phases and this week Bulletin can finally report that the project has successfully been completed. “We commend the management and staff contingent of Batlagae Investment for the exceptional way in which they handled and finally completed this massive, and urgent project,” said Maselaganye Matji, CEO of RAL. “We are very satisfied with their work and are thankful to all road users of this area who showed patience during the project. It is through everyone’s cooperation that the task was completed without incident or injury.” Although the road has now been officially reopened, Batlagae Investments manager, Thapelo Chuene, urges caution when using the road to commute between Haenertsburg and Tzaneen. “We are

still adding the finishing touches at the site and currently there are construction vehicles and workers moving along the road surface. We still need to finish the road markings and signs and have therefore placed point’s men on either side of the restored section to warn motorists to slow down as they approach.” Matji also confirmed that there is another project in the pipeline for the coming year to fix other sections of concern along the R528. “We have identified potentially problematic areas along the route that will need attention and it is in our plan to conduct maintenance and repairs across the whole road.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Eight months after the collapse of a massive sinkhole on the R528 through Georges Valley, the road is once again open to the public. Bulletin first reported on the dangers of the sinkhole, a month before it eventually collapsed in March this year. The video of the collapse went viral over social media and sparked an outcry for local government to step in. Since then, Bulletin worked tirelessly alongside the residents of the Georges Valley Residents Association and the Tzaneen community to apply pressure on local government organizations such as Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) to ensure that the road be restored to its former glory. We reported on the progress of the construction through its many

Luilekker ondersoek

Christmas lunch was served Some 200 local pensioners and younger family members came together for the annual Christmas lunch in the village on Saturday. Haenertsburg Rotary prepared and served this annual lunch that was started ten years ago by Mr Christopher White. White was in charge of cooking the chicken with potatoes, carrots and onions in a just-right salted and spiced juice in two übersized pots. There was also butternut, beetroot and coleslaw. Ladies, dressed in traditional colourful clothing, were watching and stirring the bubbling pap in another pot on a wooden fire. The lunch was rounded off with slices of watermelons and juice.
Helene Werhahn (15) from Stanford Lake College and Sarah Nkoana (17), a Miss Mzansi finalist from Marobathota High School near Boyen, were helping as part of their community service in order to make a difference. Helene is hoping to get the President’s Award and her hours of service have garnered her bronze, this will be silver and even more hours next year will get her to gold. Rotary sure lived up to its motto of “Serving Humanity”. — Sue Ettmayr

Lifestyle Card Cloner a arrested A suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon following a tip-off from community members and the quick response by the centre’s security team. According to reports, a security officer at the centre noticed a suspicious-looking man skulking around the ATM arcade at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre on Saturday afternoon. It appeared to the guard as though the man was scouting the area for victims and so he approached him for questioning. The suspect then allegedly became agitated and produced a knife. Following a brief altercation with the security official the suspect fled through the centre. Cleaning staff members and security personnel gave chase and he was apprehended
a few minutes later. The suspect was arrested by Tzaneen SAPS and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The security officer involved in the altercation with the suspect was taken to hospital to recover from his injuries. “We are proud to say that our guard’s vigilant, quick action led to the arrest which ultimately ensures customers can shop in a safe environment at Tzaneen Lifestyle,” said Alida Fraser, General Manager of Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre. “Credit to the SAPS who were instrumental in training and assisting staff and guards at the centre to fight crime over the Christ-
mas period. We are also glad to report that the guard was discharged from hospital the same day.” Fraser went on to compliment the staff and community for the way in which they have approached the situation and offered a guarantee that December’s silly season would not affect the safety of shoppers at this popular retail destination. “This is a clear indication that pro-active steps are taken in the community towards crime fighting, and also an indication that this festive season will be a safe shopping experience at Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Grondsekerheid bly steeds ‘n kwessie solank wipplank politiekery betrokke is.

Happy holidays from Stoffel Vermaak (jnr), Johnkie Phosa, Stoffel Vermaak (snr), Joseph Ngobeni, Saed Milanzi and Willem Snyman. The team that has been keeping your vehicle safely on the road for more than two decades, now has a new addition to their management team in the form of Willem Snyman. He joined the Hi-Q Tzaneen team earlier this year from the SupaQuick Duiwelskloof stable. Snyman’s years of experience in the industry will inject a fresh new energy into the team which is growing from strength to strength. Before you leave home for your holiday destination, be sure to pop into their workshop for a free 10-point safety check and perhaps a new set of wheels, shocks, battery or exhaust to ensure you a hassle free, safe journey. Hi-Q has launched a nationwide awardscard campaign to help you save while rewarding you with some extra spending money this summer. Simply purchase two or more tyres of any of the instore brands to receive your awardscard and start saving. Visit them on the corner of Boundary and Skirving streets for more information. “We wish all our loyal clients and their families a very safe journey this festive season. May you have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed new year,” said owner Stoffel Vermaak.
The Poolgate saga seems to be coming to a head with the announcement by the GTM that a lifeguard has finally been appointed. Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM confirmed that the Tzaneen Municipal swimming bath will be open for use by the public in December, although he could not specify an exact date, nor whether bathers would have to pay an entrance at the vandalized turnstiles. “The pool will be open this December, whether the public pay for entrance or not.” The laughable matter of the Tzaneen public swimming bath started in October 2015
Is it finally over? when the first swimming gala was hosted at the venue in Crown Street after the multi-million Rand upgrade. Following the event, the GTM shockingly announced that the swimming pool was closed to the public. This was allegedly because of a dispute between then Mayor Dikeledi Mmetle, and the management of the local swimming club,
SHAMU. It was alleged that Mmetle was upset that the event was held without her formally opening the facility first. A month later, amid great pomp and ceremony, the mayor cut the ribbon to officially open the facility – and then announced it was closed to the public a week later. Her reason for this was because of the lack of lifeguards. In the
months that followed the swimming bath became the talk of the town with lifeguards applying for positions without possessing the skill to swim or perform cpr. Following that debacle there was the leak that caused the bath to stand empty for three months while contractors who fixed it waited for payment. Be that as it may, come December 12th this year, an as yet unnamed person will take up the post of lifeguard and Tzaneen rate payers might finally receive the return on their rates and taxes investment. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message
Our Opinion Not so sharp
I find it rather vexing that the continued debate on “news worthiness” seems to be focussed solely on the newly appointed rather than the disappointingly retained. This is my last word on the issue of whether or not a particular topic deserves placement on a particular page in this publication or whether an editor should bend to the will of the minority. In the past decade there has been one crucial element of this position drilled into my sub-consciousness and that has been to always remain neutral and objective. Although much has changed, that one thing has not. And it won’t. “Both pen and sword are only as
lethal as the hand who yields it” – Joe Dreyer
The eggless blind
Speaking of clichés, let’s stop moaning about rugby for a bit, shall we? We know it’s really sad that we’ve lost eight games in a row and Allister is so close to being burned at the stake he can practically smell the sulphur already. We get it. And the reason for this is because this “news” is shoved in our faces daily. No wonder we are so down-trodden lately. Bunch of pessimists choose to focus on the negative and forget that the Blitzbokke blasted New Zealand and the Proteas white washed Australia a few weeks back. Pucker up Buttercup.
Relief for farmers envisaged Greg Hawken (53) Greg was widely known in the Tzaneen area as a jester with a kind heart and soft spot for the needy. He was a devoted father and involved in many large charity campaigns for the less privileged. He passed away suddenly this weekend after undergoing heart surgery in Polokwane. Greg is survived by his children Taryn and Greg, step-children Leighan and Russell, Mother Sheilah, 2 sisters and 3 brothers. His funeral will be held today (9 December) at 11:00am at the Dinamus Gemeenskapskerk, Tzaneen. “The day’s labours done My journey’s end has come. A new guide, now lead us on. The path may be the same, But the style, is his own: A new post, will soon pass, Another mark, will be reached. Let us all pray, he will lead us, To an even brighter day.”
Much awaited rains over large parts of production land in South Africa has made it possible for farmers to commence with planting for the 2016/17 season. It is also expected that input costs in the agricultural section are likely to ease in the coming season. Mr Dawie Maree, head of information and marketing at FNB Business and Agriculture, said while input costs remain elevated when compared to historical trends, there has been some decline which bodes well for the season going forward. He said fertilizer and fuel remain the major inputs in crop production, particularly grains, and ac-
Now this may seem a strange greeting from a Christian priest as it originates from the Jewish faith but if you look at the meaning of this word then you will understand; Shalom means “Peace” and we Christians normally say “peace be with you” Do you realize that in 16 days’ time we will be celebrating the most important day in the Christian calendar? The day on which we celebrate the birth of Christ: “For God so loved the world, that He gave us His only Son” This shows us the grace of God and His wish to restore His relationship with us, unconditional love! As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, which should be a joyous occasion we often forget that there are those who will be lonely even destitute, those who cannot afford to celebrate mainly due to financial restraints. This Christmas let us step forward and give freely. What do we do with the left- overs from Christmas lunch, where in some cases three types of meat are prepared, not to forget the vegetables, potatoes and the pudding? There are many out there who will not have such luxuries, some will have to settle for a piece of bread. So maybe we could take these left-overs to some institution like an old age home or a feeding centre? Let us share the good gifts that God has given us with those less fortunate. We must also think of all those who have to work on this day: the emergency services, the police, hospital staff and security companies. Above all this; we must not forget to give thanks to our Heavenly Father. So perhaps attend a service offered by a church. Many make the excuse that they are too busy preparing for the family and so they cannot attend. We should take the example of Mary and Martha, the one who was so busy preparing the meal that she forgot who was the most important guest. (Luke10: 38-42) Do you set an extra place at your dinner table for that special guest? I do not know if I am going to get the opportunity to wish you and your family the best for a Christ filled Christmas before this newspaper closes down for the holidays but rest assured you will all be in my prayers .

count for approximately 35% and 11% of total variable costs. The prices of these inputs are largely influenced by the international crude oil market. “The benefits of lower crude oil prices were however offset by the increased volatility in the Rand exchange rate that we continue to experience.” Maree said other important inputs include herbicides and pesticides, electricity, water tariffs and labour costs. “However, it seems that increases might ease off, except maybe for water tariffs. A moderation in input costs will help revive the sector which is reeling from a devastating drought during the 2015/16 season,” Maree concluded.

Historian, Professor Louis Changuion, wanted to write about the Duke while he was alive but the Duke told him he could only do so once he’d died.

Still good for you... The first SPAR store opened in the Netherlands in 1932. It was originally launched as DESPAR, an acronym of a slogan created to describe the organisation as “Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig” which translates into English as “All benefit from joint co-operation.” Eighty four years on and that fundamental belief system has remained as rock solid as the first cornerstone laid in 1983 to mark the opening of Tzaneen’s very own SPAR. Back then, there were only two other supermarkets in town and Josef’s Spar as it was known, was fast becoming the popular place to shop. Originally owned by a partnership between the Goulding family and Josef Unterpertinger, the store opened with a bang on the 29th of September that year. According to Rex Goulding, it was a day likened to the modern madness that is Black Friday. “Customers cued for the opening and we had to close the doors after the first hour to let people in only ten at time for safety reasons,” he remembered. “One of the opening specials was buy 1Kg boerewors for R2.50 and get one free - another was Lux soap for 29c and 750ml cooking oil for 99c!” Trading was different in 1983 as groceries were not allowed to be delivered to retailers by road - they had to wait for their delivery by rail from Johannesburg – which took a frustrating 10 days to happen. With a staff compliment of only 30, a delivery turn-around time of more than a week and thousands of frenzied shoppers, Spar Tzaneen faced, and overcame, a lot of hurdles to ensure customer gratification. Adapt, improvise and overcome - another of SPAR Tzaneen’s qualities that has remained entrenched in its ethos of convenience and ultimate satisfaction. The building in which SPAR Tzaneen is situated houses another fascinating secret not many of the town’s folk know about today. You see, not only was Josef’s Spar the first of its kind in the area, but it shared a space with another historic resident. The building housed the first escalator in Tzaneen which was bought during the closing of John Orrs in Durban. It was 30-years old when it was installed at SPAR, and 54-years old when they replaced it in 2007. A year later SPAR itself changed hands when it was sold to the cur-
rent owners in 2008. Since then the store has continued to prosper through the goodwill of the community who offered their continuous support. Thinking ahead and planning for the future saw SPAR upgraded to a
Botha, health and hygiene manager, who has been working in the shop for eleven years. She said the standard of hygiene has al-
SUPERSPAR and a few months ago undergo a complete facelift to become the modern shopper’s dream it is today. The overhaul included a new bakery, confectionery section, fresh produce department and lots of open space between the isles for the convenience of their customers. Known for an owner-managed hands on approach, owner Mr Anthony Brett, and his father Allen, regularly parade through these isles to introduce shoppers to the “new” environment. The new shop is fitted with new shelves, innovative display racks, novel LED lighting and a stateof-the-art confectionery counter. But, not everything is new – or replaceable at SUPERSPAR Tzaneen. In fact, some things need to remain in order to compliment the new look but retain the same level of service the clientele have come to cherish. One such valuable asset is the welcoming handshake and generous smile of Solly Masetla who celebrates his 33rd year at Spar. This man has literally watched Tzaneen and the store change through the course of three decades and has become so well-known that shoppers greet him by name when they enter the store. Some shoppers first met him while being pushed around the store in a shopping trolley – they now introduce their own children to Solly in much the same manner. Then there’s “tannie” Bokkie
ways been top priority at all Spar outlets and she intends to keep it that way. She expects a major boost in sales this summer and is proud to still be part of it.
S U P E R S PA R Tzaneen wishes all their loyal customers a very blessed and merry Christmas as they ready themselves for the festive season. “We pray that each and every person leaving for the holiday season will have a blessed and safe journey to and from their destinations and that every one of our customers will enjoy this time with their loved ones. Be safe, be blessed.” There is a certain something that separates SUPERSPAR Tzaneen from its counterparts in the retail sector and it’s not their unbeatable deals, their monthly specials or their massive stock contingent. It’s in the way they make you feel. It’s good for your soul and your pocket. SUPERSPAR Tzaneen – Good for you! — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Fear lessl y the tr uth The 2016 Motul Roof of Africa race was held this weekend in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. It is considered to be one of the toughest hard enduro races on the planet and this year two Merensky pupils competed in, and completed the Silver division. It was an astonishing achievement for the two high school riders, Cronje Lordan (17) and Ralph Schutte (17) who competed in their first ever Roof after performing exceptionally well in the equally tough Impi in November down in Kwazulu-Natal. Both boys trained hard for the arduous three day enduro race which saw them spend more than 20 hours on their mo-
torbikes in blistering hot conditions. Lordan finished his race in 15th position in a time of 21:28:48 while Schutte managed an impressive 22nd spot in a group consisting of 160 riders with a time of 22:18:18. What makes their accomplishment noteworthy is not their overall positions at the finish, but the fact that they competed against veteran riders from across the globe including some of the sport’s most revered athletes from the RedBull, Rockstar Energy and Motul stables. The duo literally had the opportunity to rub shoulders with their heroes as they traversed the countryside around Maseru. Firm favourite from the start, the Brit Graham Jarvis on his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna, crossed the finish line a mere 9 seconds ahead of Spaniard, Alfredo
Cantero, in a time of 16:14:40 to secure his fourth ROA victory. This year’s race was overshadowed by the death of one of the Bronze group riders, Willie-John le Hanie who sustained fatal injuries while riding. The accident happened during the monstrous 160km stage of the event. It is the first fatality in the 50-year history of the event and is a stark reminder of how dangerous the Roof can be. Le Hanie was remembered in a minute’s silence at the prize giving ceremony on Saturday evening. “It was amazing, gruelling, tiring, exciting, tough, easy and beautiful all in one box,” said Cronje Lordan after returning from Lesotho. “Would I compete again? For sure, without a doubt!” — Joe Dreyer

Dear Mr Editor, This will be my last contribution for the year, as I’m off to the old country for the holidays, hoping to have a White Christmas as I’m sick and tired of Black Fridays (and Saturdays!). I have to say, our team talk last week was rather pleasant for a change, with the BlitzBoks winning the Dubai 7’s in some style, not to mention that 40nil drubbing of NZ in the quarters. It just shows what is possible outside the poisonous milieu of the Bok setup, our friend Oubal commented. I’ve told Oubal that you gave your version of what constitutes news in your latest editorial and he responded by saying that it doesn’t really surprise him. He said it has come to his attention that “post-truth” was announced by the Oxford Dictionary as their word of 2016, meaning that objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion
Power of the Sword! Sincerely, Arthur than appeals to emotion and personal believe. Thus, he said, “fearlessly the truth” is no more about cold unadulterated facts, but rather telling people what they want to hear. The old goat then said it’s probably time for us old timers to get with the times (The Times?), holding hands whilst standing in a circle and sing Kumbaya together. And hopefully live happily ever after! Anyway, I’ve diverted somewhat. Oubal somehow got wind of your proposal in a previous editorial that archery should become our new national sport. Although he found this notion quite hilarious, it would appear that he is not completely against the idea, saying it will be a good subject for him to reopen his batting with in January. Brace yourself, would be my advice!
About all that is left for me to say is that our team talk team selected our Sportsperson of the Year as well as Team of the Year for 2016. It was a unanimous decision, reached without three days of debating: Sportsperson: Wayde van Niekerk; Team: Wayde and Ouma Ans Botha. That was some performance! Lastly, I noticed an extraordinary artefact on Oubal’s mantlepiece of which I took a photograph. On enquiry Oubal said it’s a Christmas present he bought for Allister Coetzee - something to fall back on when times are tough:
A Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to all! Yours sincerely, Arthur Ingelsman “The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.” - Gordon W. Allport
