Construction on the Tzaneen dam’s wall has started with the testing of soil samples. To the left of the image (the front side of the dam wall facing Tzaneen), construction workers conduct tests on the soil that was retrieved from the banks of the dam (on the right side of the image). According to one of the land surveyors onsite, the plan is to raise the wall by three metres and the soil is being put through compaction

tests to determine whether it will hold. “If the soil cracks then we know we cannot build with it,” he said. The slope of the wall will stretch down to the edge of the current waterline (noticeable at the far right of the image). The idea behind this project is to increase the dam’s catchment area. The dam wall is a very popular attraction to local walkers who are seen every afternoon strolling along the one and a half kilometre

News of the intended refurbishing of the now derelict Letaba Boulevard building in downtown Tzaneen has some engineers raising red flags. According to one structural engineer who spoke to Bulletin this week, the building should be razed to the ground and an entirely new structure erected in its place. “Those concrete pillars have been left naked to the elements for roughly three years now which makes them structurally unsound. To build on top of those structures would not only be against the law, but could have catastrophic consequences in the future,” the source said. Bulletin has investigated the matter and issued an official inquiry to the property owner. A detailed report will follow in next week’s edition.
Altus Pelser will get his wheels thanks to the support of the Tzaneen community who opened their hearts to the plight of this young man. In just two weeks enough funds were raised to make the down payment on the custom wheelchair through the sale of raffle tickets. Altus, in the pres-
ence of a group of anxious hopefuls, made the draw for the grand prize of a weekend away for four people at the ATKV Eiland Resort. The lucky winner was Ms Halima Omar of Tzaneen. “Thank you so much for your support, enjoy the weekend with your loved ones Halima,” said mom Maryke.

In daardie dae sou

Poachers’ nights are numbered African Blue Hounds, off lead and fitted with GPS collars, are being trained to track and “tree” poachers at night. One of the biggest problems has been that most poachers carry out their nefarious deeds at night when wildlife is unprotected. Craig Coppen (45) from Tzaneen has been a professional hunter and was also involved in anti-poaching with the SANDF in the tracker dog unit in the Kruger National Park. He has now joined forces with his brother Andre to form a licensed security company, with a license for armed reaction called Canine Security. Theunis Botha also from Tzaneen, in association with Canine Security, has been breeding hunting dogs for decades. The African Blue, specifically bred for African conditions, comes from the Blue Tick Coonhound in the USA. It was bred to “tree” raccoons and other prey. Believed to have originated from Louisiana the Blue Tick Coonhound was bred from the English Foxhound, Cur, and Bleu Gascogne French Hound. Theunis has been selective to get the best genetic mix into the African Blue Hounds. Craig says African Blues are ex-
cellent tracker hounds and able to handle the African heat. They have short hair, excellent noses, harder and bigger feet than any other breed and can cover long distances. Craig also trains Belgian Malinois and Bloodhounds. Belgian Malinois get sore feet after 5 kms and struggle in the heat. However they make good attack dogs. Bloodhounds don’t have endurance in the heat but

Craig says breeding and training takes time and money. To import a hound with these working traits costs €15,000. It takes him two years to train African Blues. He trains them six days a week for four to six hours a day and he himself imported the costly Garmin GPS collars from the USA. Canine Security also protects more than a dozen farm orchards with guards in Politsi and Letsitele. Together with Northern Security they caught the main fish poacher who had been operating in these areas for months. Besides trained permanent staff and dogs, Canine Security will introduce a monitoring unit to fit on pumps, transformers and solar panels. The moment these items are touched an sms is sent to a central spot. Then Canine Security does the reaction. — Sue Ettmayr

Gunmen rob Ofcolaco staff A security guard was hospitalized on Wednesday morning following a robbery at a fuelling station in Ofcolaco just outside Letsitele. The incident took place at the fuelling station in the Ofcolaco Business Centre at around 02:15 that morning. According to witness statements, two suspects arrived at the centre in a white Toyota bakkie. They walked into the fuelling station and fired at which point one of the men fired a round from his firearm. The petrol attendants on duty at the time ran into the office building to seek shelter. The centre’s security guard came to investigate and the suspect opened fire on him, wounding him in the leg.
One of the staff members managed to press the panic button before the two suspects entered the building and security personnel were activated along with SAPS units from Maake. The suspects robbed the attendants of their personal belongings and fled the scene. CCTV footage of the attackers has been circulated and police investigations are underway. Any person with information that could lead to the arrest of the individuals should contact the Maake Police Station or Lt Col Mashimane on 072-532-1725. At the time of going to print it was reported that the security guard is recovering in the Sekororo hospital. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Cash heists on the rise Another cash-in-transit vehicle was hit by a gang of armed men this week. A Fidelity money truck was travelling on the R71 between Letsitele and Bush Valley when it was forced off the road by a white Toyota Fortuner and a white VW Golf 7. The occupants of the vehicle were armed with assault rifles and opened fire
on the truck forcing its occupants to surrender. During the fire fight the driver of the truck was wounded in his arm. The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money. This latest heist raised some concerns among the locals who asked some pertinent questions. Bulletin received information that the po-
lice were meant to have been in that area at the time of the heist as they had an appointment on a farm in the area. The police reportedly never honoured their appointment. At the time of going to print no arrest had been made and investigations are still continuing. — Joe Dreyer: joe@bulletin.us.com

Block 5 team invited to Uganda Award-winning television news and current affairs producer, video journalist and documentary filmmaker, Molatelo Mainetje (41) is among the filmmakers invited to attend the seven-day Nile’s Diaspora International Film Festival in Fort Portal, Uganda. The festival runs from 17 to 23 December and is said to be a platform for the African artists and the African Diaspora industry professionals with meaningful opportunities to network, interact and engage in progressive dialogue. Mainetje is a self-proclaimed social justice activist who has an insatiable love for the art of film and using that love to highlight the injustices and struggles of many of South Africa’s rural communities. She’s the winner of 2007 United Nations Media Peace Award, TV News category and has produced, written, directed and edited several documentary films both locally and internationally. She is best known for two of her documentaries entitled “Womb-man” and most recently “Block 5”. Mainetje said the documentary Block 5 was born from the inspiration she drew from attending
festivals and markets. “I listened to people talking about how

gles my people go through, just to get water.” The idea for the film came to her last year July when she was home following the passing of her father. She saw their neighbor, Dipuo, walking into their home with a silver kettle in her hands. “I didn’t take notice of what she came to do. I asked her what she came to do. She started explaining how she got home from work, there was not even a drop of water to drink.” The documentary was shot and produced by the young trainees at her film school in the area. “I literally remotely directed the rest of the production from Johannesburg, constantly on the phone with the team and directing them what to do, and how to do it. They did a sterling job.” Block 5 was filmed with a generation of cameras that most filmmakers don’t use anymore. They could not afford to use state of the art equipment but it was the nature of the story that made Block 5 to be what it is. So far, the documentary screened locally at the Mzansi Women’s Film Festival and at KwaZulu-Natal’s Ugu Film Festival. “Nile’s Diaspora International Film Festival would be the film’s international premiere, and my team’s first festival attendance on the continent. I’m too excited about this development,” Mainetje concluded. — Joe Dreyer and Phidelia Rikhotso

Our Opinion
The Message
Doom(sday) Prophet I think a general conversation between a newspaper editor and his son in the very near future surrounding the topic of religion would possibly start by highlighting the toxicity of extremism. And to illustrate this point, the newspaper editor would possibly start with the story of Mount Zion General Assembly “prophet” Lethebo Rabalago of Polokwane. Now this guy took “faith” a little too far and had his followers believe that by spraying them full in the face with a commercial insecticide the Holy Spirit would rid them of addiction, adultery, cancer and even AIDS. It sparked an outcry among believers of other denominations who called it ridiculous because “God gave you common sense” and the man is obviously “a false prophet.” Prophet Rabalogo defended the claims saying that if your faith was strong enough then you should believe that God can use anything to cure you of any ailment no matter how serious. “God is almighty and we want to show people that He can truly do anything.” It is a bit of a conundrum. A paradox if you will.

This newspaper editor is by no means as much of a rugby expert as his favourite grumpy commentator, but he does know a thing or two about people. And it is his humble opinion that the people are a little more than perturbed by the current state of SA Rugby. Yes, he understands that rugby is such a big part of the South African culture that every other sporting achievement is considered dull in comparison - and that any man who doesn’t watch the games over weekends is considered equally dull. But, rugby, in this young newsman’s opinion, has been receiving way too much credit over the years and it’s about time the “culture” experiences a paradigm shift. Did you know that eleven local archers were just crowned as the best in the country for the third time in four years? Does it matter to anybody that we have local swimmers, gymnasts, athletes and hockey players who rank among the best in the world? Looking at the current state of affairs in SA Rugby I am reminded of a certain school’s rugby coach who was known for referring to boys who did not want to play rugby as “stokkie moffies” because they preferred hockey. I find it suddenly very amusing. Lighten up a little, rugby is not dead. Unlike SA Cricket, SA Rowing, SA Archery and SA Swimming which needs better media coverage, rugby only needs better coaches, better players and better management. But that’s just my opinion.
Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church The Lord is with you! Marriage is seen as a union between two people and there are many types of marriage: Civil Union, Traditional/Tribal, Non-Christian and of course Christian Marriage. Although I can go into describing all of these I want to concentrate on Christian marriage. When two people fall in love it often becomes their desire to unite in marriage to continue to be with each other legally. However, it has become customary to live together without being married, I believe this is not what God wants of us, but most Churches have come to accept this as a norm. Jesus blessed the wedding in Canaan and although many may argue that this was not a Christian marriage, it is commonly known as the first blest marriage by Christ. Christ blesses all Christian marriages. I therefore think that these marriages should be officiated by an ordained priest who is licenced by the Government. However, before the marriage takes place it is of utmost importance that the couple receive counselling in what is involved in a marriage and this I feel should be done by a marriage officer and more importantly, a marriage officer who is a Christian. Often people enter into a union because they are in love and nothing else seems to matter so sometimes these marriages end up in divorce. I am not speaking about marriages that break down because of abuse, be it physical or mental. So the counselling they receive should give them the ground rules and the most important of these are open communication. It has become common practice to have an outdoor wedding under the trees or a gazebo or something similar, but the legal aspects, like signing the register must be done in a building with a roof and walls, a church or a government building as this is laid down by law and if not done the marriage officer can loose his/her licence. Once the legal aspects are completed the blessing can take place elsewhere. I encourage all to take marriage as a serious commitment to one another and not to be entered into lightly. Blessings

Nuwe Rugbyman vir Vossies
In first place on the day was the Mercurius Team consisting of Mr J. Strydom, Mr A. Liversage, Mr N Huysamen and Mr H. Liversage seen here with Stanford Headmaster, Mr C Carolan (left).
Mercurius wins
Stanford Lake College spent the day on the fairways of Tzaneen Country Club as they hosted their annual golf day on the 11th of November.
It was a day full of excitement crowned with fantastic golfing weather which proved positive for the full field of more than 90 players.
Talita hou naam hoog
Second place went to the National driving School team of Mr J. Spaumer, Mr G. Boshoff, Me B. Boshoff and Mr G. Botha. With them in this photo is Mr C Carolan (Headmaster).
Baie geluk, Talita.”

Merensky archers best in SA Merensky was named the top archery school in the country for the third time in four years this month. This follows their participation in the prestigious African Bowhunting Organization’s (ABO) national competition in Pretoria over the weekend of 19 November. Eleven of the finest Merensky archers travelled to the city to take part in what has been described as one of the toughest competitions in the sport. The archers were divided into groups of between four and nine competitors and sent into the field in what is known as a 3-Di event. During this event the shooters aim at mock-animal Dear Mr Editor, This is me, Arthur Ingelsman, writing. I’m doing this on behalf of our regular team talk team. Well, all except Oubal – he knows nothing about this, so kindly keep it that way. I’m sure you’ve received correspondence from Oubal’s special envoy informing you of him taking a sabbatical for the rest of the year, for reasons explained by him, and alluded to in his last column. I can assure you that our team talk last Saturday was not the most pleasant of meetings on the back of this. You could imagine that the happenings in Florence, that birthplace of the Renaissance, was the root cause of the unpleasantness, but far from it. As it is, Oubal said everyone who reads his column with the necessary attention will know that he predicted this sad state of affairs last year when everyone, including your late predecessor, called for Heyneke Meyer’s head. Oubal also spoke eloquantly afterwards, firstly saying that he always wondered what Pres Thabo Mbeki meant when he spoke of the “African Renaissance”, but he now realises that is exactly what we saw in Florence on Saturday. He was also quite perturbed by Allister Coetzee’s post
targets as they would appear in their natural surroundings and are scored based on their grouping on the target. This is slightly more challenging than the traditional archery target shooting as it forces the archers to navigate rocky and often uneven terrain loaded with shrubbery, trees and outcrops which obscure the view. The targets are placed over distances ranging between 13 and 50 meters and archers compete according to draw weight, sex and age. Both of Merensky’s teams claimed podium positions and boasted a host of individual achievements. The second team, consisting of LinMari Theron, Sean Hunt and Dewald Haagner, took third place overall while their first team comprising of Janco Theron, Benèche Jackson, Ryan Jackson and Canell Jackson were crowned tournament champions.
Benèche Jackson, Canell Jackson, Sean Hunt, Ricus Warmenhoven and Schalk Warmenhoven qualified on provincial level and Ryan Jackson, Janco Theron and Dawie Theron each shot national qualifying rounds. Benèche and Ryan Jackson each reached the sought after Protea qualifying score on the day with Benèche earning her National Colours. Dawie Theron received gold in the MBR division. Benèche and Ryan won silver medals in the FY and YMR divisions while Schalk Warmenhoven was awarded bronze in the MSR category. Ryan was also named Limpopo’s Traditional Archer of the Year. — Joe Dreyer
Don’t Sugar Coat! Sincerely, Arthur match speech, especially the part where Allister states that the Boks have a mountain to climb and will have to dig deep. It strikes him, Oubal said, that if you have to climb a mountain and you start by digging a hole, you’re going to climb an even higher mountain from that hole! But back to the team talk. We, as his dearest friends, tried to convince Oubal to continue with his column, but he would have none of it. Not even pointing out that there was a marked improvement in your news content would make him budge. It surfaced that he took umbrage at you appointing him “Hero of the Week” on your editorial page. Firstly, he said, elevating someone to hero status is to set him up for a fall and he is not so blind as not to see that. He also did not take kindly to you calling him grumpy. One man’s grumpyness is another man’s inability to face straight talk and dealing with facts, Oubal said. I would have loved to put the latter part in his Boere-Afrikaans like he normally does with my English, but I’m simply not as good with that. Anyway, it makes no difference as this little
joe@bulletin.us.com
newspaper is English these days, which suits me – Lord Milner full circle, and rightly so I’ll say! But then he really surprised us by relating how Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister of the 1800’s, responded to a question of how it happened that he forged such a good relationship with Queen Victoria. “When I deal with royalty, I apply flattery with a trowel,” Disraeli said, according to Oubal. That’s quite astonishing coming from someone who already admitted that he doesn’t understand Shakespeare! Anyway, Oubal said his appointment as a hero is nothing more than an attempt at flattery. The thing with flattery, he said, is that the person being flattered should be susceptible to it. He, or she in the case of Queen Victoria, should have an ego. And that, Oubal said, he doesn’t have, so he is sort of immune. Flattery is sugar coating, he continued, which is a dangerous ploy. One only has to look at what trouble Faf du Plessis got himself into for sugar coating a cricketball with peppermint saturated spit to understand this, Oubal said. What he finds amusing, though, is that Australia lost a series 2-0 against a peppermint – imagine if they had to face quality fast bowling! Yours Sincerely, Arthur Ingelsman “I give you bitter pills, in sugar coating. The pills are harmless – the poison’s in the sugar.” James St James
