The two planes were approximately 150 metres apart upon impact. Both planes were fully fuelled, a likely contributor to the clearly visible explosion footprint. A mere one hundred metres higher and they may have cleared the mountain top altogether. It is of course difficult to say for certain because at this stage it is uncertain about which factors contributed to the disaster. It was foggy and visibility was low, but other forces like mechanical problems have not yet been ruled out.

Me Margaret Roscoe van Randburg het haar man twaalf jaar gelede in ‘n vliegongeluk verloor. Haar seun en kleinseun, Peter en Stuart van Oldenborgh, was onder Sondag se slagoffers. Mnr Siem Venter se vrou, Martie, en sy skoonma, me Lenie Degenaar, was onder die mense wat gesorg het dat die operasionele taakspan en al die helpers ge-reeld kos en lekkerf warm koffie gekry het. Me Gillian van Oldenborgh van Johannesburg het deur mnr Dave Protter namens al die familie en naasbestaandes van die dertien slagoffers haar dank teenoor Tzaneen se gemeenskap oorgedra, vir die groot bystand wat verleen is. Hul dank strek ook na die landelike gemeenskap wat uiteindelik tot die opsporing van die ongelukstoneel gelei het.

Macadamia farmers to meet Relations between macadamia farmers in general and in Limpopo in particular will be strengthened by a conference in Chimoio later this month held by the SA-Mozambique agricultural investment initiative. Prominent Tzaneen macadamia farmer and nurseryman Howard Blight is the conference chairman which is being supported by political and agricultural heavyweights. The Prime Minister of Mozambique will open proceedings on 25 August at the Mill Park Hotel in Chimoio. The conference will also be addressed by the Governor of Manica Province, the Mozambique Minister of Agriculture and a dele-

gate from Nepad (New Partnership for Africa’s Development). Mr Richard Hurley of the SA Macadamia Industry will discuss the potential for growing this crop in our neighbouring territory and AgriSA’s vice president, Dr Theo de Jager, will speak on the facilitation of agricultural investment. Other delegates will cover legal requirements, transport facilities and rail and harbour developments. High profile visitor

The Public Protector, Advocate Thulisile Madonsela, and members of her team visited Nkowankowa on Tuesday (as part of a three day visit to Limpopo). The purpose of her visit was to educate people on the services offered by the public protector’s office and how people can access these services. Madonsela is SA’s third public protector (since 2009 and after being unanimously voted in by all parties in parliament). She said that she and her team strive to ensure accessibility and there are now plans underway to establish satellite offices to ensure better access. The attendees responded with questions, complaints and some with gratitude for her visit and the work done by her office. Sex education and sex awareness is needed in most of the villages in the district, says the SAPS’s Cluster Commander in Tzaneen, Gen Khonbomini Maggy Mathebula. Children between the ages of nine and twelve are found having sex during school hours. Rape incidents are getting more in Dan Village and Lusaka. “Parents should take better care of their children, and not leave them under male supervision,” says Mathebula. Operations are being implemented to curve the high level of rape cases at Ritavi and Bolobedu. Crime awareness and rape education programmes are held in order to inform the public and prevent rape and abuse. The current statistics of contact crime are shocking. People are assaulted, stabbed and beaten at taverns and other liquor selling premises. “We are going to increase visibility of the police to curve this problem. “We are also going to make sure that the places where the attacks occur have legal liquor licences,” she says. Somalian shop owners are attacked regularly in their shops, and reports show that they are usually attacked around 20:00, as their shops close quite late. Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het op Donderdag 11 Augustus 2011, ‘n e-pos van die SA Rugbyvoetbalunie ontvang, gerig aan die afrigter van die Limpopo Cravenweekspan, mnr André Hay. Hierin is hy meegedeel dat twee spelers van die Limpopospan in voorlopige toetse positief getoets is vir die gebruik van verbode middels. Hierdie spelers sal op 23 Augustus 2011 aan verdere toetse onderwerp word. Een van die spelers is ook ‘n eerstespanspeler van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster; die ander speler is ‘n leerling aan ‘n ander hoërskool. Die res van die Limpopospan wat getoets is, insluitend ook ander spelers van Ben Vorster, se uitslae was negatief. Omdat Ben Vorster as skool en ook die skool se afrigterskorps hulle nog altyd van bovermelde praktyke gedistansieer het, is die betrokke speler van Ben Vorster dadelik uit die eerstespan weggelaat, wat die afgelope naweek in ‘n kwart-eindstryd teen die Hoërskool Standerton gespeel het. Die skool is by monde van mnr Piet Swart, die skoolhoof, op rekord dat hy persoonlik reeds vroeër in die jaar ‘n mondelinge versoek aan die beheerstrukture van hoërskolerugby gerig het, dat sodanige toetse op ‘n steekproefbasis vir alle skole gedoen behoort te word. By navrae het die seun wat geïmpliseer is, bevestig dat hy die middels deur eie toedoen bekom het, by ‘n verskaffer aan die Rand. Die afrigters en die skool kan dus kategories verklaar dat hulle geen aandeel hierin gehad het nie. Voorts sal daar sekerlik diegene wees wat uit hierdie geïsoleerde geval sal wil munt slaan en hieroor is daar geen beheer nie. Die spreekwoord wat lui “Vir jou vriende hoef jy nie te verduidelik nie en jou vyande gaan jou in elk geval nie glo nie”, sal hier van toepassing wees. Die skool sal voortgaan met sy opvoedingstaak in hierdie verband. As entiteit sal daar sterk opgetree word, soos reeds bewys, sonder om die individu wat sodanige oordeelsfout begaan het, te inkrimineer. Die feit dat die skool hierdie gebeure aan die media gekommunikeer het, bevestig sy onkreukbare beleid. Gelukkig kan enige ouer van ons huidige rugbyspelers hierdie waarheid onderskryf.

According to the recent Old Mutual Savings Monitor findings, more women than men claim that the recent recession has influenced the way they manage their finances. Although 70% of women have at least one store card compared to 58% of males, women are more likely to contribute to stokvels than men. Women are also more likely to save for funeral policies and children’s education, while men tend to save for home deposits and cars. However, more women compared to their male counterparts are planning to support their parents. “As women we should empower ourselves and create our own financial future so that we can take care of our loved ones and ourselves in old age. There is no magic formula, just discipline and proper financial planning – the key elements in ensuring a secure fi-

nancial future,” Thomas adds. It begins with preparing a household budget, settling short term debt like store cards, and working towards reducing longer term debt like bonds on your house. This allows you to adopt better spending patterns and more constructive use of your hard-earned money. Wat baie gehelp het is dat daar ‘n plaasdam naby die brand was, waaruit die helikopter se groot wateremmer gevul kon word. Die feite

Inwoners van die Haenertsburg Garden Cottages aanvaar die besluit van die trustees dat honde nie op die perseel toegelaat word nie. Net vier inwoners het goedgunstiglik toestemming gekry om honde aan te hou, maar hulle het hul perke volgens die ander inwoners oorskry.

Cheerio Gardens outside Haenertsburg is renowned for its blaze of thousands of azaleas reflected in the water next to the tea garden every Spring. Last year owner Ed Hillary decided to capitalize on the beauty of the magnificent gardens. Daughter Sarah (28) says: “My dad saw an opportunity to hold weddings here. Guests often asked us why we didn’t have facilities for more than fifty people.” The Chapel consists of two buildings: a wooden gazebo type area with an unusual roof. In front is a babbling river and a little wooden bridge. The ten meter grassed area between that structure and the main building is decorated for weddings; and

then there’s the hall with a fully equipped kitchen and bar area. Wood from Cheerio farm was used and master carpenter, Enrico Usseglio, fashioned the bar counter. Sarah says; “The buildings together with a large car park were completed a week before our first wedding in December. So far we’ve had eight weddings. We offer the venue, food and drinks as a total package.

Media is nie deurmatte nie

Net die ander dag sukkel ek met ‘n sleutel wat nie in ‘n slot wil pas nie. Frustrasie! Om ‘n deur te kan oopsluit moet jy die regte sleutel hê en as jy die regte sleutel het, moet hy nie stukkend wees nie. Paulus sê in 1 Kor 13 die sleutel om die deure van die lewe mee oop te sluit is die liefde. “Al praat ek die tale van mense en engele, maar ek het nie die liefde nie...” Hierdie sleutel kry ons verniet, maar dis nie goedkoop nie. Die sleutel lyk soos ‘n kruis, want Chistus wat sy lewe gegee het, is die model. Wie wil sien hoe liefde lyk, kyk na Christus en as jy lank genoeg kyk, sien jy die kruis en as jy nog langer kyk, ontdek jy die sleutel in jou hand! Mooi naweek!

Die liefde-haat-verhouding tussen mense in posisies — en sommige wat hulle verbeel hulle beklee posisies — manifesteer klokslag as ‘n noodtoestand bestuur moet word. Soos die afgelope week met die vliegongeluk(ke). Die media, wat gereeld vroom vriendelik nader gewink word as hulle nodig is om ‘n boodskap (gratis) uit te dra, is Maandag en Dinsdag weer by geleentheid as lastige nuushonde geëtiketteer en selfs verjaag, toe hulle hul werk probeer doen het. ‘n Land het gewag op nuus van ‘n grootse tragedie, maar nuusspanne is soos deurmatjies rondgeskuif. Die onkunde (en arrogansie) by “leiers” oor die hantering van die media, bly maar ‘n lastige probleem.

Bloedige skrik Groot geskrik van Tzaneen skryf: Dit was net bloed toe `n vrou haar kop stukkend stamp teen `n inligtingsbord by die biblioteek. Ek was sommer naar van die skrik. Die borde is laag en geroes en staan op `n baie ongemaklike plek. Motors hou agter jou motor stil en dan moet jy noodgedwonge onder die gevaarlike teken deur om by die biblioteek uit te kom. `n Dame by die biblioteek vertel my die vrou moes vyf steke kry. Daar is twee sulke lelike skerp geroeste tekens. Neem dit asseblief weg, anders gaan nog meer mense seerkry. Julle het mos al daaroor gepraat in die Bulletin dat die padtekens te laag is. Daar het jy dit nou. Iemand het baie seergekry. Die munisipaliteit moet asseblief iets doen aan die parkering by die biblioteek. Daar is altyd baie voertuie maar min mense in die biblioteek. Hy is in die hospitium by Macadamia Village opgeneem, vier dae voor sy dood na ‘n kort siekbed van drie weke. Hy laat sy vrou, drie kinders, skoonkinders, vier kleinkinders en sy ma en suster agter. Letaba Rotary club recently had visitors to the Tzaneen area sharing their work as volunteers. Ms Melanie Paul from Germany was sharing her work at a foundation assisting rural business women, together with Mr Sid Prabhakar from America. This concept was awarded with the Noble Peace Prize and it is now branching out in South Africa and the rest of Africa. Mr Ted Shu, a Peace Core volunteer delivered his speech in Afrikaans (which was much enjoyed by all)! Mr Rudi Viljoen gave a report back from his visit to the Rotary International conference in New Orleans. Tzaneen CC wins local league

MHS-meisies klop Capricorn

The final golf league round was held at the Hans Merensky golf course between Tzaneen Country Club, Drakensig, Hans Merensky and Orangedene on Sunday. Tzaneen had a commanding 25 point lead which they just managed to hold on to, winning by 8 points in the end. Thys Du Toit was the stand out player for Tzaneen, being unbeaten in ten league matches. TCC will move onto the next round, playing against the winners of the other league in our region. In front are Nicci Janse van Rensburg, Connie Goedschalk, Thys Du Toit and Hendri Schoonraad. At the back are George Bezuidenhout, Garth Stevens, Geitjie Smit and Walter Herfurth.

Twee hekkies voor bekerglorie Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se vier A-rugbyspanne het die naweek ’n tree nader aan Beeldtrofee-glorie gekom, toe hulle na die halfeindronde van die reeks deurgedring het. Die o.16a’s het Vrydag reeds teen Dinamika in Johannesburg gespeel en ’n rillerstryd met 15-10 gewen. Saterdag het die o.14A’s, o.15A’s en die eerste span by die huis gespeel. Die o.14’s het in ’n ewe taai stryd teen Secunda met 19-14 gewen. Die o.15’s het teen Standerton gespeel en na ’n span gelyk wat nie hierdie seisoen geklop gaan word nie. Hulle het met 59-0 geseëvier. Die eerste span het ook teen Standerton gespeel en het vroeg in die wedstryd na ’n span gelyk wat nie maklik gekeer gaan word nie, toe die flank Madala Ndinisa gaan druk het. Losskakel Marcel Scholtz het die drie verdoel. Standerton het egter ander planne gehad en die eerste helfte het grotendeels aan hulle behoort. Hulle het ’n strafdoel en verdoelde drie aangeteken, voordat die Vossies se skrumskakel Kefentse Mahlo kort voor rustyd onder die pale gaan druk het. Die drie is deur Scholtz verdoel en die rustydtelling was 14-10. Die tweede helfte het vir vyftien minute geen punte opgelewer nie, voordat die vleuel Tovhi Nefale in die hoek gaan druk het. Scholtz het die drie verdoel en met die telling op 21-10 het dit gelyk asof die Vossies die wedstryd in die sakkie het. Standerton het egter dadelik geantwoord met ’n drie om die gaping weer na ses punte te laat krimp. In die laaste drie minute het die Vossies die uitklophou geslaan, toe die vleuel Viljoen Dreyer onder die pale gaan druk het. Scholtz het weer met die doelskop geslaag en die Vossies het met 28-15 gewen. Die o.14’s speel môre in Potchefstroom teen Potch Gimnasium, die o.15’s in Pretoria teen Tuine en die o.16’s ook in Pretorie teen Overkruin, terwyl die eerste span Lichtenburg toe ry. • Intussen het Helpmekaar se vier A-spanne ook hul wedstryde gewen en vorder hulle na môre se halfeindronde. Die eerste span speel teen Potch Volkskool, die o.16’s en o.15’s teen Transvalia en die o.14’s teen Klerksdorp.

Die Vossies se slaankrag het Saterdag merendeels in hul agterlyn gelê. Hier beur die sterk senter, Juan Smit, vorentoe met ’n Standerton-speler op sy rug. REGS: Viljoen Dreyer draai agter die pale om die laaste spyker in Standerton se kis te slaan.

Botes moker ’n beurt vir die boeke

Vyf Tzaneeners kry SA-kleure Die Tzaneen Ringbalklub is trots op vyf van hul lede wat vir nasionale spanne gekies is. Voor is Natashja Walters (SA Uitnodigingspan) en agter is Jackie Steyn (Presidentspan), Lynette Breed (Springbokspan), Joe Cronje (Presidentspan) en me Sarie Vermaak (SA keurder en SA o.23-mansuitnodigingspan se bestuurder).

Hennie Botes, ’n krieketspeler van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se eerste span, het Saterdag die Vossies se krieketgeskiedenis herskryf. Hy het ’n onoorwonne 217 lopies van 139 balle gemoker in hul eerste Limpopo ligawedstryd teen Tom Naudé. Dit het sestien 4’e en sewentien 6’e ingesluit en hy het vir 137 minute (of 43,2 boulbeurte) gekolf. Matome Modiba het 55 lopies en John Viljoen 42 lopies aangeteken. Botes was ook by vier groot kolfvennootskappe van 95, 94, 107 en 95 lopies betrokke. Ben Vorster het uiteindelik 416 lopies vir die verlies van vier paaltjies in hul toegelate 50 boulbeurte aangeteken. Na middagete het Girvacques de Jager met sy draaiballe ses paaltjies vir slegs 33 lopies in vyf boulbeurte laat kantel. Openingsbouler, Johan Eramus, het twee paaltjies vir 21 lopies laat kantel.
