remembered that agricultural jobs are seasonal and construction jobs are usually time defined,” Mabitsela said. He said the Limpopo government is 100% committed to the job creation this year and has a plan to provide 166 000 jobs in public service. He said 40% of these jobs will target young people. The province also has various partnerships with other country’s provinces that share a similar situation. “In this manner we learn from each other,” Mabitsela explained.

“Of course, we also need the assistance of the private sector in creating jobs. People should also work on honing their entrepreneurial skills with a view towards becoming self-sufficient,” he said. Mabitsela further said the Limpopo government has an excellent policy designed to cushion those who are unemployed. “We offer government grants, school nutrition programmes and free basic services.” The province also has a plan known as the Limpopo Employment Growth and Development Plan designed to assist the province to emerge from poverty and unemployment. “We are committed to fighting poverty and unemployment.”

Een van dié baanbrekers, mnr Johannes George (Oom Vissie) Visser, is op 20 Mei reeds 21 jaar gelede dood, maar van sy werk staan steeds soos ongemerkte monumente op die Georges Valley-roete. Sy seun, mnr Tienus Visser van die GTM in Tzaneen, sê hulle het in ‘n padkamp by Broederstroomdrift gebly toe sy pa vir

die destydse Transvaalse Paaie-administrasie as personeelklerk in Eenheid EA gewerk het. Dié eenheid het gehelp om ‘n ordentlike padinfrastruktuur vir Tzaneen en omgewing te skep. Weens Oom Vissie se mynagtergrond is hy ingespan as slagboomoperateur en plofstofdeskundige om kranse vir die bou van paaie oop te skiet. Omdat hy net tot standerd sewe (gr 9) in die skool was, was hy nooit amptelik in dié hoedanigheid aangestel of daarvoor betaal nie. Benewens die skietwerk op Roete 528 (Georges Valley) het

hy ook soortgelyke plofstofwerk op die paaie van die Eiland, Phalaborwa, Lydenburg en Soekmekaar gedoen. “Hy het ons altyd verduidelik ‘n pad moet so gebou word dat die reënwater kan afloop,” en Visser buig sy hand in ‘n

boogvorm. “Lyk my hulle bou die paaie vandag andersom.” Oom Vissie se graf lê in die ou begraafplaas naby die Tzaneendam, ‘n omgewing waarvoor hy so lief was. Sy weduwee, Sannie (76), woon in Kempton Park. Verskeie van die uitgrawings in Georges Valley is destyds deur Visser met plofstof oopgeskiet.

I’ve grown accustomed to his butt

— says author Ann de Ruig of Modjadjiskloof

Beaunice Machitela I’ve grown accustomed to his butt is the unusual title of an interesting new book of which Ms Ann de Ruig of Modjajdjiskloof is the author. When retirement got too boring for De Ruig and her husband, Mr Colin de Ruig, they took up a cycling adventure. They have cycled from Tzaneen to Johannesburg, Beit Bridge to Cape Town and from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The De Ruigs completed all the cycle routes and helped provide more than one million meals,

raised funds for the SOS children’s villages charity and set the Guinness World Record for being the oldest couple to cycle the Beit Bridge to Cape Town route. The design of the bicycle allowed Mr De Ruig to captain and control the bicycle while Ms De Ruig pedalled from the back “and except for the blockage directly in front of me, I immensely enjoyed the countryside going by,” she said. This is where the title came from: the long distance cycling literally made her grow accustomed to her husband’s butt.

While cycling through the country the De Ruigs had to stay at different places every night, and this went on for up to four months at a time. They mostly stayed with Rotarians, except for the West Coast where they stayed with pastors. “The people who hosted us were extraordinary, every shade of our polka dot nation. I would do it again if I could” said Ms De Ruig The De Ruigs have five children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. “Makes me sound so old”, she said jokingly.

She was born in Durban and has lived in Windhoek, Namibia, hence her love for adventure. She finally settled in the mountains of Modjadjiskloof where she was an active runner in road and track races until she started cycling. During the cycle tours the De Ruig couple had a microlight flight over Kimberley, went bungee jumping five times, swinging and even paragliding. All these adventures and more are illustrated in her book I’ve grown accustomed to his butt, which can be read on line as an e-book.

Giyani show returns With the success of the Giyani show in 2010, the Giyani show returns in 2011 bigger and even better. The show is to be held on 16 till 18 at the Giyani stadium.

The Giyani show plays a major role in the celebration of talent in the arts and culture sector, and also in showcasing what Giyani and Mopani District has to offer in terms of tourism, cultural diversity and the booming economic sector. The show is aimed at promoting culture and cultural diversity, promoting and showcasing SME’s (small to medium enterprises) and celebrating youth month in the Mopani district area. Since its inception in 2004 the Giyani show has attracted over 45 000 people each year. The growth of the show is evidence of the increasing demand for a platform of this nature.

Ongelukke in en om Tzaneen

In die tradisie van vakansiedae was daar verskeie ongelukke in die Tzaneen-omgewing gedurende die onlangse langnaweek. Drie voertuie was betrokke by ‘n ongelukke by die verkeerslig op die hoek van CTM in Tzaneen, maar gelukkig is niemand ernstig beseer nie. Nog ‘n ongeluk het op die Lydenburg-pad naby Ledzee gebeur. Dit was ‘n botsing tussen ‘n minibus-taxi en ‘n motorvoertuig. Een persoon is ernstig in dié ongeluk beseer.

Last week they faced Settlers and were presented with the new attire by Mr Charles van der Walt as well as Mr and Ms Prinsloo. It inspired them to a victory. eerste dag ‘n voltal geskiet met 52 kolskote. Hy het tweede in die kampioenskap geëindig. Marietjie Harmse het ook haar nasionale-kleure verwerf. Rikus Warmenhoven het die agste plek behaal en Rikus Harmse die negende plek.

Le’Club van Tzaneen het Saterdag die Lima Landloopliga aangebied en 390 het deelgeneem en medaljes ontvang.
