Nuwe restaurant in Tzaneen Die Hotel@Tzaneen se gewildheid het so toegeneem dat die eienaars hul plan om ‘n restaurant, kroeg en konferensiegeriewe by te voeg, vervroeg en ‘n nuwe gebou hiervoor opgerig het. Dit sal binnekort ten volle in gebruik wees. Rebates on heat pumps now available to small business and homeowners
Eskom launches new rebate programme Eskom Integrated Demand Management (IDM) has added another rebate programme to its hot water solutions initiative. The new rebate on heat pumps, used for residential water heating, will enable access to quality hot water systems and enable homeowners and small businesses to buy the systems at discounted prices. A heat pump uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one medium to another, using mechanical work to move heat from a low temperature source to a high temperature sink. An electrical element geyser uses 3 units of electrical energy and yields 3 units of heat energy to heat water. A heat pump utilises 1 unit of electrical energy and yields 3 units of heat energy to heat water. It uses the ambient air as a limitless source of heat for water heating. Heat pumps have energy savings of 67% when compared to an electrical element geyser. “Heat pump technology has evolved to the extent that it can be used very effectively and safely in
residential applications. “By virtue of their operation, heat pumps use less power, and so represent a guaranteed opportunity for homeowners and small commercial property owners to reduce water heating costs by up to 67%. “Switching to energy efficient technologies and appliances is one of the most immediate and effective ways for consumers to reduce energy consumption and the related costs. However, we recognise that it is not always financially-viable to convert to newer, more energy efficient technologies as this obviously requires some capital outlay, and these technologies can be costly. The aim is to facilitate the installation of a minimum of 65 000 systems by March 2013 at a cost of R250-million. Through this programme, which replaces conventional, energy-hungry geysers with energy efficient heat pumps, Eskom estimates that 54 MW of capacity will be saved. “Through this programme, which enables property owners to buy a heat pump at a discounted price, we hope to make it more viable, and in so doing, encourage more South Africans to replace electrical element geysers with this energy efficient alternative,” says Andrew Etzinger, Senior General Manager of Eskom’s Integrated Demand Management division. The rebated price is available to customers retrofitting or replacing an existing electrical element geyser with a water tank of between 100 litres and 500 litres. The size of the rebate is based on the size of the system purchased. Heat pumps with a tank size of 100 to 300 litres are discounted by an amount of R3 668, and those with a tank size from 301 to 500 litres are dis-
counted by an amount of R4 320. To qualify, the customer must buy from an accredited, published supplier, who in turn must do a full installation. The purchase price of registered systems will already be rebated so the customer is enjoying the benefit of the rebate at the point-of-sale, and thus there is no requirement to submit a claim. Registered and approved suppliers on the programme will claim the rebate amount from Eskom. There are currently eighteen suppliers registered on the programme and this network is continuously expanding. An updated list of suppliers and their contact details is available on the IDM website at www.eskom.co.za/idm. E-mails can be sent to heatpumps@eskom.co.za or customers can call the Eskom contact centre on 08600 37566. “We are pleased to introduce a heat pump rebate programme into the residential energy efficiency mix. It is the natural extension to other hot water management solutions, namely rebated solar water heating and energy and water saving shower heads, which are proving to be highly-successful in bringing down residential energy consumption,” concludes Etzinger. Funding for larger industrial and commercial heat pump projects is accessible through Eskom’s Energy Services Company (Esco) funding process.

Additional info on heat pumps There are two types of heat pump systems namely the integrated type and the split type. In the first case the entire system is contained in one unit and consists of a storage tank and a heat pump. In the second configuration the tank is separated from the heat pump. Heat pumps use the reverse cycle of a refrigeration plant to heat water. In effect, it transfers heat from a source such as air or water to the water which is to be heated. As in other refrigeration equipment, the
heat pump system employs an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, refrigerant gas, and an expansion valve within a closed circuit. Latent heat is given off when the refrigerant gas is liquefied through the condenser and transferred to the surrounding water together with further “sensible” heat loss, effectively raising the temperature of water to a higher temperature. Customers who require further information on the heat pump programme can e-mail the IDM help desk on heatpumps@eskom.co.za,

Thanks to a Food Drive held during May by Curves, a fitness facility for women in Tzaneen, many hungry families will have some food during the winter. For the month of May, Curves’ joining fee was a bag of groceries. The food was meant to be donated to charity and Curves chose to donate it to the Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club. Ms Nikki Mills (Curves), Tarryn Buyst (Lions), Chiana Cave (Curves), Lizelle Cronje (SAVF) and Mr Martin Froist (Lions) can be seen here at the handing over of the groceries to the Lions.

The Letaba Rotary Club supported the request for a wheelchair for a disabled pupil of the Bright Morning Star Primary School in Nkowankowa. The school was visited by members of Rotary to donate a wheelchair and during their visit they received a request to improve the kitchen facilities that cater for 300 children on a daily basis. The project expanded to improve the water system. A new reticulation was installed to connect the kitchen and offices to the existing system. They also donated some books to enable the school to start a library, and here some of the children can be seen enjoying books that have been donated.

Mooi naweek!
I have today written to Provincial Treasury MEC Mr David Masondo to ask him to investigate circumstances under which Julius Malema’s cousin, Tshepo Malema, was awarded a R44 million contract without submitting a formal tender. This was revealed in yesterday’s City Press lead story. The amount of money involved, R167 million in all and the flagrant disregard of the tender rules point out to one thing; the department of health and social development cannot be allowed to investigate its own recklessness and lack of oversight. Mr Masondo’s department, as the custodian of our provincial finances must intervene. This may just be a tip of the iceberg. Scratching deeper into our provincial tenders will reveal even more shenanigans. After all Tshepo Malema’s alleged tender
irregularity comes only a week after National Treasury Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that henceforth his department will be monitoring all tenders over half a million, including those by provincial state departments. In the same week he also pointed out that the majority of tender defaulters who are blacklisted in the National Treasury’s website are from Limpopo. Now the ball is in Mr Masondo’s court. As new Provincial Treasury MEC he must now prove his mantle. He has to show that he has the political will to unsettle the deeply entrenched financial interests of the ANC’s acolytes in our public money. In this regard Mr Masondo’s job description is clearly spelt out for him by the Public Finance Management Act which says he “may investigate any system of financial management and internal control applied by a provincial department or a provincial public entity”. This can only be achieved if he rises above narrow party political interests.
Wisdom needed Farmers in the Greater Letaba Municipality (which for some reason is the name given to Modjadjiskloof) face serious constraints against economic development. This is because nearly half the land contained within its boundaries is under land claim. This is according to the Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan for 2011/2012. The land claim process is a lengthy one and has not yet been resolved by the Land Claims Commissioner. This creates “a high level of uncertainty” among commercial farmers “and their ability to expand and employ more people” but also “deters investment in the area.” Another constraint, which has a greater deterrent effect on small farmers is that half the land in the GLM’s jurisdiction is state-owned and under the custodianship of tribal authorities. In other words, it is communal land. Small farmers have permission to occupy such land but do not have title. This precludes them from raising bank finance for the development of their enterprises. Greater Letaba is one of the smaller municipal areas with a land area of under 2 000 square km. It has a population of nearly 250 000, over a third of which are under 15 years of age. Unfortunately it is the youth that are most affected by the “priority issues” of water, electricity, schools and health facilities, not to mention high unemployment. The majority of households in the GLM are headed by women or children, many of them with no income and entirely dependent on social grants. The new council and the municipal officials will no doubt need an extra helping of wisdom to manage this municipality in such a way that service delivery wouldn’t be compromised.

For the news that matters
You hope to maintain your health without medical cover? The question that many South Africans ask themselves is: Why do I need medical aid? Is it because there are those that believe that medical cover is expensive and they cannot possibly afford it? Is it then perhaps because some think that if any medical emergency were to happen to them they could simply go to a state hospital?
Or is it because there are those who are healthy right now and are delaying the decision until they are older believing that they would only need a medical scheme in their twilight years? Whatever the reason, you cannot hope to protect your future if you do not plan and invest in better prospects. And your health as well as your family’s is a central part of that future. At Sanlam Health we believe that taking care of your own wellbeing and that of your family cannot be left to chance. So, whether it’s about affordability, whether you are sceptical or whether it’s a matter of age, our expert consultants can meet with you to help you make more informed decisions about your medical aid plan. Cost-effective If it is a matter of affordability then you need to realise that the cost of most medical emergencies could very easily put you out of pocket if you are not covered by a medical aid. Hospital costs for medical procedures such as tonsillitis operation, car accident or even chemo therapy for a cancer condition can be quite prohibitive and
might well set you back financially. Our Sanlam Health consultants can introduce you to a range of medical aid packages that are designed to cater for your unique healthcare needs fully understanding your financial concerns. Our members want choice and flexibility. That’s why we’ve designed several innovative healthcare options, under our Bestmed medical scheme, all uniquely structured to suit your healthcare needs. State of health If you hope to have you and your family covered for their medical needs then relying on public health institutions for any eventuality, is to put those prospects at risk. Right now state institutions have to provide services to a growing population and are largely overburdened. Chances are that your medical procedure might well put you on a waiting list. Sanlam Health realises these concerns. Its a reason why we can tell you that the medical scheme which we market and distribute, Bestmed, has a growth strategy, which has put it in the top eight open medical schemes in terms of membership. So, we can negotiate with our service providers to offer you benefits and services that are, rand for rand, the best value compared to other large open medical schemes. • Read more about this next week

FNB Tattoo Competition
TM

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)
Most people that join a gym start off with a big bang, but three weeks down the line you don’t see them anymore. The reason is that most people don’t have enough self-discipline to push them through the hard times. Here are a few tips before joining a gym: 1. Always have a reasonable goal that you will be able to achieve in 3 months. 2. Don’t start exercising too hard and too much in the first two weeks, your body still needs to adapt to the new lifestyle. 3. Try to come to the fitness classes that the gym is offering, they are usually a lot of fun.
4. If you know that you don’t have enough self-discipline make sure you get yourself a gym buddy. Choose your gym buddy wisely, make sure he/she is self-disciplined. 5. The best thing to do is to get yourself a personal trainer. Not only will he show you how to train the proper way, but you will always know that someone is waiting for you at the gym, and you are paying for it, so you don’t want to waste your money by not showing up. And a personal trainer will push you harder than you will push yourself, and we all know that the harder you train the better your results will be.

Willie shows sheer determination
Susan Ettmayr It was through sheer determination that Willie Mathole (45) from Haenertsburg completed the 2011 Comrades Marathon. A month prior to the marathon, Willie fell into a hole and injured his left knee. The day of the marathon Willie had a bad flu that affected his weak lungs. He ran anyway in his brand new Zigtek Reebok running shoes, and halfway through the race, his knee packed up. Gritting his teeth he hobbled the rest of the way to cross the finishing line in just over nine hours. Willie, who is a self-taught carpenter, fashioned a wooden bench that was raffled at the Iron Crown pub. The money raised enabled Willie to catch a taxi to and from KwaZulu-Natal and he spent five days in Ballito. Willie ran the Comrades for the first time last year and finished in a time of 7 hours and 40 minutes. He is determined to overcome his knee injury and run again next year.
