GTM: R25 000 y c n a c a v r e i h s a c r fo
The GTM cannot afford to employ a cashier to control public access at the Tzaneen Municipal swimming bath – because it would apparently cost them R300 000 per annum per cashier. That equates to an outrageous monthly salary of R25 000 for a non-specialist position. This shocking statement came to light during an online exchange on Wednesday evening between GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, and the editor of this publication. The conversation was over the GTM’s public WhatsApp group, of which the Chief Financial Officer, Ms Norah Lion, and members of other media houses in the area are also members. When we queried the statement, Ndlala, justified the debateable salary by claiming that the cashier would have to work weekends and overtime would then play a huge factor. This in light of a previous press re-
lease stating that the swimming bath would only operate five days a week, from Wednesdays to Sundays. The question arose because of members of the public not being able to use the swimming bath over the weekend as they had not purchased tickets at the GTM offices during the week. They were unable to pay for a day pass at the entrance to the facility because the turnstiles (newly installed for access control) had been vandalised a year ago and still not repaired. These were the words of the lifeguard and two security guards at the gate on Sunday afternoon to the visitors. “It’s not true that you can’t get tickets at the pool because of turnstiles not working, we have not appointed a cashier for the pool, it will cost us not less than three hundred thousands per person a year,” Ndlala said. “And we might need more than one cashier, it does not make business sense, we are
looking for affordable ways to make tickets more accessible like using Computicket or Pick n Pay.” Yet, he claimed that the GTM has already advertised the cashier position. “I will send you a recent advert for a cashier and you can do the calculations, unfortunately I cannot discuss salaries of specific individuals.” So why advertise a vacancy that could not be filled because it would not make business sense? No further clarity was given as to exactly what constitutes paying a cashier, controlling public access to a swimming bath, a R25 000 salary every month for working five days a week. We have promised to send follow up questions to Ndlala regarding this matter. We hope to have some feedback on the issue in time for next week’s publication. — Joe Dreyer: joe@bulletn.us.com
