Tzaneen has received a handsome windfall of quite a few million Rand, thanks to the Minister of Correctional Services, who took too long to sign a simple document. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality was supposed to supply a powerful electricity sub-station from the new high voltage cable that is currently being installed (underground), encircling Tzaneen. However, there was a problem with a servitude and the Minister had to sign a document, so that the sub-station could be erected and the cable installed. But the process was stalled to a point where the GTM’s electricity department could not delay the underground installation of the new high voltage cable any longer. So the GTM got a small piece of land from the Roman Catholic Church in Voortrekker Road (the street going to Tzangeni and the Tzaneen Dam). When the Correctional
Services finally resolved the servitude problem, it was too late to reverse the process. Now they have to accept the responsibility (which they have done) for the new substation. It is not a small installation, as the new state-of-the-art prison being built next to the old facility (to the south-west of Aqua Park) needs much more power than the old prison could ever have dreamt of. They will have to pick up this tab, thus saving the GTM an expense that could come in handy in the current flat economic situation. We wanted to discuss finer details of this development with the GTM’s chief electrical engineer, Mr Pierre van den Heever, but he has been off sick and unavailable since Monday. — Francois Aucamp editor@bulletin.us.com

Samwu went on strike at the Greater Letaba Municipality yesterday. It comes as no surprise that the workers demand steep salary increases. We caught one of their comrades on camera. He refused to give us his name.
