“Stay and learn or leave forever…”

SMIT ADVISEURS FSP: 44595

“Give us our money now!” Local SAPS members were deployed to the scene and were monitoring the situation when principal Pule Mashele made his appearance and addressed the students. “I have already made payments to your accounts yesterday (Wednesday). If you have not received your money yet, it means that there is either a problem or it needs to be released by your individual banks. We are here to learn, not to play games. You have a choice. Those of you willing to accept my statement can stay and learn, the rest of you can go home and stay there forever if you like.” Mashele had no further comment for the media and referred the matter to their central office. At the time of going to print Bulletin had not obtained official comment from the TVET and all calls to their office went unanswered. Students attending the Letaba TVET College in Tzaneen went on the rampage this week due to bursaries allegedly not received on time. The bursaries are paid by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to the account of the college and then distributed to the qualifying students. This money is intended as an allowance to assist with transportation and lodging for the respective students attending the college daily. The NSFAS has an annual funding budget of R8.5 billion and provides various bursaries to students at public universities, and FET (Further Education Training) colleges. Those who receive bursaries also do not have to pay back the monetary value, and instead enter the employment sector to work back the value of the bursary. Frustrated staff at the campus were visibly concerned for their safety on Thursday morning as hundreds of angry students took up positions in front of the campus gates singing struggle songs and shouting
