My 2 priorities

Tzaneen’s new executive mayor, Mr Maripe Mangena, didn’t waste any time whatsoever to spell out his priorities after his election on Wednesday last week. Priority 1: A new luxury mayoral car. And before close of business on Friday the deal for a new Merecedes Benz GLE 350 was signed and sealed. Retail price: R1,2 million — kindly sponsored by the GTM’s ratepayers. The gravy train is unstoppable...
Another saucy affair is the case of the previous mayoral car, but that is a story for next week. Priority 2: The names of places and streets must change. There is nothing wrong with this if it is done in a transparent way and after proper consultations with the community. (In his first meeting with councillors and officials, he asked them not to run to the media if they experienced problems, making people think that he might not be strong on transparency)

However, it would have been nice if he had proclaimed that service delivery and stamping out all forms of corruption deserve the new council’s full attention, and a concerted effort to run a clean administration — as the top priorities. Hopefully such an announcement by his worship is to follow, sooner rather than later. — Francois Aucamp francois@bulletin.us.com

The wreck of one of the vehicles involved in an accident in Tzaneen on Wednesday afternoon. Two delivery vehicles colided head-on as they rounded a bend at the Tzaneen Garden Centre at the Agatha Street entrance to town. Nobody was seriously injured and the cause of the accident is still being investigated. More about this on our Facebook page. Photo: Joe Dryer
Tzaneen’s newly elected mayor, Mr Maripe Mangena, addressed municipal workers and labour unions at the new R16 million private lapa swimming facility in Tzaneen on Tuesday. The purpose of his address was to introduce himself, the new ANC Chief Whip, Mr Cromwel Nhemo, and the new speaker, Ms Dikilede Mmetle to the GTM workforce. In a bold statement, Mangena promised the workers present on the new grandstand beside the empty leaking swimming bath that he would harbour an open-door policy and will always be available to speak to the workers should they have any serious issues that need his attention. He also pleaded with the workers to keep
their problems inside the structures of the GTM and not to “run to the media to look for a solution”. The brief gathering lasted for roughly an hour before everyone was dismissed. A few traffic officials stayed behind to assist a member of the council who drove her brand new German luxury car off the side of the service delivery ramp at the start of the proceedings. To put things into perspective: the new mayor, Mangena, served as ANC chief whip during the previous term and took over as mayor from Mmetle. Mmetle in turn swapped places with Mr Cassius Machimana who was the speaker and Nhemo, a leading figure in Samwu swopped roles
with Mangena. It all seems very confusing as everything has changed but everything has also stayed the same. The new mayor has promised to establish a geographical names committee that will be responsible for renaming streets and other important places in the area. As to whether the GTM will also make plans to appoint life guards at the swimming bath and perhaps allow a few selected members of public to enjoy the bath they paid for to reconstruct, remains a mystery almost six months after the supposed training programme was bought and paid for; again at the ratepayers’ expense. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
