Local models up for fame In true Barwise fashion, Tzaneen was once again served a delicious dose of eye candy at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre this past weekend. With a long standing tradition as the favoured pool from which scouts draw local talent, a few of the models on show this weekend were rumoured to be heading onward to stardom in the near future. One such starlet to keep an eye on is 16-year old Natasha Bischof, the current Top Model Polokwane 2016 title holder. Another rising star who adorned the catwalk this weekend was Miss Tzaneen Lifestyle 2016 winner, Sumari Erasmus. The two beauties along with fellow models from the prestigious Limpopo Beauty Modelling Academy under guidance of Katryn Barwise, presented some of the local designers’

show stopper dresses. Available at their Tzaneen-based boutiques, these designer gowns are certain to make your wedding or matric farewell, an unforgettable experience. The event was well attended by soon-to-be married couples shopping around for dresses, décor and venues for their big day. A stroll through the arcade at Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre provided visitors with a buyer’s eye view of all that the region has to offer as exhibitors from all across the area displayed their finest products. There was a lot of excitement among audience members as one by one the ladies showed off the

finest dresses fit for brides or bridesmaids, or those simply wanting to exit their high school career with a bang. — Joe Dreyer

Miskien!

Mzokof gaan V.I. Vergesog? Dis dalk die enigste manier om van die ou donner ontslae te raak, sewe-komma-agt-miljoen-van ons-swaarverdiende-belastinggeld-later! Mzok!

How small businesses can survive (and thrive in tough economic times) The ailing SA economy, exasperated by rising government debt and the weakening rand, poses a unique set of challenges for small and upcoming businesses. We have also seen in the last few years the number of South Africans interested in starting a business has halved since 2010. However, trying economic conditions don’t necessarily mean a death sentence for smaller companies. This is according to Mr Gerrie van Biljon, Executive Director at Business Partners Limited (Business/Partners) who says that by employing simple strategies, such as better expense and cash flow management, customer centricity and the streamlining of processes, not only can smaller businesses survive during these tough economic times, but they can thrive. Many measures “Having recently revised its GDP down to 0,4% from 0,6% for Quarter 4 of 2015, economic growth in South Africa has slowed down, and the inflation rate and unemployment figures remain ominously high. While this kind of economic climate is challenging for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), there are many measures that entrepreneurs can implement in order to survive these tough times,” he says. Van Biljon says that small businesses should review all of their processes and operations to ensure that they are achieving maximum efficiency. While expense management is essential for survival, he does warn that aggressive cuts can be dangerous for an SME. “Entrepreneurs need to look at the situation strategically and, rather than just cut expenses, ask themselves how the process by which their service or product is produced can be streamlined. The last thing a growing busi-

ness should consider doing is shirking on quality, which links directly to customer satisfaction. Marketing “In the early stages of any business, marketing is of utmost importance to get business. As small businesses might not have large marketing budgets, word-of-mouth advertising plays a large role in marketing a business. It is therefore essential to offer a high level of service to all customers as there may not be a second chance. Besides, when you delight your customers during tough times, they’re yours for life!” says Van Biljon. Another point that he brings home is the importance of a constant positive cash flow in any new or growing business. “Cash flow is essential because, simply put, you can’t spend money you don’t have and a certain degree of liquidity is essential to continue standard business operations. It is the lifeblood of every business, without it the business is dead. In an SME environment, this may require negotiations for some breathing room from suppliers by extending payment to two or three months if possible. Don’t finance customers “Alternatively, customers could be persuaded to pay a little earlier, even if this entails offering a slight discount or special offer. “At the best of times, it is unwise for an SME to sell its goods on credit if it cannot afford to do so. The majority of smaller businesses can’t afford to finance their customers due to a lack of funding. Offering credit adds to the risk profile of the business. It loads an administration burden that costs money and

there is always the possibility of bad debts. Small business owners should seriously consider whether to offer credit and not merely offer terms to get the business.” The BIG ones Van Biljon’s closing piece of advice, looking for the silver lining, is that a business should never waste an economic downturn as many great multinationals were started during recession periods, including Microsoft, General Electric, Revlon Cosmetics, Burger King and IBM to name a few. “These hard-hitting times give entrepreneurs a reason to relook at their business model and find out where there is wastage. This is also the perfect time to identify newfound gaps in their areas of expertise, turning tough times into an opportunity”. Traffic officers back in court Two Limpopo provincial traffic officers who are out on bail of R1 000 each on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm appeared again in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court. Robert Mangalana (51) and Clifford Lubisi (45) are attached to the Tzaneen Traffic Station and they were arrested at a gun shop where it was alleged that they went to buy ammunition for the

firearm in August last year. Preliminary investigations that were conducted revealed that Malangana inherited the firearm from his father but failed to apply for a license to possess it. The case has now been moved to the Tzaneen Regional Court and will be heard again on 7 July. — Gittel Baloyi gittel@bulletin.us.com

Lion poachers appear in court Three suspected white lion poachers appeared briefly in the Namakgale Magistrate’s court on Tuesday on charges of illegal possession of an endangered species. The case was transferred to Tzaneen and the three will remain in custody. This followed their arrest last week, by members of the Rhino Project who were patrolling along the R71 in that area. Upon

searching their vehicle, Rhino Project members found a black bag containing the head, tail and four paws of a white lion. The three suspects are Peter Nathi (41), Alone Mapfumari (41) and Phenius Mngomezulu (34). They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 29 June. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Jare gelede het daar in ‘n dagblad ‘n strokiesprent verskyn met die titel: “For Better or for Worse”. Dit is later in ‘n Afrikaanse koerant gepubliseer as: “Vir Botter of vir Wors”.

The u.11 rugby team of Dr Annecke Primary School in Letsitele outperfomed every other team in their league during this year’s rugby season, and the team is the 2016 Limpopo champs. They also won the champiosnhip last year. Not bad for a (relatively) small school in a rural area! The “Plaasjapies” showed the “Dorpsjapies” how to play the game in true style. Well done boys!

Lim doctors are not happy The Board of the SA Medical Association (SAMA) would like to thank all members in Limpopo for their courage in high-lighting the very difficult working conditions under which they are expected to work by the health department in the province, and how these conditions have impacted negatively on service delivery to patients. They would also like to register their extreme disappointment at how the leadership of the province responded to the appeals from their members for the department’s intervention to address the problems they highlighted. These critical issues include: • Severe deficiencies in equipment and medical consumables, • Numerous vacant and frozen posts at clinical and administrative levels, with many individuals at key provincial health administrative levels being kept in acting positions, • Dysfunctional or non-implementation of salary progression and EPMDS, • Dysfunctional management of overtime and

RWOPS that impedes service delivery, and, • Challenges to professional development that result in doctors being forced to further their careers elsewhere. It is of serious concern that a number of provincial hospitals remain critically understaffed and that there is an ongoing exodus of generalist and specialist doctors from these institutions. In some cases this exodus is leaving the provincial health service with little or no capacity to provide important services within the province, and requires patients to be treated by other provinces, if at all. “SAMA will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the issues raised by our members are addressed. “The Chairman of the SAMA Board and National Council, together with the Chairperson of the Employed Doctor’s Committee, have engaged the leadership of the Limpopo Branch of SAMA, and the provincial Department of Health in Limpopo, to address the concerns of our members. A joint meeting of the National Leadership of SAMA, representatives of the Limpopo

Branch of SAMA, and the provincial DoH, has been arranged to seek a resolution to the problems that exist with the department and various health institutions in Limpopo. “It is our view that the challenges in Limpopo are a microcosm of the general malaise in our public health facilities nation-wide. It is important, therefore, that we make a success of the current engagement with a view of replicating those successes nationally,” SAMA said in a statement. SAMA reiterates its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by their employed members, both within and outside of the public service, and assures these members that the issues they raised are being addressed as a matter of urgency. As a responsible representative body, SAMA calls on its members to continue raising issues that impact on their ability to perform vital duties through the relevant SAMA structures to ensure co-ordinated national and provincial action, and to avoid activities that may compromise their professional and employment statuses.

Prison for two Sasol assailants The two men accused of beating up Mr Joseph Monyela, a petrol attendant at the R71 Sasol filling station in Tzaneen, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to time behind bars in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Hermanus van Dyk (36) and Danie le Roux (27) appeared in court on charges of assault and crimen injuria after their unprovoked attack on Monyela. Their appearance in court was ex-

pected to be a postponement as it would only be there second appearance but, in a surprise development both men pleaded guilty. Magistrate Helen Mkansi sentenced Van Dyk to two years in prison without a fine for assault GBH and crimen injuria, and Le Roux to eighteen months behind bars for assault GBH without a fine. The attack, which occurred two weeks ago, was caught on CCTV footage and was quickly circulated

across social media platforms, which sparked instant uproar from the community who believed the assault to have been racially motivated. This, in turn, provoked a response by trade union COSATU who was granted permission to stage a march in Tzaneen against racism. The Tzaneen community panicked and soon warnings of impending violent protests and possible looting were circulated. Business owners in the centre of

town closed shop for the day and schools were warned to keep children safe. Despite COSATU refuting claims of a violent protest action, many still cried wolf. Monday morning came and a peaceful anti-racism march from the GTM down through the centre of town was conducted in a very orderly fashion. The few hundred strong group of activists made their way to the Magistrate’s Court building, singing struggle songs and brandishing placards reading #racismmustfall and “only laundry should be separated by colour”. Not one building was damaged nor one business looted as the warnings preached a week before. Outside the court building, the members congregated opposite a larger group of EFF supporters and patiently awaited the outcome

of the accused court appearance. “Racism has no place in our country and certainly not in the town of Tzaneen,” said Mr Gerald Mkhomazi Twala, COSATU’s Provincial Secretary. “Sure, this last incident is an isolated one, but the problem runs deep in our community and affects both black and white members of society. There is not one person that can say all white people are racist, or all black people are racist and therefore this march is not aimed at any one demographic in particular.” — Joe Dreyer

Photographer takes ikasi to Innibos Bulletin’s photojournalist, Joe Dreyer, was invited to exhibit some of his photographic works at the Innibos Arts Festival this week in Mbombela. It is the second consecutive year that he will be exhibiting, upon invitation from Pretoria-based art curator, John-Anthony Boerma of Artscape, at the biggest festival in the country. Last year, along with his Innibos exhibition, Joe worked on a project entitled “This woman’s work” for the Grahamstown Arts Festival. The exhibit was purchased by the Depart-

Opedag by die Vossies Wat sal boeresport nou sonder toutrek wees!

Stanford Lake College recently hosted the opening of their new state-of-the-art High Performance Centre. The event welcomed around 200 guests, eager to have a look around this much awaited facility. Mr Lebogang Montjane, the Executive Director of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA), who was the guest of honour for the afternoon, and the Headmaster, Mr Craig Carolan, officially opened the HPC with a small ceremony. The HPC is a multipurpose sports facility built to provide the pupils and the community with access to top class sports training facilities.

While the full potential of the HPC will only be realised in the years to come, the senior management team identified three specific activities on which they will focus for the first few months: squash, swimming and the gym. The aim is to provide high quality training to Stanford pupils in these three areas before expanding the field of sporting activities. While Stanford Lake College pupils will always remain the main focus, the HPC is, of course, open to the general public. Member-

A number of hockey players of Stanford Lake College in Magoebaskloof earned provincial colours. The school’s hockey players enjoyed an excellent season. Herewith are the girls who now proudly wear Limpopo colours:

Drie Vossies vir Lim-span… Drie

Khanyisa is tans in haar tweede jaar by Kovsies, waar sy vir ‘n B Sc-graad studeer.

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” — Confucius
