Greater Tzaneen’s retired mayor redeployed as Speaker in a move that has caused shock and disbelief
Rakgoale
Mangena
The choice of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s retired mayor, Dikelede Mmetle, as the GTM’s new Speaker seems to be the only real surprise appointment in the Mopani area. A number of political and community leaders say Mmetle’s deployment in this role is actually shocking, rather than it be a surprise. It is also said that it was a move to pacify the ANC Womens’ League (ANCWL) in Mopani. Mmetle is the chairperson of the Mopani region of

The following Mayors have been appointed: Greater Tzaneen: Maripe Mangena Greater Letaba: Peter Matlou Greater Giyani: Sasavona Mathebula Maruleng: Dipuo Thobejane Ba-Phalaborwa: Pule Shayi. Mopani District Municipality: Nkakareng Rakgoale has been re-appointed as Mayor of the Mopani District Municipality.

Tweedens is Vlieg deurmekaar.

Prioriteite is nie reg nie
Lang toesprake, sommige niks meer nie as ‘n onsamehangende gebrabbel, is afgesteek.

Mr Faber Oceana of Tzaneen died after his car collided with a truck carrying bricks on the Tzaneen-Lydenburg Road. The driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries. In another accident on Monday on the same road, one person died while another was injured in an accident between two bakkies. The number of accidents on this road has increased at an alarming rate and hardly a day passes without an accident being reported. It is said that the high volume of traffic, as well as the ignorance and sheer recklessness of drivers might cause this. This has indeed become an extremely dangerous road.

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Fear and Faith
We all have various fears, but the greatest fear is that of the unknown. What will happen to us if some great tragedy should befall us? Is this fear real or is it imaginary? Now experts have study this and various ideas and reasons have been forthcoming, yet, we are still not convinced and fear remains prominent and maybe dominant in our lives. The Bible tells us “Fear not for I am always with you” the words that Jesus spoke. Many will argue that He spoke these words when He was here on earth and the do not really apply today. This is where faith comes in. But what is faith? Google defines it as follows: “complete trust or confidence in someone or something” — “strong belief in the doctrines of a religion based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.” As I see it, it is the belief in something that is not readily seen or perceived. We all have a certain degree of faith, be it not necessarily in religion. If I wake up in the morning and get ready for work I have got to have faith or a belief that my car will start in order to get me to work and that I will have a safe journey. Now this may sound flippant, but it is true. We all believe in something. “I believe in love”- can we actually see love? We can see expressions of love but cannot actually see love itself. This is where I differ from the Google definition that says: “a strong belief…” I believe it is a firm belief based on faith, faith in God who is unseen but whose presence is felt. The Bible can be proved, both Historically and Scientifically, but it is up to the individual to believe that this is the true word of God. Thus, the spiritual conviction plays an important role here. We all fear death in some way or the other, our faith is what makes it easier to accept. We all know that our life here on earth is for a period of time, how long, we do not know. Therefore, I think it is far better to have faith in a powerful God who comforts and heals, although we have not seen Him, many of us have been comforted by the knowledge that He keeps His promises. Do you have faith in God? Blessings

Networking tips from top female entrepreneurs As we celebrate Women’s Month, the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, sponsored by Sanlam and Business/Partners has revealed a record number of entries received from female entrepreneurs — growing by more than 38% from 2015. Gugu Mjadu, spokesperson for the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, says that this is extremely encouraging given the latest 2015-2016 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor SA report showed that only six women were engaged in early-stage entrepreneurship for every ten males in 2015, down from eight women in 2014. “We are lucky to have a wealth of undiscovered talent within our country that, given the right support, will flourish,” comments Mjadu. She goes on to say that this can be done by identifying the challenges that female SA entrepreneurs are regularly faced with and creating effective ways in which they can be overcome. “One challenge which was brought to light by the 2015 Female Entrepreneur Index is the limited ability to gain access to the internet and other electronic networks within SA. According to stats only 52% of the country is currently able to utilise the internet.” While the internet has changed the way business engages with its customers, traditional marketing tactics and networking continue to remain crucial for business development, says Mjadu. The female finalists of the competition share a top marketing tip that has aided
in growing and developing their business into the success it is today: 1. Identify the target audience and find out how best to reach them. Once this has been established, network within your industry by attending seminars and workshops. Ask for advice and reach out to mentors — Meisie Nkosi, Managing Director of Bella Bonni Guest House 2. Live the brand and always project an image of professionalism as there is only a seven second window to make a strong impression — Neli Magubane, chairman of Matleng Energy Solutions 3. While a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs are afraid that their business ideas may be stolen, it is important to share an overview of the business to as many people as possible. It’s all about who you know (and who they know) — Stacey Bruwer, CEO and co-founder of SPARK Schools 4. When networking, always have business cards available – new clients can be found in the most unexpected places — Nerina Smithland, CEO of Smithland Guest Apartments 5. Add a personal touch to your company’s offering in order to stand out from the crowd. The best form of marketing is word of mouth, so always give customers something good to talk about — Chanette Goosen, managing director of Rush Extreme Sports 6. Passion plays a huge part in becoming a successful entrepreneur as it constantly reminds people of why the business was started
in the first place and what the mission statement is. Use passion to market your story — Mishje Cooper, owner of Zoo-Zoo Land Daycare 7. Social media is best used to garner attention for products and services, as well as to build strong brand awareness, communicate and engage with customers and potential clients. It is also useful to network and engage with peer communities — Cara Nortman, managing director of SSQ Exhibitions 8. If an entrepreneur is looking for further reach for the business, consider social media - a low cost form of advertising and marketing that can even be utilised from a smartphone. Create profiles across the various platforms and use Instagram to link your posts together. Work at it daily to ensure consistent interest and engagement — Gali Gaon Segall, owner of Yemaya Group “With female entrepreneurs now making up 60% of the finalists in the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, we hope that this trend will continue going forward and that this will inspire other women to recognise their entrepreneurial potential, act upon it, and to use these simple — yet highly effective — marketing tools to promote and grow their business ventures,” concludes Mjadu.

tiaras to terror attacks
Girls are tough too, just ask Fran. From back braces and high school bullies to a ten day standoff with militant rebels in the midst of a terrifying West African civil war, Tzaneen export Fran Blandy defines determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. The 32-year-old Merensky High School alumni was packing for her move to Nairobi, Kenya, from her apartment in Paris when she took the time to speak to Bulletin about life as a foreign correspondent for Agence France Presse (AFP) — one of the three largest news agencies in the world. “It’s doubtful that I would be remembered for much more than uninspiring hockey games, a few appearances in school musicals, and being wrapped in a metal back brace,” she said with a boisterous chuckle. “If you’ve ever seen ‘Romy and Michelle’s High school reunion’; that was me for a good year and a half while wearing braces on my teeth!” Fran’s story starts much the same way as any of the, now celebrated, sporting stars who have managed to keep their Tzaneen roots hidden from the public eye until the advent of social media thrust them into the centre of the global village. But, after her graduation in 2001, her crowning as Letaba Show Queen and runner up in Miss Lowveld signalled the end of her tenure in the Lowveld and Fran moved to Pretoria, to kick start her journalistic dream through the Tshwane University of Technology. “Tzaneen was fantastically character building to say the least. Between being bullied by the ‘popular kids’, working as an assistant in a surf wear shop in Tzaneng Mall by day and waitress by night, the embarrassing pageants and my contorted spine, I survived with the skills I would later need to visit war-torn Africa. My spine may still not be straight, but it is now made of steel.” Upon completion of her studies and the

obligatory internship at SAPA, she was hired by AFP in Johannesburg where she worked for two years before being transferred to Cape Town. Fran travelled the African continent covering elections in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. She also published a number of in-depth articles on the AIDS pandemic which was, at the time, a rather contentious topic. The dream of one day becoming a foreign correspondent seemed within her grasp due to the exposure received from working for a huge international organization, but, there was one hurdle that stood in the way. “My French was still non-existent. Although I was able to translate stories, I could not speak a word of it without risking seriously offending any of my Parisian colleagues and quite possibly any of their pets, deities or deceased relatives. “Nevertheless I applied for a position in Dakar, got the job and was met by my new chief blabbering away in French on the tarmac one morning at 02:00. I was now the main English language correspondent for ten countries in West Africa, most of them

French, and had to step up. Much blood sweat and tears later I was fluent in six months.” In 2011 she was covering the civil war in Cote d’Ivoire when rebel forces stormed the city of Abidjan. Stuck in their office building, she and her colleagues slept under their desks for ten days, desperately hoping that the militia
terror once again a few months later, during the first terror attack on Charlie Hebdo. “I watched France come face to face with an unprecedented Islamist threat, which even hit my own neighbourhood in November 2013, when jihadists and suicide bombers carried out a spree of horror and nineteen people were gunned down at a café in my street. Life carried on in France, but after the gruesome truck massacre in Nice, a creeping anxiety has taken firm hold, and everyone is a little on edge, myself included.” Earlier this year, Fran was appointed as Deputy Bureau chief for Nairobi — AFP’s East African operation which covers twelve countries. It is a region she has always longed to cover. Reality has replaced the dream for the slightly awkward small-town bookworm. Not only is she a fully fletched foreign correspondent for one of journalism’s bastions of on-the-spot reporting, but she has found love too. And she found it in the form of a French soldier whom she has been dating for the last few years. Tzaneen Eco Club 25 August Journey to the Prince Edward Islands. The Tzaneen
Eco Club invites you to travel with them to the Prince Edward Islands. Few people know where these islands are, fewer still realise that these two volcanic specks in the vast Southern Ocean comprise SA’s only overseas territory and are the only part of the Republic zoned as “Special Nature Reserve” — the highest conservation status under SA law. Ecologist Wiam Haddad will introduce us to the amazing ark of creatures that call these windblown mountaintops in the ocean their home. We will look at the diverse habitats, from polar desert to mucky mire; and the host of pioneering plants that carve out a living there. We will look at the tough history of human occupation on the islands and how it came to be SA territory. Wiam will reflect on his own time spent on an unlikely paradise and ponder the future of this anachronistic gem. Wiam worked as field biologist in the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme. Upon return he continued studying, this time towards an MSc investigating the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Koedoes
Rriver catchment in Limpopo. After completing this degree in 2015, he took a position as Ecologist with ZZ2. The talk will be held at 18:30 at the Macadamia Community Hall. Tea and coffee will be served; visitors are welcome and pay a small fee of R25. Contact Marianne on 082 835 4185 for information.

• A different holiday with a different car
Suzuki Vitara meets a Tzaneen road trip Francisco Nwamba March 2016 Car reviews The Easter holidays are only a few days, there is no salary bonus and the school holidays are much shorter. So where does this leave one in terms of choosing the right holiday destination? Especially in an unstable economic climate? Well a few months ago, we de-
Distinctive automotive paints
cided to embark on an alternate weekend getaway plan, one that did not involve the coast and peak season flights. Instead we opted on a three hour road trip to the ever so green town of Tzaneen located in Limpopo. The car used for this trip? Again we didn’t opt for a luxurious German SUV or a British seven seating vehicle. Instead we got behind the wheel of the newly launched 1.6 litre Suzuki Vitara and proceeded to load the boot with the following items: Five sleeping bags, four tog bags (filled with all the necessities), numerous pillows, an espresso maker and of course, a burr grinder. And off we went Now you may think that the 86kW engine of the Vitara would barely cope with a fully loaded boot and five humans, one of them who has not seen a gym in months. Surprisingly on the very straight road to Polokwane, the Vitara comfortably cruised along at legal (and not so legal) speeds. With a car full of humans, the air-conditioner and seating comfort play a vital role on the joy/annoyance levels of the occupants. In the case of the Vitara, the air-conditioning proved so effective, we had to turn it down in the dead of summer. Mind you this was amidst high energy car karaoke. When the endorphins from the chocolate finally abated and drowsiness came into play, our back seat occupants slumbered away like well fed babies whilst the co-pilot and I chatted away about life, the economy and teenage heart breaks. Meanwhile the frugal Vitara steadily carried on silently, not disturbing our deep conversation or our dreaming passengers. After driving a straight road for hours, we finally
entered into Polokwane, our destination was now only 70 km away. This is where things got interesting because on route to Tzaneen is one the most stunning roads in the country, the Magoebaskloof pass. The first few corners awakened our sleeping passengers, sudden silence filled the vehicle as I tried my best to get the most out of the Vitara without causing car sickness. How did it do? Dynamically the Vitara does not disappoint one bit, as a compact SUV it’s fun, responsive and playful. The small engine did require a higher gear during the mountain pass and yes I did wish for more power, but the car was fully loaded. Eventually we arrived at our accommodation for the night. The real test was happening the next day, driving to a camp site which required going through ten kilometers of gravel road. The next morning our local friends had this look of worry in their eyes. Eventually they tried to convince me to leave the Vitara at our previous nights stop over, simply because they were unsure if the “cute” little car would make it. I reminded them of the lineage of this car and its sibling the Jimny, which has embarrassed many larger SUV’s on the dirt. At own risk They agreed and told me it was at my own risk. So off we went, a Toyota Hilux, a Toyota Prado and us in our Suzuki Vitara in tow. A few kilometer in, my friends remarked at how each time they looked in their rear view mirror, all they saw was a red little car keeping up. Some spots required careful planning, with the bigger cars taking their time. We simply sang along to our Bluetooth streamed music and gently got over whatever obsta-

Eddie shows his mettle in Classic rally
Eddie Simpson and his navigator from Pretoria entered the annual Polana Classic Car Rally in Eddie’s 1981 Chevrolet Corvette V8. The rally had 24 entrants consisting of classic Alfas, Mercedes Benzes, Austin Healys, MG’s etcetera. The rally started at Badplaas in Mapumalanga and continued into Swaziland. Most of the stages were held in Swaziland on very good tar roads. The first night
was spent at a game lodge in Eastern Swaziland. The stages were all time controlled where at times one had to travel a certain distance at a certain speed. The following day the rally left Swaziland and entered Mozambique. When they got to the outskirts of Maputo the entrants were met by traffic police and escorted through the city traffic to the Maputo race track, where all contest-
ants had to do eight laps. The evening prize giving function was held at the Polana Hotel and was attended by the Mozambican minister of sport and senior motorsport dignitaries. (Evergreen) Eddie Simpson was awarded third prize and received a trophy, certificate and a TV interview. After the rally the competitors were treated to a two day stay at the five star Polana Hotel.
We’ll move it to the moon and back Three million kilometers is one heck of a long way — in fact, that journey would take you around the world 75 times! Just ask the guys at Tzaneen Trailer Hire, their trailers cover that distance every year. At Tzaneen Trailer Hire in Plantation road you are sure to find the right size trailer to move just about anything that needs to get from point A to point B in a jiffy. In June this year Tzaneen Trailer Hire celebrated a decade in the business of moving stuff. quality experience.” With the recent addition of manager Dennis McCarthy to the family, this thriving enterprise is now gearing up to expand their operations into the caravan refurbishing and repairs market. McCarthy has extensive knowledge of the business which he acquired during his tenure at Campworld, where his core responsibility was the refurbishing of their caravans. “Dennis is a highly skilled tradesman and so far we have already assisted a number of our local customers with a variety of caravan repairs and they have all been impressed and satisfied.” Not only do they move you and your belongings around, but Tzaneen Trailer Hire also found a way to move the hot summer thirst into the back of your most distant memories with their filtered water ice cubes and solid blocks sold at prices so cold it would freeze over anything the Bushveld sun can throw at you. They deliver ice to large national retailers including Checkers and PicknPay and are open to the public. So hop over to Tzaneen Trailer hire and get moving. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Suzuki Vitara meets a Tzaneen road trip • From page 10 ver whatever obstacle was in our way, similar to how the Jimny clears most off-road obstacles. The thing about these Suzuki’s is that they have size on their side and extremely capable off-road abilities. By the time we reached our camp site, our Toyota Hilux driving friend could only sing the Vitara’s praises and any car person will know how difficult it is to convince a Hilux driver. Home time A few days later, we were on our way home. Once we reached Johannesburg, only having used a tank and a half of fuel, we all looked proudly at the Vitara. Not only had we not damaged a single thing on the GL+ we drove fitted with the Rugged Package, we all had a comfortable trip to and from our destination. We didn’t spent tons of money, we didn’t travel for long hours and we had lots of fun. In the current economic climate, many are looking at buying down to save costs. Many are also looking at cutting down on expensive holidays. Stunning areas like Tzaneen and cars like the Suzuki Vitara give us hope that it’s not all doom and gloom. For a few thousand rand one can have a great weekend away. Similarly at a starting price of R239 900, one can get a great looking, capable and reliable compact SUV. If buying down for you means getting into a car like the new Vitara, then all we can say is happy savings.

SLC stood up at Ash River
Robin Lacey with Jodi Williamson
Stanford Lake College’s kayak team recently made their way to Clarens for the annual Ash River Festival. With some snow on the mountains, it promised to be a cool weekend with some epic paddling. Saturday morning proved warmer than previous years at a sweet -5°C! Registration opened at 08:00 at Alles-verlooren rapid, where entrants got race numbers, race plans, safety briefings and a rude awakening with some very cold water. There were two race types: kayak racing and raft racing. SLC entered two teams in the raft race; Kate Wood with Meghan du Preez, who won the event; and Robin Lacey with Jodi Williamson. In the kayak event there were different categories according to skill level and age.
Keegan van Jaarsveld was in the intermediate class; and in the beginner class, SLC had Owen Venter, Matthew Lunt (second) and Casper Venter (first). In the overall junior age category (18 years and younger), Keegan came second and Casper third. Mr Fullard managed to make the finals in the expert class, but took a swim on the infamous “bridge rapid”. On Sunday, there was an instructional social run where everyone paddles down the river and enjoys time with friends and the opportunity to learn some valuable skills from the top paddlers. Owen Venter also volunteered to test out a newly designed watercraft and took it on its first trip down the river. SLC was the only school-related team participating — and the pupils kept the SLC name up high and made their school proud.
Clemen Gold Wolkberg trail was huge success This past weekend, Stanford Lake College hosted the hugely successful Clemen Gold Wolkberg Trail Run. The two day race has grown from 42 runners in 2014 to 198 this year, with a total of 350 runners taking part over the two days. The race has become a “must do” in trail running circles. Day 1 started in (a very cold) Georges Valley as runners headed up the Iron Crown. Edwin Sesipi led from the start and it was
obvious that defending champion Bennie Roux would have to work hard to stay with him. Edwin summited the Iron Crown in an impressive 1:37 and continued leading down the other side of the mountain. In the women’s race, British elite runner Holly Page proved why she was the favourite and pushed the leading men up The Mountain. The runners headed down the Iron Crown towards Haenertsburg, passing through the

Day 2 was a slightly shorter run with the pack taking on the 25 km trail surrounding SLC. The course included some magnificent forest single-track as well as fast, flat roads, starting and ending at the school. Once again it was Edwin Sesipi and Holly Page who dominated the rest of the pack to secure their overall wins.
Overall, second and third went to Ben Pelligrini and Herman Muller, while in the ladies’ race, Marcelle Coetzee and Naomi Brand took the podium spots. Stanford’s own Amy Taylor completed the course on Day 1, while the school’s Headmaster, Mr Craig Carolan, completed both days in a very competitive time. Tiaan Fullard showed why he was a podium finisher last year, coming in 11th overall behind a highly competitive field.

Oubal salueer!
Rugby...Wayde triunfa no Rio Rugby Today verslag gedoen oor die rakbie in sý rubriek, For The Win, wat amper iets soos Oubal se rubriek is, net met ‘n paar meer lesers. Vriend Nate het ‘n baie insiggewende kort artikel gedoen waarin hy onomwonde verklaar: Rugby sevens is the greatest sport at this year’s Olympics! Dis wat hy sê in sy artikel: What’s that mean? It means this is the most thrilling sport you’ve ever seen, all full-field runs, broken tackles, non-stop action. You know those plays in football where there are 15 laterals and somehow they convert for a 80-yard touchdown and it’s the most thrilling play of the year? That happens like four times a game in sevens, and the games are only 14 minutes long.
