GTM: R25 000 y c n a c a v r e i h s a c r fo

The GTM cannot afford to employ a cashier to control public access at the Tzaneen Municipal swimming bath – because it would apparently cost them R300 000 per annum per cashier. That equates to an outrageous monthly salary of R25 000 for a non-specialist position. This shocking statement came to light during an online exchange on Wednesday evening between GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, and the editor of this publication. The conversation was over the GTM’s public WhatsApp group, of which the Chief Financial Officer, Ms Norah Lion, and members of other media houses in the area are also members. When we queried the statement, Ndlala, justified the debateable salary by claiming that the cashier would have to work weekends and overtime would then play a huge factor. This in light of a previous press re-

lease stating that the swimming bath would only operate five days a week, from Wednesdays to Sundays. The question arose because of members of the public not being able to use the swimming bath over the weekend as they had not purchased tickets at the GTM offices during the week. They were unable to pay for a day pass at the entrance to the facility because the turnstiles (newly installed for access control) had been vandalised a year ago and still not repaired. These were the words of the lifeguard and two security guards at the gate on Sunday afternoon to the visitors. “It’s not true that you can’t get tickets at the pool because of turnstiles not working, we have not appointed a cashier for the pool, it will cost us not less than three hundred thousands per person a year,” Ndlala said. “And we might need more than one cashier, it does not make business sense, we are

looking for affordable ways to make tickets more accessible like using Computicket or Pick n Pay.” Yet, he claimed that the GTM has already advertised the cashier position. “I will send you a recent advert for a cashier and you can do the calculations, unfortunately I cannot discuss salaries of specific individuals.” So why advertise a vacancy that could not be filled because it would not make business sense? No further clarity was given as to exactly what constitutes paying a cashier, controlling public access to a swimming bath, a R25 000 salary every month for working five days a week. We have promised to send follow up questions to Ndlala regarding this matter. We hope to have some feedback on the issue in time for next week’s publication. — Joe Dreyer: joe@bulletn.us.com

Stem cells collected at birth are biologically younger than stem cells collected later in life and therefore have better regenerative potential. Collecting stem cells at birth is also less invasive than harvesting them later in life. The umbilical cord is clamped and cut, separating the baby from the mother and the placenta. A needle is inserted into the umbilical vein and blood is collected into a sterile collection bag. Cord tissue is collected after

collection at the birth of the baby. Netcells facilitates the transport of the collection kit to their state-of-the-art, internationally accredited laboratory. The cord blood and cord tissue are processed and cryogenically stored under controlled conditions. Currently the longest storage period that Netcells offers is 20 years. Cord blood is a 100% match for the baby from whom it has been collected and has a 25% chance of being a match for a sibling. At the beginning of last year, Netcells launched the ‘Families of Hope’ programme- the sibling cord blood donor programme gives potential future hope to families with children suffering from leukemia or other diseases treatable with stem cell transplants. Netcells has committed to supporting one family for every 100 cord blood units that are privately banked. Gynaecologists, who do collections for Netcells, can donate their procedural fees to the programme. This will increase the number of families that could benefit. Any funds not used from procedural fees are directed to CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa). — Sue Ettmayr sue.ettmayr@gmail.com

Ndlala lashes out at Bulletin Tzaneen’s roads are a hazard to its motorists. Bulletin has reported extensively on the issue and after conducting a tour of the town and publishing numerous photographs depicting the shocking state of these roads, issued the GTM with an enquiry. We wanted to know from the GTM whether a plan of action had been devised, when and where the potholes would be fixed and how long the project would take. After nine days of receiving no response from the GTM’s communications department via email, we engaged the municipal spokesperson (out of desperation) over a public platform and demanded answers. A fourhour discussion ensued over the GTM’s WhatsApp group, during which spokesperson Neville Ndlala accused the Bulletin of spreading lies and “attacking” the GTM. “Joe, if you wanna talk to me do so directly don’t come here (WhatsApp Group) and expose yourself, I know your problem and I can handle you. These people don’t know you, I will only respond to you after the press ombudsman makes a ruling on the lies you publish, your misleading statements, your misinterpretation of comments with a view to mislead and so many lies you have been printing since joining the Bulletin. I will await the ruling on your conflict of interest as an owner and editor and your complaint that if we don’t advertise you will continue to attack us.” Again I asked him to answer my questions regarding the

potholes (and other issues) which were sent to him more than a week ago and his reluctance to respond. The discussion deviated off topic again. “Joe I know you and I know you are stupid, so I don’t

have time for your stupidity, first get an education and we can debate, you are the worst journalist I know, I thought all those stories I heard about you being worse than the late Aucamp, were lies but now I believe, you quoted me on one of your editions and I confronted you, did you tell the public that you lied and never gave you such comment?” [Verbatim] In response to the pothole problems Ndlala eventually said that potholes were continuously being repaired by a team that have identified certain areas as priorities. “Why would I give you a programme about potholes, don’t you know it is an operational thing done on a day to day basis, why don’t you ask me to take you to where our people are patching potholes, like Herald did?” In fact, we asked him for these details in a media enquiry dated Wednesday, 1st of March (nine days ago). Nevertheless, some potholes were indeed plugged. To date however, some of the most serious areas (Messer Street and Third Avenue) have not received any attention. Some potholes have simply been filled with sand. Parts of the road surface which are showing signs of serious erosion (particularly in Boundary Street) are still continuing to disintegrate and will soon form new potholes which will only perpetuate the problem. “Potholes are repaired on a daily basis, and the areas prioritized are main roads and the CBD. We have done Koedoe Street, part of Claude Wheatley Street, Boundary Street, Agatha and Second Avenue. This was done this week. So we do this on a day to day basis,” he added. — Joe Dreyer

Forget the grave, become a tree The world is facing a problem. And it is one that has been overlooked for so long that nobody really knew it was a problem, before it became one. Overcrowding. The planet is literally running out of space to accommodate its human population – the living and the dead. Graveyards across the country are filling to capacity which leads to town planners having to develop new burial grounds which in turn occupy space which could otherwise be utilized for homes. In Tzaneen, just this week, we were told that the cemeteries have filled up and a new site will soon be identified. It is a very common problem and needs a very uncommon solution. Enter Biotree.earth. Two young men who managed to marry logic with a little bit of science through the incorporation of a philosophy which could set in motion a change in the way we humans approach the rituals of death. “As a race, we have traditionally honoured and memorialised the lives of those we love by burying their remains to return to nature,” said Chris Cilliers, founder of Biotree. “However, as we have expanded and transcended we have not addressed an alternative to this age¬-old tradition, which now is no longer sustainable. In fact, it is causing an ever expanding crisis globally, damaging the environment and using up vast amounts of space.” For a very long time the idea behind traditional funerals has been to offer relatives a memorial of sorts to return to and pay respects to their departed. A designer tombstone or an extravagant memorial site for example. But what if there was a better alternative? “The problem with traditional gravesites are multi-faceted,” said Ryan Lancefield co-owner of Biotree. “The sites are often vandalized, graves are robbed and a common occurrence is that the cemetery itself is not maintained by local municipalities. Combine those factors with the space problem and you have a tradition that just does

not fit well into the sustainability module of a growing society.” The solution is a very simple one – become a tree. That’s right, become part of nature and offer your loved ones and future generations a lasting monument while simultaneously enriching the environment and taking away from the global crisis. The product itself is remarkable. Biotree is a 100% biodegradable cremation urn, which turns cremation ashes into a tree once planted. It has been designed to pay homage to life whilst giving an environmentally sound alternative to traditional forms of burial. The urns are constructed of natural plant fibres that contain a blend of nutrients that aid in fertilising the surrounding soil. The rest of the urn is manufactured using biodegradable and natural materials. The outer shell is made from a bamboo-like compound with a natural cork inlay which contains no binding substance (unlike the cork used in wine bottles which struggles to decompose). Your ashes are placed inside the urn along with a tree seed. A little water is added and the urn buried in the ground. The urns are issued with 3 indigenous tree species of your choosing. The trees are selected according to your own preference complementing the unique fauna footprint that surround them by creating a living tribute to those who now rest at their roots. The urns are available in two colours, white for humans and green for pets. More information on this ground-breaking initiative can be obtained by visiting their website at www.biotree.earth. — Joe Dreyer

GTM mum over Park Street As has become customary regarding media enquiries sent to the GTM for answers to pertinent issues affecting the community, no response was given on the urgent situation in Park Street. The once beautiful public park is being overrun by taxi drivers and ‘bakkie-mechanics’ who show no regard for the residence or the environment in that neighbourhood. Last week we reported that taxi drivers were stopping their vehicles in the park and using water from the nearby stream to wash their vehicles. We photographed a group of five busses during one such incident last week. Following our report on the matter, a media enquiry was once again (as per protocol) sent to the spokesperson of the GTM requesting feedback as to what the GTM plans on doing to put a stop to this lawless behaviour.

To advertise in the Bulletin please call: Jacques 071 268 2543

We have received no feedback whatsoever and the situation has worsened overnight. Yesterday morning (Thursday) we spotted fourteen vehicles in the park. Nine were taxis being cleaned and five were other vehicles, including two dilapidated ‘bakkies’ which were being serviced. The park is littered with rubbish, vehicle spares and patches of motor oil from the backyard mechanics. What does the town’s bylaws say about these types of behaviours? Will there be stricter measures implemented to ban such practices? We have again tried to gain clarity on the matter and will report on this matter in the editions to follow. — Joe Dreyer

Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele Vrede

Here, vandag wil ek by U rus.”

Nkateko Phakula, Leané Heydenrych, Nyasha Risinamhodze, Zander Rikhotso, Cheyeza Mukhari, Marli Ouwenkamp, Risima Ngobeni, Tyra du Plessis, Luan Verster en DA Swart.

Sumari Vorster (individueel deelgeneem)

Polokwane dominates Tuffy Timothy Manzhelele, a Polokwane runner, won this year’s instalment of the 42.2 kilometre Tzaneen Aida 4-in-1 Tuffy race in an outstanding time of 2:42:52. Manzhelele looked fresh and relaxed as he ascended the gruelling Agatha Road in the home stretch to the historic Coach House where hundreds of fans awaited his arrival. He finished just short of five minutes ahead of second place runner, Steven Dikobo, who crossed the finish in a time of 2:47:28. In third place was Herbert Mokgala, the first Veteran to cross the line, in a time of 2:49:52. Although last year’s winner, Polokwane Marathon Club’s Rutendo Mapota, did not com-

pete in this year’s race, his record time of 2:40:26 which he setup in 2016 remained untouched on Saturday. The Tuffy is a highlight on the local road running calendar and attracts many runners from across the province to its challenging hills and picturesque scenery each year. The event features a 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half-marathon, 12km and 5km fun run.
