This year’s Letaba Show oﬀered a lot to excite the children and it was obvious that they enjoyed a whale of a time riding on the merry-goround’s swings, the octopus and other features. It was, however, the helicopter rides that really ensured unforgettable moments for the lucky ones who could aﬀord it. The number of visitors on Thursday and Friday matched last year’s totals, but Saturday was not good, as a result of some scaremongering by a group calling themselves Boko-Haram and operating from the Nkowankowa area.

The project to raise the wall spillway of the Tzaneen Dam will move into the implementation phase on Monday. The Department of Water and Sanitation announced that the cautious demolitions on the wall spillway are expected to begin in the last week of August, but the contractor will begin site establishment on Monday (15 August). The demolitions will not involve any blasting, but jackhammers and peckers will instead be used. Noise and dust impacts are expected to be the main impact during this phase, lasting five months. The contractor will endeavour to minimize these impacts as per the EMP.

Patience regarding this matter is asked, and any complaints can be lodged at the site office complaints register or by emailing the contacts below. An online portal will also be established where complaints can be lodged. Daily works will commence at 07:00 and stop at 17:00 from Monday to Saturday; and no site work will be done on Sundays and public holidays. The demolitions are expected to be completed in the last week of January 2017. Access through the residential route will be kept to a minimum; and plant and other heavy vehicles will use alternate back routes to access the site.

Project Moving Forward handed over In a combined effort, the Tzaneen Circuit Office of the Department of Education, Westfalia and Merensky High School joined hands to improve the dire situation at the Tsaneng Combined School. This school is situated on the Westfalia Farm outside Politsi. Extensive work was done on the buildings as well as the grounds to enable learners to experience a healthy environment, conducive to learning. The project, entitled “MovKgothatso Morwane, the headgirl of Tzaneng Combined School

ing Forward”, was handed over to the school management by Messrs Felix Nomvela, Tzaneen Circuit Manager, Magnus Steyn, Headmaster of Merensky High School and Kelvin Fowler of Westfalia Fruit. During the handover, there was a tree planting ceremony during which pupils from Grades 8 to 12 were instructed to plant a tree resembling their commitment to growth and teamwork towards a brighter future. Each grade was made responsible for

the wellbeing of its designated tree which would serve as a reminder of how far they came in the near future. An opportunity still exists for other interested parties to join in this exciting venture, as several needs still have to be met to complete the upgrade. Dilapidated bridge will now be assessed (at last) The Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) will send an inspector to assess the delapidated bridge over the Letaba River on the Nkowankowa-Tarentaalrand road next week. This was confirmed

by RAL’s spokesperson, Mr Maropeng Manyathela. He added that they will also verify that the bridge is indeed on a provincial road. A concerned taxi operator, Mr Amos

Makhubele, said he was impressed by the news, because a proper assessment of the life-threatening situation is long overdue. “Finally I see a light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to Bulletin for making our concerns to be heard,” Makhubele said. Stepfather arrested for rape A 44 year-old stepfather was arrested at the Tzaneen taxi rank this weekend on charges of rape and resisting arrest. The Tzaneen Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences unit (FCS) arrested the man after investigating information which alleged that he had been sexually assaulting his two stepdaughters aged 8 and 11 respectively. It is alleged that he has been raping the girls since the start of April this year. Police reports state that the man would rape each of the girls every afternoon when they came home from school, while

their mother was at work, and would threaten them with death should they tell anyone. The events unfolded at their family home in Maake. When the suspect was cornered at the Tzaneen taxi rank by SAPS officers who acted on a tip off, he resisted arrest, but was eventually taken into custody. He appeared in the Lenyenye Magistrate’s court on Monday. The case was postponed and the investigation continues. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Go-slow action continues at GTM after 4 months As the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s Electro-technical department go-slow action entered month four, workers’ tolerance with the GTM is wearing thin. On 18 April workers embarked on a goslow for better working conditions and protective clothing and uniforms. Since then they vowed to continue with their strike action until the town management addresses their grievances. The workers accuse the GTM of wasting money by paying contractors while some of its employees are earning salaries for doing nothing. They also accused the municipal-

Dit verg van ‘n mens om hard te dink oor of daar ‘n groter sondebok (die een wat vir alles die skuld kry) in die samelewing is, as die media (veral die gedrukte media). Dat die media soms wel sondig (en dan die sondaar[s] is), is natuurlik waar; maar dit is nie naastenby so dikwels as wat voorgegee word nie. Ons voorbladberig van verlede Vrydag oor broeiende onmin in agri-geledere het wyd opslae gemaak en daarmee saam is ons beskuldig van dinge wat nie gesê is nie. Dikwels is dit juis belangrik dat die leser moet nadink oor wat nie gesê is nie. Lesers struikel natuurlik ook dikwels deur dinge in beriggewing in te lees, gewoon omdat die mens se subjektiewe onderbewussyn jou tot gevolgtrekkings laat kom (wat meesal foutief is). Terug na die gewraakte berig: Daar is nêrens gesê dat AgriLetaba of AgriLimpopo oorweeg om van AgriSA weg te breek nie. Die woord wegbreek mag effe gelaai wees, maar gelaai of te not, dit is nie deur ons op iemand se brood gesmeer nie. Die res van die berig berus hoofsaaklik op feite, onder meer uit mediaverklarings van AgriSA en substrukture, of uit toesprake/uitsprake van senior agri-leiers. Omdat ons ‘n plaaslike koerant is, word nie verwag dat ons oor nasionale sake berig nie; en as ons dit doen, word die denkfout begaan om te aanvaar dat ons bronne tot die plaaslike omgewing beperk is. Ons begaan ook foute, ja, maar ons suig nie goed uit die duim nie. Twee van ons joernaliste het saam so 96 jaar ervaring in die joernalistiek en ‘n baie wye “voorraad” kontakte. Ons het nie nodig om nuus te wil “vervaardig” nie. Ons erken die lewensnoodsaaklike rol van ons boere vir voedselsekerheid en het empatie met hulle in hul stryd en onsekerheid oor more. Vandag se plaaslike helde is ons onderwysers. Elders word berig oor ‘n groep onderwysers van ‘n plaaslike skool wat vereer is vir hul puik werk. Hulle is nie die enigste uit ons omgewing nie (ander is reeds vroeër vermeld) en daarom word hulde vandag aan ons omgewing se onderwyserskorps gebring.

Soenvissies

In die Bulletin van 13 Augustus 2004 was die groot uitbreiding van die winkelkompleks bekend as Tzaneen Crossing die hoofnuus. Wyle mnr Jan Ferreira, ‘n bekende entrepreneur van Tzaneen, het ‘n deel van die ontwikkeling (wat sy eiendom was) gedoen, en die uitbreiding van die ou Sanlam-sentrum is deur Resilient gedoen. Dit het verskuiwings van onder meer die taxi-terminus en informele handelaars behels en is destyds deur die GTM aangebied as ‘n opruiming van die sakekern (waarvan dadels gekom het!).

In die tropiese waters van die wêreld woon daar ‘n klein vissie wat as die soenvissie (kissing gourami) bekend staan. Die vissie is sowat 5 tot 8 sentimeter lank en kom in verskeie helder kleure voor en is ‘n vreugde om te aanskou. Die fassinerendste van die vissie is hulle soenery. Dit is niks snaaks om twee van hierdie vissies met hul lippe teen mekaar gedruk en hulle vinne wild aan die klap te sien nie. Hulle skep die indruk van ‘n ernstige onderwater romanse. ‘n Uitbeelding van innige see-liefde. Maar moenie dat dit jou bedrieg nie. Wat lyk soos ‘n romantiese afspraak, is eintlik onderwaterse krygskuns. Hulle soen glad nie, dit is hulle manier van veg. Hulle stamp mekaar met hul lippe. Stoot met die bek. Liplemme. Letterlik slaan hulle met die kakebeen. Agressie met die bek en tong. Mond-tot-mond manipulasie. Hierdie mondstampery is nie tot hul tropiese waters beperk nie. Kyk goed na die mense om jou wêreld en selfs in die spieël. Jy sal verbaas wees hoe viswyfagtig dinge kan raak. Soenvissies is nie die eerste gediertes wat hul mond gebruik om ander aan te val nie. In die ou dae is onderonsies vinnig met die vuiste afgehandel; deesdae gebruik ons ‘n meer gesofistikeerde stuk gereedskap: die mond. Met woorde soos: “Sjoe, maar jy het lekker vet geword” of “daai bles van jou is al groter as jou gesig” word mense seer gestamp. En as iemand teenoor wie dit gesê word, terugstamp, dan sê ons: “Aag toe nou, dit is net ‘n grappie” of ‘n sogenaamde “soentjie”. Laat iemand dit waag om dit vir ons te sê, dan begin die mond-tot-mond manipulasie. ‘n Paar Bybelse gedagtes om oor na te dink: “Sit ‘n wag voor jou mond en hou wag oor wat jy sê” (Psalm 141:3). “As iemand dink hy is godsdienstig, maar hy hou nie sy tong in toom nie, bedrieg hy homself. Sy godsdiens is waardeloos” (Jakobus 1:26). “As jy die lewe liefhet moet jy jou tong weerhou van kwaadpraat en jou lippe van leuens” (1 Petrus 3:10).

Waardegedrewe skole-projek skop af Meer as 550 onderwysers en ouers in Mpumalanga het die eerste opskerpsessies van die Federasie van Beheerliggame van Suid-Afrikaanse Skole (FEDSAS) se unieke Waardegedrewe Skole-projek bygewoon. Die projek is in 2013 bekend gestel en stel ’n waardegedrewe benadering eerder as ’n reëlgebaseerde benadering tot skooldissipline voor. “Ons is verstom oor die belangstelling in die projek. Die sessies is oop vir almal, ongeag of ’n skool lid is van Fedsas of nie, en dit lyk asof onderwysers én ouers spring vir dié geleentheid,” sê Dr Jaco Deacon, adjunkhoof van Fedsas. Sedert die aanvanklike implementering van die projek drie jaar gelede het talle skole reeds aangedui dat hulle beduidend minder dissiplinêre probleme ondervind. “Met swak dissipline wat so ’n groot uit-

daging vir onderwys in SA bly, is die unieke benadering van die Waardegedrewe Skole-projek ’n reddingsboei vir skole. Die klemverskuiwing van reëls na waardes bring mee dat leerlinge, onderwysers en ander rolspelers in die skoolgemeenskap meer verantwoordelikheid neem vir hul gedrag,” sê Deacon. Vanjaar se opskerpsessies is ’n voortsetting van die aanvanklike projek. Belangstellendes wat nie die oorspronklike sessies bygewoon het nie, is welkom om die nuwe sessies by te woon. “Diegene wat belang stel, kan eers na die oorspronklike sessies op Fedsas se YouTube-kanaal gaan kyk. Dit is egter nie ’n voorvereiste nie,” verduidelik Deacon. Die projek duur tot Oktober vanjaar en elke provinsie bied twee afsonderlike opskerpsessies aan. So ’n sessie bestaan uit

twee dele: Die middagsessie vir onderwysers, “Leef jy of oorleef jy?”, bied die nodige inspirasie om ’n verskil te maak. Die aandsessie vir ouers, “Verstaan jou kind en jou kind se behoeftes”, fokus spesifiek op dissipline by die huis en verhoudinge wat ’n verskil maak. Die aanbieder is die bekende spreker en skrywer Johan Smith. Belangstellende skole kan hul Fedsasprovinsiale bestuurder vir besonderhede oor seminare in die onderskeie provinsies kontak. Kontakbesonderhede vir elke provinsie is beskikbaar op Fedsas se webtuiste by www.fedsas.org.za. FEDSAS is ’n vrywillige vereniging van skoolbeheerrade van openbare skole en staan die behoud en bevordering van gehalte-onderwys in dié skole voor. Die Laerskool Tzaneen se Bybel-vasvraspan het uitstekend in die jaarlikse Super 12 Bybel-vasvrakompetisie gevaar en vierde met 91% geëindig. Die lede van die span was Eben Fouché, Linke Bredenkamp, Heidi Katzké en Janke Joubert. Die Laerskool Randhart was eerste met 94%, Elarduspark was tweede met 92,5% en Hennopspark derde met 92%. Dit was dus net-net dat Tzaneen se kenners nie op die podium gestaan het nie. Die Larrie-span bedank mee Annarien Jacobs en Erika Fouché, wat hul so mooi gehelp het om voor te berei, asook mnr Rijnen en al die onderwysers vir hul geduld, ondersteuning en begrip. Journey to the Prince Edward Islands. The Tzaneen Eco Club invites you to travel with us to the Prince Edward Islands. Few people know where these islands are, fewer still realise that these two volcanic specks in the vast Southern Ocean comprise SA’s only overseas territory and are the only part of the Republic zoned as “Special Nature Reserve” — the highest conservation status under SA law. Ecologist Wiam Haddad will introduce us to the amazing ark of creatures that call these windblown mountaintops in the ocean their home. From the majestic wandering albatross, to the enormous elephants seal, to awesome orcas and even an endemic flightless moth! We will look at the diverse habitats, from polar desert to mucky mire; and the host of pioneering plants that carve out a living there. We will look at the tough history of human occupation on the islands and how it came to be SA territory. Lastly, Wiam will reflect on his own time spent on an unlikely paradise and ponder the future of this anachronistic gem. Wiam holds a BSc Plant Science degree from Tuks. Any opportunity to see diﬀerent parts of the world catches his attention and after completing his Honours course in Plant Ecology, he applied for a 13-month position as field biologist in the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme. Upon return he continued studying, this time towards an MSc investigating the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Koedoes Rriver catchment in Limpopo. After completing this degree in 2015, he took a position as Ecologist with ZZ2. The talk will be held at 18:30 at the Macadamia Community Hall. Eiland bowls too strong for DWK

Drie tennisspelers van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster, Christene Kruger, Nicole Fourie en Christelle Smit, het aan ‘n interprovinsiale tennistoernooi in Johannesburg deelgeneem. Hulle het in hul onderskeie spanne Limpopo verteenwoordig. Hier is Christene in aksie met ‘n afslaan.

Vossies vierde in Noordvaal Drie van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se meisieshokkiespanne het na die Noordvaal-kampioenskappe deurgedring. Die o.16A’s het tot die halfeindronde deurgedring en die o.14A’s en die eerste span het in die kwarteindronde gespeel. Die o.16A-span was in die sterkste afdeling ingedeel, waar hulle teen die ander provinsies se ligawenners moes speel. In hul eerste wedstryd teen die Hoër Volkskool was die telling gelykop met een doel elk. Teen die Hoërskool Kriel, het BV danksy goeie samespel 3-0 gewen. Hierna het BV vir die eerste keer vanjaar teen die Limpopo-ligawen-

ners, die Hoërskool Ben Viljoen, gespeel en uitstekend gevaar om die stryd gelykop met een doel elk te eindig. So het die Vossies bo in hul poel geëindig en moes hulle teen die wenner van die C-afdeling, die Hoërskool Sweizer-Reneke, uitspeel. Dié wedstryd het geëindig met die “8 seconds shootout” en elke span het vier doele aangeteken. Die wedstryd het toe oorgegaan na “sudden death”. BV het met 7-6 gewen en na die halfeindstryd gevorder. In hul halfeindwedstryd teen die Hoërskool Klerksdorp is drie spanlede so erg beseer dat hulle nie verder kon speel nie. Die Vossies het die wedstryd met 0-2 verloor.

Duiwelskloof Bowls Club hosted the Annual Eiland Home Day Trips Tournament and the event attracted a total of nine teams from Eiland. Representing Duiwelskloof were two teams from Tzaneen and a mixture of seven teams of members, family and friends. It’s a pity other members could not support this event, but all those that turned up had a great day with great food. The format was three games of eleven ends each with one trial end per game. Two sets of skins of five ends each and one Skin on the eleventh end worth one point each and two points for a win. Maximum five points per game. First place overall went to Ally Morrison and his team from Tzaneen with 12,5 points out of 15. There were three teams on 12 points: Tulli de Beer,

Antoinette Botha and Pieter, but due to aggregate second and third positions went to Tulli and his team, and Antoinette and her team. Overall standings between the two clubs went to Eiland with 85 points out of a total of 135, with Duiwelskloof scraping a mere 50 points. Hopefully next year DWK will have more regular members involved to make the event more competitive and reﬂective of what the competition really means. Die grootste uitdaging tot dusver was om verlede Saterdag vir Daryl Impey en Louis Meintjes in die padfietswedren te volg. Ou KK het die briljante idee gekry dat ons vir die dag elkeen ‘n dikwielfiets hier op die Copacabana huur en die resies op dié manier volg. Wel, wat na ‘n briljante idee geklink het, was toe ‘n ondeurdagte bôkkerop, want g’n mens kan by daai klomp hou op ‘n fiets nie, veral nie ‘n bejaarde met ‘n notaboek en pen in die hand nie. Gelukkig was die ambulans wat ons opgetel het darem voor die jaers by die eindpunt. Oubal kan rapporteer dat hy deur die klein kantvenstertjie bo die

So was Oubal se grootste vrees dat hy nie die Leeus se SupeRakbie-eindstryd sou kon sien nie, maar danksy die vriendskapsbande wat Oubal met ‘n paar Argentynse penstoters gesmee het, kon hy saam met hulle die debakel op ‘n ESPN-kanaal volg. ‘Tja, terugskouend was die Argentynse konneksie dalk net so ‘n swak idee as die dikwielfiets. Een week ‘n held, die volgende week ‘n hond, sê ou KK, waarmee Oubal noodgedwonge moet saamstem. Die Hurricanes het hul

huiswerk op Jantjies gedoen en sy beweegruimte só beperk, dat Oubal wonder of hy na dese plek sal kry in oorlede Diggers se span. En daai twee pasella drieë op ‘n skinkbord vir die Wellingtonners laat Oubal dink dat Allister glad nie so dom was om nie al die Leeus Bokke te maak nie. Van Wellington gepraat, Oubal kon uiteindelik na die eindstryd kommunikasie bewerkstellig met KoosKakie en ArthurIngelsman. Die goeie nuus is dat hulle darem by die regte Wellington uitgekom het, die slegte nuus is dat KK dit glo nie so baie geniet het as wat Oubal gedink het hy sou nie. Die lyn was egter baie sleg en al wat Oubal kon uitmaak, is “..ak plek, ...ak wedstryd”. Oubal vermoed ou KK het “swak” bedoel. Maar terug in Rio, waar ons nou ons aandag hoofsaaklik by die 7’s rakbie bepaal. Die Blitsbokke lyk besonder indrukwekkend geoordeel aan hul eerste twee groepwedstryde teen Spanje en veral Frankryk op dag een, so daar is ook hoop op ‘n medalje. Vergun Oubal egter ‘n oomblik van schadenfreude — dit was besonder aangenaam om NZ teen Japan te sien verloor in die 7’s — Brighton 2015, enigiemand?!
