ABOVE: The mayor’s new Merc leaving the municipal premises on the back of a tow-truck. INSERT: Neville Ndlala, The GTM spokesperson, poses next to the vehicle after it was returned a few hours later when the municipality made payment. He posted the photograph on his personal Facebook profile.
Tzaneen’s newly elected ANC mayor, Maripe Mangena’s controversial R1,2 million Merc took a piggyback tour of the town on Wednesday morning. The vehicle, which was purchased not a month ago, was loaded onto a flatbed truck and towed off the premises by the town’s sheriff. This after the municipality failed to comply with a court order to pay legal costs amounting to R111 691.08 resulting from a hefty court battle over the awarding of tenders to the value of R20 million. The case involved Quality Plant Hire and Expectra 388 CC who took the GTM and two other parties to court over the awarding of a construction tender. The court ruled that the tender be re-advertised and the municipality pay the legal costs. Not two hours after the repossession, the GTM paid over the money and the vehicle was returned. In true style, the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, used his personal Facebook profile as a platform to attack the sheriff and the media boldly labelling the incident an “FBI movie style execution of
a warrant.” He added “it’s strange that the sheriff also brought a journalist along as to embarrass the municipality” and reportedly accused lawyers and the sheriff of being unreasonable in attaching the mayor’s car without affording the municipality the opportunity to settle the bill.
Earlier this month the Sheriff repossessed another GTM vehicle in a similar fashion which is advertised in this week’s paper as going on auction to cover legal costs still outstand-

ing. The GTM reportedly still owe the sheriff storage fees for the said vehicle as well. Amidst the current embarrassing circumstances it would seem contradictory that Ndlala said on Facebook “the finances of the municipality are intact and healthy, whatever you hear is mere propaganda and political grandstanding. We are not just talking, we have documented proof, please do not be alarmed.” The DA in the province will request a forensic investigation of expenditure within the municipality according to Jacques Smalle, provincial leader of the DA in Limpopo and a member of the provincial legislature.

By aankoms moes die vrou in ongevalle wakker gemaak word. My kof man dit is ‘n hospitaal! I will see you nownow. Verduidelik jy dit nou vir my!
Weet jy wat so jaar gelede was my ma daar geopereer ja in daai abattoir van jou. Sy was in intensief. Die kontras lê V.I.

High Grove guests robbed at gunpoint
A brother and sister pair from Botswana were held at gunpoint and robbed of their personal belongings and vehicle during their stay at High Grove Lodge in Tzaneen this weekend. The siblings were visiting Tzaneen to attend a school swimming gala for the sister’s son at Merensky High school that afternoon. It is reported that at around 03:00 on Monday morning three suspects gained access to the lodge premises by breaking through a concrete slab in the boundary wall adjacent to an overgrown vacant field. They then cut through the barbed wire fencing and made their way to the laundry room where they overpowered and tied up a live-in staff member. “The suspects broke through two doors to get to the room where we keep the spare keys to our lodge rooms,” explained Mr Frikkie van der Merwe, the owner of High Grove. “They knew that we were not open for business at the restaurant on Sundays and that
only the lodge was operating. They also knew exactly where they wanted to get to, which gives me the impression that they have been here before, possibly as guests.” After obtaining the keys they entered the room in which the siblings were staying and held them at gunpoint while they robbed them. According to the female victim, one of the men behaved very aggressively and hit her over the head with his firearm. At one point he also cocked his pistol in front of them. The suspects took the couple to the laundry room where they tied them up along with the staff member. They then went back to the vacant rooms and stole six flat screen televisions, loaded their loot into the couple’s double-cab Toyota vehicle and fled the scene.

The bridge over the Letaba River on the R71 towards the Tzaneen show grounds suffered extensive damage on Sunday night when a driver lost control over his vehicle and smashed through the barrier. It is still unclear exactly what caused the accident, but the fact that there were no deaths, is nothing short of a miracle according to bystanders at the scene. It is alleged that the driver of the Mercedes Benz fled the scene shortly after the accident. The vehicle was completely disintegrated in the collision and towed away a short while later. Tzaneen Cluster looks bleak in the face of crime Murder in the Limpopo province saw an increase of 15.6 percent in the period since March 2015. This statistic, along with the list of others released to the public last week at the Provincial Legislature in Lebowakgomo, paint a very dark picture for Tzaneen’s cluster policing area. Attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and sexual offences all showed increases with assault GBH rising by almost five percent. The report states boldly though, that total truck hijackings have decreased by 44.4 percent and bank robberies were down a whopping 100 percent – a rather confusing statistic given the robbery at a
bank in downtown Tzaneen not a month ago. Maake police station, just outside Tzaneen, has the third highest murder and attempted murder rate in the province. “The upward trend in aggressive crimes such as assault, murder and attempted murder in the Tzaneen area are extremely troublesome. Especially considering that the focus nowadays seems to be on bringing those guilty of hate speech and racial slandering to book,” said one member of the public after the release of the statistics last week. Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gnl Nneke Ledwaba, reiterated that crime was not just for the police to solve, but needed
every member of the public to get involved. Crimes as reported for the Tzaneen cluster policing area during the period April 2015 to March 2016, according to the latest crime statistics released last week, are summarized below. The figures in brackets refer to the statistics from the previous period, being April 2014 to March 2015. Bear in mind that these figures reflect crimes that were reported to the police.

Sapekoe enters round 12...
The Message
16 September 2016 While the police maintain a positive outlook over the recently released crime statistics for Limpopo, the numbers themselves do not look at all convincing. Especially not for Tzaneen and it’s immediate surroundings. It is a worrisome state of affairs when the focal point of the SAPS crime prevention strategy seems to be on arresting drug users in the townships while guest lodge- and restaurant attacks show a sharp rise. We feel sorry for the owners of these establishments who suffer a loss of income due a tendency which is completely out of their (and by the looks of it the police’s) control. At the same time, we feel even sorrier for Tzaneen’s economy. Lodges and restaurants generate a tremendous amount of outside income as visitors to our lovely town provide a much needed financial injection - and word-of-mouth exposure which could either attract or deter further investment. Is it really fair to expect lodge owners to bear the burden of security entirely on their own? Certainly the fact that six lodges were robbed so far this year should be at the top of the SAPS priority list. Not too long ago, in 2012, the small town of Hazyview came under fire with lodge attacks averaging around four a month. They are still struggling to pick up the pieces as tourism dropped so drastically that many lodges had to close their doors. We should learn from them. It would appear that preventing crime has taken a back seat to the less arduous option of responding to it. We appeal to Tzaneen’s private security companies and the local SAPS to sit down and implement a feasible strategy to prevent future attacks before we, as a community, lose what is left of our already tattered reputation.

Spiritual walk
On September 17th, 2004, Bulletin carried the headline that the farming activities at Sapekoe had been ordered to a halt. The news shook the local community as the local economy stood to lose millions. Twelve years later the embattled Sapekoe’s future still stands in the balance.

A question is often asked: “When does my spiritual walk actually start?” Many might say that it is when you get baptised, or if this happened when you were still a child, it happens when you have been confirmed. Actually, although these might be part of the process, your spiritual walk only starts when you have accepted Jesus as your Saviour. This can happen at anytime in your life and sometimes it only happens late in life. People often say that they have accepted Jesus, but that is where it ends. One needs to build on this relationship continually and there are many means of doing this: involvement in the life of the church, going on different courses or enlightment training. It is our duty to find out about these and usually it is through our church that we learn about them, though another source may be through a Christian friend. When going on these “courses” each person will experience them differently. I believe that this is where God talks to us, be it through something or someone we come into contact with whilst on this journey with God. Often, someone will just go on these “courses” on the insistence of, or constant nagging of a friend. Sometimes we find that although the course was helpful it did not affect us as we thought it would. It is being open to the Holy Spirit that will help us and once we open ourselves up, we receive enlightment. Only when we are unified in the body of Christ can we say we are walking in the light of Christ. We cannot continue our spiritual walk alone as we need input from others, we need their prayers and their support. Often, we feel we can do it on our own but this always seems to fail and we become despondent. Enjoyment comes with sharing! Our own personal meeting with Christ can affect others either positively or negatively. But in all things pray. God Bless, Ron

Unite around Fire 24 September National
Braai Day CHICKEN VINDALOO POTJIE The 24th September is National Braai Day and all South Africans are encouraged to unite around a fire and celebrate our country. Add this tasty recipe to your braai day repertoire and grab your friends and family, light a fire and wave your flag as you reflect on our proud heritage.
The defining characteristic of Vindaloo curry is the spicy vinegar-based paste we’re making as a marinade for the chicken. In my experience, two hours is sufficient when marinating deboned pieces of chicken meat, and that is how we do it here, but longer or shorter will also be fine. Once you’ve got the chicken in the marinade, there is very little work to be done while you’re at the fire making the potjie. As such, this is a great meal when you’ve got guests coming over, or to prepare at home and finish at a picnic braai area. The Vindaloo can also be made very successfully with pork meat. Just use 1kg of deboned pork neck, cut into cubes, and increase the cooking time until you lift the lid, to 45 minutes. The list of ingredients might look long, but these are all things you probably have in your kitchen already. What you need (feeds 6) For the vindaloo mix 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp coriander 1 tsp chilli or cayenne pepper 1 tsp mustard seeds 4 cloves (whole) 4 cardamom seeds 1 tot vinegar (normal grape vinegar is fine) 1 tot oil 4 garlic cloves (crushed) ginger, equal in volume to the
garlic (grated) To make the potjie 1 kg deboned chicken thighs or 8 chicken breasts (cut into cubes) 1 tot butter 1 onion (chopped) 1 cinnamon stick 1 or more red chillies (optional) 1 tin tomatoes (chopped or cherry) 1 tsp sugar fresh coriander (to serve) What to do 1. Mix all the vindaloo spices, garlic, ginger, vinegar and oil together in a bowl to form a paste. A spoon is better than a hand for this mixing procedure. Now add the chicken pieces to the bowl and, still using the spoon, smear the paste all over them so that they are well coated. Cover the bowl and let everyone get to know each other for about 2 hours. If you’re in a big hurry, less than 2 hours is also fine. 2. Heat the butter in your potjie and fry the onion for about 4 minutes until it has some attitude. 3. Now add the marinated chicken pieces and fry for a few minutes until they are browned on most sides. Sometimes those flames under a potjie make it hotter than you think and this step runs away from you a bit. If you lose control during this step and things want to burn, add a dash of water and loosen the bits of matter stuck to the bottom of the potjie with your wooden spoon. Those bits are the ones that want to cause burning, and this allows you to wrestle back control from the fire. This is general advice applicable to all curry potjies, not just this recipe. 4. Throw in the cinnamon stick and the remaining juices and marinade in the bottom of the bowl the chicken was in. Stir through and continue to fry for another minute or two. 5. Optional step: If you like to suffer or like a very hot curry, add some additional chopped chillies when you are adding the chicken to the potjie. This step is not compulsory – remember, there is already a teaspoon of chilli powder in the meal. 6. Once the chicken and spices are browned to your liking, add the tomatoes and sugar and stir in. Put the lid on the potjie and let it simmer for about 30 minutes on low heat. Then remove the lid and let it simmer uncovered for another few minutes until you are satisfied with the consistency of the sauce. Do check the fluid levels in the potjie as you don’t want it to burn. 7. Serve the curry with a bunch of fresh coriander and roti or basmati rice.

Simple Tomato-And-Onion Sauce (Southern African) • By Zurie Total Time 20mins Prep 5 mins Cook 15 mins Posted for “Looking to Africa”, African Cooking Forum, Jan 2009. This is an example of the simple sauce which is made to serve as a “salsa” or topping for cornmeal porridge or “pap”, a staple food, in almost all of Africa except the far eastern and western parts. Of course there are many variations, and if you have any leftover gravy, add it to this basic sauce while it cooks. If you can spare a handful of ground beef, that goes in too. For many rural people “pap en sous” (thick cornmeal mush and this salsa) might be their entire meal. As enough “pap” is made, tummies do get full. This recipe is smallish and will serve 3 - 4. Easily doubled, and exact ingredients do not matter. Ingredients Nutrition Servings 4 • 1 large onion, peeled and sliced • fat (for frying) or oil • 6 large fresh chopped tomatoes • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt (or to taste) • 1 -2 teaspoon chopped hot pepper (fresh or dried, to taste) (optional) Directions 1. In a pot, fry the onion in oil, fat or lard. Stir often, until onion turn pale brown. 2. Add the tomatoes and rest of ingredients. 3. It’s best to cover the pot and simmer until nicely thickened, or leave open and stir often. 4. Add any extras you like while it cooks, such as gravy or a little ground meat. To thicken and brown the simple sauce, sauce powder (like Bisto) is often stirred into a little lukewarm water, and added. 5. You can also add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce. 6. Serve over pap/sadza/ugali (and there are many other names for it in the various languages!) Of course, if it is available, this would be served with a meat stew or grilled meat. If meats are not on the menu, this is the meal. Sometimes spinach or swiss chard is added to the plate as a side veggie. http://www.food.com/recipe/simple-tomato-and-onion-sauce-southern-african-345682

The Stanford - St Dunstan’s College Derby was packed with action Stanford Lake College hosted St Dunstan’s College from Benoni over weekend. During this visit, most of the sporting codes - hockey, rugby, tennis, squash and netball were played in some rather trying conditions given the weather on the Friday. The two schools were well matched and each team entered their field of play amidst fantastic local crowd support which has become common place at Stanford derbies. On the netball courts the girls fought hard and played well against their Gauteng counterparts, with the u.14 and u.15 teams finishing their matches only three goals behind St Dunstan’s. Stanford’s second team braved the rain and managed a descent score against a more experienced team with their loss of 17-4. The first team yet again proved they were a formidable force to be reckoned with in a nail-biting fixture, where they were only two goals down at the three-quarter mark. However, the team seemed to lack mental stamina and succumbed to a 33-23 defeat at the final whistle. On the tennis courts it was a tough day out for the Stanfordians who do not get as much court time as their competitors. Regardless of their disadvantage the SLC tennis stars put up a great fight with Lara Dando going down 6-3 agains her St Dunstan’s opponent. Squash was added to the Derby for the first time this year thanks
to the new High Performance Centre. The games were evenly matched and the final score was 2-2 with Marc Stirling and Kyle Bain winning their respective matches. On the hockey field Stanford’s boys really enforced their dominance with each of the four teams, walking away victorious on the day. Due to the rainy weather, the first team match was stopped five minutes early, which resulted in a fantastic 2-0 win for the hosts. The second team played to a goalless
the u.14’s steamrolled St Dunstan’s with an impressive 4-0 victory. The three SLC rugby teams performed very well in their annual derby. The u.15’s played some good structured rugby to draw their match while the second team completely dominated their opponents, winning their fixture by a comfortable margin. The first team showed some early nerves and took a very long time to get off the mark in what was a close game. The score was 15-all with 20 minutes to play. Luckily the Honey Badgers finally woke up and turned up the heat. They boasted a 43-15 victory at the final whistle.

draw while the u.16 boys won their match with a single goal. The stars of the hockey field were most certainly the u.14 boys who pulverised the visitors by three goals to nil. The girls hockey was played on Saturday. The first team played well, but left many opportunities to be missed as they managed a one-all draw. The second team placed their mark firmly in the minds of the visitors when they won their match 3-0, followed by another 2-1 victory by their u.15 counterparts.
The mighty Vossies are Vuyo Mayindi, Selby Kgohloane, Tiyani Mhlongo and Hlabathi Mabasa. In the middle are Millard Nyathi, Kabelo Selane, Ben Mambisa, Kgomotso Mohlaloganye, Nicholas Kgatle, Tumelo Maponya and Modibe Ramalepe. At the back are Patrick Makgoba (Coach), Matimu Maberemisi, Blessings Ramatsoma, Vossie Mascot, Grattitude Ramafalo and Papi Mametja.
Ben Vorster High School recently participated in the Modjadjiskloof Soccer Tournament which was held at The King’s Court. Seven schools faced off for glory in heated rounds of tightly contested matches which saw the mighty Vossies take second place overall. In their first match against Southern Cross, Blessings Ramatsoma and Fortune Maake found the back of the net twice for the Vossies which landed them a 2-0 victory.
Their second match was against Eagles Nest and despite an impressive goal by Nicholas Kgatle, the Vossies had to concede a 2-1 defeat. There was some concelation though when the Vossies won their following match 1-0 against Merensky with a well positioned goal by Millard Nyathi, and played to a 1-1 draw against the hosts, King’s Court. “We are extremely proud of our team’s performance and from the Vossie family we would like to extend a very hearty congratulations.”
