Avo-plan gaan voort Die projek om Sapekoe Landgoed se teeplantasies deur winsgewende avo-boorde te vervang, is steeds op dreef, ondanks vals gerugte dat dit in ‘n doodloopstraat beland het. Dit is ‘n stadige maar deursigtige proses wat onder die wakende oë van die Makgoba Trust, die grondeisekommissaris en die Meester van die Hooggeregshof gekoordineer word. Planne om die teelandgoed tot ‘n volhoubare ekonomiese eenheid te ontwikkel, het reeds twaalf jaar gelede ontstaan. In grondeise is die gebied aan die Makgoba-stam toegestaan, maar die verbouing van tee was weens verskeie ekonomiese redes nie lonend nie. ‘n Lys van ander moontlikhede is toe ter tafel gelê, maar deur onderlinge geskille in die Makgoba-groep gekelder. Die Makgoba Batebestuursgroep (MAM) is op die been gebring en saamgestel uit lede van die Makgoba Trust en die tamatiereus ZZ2. Dit is reeds gevestig as die anker van die onderne-

ming om die uitgebreide teeplantasies met avo’s te vervang as deel van ‘n plan om die sukkelende landgoed weer op dreef te kry. Mnr BJ van Zyl van ZZ2 en voorsitter van die MAM, het bevestig dat ontwikkeling van die projek voortgaan. Die herverkiesing van betroubare trustees in die dagbestuur van die landgoed is dié maand onderneem, nadat die vorige “steering committee” nie aan die verwagtinge voldoen het nie. Dit was deel van ‘n dispuut in Makgoba-geledere wat selfs tot gesprekke met Tzaneen se polisiehoof, genl Maggie Mathebula, gelei het, maar sonder oplossings. Die MAM gaan intussen voort met die ontbossing van teelande ter voorbereiding van beddings vir avo-boorde. Dit is deel van ‘n R500 miljoen-plan wat oor die volgende vier dekades groot buitelandse valuta vir die gebied kan verdien.

Van Zyl het bevestig dat die handelsmerk “Makgoba Afrika” reeds in Suid-Afrika en Europa geregistreer is. Die eerste avo’s van die volgende seisoen sal onder dié handelsmerk bemark en uitgevoer word. Nuus hieroor is reeds wyd onder die Makgoba-gemeenskap verwelkom. Kartonne met die handelsnaam is reeds gedruk en wag vir die uitvoermark.

Vlieg Vlieg weet nie so lekker van die nuwe jonger generasie redakteurtjies van nuuspapiertjies nie! Hy wens partykeer die oues het nie afgetree, weggetree, meegegee, padgegee, opgegee, ingegee of ontydig net hulle laaste asem gegee nie! Vlieg was juis verlede week so ontsteld omdat al wat voorblad is al die onbelangrike nuus verkondig soos Kreuns Jordaan se kammakastige geveg met die Koolslaai-broers se AIG (Afrikaans-is-Getoor)konserte. (Hy het darem lekker op sy moer gekry in die hof, arme Kreuns, sy neus ruik seker Soos Bloed). En so ploeter die jong redakteurtjies vandeesweek voort met allerhande onbenullige hoofartikels soos Loftus se Lieﬂing se sielsmoegheid oor sy faait met die eksvrou oor, onder andere, die ongemagtigde foto’s van sy nou, ongehude tweeling. Verder is die voorblaaie vol van onbe-

langrike sake soos staatskapings, openbare beskerming, korrupsie, resessies, negatiewe ekonomiese groei, swak wisselkoerse, hoër inﬂasie, hashtagallesmustfall, plaasmoorde, ‘n onkapabele Nasionale Vervolgings Afslag en Valke sonder vere. Vlieg kan nie verstaan dat die hoofberig van die afgelope Sondag se Rapport oor die land se sake op bladsy vier verskyn het nie. Bevestig net Vlieg se bekommernis oor hierdie spul jong, onervare redakteurtjies! Daar word toe berig van ene Kebby Maphatsoe, blykbaar adjunkminister van belediging en militante wettterhane en opgeleide Umkhonto we Sizwe kok in die ou bedeling, se oordeelsfoutjie in ‘n hotelkamer saam met ‘n “yellow bones” metgesel. Blykbaar het Tweeter, Twietter, Piet-my-vrou of is dit Twitter gegons oor die naakfoto van die agbare minister waar hy in sy Adamsgewaad koerant lees na hul manewales.

Daar is die wat verbaas was dat hy kan lees, maar op ‘n ernstiger noot het dit die agbare minister darem baie ontstel. Vlieg moet hier byvoeg dat die minister die juisheid van die foto nooit bevestig of ontken het nie, wat opVliegself verdag voorkom. Die agbare minister se indiskresie is ook nou nie juis iets wat V.I. (Vlieg’s Insiens) ‘n ervare redakteur na die voorblad sou blaai nie, dit is mos maar gebruiklik in verskeie ministeries en presidensies, maar die kommentaar van die minister wel. “Ek is ‘n Christen met Christelike beginsels”, was die minister se verweer, en verder hoe sy arme vrou en opgeskote dogter ontstel is deur die berigte dat hulle selfs berading moet ontvang. Waarop Vlieg net weer wil benadruk dat hy liewer Sondae laat lê! As dit die Christendom is, weet Vlieg nie meer waar hy inpas nie!

A cowrageous effort An elderly Brahman cow was saved from a watery grave by three fishermen on Saturday morning. Elizma Jansen van Vuuren and two of her friends, JJ Fritz and Wayne Venter were out fishing at the Tzaneen dam on the property of Visagie Sawmills when they spotted movement near the riverbank and went to investigate. “We were heading back home after a morning out at the dam when we spotted a white object splashing around near the edge of the water. As we came closer we noticed the cow which had managed to get herself stuck in the mud. She looked to have been there quite a while and seemed exhausted from her struggle for freedom,” explained Janse van Vuuren. Her two friends jumped into the river and attempted to free the cow from the mud, but to no avail. “While the boys tried to keep the cow’s head out of the mud, I phoned a member of our community watch to ask for assistance and a while later members from the SPCA arrived on the scene.” After more than an hour’s struggle to free the animal it became apparent that more help was needed. Ellie Potgieter, inspector at the SPCA phoned the property owner, Ruan Visagie and requested the help of one his forklifts. “A Brahman can weigh upwards of 750 kilogrammes and when in distress an animal that size can become a danger to itself and anyone attempting to come close enough to help it. We knew we would need something big if we were going to save her.” Ruan Vorster dispatched one of his forklifts and driver

to the scene. An industrial strap was fastened around the animal and rigged to the prongs of the forklift. Slowly, with the help of the two men guiding the animal, the team managed to raise her out of the mud safely. “She was exhausted and slightly bewildered when we freed her, but after a few minutes laying on the ground she ﬁnally stood up, shook some of the mud from her hooves and strolled back to join the rest of the herd grazing nearby,” said Potgieter.

“I think that her pride suﬀered more than her ailing health as her entire herd stood watching the drama unfold!” It is still not certain who the cow belonged to, but according to Ruan Visagie, the animal is not theirs. “I believe that it may be the property of one of the farmers from the trust areas around our property, but it certainly was not ours.”

Fun night held in the village Haenertsburg turned into a Halloween fest for adults and children on Friday night. Evergreen Montessori founder, Ms Samantha Armbruster, organized a trick-and-treat for the kiddies and they traipsed to get their treats at the nearby Garden Cottages with much excitement. Mother Sarah Hillary from Cheerio Gardens moaned, “I’m now waiting for my son’s sugar high.” Indeed one quarter of all sweets sold annually in the USA is bought for Halloween. Evergreen Montessori hired the Rotary Haenertsburg premises for the occasion. Inside Rotarians manned

their bar and Armbruster put up a delightful haunted house with animatronics. These animatronics, bought in Johannesburg, are the latest technique of making life-like robots. There was also an evening of adult dress up fun at the Iron Crown Pub & Bistro. Mr Damon Nortje won first prize for his outstanding mask. The mask was made using masking tape, toilet paper and prit. Although frowned upon in certain circles, the modern celebration is far less sinister than its Celtic origins which date back 2 000 years to the festival of Samhain. The Europeans of that era, celebrated their New Year on the first day of November which marked the end of the summer harvest and ushered in the start of winter. European winters are notoriously harsh and in ancient traditions was closely associated with death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. Times are tough and the rising fuel prices are making things a little tougher than usual. That, along with the ministry’s claims that the average South African can live comfortably on R750 a month income, we compiled this survival guide for dummies. 1. Quit smoking – you’ll save around R700 a month. 2. Drive an old car – they’re easy to fix and generally low on maintenance. 3. Stop having kids. We already have 7 billion. And, guess what? They’re expensive. 4. Ride a bike or walk instead of driving everywhere. 5. Learn how to fix things by reading books or watching Youtube tutorials. 6. Drink at home – it’s cheaper and you won’t fall off your bicycle. 7. Avoid injuring yourself or getting sick 8. Preventable expenses include STD’s, abortions, lung cancer, head injuries, speeding tickets, and cirrhosis of the liver. 9. Cancel DSTV – there isn’t really anything to watch anyways and that includes the rugby. 10. Do people favours. It’s called Cooperation. Its how the world worked before money. They will return the favour, or someone will. Basically just be a better human. We have become so fixated on keeping up with the Jones’ that we have lost track of the basics we need to make our own life and that of an entire community, so much easier. We created most of the problems that weigh us down and then sulk because nobody else wants to help us make them go away. Boohoo.

Die enigste ding wat dan belangrik gaan wees is: “As jy met jou mond bely het dat Jesus die Here is, en met jou hart glo dat God Hom uit die dood opgewek het, sal jy gered word” (Romeine 10:9).

Selema workers down tools

A wage dispute at Selema Construction and Plant Hire halted all waste management services in the Nkowankowa area on Tuesday. The company is contracted by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) to handle waste management in that area. South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) members at Selema, under the Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) downed tools on Tuesday due to an unresolved dispute during wage negotiations. The group claimed that their wages don’t comply with industry standards within the cleaning sector and their overtime, including public holidays, were not being paid. In what appears to have become an all too familiar complaint in this sector, the workers also claimed that they are not issued with personal protective clothing or uniforms. They vowed to continue with their strike action until Selema agrees to address their grievances. Satawu’s union representative, Makgatho Makgatho, said Selema Plant Hire had refused to bargain with them. “We took them (Selema Construction and Plant Hire) to the Commission for Conciliation, Meditation and Arbitration (CCMA) because they don’t comply with the determination standards of the cleaning sector in terms of wages, but they put it clear that they won’t negotiate with us,” Makgatho said. Bulletin spoke to Selema CEO, Makweya Molefe, who said in his defense that the demands by the workers cannot be met due to budgetary constraints. “The workers are insisting on bargaining for a raise in their wages and my contract with the municipality doesn’t allow that.” At the time of going to print no resolution to the dispute had yet been tabled. As part of the centre’s anniversary celebrations, hundreds of locals crowded the massive parking lot to partake in the excitement of dance competitions, trolley chases and various promotional give-aways. Centre manager, Orry Mbedzi, said in her address to the masses that the centre stands as a magical place for many of the locals and that through their support the popular venue will remain a destination of choice for convenience shopping in the years to come.

At the heart of the centre stands a large clock as a symbol of the community’s struggle for the portion of land upon which the plaza now stands. The clock was placed there by developer, John McCormick, on request of then Chief Councillor of the Bakgaga ba Maake community, Mack Maake. The clock’s placement aligns perfectly with the centre of the Royal Kraal. In his address to the community during the festivities, Bakgaga Community Trust Chairperson, Mr George Ramodike, placed emphasis on the re-

sponsibility of individuals to ensure safety and security at the centre. “I want to encourage people present today to continue to be jealous of the Plaza. I appeal to you to protect the centre since it is our nearest town we must stand united as a community and ﬁght crime in the centre. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held its annual blood donation competition and this year it was the grade 4 TE class at Laerskool Tzaneen Primary who took first place. The 27 brave young donors did their part to help with the blood service’s current shortfall and in exchange were rewarded with 15 brand new chess sets. The young chess masters wasted no time in setting up the pieces and getting the blood flow back to their craniums. “Thank you miss Dottie Pinn,” they said in unison. In addition they expressed their gratitude to the parents and fellow students who all chipped in and sat down for a donation on the day. “These chess sets mean a lot to the youngsters and we will be putting them to good use in the days to come. Donating blood is an important part of helping our community and that, above all else, is what defines a true Larrie,” said Ms Ula Schoeman of Laerskool Tzaneen Primary. — Joe Dreyer

drama- en moderne dansklasse, waar sy ook goed presteer. By die dansafdeling word Hayley Stephenson in graad 11 aangewys as die beste moderne danser, terwyl Chris Bill, ook in graad 11, die trofee verower vir die beste kontemporêre danser. Die instrumentaliste staan ook geen tree agteruit nie en verdien Angie Nel in graad 12 ‘n trofee vir haar graad 7 ALMSA klaviereksamen, wat sy met sukses afgelê het. Janco Blignaut (graad 9), bewys sy meesterskap met die klawers tydens die graad 6 UNISA-klaviereksamen. Kieran Albertus is ‘n kitaarspeler om

dop te hou - hy het ook sy UNISA graad 1 eksamen geslaag. Op vokale gebied word Danzi Ivy aangewys as die mees verdienstelike sanger, en Anize Basson is die topkunstenaar in die kunsstudio. Die beste toneelspelers is ook vereer: Bernice Cronjé in graad 12 vir haar prestasies by die Tzaneen Eisteddfod en Lize Craﬀord in graad 11 vir haar uitsonderlike toneelspel en improvisasie. Met groot entoesiasme en opgewondenheid het pa en seun hul tent opgeslaan en toe kon die seuns die terrein ontdek en sommer lekker baljaar. Merensky’s Lowveld medal harvest

White River played host to 21 schools during the JJJ Prestige Athletics Meet at Rob Ferreira High School this past weekend. One of those schools was Tzaneen’s very own Merensky who were among the underdogs at an event where Nelspruit High and the hosts, Rob Ferreira, were clear favourites. The event itself is named after one of Rob Ferreira’s past headmasters, Mr JJJ van Rensburg, and is the biggest pre-season athletics meeting in Mpumalanga. Only the number one athlete of every school in a specific discipline is invited to compete resulting in top quality track and field events televised nationally. The competition was fierce as the best-of-the-best vied for gold and the honour of recording their names in the record books. Three of those record slots are now

painted blue with the names of Thato Shokane, Anri McLean and the relay team of Sancha van Niekerk and Simoné van den Bergh. These Plasies shattered not only their personal bests, but the best of the Lowveld’s oﬀering. Thato Shokane bettered the boys u/15 triple jump record with his distance of 12,45m while middle distance athlete, Anri McLean – aged 16, improved the existing girls u/19 1500m record in a time of 05:30:22. In an adrenaline fuelled 2x200m relay event the duo of Van Niekerk and Van den Bergh streaked into the record books in 54:56 seconds. Van Niekerk would also take home the trophy for Best Senior Girls Short Distance Athlete on the day. The following athletes recorded great ABSA table ratings of more than 800, this early in the season: Xihlovo Shibamba (boys, u.14, long jump, 965 points and 200m, 830 points), Thato Shokane (boys, u.15, triple jump, 902 points), Vutomi Mkhabele (boys, u.15, 100m, 902 points and 200m, 864 points), Ignatius Stucki (boys,

u.14, 100m, 875 points), Noko Malatji (boys, u.19, 100m, 841 points), Dillon de Lange (boys, u.15, javelin, 838 points), Revan Beukes (boys, u.15, high jump, 823 points), Reuben Corono (boys, u.16, 200m, 804 points) and Lourentia van Dyk (girls, u.15, high jump, 812 points). Rugby helps God’s Haven Letaba Rugby Club hosted a fundraising tournament this past weekend in aid of God’s Haven and managed to raise a staggering R5 020 through ticket sales at the gates. Despite the blistering heat as a result of the prophesised heat wave, Saturday saw a community united through their love of one of the country’s most revered sports. The morning kicked oﬀ with some top notch Primary school rugby which was enough to set the table for a feast of excitement as the crowds awaited the afternoon games between Letaba and Letsitele. The ﬁrst of the afternoon’s games was a long awaited clash between the young stal-

lions of the Letaba second team and the Old Boys comprising of veteran tuskers from the club’s glory days. It was an interesting battle of age and experience versus youthful ambition and saw the old boys put up a strong fight against their younger, fitter opponents. In the end, however it was the veterans who proved that skill far outweighs speed and strength as they headed to the breaches as champions. At 16:15 the battle of the first teams kicked off. The long-standing rivalry between Letaba and Letsitele made for an explosive game which saw try after try exchanged between the hosts and

Oubal ruik daai rot wat neef Divvie destyds uit sy hoed getrek het, en hy ruik na PK neef Allister wil voorgee dat Franco nie daar is as ‘n mentor vir Mzwandile Stokman nie! Maar in die GASK** het neef Franco verlede week gevra dat ons rakbiepubliek ‘n bietjie meer positief moet wees. Oubal probeer, neef, hy probeer, maar dis moeilik. Want eerstens was die OP Kings verlede week in die hof vir hulle likwidasiesaak. Ons weet egter nie veel van wat daar gebeur het nie, behalwe dat ‘n paar individue heel waarskynlik
