The Mopani District Municipality has placed recruitment advertising in newspapers (not the Bulletin, since they don’t seem to like fearlessly the truth) for 76 jobs at an estimated annual cost of well over R16 million. One of the job offers is for a bodyguard for the mayor, Mr Joshua Matlou! A total of six secretaries are needed — for the mayor, the speaker , the chief whip, corporate services, water services and the treasury — and they could earn R178 042,72 per annum plus a housing subsidy, enjoy medical aid, pension fund benefits and UIF contributions. At R14 836,89 per month plus all the subsidies and benefits the public service, sponsored by rate payers, has clearly left the private sector behind and yellow with envy. Of the 76, four are contract posts offering “a competitive remuneration package to be negotiated”. Top earners will be five assistant directors (of monitoring and reporting, housing, rural development and EPWP, infrastructure planning, maintenance and water quality), each at R314 601,61 per annum plus housing subsidy and transport allowance, medical and pension benefits etcetera. This represents a salary of R26 217 per month, plus all the benefits. Vlieg praat met die Volk, en krap waar dit jeuk Vlieg is nie seker presies hoekom nie, maar hy was darem bly om weer by die huis te kom, hoewel die gevoel net geduur het totdat hy by die ORT se internasionale aankomsaal uitgestap het. Vlieg moet sê, as enige buitelander die Republiek sal besoek net vir ‘n internasionale aansluitingsvlug, sal hy darem beïndruk wees met ons land. Hoewel daar min anders te sien is van die sukses van FIFA 2010, is die lughawe darem mooi. Soos wat hy vroeër berig het, is die Vic Valle die naaste wat Vlieg vantevore aan die buiteland was. Die besoek aan die Nuwe Seeland was dus enersyds ‘n unieke ervaring, en annersyds ‘n skokkende een. Skokkend, omdat Vlieg nie gedink het die sogenaamde eerstewêreld is regtig so skoon, effektief en stiptelik nie. Vlieg het amper lus gekry vir agterbly. Dit nogal nadat hy sy enkel seergemaak het in Wellington. Sommer tuisgevoel daar. Die ambulansman is van die Paarl, die suster in die hospitaal se ongevalle van Klerksdorp, die dokter van Springs en die ortopeed van Bloemfontein. Net die tannie wat tee bedien het was van ‘n ander land. Sy is van Durban. Vlieg se voorneme was om as hy weer terug is, om minder krities en meer toegeeflik te wees. Maar nadat hy eers opgevang het met al die gebeure tydens sy afwesigheid, gaan van sy voorneme natuurlik dadels kom. Met die dorp se inry — en die rit van Polokwane hiernatoe was amper langer as die vlug van Auckland af — sien Vlieg daar het

Interactors from Interact Letaba (affiliated to Rotary Letaba), all from Merensky High School, recently offered help at the Bright Morning Star Creche in Nkowankowa. The creche held a well attended, lively beauty pageant. The Interactors played with the children, read to them, organised them, spoiled the little girls with glittery makeup and generally motivated the children with their friendly, joyful interaction. Zainab Kalla and Sameehah Yacoob (both pupils at Merensky High School) are seen here with two of the little girls.

Polisie is nou warm op spilpuntdiewe se spoor

Die toilette spoel weer Verligting by vliegveld ‘n Toilet- en waterkrisis by die Letaba Vliegveld wat besoekende vlieëniers en passasiers erge ongerief besorg het, is met die vrywillige hulp van vliegklublede opgelos. Die munisipale vliegveld het nuwe boorgate en tenks is opgerig om die watervloei te herstel, nadat dit vir ‘n geruime tyd gelol het. Die toilette is herstel en opgeknap en sal voortaan gesluit wees, met die sleutels wat by die pompjoggie aan diens beskikbaar sal wees. Volgens mnr Tienie Prinsloo van die Vliegklub se bestuur was dit ‘n onaanvaarbare toedrag van sake wat die GTM moes regstel. Vliegklublede het besluit om self in te spring en ‘n deel van die werk eiehandig te doen.

Die polisie is warm op die spoor van ‘n span diewe wat die afgelope weke op plase in die Ofcolaco-omgewing toegeslaan en spilpuntbande ter waarde van duisende rande gesteel het. Van die boere wat deurgeloop het, mnr Chris Gerber en sy seun Pieter, sê genoeg bewyse is reeds ingesamel om die diewe aan die pen te laat ry. By hulle is minstens R77 000 se skade. Die diewe kon nie die bande van die spilpunte afkry nie en het dit toe met aandrywingsmeganismes en al gestroop. Hy het intussen vier van die agt bande in Lydenburg opgespoor, waar foto’s van die vermeende diewe en die voertuig waarmee Mariette Grobler en Jannes Dry was die toon- die gesteelde goedere vervoer is, geneem is. Gerber jr sê knap optrede deur die polisie beeld van stylvolheid by die matriekafskeid van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster. het gehelp dat die ondersoek binnekort re-

Kort daarna is hy weer in hegtenis geneem, weens die besit van ‘n gesteelde Lister-enjin en weer op borgtog vrygelaat. Gerber sê die net span al nouer en ‘n deurbraak word enige dag verwag.

Furthermore, expenditure of this magnitude must follow protocol and certain procedures must be followed. All indications are that this has not been done,” he added. Willemse also said that the DA would be taking this incident to the highest level and

that Mr Jacques Smalle, (the DA’s shadow minister of Trade and Industry,) has already put written questions to the Minister of Coopererative Governance and Traditional Affairs, requesting an explanation. “This is another example of the chaos and mismanagement in the GLM. It must be brought to a halt and culprits taken to task. I am closely monitoring and investigating several incidents of wasteful expenditure and we will ensure that such nonsensical decisions are dealt with severely,” Willemse warned. We could not speak to the spokesperson of the GLM, Ms Lovers Sibanda, about this issue before our deadline.

Vossies groet die “chief”

Die leerlinge en personeel van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het op Vrydag afskeid geneem van mnr Piet Swart. Hy tree aan die einde van die jaar af, maar ter wille van die beplanning vir volgende jaar het hy op 14 Oktober die leisels amptelik oorhandig aan mnr Chris Denysschen. Denysschen, die adjunkhoof, sal waarneem as hoof, totdat die pos geadverteer kan word. Die Vossies se afskeidseremonie van mnr Swart en die matrikulante van 2011 was ‘n emosionele byeenkoms waardeur niemand onaangeraak gelaat is nie. Swart is hierdie kwartaal nog in ’n raadgewende hoedanigheid by die skool, maar Denysschen is amptelik aan die stuur van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster. Die Vossies bedank ook die SAVF Kleuterskool en die Laerskool Tzaneen vir hul bydraes tot die byeenkoms. Die Vossies sê hulle is trots om die twee skole se ouboet te wees.

It was a night of Egyptian splendor at Fairview Hotel as the Gr 12-pupils of Merensky High School arrived in a cavalcade of exotic cars, a tow truck and even a four-wheeler for their matric farewell party. The stars bowed down in dazzling awe, as glittering sequenced girls were escorted by suddenly grown up boys to be wined and dined in the land of milk and honey, Egypt. In the belly of a pyramid the Gr 11 waiters served East African cuisine before dancers entertained the guests.

LEFT: The annual mother and daughter luncheon hosted by Merensky High School was an inspirational musical exposé. Hand-in-hand mothers and daughters were invited to journey with each other down the road of motherhood through the eyes of a toddler, child, teenager, student and mother. The “Story without end” presentation was the brainchild of Ms Luzanne Duvenhage, written and narrated by Ms Liezl Wagenaar and music delivered by Ms Mareli van Onselen. The definite highlight was the Gr 12’s who showcased their glamourous matric farewell gowns.

Gravy train stops in Mopani The gravy train has finally arrived in the Mopani district, and it seems that it will be parked here for quite a while. The ever so important mayors, chauffeured in their luxury vehicles with flashing blue lights (which is absolutely against the law), are now being elevated to bodyguard status. Gone are the good old days when mayors were public servants and not political commissars driving socialistic political agendas. Gone are the days when mayors were humble civil servants who could move around freely, and not political snobs who have to be protected against their people. More and more bodyguards will be needed to protect the self-glorificated worships who see themselves as untouchable agents of the Party. For as long as they have their priorities wrong, they will feel threatened to the extent that they will have to hide behind bodyguards. These amateur politicians often try to hide their inferiority behind costly golden chains and fancy robes — at the expense of their (poor) constituency. In stead of showing respect for rate payers’ hard earned money, they wobble from the one expensive (and unnessecary) excursion to the next undisciplined spending spree. They couldn’ worry less about dilapidated infastructure and would rather show concern for image. Printed T-shirts for every occasion, caps and branded files and folders... fancy goods that could never contribute towards improving the lives of the masses are what they like to show for other peoples’ hard earned money. And, naturally, the never to be missed meals and drinks, sponsored by the poor tax payers. Our beloved country is heading towards an implosion of untold damage to the economy. It is not possible to maintain the insatiable appetite for status of the executives. Equally, their extravagance in promoting political agendas in stead of securing improvement to peoples’ daily battles to just survive, will come back to bite them. Sadly, it will also bite the poor. They might impress the poorest of the poor who are illiterate. The rest of the population is waking up to the self-enrichment of the so-called leaders and their buddies. The light in the tunnel is in fact a train coming towards us — at high speed and with brakes that are over-heated and thus totally useless !

Poor service

Butch Baker, Letaba Fire Base Manager/ Airbase Manager, Letaba Fire Protection Association writes: On 12 October I went to the Greater Letaba Municipality with very good intentions. I asked the security person to see the Disaster Manager. After finishing the game on his cell phone he stood up and without a word walked toward the Disaster Manager’s office. I followed without being asked to. He knocked on the security gate with a coin and spoke loudly to the Disaster Manager who was in his office. The Disaster Manager came out of his office and leaned against the doorframe. He spoke to the Security Guard in North Sotho, still holding up the doorframe. The Security Guard left and the Disaster Manager just stood there, after approximately five minutes his phone rang and he went inside to answer it, never to appear again. A few minutes after this I asked him, from the passage, what was happening.

the people get out? I would appreciate it if this letter was answered in this newspaper either by the Mayor or the Municipal Manager, within a time frame of two weeks.

Yvonne Borman skryf: Ek wil graag die geleentheid benut om vir die Bulletin baie dankie te sê vir al die kere wat julle die berig oor ons 50ste reünie geplaas het. Dit was wonderlik as jy ‘n oproep kry van een van jou ou vriende wat dit raakgelees het in die koerant. Ek waardeer dit baie, dit was goed om hulle weer te sien, maar die ouderdom het sy merk gelaat. Dit was ook hartseer om te sien wat het siekte aan party van hulle gedoen. Ander was weer stil en het net geluister wat die ander te sê gehad het.

• Continued from previous delivery. We do not often preach about God’s wrath or angry, portraying God as a God of love instead, the “Good News” theory. Yet one of God’s characteristics is wrath. Throughout the Bible we read about what happened to people when they disobeyed God and failed to seek His forgiveness. Thus we become frightened to preach about this side of God. We portray God as a God of love who never becomes angry. As a parent we humans try to avoid things that will be harmful to our children. God too sees to it that nothing harmful will come in our way as His children. Yes He gets disillusioned with us when we disobey Him. However, His anger is not like ours, it is not vengeful. It is an anger filled with love for us. God will not stand for unrighteousness. He is to be feared, we cannot just do as we please and time and time again hope that He will look past these transgressions. But He will still forgive us if we are contrite and confess our sins, endeavouring not to do them again. We try to judge God as we do others. Selwyn Hughes states “ Those who think of God’s wrath in terms of a grumpy tantrum or a desire for retaliation- inflicting punishment for the sake of it, or in return for some injury received- do understand it. Divine wrath is not vindictiveness; it is divine perfection and issues from God because it is right.” Sin is intolerable to God, thus He will see to it that sin does not get the upper hand. He directs His anger against sin and not the person. “God cannot treat good and evil (sin) in the same way. He can look over it — look over it to the cross where it can be forgiven — but He cannot overlook it.” (S.H.) Blessings

Officials of Home Affairs rewarded

Service delivery at Home Affairs in Tzaneen showed huge improvement over the last year or so, and this didn’t go unnoticed. Members of the public wrote letters for publication to the media and as a result the local office manager and his staff were nominated for Coke Zero and Bulletin’s monthly award for service excellence. At the handig over of the award were Ms Iselle Rossouw (Coke Zero), Messrs Eddie Maphosa (Home Affairs Tzaneen), Sam Moremi (Home Affairs Polokwane) and Jean Aucamp (Bulletin). Friendliness and a quick turnover time for ID’s and passports motivated members of the community to nominate this previously much criticised office.

ATKV in aksie vir die taal

Die ATKV Letaba-tak het sakelui, leerlinge en leerkragte vir hul bydraes tot die bevordering van Afrikaans vereer. By die geleentheid het die Lamino-koor van Giyani (hierbo) opgetree en die byna honderd gaste se waardering en bewondering geniet. Die koor sukkel met finansies en mnr Peet Snyman van die Spar-groep in Giyani, Thohoyandou, Tzaneen en in Mod-

jadjiskloof is die enigste borg. ONDER REGS is Chantal Schoeman, mnr Magnus Steyn (die hoof van die Hoërskool Merensky) en Khutso Matlou. Die twee leerlinge is vereer vir hul prestasies in redenaarskompetisies tot op nasionale vlak, asook hul beoefening van Afrikaans as redenaars en in die algemeen. Chantal is in matriek en Khutso in Gr 11.

Trophy Toyota sponsors lion research Trophy Toyota of Modjadjiskloof was extremely proud to sponsor a vehicle to the Ajubatus Foundation. The Foundation funds specialist research into endangered

species. Their most recent project is the study of Lion Demographics in the Kruger National Park. The project is currently in its eighteenth month of operation, and is believed to be the largest study of lions ever undertaken in the KNP and possibly all of Africa. The Ajubatus Foundation provides the project with many of the key aspects to fund the projects — to assist the project the Trophy Group (consisting of Trophy Toyota, Trophy Vehicle Rentals & Transfers and Trophy Travel and Tourism) have joined together to sponsor the use of a double cab Toyota Hilux for the project. Annual Hajj pilgrimage is here again — ensure that you are well prepared for this

The annual Hajj pilgrimage, an obligatory pilgrimage for Muslims which results in a mass co-ordinated movement of millions of pilgrims from all over the world, is around the corner (next month). It is obligatory for every adult to perform the pilgrimage at least once. It takes place over a period of five days and the dates are adjusted according to the Lunar calendar. Most people walk the five kilometres from Mecca to Mina, like the Prophet Mohammed did. The pilgrimage has set rituals at specified sites in certain timeframes. All age groups can attend, but accreditation favour the elderly, as well as people attending the pilgrimage for the first time. Medical advice for travellers Persons attending the pilgrimage must be physically fit and in good health. Avoid heat stroke — drink lots of water. Vaccinations for Yellow Fever and Meningitis are compulsory. There is a list of other recommended vaccinations. All vaccinations and travel advice are

Persons on chronic medication should take an adequate supply of medication for the length of their stay, with an original script from their doctor. It would be wise to take a medical kit containing electrolytes, pain tablets, anti allergy cream for insect bites, rash, anti-emetic tablets for nausea, laxatives for constipation, antacid for indigestion and treatment for diarrhoea. Skin conditions can occur due to the high temperature. Fungal infections are common due to humidity and the heat. For chapped feet it is important to use moisturizers. Pilgrims tend to walk bare feet, but socks may be used, especially in Medina. Footwear should be bought a few weeks in advance, and should be worn before departure.

Unison returns to tea estate

The prolonged battle between the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (Gteda) and a tenant on the Sapekoe Tea Estate has finally subsided, when both parties settled for an agreement of understanding. A dispute developed early this year when Gteda took over operations to clear up the dilapidated and overgrown tea estate. Part of the programme was to renovate the existing houses and allocate them to staff members. Mr Gideon Breedt was one of the occu-

pants who did his own renovations at a huge cost, as he had a lease contract with the Makgoba Trust for ten years. He refused to leave the estate, despite threats and interferences which made life miserable for him and his wife Carrie-Anne. Breedt had a meeting with Mr Francis Mnisi, the head of the tea estate, recently and all their problems have been solved. He told the Bulletin this week that they returned to unison with no hard feelings.

Breakthrough with baboons rehabilitated in our area National Geographic specially arranged for the filming in the Tzaneen area of the world’s first scientifically rehabilitated baboon troop. Mr Bob Venter from Riverside Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre outside Tzaneen says: “In the past primates were placed in cages at rehabilitation centres. They’d then be captured, transported in boxes and set free. Less than ten percent survived because they were not properly rehabilitated.” He has successfully relocated twenty vervet troops in the two decades that he’s been involved in primates. Previously rehabilitated baboons were released in the Cradle of Mankind baboon sanctuary, but Venter found a conservancy (Kondowe) outside Phalaborwa. He rehabilitated and established a troop of 23 baboons. They were first in quarantine at Riverside for forty days to ensure they were parasite free, with no diabetes or TB. Diabetes occurs with wrong human feeding and if

the baboons have TB, also from humans, euthanasia is compulsory. The rehabilitation involved acclimatization, establishing a comfort zone, integrating them and ensuring self-sufficiency in an enclosure of just over a hectare. Each animal was medically assessed. The standard protocol morphological assessment and micro chipping completed the process and the baboons were released into the enclosure with electric fencing. Bob explains: “We’ve earmarked 24 October to switch off the electric fence and leave the gates open in case they need their comfort zone. Two weeks thereafter we will dismantle the fence and the baboons are free and will be able to recognise predators, food sources and repopulate. They will be monitored for another seven months.” Riverside Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre currently houses 549 vervets, seven baboons and seven samangos. — Susan Ettmayr

The owners, Mark and Sheneen Stevens are originally from Joburg. They moved to Tzaneen in 2001 and took over Bonanza Liquor House, which has grown into a very successful business. The Stevens’ have been married for fourteen years and have

three children, twelve-year-old Jordan and the eight-year-old twins, Ashton and Ronan. Overland Tzaneen is committed to their customers and their slogan is ‘always going the extra mile’. To continue ‘going the extra mile’ they have recently changed to the Overland-franchise to provide better prices for customers.

BO:Die SA Skyfskietkampioenskappe is onlangs in Bellville, Kaapstad gehou. Sewe van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se skuts was deel van die Limpopo-span wat hul staal teen die res van die land se beste skuts gaan meet het. Daar was 397 skuts by die kompetisie. Lambré Griesel het sewende in die 10 m staan posisie met ’n telling van 357 uit 400 en twaalfde in die o.21-afdeling 1085 uit 1200 punte en ’n gemiddeld van 90.3% geëindig. Daar was slegs 3,3% verskil tussen hom en die wenner. Jan-Daniël Griesel en Machané Dupper het elk 84% behaal, Bernadine Voster 81,4%, Werner van Rensburg 79% en TJ Voster 72%. Mnr. Lammie Griesel, wat ook die voorsitter van die Limpopo Skole Skyfskietunie is, het ook die span vergesel. Voor is mnr Griesel (afrigter), TJ Voster en Machané Dupper. Erik de Jager and Pieter Gouws came a close second in their MDJ Motorsport VW Citi Golf after a titanic battle over seven special stages and 90 km of gravel racing during the penultimate round of the Northern Regions rally Championship, the SAM 100 Rally in Cullinan recently. De Jager and Gouws ended in second place followed by Eddie Simpson and Marco Lottering of Simpson Motors. De Jager now trails Simpson by one championship point, while Gouws leads Lottering by two points in the navigators’ championship. In the final race the championship title will go to the team that finishes on the podium ahead of the other. The final round, the SCC Pretoria All Tar Rally, will be on 12 November.

Ben Vorster het PHS in die eindstryd met sewe paatjies getroef. PHS het eerste gekolf en met hul telling op 82 vir twee paaltjies het dit gelyk of die Vossies ’n telling van nagenoeg 240 gaan jaag. Maar die draaiboulers het die gang van die wedstryd verander deur ses paaltjies tussen hulle te laat kantel. John Viljoen het drie paaltjies en Matome Modiba twee paaltjies laat kantel. PHS is ook weens briljante veldwerk tot slegs 178 lopies beperk. Ben Vorster het teen middagete op 113 lopies vir een paaltjie gestaan. Matome Modiba was uit vir 38 lopies.
