bars of die duiwel los raak!

Caring for orphaned baby vervets... The Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) in Letsitele recently had too few hands to help with the many orphaned baby vervet monkeys. Three volunteers had stomach problems and were therefore not allowed to handle the babies. In the first few weeks of life these little primates are very susceptible to human ailments. So I was roped in to help care for nine tiny babies over Christmas. It was an exhausting but very rewarding experience and an insight into the Foundation’s philosophy and never-ending work. The VMF directors, Mr Dave du Toit and his wife Josie, run the sanctuary on vegan lines. Volunteers, from all over the world, pay to come and look after and learn about vervet monkeys. The living is basic. There are wooden cabins with simple furniture and no electricity. There’s a communal washroom with, as Josie so sweetly describes the long drop, a few eco-toilets. There’s a separate communal area where volunteers can relax and cook and an openplan dining room area. The history of the VMF is written on the dining room columns and walls. The volunteers stay and help anything from a few weeks to a few months. Some are permanent staffers who have qualifications in biology, veterinary fields or conservation. There were four volunteers with the babies. The nursery is separate from all the other enclosures. My shift began after an early breakfast and lasted until 16:00 with a short break for lunch. The heat was oppressive but all attention was focused on the babies. As the babies are so delicate, volunteers are not permitted to wear any chemicals such as sunscreen, perfume, mosquito repellants or

any other kind of creams. Although so very cute, volunteers were instructed not to kiss the babies. Two of the primates had developed mouth thrush which can sometimes be attributed to human kissing.
Mango the cutest samango.
Each baby has its own small bottle and gets milk every 15 minutes. Each bottle contains 30 ml and has to be finished within four hours. Thereafter the milk goes off and the babies get ill. Some babies had diarrhea or other problems and had added nutrients in their milk. Each baby has a name. In fact all 500 odd vervets at the VMF have names. Amongst the babies was one very cute male samango monkey named Mango. Samangos are more intelligent than vervets and Mango really didn’t fancy playing much with the vervets. The babies also cry for their mothers. That’s where the volunteers wrap them in a blan-
ket, soothingly rub their bodies and noses and rock them to sleep. The babies nap and when awake are very active. They climb all over the volunteers, wee-ing and poo-ing. Fortunately their expulsions don’t smell and there’s toilet paper to clean up their messes. The VMF does not put the babies in nappies as this results in chaffing and sometimes bleeding. They cling to the volunteers’ hair and bodies. A volunteer goes to sickbay, up a little hill, and prepares more milk every four hours. There is drinking water as well as rehydration fluids and chopped up vegetables. Every time a baby drinks, eats, moves, sleeps, it’s noted. Deebo, a male, was found abandoned on a farm, severely dehydrated and malnourished. Despite all the care and medical attention Deebo passed away in Josie’s arms on New Year’s Day. It was a huge shock to all as the VMF is renowned for its orphan care and this is the first time an orphan has been lost on Josie’s watch. The next stage is drinking on their own from the bottle. Once that’s been mastered it’s off to another cage and each baby is allocated a foster mother. Vervet females will look after babies that are not their own. This introduction is also monitored with a volunteer seated outside the cage observing, making notes and seeing that the bottles are filled every four hours with milk and nutrients. These cages are adjacent to the actual sanctuary cages and the curious vervets come and touch the babies through the fence. Eventually the babies with their foster mothers are placed into one of the bigger enclosures. The integration is then complete. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

GLM hands over 7 open air gymnasiums Greater Letaba Municipality Mayor Godfrey Modjadji officially opened seven outdoor gymnasiums across the municipal district. The handover ceremony was held at Kgapane Stadium on 22 December. The GLM’s spokesperson, Ms Lovers Maenetje, said the gymnasiums costed the municipality R3,8 million and the gymnasiums were erected in Kgapane Stadium, Senwamokgope Stadium, Modjadjiskloof (Library), Koranta Village, Maphalle Village, Abel Village and at Sekgopo Community hall (Youth
Centre). “They are aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle for all community members living in the municipality’s area,” she said. “We want to give our community members an opportunity to live a healthy life and expand on their life span. “This is an opportunity for the municipal population to grow, because healthy people means a longer life span for our people and less people will die”, mayor Modjadji said. — Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com
The young lady who survived a shark attack this past festive season, is back home and recovering well. Tamsin Scott (23) from Letsitele, told Bulletin this week that she is feeling positive about her ordeal and that she has faith in her speedy recovery. “I still get sharp pains in my forearms, wrist and hands at times but it is not at all unbearable,” she said with a giggle. “Our surgeon did such an excellent job that I don’t think people will believe my story in the years to come, as I doubt I will have any scars as proof!” The Scott family arrived back home in Letsitele on Monday, after spending most of their December holiday at Mpande Bay on the KZN Wild Coast. Tamsin was in waist-deep water at a private beach when a Bullshark attacked her, severing the tendons and nerve endings in both her arms, rendering them almost entirely useless. She was eventually rushed to Millpark Hospital in Johannesburg, where she spent twelve days in high care and underwent four surgeries. Although not having the use of her hands has brought with it some challenges, Tamsin has adapted, improvised and overcome those obstacles like a champion. “There are a few things that we take for granted daily, such as sending text messages or making phone calls or even something seemingly insignificant such as scratching an
itch, which has suddenly become a challenge to her,” explained mom Tessa Scott. “But she is a feisty one and has refused to let that affect her ever positive and upbeat mood.” She has found ways to stay in
touch with friends over whatsapp by replacing text messages with voicenotes and has enabled the voice commands on her phone and tablet allowing for hands-free use. “I have also managed to handle cups and other objects with my arms and have found a straw to be a most useful tool.” In regards to the attack itself, Tamsin said she has no bad memories or
nightmares despite fearing that she would. “I thought that this would haunt me later, but I am not afraid to talk about it and although I do sometimes play the attack back in my mind, it has not affected me in the slightest — except for not really wanting to go back into the ocean anytime soon. “I think that it may have something to do with a very special talisman I received from a close family friend too.” A friend of her father had brought her a necklace with a dolphin charm as a gift from Mauritius which, according to legend, symbolises courage and strength after a traumatic event. “It is a very special gesture to me and I wear it every day as a reminder.” A final year student at the University of Stellenbosch where she is completing her B Com Accounting degree, Tamsin will have to make arrangements with the university to continue studying via correspondence, until she has completely healed. She will be travelling there this month to do so. “My friends and family have all been very supportive which has helped to keep me upbeat — and I would like to thank the community for the tremendous response and the many positive messages and prayers I received. It is a heart warming experience.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Fannie Masemola, congratulated the police on these arrests and warned criminals that police operations would intensify into the New Year. “We will not allow Limpopo to become a breeding ground for criminals from other areas who think they can destabilize the peace and stability in the province,” said Masemola. He urged communities to remain vigilant and not become careless. “We can never be too careful and too prepared and by working with the police and CPFs in our communities we can ensure a safe and enjoyable period for all,” he said.

Beurtwater moet boere nou deurtrek
—Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
— Louis Roux: louis@bulletin.us.com — Joe Dreyer: joe@bulletin.us.com
Dam levels of great concern Tzaneen Dam’s water level continues to drop as the SA Weather Service anticipates the first rainfall to come only in March. Currently the level is down to 39,9% which is 54% lower than the at the end of last year, when the level was reported to be at 78,3%. “I wish we could make it rain, but the reality is that nobody can and so the best we can do from the department’s side, is to continue working with local municipalities and stand at the ready to counter emergency situations if or when they arise,” said Mr Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation. “The Mopani District is one of the more negatively affected areas, especially in Limpopo. If good rain comes late, and if the rain is not sufficient — and I am not even sure at this stage exactly what sufficient would mean in our current dire situation — it will not really create much
run off to create sufficient water in boreholes, dams and so on. There will not be enough surface water to build up the water levels.” It is not just Tzaneen Dam that is feeling the brunt of the drought, Ebenezer has dropped from 95,5% in 2015 to just under 78%. Dap Naude dropped from 89,6% to 80%. “Our only solace will be rain before winter. The municipalities will inform us of potential emergency situations which will then in turn determine the type of action we would take as a counter measure. The very best we can do is to assist with the supply of water for consumption to affected areas through the use of water tankers,” added Ratau. “We all need to pray for rain. And pray that our prayers are heard.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Boston offers a second chance for the failures Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga released the 2015 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examination results on Tuesday, confirming a drop in the overall pass rate compared to last year. Thousands of pupils have been left disappointed and facing limited options for the New Year. Providing these students with a second chance, Boston City Campus & Business College offers the American Council on Education’s GED® Program, which has been recognised by SAQA as being comparable to a SA National Senior Certificate (NSC). Pupils who have failed their matric, or pupils who did not achieve the necessary results required for acceptance into tertiary studies, have the opportunity of
a second chance. With an 83% pass rate in 2015, Boston GED® students have excelled on the program, with many progressing onto further studies at universities and colleges. One such success is Matthew Strydom, the 2015 top achieving national GED® student. Embracing his second chance, Matthew achieved a distinction in his GED® and has since been accepted to study for a B Com degree in 2016, which would not have previously been possible. Offered with a full-time, part-time or distance option, the success of the Boston GED® program is the pro-active and dedicated tutors and mentors that assist pupils with their academic studies, as well as keeping people on track with
their studies. Pupils who have previously struggled through school are now being given the opportunity to achieve their Grade 12 equivalency and not just become another statistic, but rather a success story. • For more information about the Boston GED®, call 081 409 2841 or send an e-mail to gedinfo@boston.co.za. The Boston GED® program is offered at 44 Boston Campuses nationally. The program consists of five subjects; English Reading, English Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Students need to complete and pass all five of the external examinations to achieve their GED®. For more information, contact Eddie Oosthuizen on 061 467 2184.

President Zuma calls for support for the matriculants President Jacob Zuma has called on families, neighbours, government and communities to support all the matrics who sat for the examinations, particularly those who failed the examinations. “Support those who failed; they must never think this is the end of the road because it isn’t. I want to encourage them to explore the many opportunities provided which include rewriting at various rewriting centres across the country, as well as joining the vocational training route, thereby add-
ing to much needed technical skills,” he said. He also urged all schools, supported by the Department of Basic Education, to assist young people in securing opportunities to build their lives and to assure them that failure does not mean there is no future — but instead they should be encouraged to use the temporary setback to open up more doors for their personal development. Help is available for pupils at the Basic Education toll-free number 0800 202 933.
• Vir verdere navrae oor die inligting in hierdie mediaverklaring, skakel mnr Paul Colditz (uitvoerende hoof: Fedsas) by 082 414 5359 of Dr Jaco Deacon (adjunkhoof: Fedsas) by 083 795 2928.
New colleges to be built across SA The Government has begun a process of establishing fifteen new Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in the country. Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande announced on 29 December at Nkandla that a TVET College was to be built in that area. Other colleges will be built in the Eastern Cape (4), KwaZulu-Natal (8: one with two campuses), Limpopo (2: in Giyani and Thabazimbi) and Mpumalanga (1).

There are always options, even after bad results
The most important thing to realise at this stage — even though it may be tough to stand up and face these choices — is that bad results are not the end of the road, and that there are still many options to get back on track. Below par matric results do not mean you have to give up on your dreams and aspirations. In fact, if handled maturely and pragmatically, a disappointing performance could be just the catalyst needed to propel a person in a new and better direction, with more determination and resolve than before. As the saying goes, one should never let a good crisis go to waste. Coughlan says parents, guardians and other caregivers should ensure they positively support learners during this difficult time as they may be facing a number of concerns, such as not being able to get into the higher education institution they expected, having to choose a different course, having to write supplementary exams, or even having to repeat the year. Many also have the emotional struggle with having
disappointed themselves and others. There are still many options available, but it is imperative that proper research into all these options be conducted. These include options in the public and private sector, different degrees or diplomas, a higher certificate instead of a degree as a stepping stone, volunteer work opportunities or part-time study, second semester registrations, supplementary exams or redoing the school year in a more supportive environment. First, adults should assist disappointed learners to get the poor results into perspective. This is often best done by plotting all the options that are still available and weighing them up against each other. It is easier to feel better in the face of real choices than to be told to feel better without any sense of options. Facts help to reintroduce a sense of control over one’s fate and the path is then cleared for choosing the best possible way forward. Options include: Writing supplementary exams: Not everyone will qualify for supplementary exams, but if they do, they should definitely register and do their very best to pass. Check with your school whether you qualify, and then go all out these next few weeks in ensuring that you spend as much time as possible behind your books. Repeating the year: Having another go at matric is not a happy prospect for anyone who has just been through the mill, but it could be an exciting second chance if you go about it differently this time round. For instance you might choose to do some part-time work while being enrolled in a distance learning course, or you could choose to attend a different institution that specialises in rewriting. Many will even allow you to change your subjects. Enrolling at a different higher education institution: South Africa has only one quality assurance system, which means that private institutions and public universities are subjected to the same registration and accreditation checks and balanc-

es. So if your marks mean that you pass but are not able to go to your institution of first choice, have a look around. There are some fantastic and often more work-oriented options available out there that you might not even have considered. Choosing a different course: Perhaps a higher certificate is the stepping stone you need to be accepted into the course of your choice. Or perhaps there is a completely different direction which you can tackle, one that you were not aware of before. Again, do your research and do it thoroughly. Speak to the people in the industry you want to enter, and have a look around to see which institutions produce industry leaders. Today there are courses that did not even exist two years ago. Are you aware of these? If not, you have some pleasantly surprising research to do. Electing to keep going even if things are not yet clear: Another cliché which continues to exist because it is true, is that it does not matter how many times you fall — it matters only how many times you stand up. This is painful and disappointing, but it is only a catastrophe if you don’t stand up and face it. This can be no more than a temporary setback and can in fact be a character and strength-building exercise. Do not let the year go to waste. If fulltime study or a return to school feels like too much of an ask or you do not have the funds to do this, then at least enrol for a short course which can keep you growing and in the habit of learning. Sometimes all that is needed is one or two small successes to realise that you are more than capable. Everyone fails sometimes. Successful people learn from their failures. • The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) is the largest, most accredited registered private higher education institute in South Africa. It has a history in education and training since 1909, and its brands — Rosebank College, Varsity College, Design School Southern Africa (DSSA) and Vega — are widely recognised and respected for producing workplace-ready graduates, many of whom become industry-leaders in their chosen fields. The IIE offers a wide range of qualifications, from post-graduate degrees to short courses, on twenty registered higher education campuses across South Africa.

Many thousands of Grade 12 pupils now have to face the reality that things have not worked out the way they wanted them to in terms of their results — and with this disappointment will come the uncertainty of how to proceed in 2016. According to education expert Dr Felicity Coughlan, director of the IndependDr Coughlan ent Institute of Education (SA’s largest private higher education institute), the most important thing to realise is that bad results are not the end of the road and there are still many options to get back on track. Request for suppliers to be registered in the municipal database
GREATER LETABA MUNICIPALITY The Greater Letaba Municipality invites prospective service providers to be added in one or a maximum of three of the supplier categories below. In order to comply with the procedures set out in Clauses 37 to 40 of the Supply Chain Management Policy; Regulation 14 of SCM Regulations and the Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (Act 56 of 2003) (MFMA), the municipality developed a supplier database to be used by the Supply Chain Management office. The purpose of this database is to give all prospective suppliers an equal opportunity to submit quotations to the Greater Letaba Municipality. Preference will be given to registered suppliers, but it does not necessarily follow that suppliers who are not yet registered will be totally exempted from quoting for the supplying of goods or services to the Greater Letaba Municipality. It is envisaged however, that this database will contribute to efficient administration and compliance with the MFMA.

Oppie Kassie On the Telly Rugby in Japan is ná die onlangse Wêreldbekertoernooi skielik iets wat in Suid-Afrika aandag trek.

The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
