No money! Thus no finishing the road job

There’s no money to complete the current high maintenance work on the Georges Valley road tot Haenertsburg! The contractor, who is clearly doing a sterling job, will thus have to move his plant and people back to Pretoria, at great cost. Once the budget allows for the maintenance to be continued, the contractor will be called back — obviously at great cost. The GV road was “fixed” about two years ago by an obscure contractor, who was “fired” before the job could be finished. Their work did not last for much longer than three months.

Now the road, carrying a very high volume of traffic and especially heavy vehicles, will be improved between Tzaneen and Vergelegen, about 20 km from Tzaneen — and the rest of the road will have to wait. Our source, a senior official in the roads department, confirmed the sad news earlier this week. A member of the contractor’s team also confirmed that they have been notified of the situation. In the mean time motorists are warned to be extremely cautious on this road, since road works cause detours at certain points.

Farm couple attacked in Agatha The Agatha community outside Tzaneen staggered under a farm attack when well-known author/journalist Bridget Hilton-Barber and a friend were injured in a robbery on Wednesday night. Three men armed with knives entered the homestead next to the Kings Walden guesthouse in Agatha around 20:00 through the study and attacked the couple in the lounge. Mr Richard

Chipps (47), a visitor from Gauteng, was stabbed in the leg during a scuffle and Hilton-Barber was hit by a stone and stabbed in the head. The robbers grabbed two cameras, a laptop and a cell phone worth about R43 000 and ran off. Mr Ron Reiners of Agatha SAS arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and assisted them until the police

and members of Northern Security arrived. The couple were taken to Tzaneen Mediclinic, where Chipps was released after treatment. HiltonBarber spent the night in hospital. Police spokesman Capt Simon Shikwambana said a case of robbery is investigated. No arrests have been made and anyone with information can contact Capt Ndlovu on 015 306 2000.

Ms Petronella Katrina Marshman of Tzaneen celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday! On page 2 is more about her and her family.
