Tzaneen has received a handsome windfall of quite a few million Rand, thanks to the Minister of Correctional Services, who took too long to sign a simple document. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality was supposed to supply a powerful electricity sub-station from the new high voltage cable that is currently being installed (underground), encircling Tzaneen. However, there was a problem with a servitude and the Minister had to sign a document, so that the sub-station could be erected and the cable installed. But the process was stalled to a point where the GTM’s electricity department could not delay the underground installation of the new high voltage cable any longer. So the GTM got a small piece of land from the Roman Catholic Church in Voortrekker Road (the street going to Tzangeni and the Tzaneen Dam). When the Correctional
Services finally resolved the servitude problem, it was too late to reverse the process. Now they have to accept the responsibility (which they have done) for the new substation. It is not a small installation, as the new state-of-the-art prison being built next to the old facility (to the south-west of Aqua Park) needs much more power than the old prison could ever have dreamt of. They will have to pick up this tab, thus saving the GTM an expense that could come in handy in the current flat economic situation. We wanted to discuss finer details of this development with the GTM’s chief electrical engineer, Mr Pierre van den Heever, but he has been off sick and unavailable since Monday. — Francois Aucamp editor@bulletin.us.com

There’s money in religion, some say...

Energetic 17 year-old Shonny Thuketana from Nkowankowa is the first black girl in the history of Ben Vorster High School to take up the reigns as head girl. Two black deputy head boys, Nsovo Shandlale and Curtys Maakamela, are also making history alongside Shonny. The enthusiastic girl has shown leadership qualities from an early age. She was the deputy head girl at Dr Annecke Primary School in Letsitele, and the newly elected head boy of Ben Vorster, BJ Vorster was the head boy. Shonny is gifted in both academics and sport and she was recently taken up in the Vossies’ first netball team. She also takes part in athletics. In gr 4, Shonny was the only girl to play cricket. “I used to win ‘girl of the match’ as I was the only one to participate”, she says laughingly. She performs brilliantly in academics and regards herself as being responsible. She used to take the first place on the top ten in Dr Annecke, and is still under the top twenty achievers in her grade. Shonny ‘s subjects include English, Tsonga, Math, Physics, Accounting and Life Science (her favourite subject). She also understands Afrikaans and will put in a good effort to respond in the language. The bright young girl, who has taken a particular interest in studying media and com-
munications, would like to study at UCT or UWC — anywhere close to the beach. When asked about her mission for this year, she confidently answers that Ben Vorster is a wonderful school and there is not much she would want to change. She would, however, like to implement even more culture into the school and get learners excited about taking part in everything the school has to offer. “We are forever talking about ‘oomph’. The school already has it, we just have to multiply the ‘oomph’!” Shonny believes that she has the best team of leaders behind her and commends the school for choosing such good leaders. “Our personalities work so well together”. She admits that being head girl puts her under pressure, and more so because she is the first black girl in the position. “But I can handle it”, she says easily. “I believe in myself.” Shonny says her best personality trait is her approachability. Learners feel comfortable raising issues with her, as she is an excellent listener. Even though this small-town girl seems shy at first, she is certainly not to be underestimated. She is goal-orientated and driven and her positive energy is contagious. — Amelia de Ridder amelia@bulletin.us.com

Community oppose bail The community of Nhlaniki village, Giyani, wants the court to deny bail for the suspect in the rape and murder of an 18 year-old mentally challenged girl. The suspect, Douglas Raster Baloyi( 35), allegedly raped and murdered Nsovo Pinkie Moyana and dumped her body in the bushes on 10 July. During his second court appearance on Tuesday, the community of Nhlaniki village who had packed the courtroom to its capacity brought a petition to Magistrate Gordon Hlungwani, demanding that the suspect be denied bail. The case was postponed to 12 August to allow for further investigation before the application for bail could be heard. The suspect remains in custody.
Meanwhile the community has chased away the suspect’s mother, accusing her of being an accomplice. She was allegedly escorted out of the village by police after the community had marched to her house over the weekend and demanded that she left before they would burn her alive, trapped inside her house. She is currently in hiding. “We have submitted a memorandum to the prosecutor with evidence that suggests that the girl was murdered inside the suspect’s house and that the mother may have participated in disposing of the body,” said Mr David Mathye, the chairperson of the committee that represents the community in the village. —Orlando Chauke: Report and photos
Life sentence Samuel Mohale (24) from Morotholong village at Sekgopo has been sentenced to life in prison after raping a minor. He was sentenced in the Tzaneen Regional Court last week. The incident took place last year on 21 December, when the minor met the rapist while she was walking. She knew Mohale, although not personally. He approached her and demanded sex. The minor refused and was brutally beaten by Mohale, who then forced her to have sex with him on the street. He later

Care group needs help Yasmeen Moosa, Tzaneen Care Group, contact number 083 256 4861, writes: Tzaneen Care Group consists of a group of volunteers who care and attend mainly to the needs of cancer patients, as well as those who have other ailments. The group was founded in 1989 when a need was identified for volunteers who were prepared to help care for cancer patients and the terminally ill. Home care, counselling, support for patients and their families as well as survivor support make up some of the groups duties. In recent years the group has purchased medical equipment which is borrowed to members of the community. The group is a non-profit organization solely reliant on the goodwill and donations from the community. All funds are used solely for patients in and around the Tzaneen area. On the 19th October 2013 (TBC), Tzaneen Care Group will be hosting a brunch in

Die laaste boekefees was in 2005.

Navrae: Dia by 083 726 1180 of info@boekejol.co.za.
Sy kom toe daar staan en sê: “Here, hinder dit U nie dat my suster my alleen laat bedien nie? Sê sy moet my kom help!”

“Hy is slimmer as ek daarmee.”

“Johan hou my positief — hy is my steunpilaar.”

‘New’ church building to be inaugurated The Haenertsburg Christian Church (HCC) invites everyone to the first service in their new enlarged church at 7 Rissik Street. The church can now accommodate more people and has a beautiful new interior and comfortable seating, to make everyone feel at home. The HCC was founded and started by pastor Ian LoughorClarke on 10 March 1999 and has grown from strength to strength. While they were still in the Community Hall the pastor prophesied and said that one day God would give them the building that they now own and
fellowship in. It happened literally as he had spoken, for after all the subdivisions and selling of adjacent property and land (a number of years ago) they were able to pay off the church building and had literally been given the property. All the latest expansion and improvement have once again been done without any debt. People are welcome to join them on Sunday (28 July) at 09:00 to share in the celebration thanksgiving service until 10:30. Enquiries: 015 276 1111 or visit www.haenertsburgchristianchurch.co.za.

BMC scholar visits Ecuador A hospitality studies student at Blue Mountain College (BMC), Kelly Windmeier-Modjadji, spent the June holidays in Ecuador, South America, to work and learn alongside worldrenowned chefs at the Hilton Hotel. The hotel commented on his good manners, work ethic and positive attitude. Kelly says that he was able to perform so well as a result of the life skills acquired at BMC. He says that
before he came to BMC he didn’t know what it was to be wholehearted, respectful, considerate, neat and tidy and to have manners and maintain a good work ethic. He attributes all these good character qualities to the input he received and continues to receive in the academic and practical programmes at BMC. Kelly is seen on the photo on the left with one of the hotel’s number of chefs.

Leopards feel ready for the new season He further indicated that they were forced to release a large number of their seasoned players recently as a way of complying with the rules and regulations of the league, which dictate that NFD teams must feature at least five u.23 players at a time in all matches. Papic further stated that it was not easy for them to let the highly experienced players go, but rules were rules and they must be complied with. “We could not keep players that we knew we were not going to utilize, hence the radical decision to let them go,” he said. Although he was reluctant to disclose the names of the players who had made the grade in the trials, we were reliably informed that some of the young talent whose deals with Lidoda Duvha had already been signed and sealed included Marks Munyai (from Rospa United), Hulisani Mathugana (Phungo All Stars), Ivan Mahangwahaya (Phungo All Stars) and Khumbudzo “Shavy” Muvhango from Maweja Takers. — LiN News/Limpopo Mirror Jaco Moller (18), owner of Extreme ATV Tzaneen, finished fifth in the national quad category of the Bell 400 race meeting. He has moved into the senior category in off-road racing after winning the junior national championship last year. This was the first time he tackled and completed a 360 kilometer race. He finished 5th in the Q1 class championship in the Bell 400.
Headmaster selected for SA Masters Hockey team Over a thousand hockey players took part in the annual Time Freight SA Masters hockey inter-provincial tournament. The tournament, played on nine astro-turfs in Pietermaritzburg included 43 men’s and 23 women’s teams from the various provinces as well as Zimbabwe. This year’s tournament had an added incentive in that an Over 40’s national hockey team was selected to represent SA in the upcoming European Open to be held in Northern Ireland between 10 and 18 August. The Headmaster of Stanford Lake College, Mr Craig Carolan, who played for SA at u.21 as well as at senior level, represented the eventual winners of the inter-provincial tournament, Kwa-Zulu Natal. het dat skeidsregters soms foute maak, het die owerhede teësinnig besluit om maar wel TV se hulp in te roep. “There is nothing better than a good, blind referee.” — Bobby Heenan Anglers from all over SA congregated at the Tzaneen Dam for the SA Carp Classic from 6-13 July. The competition was fierce and the top positions changed daily. The tournament winners secured their win with only two minutes left on the clock. The coach of Black Leopards, Mr Kostadin Papic, believes that his team is ready to absorb the heat for the new season. According to him, the team is now doing what he described as the “final touches” before the activities for the new season start. As part of their preparations for the new life in the National First Division (NFD), Black Leopards were conducting trials for young players during the past month. Papic revealed that about 700 talented players from all around the province tried their luck during the trials. According to him, they had selected forty players from the pool and they wanted to trim the group down to ten players. He mentioned that there was a lot of talent in Limpopo. “I must be honest: it was not easy to select the forty players from a pool of about 700 excellent players,” he said. He indicated that they will play four friendly matches in the next two weeks in a bid to put the newly recruited players to the test.

Ruan Venter blaas nasionaal!

Starter let quick Moosa down Port Elizabeth was home to the tough and tricky Volkswagen Rally, the fourth round of the 2013 SA National Rally Championship. With 13 stages and 173 km of timed competition on Friday and Saturday, the event’s 44 entrants vied for victory in what was a demanding rally. Tzaneen’s Team Total with Mohammed Moosa and his co-driver, Andre Vermeulen, were locked in a high-speed battle for
sixth position overall and the lead of the S2000 Challenge Class, in their Toyota Auris S2000 rally machine. Day One saw Moosa push his factory-backed rivals to their limits, and was fighting strongly for sixth place overall. Suffering two punctures cost Moosa over one minute in valuable stage time to his rivals, but this did not dampen his overall speed. Restarting the event on Day, he immediately set the tone by reeling
in his rivals with scintillating stage times in the morning’s opening speed tests. On the penultimate stage of the event, in sixth place overall and second position in S2000 Challenge Class, Moosa’s car snapped a driveshaft. This caused the car to underperform drastically and led to a spin. The car then refused to start and it cost him over seven minutes of stage time. This dropped him to tenth position overall and fourth in the S2000 Challenge Class at the end of the event. The next competitive outing for Moosa will be on the Gauteng Rally on 16 & 17 August.
