Leonard Cohen was V.I. “Hallelujah” (“Various Positions” Version) Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord

I don’t even know the name But if I did, well really, what’s it to you? There’s a blaze of light In every word It doesn’t matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn’t much I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I’ll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah But you don’t really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah You say I took the name in vain

It explains that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value.”

Cycad dispute turns sour A rental dispute between two men from Tzaneen has turned ugly. Four weeks ago Bulletin reported on the case of a transporter who was arrested for being in possession of alleged stolen cycad plants. In that instance the driver was arrested and a prominent Polokwane businessman implicated in the theft. The plaintiff, Mr Petrus Botes reported the matter to the Tzaneen SAPS and a case of theft was opened. It later emerged that the cycads were removed from the property of Mr Jacques Coetzee, the landlord at Lushof plot 78 where Botes was renting. This followed a dispute between the two men which made its rounds at the Rental Tribunal in June this year before being heard by the Polokwane High Court for the second time,

in October. The Tribunal ruled in favour of Coetzee and their ruling was contested by Botes who lodged a formal appeal. The High Court judge Ndlokovane postponed the application by Coetzee for an urgent eviction notice and ordered that he pay wasted costs of the day. The problems started in September 2015 after a one-year lease agreement between the two parties had lapsed and was replaced by a verbal arrangement in which it was agreed that Botes will continue to rent the property from Coetzee at a monthly rate of R4 000. The property rented by Botes was adjacent to the property of Coetzee’s parents and shared an electrical connection. The property was later sub-divided and Coetzee allegedly applied for a separate electrical connection at the GTM which had still not been implemented.

According to Coetzee he approached the Rental Tribunal after Botes refused to continue paying rent when he put the plot up for sale. Botes claimed that this was because he was being charged for electricity usage from an illegal connection and that the verbal agreement between himself and Coetzee had been breached. The matter has since escalated and resulted in Botes’ property being attached and removed from his home at Lushof allegedly in his absence. Botes has laid charges of theft against the Coetzee’s in this regard. “It would seem as though the police are dragging their feet in their investigations as both cases of theft are still being investigated and I have come no closer to a resolution or having my belongings returned to me,” said Botes.

In his defence Coetzee said that he followed the law and acted entirely according to his rights to have a non-paying tenant evicted. “I cannot understand how this could be investigated as theft when I was personally given the go ahead to remove the plants by Brig Thomas Shingange of Tzaneen SAPS. I have all of this on record. He (Shingange) said I have the right to look after my interests and may put Petrus’ things in storage. The plants could not be put into a garage as they are living organisms, so I had them stored at a friend’s place,” Coetzee alleged. Bulletin is in possession of a number of documents received from both parties in this regard and will continue the investigation into the matter as it unfolds. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

A very close call

An RCL Foods transport truck came to a grinding halt mere metres from a business’ admin block in Letsitele on Wednesday afternoon. The fully loaded truck overturned and skid off the road into the premises of Houers Korporatief, destroying a number of shaded parking spaces before finally coming to a standstill. The truck was transporting chicken feed from the RCL Foods depot in Letsitele. “It was quite daunting really,” explained Wimpie Mostert, manager at Houers Korporatief. “We heard tyres screech, a loud crash and then the horrible sound of

steel scraping over concrete. When we looked out of the window we saw this massive truck sliding by.” The accident occurred at around 12:15 and there were no injuries. The driver of the truck escaped with some minor scratches and was treated for shock. Sonco towing services removed the truck after the clean-up operation later that afternoon. The cause of the accident was not known at the time of going to print and RCL Foods could not be reached for comment. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Superb getaway on offer Glenogle Farm, outside Haenertsburg, has recently joined the ranks of up-market accommodation. Camera-shy Ms Glenda Hancock (51) and her investment banker husband David bought the property in 2012. They left the tenants in the main house and built a weekend cottage with a view of the existing dam. David now keeps the dam immaculate and replenishes the trout stock regularly. Their youngest son, Tom, wanted to live in the country rather than in Johannesburg and go to Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen. So they sold their big city home, bought a smaller one and came to their no-longer-weekend cottage just over a year ago. David splits his work between Johannesburg and Glenogle Farm. Their other son Matthew, who looks set to follow in his father’s footsteps, is studying at home. He’s at the University of Pretoria but has come home because exams were postponed due to ongoing student unrest. Glenda, born in Durban, obtained her BSc in Biology at the University of Natal, Durban. She taught there, moved

to Johannesburg when she married, and stayed involved in science related fields. The couple knew the Haenertsburg area as they had a country property near Clearwater Cove that they sold in 2007. They missed their country life and five years later bought Glenogle Farm. Glenda unleashed her passion for buildings, antiques and interior decorating and set about supervising two new guest cottages on Glenogle Farm. She employed local architect Robin McIntosh for one and a Johannesburg professional for the other. The old staff quarters were converted into stables for their three horses. New quarters were built elsewhere. Following the equine theme the Hancocks tucked the first guest house, called The Stables, in between. As The Stables was doing so well, Glenda decided to build the ultimate in romance and privacy and The Loft was born two months ago. The Loft is set in a pine forest and is a stone’s throw away from the pristine dam with its

wooden platform and deck. Glenda has a natural eye for interior decorating and has files and files of designs from magazines and other sources. However, she doesn’t make a move without consulting and checking with Johannesburg designer Arianne Forrester, known professionally as Zanne. The ruins of the original house, owned by recluse Lily Lake who died in her 90s, have been left. The Stables can take a maximum of four guests and The Loft is for a couple. The attention to detail, the lighting, the huge windows letting in the pine forest, the colourful antique Persian carpets, the convenient and open shelves in the kitchen and the sensible shower areas that eliminate those awkward step-ins, all make for an exquisite getaway. — Sue Ettmayr sue.ettmayr@gmail.com

Our Opinion Lest we forget Driving through Modjadji just the other day it dawned on me how easily we forget the history of things. I noticed the mud and thatch houses, the kraals with the cattle and even one or two traditional healers in their buckskin and loincloths. Our driver explained how things work there in the villages. He said that if someone is caught stealing, the community would arrest the suspect, bring him before the chief of the village and there his fate would be decided. Should the chieftain not reach an adequate verdict, the suspect would be brought before the king. “You see,” he said. “We black people have different laws and ways of doing things than our white brothers.” Interesting. But it is not at all the truth – at least not the whole truth, at least not anymore. We forget that just a few hundred years ago our own ancestors lived in villages made of clay and thatch. We had chieftains and kings – we had mob justice and ritual slayings. We had foreigners entering our lands and forcing us under their rule. We fought, many died, and we gained our independence. I explained to our driver that there was a time not too long ago that my own ancestors worshipped a pantheon of gods including a host of weather deities like Thor, Ægir, Baldur and Freya. Looking back we scoff at those belief systems. My ancestors were Vikings. Savages in the eyes of the French and British because of their lack of “education” and inability to speak, read or write English or French. They were seen as barbarians because of their customs and belief systems, yet the Vikings were farmers – people of the soil. Sound familiar? The point is that it took our people a good number of centuries to get to the point where we are now with our infrastructure, technology and so-called etiquette. Should we not try and be a little more understanding to the ways of those who have only recently been introduced to this “modern” way of life? If it took our ancestors a few centuries to get to where we are today, surely it must be a little inconsiderate to expect the same results in just a few decades? #applesdontfall

Ek sal graag wil hê hy moet by ons kom bly”. “Alles in die haak my seun, het sy ma geantwoord, hy klink na ‘n baie dapper man. Hy kan vir so ‘n rukkie by ons kom bly”. “Ma verstaan nie. Ek wil hê hy moet by ons kom inwoon”. “Dis alles reg, my seun. Hy is in ‘n baie slegte toestand!”. “My seun, jy is onrealisties. Nee, as ek weer daaroor dink...is my antwoord nee. Kom jy net huis toe!”. ‘n Verslonsde man... is ‘n boemelaar. Straatkinders...is gomsnuiwers!

Let he without sin cast the first stone A church group was attacked inside their church building during morning service on Sunday. The incident happened at a village outside Polokwane. It is believed that members of the Divine Church congregation arrived at the site from Burgersfort to celebrate the opening of their own church. Upon arrival they found the members of another church inside the building and a fight immediately ensued. The members of the two congregations pelted one another with rocks and vehicles were set alight. The Divine Churchers wreaked havoc before departing and a number of cars were completely destroyed in the process. No arrests had been made at the time of going to print and police investigations have been underway. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Fire destroys classrooms A mysterious fire destroyed parts of a school in Maake on Wednesday morning. According to the police reports a security guard stationed at the Shiluvane Primary School grounds alerted the headmaster of a fire that had started in one of the classrooms. Upon his arrival at the school the fire had already destroyed two classrooms and two mobile classrooms. No injuries or fatalities were reported and

the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Police are investigating the possibility of arson and have subsequently launched a manhnt for the suspected arsonists. “Anyone with information about the incident should please contact Lt Col Cecil Machimana on 072 532 1725 or the Maake Police station on 015 355 8358. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

A man arrested for assault now faces murder charges after the body of a woman was found in the bushes near Phalaborwa this week. The 35-year old Victor Malatji appeared in the Namakgale Magistrate’s court on Wednesday morning for the new charges. His case was postponed to the end of this month pending further investigations. He remains in custody without the option for bail. Malatji was previously arrested in Lulekani, outside Phalaborwa, on two separate incidents of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and received six years in prison. He was released after serving his sentence. This past weekend the police in the Namak-

gale area received a missing person’s report. A woman who was last seen with her husband (Malatji), had not returned home. Following an intensive search, police found her body hidden in among the bushes outside Namakgale. The body had started decomposing and the official police statement claims that no visible marks or wounds were noticeable on the corpse and a post-mortem will be conducted. At the time of going to print the motive for the alleged killing was not established, but police are not ruling out a case of domestic violence. — Joe Dreyer

The integrity of the SAPS holding cells in Limpopo has come under the spotlight this week with two separate instances of escape being reported. The two cases were reported in Phalaborwa and Musina respectively. According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the escapes are cause for concern and have received urgent attention. “We are aware of the possible problem in the holding cells and we are looking into it.” In Phalaborwa, three convicted serial rapists overpowered the guard who was serving them dinner and broke out of the holding cells. They evaded capture for two days before two of them were killed in Tzaneen on Sunday night. They were traced to the infamous Talana hostel in Tzaneen and police units were sent to investigate. Upon their arrival at the hostile, one of the suspects opened fire and a gun battle ensued as the officers retaliated. Papiki Mashapo (23) was killed in the fire fight and a stolen firearm recovered off his body. His accomplice, Thomas Maowasha (23) was later discovered dead in the bushes

a while away from the scene. He had multiple stab wounds on his body and it is believed that he was killed by an unknown assailant. The third escapee, Benny Mathaba (24) was finally rearrested yesterday after a tip off that he was hiding out in Phalaborwa. He will appear in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s court on a charge of escaping from lawful custody today. “Although the last of the escapees has now been rearrested, our investigations are still continuing to get to the bottom of the matter,” Ngoepe said. In the Musina case five awaiting trial prisoners escaped custody on Tuesday by removing bricks out of a wall in the Police station yard. All five men are Zimbabwean nationals. They were identified as Bruce Hungwane (26) who was arrested for rape, John Ndlovu (23) arrested for murder, Samuel Tawanda (21) arrested robbery and two 18-year old boys who were arrested for theft. One of the men has since been rearrested. — Joe Dreyer

A Vossie in Vietnam A Ben Vorster alumna, Erika Visser, is the embodiment of the “smalltown girl makes it big” fairy tale, but with a rather remarkable twist. Since her graduation from Ben Vorster high school way back in 2000, Erika has never stopped studying. In fact, she has not only continued with her studies in various fields after receiving Bachelors of Science in Physiology in 2005, but has also taken up a teacher’s position at two schools in Vietnam, a lecturer’s post at the University of Hanoi and offers training in inter-cultural relations for Panasonic in Osaka, Japan. In 2006 she earned her Honours Degree in Pharmacology at the Universi-

Wheels for Altus update

ty of Pretoria and earlier this year she completed her MBA at the Universty of New Castle in Australia. Erika and her husband, John, currently live in Hanoi, Vietnam after moving from Singapore where they lived for a while after leaving Sydney. An avid supporter of the notion that one should remain teachable, this Tzaneen export has plans to continue her studies in the new year. “We are very proud of you Erika and we wish you only the best for the future,” was the message from the teaching staff at Ben Vorster. — Joe Dreyer

Through the assistance of the Tzaneen community a total of R30 000 has been collected in aid of Altus Pelser, the boy born with Spina Bifida. “We are delighted to announce that we have made the deposit and the wheelchair for Altus has been ordered. Thank you very much for the support during this campaign,” said Chrizel du Plessis. The draw for the weekend getaway to the ATKV Eiland resort will take place on 25th November.

Judokas land gold As with most martial arts, Judo is a sport mostly frowned upon in South African society as somewhat exotic with no place in a nation predominantly guided by rugby and soccer culture.

But Judo, or more precisely its history, is rich in discipline and culture. The art was born in Japan, and it is now known around the world as an Olympic sport. Judo was established in 1882 by combining jujitsu, a form of wrestling, with mental discipline. “Those who practice this ancient art reap the benefits of increased confidence and mental acuity, especially in young children,” said Tzaneen Judo club Sensei, Ivan Steyn. “We start with youngsters from the age of sixyears old and the feedback from parents in the community has been nothing but positive.” On the weekend of 22 October this year, Tzaneen Judo club travelled to Mbombela in Mpumalanga to compete in a martial arts competition. Some of the judokas performed exceptionally well and returned home with a significant medal haul. Hunter Briers earned herself a first place

in the girls u/24kg category for the age group 5-7 years and Callie Buitendag managed a great second place in the boys u/25kg for the age group 5-7 years. Morné Huysamen took third spot on the podium in boys u/27kg for the age group 7-9 years and Hanno Stassen and Nic de Beer both won their category matches for the age group 9-11 years. Normane Mnisi and Frank Dyason took top honours in the age group 14-16 years for girls u/66kg and boys u/50kg respectively while Ruan Huysamen earned second place in boys u/35kg for the age group 9-11 years. “I am extremely proud of my judokas’ performances and positive that they will all have a long and exciting career ahead of them in the sport. Our hard work and dedication has paid off and for that, we are all equally thankful,” said Steyn. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Dié sal by jou stop en ‘n man sal afklim en hom self aan jou voorstel as Du Plessis.

Dít, sê Oupa Bekker, was nuus waaroor jy vir jare nadat Du Plessis gehang is kon praat!

Oubal groet. .................................................. “Whether you’re a newspaper journalist, a lawyer, a doctor, you have to organise your thoughts.” – Frederick Wiseman
