Yet another lovely homestead gutted by flames

Oorlog @ plakkers in Tzn
— Louis Roux

The Pirie farmhouse outside Haenertsburg burnt down in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A case of arson has been opened and forensic experts from Pretoria ares at the scene to determine the cause of the fire. Police at the scene reported that an electrical fault was suspected. Owner David Pirie and his wife Josie were in Pretoria at the time of the fire and only the two
youngest children, Gavin and Michael, were in the house. It is understood that when the alarm went off the fire was already everywhere and the boys had to jump off the balcony. One of the family dogs, a Dachshund named Tyson, died in the fire and two cars exploded. Our Haenertsburg reporter says the family has lost everything, is in shock and not able to speak to the media at the time of Bulletin going to print.

Hul heelagter is selfs groter as Bakkies. Give those men a Guinness!

Malaria not yet a problem With summer approaching there is growing concern about malaria. The Tzaneen Malaria Institute‘s Mr Phillip Kruger said this week that they would provide information on the status of Malaria in the area in about a month. He said that they needed to correspond with the provincial department of health with regard to their findings and that it is still early days. Once the rainy season has started, they will be in a better position to comment on the situation. — Beaunice Mnisi

The purpose of the stakeholder consultative session is to afford communities an opportunity to be part of the fight against crime by knowing the state of crime in their areas. Stakeholders also got the opportunity to express their views about the police and their work. Seen here are Col Monyela,

This trend continues even in as far as Limpopo-specific statistics and as borne by the provincial statistics, Limpopo is the least crime-ravaged of the country`s nine provinces.” So said the MEC for Safety, Security & Liaison, Mr George Phadagi at a presentation of the

He continued to say that “in the province there has been a remarkable decline of crimes committed in the following categories: “Contact crimes: (murder: down by 16,4%; attempted murder: down by 4,3%; sexual crimes: down by 3,1%) • Contact related crimes • Property related crimes • Crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection • Other serious crimes, e.g. shoplifting. “Marginal increases have been recorded in the following categories: Stock theft • Driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs • Commercial crimes • Truck hijackings • Robbery at nonresidential premises • Neglect and ill-treatment of children. “Our low crime figures are as a result of the following interventions: Better policing which manifests itself in more arrests, more detection, more convictions; Better training of the police; Efficiencies in the criminal justice system; Involvement of society in the fight against crime; Moral regeneration of the South African society. “The statistics say that crime can be defeated and that the police are doing their work. If we work together we can kick crime out of our communities. “We thank the police, communities and all stakeholders for maintaining Limpopo’s pole position as the province of peace,” Phagadi said.

Taps as empty as promises
Almost seven years after completion of the Nandoni Dam, residents of Limpopo are yet to benefit from this R2,1 billion project, with their taps remaining as empty as government’s promises. During a visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to Vhembe last week, yet another promise was made to deliver water, with Mr Alson Matukane, the Director of Water Affairs in Limpopo, announcing that an amount of R700 million has been put aside to address the challenges at Nandoni. The biggest challenge facing government at this stage is the completion of the pipeline network meant for getting the water to the people. This process, however, is marred by prolonged legal battles between governments and the appointed contractor (as reported in Bulletin a number of times). Matukane said it had come to their attention that the pipes that were used in the project were of poor quality and that the department was in the process of prosecuting the previous contractor for poor workmanship in order to recoup the funds. He said, however, that the litigation was taking too long and this was the reason why additional funds were made available to erect parallel pipes, so as to speed up the provision of water in the area. “We have approached the treasury, and funds have
been made available. We are now in the process of appointing a new contractor and we are hopeful that by March 2012 residents of this area will be using water from Nandoni,” said Matukane. Not only the Vhembe District Municipality is embroiled in legal battles with regard to the completion of the much-needed pipeline, but also the Mopani District Municipality (MDM). A costly legal battle between the MDM and two companies, who initially tendered for the building of the pipeline between Nandoni and the Nsami Dam (Giyani), is currently raging in the Constitutional Court. The MDM awarded the R200 million tender to Tlong Re Yeng Trading & Projects in November last year. The court has since granted Cycad Pipelines and Esorfranki Pipelines an interdict against the MDM from continuing with the construction of the pipeline. This after the two companies questioned the processes followed by the MDM in awarding the tender to Tlong Re Yeng. Cycad and Esofranki’s bids were respectively R40 milion and R10 million less than that of Tlong Re Yeng. A lawyer, who has a vested interest in the case, said “this will cost the MDM” and added that the serious allegations about the MDM’s handling of the tender could also “bite the MDM”. — LiN News / Zoutpansberger
Premier confronted about water, jobs and corruption If you don’t have a man to accompany you to the tap to fetch water you can’t go there alone as a woman, Ms Sara Mathonsi of Matiko-xikaya village in Phalaborwa recently told Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale. He was on a door-to-door visit in the area to find out how the community rated government services, and also to hear their complaints. Mathonsi and others told Mathale that they have only one water tap in the area, which services the whole community in the village and that on top of it, the tap is very far from them. “Some women RIGHT: Premier Cassel Mathale listens to the complaints of residents during his visit.
wake their men at 03:00 to accompany them to the tap to avoid queues. If you don’t have a man to accompany you to the tap at three in the morning, you’re doomed, because you can’t go there alone at night,” added Ms Eva Mathebula. Another issue that the premier was confronted with was unemployment. He was told that municipalities advertise jobs that they already have people
ear-marked for and that the youth is tired of corruption. “It seems to me that corruption is legal because people do as they wish and nothing happens,” said Mr Lesley Mongwe, who was speaking on behalf of the youth . The premier ordered that at least two water pipes are installed in the area within a month. He promised to stamp out corruption, and warned that anyone found to be corrupt would be dealt with. — Orlando Chauke, Giyani

Vrydag 23 September
Limpopo is safest province Crime, the fight against it and its prevention, is one of the five government priority areas. The latest statistics paint a positive picture of the government’s fight against crime. Over many years Limpopo has been regarded as a province of peace, an oasis where troubled souls can find peace. In Limpopo people have found a way to exist and work together in peace and harmony. Many people fear that we will one day lose our place of honour as the most safe and peaceful of the nine provinces. To date these fears have not been realized, even after the release of the 2010/2011 National Crime Statistics — Limpopo remains the haven of peace where lives and property are safe and secure. In our province there has been a remarkable decline of crimes committed in a number of categories. We are trailing behind the other eight provinces in all but one crime category. This state of affairs didn’t come about because of the kindness of criminals. Our crime figures are low because of conscious and concerted interventions on the part of stakeholders in the fight against crime. The decline in criminal occurrences is not gifted to us like the biblical manna from heaven. Limpopo is blessed to be the least crime ravaged of the nine provinces. However, nobody should sit back and bask in the glory of these figures as if crime has been uprooted from our communities. Let us stand and work together to assit the police in making Limpopo too hot and too small for criminals. And let us salute our local police for a job well done!
Emmie en Theo Welthagen (The wind beneath her wings).
Nou ja, hier is dit: • Egiptiese groot piramides by Giza; • Hangende tuine van Babilon; • Pharos-vuurtoring in Alexandrië; • Kolossus van Rhodos; • Tempel van Artemis (Diana) by Efese, Turkye; • Mausoleum by Halikarnassus; • Zeus-standbeeld by Olimpus.
Wolk).

Interkerklik is daar bydraes gelewer, en sover as Legkraal Boerdery in Dendron was daar só baie geskenk. Rev Ron J Reiners 083 617 8442 Agape: All consuming love, this word when referred to in a biblical sense is what God is all about and I think it is one of the best ways of describing God. It is just one of His characteristics, but I feel that this is what God is all about. He loved us even before we were born, how amazing is that? Wow! This is the God and Saviour I came to know so many years ago. Not as many try to describe Him as a God who is divorced from us, someone who lives “up there” wherever “up there” might be, a God who breathes fire and brimstone all the time. A God, who if we do not behave, will bring all types of plagues upon us. Yes it can happen if we do not turn to Him for forgiveness, if we do not follow His ways. But even then He still loves us. This characteristic of God encompasses all. It is an amazing

Hy sou slegs deelneem as die wenstreep in Pretoria was. Ons roep almal gesamentlik uit “The Glory is Yours for ever and ever!
Excellent service Nile and Rona McGaffin, Georges Valley,
love. Jesus rightly said: “I give you a new commandment; that you love one another just as I have loved you”. Wow! again, but we just do not do this we love conditionally. How can we love someone who has done us harm? Think about it and imagine if God was like this. We do harm to Him all the time, we forget to give Him thanks for the little things, and only call upon Him in times of trouble. Look at a rainbow and see the many colours each of them bring us a message of joy and love. This is how God sees us no matter who are what we are, rich, poor , old young, black, white or mixed colours. He also loves people of different religions even those who do not accept Him. Are we willing to extend this same love to our fellow humans or will we still love conditionally? God Bless You All

Cooperate, but be cautious With the Census 2011 process beginning, people are advised to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the Census is completed where workers verified the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 workers will count every person in South Africa (start date 10 October) and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big question is: how do you tell the difference between a Census worker and a con artist? 1. If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice.
Highway robbery syndicate smashed: Zimbabwean police at Beit Bridge smashed a wellorganised highway robbery syndicate when they arrested three suspects along the Beit BridgeMasvingo road and recovered stolen goods worth thousands of US dollars. The suspects targeted mainly foreign motorists passing through the border. The three were arrested while they were in the act of stealing goods from a SA truck. Police recovered six stolen cell phones, an undisclosed amount of cash and knives. — LiN News/Limpopo Mirror Daar’s ’n skelm in jou swartsak: Voornemende rowers skuil dees dae in swart vul lis sak ke terwyl hulle wag om toe te slaan. 2. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. 3. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home. 4. Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. 5. Do not give your identity number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the Census. • Remember, no matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address. 6. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, you don’t have to answer anything at all about your financial situation. The Census Bureau will not ask for bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is not with the Census Bureau.
ANC corps came to a head when councillors brought a surprise motion to end municipal manager William Kekana’s contract, and replace him with the head of corporate support services M H Thobejane. Thobejane was reinstated earlier this year after he had been suspended in November last year. His suspension followed guilty verdicts by a disciplinary committee on 26 charges ranging from fraud and theft to dishonesty and misbehaviour. Criminal charges have also been brought against him and he was recently arrested and appeared in court. The councillors ignored four refusals by the Labour Court to have Thobejane’s suspension overturned. Now they are rooting for him to be the municipal manager. The DA asked that the dossiers containing all evidence and allegations against both Kekana and Thobejane be handed to the Hawks and the Public Protector for investigation. The Exco was also asked to report the situation to the MEC for local government and housing, Mr Soviet Lekganyane. — LiN News/Noordelike Nuus
No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau. Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by e-mail, so be on the lookout for e-mail scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the Census Bureau.

Churches asked to practice culture
Reports & photos by Orlando Chauke
Healers, know your limits The chairman of traditional healers in Mopani, Mr Frank Chauke, popularly known as FrankXikhavele, warned other traditional healers against waiting too long with patients that they know they can’t treat. He spoke during a three-day annual conference by traditional healers held at N’wamatatani village, Giyani. The conference, attended by people from as far as Cape Town, is aimed at encouraging members to share ideas and expertise on how to heal certain diseases, as well as addressing challenges that they might have encountered during the course of the year. “Our aim is not only to get money but to heal people as well,” he said. “If you can’t treat certain disease, just pass the patient over to those that can.”
Xikhavele said there are certain diseases that can’t be cured by traditional healers, and that these diseases should be passed over to modern doctors “as soon as detected to save the life of a patient.” Asked on the issue of some traditional healers that are said to bewitch people or give clients concoction meant to harm other people, Xikhavele said “those are not true healers, but individuals driven by greed to make money.” “Naturally for a true healer the Gods would be angry with you, and probably take away your power to heal if you commit things like that,” he said. “Normally the process of qualifying a healer takes long, sometimes years before completed – but nowadays people train for few weeks and come back claiming to be healers,” he said.
An example of solar heating system on a roof
Women in Va-Tsonga cultural dress are seen here selling cultural wares during the launch of the Ndhavuko na Vutshila cultural village in Giyani.
Go for solar; it’s easy A do-it-yourself (DIY) solar energy system is a key to uplifting millions of poor South Africans battling to cope with the high price for electricity. According to Mr Johan Weideman of Modimolle who has discovered the benefit of using the self-made solar system to supplement his electrical energy, “it’s easy and cost effective” to construct since it can be constructed from old materials. Weideman has been using a self-made solar heating system for more than a year now. “All you need is a fitting called U-connector. The system can be built with new or old waterpipes and the U-connector.” The pipe is cut into several
equal lengths, after which the U-connector is fitted at the end of each pipe to connect them to form parallel lengths. “After that, you install a drum of water at the end of the system, a tap on the other end, and then put it on the roof to get the sun’s exposure — and if more water is needed, just add pipes.” According to Weideman the heating system can also be connected to a geyser, to pre-heat the water up to 30°C. He said the system would help to reduce the energy bill, as well as to create jobs for people who would specialise in installing it. “This will also curb air pollution, since people would no longer have to make fires to heat water,” he said.
The ANC’s general secretary in Limpopo, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, says cultural practices and dressing should not only be seen during cultural events. “It should be a trend seen on a daily basis, including churches services.” Maswanganyi was speaking during the launch of Ndhavuko na Vutshila cultural village in Giyani. According to him “churches and departments should have a day dedicated to cultural dressing, so that youth will grow up knowing their culture and where they come from.” “In some churches cultural dressing is associated with unholiness — we must make sure that leaders and pastors take a lead in cultural practices to change the mind-set that people have about our culture,” he said. In support of Maswanganyi’s statement, Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani said people nowadays no longer love culture as they used to in the past. He said the challenge is that “most people want free things, and only support culture when it is dished out to them for free”. He also urged business people to support culture wherever possible. Ndhavuko na Vutshila cultural village was initiated by Howard Khosa and other stake holders to establish “an area that reflects the true identity of va-Tsonga people.” It is said to officially open soon. According to Khosa, the project is a none profit organisation.

‘Development going ahead whether they want it or not’ — Hosi Hosi Siyandhani Famanda Chavalala, of Siyandhani village, Giyani, vowed to go ahead and bring development in his village and Giyani as a whole, despite his disagreement with the Ngove royal family over chieftaincy. This comes after a project worth R10,9 million and other developments were apparently stopped by Ngove royal family, arguing that Chavalala is not a chief in the village but a headman, therefore has no right to bring development without consulting them. When interviewed, Ngove’s royal family spokesperson Michael Mabunda said the royal family was not blocking any development, but they want “an application letter from whoever wants to start a development in the village,” since it falls under Ngove’s tribal office. The statement was later disputed by Chavalala who claimed that he was the rightful chief in the village and not just a mere headman as the royal family alleged. Speaking during the cultural event held recently in Giyani, attended by ANC general secretary in the province Joe Maswanganyi, Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani and many other stake holders, Chavalala revealed that the blocked projects were now up again. In a veil snub of Ngove royal family, Chavalala said “want it or not ,Giyani will develop — even if you go to the newspapers to point fingers we will not stop. “By the thirtieth of this month the construction of town houses, a

mall, taxi rank and modern transport starts,” he said, assuring the Giyani mayor of cooperation. “I had a talk with some business people recently — what they’re bringing here will turn Giyani into something else,” he said. Chavalala also lashed out at the small faction in his village that are positioning themselves as suitors to share the R10,9 million that the village received as part of a land restitution claim, saying the money is meant for development. “You must just forget this sharing idea because that will never happen — that money is meant for development which will benefit all of us, not just few individuals,” he said. This latest development is seen as a relief for Giyani which has suffered from years of underdevelopment due to land within it belonging to traditional leaders that are unwilling to release it. This resulted in a long list of people waiting for residential sites. Meanwhile municipal spokesperson Room Mdaka has said that the Greater Giyani Municipality has managed to secure a piece of land with one of the chiefs that surrounds the town. He said “we’re currently processing the paperwork and we hope we will achieve the same with the others.”
Are you going to remain quiet if the government push ahead with an act to silence the media?

Letaba’s CEO did not know...
Reports about the Letaba Hospital management’s alleged failure to respond to attacks on doctors by psychiatric patients, as published in a daily newspaper on Thursday, are unsupported. Dr Joe Muhlari, the CEO of the hospital, said on Wednesday that no report of such an incident was communicated to management. “We learned of this alleged attack when we saw the report in the newspaper”. Muhlari said there were procedures in place for the staff to relay complaints to management and these procedures were not followed. — Beaunice Mnisi

Ben Voster klop PHS in o.17-reeks eindstryd Jean Aucamp

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)
If you are struggling to stay motivated with your fitness program, it’s time to get yourself a personal trainer. Not only will he keep you motivated, but he will also help you achieve your goals much faster. How often do you skip gym because you just feel lazy? But if you know that your personal trainer is waiting for you, you will go.
If you can’t afford a personal trainer, try to team up with a training buddy. Just make sure he is motivated enough. A training buddy is like a business, both of you need to motivate each other and as soon as you get lazy, the other one needs to be very hard on you. Just remember that this is the only body you have, use it wisely.
