Mediclinic Tzaneen’s staff underwent their annual fire-fighting training amid the brooding presence of cyclone Dineo yesterday morning. Frikkie Schoeman of Modjadji First Aid conducted the drill and was well impressed at the staff’s commitment and eagerness to the cause. Seen here is debtor’s clerk, Kisha Pienaar, extinguishing the mock fire.

situation affects children from all across the province’s demographics. “I do not see colour, all I see are our children who are in need of better facilities to increase their opportunities within this sporting code. I steer away from political agendas and racial mudslinging because that has no place here.” Maluleke admitted that the facilities were not ideal, but added that the organizing committee and sporting body were not responsible for the maintenance or reparations of the stadium as the property belongs to the municipality. In this instance, that municipality is the GTM. Regarding the apparent misconduct by the officials and their alleged failure to adequately monitor the event, Maluleke agreed to meet in person to highlight their challenges. Read next week’s Bulletin for details of that exclusive one-on-one interview.
The GTM is fully aware of the dastardly conditions of the stadium as they often utilize the facility as a venue for their events and public gatherings. They do not have the necessary funds to maintain the track according to their spokesperson, Neville Ndlala. “We are aware of the state of the track and as you know we host events at the stadiums. Trucks and vehicles drive across the tracks to pitch up tents etc,” Ndlala stated. “We can only put the programme as part of the IDP projects and it has not yet been approved, or budgeted for this current financial year. We do not have funds for repairs at the moment.” In the meantime, the Mopani district held their annual athletics championships for Primary and Secondary schools for ages 10 -19 at Nkowankowa stadium this past week. The MEC for Sports , Arts and Culture, Onica Moloi, was present at this meeting. During
his address to the athletes he promised that he and the department would offer their full support to all the athletes in the region. Why his department has not publically spoken out about the state of the region’s facilities is not clear. We have sent an official enquiry to his office and will report on their feedback next week. — Joe Dreyer

Our report on the state of the Nkowankowa stadium’s athletics facilities has sparked some controversy over social media this week. Bulletin focussed on the dilapidated state of the tartan track and the apparent inability of the officials and track judges to enforce certain standards during the recent Mopani Circuit championships hosted at that stadium this month. We tried in vain to obtain comment from top management at Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Schools Athletics South Africa (SASA). After an open discussion over social media which quickly turned into yet another racial debate, the chairperson of Mopani District Athletics and secretary of Limpopo Athletics, Peter Maluleke, contacted our office. During our telephonic discussion Maluleke slammed the racial slurs made by some members of his organization saying that the
