Jayden talks about running with the cubs

Houses Of Prayer Everywhere (HOPE) is a very simple strategy to pray and care for streets within communities everywhere around South Africa. The red post box placed outside your home or business could become a beacon of hope to those in your area in need of prayer. The idea is a simple one in that members of the community who need prayer for a certain situation in their life, can place their prayer request into the HOPE box and know that someone will be praying for them. “Loving our communities and seeing the transformation we desire, starts by praying for those who live on our street,” is the motto on their website www. adopt-hope.co.za and focusses on the belief that prayer will change the spiritual climate of a specific neighbourhood and demolish the walls of division. The idea behind these little red boxes goes even further than prayer alone, as it encourages neighbours to actively become involved in their neighbour-

Nor will they have to fear that some random stranger will come knocking on their door to preach or pray for them at home. The first area in the country where these prayer boxes started mushrooming around communities and townships was in the Helderberg Basin near Somerset West. Since then the movement has spread throughout South Africa and currently there are 37 of these little boxes in various areas around Tzaneen. If you would like to get involved in the movement and register your neighbourhood, suburb or institution as a beacon of hope, feel free to send an email request to agstzaneen@ gmail.com or visit the website www.adopt-hope.co.za for more information. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Head Lion survives motorcycle crash The president of the Lions Club Tzaneen, Endria Enslin (37) survived a horrific motorcycle accident on Friday evening. She was underway to Parys in the Free State to attend the Lions Midyear Convention. “It really was just an accident,” Enslin told Bulletin from her hospital bed at Mediclinic Tzaneen on Monday morning. “I was about 40 kilometres from Parys and travelling behind a lady in a Toyota Corolla, the old kind. And trust me I don’t think I could have hit anything harder than that Toyota!” she said in good spirits.

According to her own account, she was travelling at approximately 80 kilometres per hour when the driver of the vehicle in front of her indicated a left turn. “I went to the right to overtake her when suddenly she turned right and straight into my path. I knew I was going to hit the car and really didn’t want to go through a window, so I lifted the bike’s front wheel and aimed for the vehicle’s bonnet.” Endria hit the vehicle, flew off her bike and landed next to the road about 30 metres away. Miraculously she survived with a fractured

pelvic bone and some injuries to her left leg. “I was lying there on the ground thinking that I need to get my bag with all my identity documents and my wallet so that when the medics arrive I will be able to let my people know. I looked over to where my bike was laying and saw flames coming from it, so I lifted my helmet off my head to try and throw it at the driver of the vehicle to get her attention. Thankfully

at that moment a biker stopped at the scene and immediately rushed over to gather all my stuff from the wreck.” Endria was rushed off to Mediclinic Vereeniging and then transferred – at her own request – to Mediclinic Tzaneen where she is currently being treated. In true “Endria fashion” she posted photos of the wreck of her BMW F800GS over social media with the comment “for sale slightly used” as

a caption. It was a close call, but Endria will soon be back on the road. “There was a higher power looking out for little Endria this weekend, that’s for sure! I just have to thank the fantastic staff of Mediclinic Tzaneen for the treatment I am currently receiving, and all the members of the community for their well wishes during this time.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Primary school boy says his shark shirt scared lion Continued from page 1 ... where his wounds were cleaned, stitched and dressed. The cub’s sharp claws had ripped Jayden’s shirt and left some scratches down his back. He had a cut on his left hand from the fall, and there was a shallow bite mark on his neck where the cub had nipped him. He was discharged the following morning at 07:30. Bulletin spoke to his parents later that day at the lodge, where they had stayed the night. Jayden was sitting calmly on his chair stroking a meerkat when we arrived. “Of course I was frightened when I saw what happened, but it was a freak accident,” said mom, Sonja, “who can we really be upset at other than mother nature? Jayden is a child and so too are the lion cubs. When children play, they get excited and unfortunately sometimes one of them gets hurt. Thankfully the rangers had the situation under control and the staff and management of this lodge were absolutely outstanding in their handling of the incident.” According to Pieter, his son was frightened at first and hesitant to enter the cage, but after some pep talk and taking his hand, young Jayden agreed. “You know, these specific lions are about the same size as our dogs we have at home. Jayden plays with them every day and at times they also get a little rough with him because he is smaller than them and I believe

it was the same situation in this case. We really don’t blame anyone or any animal in particular – it was an accident. He has had a really wild week so far,” he said with a chuckle. Young Jayden was eager to share his account of the story with us as he had reportedly done with every member of the nursing staff at the hospital the night before. “That lion really got a fright when he saw my shirt, because I had a picture of a shark with big teeth on the front and that’s probably why he jumped me,” explained Jayden. “I

could hear my mom screaming my name from outside the cage and then a man came and smacked the lion on his bum with a stick. Another man bought me a really big milkshake and took me to hospital!” He kept the shirt as proof of the incident because “nobody is ever going to believe this story” he said. This was the first incident of its kind in more than a year and according to Van Deventer, it is because of the very strict rules they have in place at the park. Any person entering any of the enclosures does so at their own risk and signs an indemnity form in accordance with this. The rules are clearly explained to all visitors before they enter the cages with emphasis on no sudden movements and no running inside the enclosure. Anyone not obeying the rules is immediately escorted out of the cage by one of the rangers and issued with a complete refund. “Lions are very strange creatures. They don’t like sudden movements and they don’t want to be petted too softly as they are tough animals. It is because of these reasons that we make one hundred percent sure that the visitors feel comfortable and relaxed enough to enter one of the cages before we do so. We place a strong emphasis on the no running rule and urge parents to keep the smaller children close when they pet these animals. Although we are not happy about what happened, we are thankful that it was not a very serious incident and that Jayden came out of this incident in the manner that he did. He is a very brave young man and Letaba River Lodge cannot wait to have him and his family as our guests in the future.” The park offered to pay any medical fees not covered by the family’s medical aid and afforded them complimentary accommodation and meals at the lodge for the week.

The warning signs at the entrance to the animal enclosures at the park.

The owner of the park, André de Lange, was away on business in Pretoria at the time, but contacted the family telephonically to ensure that they had been assisted and to check up on Jayden’s progress. “We want to thank Marius and his team from the bottom of our hearts for all the support they showed us by driving us to and from the hospital and all the extras in between. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definitely return in the near future.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message

7 October 2016 Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church

Are we aware We should take the opportunity during breast cancer awareness month to point out a few things that we should be especially aware of concerning this often silent assassin. Firstly, we are all aware of the existence of breast cancer in both males and females and our awareness alone is not going to eliminate its existence. It simply is not enough to be aware of a problem, we need to educate people on how to deal with it – and people need to take the initiative and follow through. Lastly, part of the problem around this affliction is society’s approach to sexuality. Particularly in our schools. Not just the rural areas either, but even in some of the more larney private schools where sexuality is not being discussed openly enough with the students, or when it is discussed, it is not done in an inappropriate manner. Education on topics such as these is very important even more so, the way in which it is presented. These matters should be discussed with students with equal vigour and verve as the correct way to apply a Pythagorean rule in a geometric equation. Surely if school curriculums were adjusted to teach young teens the importance of proper health, diet, budgeting and exercise, we would release better adjusted individuals into the public and private sectors? Breast cancer should top the priority list of topics that could have a severe impact on your life. That and HIV or AIDS. Or how to parallel park. Perhaps we are too late, perhaps our moral obligations to our children fell before the fees did.

Local Hero Endria Enslin

Endria Enslin (37) is the vibrant president of the Lions Club Tzaneen branch. Endria is our Local Hero for the manner in which she has managed to uplift the spirits of staff and patients at Mediclinic Tzaneen despite recovering from her own motorcycle accident.

Bulletin will show a front page of twelve years back for the rest of the year to recall memories on the main issues of yesteryear. Enjoy it!

Mag die Here julle seen.

Beauties deliver food Food raised during the Face of Tzaneng Mall 2016 beauty pageant in Tzaneen last month, was distributed by the gorgeous trio of Katryn Barwise, Ronel Homu and Charline Colbourn this week. This year’s crowned Face of Tzaneng Mall, Ronel Homu chose to donate half of the food received to Vu’we Drop-in Centre in Nkowankowa. Homu is now launching a project to help this centre with some basic office supplies and furniture and a fresh new coat of paint for their building. “The staff at this centre was so overwhelmed at the

large amount of food we delivered that they continued to thank us for the duration of our stay at their offices,” explained the delightful Barwise. The rest of the food parcels received will be evenly distributed among the needy areas of Tzaneen and its surrounding townships. Should anyone be interested in assisting with donations towards the centre project, please send an email to Katryn Barwise at limpopobeautymodeling@ gmail.co.za. —Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The other, Ms Magda Bootha, a caregiver with more than 18 years experience and part of the Tzaneen Care Group, spoke about the path she walks with cancer patients. She peppers her English with Afrikaans and says if breast cancer is detected soon enough, there’s hope. She explains that there are four stages of cancer with four being the worst. The most important thing is for people to get to know their own Ms Jacqui Allan bodies. Most of the time, people aren’t even aware of having cancer as it’s usually not painful. Look out for lumps and examine yourself in the bath or shower. She describes it thus, “Dit voel soos ‘n harde ertjie,” Bootha has had two male patients with breast cancer and both have since died as both were stage four breast cancer, the most advanced stage. Men, historically, do not examine their bodies. “Hulle moet,” she says. Even though there’s more awareness generally as well as in the media, people still think, “It won’t get me.” Should the lump be cancerous, Bootha says never give up hope as there are many breast cancer survivors. Bootha says that when the Dr pronounces the dreaded words, “Dan haak hulle vas met ‘mevrou jy het kanker.’” It’s such a shock that most patients simply don’t recall the rest of the Dr’s conversation. Patients need to go back to the Dr and ask him to explain again. There’s denial, “onderhandel met die Here,” and depression. Bootha says if you’re cleared five years and longer you’re classified as a survivor. Before that you’re in remission. Bootha says that there’s a huge problem with breast cancer amongst black women. Their men folk historically do not want them to have mastectomies and would rather send them to a sangoma. A sangoma is no help to anyone with cancer. Should the women go ahead with a mastectomy the

husbands usually take on a mistress. Ms Jacqui Allan, Arts and Crafts Manager for Tzaneen Paint Pot, takes us back to the day she discovered a lump under both her left and right breast just over four years ago. Her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer just six months before her discovery. She had a friend who’d had breast cancer a year before her own discovery. Besides her mother, her grandmother had had a brain tumour, her uncle had liver cancer, an aunt had breast cancer and a niece had died in New Zealand three Ms Magda Bootha months previously of cancer. This niece initially had breast cancer and the cancer returned in the bones. All the men on Allan’s father’s side had or have some form of skin cancer. Allan was more alarmed about the burning sensation inside her 40 DD breasts than the two painless lumps. She says, “I waited another two months after the discovery because I was scared as deep down I knew I had cancer.” Then she swung into action. She was living in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, at the time and phoned the mammogram department. However, she needed a doctor’s referral first. She got that. After the mammogram, she had a sonar. Then came the biopsy. “Things moved very swiftly from there. The doctor had already phoned the oncologist and the surgeon. The oncologist broke the news that I had stage three breast cancer. He said that he couldn’t simply remove the lump but that he had to remove the entire breast. That was when I told my parents and friends. I also told the surgeon to remove both breasts, even though the biopsy was only done on one breast. I simply did not want to go through another biopsy with that thick needle. Nor did I want to hear in a year’s time that I have cancer in the other breast.” “My official diagnosis was 14th December. After removing both breasts, I underwent chemotherapy and radiation. I had eight chemo sessions and took an

expensive but effective anti-nausea tablet before each treatment. I hated the taste of metal in my mouth so ate plenty jelly sweets to get rid of the taste. “The radiation burnt and damaged my skin. It’s like lying on a sun bed. I had ten radiation sessions. After my first session, the machine broke. So I had to wait a month before I could continue.” Allan, who has very fair skin, warns, “If you’ve had breast cancer stay out of the sun. Always use suntan lotion, wear a hat and stay in the shade. “ When Allan’s depression set in her mother fetched her and brought her home to Tzaneen. Surrounded and supported by family and friends, her depression lifted. “The first hair loss was after the initial four sessions of red chemo known colloquially as the red devil. Then the chemo sessions changed to a chemo that goes slowly into the veins. I cried more about my hair loss than my non-existent boobs. I wore little hats during the time I had no hair. I’d had long hair a few months before my diagnosis but had cut it all off in sympathy with my friend who was going through cancer. My hair grew fluffy and it was only after I had that cut off that my hair grew properly again but it took six months.” Allan goes for her blood tests every year and everything is clear. She plans on celebrating five years on the 14th December when she becomes a survivor. Meanwhile her aunt has sewn false breasts for her that she tucks happily into an A cup bra. In order to lift her depression she’s saving up to go to Scotland when she turns 50. When asked why Scotland she says that she feels that her ancestry lay in that country and she yearns to see it. She’s hesitant about ever going through this treatment again if the cancer returns as she never ever wants to see those needles or go through the metal taste in her mouth again. “I’d rather take Cannabis Oil.” — Sue Ettmayr

throat.” The heat goes across the board. However the hottest chilli sauce, called Carolina Reaper, is the hottest chilli in the world. Some of the ingredients, like the lemon concentrate and smoke essence, are hard to find. Halkon is marketing six flavours at the moment. Not all are chilli sauces. There’s the Bourbon BBQ that complements the Iron Crown Ribs and Tennessee Burger and another BBQ sauce is in the making. This one will be a creamy garlic sauce with wine. The chilli sauces are Tongue Thai, Mango Mayhem, Crazy Capsicum and Raging Relish. One is Mexican style, the Thai chilli sauce has ginger, there’s curry leaf in the fiery Indian

The bowls business league kicked off last night with a bang!

This goes for the throat Chef Mr James Halkon (30) from the Iron Crown Pub and Bistro in Haenertsburg has officially put his tried and tested chilli sauces on the market. Halkon has been making them since his’ varsity days in Bournemouth, UK and some of his recipes are more than eight years old. Bottled with labels, each carries the logo of a black and white sausage dog with the Iron Crown gold crown logo at a precarious tilt on the dog’s head. When asked why a sausage dog, Halkon grins and says, “Because the product goes for the

“I don’t want to be a star. If you have to label me, I’m a journeyman actor. I think ‘star’ is what you call actors who can’t act.” – Paul Muni
