Vlieg maak klaar vir die jaar! Vlieg is moeg. Afgemat. Uitgeput. Kragteloos. Twintig sestien was nie ‘n lekker jaar nie. En nou vir al die afsluitings en toemakings

Bullying leads to a lifestyle change A Tzaneen family of three lost a combined weight of 140 kgs in 18 months. When Ilze Czubora (40) realized her son Andrew, then 11, had turned into an introvert because he was being bullied at school for being obese, she decided to put the family’s eating habits under the Before microscope. Ilze had a hard time at school being overweight. So a lifetime of eating high carbohydrates and low fat had led to this state of affairs. Researching the internet to help Andrew lose weight, Ilze came across a video entitled “Lard Makes you Lean.” This led to her the LCHF (low carb/high fat) lifestyle known as Banting. Together the family changed their lifestyle. They stopped most root vegetables due to high carbs and lack of nutrients. They stopped all grains. They contain the gluten protein which can cause leaky gut syndrome and IBS. They stopped legumes like peas, beans, peanuts and lentils. These contain enzyme inhibitors that bind to minerals in food and prevent absorption. After They stopped all sugar including fruit as it contains fructose. Fructose can lead to non alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes and heart disease. The family began including fresh vegetables and fatty meat into their diet. Andrew now enjoys cooking with his mother and his favourites are meat-ball soup and stir fries. They prepare the vegetables and meat on a Sunday and then cook a daily
stir fry when they all come home. Andrew makes omelettes with mushrooms, spinach and chicken now every morning. Ilze makes her own mayonnaise out of cottage cheese, yoghurt and mustard. She recommends plenty water and says red wine or whiskey can be drunk occasionally once goal weight
has been reached. Ilze studied online through Banting Buddies to be a coach and became the only qualified Banting Coach in Tzaneen in June this year. She’s now studying for her national diploma in nutrition and then international diploma. She has some 25 clients who email their meal plan and food diary for analyses and adjustments. One adjustment is the carb intake which can vary from 25g a day for one client to 50g for another. Andrew offers parents these tips that helped him lead a healthier lifestyle. Instead of a candy treat give a toy like Lego or Hot Wheels. Instead of cake, cupcakes and cheese puffs at a birthday party have a braai with salad and play games afterwards. Instead of wraps, use lettuce. Stephen is now 45 kgs lighter. His high blood pressure is normal, flashing migraines are gone and the cramps in his hands and legs are gone and the severe acid reflux is also gone. IBS, bad skin, fatigue and constant sweating has stopped. His mood is stable and the depression is gone. Ilze has lost 65kg and is nearing her goal weight. Her severe sinus issues, fatigue, IBS, joint pains, diabetes, brain fog and depression are gone. Andrew has lost 30kg. His concentration has improved, he’s no longer an outsider amongst his peers, his anger has dissipated and he’s become a more helpful and loving person. — Sue Ettmayr sue.ettmayr@gmail.com

R50M for Boulevard revamp A multi-million Rand development will see a complete revamp of the derelict eyesore that is the current Letaba Boulevard building in downtown Tzaneen. The landmark which was the crown jewel of the central business district a decade or so ago, has been left to ruin when its owner, businesswoman Shamira Rinderknecht, met financial difficulties and her plans to renovate the centre came to an abrupt halt. Since then, the largely abandoned building has become a sanctuary for vagrants and street sellers whose presence there has been blamed
for an increase in petty crimes and a sharp decline in business in that area of the CBD. But, there seems to be hope on the horizon as Gauteng-based asset managers, Level Heads, have revealed plans for a complete restoration of the boulevard to the tune of R50-million. According to the company’s spokesperson, Henlie Du Randt, this project is set to kick-off by September next year. “We’ve spent some time at the site these past few months. Our research has shown that Tzaneen is hungry for something different and that the market here is able to accom-

modate another retail park. The new boulevard will be completely different however, as we are not planning to be in competition with Tzaneng Mall or the Lifestyle Centre. Those are malls in the traditional sense and what we are going to offer will be a more niche experience,” Du Randt explained. “It will be an open feel with coffee shops and a relaxing atmosphere – not as crowded as a mall, with a more upmarket experience that will cater for a different market.” According to her, the plans are currently being drawn and the first drafts will be tabled this week. They include a complete overhaul of the parking lot to offer basement and undercover parking over two levels. The existing offices will be retained, but moved into the centre and entrances will be created on both sides of the property to allow access from both Agatha and Boundary Streets respectively. Concerning the notorious hawkers who operate there currently, Du Randt felt that they would be dealt with in a mutually beneficial manner. “The hawkers, as we understand it, have a legal right to do business at the site, but we have had similar experiences in the past and we are fully capable of handling the situation amicably.” Du Randt said that the project will be handled by experienced contractors from Gauteng, but that tenders will be placed in advance for local sub-contracting purposes. “We don’t want to struggle. When you look
at the state of that building and the work that was done there over the past few years by local contractors, I think the Tzaneen community has been let down enough. We will use our preferred suppliers from Gauteng who possess the necessary skills and experience in this field to complete the project on time and correctly. We will however issue tenders for sub-contract work to the locals, but they will be supervised by our own teams.” Earthworks are scheduled for mid-September 2017 and the entire project should be completed within eight months. Whether the name will stay, is not clear at this stage. “We like the name, and we would prefer to keep a portion of it, but nearer to the time a Facebook page will be launched to keep the community in the loop and offer a forum to debate the issue. One thing is for sure, we will finish this project on time.” Bulletin will keep its readers updated on the progress of the project in the months to come. Let us know how you feel about this exciting new development by following us on Facebook and Instagram @tzbulletin or via email at joe@bulletin.us.com Shamira Rinderknecht was not available for comment personally and has yet to respond to another enquiry concerning the current state of disarray at her other big business interest, the Hans Merensky Golf Estate, in Phalaborwa. — Joe Dreyer

The Message Dr Jan Truter Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele

The light of Dey Rodney Dey has been an artist all his life – albeit in various more commercialised forms in his younger days as a shop fitter and draughtsman. The arts was something that he had always shied away from until recently when he retired from his life as a farm manager and decided to follow the advice of his wife, colleagues and friends, and host
his first solo exhibition. “I taught art for a while and I absolutely loved it,” he explained. “It was my family who convinced me to finally take the collection of pieces I had gathered over the years and exhibit them to the world.” His exhibition will comprise of drawings, sketches and painting in a variety of styles across a variety of mediums.
Rodney’s exhibition entitled “Scraps of a Wondering Mind” will be on view to the public at Sundown Farm on Tuesday evening from 18:00. The exhibition will run over three days and close on 9 December. Private views can be arranged by contacting Rodney on 073-315-9969. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Our Opinion - Keep your limelight
Local Hero Clifford Atherstone passed away last Friday, November 25th, at the age of 92. He is regarded by many as one of the pioneers, having arrived in the district in the 1940s to farm with his father. He was a knowledgeable, hardworking and successful farmer, well-respected in the timber-growing, avo, citrus and Bonsmara fraternities. In his leisure time, he enjoyed yachting, golf and regular visits to the game reserve, and in his latter years, bowls and reading. Also known as CB, Oom Cliff and Magamaas, Clifford was a much-loved family man and an active member of St Peter’s Anglican Church. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rosemary, three children, eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
things including that news is relevant to the geography of the publication. Among their teachings were some “secrets” of the previous order that we choose to no longer abide by in the world of the modern press. Rules such as “never let the facts interfere with a good story” and “write what you have” just have no place in the modern media arena any longer. As editor I choose to give everyone the opportunity to have their say in a particular story as my job is not to choose sides but to remain neutral. I am not a judge, not even a juror – I am simply an observer. I investigate things. If it should happen that during my investigation into a certain matter there unearths some obscurity, it is my duty to the reader – and the
person(s) being probed - to continue the investigation before publishing a single word of it. Therefore, some news stories take a while longer to be exposed and if this outlook on news reporting is considered an unworthy read, then this newsman better ready himself for the pitchforks and torches. Whilst there are some of my contemporaries with ambitions superseding those of a humble journalist, mine are tied to my obligations to this community. Those include to observe and record so that they can read and learn. I am a journalist, not a circus monkey and mine is a balancing act between the pen, and the responsibility to decide what it writes – balls and hoops I leave for those in search of the limelight.
Mind-blowing Fact #6 The present population of 5 billion plus people of the world is predicted to become 15 billion by 2080.

Roadhogs deliver hope The first ever Limpopo North Toy Run was hosted by the Tzaneen Chapter of the Roadhogs this past weekend. This annual event is usually held in Polokwane and was the first year that the mass-ride was shifted locally. In total 152 motorcycles joined in this worthy cause which saw bikers gather at the starting point at Merensky High early on Sunday morning. The group cruised through town to their destination at the showgrounds where all the toys, stationery and food parcels were collected for distribution. In total, enough toys were collected to allow nine other chapters of the club in the province to receive a consignment which will then in turn be delivered to orphanages and other organizations caring for children specifically. According to Jaco van Wyk, president of Roadhogs Tzaneen, the event was a resounding success. “It was the biggest ever mass-ride to be held in Tzaneen and we feel extremely fortunate to have been a part of such a worthy cause. We, as the Roadhogs in Tzaneen would like to express our gratitude to every rider, every donor and
especially the members of Tzaneen Roadhogs for their contribution to the success of this day. Thank you also to the Headmaster and staff of Merensky High School for loaning us their facilities to start the mass-ride from.” The toys and other good collected will be delivered to the rest of the region on Friday after which it will be distributed to the various organizations. — Joe Dreyer

Swimmers from clubs across the province trekked to Polokwane this weekend to participate in the annual Limpopo Club Championships. The event is one of the highlights on every club’s calendar and was hosted from the 25th to the 27th of November. The championships would have been held locally had the GTM allowed the clubs the use of the Tzaneen Municipal Swimming Bath. This is sadly not the case as there still have not been any lifeguards appointed at the site. Nevertheless, the swimmers from Shamu under the expert guidance of veteran swimming coach, Johan
Grobbelaar performed extremely well given the circumstances and managed to finish in third position overall. Swimmers from Tzaneen arrive at major galas with a distinct disadvantage as they have to condition themselves mentally for competitions in a 50m Olympic standard pool, after being forced to train in a smaller 25m or 33m bath. The difference in times, stroke lengths, breathing and every other competitive strategy because of this difference, often costs these swimmers their place in a provincial team. — Joe Dreyer
Life’s a pitch The cricket season is far from over for these five players from Laerskool Tzaneen Primary who were selected for the provincial cricket teams in their respective age groups. They will compete in tournaments throughout the coming December holidays in the hopes of furthering their oval dreams. Here they are from left, Maynard Kleynhans (Boys u/12 Captain), Ockert Schoeman (Boys u/12), Elandri Janse van Rensburg (Girls u/13 Captain, which is remarkable because she is only u/11), Ruben Vosloo (Boys u/12) and Letago Sekokotla (Boys u/12).

Dear Mr Editor, Me again, Arthur Ingelsman. So, it has come to this: I have my own column. Who would have thought? I am super stoked! I have to say, our last team talk was one of the longest ever, starting at 05:30 on Thursday morning with the test in Adelaide which only ended on Sunday morning, with a distraction of sorts in Cardiff on Saturday night. You can imagine how many G&T’s a marathon like that extracts from any decent human being! So we had lots of time to talk about many things of importance. I can positively inform you that our friend Oubal is none the wiser as he hasn’t bought your little paper last week. He did however enquire from me whether there was anything of importance that he missed. Of course, I only gave him bits and pieces, but the part that interested him most was our colleague Vlieg’s lamentation on lawyers farming with rocks. Surprisingly he immediately jumped to the Faf du Plessis mint-gate case, stating that he has observed that Australian lawyers are even more stupid than some of their rock farming counterparts in SA. But then he went off on a tangent telling us how their cross country coach at Kwaggasrand High used to encourage them to keep a small quarts stone under their tongues

Rock solid defence? Sincerely, Arthur whilst running, to stimulate the flow of saliva and counter thirst. It took some effort to get him back to stupid Australian lawyers. But what followed was quite enlightening and made me wonder whether Oubal didn’t miss his true calling in life. He said most of us at times had skipped a stop sign, or even a red traffic light, if we could see there was no oncoming traffic, but if there was a traffic cop observing, we would have had no excuse. Especially not the “everyone does it” one. It therefore surprised him that Faf’s Australian lawyer, no doubt rented at some considerable cost, would put up a similar and utterly feeble defence. At that point Gert Grensvegter intervened and asked Oubal what he would have done. The response was quite remarkable: “Your honour, can the prosecution with hundred percent certainty prove that what appeared to be a peppermint on my client’s tongue, was indeed a mint and not a shirt button that he kept in his mouth to stimulate salival flow?” In law, as he understands it, the proof lies with the accuser and one only has to create doubt to have a case dismissed, Oubal said. We all thought it was extremely brilliant!
But perhaps not as brilliant as when Oubal was asked by Koos Kakie’s wife to tell her in a nutshell what is wrong with SA Rugby, after yet another debacle in Cardiff. Missus Kakie took exception when Oubal told her it was impossible to give it to her in a nutshell, thinking that he meant she doesn’t possess the mental capacity to grasp complex concepts. Seeing her disgust, Oubal told her the following: Dawie Theron, coach of the SA u20’s, resigned in June after the 2016 Junior RWC, but SARU will only appoint his replacement on the 9th of December. Meanwhile the u19 CC competition, from which most of next year’s u20 team will be selected, has come and gone with the new coach presumably not having had the opportunity to see the players in action. It is his guess that SARU will eventually hand the new coach the u20 team, much like they handed Allister Coetzee his team of incompetent asisstants. It is therefore worth noting, Oubal said, that NZ last week announced a provisional group of 46 players for the 2017 JRWC, who will attend a training camp in December. That’s the difference and all missus Kakie needs to know to understand the incompetency that is so rive in SA Rugby.
