The legal cost to ratepayers for the Mopani District Municipality’s ongoing court battles regarding a tender for a water pipeline to connect the Nandoni Dam at Thohoyandou with the Nsami Dam at Giyani, could run into a couple of million rand. The MDM has now turned to the Constitutional Court (CC), after an interdict was granted against the MDM in the High Court. Acting Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke has to consider the appeal to the CC. A lawyer who has a vested interest in the case, says “this will cost the MDM” and added that the serious allegations about the MDM’s handling of the tender could also “bite the MDM”. The Bulletin is investigating the case and will reprt on it in due course.

So kom ons noem dit, semiaanvaarbaar. Kragwoorde daarenteen is v.i.

Dis mos nie m@#r, of m%$r, of m&*r, nie.

Walk for water

When Ms Alison Jennings heard of the plight of a rural Limpopo school, she decided to make a difference. Alison, who’s a Maths and Science teacher in Johannesburg, was attending an Eco Schools conference at the Tzaneen Country Lodge. A secondary school called Mugwazeni, some 40 km outside Tzaneen, was doing well until a total lack of water stopped the dream of being the best Eco School in Limpopo. The well-tended vegetable garden, a shining example of permaculture and the tree nursery began dying. The nursery could no longer provide an income for the school and the burgeoning community where there is an 80% unemployment rate. Alison decided on “Walking for Water” to raise funds to help Mugwazeni. She and her engineer husband Graham walked the famous 320 km Camino Primitivo pilgrimage in Spain. It took them two weeks, and they returned with three sponsorships. Mr Deon du Plessis, who’s been salesman for Marley Pipes in Limpopo for 28 years, ran a course to teach the pupils to drill and put up the guttering by themselves within a week. Alison says the biggest need is to install the age of 42, her son, Mr Thomson a rainwater harvesting Shiburi, at 46 and her youngest son , system to capture and store rain water. Atherstone clivias best again

Reward offered after farm attack in Agatha A reward of R10 000 has been offered to anyone who provides information to the police that leads to the arrest and conviction of the three assailants who attacked Bridget Hilton-Barber and Richard Chipps at Stone Cottage in Agatha on the evening of Wednesday 31 August. The Hilton-Barber family, who regard the incident as one of attempted murder, is funding this together with friends and relatives. The case is being handled by W/O KO Masinge (083 550 6774) of the Tzaneen Police Station (015 306 2120) and all calls should be directed to him. According to information provided by the family, three men dressed in T shirts and jeans, armed with butcher’s knives, burst into the house. Two men attacked Richard Chipps, one trying to stab him in the chest. Richard managed to kick him away but the knife entered his left leg above the knee. The third man attacked Bridget with a knife and a brick. Bridget screamed and grappled with her assailant. He

Roumen Farms Wholesale Nursery in Georges Valley, Tzaneen, was announced show champion at the Northern Clivia Show in Pretoria. It is the fourth time since 2006 that Hilton and Liza Atherstone have scooped this prestigious award. Many growers experienced a later than usual flowering due the consistenly cold winter. Despite the concern by the show organisers that entries would be lower than usual, a record number of entries were received. The Atherstones entered a total of 23 plants and received a total of twenty awards: 8 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze, 2 “best on show” in their categories — 1st in the non-flowering section — a beautiful Mandarin variegated and a 3rd in “best on show” with flower — a stunning yellow with two umbels. Two of their plants in particular, caused quite a stir — a

slashed Bridget across the head with the knife. Bridget managed to wrest the knife away from her assailant and kicked him backwards. She was bleeding profusely. She stood up and confronted the man with his own knife. He and the other men retreated to the door and ran off. Items stolen were one HP laptop, two Cannon cameras and lenses and camera bags, pink Blackberry cell phone and a pair of large white Adidas running shoes (with distinctive yellow heel band). Richard drove himself and Bridget to the Tzaneen Medi-Clinic and Bridget was immediately taken into theatre. The doctor stated later that Bridget had nearly been scalped and was lucky to be alive. The Agatha neighbourhood watch arrived soon after the incident and were soon followed by the police. The police were still at the scene when Richard returned later that evening after his wound had been treated and were joined by further contingents of police.

The interspecific had been an exciting ’find’ in the garden (one of Hilton’s own crosses) and unfortunately drooped its head! There will be a clivia show presented by the newly formed Bosveld Clivia Interest Group tomorrow in Polokwane: Venue : The Farmyard next to Mall of the North; Plant entries 07:00 to 09:00; Open to public 10:00 to 15:30. All clivia lovers are encouraged to participate and share their ‘beauties’ with the public ! All new members are welcome to join the interest group.

Lees saam Y du Toit, Posbus 357 Tzaneen, skryf: Septembermaand is leesmaand. Hierdie gebeure het onbewustelik `n liefde vir lees by my gevestig.

Rev Ron J Reiners • 083 617 8442 In my discussions with others it seems that some are of the opinion that I am waxing too theological and perhaps too much like a teacher. So I have prayed about this and I will in this article just state all the names that God was called and give a brief meaning to them, perhaps you can then ask your religious instructor to explain them in detail. Elohim: – Almighty creator; El Shadai: God the mountain or God the enough; Jehovah Jirah: The Lord will provide or give of Himself; Jehovah Rophe: I am the Lord who heals; Jehovah Nissi: The Lord is my banner; Jehovah Qadesh: The Lord who sanctifies; Jehovah Shalom: The God of peace; Jehovah Rohe: My Shepard; Adonai: Lord; Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord our Righteousness; Jehovah Shammah: The Lord is there; Jesus: Our Saviour. We as Christians use mainly the name Jesus but we must also consider all the names God was called after all who is Jesus but the Son of the Living God. In this awful world we live in we need reassuring all the time that God is with us always. He is there to share our sorrow and our joy. What we need to do is to believe that all things are possible through Him. This is called “FAITH” if we do not have faith then we can be considered as not existing, a mere body that function without direction or cause. I hope that we never forget the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus paid for each and everyone of us. Yes at times we will doubt that He is still there but rest assured He will never leave us. God Bless You All

soek.

Sport is mos deesdae ook ‘n loopbaan, of hoe?

Feit beteken immers: dit staan vas, is onomstootlik so, inderdaad...

Pleonasmes verteenwoordig slordige taalgebruik soos “‘n ou bejaarde” of “‘n vals leuen”.

The Museums of Limpopo and Mpumalanga We were pleasantly surprised by the reaction from readers after our feature on the Tzneen Museum, a few weeks ago. We thus decided to add something for the benefit of the museum dwellers There are splendid museums in Limpopo. In the Kruger National Park, Thulamela Hill is a reconstructed stone-walled hilltop Iron Age settlement. Masorini is an Iron Age Ba-Phalaborwa settlement with reconstructed huts and other structures. This hill was first discovered and described by Jürgen Witt in 1968 to the German Research Council. The Tsonga kraal Open Air Museum near Letsitele is a living museum depicting traditional Tsonga life as it was 150 years ago. Daily demonstrations include music/musical instruments, woodwork/carvings, weaving rush mats, clay work, iron smelting, and salt making. At Marulaneng (Hoedspruit) the Nyani Tribal Village has been reconstructed to resemble an authentic Shangaan village of some fifty years ago. At Mokopane the Arend Dieperink Museum is housed in a historical stone building and depicts the cultural heritage of the Northern Province. Among the themes are the paleontology and archaeology of the area, a typical Bushveld home, and guns, farm implements, wagons and tractors. In Mpumalanga, the museum at Lydenburg houses exhibitions on historic events since the 17th century and incorporates various cultures, societies and life-styles. The Barberton Museum has displays on geology and mining as well as archaeology, ethnology, and military and cultural history. The Botshabelo Mission Station is a historical mission station that includes Fort Merensky, churches and a parsonage. The museum provides a look into the daily routine of a 19th century mission station. Adjacent to it is a traditional village and living museum

It is believed that the FET was offered an undisclosed amount as a grant from abroad to stage the special training programme. Payment of the grant is now in jeopardy and the training programme could be cancelled if the dispute between the students and the college is not resolved soon.

Police trained on veld fires Sixteen police officers were trained to handle charges laid by landowners against the lighting of fires as well as protecting indigenous forests, woodlands and the bushveld against unlawful cutting of trees. The Letaba Fire Protection Associa-

Adv George Ngwato from Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry indicated that 30,6% of the country has an extreme veld fire risk and the Mopani area is in this category. He explained how the Act can be enforced. Imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both

Local talent to stage a fine show

The TzaneenInfo website in conjunction with volunteers from Tzaneen presents the TzaneenInfo Spotlight on 16 and 17 September. This musical experience will showcase some of the best local talent this area has to offer, says Ms Genie Stoltz of TzaneenInfo. “Look forward to some familiar faces and songs, and be prepared to experience completely new artists and music. If you are a lover of the arts, and enjoy a fresh experience, this is a concert you should not miss! Get swept away by classical music, dance, live art, a 25 piece choir, guitar, piano, drums and loads of vocal talent. “Listen to the popular classics and enjoy new tracks that will make you sit up and listen — all on one stage, for two nights only.” The concert will be held in the Tzaneen Primary School’s hall. All funds generated for this event go toward Hospice Tzaneen. Tickets cost only R50 for adults and R25 for schoolgoing children (preschool kids enter free). Snacks and drinks will be on sale. Get involved as a sponsor, and enjoy supporting the community, while receiving marketing exposure at the same time. Send an email to contact@tzaneeninfo.co.za to find out more.

In an effort to eradicate poverty officials of the department of social development in Limpopo visited the Mhlaba head kraal outside Tzaneen, with the purpose of introducing the community to the sustainable livelihood program. The program will replace the food parcels initiative, which allegedly was unsustainable. A selected number of community members who were identified through profiling of 57 032 families conducted in 2009, received donations to help kick start their businesses. Equipment fitting the catego-

ries of catering, sewing, farming, carpentry, hair dressing and welding was handed over by the officials, and people received gas stoves, sewing machines, tankers, electric saws, salon equipment and welding equipment based on the identified skills and needs. The Mayor of the GTM, Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, said the GTM would adopt the department’s strategy of doing away with food parcels. She encouraged women to realise their power and to use it to bring change in their families and communities in general. The community was asked to use the equipment for the benefit of their families and community as well.

Deysel kan by 082 414 7798 of 015 307 5813 of per e-pos by mopanielectrical@msn.com gekontak word.

Stanford Lake College will stage their annual school production on 22 September. It promises to be an eventful evening with drama, music and dance. The play is based on the hit movie “The Breakfast club” and will take many back to their school days. The cast (photo) consists of the usual bunch of school kids sitting Saturday detention: a drama queen, a jock, a nerd, a weirdo and, of course, a know-it-all Bully. Added to this well known cast is a gallery of animals, commenting and criticising the action they are watching. This addition to the original script was entirely written by Stanford pupils and provides an excellent showcase for their creativity and ingenuity. Come join this fun-filled evening on 22 September at 18:30 in the Barnyard Theatre at Stanford Lake College. Tickets are available at the school front office, or cal Dawn Bragin on 015 276 6103/7 to book seats. Tickets are R80 per person, including light snacks!

Keep a dream is ‘n organisasie wat opheffingwerk in plaaslike agtergeblewe gemeenskappe doen.

LINKS: Die Hoërskool Merensky bied jaarliks by hul kultuurweek ‘n kultuurspele-dag aan.

As more and more businesses attempt to move towards virtual workplaces, it is important to utilize the proper tools on the educational frontier as well. To make this transition a seamless one, Merensky High School recently introduced eBeam, an interactive whiteboard solution developed by Luidia, into some of their

classes. Here, a few students are at work on a project away from the class room, while delivering information to their fellow classmates on the interactive white board. This board enables scholars in- and outside the classroom to collaborate internally and with others using the latest interactive technology.

News from Giyani by Orlando Chauke

Women say “we’ve had enough of it” Armed with wheelbarrows, the women of Xihosani village near Giyani took it upon themselves and embarked on a road-fixing campaign as part of celebrating women’s month. This was done in anticipation of the approaching rain season, which often leaves the village isolated due to wet and slippery roads that keep public transport from entering the village. According to one of the residents, Ms Anna Baloyi, the residents have complained about the problem. She said passengers are dropped off half-way and they then have to walk home. “Sometimes you have parcels and then you have to call someone to help you carry your bags, ” explained Baloyi.

Xihosani women trying to fix roads in their village

Tired of complaining every time it rains, the women decided it would be better and faster if they did it themselves, in stead of waiting for government to come to their rescue. This prompted the idea of a road-fixing campaign filling up the potholes with whatever they could find, including soil, half-broken bricks and stones. Baloyi is one of the women who initiated the campaign to help improve the access into the village. “Unlike men, we women are the ones that suffer the most when there’s no access to the village, because we’re the ones that are expected to buy household food,” she said. “A man would give you money and you’d have to bring food to the table — no excuses,” she added. The road works were done by mostly unemployed women, with the help of a few men whose job it was to collect stones and half-broken bricks.

Villagers walk long distances to fetch drinking water It is early in the morning at the RDPs’ settlement in Mtititi village outside Giyani: women wake up and pack their buckets in the wheelbarrows to prepare for a plus or minus 5 km journey to the nearest village to fetch water. The journey takes them either through the bushes or along the main road to the nearest red-cross point used as animal buffer zone for villages around Mtititi. “It depends on where one resides… those that reside nearer the red-cross, which is also some kilometers away, fetch their water there,” explained Ms Anna Manganyi, one of the residents. According to the residents, this has been going on “for more than five months now,” since their local borehole broke down. “Nobody is helping us — we’re forgotten people. The only time they know that we exist is when there are elections,” said Manganyi. “It’s too risky for women to cross the bushes alone to fetch water at Plantjie, but we have no choice, because we have families to care for,” she added. Other residents, however, said they don’t want the fixing of the

borehole only, but a new system that would be able to supply enough water in the village. “We’re actually tired of the borehole system — everyday is problematic,” said another resident, Mr John Chauke. “If not broken, the diesel has ran out. We don’t know why they don’t give us water from the pipeline that supply other villages and runs right past the village,” he said. When asked, the ward councillor in the village, Mr Joe Chabani, said “a technical problem in dealing with the broken pump complicates thing and “it proves very difficult for the technical team to repair it.” Meanwhile Thulamela municipality spokesperson Nndwamato Tshiila said ”we have requested the service of the district municipality to help fix the problem, and in the meantime we are sending water in tankers.

Agri MEC inspects redline areas The MEC for agriculture in Limpopo, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi Duba, is taking no chances to prepare for a possible outbreak of animal disease in the province as the summer season sets in. She visited several animal restriction centres, also known as redlines, in Mopani, to address staff and equip the guards with uniforms and communication devices to improve their communication while at work. The redlines area stretch from Phalaborwa to Musina and Botswana borders in the north and east of Limpopo. “This is where SA’s largest livestock is reared, and where a lot of infiltration by wild and foreign animals comes from,” explained Duba. She added that “the breakout of diseases such as foot and mouth, usually occur during summer rains”. She announced that houses are now being built in all the redline camps in Mopani and Vhembe, to ensure that rangers are ready and motivated to counter any disease outbreak. “The secret of any army is a basecamp… no army can be effective without a strong camp. The rangers are fighting a big war patrolling the borders,” it was said. The equipment and new houses would help a lot towards motivating the rangers to perform well.

He was speaking at the handover of a house to the Maluleke family at Matikoxikaya near Phalaborwa. The Deputy Minister for water and environmental affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, called on hawkers and taxi drivers to be in the forefront in the campaign against littering. Speaking during a launch of the greening and cleaning project in Giyani, Mabudafhasi said “everybody should be an ambassador of a clean environment”. “If you’re a taxi driver or a hawker you shouldn’t be afraid to tell those that buy from you that if they are finished drinking or eating whatever they bought, a dustbin is there,” she said. “In that way you’d be becoming an ambassador of the environment in which you live.” According to her taxi passengers were among the worst polluters of the environment. “These people don’t litter in town — they wait until the taxi gets to rural areas and then start throwing things through the windows, and this is why the taxi drivers should play a role in keeping our environment clean,” she said. The greening and cleaning project in Giyani alone cost R65,5 million, R39 million of which is part of Buyesela eco-towns being implemented by Indaloyethu, a public works extended programme that deals with cleaning of municipal areas. The rest of the money will go into developing of recreational areas in Giyani townships. This include the establishment of two recreational parks and a Buy-back centre, where used waste would be processed into other usable products. According to the minister, this project is currently being implemented in ten municipalities nationally, including Giyani and Thohoyandou in Limpopo. She added that under the social responsibility programme aimed to provide jobs for the poor, her department is currently implementing projects to the tune of R190,6 million in Limpopo. “This translates to 1 032 jobs,” she said. Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani supported the minister’s call, saying no matter how much the government can try to promote cleanness, “it’s still up to people themselves to monitor where they live.”

care for themselves. Since then the kids have been living with a relative in a shack. But life was not easy for them, since their caretaker was unemployed and none of the kids received any form of help from government. This worried the premier most, who blamed it to the ignorance of the ward committee members and the councillor in the village. “This family should have

been discovered a long time ago if the ward councillor and the ward committee members were effective.” He urged the councillors to make sure that the family never goes hungry again. “Should there be, for whatever reason, a single day that those kids go to bed without food, you will lose your jobs.” Ms Anna Tivani, the caretaker, expressed her gratitude to the premier.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Cigarette smoke and alcohol can damage the health of unborn babies. Smoking by pregnant women is associated with low birth weight and premature birth, as well as higher rates of illness (cold, bronchitis, ear infections, etc), breathing problems, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in their babies. Birth defects of the heart, brain, and face are also more common among babies born to smokers. Children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy tend to be physically smaller than children of non-smokers, and may

continue to have higher rates of respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, for many years. The effects of drinking alcohol during pregnancy are also alarming. In fact, the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is the leading cause of birth defects. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a collection of defects that may include any combination of reduced growth (before or after birth), facial deformities, a small head (likely related to reduction of brain size), and abnormal behavioral development. So come on, if you are pregnant, you must stop smoking and drinking for your baby’s sake.

Albei was onoorwonne.

Comrades ups its prize money

The reward at any race is definitely a motivating factor, more so for the top-notch competitors in the world’s greatest ultra-marathon, the Comrades Marathon. With this in mind, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has increased its monetary rewards for the 2012 leg by nearly twenty percent across the board. This translates into an astounding R2 653 700 in total cash prizes, the highest amount paid out in any SA road running fixture. The 2012 male and female winners will each run off with a first prize of R300 000 as opposed to the current award of R250 000, followed by a second position prize of R145 000 and R110 000 for third position versus the going amount of R120 000 and R90 000. In addition any man or woman breaking the current Comrades down run records held by Leonid Shvetsov and Frith van der Merwe respectively, will be paid R300 000 each, as well as other rewards should they qualify, like hotspot prizes and age categories. Encouragement for SA and KZN runners comes in the form of prizes for first SA male and female and first KZN male and female. Team prizes also go out to the winning teams who not only receive a lucrative cash prize, but also the hotly contested Gunga-Din Trophy. Entries for the 2012 edition of the iconic event is open and close on 1 December.
