The infamous Talana Hostel in Koedoe Street, in Tzaneen’s old industrial area, was destroyed by a raging inferno for the second time since 2007 when 180 shacks were guttered. This most recent fire is believed to have started during the early hours of Saturday morning. In a matter of hours it had razed 150 shacks to the ground. Two people lost their lives in their sleep. One of the deceased was an employee at Fairview Lodge, Walter Relela. At the time of going to print the name and age of the second deceased had not yet been released. Following the fire, the Acting Social Development MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, visited the affected area along with officials of the GTM on Sunday. The municipality assisted the families of Talana with temporary shelter and meals from SASSA. Talana has long been a bone of contention between the residents of this squatter camp and the Greater Tzaneen

Municipality. Tensions between the two started in July 2007 after the municipality refused to help the squatters who became homeless after their shacks were ravaged by a fire. At the time, the GTM was busy with a RDP housing scheme and promises were made to certain residents of the hostel that they would benefit from this scheme. Eventually, after a very lengthy battle, 100 of the affected residents were issued with low-cost housing. Soon after, the squatter camp filled up again. “Some of these people have RDP houses which they rent out to other people in the area for up to R3600 per month. They come stay here in the squatter camp because they know that if a fire burns their shacks, the GTM will give them another house,” said one of the residents at the hostel. “There are a few officials from the GTM who also own some of these houses which they use as a form of generating income. It is not fair to the rest of us who

live in squalor.” Talana is also known for its attraction to criminal elements. Escaped convicts, illegal immigrants, petty thieves, drug dealers and gangsters are known to frequent this area. Will Talana be rebuilt? Is it legal for people to occupy this section of industrial property? Do the occupiers of this land pay rates and taxes? Can SASSA afford to fit the bill for food and shelter for the now homeless residents of that hostel? Bulletin tried to get comment from the GTM on the allegations and to commend them on their efforts in assisting with the temporary housing of the affected squatters. There was no response from Neville Ndlala, the spokesperson for the GTM. Instead, Ndlala removed the Bulletin from the municipality’s public WhatsApp group and now refuses to respond to media enquiries. — Joe Dreyer

Thieves strike again

Avo thieves have struck again on a farm outside Haenertsburg. The fences were cut and it is estimated that about two bakkie loads were stolen. The fruit was immature with no chance of ripening.

Skietgeveg in Dothwait Straat Die polisie in Louis Trichardt het Maandagmiddag toegeslaan op ‘n woning in Dothwait Straat in die middedorp. Hulle het reageer op inligting dat gewapende verdagtes in ‘n huis, nommer 64, skuil. ‘n Klopjag is op die huis uitgevoer en ‘n skietgeveg tussen lede van die polisie en die verdagtes binne die huis, het losgebars. Die verdagtes het uiteindelik hulself aan die polisie oorhandig en niemand is in die geveg gewond nie. Vier verdagtes tussen die ouderdomme van 23 en 37-jaar is inhegtenis geneem en ‘n groot hoeveelheid ammunisie is op beslag gelê. Die ammunisie sluit in ‘n

‘n Taxibestuurder van Bolobedu, net buite Tzaneen, is vroeër die week buite sy huis deur onbekende aanvallers doodgeskiet. Volgens die polisie het die aanval omstreeks 03:00 Sondagoggend plaasgevind. Die slagoffer, Lucas “Sheleni” Mashale (37), was die eienaar van die “Long Distance Taxi Association” wat langafstandroetes tussen Gauteng en Bolobedu bedryf het. Hy was blykbaar nog in sy voertuig toe hy aangeval en doodgeskiet is. Die motief vir die aanval is

nogsteeds nie duidelik nie, maar die polisie se Lt Kol Moatshe Ngoepe meen dat taxigeweld nie uitgesluit kan word nie. “Enige iemand wat inligting kan verskaf wat sal lei tot die suksesvolle inhegtenisneming van die verdagtes kan Lt Kol Mathebula op 082-414-3309 skakel,” het Ngoepe gesê. Street hawkers cover every inch of the pavements outside shopping centres and taxi-drivers blatantly ignore every possible traﬃc law (often in full view of law enforcers) daily. The cries of the community seem to fall on deaf ears as the municipality chooses to ignore the current, blatant refusal by its communications department to work hand-inhand with local media. Three weeks ago, Bulletin sent a media enquiry to the GTM spokesperson for comment on the problem with taxi drivers washing their vehicles in an open park in Park Street. We have still not received any comment and the situation has worsened. On the 14th of March we sent another enquiry about the prostitution problem in the CBD and that enquiry too, has been completely ignored. On that same day (14 March 2017) we sent another enquiry into the sinkholes forming along Agatha Road (which has already claimed

The roads are a pothole-riddled mess, open public parks lay blanketed under waste, motor vehicle parts and discarded condom wrappers, prostitutes conduct their business in plain view on every street corner along the busiest intersections of the CBD and the farming community has been all but crippled by an electrical infrastructure collapse that will cost millions to repair.

Nothing has come of that and Bulletin has now systematically been removed from every communication channel including the GTM’s public WhatsApp group. Certain media, an integral part of the communications channel between the municipality and its rate payers, has now been eﬀectively – and seemingly purposefully - incapacitated. The Tzaneen Eco Club invites you to join them for a presentation on the Dynamics of the Nylsvley Nature Reserve situated in Mookgopong, by Dr Jurg Bezuidenhout. Dr Bezuidenhout spent three years researching the complex ecology of Nylsvley, for which he received his MSc and PhD from the University of Pretoria. He joined Westfalia in 1986 where he served in various managerial positions, and received the prestigious Golden Avocado Award for his eﬀorts in the successful exporting of avocados. Since 2014 he has pursued a career as a freelance researcher and writer. The talk will be held at 5.30pm on Thursday 30 March at the Macadamia Community Centre. Matteus 5:23: “As jy dus jou gawe na die altaar toe bring en dit jou daar byval dat jou broer iets teen jou het, laat staan jou gawe daar by die altaar en gaan maak eers vrede met jou broer en kom dan en bring jou gawe.” Om nie te vergewe nie, verwoes jy net jou eie lewe!

Naelskraap vir Vossies Ben Vorster se tennissterre het verlede Woensdag in Polokwane aan die Noordstreek tenniskampioenskap gaan deelneem. Drie van die vier spanne, die meisies A- en B-spanne en die seuns B-span, het as naaswenners uit die stryd getreë. Die meisies B-span is Zani Vorster, Jolani van der Merwe, Charlize Engelbrecht en Michaela Bekker.

The Mile weather set the tone The 25th Ebenezer Mile at the Mountain Yacht Club was an unprecedented success marked by one of the sunniest days ever. From the slick Haenertsburg Rotary organisation skills, to their entertaining and informative MC Morris Stander and finally to the clear as crystal voice of Amy Taylor who announced the winners. The excitement began with the skirl of pipes from African Skye piper Ian Houston. Above, one could hear what sounded like the buzzing of a million bees, but it was the bz---bz----bz of two drones that followed the swimmers’ progress in the water. Onlookers perused the stalls to buy perfect Westfalia avos, pancakes and other food and drink. Letaba SPCA, with head honcho Ellie Potgieter and her volunteers, grinned broadly as they sold their record-break 400th

meal for the animals. Rotarians on the barge worked hard to ensure correct procedure. There was also a smattering of dogs with names like Zackie and Gaby. Roxy the black Labrador couldn’t resist a pre-Ebenezer Mile swim. There were 354 swimmers. Winners of the Ebenezer Mile were Brandon Thysse (19) in a time of 00:39:03 and Sulé van der Merwe (18) in a time of 00:39:15. Sulé also won a floating trophy for breaking the previous record for women 14-30 which was 00:22:04. She swam it two minutes and 47 seconds faster. Abdul Malick Railoun was also awarded a floating trophy for the fastest mile at 00:19:42. Justin Winnan and Leon Roode also won prizes for swimming in all the events totaling 7.8 km.

Grasbaan kelder Oos-Moot Ben Vorster het die afgelope naweek op hul tuisveld teen die spanne van Hoërskool OosMoot in die derde rondte van die Puks-Reeks kragte gemeet. Die Pretoriaaners het vroegoggend afgeskop met wedstryde op die netbalbane en deur die loop van die dag toegesak op die verskeie rugby en hokkievelde waar hul sterk weerstand vanaf die tuisspanne ontvang het. Om 12:30 die middag, het die senior seuns op die A-veld opgedraf om die hoofwedstryd van die dag se hokkie van stapel te stuur. Die Oos-Moot seuns was ‘n goed-afgeronde span met goeie dissipline en uitmuntende stokvaardighede, maar die grasbane van Hoërskool Ben Vorster, en die bloedige Laeveld-son, het die manne so ietwat gekelder. Tydens die eerste helfte het OosMoot keer op keer in die Vossies se doelgebied geboer, maar kon hulle nie daarin slaag om die bal verby Vossie-wagter, Lebo Monareng te stuur nie. Ben Vorster het ‘n harde stryd opgesit en ‘n driekwart-minuut voor die halftyd-ﬂuitjie het regter-skakel, Renaldo Janse van Rensburg, na ‘n strafhoek, die openingsdoel vir die tuisspan gemoker. Die tweede helfte is weereens deur die Oos-Moot voorry gedomineer. Hulle kon net nie afrond om die

blitsvinnige bewegings in doele te omskep nie. Die frustrasies was duidelik sigbaar toe daar ‘n paar keer met die skeidsregter woorde gewissel is. Groen karate is aan beide spanne uitgedeel en die wedstryd is weer aan die gang gesit. In die doodsnikke van die stryd het die Vossies se seepgladde regter-vleuel, Pelly Shingange, ‘n pragdoel van net buite die doelgebied, links onder in die besoekers se doelboks laat weergalm om die tuisspan ‘n 2-0 oorwinning te gun. Dit was ‘n swaarmoedige oorwinning en een wat daarop gedui het dat die Vossies eerder maar ‘n bietjie meer gelukkig as goed was op die dag. Die Vossies sal baie meer aandag aan hul afronding en korthoekie-strategieë moet afstaan as hul enigsins hoop om op ‘n astrobaan hul segetog voort te sit. Nietemin, dit was ‘n goeie wedstryd en beide spanne moes hard werk om in die spel te bly. Ben Vorster se Bosman Haneczeck-Kruger is as “man of the match” aangewys. — Joe Dreyer
