Nguni: Probably the most hardy bovine breed in the world. But not hardy enough. All it takes is starvation and neglect to break the spirit of this magnificent beast. Are these alarming signs of the disintegration of our society’s moral fibre? Desperate attempts by the national council of the SPCA, members of the public and farmers alike did not have any impact on Limpopo’s department of sports, arts & culture to care for a herd of Nguni’s at the Muti wa Vatsonga Open Air Museum at
Eiland. On Tuesday 34 heads of cattle had to be put down. They were so weak that a veterinary surgeon found they couldn’t even be moved. The department ignored earlier warnings and eventually a court order had to be obtained. • Continued on page 4

Iaan Roets SAPS, fresh out of rubber bullets? Indien iemand ‘n protesoptog wil reël, kontak my, ek het ’n kontak by FHM.
Henry En Brigitte Marais Ek gaan definitief Woolworths boikot! Sal my wit geld by iemand uitgee wat wit mense aanstel! Monica Swanepoel Sal nooit, nooit weer by Woollies koop nie.

Ivan De Bruyn Sugerloaf, you’ve always been my Woolworths. Agree, rather support the locals. Bernard Nel Vote with your wallet.

Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie!

Daar is ’n nuwe kok in Tzaneen.

No comment! The GTM’s mayor, Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, hosted a media networking day two months ago. During this meeting the acting director of corporate services, Mr Thulani Twala, announced with big fanfare that the GTM would like to establish and maintain good relations with the media. His sentiments were echoed by the media representatives in attendance. However, a mere six weeks later the GTM decided that they didn’t like the type of questions raised by the media and simply ignored our request for answers. Or is there another reason for their silence? On 14 August we presented the following media enquiry to the GTM. We are still waiting for a response. • The GTM is aware of illegal housing structures in Tzaneen. What action is the municipality going to take against the person(s) involved? Will the municipality take action by opening a criminal case against the person(s) for the alleged contravention of the municipal by-laws? How long is this likely to take for the GTM to deal with these issues? Is the municipality aware of similar cases? If so, what action (if any) has been taken? And what was the outcome? • An MTN container has been placed opposite the Central Mall next to the consulting rooms of drs Visser en Louwrens. Has permission been granted for this? Who is the rightful owner of the piece of land? People are expressing concern over the placement of the container. What does the GTM say? • Residents are concerned about the site behind the Sasol R71, where quite a sizeable piece of land has been re-shaped and a lot of filling material has been dumped. The biggest concern is that this will be affecting the natural flow of water in the small river. Has an environmental study been done to determine the impact of this? If not what is the GTM doing about this? • May we please remind you to send the following items as per our agreement yesterday? • Photos of all newly appointed directors; photo of the Acting MM; photo of the CFO (also supply us with an interview date with the CFO for a profile, as discussed) • The Traffic master plan • A copy of the 20-30-vision document.

Hy het later by Tzaneen Swaarvoertuie aangesluit.

Goeie bure
Life is so short we need to live each day as if it is our last. When we wake up each morning we know for a fact that God has given us yet another day, it is how we use this gift to us that counts. Often, we wake up with all the joys of life yet we see so little in its beauty. If we are working then our day starts at a speed we find we have so much to do before going to work that we often forget to stop a few moments and just admire the day God has given us. The pressures of life often get to us and sometimes we just do not know how to cope. The secret is in sharing our concerns with a few close friends or family. Do not keep your unhappiness bottled up because before you know it that little hill becomes a huge mountain. There will always be someone you can turn to. The old adage “A stranger is just a friend you do not know” can never be truer than when times are hard. Our religious leaders have been called to serve God by serving you. Believe it or not you do not have to only speak to your specific leader, there are others who are only willing to help. You just need to ask them, once again I emphasise that they are there to serve, not for their own gain but for the glorification of God. Many a time you may not be able to contact your specific religious leader in the time of crisis but rest assured there are others out there. I urge you all to get to know who to contact and do not leave it until you no longer know what to do. If you feel that you are not religious and are thus doubtful to contact a religious leader, rest assured they are not there to judge you or to force you to become religious, although it will be a plus for them if you change your mind. God works through all people and loves each and everyone of us no matter who are what we have done. His arms are always open. All we need is just a spark, a kind word and our life will seem less burdensome. So take that step when you are feeling low and speak to someone. Blessings
More se kragmeting is deurslaggewend.
GTM: Feedback
Cllr. Rene Pohl, Box 482, Duivelskloof, writes: The third GTM Council Meeting took place on 28 August. Several Questions and a Motion were handed in to be answered in writing. The availability, distribution, quality and purification of water in the rural areas is of great concern to the DA. The municipality blames the Mopani District as the Water Services Authority, in charge of the operation and maintenance of both Water Works (Thabina Village) and Wastewater Works (Lenenye oxidation ponds). The reply on the DA’s questions concerning the experience needed to qualify for the position of Director Corporate Services only confirmed the DA’s suspicion that Mr. Thulani Twala does not qualify according to the Municipal Systems Amendment Act, 2011. The MEC granted the extension of Mr. Twala’s contract, to act in this position, on condition that the Municipality complies to the stipulations of the Act. The DA specifically asked whether the MEC was made aware of the fact that Mr. Twala does not have the relevant 2 year senior level management experience. The written reply received stated that the 2 years senior management experience was unfortunately omitted in the letter to the MEC! The DA also requested why Mr. Twala’s application for the position of Director Corporate Services was not rejected. The reply was that this matter rests solely within the competency of both the short listing and interviewing panels. The
Letters • Briewe DA strongly believes in ‘fit for purpose’ and will not allow sub-standard appointments, or any appointments where needed qualifications and the relevant experience is in contradiction to any relevant law! This matter will be taken to the MEC for Local Government for further investigation. There are currently 6 cases before the High Court according to the Legal Division of Corporate Services. The DA asked from which account these monies would be paid from, as the amount comes to almost R10m, and whether this is fruitless and wasteful expenditure. If so, the Auditor General must be notified according to the Municipal Finance Management Act, and this will have a negative effect on the Auditor General’s Report. The reply received was that in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act a fruitless and wasteful expenditure would refer to an expenditure which would not have been incurred had proper process been followed, therefore it is not the case. The monies are paid from the Legal Division. The DA is of the opinion that this is fruitless and wasteful expenditure due to incompetency, but only the Auditor General’s report will confirm this. Questions were also raised about overtime payment and the control thereof. A motion about the illegal hawker selling goods under the bridge on the R71 was omitted, but the DA refused to be ignored. The illegal hawker’s husband is Mr.
Machete, an employee of the GTM in a senior position. This concern has now been raised for the third time in full Council Meetings! The DA insisted that this be recorded in the minutes that law enforcement does not take place in Ward 15, and that the relevant steps be taken against the officials accountable for the application thereof. There will be a Ward 15 Community Meeting on 25 Sept. at 18:00, at the Civic Centre (GTM). This is a platform where residents can lodge complaints, raise concerns and give input concerning municipal issues. I can be contacted at cell. nu 079 8725 012.
What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 4 The interpretation of the Department of Arts and Culture as stated in their list of local and district municipality is misleading and promotes distraction and diversion of the historical heritage of certain cultural groups, and in particular the BaTsanene Community, as this action is not “… a reverse form of discrimination,…” Source: Parliamen-
tary Monitoring Group: Meeting; 17 June 2008 p.2 of 9 – Google’s catch: pmg.org.za/report/20080617 – geographical-names-department-arts-culture-briefingsouth-south-african-art. Other explanations of what the name “Tzaneen” means:
One other reader is said to believe that “The name Tzaneen probably comes from “Dzanani” and is cited as having said: “I was told that the name came from Dzudzanani which means “living together in harmony”. The ancient capital of the Venda Kingdom was in Dzudzanani before King Mudhzedzi Ramabulana (King Thohoyandou’s son) moved it to Makhado (former Louis Trichardt) in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Makhado is 30 km south-west of Dzudzanani. Dzudzanani was later referred to as Dzanani (the “Dzu” part of it was discarded). When colonialists conquered Venda in 1898 King Mphephu Tshilamulela’s palace was at mount Swongozwi (Hangklip)in Makhado. King Mphephu was King Makhado’s son. The Royal Family was forcibly relocated to Dzudzanani (Dzanani) after Maskhado was declared a “white
It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks. area” under the 1913 Land Act”. – Pfanani Another reader also writes: “I was told that the name Tzaneen came from the name Dzanani. This was the place where the vha-Venda lived many years ago. It is said that the whole area from Limpopo (Vhembe) river to the now called Olifants river was occupied by vha Venda to the side of Madzivhanombe (around Giyani). Near Tzaneen is Balobedu (where some venda-origin people are still staying)” An alternate and most probably incorrect explanation is also floating around, namely: “… the name Tzaneen originated from the Sepedi word tsaneng, which loosely translated means “the place where people gather.” (Source: http://www.teacher.co.za/cms/article 2002 05 6 5351.html)”. (Source: http://africanlanguages.com/south africa/place names.html) The above explanation by the said writers is as much “… most probably incorrect explanation …” and “… floating around …” as the one referred to in the last paragraph above. Though his/ her explanation of the word Dzudzanani meaning “living together in harmony” is almost the same as Mack Mamaboke Letswalo’s “... people getting together”, or Miss Kgware’s “come together” or “the
place where people gather”, …. the meaning for Tzaneen as “people who live together.” ‘come together’?” is a complete wrong and misleading one. (Source: http://www.limpopohappennings.co.za/tzaneenhomepage.htm). In the dialect of the BaTsanene themselves and in the Northern Sotho language one is not aware of any single word close to the words tsanene or tsaneng that is associated with ‘come together.’ Tzaneen does not come or derived from Tsaneng and the latter does not mean ‘come together’. Tzaneen is a corrupted word meant to refer to Tsanene and the latter does mean ‘a place with hundreds and hundreds of people’ or ‘a place with people in their hundreds’; implying ‘a place with many people’ or ‘a place of many people’ or ‘a place where there are many people’. Tsanene is a word used by the community of the BaTsanene and it was derived from a ChiKaranga or ChiShona word ‘Zana’ which means ‘one hundred’. The people called themselves the BaTsanene because they were a concentrated number of people in several hundreds located in the same area, that is, much more than one hundred; or that they were in many hundreds – hence BaTsanene, meaning people in their hundreds, implying ‘many people’. Where there are many people or hundreds and hundreds of people residing in the same area, there are obviously many households or hundreds and hundreds of households that are composed of one or more houses which collectively count to hundreds of houses which become a village or villages. • To be continued

Gedurende Januarie 2011 is ‘n nuwe ouderdomsgroep (peuters vanaf agtien maande) by die kleuterskool ingelyf. Dit is as ‘n private aktiwiteit deur me Retha Schwab behartig.

Old favourite has a brand new look The Caltex filling station in Modjadjiskloof has been a familiar landmark since 1966. After a few months’ renovation it now boasts the latest technology and signage. Caltex was opened in April 1966 by Stanley and Jenny Murray and a year later Trophy Toyota was started. The business has remained in the family ever since. This year marked the third renovation the business has undergone, and is also the year they welcomed the third generation of the family into the business. Construction of the new filling station started in June and was finished last month. Modjadjiskloof’s Caltex is now the first Caltex in Limpopo with the new concept signage and the most advanced technology available. Trophy Toyota and Caltex care about the environment and all the building procedures underwent and followed strict environmental procedures. The filling station sells 50 ppm diesel, ULP and LRP in its best quality. They are now able to cater for more customers and provide better quality service with the new technology pumps.
They have gone into partnership with BF distributors, who have been supplying their fuel for many years. Customers can also look forward to Trophy’s new Toyota showroom, which will be open early November, as it will be a world class facility. Motorists are welcome to visit Trophy Toyota and Caltex for friendly service or contact them on 015 309 8854.
The original Caltex in Modjadjiskloof was opened in 1966, with Trophy Toyota opening a year later. This is what it looked like in 1968.
Tzn Eco Club plans next exciting outing for bird watchers The Tzaneen Eco Club will be “transported” to central Mozambique and the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe for their next talk. Dalena Mostert, passionate birder and photographer, will talk about her recent birding trip to these areas and show off some of her stunning photos. Mostert grew up in the Karoo. Her father loved nature and taught his family about the veld,
the animals and birds. In 1990 she became extremely ill and suffered from post-traumatic depression. She started birding as a therapy, and never stopped! It became such a passion that she joined Birdingpal, started digiscoping, and in 2006 became serious about bird photography. She works at Westfalia in the field of intellectual property and has many other hobbies including reading, handicraft, astronomy and gardening.

10 Principles of training by Damian Jansen van Rensburg Principle 7 – Coordination Coordination in fitness refers to your ability to perform smooth and controlled complex muscular movements with ease. You can improve your coordination in fitness and physical activities by performing particular movements faster or increasing the number of obstacles you must contend with to perform a particular movement. This can be done by doing circuits or supersets as well as progressing exercises to a higher difficulty. Altering the size and weight of objects that you use during activities,
Die Hilux is dieselfde aand verlate by Venbeck gekry. Retha Nel retha@bulletin.us.com

gunstiger was.
The Tzaneen Dam will once again play host to rowing later this month. Olympic and world class competitors from Oxford University in England and the University of Johannesburg will go head to head in two races, a 500 m sprint and a 2 000 m international race, on Thursday 27 September. The sprint is scheduled for 14:30 and the international race for 15:30. The day’s rowing should make for some exciting viewing for both young and old. Especially schools are invited to support the event. Rowing was in the news earlier in the year when the South African rowing squad
trained and made their final preparations in Tzaneen. They spent six weeks on the Ebenezer and Tzaneen Dams before leaving for the Olympic Games in London in August. The men’s lightweight four team of James Thompson, Mathew Brittain, John Smith and Lawrence Ndlovu won the gold medal in the 2 000 m event.
