Missing: One Wetland
A storm
YES 12 September 2007: Para Para-
graph 2: “It was however discovered that the above mentioned activity is taking place within the substantial wetland.”
NO
2 November 2007: Paragraph 1.4: “The confirmation by DWAF that characteristics of a wetland was not found on both the site and wetland map for Limpopo Province.”
Is this a wetland, or is it not? is brewing in Tzaneen about alleged commercial and residential developments within wetlands. Conservationists, politicians and private landowners are joining hands to launch a full investigation into the matter. The new Lifestyle Centre being erected next to the R71 (opposite Sasol) is very much in the center of the focus. However, the development next to the Mediclinic (including the Ivory Tusk hotel and a row of doctors’ surgeries), the planned Letaba Mall, Phadima’s Aqua Park Country Estate and the planned hotel in the vlei opposite the Aqua Park Mall are mentioned as being under the microscope. A Bulletin team are investigating these matters. Stacks of documents that have been obtained over the past year need to be studied. We are also waiting to be granted certain interviews to hear different sides to the unfolding drama. Wild allegations are made and the situation is also being watched closely by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s new management component, as well as the new mayor and her team. We will henceforth report on the tricky situation of claims and counter-claims. Watch us next week!
Meet ‘Bushveld Bull’ on page 12, an exclusive new cartoon strip by seasoned cartoonist Mike Coles. The strip will be published weekly in the Bulletin and some of the other newspapers in the LiN Media Group of ten community newspapers covering Limpopo. It is brought to our readers to bring a laugh a week in troubled times.Enjoy it!

Daar was Huidiglik Onrijn. Tyd sal leer of hy gaan sing en of hy weer iemand anders se snaar sal laat breek. “How low can you go?” ’n vraag?

Acutts says farewell to one of their star estate agents, Ms Joyce Maponya. She has been an estate agent in Tzaneen for four years (she started at Era and then moved to Acutts). She wishes to thank all her clients and coworkers for their support during her years as an estate agent and wishes God’s blessing upon them for the future. Acutts thanks Maponya for her loyal services and wishes her all the best with her relocation.
Councillor laid to rest
Employees and associates of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality attended the memorial service for councillor Asnath Mogoboya in Lolo Village. She was elected as councillor for ward 33 in 2006 and was re-elected during this year’s local government elections. She served in the infrastructure portfolio committee and was according to her colleagues constantly fighting for better service delivery for her community. Mogoboya was a member of the ANC Women’s League and was chairperson of the organisation in the Ramorega Branch between 1990 and 1994. She was also the chairperson of the Mafakeng Thabina Tourism Project as well as of the Naledzi Advisory Committee that deals with soil conservation in the Mogoboya area.Acting GTM mayor Mr Richard Shingange said “she died at a time when councillors were needed the most, with the new amendment to make all councillors work full-time to ensure effective service delivery”. Mogoboya leaves behind two sons, Stanley and Tshepo.

Simon is steeds kritiek Louis Roux
louis@bulletin.us.com
Kaskarre gaan weer stof opskop
Navrae: Gerhardt Vorster by 083 457 8824 of Burnedine Henning by 072 045 9093 of 015 345 1600. Round Table Tzaneen inducted two new pipe-liner’s during their recently held meeting. A pipe-liner is an individual whom has shown interest in becoming a Tabler, attended two business meetings, two social meetings and helped out at a project. The two gentleman who have been inducted are messrs Henco Prinsloo and Henk van Wyngaadt. They attended school in Tzaneen and both matriculated in the years 2002 and 2003 respectively. Mr Bruce Mogg, chairman of the Round Table Tzaneen, are seen here with the two new pipe-liners.
The SA National Blood Service’s collections have dropped drastically, resulting in a 2,2 day blood stock — far less than the five day stock that is required to ensure that the country’s demand is met. The SANBS has asked all hospitals and medical personnel to stop selective surgery, as they are unable to meet the emergency demand for blood, let alone planned surgeries. So please donate blood now!

Skoolbus gesteel
Plaaspryse is ietwat meer ingewikkeld as dit kom by prysbepaling. Hier speel ligging nie so ‘n groot rol nie,
Wildsplase verkoop teen nie minder as R6 000 per hektaar nie. Vir berggrond — waar boere hoofsaaklik bloekomof denneplantasies vestig — is ‘n gemiddelde prys tans R8 000 per hektaar.

beaunices@bulletin.us.com
A delegation led by deputy minister of health Gwen Ramakgopa and finance minister Pravin Gordhan visited the Letaba Hospital on behalf of the president last week. The delegation was escorted by Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, and Mr Joshua Matlou, mayor of Mopani District Municipality. The delegation was part of President Jacob Zuma’s visit to Limpopo to undertake the Presidential Performance Monitoring and Evaluation programme. Zuma personally visited a Hospital in Vhembe and one in the Capricorn District. The ministers and entourage visited different wards stopping to ask the patients and doctors what problems they experienced and how they dealt with the issues. The hospital said too many patients who could be treat-
ed at clinics but opt to come to the hospital first, resulted in referrals of patients back to the clinics. It was also said that over 400 patients visit the hospital’s dispensary per day. Among the highlighted successes of the hospital were the work done by the staff of family medicine and specialists who go out to the communities for consultations. This has reportedly reduced the waiting period for patients. Ramakgopa encouraged doctors and staff to communicate properly with patients. She said doctors should always be willing to explain to patients their conditions and patients should tell whoever is treating them their concerns. The delegation will meet with the president to discuss the findings of the visit, so as to measure progress made by government in a bid to improve the state of the public health system. The aims of this programme are to increase life ex-

Not good enough Disgruntled shopper from Tzaneen writes: I am an avid shopper at Chechers in Tzaneen. Everytime I collect my trolley, I head straight to the Manager to complain about the filthy trolleys, not to mention the state of the trolleys - dilapidated and mostly uncontrollable with buckling wheels. The Manager always shrugs his shoulders, and says that the hawkers are to blame for the dirty trolleys. Surely the store should have a supervisor and cleaning staff to see to it that the shoppers who shop at their store get clean hygienic trolleys to put their wares in. I am so s everytime I put my veggies, dairy and meat products in the trolley — not to mention the diseases I may “pickup” from the filth in the trolleys. If the “shoppers” boycott Checkers for a week until this problem is resolved, maybe the Manager will wake-up and heed to the “shoppers” complaints instead of shrugging off the problem. • We contacted the regional manager of Checkers for comment and he undertook to look into the problem as soon as he is back from holiday in about a week — Editor
Give that man a Bells Roy Hurter van Tzaneen skryf: “Time waits for no-one”, lui die gesegde.
Tongknopers
‘n Rolprent draai of word vertoon.
En dis hier waar ek sien dat “time has passed me by”, soos in totaal! My reddingsboei in die stormagtige tegnologiese oseaan! “Give that man a Bells,” sê ek.
Aapgetalle benodig beheer

Leaves and young shoots are most important in the vervet diet, but bark, flowers, fruit, bulbs, roots and grass seeds are also consumed. The mainly vegetarian diet is supplemented with insects, grubs, baby birds and sometimes rodents and hares (AWF:Wildlife :VerVetmonkey) Akkedisse, koggelmanders en verkleurmannetjies verdwyn ook uit ons omgewing. Ek was die afgelope naweek by Letaba Hospitaal. Goeie Hemel!
The power of prayer is really amazing, if we use it for unselfish means. It is no use asking God to make us a millionaire if we are not prepared to also work towards this goal. In the past few weeks, after a request for prayer for Simon Venter, God has been faithful as always and heard us. At first all seemed to be going wrong for Simon, and yes, his life was hanging on a thread. But suddenly a change seemed to be taking place. Simon was starting to get better. Now one can always speculate as to the reason for his improvement. But I know that God intervened, He heard our prayers. He started the process of healing. Thus all praise and glory must go to Him and Him alone. This mighty power of prayer has once again been seen to be very effective. Thus although prayers are still needed for Simon, we need to extend our prayers. We need to pray into everything that is wrong in this world. I know God will hear us and He will do what is right for us. But we must be diligent in our prayers and not only pray in time of need. We need also to give Him the thanks for what He does for us every day. Although we might accept things as taken, God is involved in everyone of our lives. Pray constantly and reap the benefits. God Bless You All

Nee, dis of “fêbjoelis” of “ô-hsem”. (Bliksem!). My ma was hoeka oor die veertig toe ek gebore is. • Brief verkort — Redakteur

Snyman is bereikbaar by 082 653 5820, of sy kollega, me Theresa Stroh, kan by 082 905 6474 geskakel word.

Pastor thinks his hair helps him heal the sick There is nothing much out of ordinary about Pastor Risenga Novela’s hair, which pulls down to his waist — just like that of Rustafarians, for whom growing hair is a culture. It is when he turns that one would start to notice a long greying ponytail swinging about his waist. This hair, according to him, is the source of his powers to heal people at his church, the SA Apostolic Zion Church in Roadhouse Village near Malamulele. At 69, Novela says he has never cut his hair since he was nineteen, about
43 years ago — because he believes it possesses special powers which he might lose if he ever shave it off. Novela says he embraced Christian religion in 1949 at the tender age of eight through a close relative, Elias Msisinyani Xihaxwa who herded cattle and goats with him. “He had just adopted Christian religion at the time, and taught me many things about life including how to fear God,” explained Novela.
Presidential team visit Letaba Hospital Mr Joshua Matlou, executive mayor of the Mopani District Municipality and Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, the executive mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, are seen here with Dr Gwen Ramakgopa, the deputy minister of health, Mr Pravin Gordhan, the minister of finance, and Dr Joe Muhlari, the Chief Executive Officer of the Letaba Hospital in Nkowankowa at the hospital last week. The presidential delegation was monitoring and evaluating progress made by government during a visit to some of Limpopo’s hospitals. President Zuma personally visited two hospitals in the province (in Vhembe and Capricorn districts).
“In my early years as a herdboy I didn’t like cutting my hair, but that had nothing to do with
religion,” he went on. “But since 1968 when I read the story of Samson and similar verses in the Bible, I found even more reasons not to cut my hair.” Novela says he does miracles when he prays for the sick in his church. He thinks God has vested the powers of healing in his hair and he fears he might lose it should he shave. “I know that cleanliness is next to God, and as such I am keeping my hair clean. I comb it properly every
day to make sure it stays clean,” he said. When the lengthy hours of preaching and praying for the sick ends, Novela comes home to his wife and nine kids. He is also known to be a hard worker at farming, and owns a small plot at his village where he plants vegetables. The secretary of the church, Mr Norman Macebele, said he knew pastor Novela since twenty years ago and has never saw him with his hair cut. “He is one of our trusted pastors and we are proud of him,” said Macebele. — Orlando Chauke

Hundreds left unemployed after tree planting project collapsed

Woman stabbed to death in Tzn CBD The police confirmed the murder of a woman (40) at about 18:30 on Tuesday night in Skirving Street, Tzaneen. The woman and three others were reportedly approached by a man in his vehicle, who asked the women a series of questions. He then addressed the victim, asking if she was not afraid of getting raped since he had seen her there the previous night. The two reportedly had an exchange of words and the man
then pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman. The other three called for help, carried the lady’s body out of the road and called the police. Emergency personnel were also called and they confirmed her dead. The suspect was arrested later on that night on the road leading to Talana Hostel. The suspect (39) is facing a murder charge and was due to appear in court yesterday.

Hundreds of workers that were working for a tree rehabilitation project at Gawula Village near Giyani have been left jobless since the project closed its doors in March 31 this year. The project works on replanting indigenous trees in the areas where trees have been wiped out by human activity, thereby promoting ecological restoration in those areas. It was the first of its kind in the province, and it employed 260 workers from fourteen villages around Giyani. According to Mr Mike Chauke, the supervisor of the project, the workers were laid because the contract which the government had with the contractor that ran the project, has expired. Mr Dave Turner, the director of Environmental Offset Investments (EOI), the company that had been commissioned by environmental affairs to run the project since 2006, says the project is being transferred to the municipality. According to him, the project never meant to provide permanent jobs in the first place, but to give people temporary jobs so that “while they’re working they get trained in various skills — and thereafter it’s up to the people to take the skills and go look for permanent jobs elsewhere”. Mr Joshua Kwapa, the spokesperson for the department of environmental affairs in Limpopo, said “the department has not terminated the project, as alleged by the workers”. “The project had a time frame which elapsed on 31 March,” he explained. “Our roll was to rehabilitate trees, which we did successfully – as you can see, the trees have been planted, and there’s a nursery. Now we’re in the process of handing over the project to the owning agency — in this case the Greater Giyani Municipality. The GGM must now decide how to continue with it.” Kwapa said the handing over would be done next week. “Our wish is that the GGM absorb us or continue the project, since I can’t support my family if I’m without a job,” said Chauke. — Orlando Chauke

A hilarious fun evening enjoyed in the village LEFT: Sisters Kerry and Bronwyn Blandy had a ball and enjoyed every minute of the fun. RIGHT: Marni van Emmenis drinking her teapot brew. FAR RIGHT: The owner of The Red Plate restaurant in the village, Colleen Pirie, added to the fun.
Months of planning went into a novel occasion at The Red Plate restaurant in Haenertsburg. The hilarious Friday evening was titled The Mad Hatter’s Tipsy Tea Party. Guests came clad in crazy hats, many of them ingeniously hand made, and partook of much head smacking brew drunk out of teapots through straws. One guest came dressed as a policewoman with a bell attached to her glass mug. Every
time she rang the bell, she let out a shrill whistle. Two of the lady guests crawled under a table for a good hour or so and had their own private Mad Hatter’s Party with teapot and straws. Inexpensive snack baskets with chicken pieces, spring rolls, samoosas and chips soaked up the alcoholic content lurking in the teapots. The event lent itself to some hilarious behaviour. — Report & photos by SusanEttmayr
Letaba hospital bids Mmetle farewell The staff of the Letaba Hospital said goodbye to their colleague Ms Dikeledi Mmetle. After her appointment as the mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality her duties at the hospital had to be put aside to further what she calls her calling. Described as dedicated, available, approachable and advisable by her ex-colleagues, the new mayor seems to be a fitting
addition to the GTM’s team. Mmetle spoke with great emotion as she encouraged her former colleagues to trust in God and know that through Him they could achieve anything. She extended her gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr Joe Muhlari, for his support and understanding and for allowing her to pursue her political career.

Live healthy and grow old Young people should avoid an unhealthy lifestyle, using drugs and alcohol at a young age, if they want to grow old, says Mopani district acting mayor Helen Moshobane. She spoke at the district’s awards ceremony to honour those that had reached hundred years of age, held recently in Phalaborwa. The function was attended by people who celebrate hundred years of age, from around the five municipalities in Mopani district. However, due to age some of them couldn’t make it to the event, and had sent representatives to receive the awards on their behalf. Moshobane said the current youth “need to learn from the elderly people and adopt a safe lifestyle — it’s only then that we would have a society with a long life expectancy.” Speaking after the event, Mr Thomas Mogale, who has reached the age of 101 and was still strong enough to be
present, supported the statement by Moshobane that the “key” to a long life is a healthy lifestyle. “In my time we would herd cattle, walk long distances, and eat healthy because there were no drugs,” he said. “Alcohol was meant for men, not for boys. But today even ten year old kids boast that they have tried alcohol.” The oldest person to be mentioned was Mr Jack Mokwevo from Tzaneen at 108! However, he could not attend and his son received the award on his behalf. Mr Shadrack Mogoboya spoke on behalf of the elderly people and said they were very grateful for the awards. “This is a first for us – we’ve never heard of anyone getting awarded for being old!” he said. — Orlando Chauke Acting district mayor Helen Moshobane hands over an award to Mr Thomas Mogale who celebrated 101 years.

landbouers was.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)
Many people say they would like to lose weight. But what is weight? When you get on a scale, what is that scale telling you? Is it telling you how much fat you have? No, it’s telling you how much TOTAL mass you have – including muscle, bones, water, lunch… and fat. It’s important NOT to get addicted to the scale, because the scale doesn’t tell you what that weight is made of. Some individuals lose weight when they start working out. Others stay the same, but lose inches. That’s why it’s important to look at other factors than just the scale, and ask yourself: “How are my pants fitting?” or looking at percentage body fat.
Old Mariepskop boy Reinhard van Zyl returned home to a very excited Hoedspruit crowd on Tuesday after winning the gold medal in the javelin for boys in the World Youth Championships in France. The South African team did exceptionally well and were placed sixth overall, beating the likes of Great Britain, Australia, France and Germany. Reinhard attended Mariepskop Primary School and is a Hoedspruiter in body and soul. He also attended Merensky High School before moving to Pretoria where he is now in grade 11 in Waterkloof High School. Crowds of supporters gathered in Hoedspruit to give him a hero’s welcome home. Reinhard said he did not expect to win at all and was very surprised. “I dreamt the night before that I would win the bronze medal,” says Reinhard. His expectations were far surpassed when he threw the winning distance of 82,96 m, improving his personal best by 11 m. This athlete is definitely going places. On the field at the championships he was approached by a recruiter from the University of Nebraska, offering him a scholarship at this American university. “After school I want to study sport science and then citrus farming” says Reinhard. The SA team won another gold medal as well as two silver and one bronze.
