Tzaneen’s newly elected ANC mayor, Maripe Mangena’s controversial R1,2 million Merc took a piggyback tour of the town on Wednesday morning. The vehicle, which was purchased not a month ago, was loaded onto a flatbed truck and towed off the premises by the town’s sheriff. This after the municipality failed to comply with a court order to pay legal costs amounting to R111 691.08 resulting from a hefty court battle over the awarding of tenders to the value of R20 million. The case involved Quality Plant Hire and Expectra 388 CC who took the GTM and two other parties to court over the awarding of a construction tender. The court ruled that the tender be re-advertised and the municipality pay the legal costs. Not two hours after the repossession, the GTM paid over the money and the vehicle was returned. In true style, the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, used his personal Facebook profile as a platform to attack the sheriff and the media boldly labelling the incident an “FBI movie style execution of
a warrant.” He added “it’s strange that the sheriff also brought a journalist along as to embarrass the municipality” and reportedly accused lawyers and the sheriff of being unreasonable in attaching the mayor’s car without affording the municipality the opportunity to settle the bill.
Earlier this month the Sheriff repossessed another GTM vehicle in a similar fashion which is advertised in this week’s paper as going on auction to cover legal costs still outstand-

ing. The GTM reportedly still owe the sheriff storage fees for the said vehicle as well. Amidst the current embarrassing circumstances it would seem contradictory that Ndlala said on Facebook “the finances of the municipality are intact and healthy, whatever you hear is mere propaganda and political grandstanding. We are not just talking, we have documented proof, please do not be alarmed.” The DA in the province will request a forensic investigation of expenditure within the municipality according to Jacques Smalle, provincial leader of the DA in Limpopo and a member of the provincial legislature.
