Spoghuis verwoes in brand

Driving really takes skill — the second lesson in the simulator attest to this point. Unlike the first lesson where the learner driver (me) has to show her innate skills behind the wheel, the second lesson tests all the knowledge. I had to sit in the simulator to drive. The simulator is connected to a computer that scores or rates the learners as they drive. The learner will be scored on 26 re-

quirements i.e. if the parking brake had been applied, obtained clutch control, accelerated when necessary, maintained speed limit and correct gear selection. Tzaneen is one of the first towns in SA to have this simulator technology available. Afsim can be found at 25 Boet Lombard Street in Aqua Park, Tzaneen, or call them on 079 726 9997. — Beaunice Mnisi

Three big fires so far, Lord let there be no more. This was the prayer on everyone’s lips at prayer hour organised by the Letaba Fire Protection Association. Farmers and concerned residents gathered in Tzaneen last Friday to pray for the fire season. Four ministers from different churches in and around Tzaneen led the crowd in prayer and read messages of reassurance from the Bible. The statistics reveal that two people died in one of the fires. The

purpose of the prayer hour was to pray for the coming three months, known as the fire season. People, especially those living on farms, are encouraged to be extra vigilant. Seen here are Mr Butch Baker (base manager) and Ms Maritza Nel (public relations officer) at the back and Messrs Trevor Phillips (chairman) and Johan Potgieter (administration) of the Letaba Fire Protection Association. They attended the prayer hour.

Quads face bleak future as trust account fails When single mother Patricia Ambani (30) of Khubvi Village gave birth to quadruplets in September last year, the unusual birth touched many hearts — and people soon volunteered to assist the woman raise the kids by opening a trust fund. But a year later, the quads are still living in poverty and the future is bleak. What makes the matter worse is that the committee to oversee and run the trust fund has been disbanded. According to Patricia’s eldest sister, Nhangweleni Ambani, the problem is so serious that even formula milk for the babies is a problem, since the milk they get from the local clinic once a month is not enough. “Sometimes the milk doesn’t last till month end. We then have to beg people for money to buy milk,” she said, adding that “the trust account only has R3 000 which we save for emergency situations should one of the kids get sick.” Asked why the trust account committee was disbanded, Ambani said the people lost interest and eventually everyone just disappeared.

It is time A. Nonny Mouse of King Edwardrylaan, Tzaneen, writes: “It is time said the walrus, to talk of many things, of sailing ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings.” I cannot remember who composed this poem but it appeared in the Eastern Province Herald, daily, many years ago. Rather apt I thought. The crossword puzzle was excellent but no, I did not complete it, although with hindsight I should have. Die toewyding en lewenstyl van die monnike het hom so beїndruk dat hy tot inkeer gekom het.

More than a hundred scholars had their eyes tested and reading problems, low vision and even a cataract were identified. Early detection has incredible results to reduce eye problems that can ultimately lead to blindness. Here Strauss can be seen with a group of Plasies before testing their eyes.

Cable thieves to stay behind bars for long time

Police Inspector Thomas Makhubele is seen here with copper cables that were found in possession of the suspects on a bus to Johannesburg

Police hail the sentencing of two cable thieves who were sentenced to seven and eight years imprisonment respectively, for stealing cables of the water purifying plant at Nsami Dam, Giyani, last year. The suspects, Reckson Sibanda (40) and his accomplice, Lybon Mabasa (26) were sentenced to eight and seven years in prison respectively in the Giyani regional court. Their arrest followed a series of cable thefts at Nsami’s purifying plant that left the community of Giyani without water for days. According to W/o Thomas Makhubele, the police received a tip-off from the community that the culprits were preparing to leave for Jo’burg by bus, to sell the cables and immediately set up a trap for them.

“We caught the two suspects with paper bags full of copper cables inside one of the buses that were heading to Johannesburg, just in time before they left Giyani,” explained Makhubele. Speaking after the sentencing, Makhubele said “this will send out a good message to other criminals who might have intentions to steal cables”. Meanwhile Mopani District Municipality, through spokesperson Mashadi Mathosa, issued a media statement expresion their support for the sentencing, saying stealing of pipes was one of the problems that has caused the unstable water supply in Giyani. Five cable-theft incidents occurred at the same plant since 2007. — Report and photo: Orlando Chauke

Polokwane’s recent mob violence which left a 32 year-old Zimbabwean man dead and others without homes after six RDP houses belonging to them were burnt down, has caused a wave of fear among Zimbabweans living in Limpopo. The violence apparently erupted after the locals accused Zimbabwean nationals of perpetrating crime in their area. Sixteen community members including an ANC councillor, were later arrested and charged with murder, arson and public violence. However, they were later released on R5 000 bail each while their case was postponed for further investigation — a move which fuelled further fears that another attack might be planned. Many of those who live in Giyani, where Zimbabwean nationals are found in numbers, say what scare them most is that the incident hap-

Another Zimbabwean who sell her wares in Giyani town, Ms Maria Musasa, said since the incident she has no peace of mind. ie span van die voedingskema by die Laerskool Tzaneen is waarlik van die staatmaker-dames van Tzaneen.

Murder in cells investigated The police in Haenertsburg are investigating two counts of murder after the death of two awaiting trial prisoners. The victims, Cassius Mashele (20), and awaiting trial for rape in Ritavi, and Agreement Mongwe (20), awaiting trial for murder in Ritavi, were allegedly assaulted and died in the Haenertsburg police holding cells between 13 and 14 June. The two were in separate cells. It is alleged that they were assaulted by fourteen awaiting trial prisoners. The Independent Complaints Directorate was informed of the incident in order to conduct independent investigations. Fourteen suspects were identified and have already appeared in court on

counts of murder. The cases of murder were postponed to 6 September pending further police investigations.

Oprah Winfrey’s “new Limpopo school” is the talk of green architecs and educationalists all over the country. Nestled deep in the rugged folds of the Soutpansberg in the small village of Gogogo, four learners of the Vele Secondary School recently visited Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge west of Louis Trichardt to learn how to become junior tour guides for their school. The school was practically rebuilt with the help of the Oprah Foundation and is scheduled to open officially by the end of this year. Although the Oprah Foundation donated money towards certain facilities, it is not Oprahowned but a normal public school with an eco-efficient and learner-centric school design. The main characteristics of the school are efficient use of energy, waste and water in combination diums uitstal en te koop aanbied. with special care given to social Handwerk, naaldwerk, kuns en relevance.

Passive and low-energy design also create naturally lit and ventilated classrooms that are warm in winter and cool in summer. The layout of the grounds was designed to facilitate shared use of school facilities by local communities and surrounding schools. Food gardens were developed to supplement the school’s nutrition programme. Design and construction features are now being integrated into the school curriculum. For example, the plants and seeds for the green roofs were sourced by the learners themselves and now serve as insulation and a wildlife habitat for students to study. “Academic performance of the school has improved since we have moved into the new school,” says Gr 9 pupil Thendo Mushaya.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

The most common symptoms for type 1 and type 2 diabetes are as follows: Fatigue is a cause for concern. Fatigue signals that the body is not efficiently using glucose for fuel. The body will switch over to burning the fat in the body as its fuel source. This causes the body to use more energy and the result is constant tiredness. Commonly, intense hunger is found in those with diabetes. This is due to the fact that the body does not realize why the sugar it ingests is not being processed, so it is simply asking for more food to help remedy the problem. When the body has high insulin levels, the body thinks it needs to stimulate hunger. Slow healing of wounds in the proper time is

another sign that you should be concerned about high blood sugar levels. The high sugar levels prevent white cells from functioning properly. White blood cells fight bacteria and clean up dead tissue and cells. When the white blood cells are not working properly, it takes wounds longer to heal and there is more of a chance of infection in the wound. Frequent infections also may be a sign of poor blood sugar control. If you experience weakened or blurry vision, you should have your blood sugar levels checked. This isn’t a symptom of diabetes alone, but is widely known as a symptom of high blood sugar levels as well as itching, especially around the groin.
