Deadly new virus

Skou volgende week!

MERS-CoV ‘Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome’

South Africans, and especially Lowvelders, seem to be either totally unaware or rather ignorant of a new virus that is becoming rampant in certain countries. Furthermore the virus is at this stage almost impossible to retain, whilst treating it has the medical profession at sixes and sevens. So far there is no cure that has been found to be effective and the UN’s World Health Organisation is on

high alert regarding the virus and the desperate need for a cure to combat it. We are warning people today, without being alarmistic. This time of the year with Ramadan being celebrated, many people travel to the Middle East, where the virus was first identified and where it has so far claimed the most lives. • Read the full story inside on page 6

Vlieg

“Homoseksuele oriëntasie is nie sonde nie. Daar is twee goed waaroor daar konsensus is.

• “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Third smallest SPCA fights to survive Businesses with cats are also working with the SPCA by speying the cats and creating controlled colonies. Several outreach programs are held to dip and treat animals whose owners cannot otherwise afford it. The outreaches during 2012/2013 have been successful. Another setback this year was the veld fire that caused damage to parts of the SPCA’s premises and buildings. “Thankfully we received a lot of press coverage, resulting in a lot of donations, help and volunteers who arrived to offer free labour. A very successful open day was held earlier this year, where the buildings were repainted and repaired,” Potgieter said. The SPCA still needs a lot of help as they are currently operating on a loss of about R2 000/month. The kennels cause the biggest problem, since they are constantly filled with lost animals. Owners who lose their animals are encouraged to immediately contact the SPCA. “We want to thank all the amazing sponsors, donors and volunteers who helped us during the past year. Thanks to all of them the Letaba SPCA has been able to remain open during these tough economic times, despite being the third smallest SPCA in the country,” Potgieter said. — Retha Nel retha@bulletin.us.com

One of the biggest concerns in the Greater Tzaneen area is stray animals, a small group of Letaba SPCA supporters heard during the organisation’s recent AGM. Ms Ellie Potgieter, chairperson and inspector of the Letaba SPCA, reported on the increasing complaints of stray animals attacking both people and animals. Potgieter urges people to catch the animals themselves or to just keep them in an enclosed space, before calling the SPCA. They have to deal with a large number of cruelty cases and cannot waste time chasing stray dogs. There are currently three court cases that the Letaba SPCA is involved with — a man in Giyani who allegedly used the SPCA’s name to profit from, the Muti wa Vatsonga Nguni-cattle cruelty case where neglected cattle had to be put out and a case of animal cruelty of a dog that was severely mistreated. The SPCA does not tolerate animal cruelty and may issue severe penalties to offenders. However, they cannot just take animals away from their owners if they look healthy but are causing trouble. A case has to be opened at the SAPS and the police have to request the SPCA to remove it from the owner. Currently the Letaba SPCA is happy with the community’s efforts to adopt animals.

Fire in the heart of Tzaneen did not cause damage Homeless people in Tzaneen sleep in strange places. Despite the cold some even sleep in skimpy shelters in the bushes in town. Last week two of these bush sleepers allegedly started a fire in the bushes in the vicinity of numerous businesses. The fire brigade quickly put it out and at no stage did in threaten to spread. The fire caused a spectacular night view of the area (and at times it felt a bit spooky) — Own photo

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Tzaneen

How often do we as humans “compartmentalise” others, or let me put it another way: How often do we put others into boxes, all because they do not fit into our social, ethical, or moral standards? I am not saying that we should readily accept all, just to be known as “nice”. But what happens if we judge others too harshly, because of something they have done of which because of their upbringing has seemed right to them. This does not include heinous crimes, such as murder, rape, family violence and violence against children. Yet we put them in a “box” and if they are lucky the will be able to escape one day, but until that time we will disregard them, have no contact with them, in fact where it is possible we will exclude them from our lives. Imagine God doing the same thing? “The Jews who are supposed to be My chosen race, have not accepted My Son: The Muslims profess to be praying to me, but I am not so sure, they too have not accepted My Son. So perhaps I should put them in a box and attend to them only on their Sabbath days? The main-line churches will have to be put into another box, yet they do not always see eye-eye, but I am working on that. They will have to go into my Sunday box. How about the Seventh Day Adventists, perhaps, I must also put them into my Saturday box, but they have accepted My Son? Then comes the Chrematistic Churches: where do I place them? What about the Jehovah Witnesses: where do I put them, after all most of the others do not accept their doctrine? But this is not the God I know and love. The one I know loves us all no matter who, or what we are. I accepted Christ as my Saviour and He has called me to serve Him as a priest. Now, I did not ask for this “position” but He had other plans for me and more and more I am becoming aware of the costs of following Him. But I know this is what He wants of me and I am prepared to leave it all in His hands. I wonder how many of you would be prepared to change in order to follow Him? Blessings for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the WHO is closely monitoring the situation in South Africa. The preparedness and response acitivities in South Africa include: Situation updates were provide to provinces and other stake holders. Although at this time, WHO does not advise special screening at ports of entry with regard to this event, nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied, provinces were urged to review their preparedness and response capacity and especially ensure functional outbreak response teams. The NICD has developed an MERS-CoV alert which is regularly updated; the alert includes case definitions and advice to clinicians regarding case management and criteria for laboratory testing. A draft MERS-CoV action plan has been developed and will be implemented should the need arise. Letters to the Provincial Heads of Health. SAMA and HPCSA were drafted, updating them on the MERS-CoV situation and informing them of the management of suspected cases. Enhanced preparedness and response capacity will mitigate the effect of MERSCoV and reduce the associated morbidity and mortality if the virus reaches the country. Recommended actions: Deputy DirectorGeneral: Primary Health Care takes note fo MERS-CoV infections and signs letters to the Provincial Heads of Health, SAMA and HPCSA, updating them on the MERSCoV situation and informing them of the management of suspected cases.

‘Maak ‘n verskil!’

“My huwelik is wonderlik!

my hartseer as mense swaarkry.”

Hy glo geld sal kom as jy‘n verskil in iemand se lewe maak. “Dit was great.”

ChristopherLee is natuurlik ‘n jong held in Tzaneen.

Kaskar-kaskenades weer ‘n sukses

LINKS: Daar is baie hard gekonsentreer.

Ten ways to boost your metabolism Don’t skip Breakfast Skipping breakfast causes your body to store fat rather than use it. People who skip breakfast also tend to eat extra kilojoules during the rest of the day. Eat something within an hour of waking to boost your metabolism, and keep your energy high and cravings low. Eat a highfibre, lean protean breakfast like eggs with wholegrain toast, oatmeal with nuts or fruit with cottage cheese.

Start exercising Aerobic workouts and weight training are some of the best ways to boost your metabolism. A simple strength-training programme can help build muscle and keep your metabolism running optimally and moderate exercise like

walking can burn three to six times more kilojoules per minute. High intensity exercise like interval training can burn more than twelve times as many kilojoules. Lastly, try exercising in the morning and in frequent bouts to jump start your metabolic rate.

Don’t starve yourself Your body needs a certain amount of kilojoules to function properly. If you don’t eat enough, your metabolism will slow to conserve energy. This makes it to harder to lose weight and easier to gain it. If the time between meals is too long you will get too hungry and overeat at your next meal. Rather have six small balanced meals throughout the day, three to four hours apart.

Spice it up Meals containing spicy ingredients can temporarily increase your metabolism by around 8%. Hot foods increase the release of your body’s adrenaline hormones which stimulates the metabolism and increased the kilojoules you burn. The compound Capsaicin, which gives chillies and peppers their delicious burn, is believed to help burn more calories immediately after a meal. The capsaicin in spicy foods may also help you feel full after a meal, because it is thought to act as an appetite suppressant.

into energy. A lack of them causes your metabolism to slow and makes you tired and depressed. Eat Vitamin B rich foods like eggs, poultry, oats, brown rice, fish, spinach and broccoli.

Catch some zzz’s Make sure to get between seven and nine hours sleep. Besides recharging, growth hormones and melatonin are release to aid your metabolism. When these hormones’ levels are low, it releases cortisol, a stress hormone, which slows the metabolism and encourages the storage of fat.

Get a boost with the B’s

Go green… tea

B vitamins give your metabolism a boost and are crucial for converting carbohydrates, fats and proteins

Green tea is not just for slimmers. According to studies, green tea extracts can also boost your metabolism. Green tea contains high concentrations of catechin polyphenols, which work to increase the rate your body burn energy. It is also believed to help regulate glucose and act as an appetite suppressant.

Get some Eastern inspiration For centuries Chinese herbs have been used to boost the metabolism, encourage di-

gest i o n a n d b o o s t energy levels. Chinese herbs include immature citrus peel, magnolia bark, hawthorn berry, ginger, cinnamon and ginseng. Although they are healthy, be sure to always consult with your doctor or a pharmacist before taking supplements or any of these herbs.

Fill up on Magnesium Your body needs Magnesium to metabolise energy and synthesise protein. Start eating magnesiumrich foods like green vegetables, nuts, wholegrain cereals, peas and beans.

Fill up that glass One of the easiest and safest ways to burn kilojoules is to drink cold water. The cold water will force your body to burn more energy to warm up its temperature.

How to keep fruit and veg fresh Are you tired of fruits and veggies rotting before you can eat them? There is a correct way to store each fruit/vegetable, to make them last longer. Compiled by Retha Nel

Source: www.mythirtyspot.com

Avocados: place in a paper bag at room temperature. To speed up the ripening, place an apple in the bag with them. Beans: shelling — open container in the fridge, eat asap. Some recommend freezing them if you’re not going to eat them right away. Broccoli: place in an open container in the fridge or wrap in a damp towel before placing in the fridge. Carrots: cut the tops off to keep them fresh longer. Place them in a closed container with plenty of moisture, either wrapped in a damp towel or dunk them in cold water every couple of days if they’re stored that long. Corn: leave un-husked in an open container if you must, but corn really is best eaten sooner for maximum flavor. Cucumber: wrapped in a moist towel in the fridge. If you’re planning on eating them within a day or two after buying them, they should be fine left out in a cool room. Garlic: store in a cool, dark, place. Herbs: a closed container in the fridge to be kept up to a week. Any longer might encourage mold. Lettuce: keep damp in an airtight container

in the fridge. Onion: store in a cool, dark and dry, place — good air circulation is best, so don’t stack them. Mushrooms: keep mushrooms in the refrigerator in its original wrapping. If you are using some of the mushrooms, try to open a corner of the plastic wrap and just take what you need. Then cover with a paper towel and cover with more plastic wrap and place back into the refrigerator. Peppers: sweet/ hot/ bell — Store in a plastic bag before placing in crisper or refrigerator. Green peppers stay fresh longer than orange or red peppers. Will last 1-2 weeks in refrigerator or up to ten months in the freezer. To freeze cut into slices and place on cookie sheet in the freezer until frozen, then place in air-tight container or freezer bag and return to freezer. Potatoes: (like garlic and onions) store in cool, dark and dry place, such as a box in a dark corner of the pantry; a paper bag also works well. Sweet potatoes: store in a cool, dark, well‐ ventilated place. Never refrigerate, sweet potatoes don’t like the cold. Tomatoes: never refrigerate. Depending on ripeness, tomatoes can stay for up to two weeks on the counter. To hasten ripeness, place in a paper bag with an apple.

you plan on eating them. Grapes: make sure to select clusters that are free from mold if you plan on keeping them in the fridge. Don’t wash before storing, the water will have a negative effect on the skins of the grapes; making them mushier and promoting bacterial growth in the process.

How to Store Fruit Apples: store on a cool counter or shelf for up to two weeks. For longer storage in a cardboard box in the fridge. Bananas: Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Keep them on the counter, or in a basket with holes or openings to allow air to circulate. Citrus: store in a cool place, with good airflow, never in an air‐tight container. Berries: don’t forget, they’re fragile. When storing stack in a single layer if possible. A paper bag works well, only wash before

Kiwi: store at room temperature until ripe; then in fridge. Do not refrigerate longer than 1- 2 weeks. Mangoes: store on the counter until ripe or 2-5 days, then move to refrigerator, then keep for 5-7 days. If you want to freeze, wash peel and slice into pieces. Place pieces on a cookie sheet until frozen then you can transfer to plastic bag. Melons: uncut in a cool dry place, out of the sun up to a couple weeks. Cut melons should be in the fridge in an open container. Pears: will keep for a few weeks on a cool counter, but fine in a paper bag. To hasten the ripening put an apple in with them. Strawberries: don’t like to be wet. Do best in a paper bag in the fridge for up to a week. Check the bag for moisture every other day.

New help for teachers Teachers learnt how to use a new programme to improve children’s thinking capacity in the classroom, at the Tzaneen Primary School. Teachers from various schools in Mopani participated in the programme , which aims to improve learning and teaching through the 3D virtual learning pilot study. Prof Denise Wood from the University of South Australia assisted the teachers with the new computer programme. In the photo on the right are (back) Prof Wood, Ms Alma Usiba (Local Area Network Technician at Sita in Polokwane) and Mr Obed Shikwambana (teacher at Yingisani Special School). In the front row are Ms Lindy Mkansi (teacher at Masungulo Primary School), Ms Kegaugetswe Florah Ndlovu (teacher at Nkowankowa Primary School) and Ms Eunice Mokgoloboto (teacher at Masungulo Primary School).

‘Let’s help health services in Mopani’ ANOVA hosted a symposium to strengthen the health system in the Mopani District. God’s Haven in Tzaneen received a welcome donation from the ATKV Eiland last week. The Eiland takes a collection at their church services on Sundays for God’s Haven and donates the money to them several times each year. Mr Bennie Steenkamp from ATKV Eiland handed over another cheque to Ms Elsa Schoeman recently. Next to them is Ms Hantie van Niekerk (resident) and Mr Reyno Wepener (Eiland). In front are Mr Dries Verster and Ms Laura Meyer (residents).

Numerous stakeholders in the health sector, ranging from the Department of Health, the Foundation for Professional Development, the Health System Trust, the National Health Laboratory Service and several others, attended the symposium at Karibu Lodge. ANOVA’s external liaison officer Siyani Marimba “we believe in capacity building and our presence today is to fulfil our objective, which is to fulfil capacity in Mopani”. Dr Khetisa Taole, a Director in the National Department of Health,

discussed the new ways to improve service delivery in the primary health sector. He also discussed a range of challenges facing the Department. He concluded by saying “we need qualified and professional nurses and more specialists, and we need a medical school in Limpopo to train these specialists”. In the photo on the left are Dr Gert Marincowitz (Family Physician at the Mopani District Health Department), Ms Siyani Marimba (ANOVA), Dr Taole, Dr Cephus Chikanda (Head of Health Systems at ANOVA) and Dr Madambi Shilumani (GM of HIV at the Limpopo Department of Health). — Tshegofatso Ngobeni tshego@bulletin.us.com

Veels geluk!

— Retha Nel; retha@bulletin.us.com

Vanjaar is dus geskiedenis gemaak of na baie jare herskryf, toe drie jong plaaslike mans as Limpopo se drie beste jongboere aangewys is.

kom later by hulle.

Sterkte! “An unfulfilled dream drains the colour from a man’s entire existence.”

More discipline woes for Dynamos During its meeting last Wednesday the disciplinary committee of the Premier Soccer League imposed heavy fines on a number of clubs, including Dynamos FC and the chairman of the club, Mr Pat Malabela. Dynamos, alias Ri khomeni ri nga peli, were charged with bringing the league into disrepute. The incident relating to the case took place on 10 April this year, when the chairman of the club, Mr Pat Malabela, made some remarks on air during a radio interview. Both Dynamos and Malabela were found guilty in absentia and were each ordered to pay a fine of R25 000. Mr Malabela was also

ordered to pay the costs of the hearing. Chippa United were charged with taking the field one minute late in their Absa Premiership fixture against University of Pretoria on 11 May 2013. Chippa United were given the option to pay an admission of guilt fine as the fixture was not broadcast live on television and they paid an amount of R5 700 as an admission of guilt. Ajax Cape Town were found guilty of failure to grant their opponents, Kaizer Chiefs, access to their change rooms at least four hours prior to kickoff at the Cape Town Stadium on 1 May 2013. Ajax Cape Town were fined an amount

R50 000, which was wholly suspended, on condition that they apologize to the opponents in writing within 30 days. They were also ordered to pay the costs of the hearing. Milano United were found guilty of failing to procure the requisite medical staff during their fixture against Vasco da Gama on 20 October 2012. They paid an admission-of-guilt fine of R5 700. Cape Town FC also failed to procure the requisite medical staff in their fixture against Blackburn Rovers. They also paid an admission-of-guilt fine of R5 700. — LiN News/Limpopo Mirror
