The municipal manager for the Maruleng Local Municipality (MLM), Peter Lerole has finally released himself from his duties just when his 14 days suspension lapsed. The move was described by opposition parties as the actions of someone who wants to flee from the law. It is reported that he resigned at the time opposition parties in the municipality were demanding that he be suspended and charged with misconduct. Spokesperson for one of the opposition parties in the council, the Civic Warriors Movement (CWM), Jerry Morema, said though they are relieved that at last Lerole has left his duties, they are concerned he left at the time he was due to face disciplinary measures in the council. He was due to be
grilled by the council for increasing his salary as well as issuing a cleaning tender against the instruction of the council. “The municipal manager agreed to be given the sum of R947 000 per year but instead increased his salary to R 1, 2 million per year without the approval of the council. We also, during a council sitting ordered him to buy a waste removal truck worth R579 000, but he decided to appoint a service provider to the tune of R18 million without informing the council,” said Morema. “During a council sitting last week we asked the mayor to send Lerole a letter asking why he should not be suspended given the nature of the charges he faced. The Mayor sent her driver to deliver the letter to him.
When we approached the driver to know how he delivered the letter he told us that the mayor told them not to send the letter. He resigned when we were to deliver the letter to him on our own,” he added. The municipal manager was suspended in February for 14 days following the special sitting of the council and the matter was subsequently reported to the Hawks for investigations. Morema said that now that there is proof that something went nasty with the cleaning contract. They are going to push for the contract to be terminated and that a new truck to collect waste should be purchased. At the time of going to print the Maruleng municipality could not comment as the matter is before the courts.

Nkowankowa based community builder and the recipient of the Inyathelo award for philanthropy, Sam Ntsanwisi (32) wrote a book aimed at speaking out about his ideas on social ills affecting the community. Ntsanwisi who is the founder of Xivono xa vantshwa (Vision of the youth) is known for annually running solo long distances across cities to Nkowankowa aimed at promoting the “16 days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse. Ntsanwisi said his book “He is the father” is aimed at communicating social problems in communities such as children who grow up without their fathers
or their mothers, but still be expected by people to lead normal lives. He said that he learnt that in order to fix a community, parents need to be involved in what their children do from an early stage of the lives. He added that for all that to be achieved community stakeholders such as churches, community based organisations and schools need to come on board and play a role in building communities around them. The book is also aimed at highlighting bullying within the youth borne out of growing up in broken families, and acts of abuse such as rape and abuse of old people in their communities.
Ntswanwisi, the younger brother of popular broadcaster, Rebeka Ntsanwisi, made a name for himself in 2005 when he started running solo marathons criss-crossing cities back into his hometown of Nkowankowa promoting the “16 day of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse. He began in 2005 by running from Durban through Johannesburg to Nkowankowa stadium. He has even started a youth development organisation called Vantshwa va Xivono meaning the youth with the vision. The organisation assists the youth with social related matters, educational as well as
spiritual revivals. He had also volunteered service at the Ritavi police station dealing with victim empowerment programme issues entailing giving counselling to the victims of crime. Last year he had run from the Union buildings in Pretoria to Nkowankowa. He took three days to run from Pretoria to Tzaneen and when he is on the road he is accompanied by a contingent of vehicles to help with support on the road. He said that he helped many ill-disciplined youths and their wayward behaviour teaches him that there are people out there in need of help. -Jan Mafetsa
Scott-Crossley back in court on Monday The attempted murder charge hearing against Mark Scott-Crossley was postponed this week on Tuesday at the Naphuno magistrate court, to Monday 19th of March after a brief appearance to continue his bail application. This time when he appeared, he was not accompanied by community members protesting that he be denied bail. The victim, Victor Mabunda, was also not
in court. Crossley, from Hoedspruit outside Tzaneen, is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly ran over a farm worker, Victor Mabunda, from a neighbouring farm with his car. The victim claimed that he was returning from a local shop when the car driven by Scott-Crossley approached him and knocked him down. After the incident,
the suspect disappeared for two weeks before handing himself over to the police in Pretoria. The incident happened while he was serving a suspended five year sentence for throwing one of his employees, Wilson Chisale, into a lion’s den in 2004. He has since been detained with bail refused. -Jan Mafetsa

“I don’t think the Tzaneen traffic cops have raincoats,” said a motorist on Monday. “Whenever there is a little bit of rain, they are nowhere to be found, especially not at the Deerpark intersection.” Though said in jest, Bulletin discovered this week that not only do the GTM traffic officers not have raincoats – they don’t have any new uniforms either. We spoke to a source inside the municipality who alleged that the last time the traffic cops were issued with new uniforms was a few years ago. Their current uniforms are faded and most don’t seem to fit anymore. “There was

a tender put out at one stage for a supplier to provide us with uniforms and boots and the likes, but none of us could wear them as they were not only the wrong sizes, they were impractical. The uniforms were a different colour and the complete wrong designs. Most of us now buy our own boots. When it rains we use umbrellas because we have just not been supplied adequate gear.” The same problem exists in the Mopani District Fire Department. According to the firefighters based in Tzaneen, they are currently not adequately kitted out to fight chemical fires as
they don’t have the right PPE or masks for the task. Allegedly, they also have not been issued new uniforms or fire jackets over the past five years. At one stage the entire fire department had no radio communications and the firefighters were forced to communicate with their chief via WhatsApp, using their personal data. The same for general maintenance on the vehicles. Fire teams reportedly club together when one of the trucks or vehicles need to have a flat tyre repaired because they receive no backup from the District. “We were at an accident scene in
Stand van Damme Dam Levels
Magoebaskloof last month where a truck driver had lost control down the pass and the vehicle set alight after impact. Not only did Mopani Fire station arrive on scene late, but the fire truck’s fuel tank was leaking! We stopped the driver and asked him to reverse a while away from the scene for fear that the fire truck would set alight!” recounted an emergency services responder. Bulletin has issued an official media enquiry to Neil Shikwambana, spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality to gain clarity on the matter. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Hospital contaminates Letaba River Medical waste and raw sewerage is being dumped into the Letaba River from a pump station at the Letaba Hospital. Just a few hundred metres from the site, water is being extracted from the river for consumption by residents in the Letsitele Valley and Nkowankowa areas. This has apparently been the practice since October 2017 when the Letaba Hospital pump station stopped working. DA Deputy Shadow Minister of Health, Lindy Wilson visited the site on Monday morning, accompanied by Bulletin, and witnessed first-hand how the waste was flowing from the overflow at the pump station, straight into the river below it. There were bloodied bandages, used surgical gloves, cotton swabs and other medical waste spewed across the river’s embankment. The rotten stench of human waste consumed the air around it. “This is absolutely horrifying! How many people are drinking this contaminated water daily? People can die from this,” Wilson exclaimed. “This is the reason for the DA’s motion to take away control of the water from the Mopani District Municipality. This type of malpractice is criminal and must come to an end. Enough is enough.” According to a source inside the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), the pump station stopped operating last year when Eskom removed the breakers from the site due to non-payment by the Mopani District Municipality (MDM). The pump station is supposed to pump the waste from the Letaba Hospital to a water purification plant in Nkowankowa. This cannot happen without power supply and the waste now flows from the station’s overflow directly into the river beneath it. “There is nothing wrong with the pump station itself. Everything works one hundred percent, except without power supply it obviously cannot run, and now we sit with an environmental disaster. Just a few metres from here, people bathe in the river. They also fetch water from here for drinking and household use,” our source revealed. Bulletin accompanied Wilson into the Letaba Hospital where we met with the acting CEO, Matron Esther Mashaphu, the acting Senior Clinical Manager, Vinnie Bopape, the Risk Manager, Mr Ngoepe and the hospital’s CFO, Mr Mbalati.
At first, the group seemed open to discussion and willing to answer Wilson’s questions. They however requested ten minutes to caucus on whether or not they should be engaging the media in an unprepared interview. They left the boardroom and returned a short while later and referred any questions on the matter to the Mopani Spokesperson, Neil Shikwambane, and the Limpopo Department of Health’s Derrick Kganyago. We contacted Kganyago who claimed that the Department was not previously aware of the problem. “We were made aware of this only on Monday after your visit to the hospital,” he said. “We are extremely concerned because this should not have been allowed to happen in the first place and it is a major, major health risk to the community who obviously use this contaminated water daily. We will now pressurize Mopani until the issue has been rectified.” Mopani has denied responsibility. Their spokesperson told Bulletin that the municipality is not responsible for the payment of electrical accounts of institutions such as hospitals or schools. “We only take responsibility for household services. The waste that is being dumped by the hospital is the hospital’s concern and not ours. The Department of Health needs to give you the answers on the matter as they are responsible for the hospitals in the province,” Shikwambana said. The DA has in the meantime approached the Human Rights Commission and have requested investigations into the matter. They have also requested water samples to be taken and for the entire section of the Letaba River to be rehabilitated. “We expected that there would be a back and forth between Mopani and the Department of Health. The Human Rights Commission will now tell us who is at fault and A water truck extracting water for household use, not 500m from the Letaba Hos- charges will be laid against them,” pital contamination site. Wilson concluded.

In the spotlight The disgusting state of Tzaneen’s roads continue to show the complete disdain with which the Greater Tzaneen Municipality treats the concerns of their citizens. It has been three weeks since Bulletin posted a video online showing the completely disintegrated roadway at the Claude Wheatley intersection. Potholes the size of truck tyres. We were accosted by a municipal employee for pointing out the lack of anything remotely resembling even a smidgen of work ethic, pride or responsibility on the part of the apathetic

Sorry GTM, not good enough! municipal management. This week we returned to the site and found what was expected. A very shoddy patchwork of instant-mix haphazardly poured into the craters at the intersection to at least create the appearance of a reparation job. Most of the filling has already been dislodged by the heavy traffic in this area. To the municipality we as members of the Tzaneen community lodge an urgent request to have the Claude Wheatley intersection completely re-tarred, not with instant cold mix, but by

Sewing lessons offered Zarah Otto (12) has been on a sewing course with dressmaker Louise Swart at the Adam’s Café centre in Tzaneen for the past year. Zarah, who is being home schooled, wants to make her own clothes. During her time with Louise she’s learnt about material, type of stitches, how to cut and has
started pattern making. Zarah has completed a handbag, pajama pants and has made a dress from a pattern choosing her own fabrics. Zarah’s lessons are every Wednesday for 1½ hours. Louise says that’s about the limit for a lesson as if longer pupils get either tired or bored.

Rehabilitation centre established in Tzn Azelle Grobler (32) is living her dream that’s culminated in her officially known as the Tzaneen Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. From her home on King Edward Drive in Tzaneen, Azelle manages her one-man hairdressing business as well as her rehabilitation centre. Her hairdressing salon is in the front of the house where the interview took place with a little dog called Lily cuddled comfortably on the interviewee’s lap. Lily belongs to Azelle’s mom who works nearby. Azelle looks after Lily every weekday. “My mom drops Lily off in the mornings and fetches her after work.” Azelle was recently involved with the Australian programme “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here,” produced by Triophere and
Azelle with the recovering African Goshawk eating worms in her garden.
ITV studios. Filming for the programme has been going on at the Swadini reserve for the past four years. Azelle met veterinarian Chris Brown who has a TV show in Australia called BonDi Vet. The producers were looking for birds to put back into the wild as part of their commitment to give back to nature. Azelle had raised two baby kingfishers and they were ready to be returned into the wild and both were set free at Swadini.
Azelle, who’s always loved animals, started saving little creatures such as finches and mouse birds a decade ago. She also took in unwanted reptiles. These reptiles come in ill as their owners either don’t know their feeding habits or the novelty of owning a reptile has worn off. She’s also caught and released many snakes into safe areas including protected African Rock Pythons. She works hand-inglove with the vets at the Tzaneen Animal Clinic. Wouter Pretorius from North Eastern Falconry Association has been an invaluable help to Azelle in terms of getting her rehabilitation centre legal, dealing with the paperwork needed to move creatures to other areas and in training the African Goshawk that’s currently in Azelle’s care. The bird was hit by a car. Most birds in her care have been injured either in car accidents or in dog attacks. Azelle says, “It’s never the perpetrators who stop to help the bird they’ve just injured. It’s the drivers behind who exert their compassion and stop to help the injured creature.” Her health issues, as well as compassion for animals, led her to adopt a plant based lifestyle three years ago. Birds are being squeezed out of their From left are Chris Brown, Wouter Pretorius natural habitat in the Tzaneen area due and Azelle Grobler at Swadini. to the rapid expansion of the human ABOVE: The kingfisher pair that was released population. With the world population at Swadini. fast reaching the 8-billion mark, the
pressure on all wildlife is enormous. Extinctions in the animal world are happening at an alarming rate and birds are no exception. Many of Azelle’s creatures are released in Mooketsi at ZZ2. The tomato giants, who work with nature, have a huge expanse of land that needs wildlife. Azelle is so grateful that she has a safe release site for all her ‘patients’. She recently released barn owls on ZZ2 land for rodent control. Quintin Hagens from Magoebaskloof rings all Azelle’s rehabilitated birds before release. This gives Azelle and Nature Conservation a tighter control on bird populations and movements. Azelle bemoans the fact that poisons are out of control as these affect wildlife detrimentally. She doesn’t tame any of her rehabilitated creatures as they have to be able to return to the wild. The worst thing the public can do when picking up babies is to try and give them water. Water fills up in the lungs and they drown. Birds need worms and bugs and get their liquid from these. Azelle buys bird food in the form of live worms from a supplier in Modjadjiskloof. She also orders live bugs from The Herpetology Company in Durban. Phoenix worms are the most nutritious worms and grey crickets are bird favourites as they are very soft and easy to digest. She’s just had a hectic time with many babies in her care. Breeding season is from September to the end of March and the intake of creatures was a strain with babies needing to be fed every 20 minutes. As a recognized rehabilitation centre Azelle will be able to get funding. At the moment all funding comes from her hairdressing business. This includes the food, the cages, vet bills and payment for hired help to see that hygienic standards are met.

Granny’s Grumbles – Going Viral
Up until a few years ago I had absolutely no idea what going viral meant. It was only after I was at the receiving end of a going viral message that I realised how much harm it can actually do to your business. People can actually say what they like and once it hits the internet and other networking sites you end up feeling like polony. Some years ago I received a message via Facebook from an acquaintance with an attachment called “Killer Plant”. The message said “You sell this killer plant quite openly at your nursery – have you no shame”. There was a picture of a Diffenbachia - common name – Dumb Cane. A rather hysterical write-up claimed that a 2 year old had chewed a large leaf of the said plant and had to be taken to the doctor because of the pain in his mouth. This plant is called Dumb Cane precisely because it can cause you to lose your power of speech for some hours. However, it has never caused a death or anything serious. Suddenly I had customers asking why I sold it knowing that it could cause problems with speech. Well, if the general public knew how many South African plants are toxic they would probably give up gardening. The Adenium family (Impala Lily, Swazicum and Obesum) are extremely toxic and the poison is used on arrows throughout Africa to kill large game. Numerous lilies e.g. Arum Lilies, Chincherinches, Snake lilies and many others all contain toxins of varying degrees. The Euphorbia family are all poisonous and the Zimbabwean national flower – the Flame Lily – is especially poisonous and should a dog eat any of the root latex it could be dead within 15 minutes. Surprisingly a porcupine relishes the tubers of this plant with apparently no side-effects. Even many of our indigenous cycads produce toxic seed kernels and others produce fruit pulp that my cause death.
I was therefore quite annoyed by the response to the article on the so-called Killer Plant, but I have since realised that many of us fall for these stories. Don’t know how many people ever read about a family of five being poisoned by drinking the boiled water from a kettle that had been inhabited by a particularly poisonous family of spiders. From then on every morning I was emptying the kettle prior to making coffee and checking the insides. After a few weeks of this my husband pointed out that we had been boiling the kettle each morning for over forty years without all this nonsense and we were quite fine. I stopped, but shortly after that there was a scare with regard to onions. According to the article, leaving an uncooked piece of onion in the fridge to use the following day was a recipe for disaster. All sorts of things happened to onions that sat around in fridges. So …… we stopped leaving any uncooked onion in the fridge and instead placed it on a saucer in the bedroom as this was supposed to ward off all sorts of germs (according to a blurb on the internet) and those who did this during the Great Plague had survived. Also gave that up after a while and then there was the great cling wrap scare. Can’t remember what could happen to people who covered their foodstuffs with clingwrap, but it was bad enough to stop us using clingwap for quite a while. And then there was an infallible (or so we believed) method for killing mosquitoes. This emanated from China and it involved 450g jam tins, a funnel, some stinky stuff inside – place in corners of the room and goodbye mosquitoes. Or so we thought. A month later, after examining all the tins every couple of days and being attacked non-stop by the very mosquitoes that we wanted to kill, we discovered that this was also baloney. I thought I had managed to adjust my aged brain to ignore going viral messages, but alas I am still as susceptible. Last week I received information from a cell-phone friend (supposedly from the police) that from midnight until 3.30 in the morning of the following day all cellphones should be out of reach, out of sight and disconnected. Something awful was going to happen – what it was I can’t remember, but I was taking no chances. My cell phone usually sits on charge on my bedside table during the night ……. in the event of intruders hopefully I will be in a position to phone somebody. Anyway, after due consideration I decided that I didn’t want to take an unnecessary chance. I relocated the cell-phone to the kitchen (which is the furthest point in the house) and left it on charge there. If it exploded, at least I was at the opposite end of the house. Message Ds. Noag was ‘n regverdige man. Groete in Christus.

At the head of the pride Bulletin’s Marketing Manager, Jacques Smuts, attended the launch of the Jaguar E-Pace SUV in Polokwane last week. It was a grand affair with potential buyers and motoring journalists from across the region afforded the opportunity to test drive the newest beast in the big cat stable. Gerhard Smit, sales executive at Jaguar, Land Rover Polokwane, demonstrated the advanced driving technologies the new kitten offers. These include the latest in driving tech such as the active driveline dynamics and the adaptive controlled ride of the new E-Pace. This is where the old school style and elegance of the Jag, meets modern innovation. Though it may look similar to other SUV’s in its caliber, the E-Pace retained its distinctive purr and pulls out of the starting blocks with a surprising swiftness that completely
undermines any thought of driving in a utility vehicle. The E-Pace is Jaguar’s first compact SUV and blends a striking on-road presence with spacious practicali-
od looks Head-turning go bonnet, with its sculpted aunches masculine rear h pé. and lines of a cou as driving conditions dictate and for increased agility, active Driveline allows for up to 100% of rear axle torque to be distributed to the outside rear wheel when cornering. A choice of two petrol and three diesel In-
ty. The SUV achieved a Five Star Euro NCAP rating, confirming the vehicle is among the safest on the market. The vehicle’s intuitive all-wheel drive system transfers torque from the front to the back wheels

Pistons and ponytails Ever heard the expression “you drive like a girl”? Well if you have, take comfort in knowing that it may not be a bad thing. In fact you may have some pretty dainty shoes to fill. Or heels for that matter. Meet the blonde who could kick dirt in your face and make you like it – in a Chevy. Marie-Claude Beaumont was a French woman who raced rally cars during the 60’s. She was only 23-years old when the French rally champion at the time, Claudine Vanson-Bouchet, asked her to
navigate for her at Monte Carlo. The two became a team to be reckoned with and won a number of European rally events. Soon Beaumont took over the driver’s seat. She raced everything from rally cars to big block V8’s and even circuit racing. She won a few noteworthy races too, including a few stages of the Le Mans. She finally retired in 1976 and took up a position in the PR Department for Renault. A few years on she changed careers and became a freelance racing photographer which still does to this day.

No more Brolly Dollies The Formula 1 community is divided at the news of the disbanding of the “Grid Girl” tradition which formed part of the sport for many years. As of this season, there will be no more grid girls taking to the starting line alongside the Formula 1 drivers. Here’s a tissue. It’ll be okay. According to an online interview with the managing director of commercial operations for F1 at Liberty media, Sean Bratches, this decision forms part of a move by the motorsport fraternity to be more in tune with modern societal norms. According to him the practice of employing Grid Girls has very little to do with the actual sport. “While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms. We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world.”
The decision will be effective immediately and right from the start of the 2018 Grand Prix, there will no longer be “Brolly Dollies” spotted out on the track. But that is only applicable to Formula One. The MotoGP community has stood silently looking on… under the shade of umbrellas held over their heads by beautiful bikini-clad bombshells. Not just because bikers tend to conduct themselves in their own way, but because the majority of the riders actually have their wives next to them on the starting grid. That’s right, Andrea Dovizioso, who’s partner is former Monster girl Alessandra Rossi, Alvaro Bautista, recently married Brolly Dolly Grace Barroso, Randy De Puniet also married and then divorced from Laureen Vickers, team LCR’s model in the Playboy days, Pippa Morson, Eugene Laverty’s wife and part of the BSB ‘babe squad’ all met on the track. Try telling anyone of these guys they cannot have their partner alongside them on the grid. For the record, this writer does not particularly like motorsports, but he has no qualms over the sight of a beautiful woman adorning his television screen at the start of arguably one of the most mind-numbing sports events he has ever had the unfortunate disposition of having to watch. What’s your opinion? Let us know by emailing joe@bulletin.us.com. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

So you want to be a racecar driver? So, as many fans of the Grand Prix and even the MotoGP gear up their snack trays and alarm clocks for those early Sunday morning racing marathons, the drivers are hard at work behind the scenes. That’s right, you thought it was easy money, right? “Ja, we just climb into the car and drive around the track bru.” Wrong. Formula one drivers are in peak physical and mental condition and in fact, train extensively right through the year. Due to recent changes in F1 regulations that could cause an increase of 1015% in G-force, McLaren has adjusted its “Driver Performance Program” accordingly. With the cars getting faster and faster as the technology evolves, drivers could be racing around the corners this season at speeds around 45km/h faster than the

previous year. Translate this into the overall stresses on the drivers’ bodies and it makes sense that strength training will be top priority. Two-time championship winner Alonso (35), and the Belgian Vandoorne (24) can rely on state-ofthe-art equipment and technology at McLaren HQ to get into shape. But here are some drills provided by Business Insider UK that you can do at home. 1. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) This can be done on a bike or through running. One rep is a full pace sprint of between 30 and 90 seconds with 90 seconds rest. Do 5 to 10 reps. 2. Inch Worm Open and Close Gate Run Added to this is the rigorous diet plan that the McLaren drivers have to follow diligently which – surprise-surprise, doesn’t include as much red meat as you would expect. Each day starts with a 7am breakfast which consists of 400ml water and a squeeze of lemon juice, Oats porridge with blueberries, honey and sunflower seeds, one medium slice of toast and almond butter and a cup of green tea. There are a number of snacks in between the training sessions until the 12:30 lunch time which consists of tofu stir fry with garlic, mixed vegetables and wholegrain rice noodles. Three squares of dark chocolate and a fresh coffee with soya milk or Green tea. The rest of the day consists of snacking between training and then dinner starts at 18:30. You will be served a small baked potato, grilled Mackerel, Spinach, rocket, tomatoes, cucumber and avocado salad, yoghurt and mixed berries. Bedtime is at 22:00 every night. The Bloodhound 500 is the world’s most successful land speed record chasing outfit, and this year they will attempt to break the 2000 mph record, in South Africa. The project was initially planned for earlier last year at Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape, but was moved to October this year due to bad weather conditions. The event is widely publicised all over the globe and the team has already garnered a significant following online with regular updates on the project’s process and loads of interactive features for the science-minded to become lost in. The Bloodhound is powered by three separate power plants including a 550 bhp supercharged Jaguar V8 engine that drives the rocket oxidiser pump. Marquez looks for 2018 glory The 2018 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season will be the 70th instalment of one of the world’s most supported sporting events. This weekend, the Grand Prix of Qatar will take place on Sunday and is sure to fire up the season which kicked off in January this year in Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit. The Grand Prix of Qatar is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular events on the MotoGP™ calendar. The action there takes place at night under the floodlights of the brilliant Losail International Circuit, which sits around 30 kilometres outside Doha, the capital city of Qatar. Located in the Qatari desert, the Losail circuit held its first event at the venue with the October 2004 Grand Prix of Qatar, won by Sete Gibernau. In 2008 Qatar celebrated the first floodlit Grand Prix in the history of the MotoGP™ World Championship and since 2007 Qatar hosted the season opening race on the GP calendar. The golden boy of MotoGP, Valentino Rossi, seems to be losing his shine as he currently places fifth on the MotoGP World Standings after his rather dismal performance during the 2017 season. He trails the world’s number one rider, the Spaniard Marc Marquez (25), by 90 points on 208. Marquez might be small in stature, weighing in at a mere 59 kilogrammes and standing only 1.68m tall, but certainly knows how to hold his own on the circuit. During the 2017 season, he recorded 18 starts of which landed him six first
places, four second spots and two third placed podium finished. He occupied pole position a total of eight times and now commands the leader board for the second year running.
er sixThe youngest ev pion time World Cham remier after taking the p 17. class crown in 20
Marquez is the youngest ever six-time World Champion after taking his most recent – and fourth – premier class crown in 2017. On the podium in his rookie 125 campaign in 2008,
Marquez won that crown in 2010 before moving up to Moto2™ for 2011. After a tough start, the rider from Cervera went on an incredible winning spree and had closed the gap to Championship leader Stefan Bradl to a handful of points, before a crash in practice for the Malaysian GP saw Marquez forced to cede the fight and miss the two remaining races of the year. Problems with his vision in the off season saw surgery then finally fix the problem, and despite the shortened preparation for 2012 the Spaniard took the crown in stunning style by the Australian GP. Replacing outgoing Casey Stoner in 2013 at the Repsol Honda Team, Marquez won his second ever MotoGP™ race and incredibly took the Championship in his rookie year. Then beginning 2014 with 10 wins in a row, Marquez won that crown in Motegi to successfully defend the title. He begins 2018 as the reigning Champion once more, and will be looking to defend his crown with the Repsol Honda Team.

wageelhoutbome, Afrocarpus falcatus (voorheen bekend as Podocarpus falcatus), geplant.

A good send off for ‘17 In the last match of the 2017 cricket season, hosted in Polokwane, the mighty Nashua Aces continued their victorious form by beating the team from Louis Trichardt (LTT) in just a little more than half the allotted overs of their innings. LTT won the toss and elected to bat first. This would soon prove to have been
an error in judgement as the Aces bowling attack made swift work of the visitors’ batting line up who only managed 121 runs before being retired to the locker room in the 28th over. Next up the Aces took to the crease and hunted down the menial total in just 26 overs to end a very successful season in fitting fashion. As the season progressed Nashua Aces just got better and better and are looking forward to the start of the 2018 season later in the year. Erik Viljoen

about teenagers and their quest for perfect bodies. Unfortunately there was no grade 11 team, but the grade 10’s also came out tops with their topic: Write your own speeches, and scored 79%. The juniors entered two teams each, and successfully followed in the footsteps of the seniors. With their topic: We are under pressure, the grade 9.2 (91%) were awarded first place. The all boys’ team grade 9.1 (80%) obtained a 4th position with their plea to cancel Valentines day. Plasieland is exceptionally proud of the two grade 8 teams. Grade 8.1 (86%) impressed with a first place arguing against spoonfuls leading to obesity. The grade 8.2 group scored (80%) with their plea: Just be yourself, ending in third position overall. Three English teams proudly took to the stand this year, the first time that English learners joined in the fun. And fun it was! The grade 10 team had the adjudicators in stitches with their speech: Selfies self-destruction, while the grade 9s struck a chord with their girl-power topic Women are better qualified to lead than men. The grade 12s ventured into more serious territory with their discussion of mental health. It was a valuable learning opportunity for all the teams, and they will surely be back next year.

Halftyd telling was 0-elk .
Ben Vorster speel more teen Centurion.

The new Interact President at SLC, Jaiden Taggart, attended a Rotary Club of Haenertsburg meeting this week with two of the Club members to present their plans and projects for the year. The theme will be on Education with a focus on assisting, wherever possible, at Glenshiel School. School jerseys for the kids are to be bought and a pencil drive is planned. The fun Easter Egg Hunt will include some games and dress up to entertain the little ones. Well done!! Johannes Willemse, Mrs Joy Park (Interact Teacher-in-charge), Jaiden Taggart, Anneri Thom

Fransies continue streak The mighty Elephants echoed their triumphant roar through the sleepy mining town of Phalaborwa again this weekend when they locked tusks with the visiting Tommie guns from Polokwane. Tom Naude made the trip up north to face Frans du Toit on their home ground in another round of schools rugby and netball league matches. The Fransies were set to continue their winning streak after they sent the Mbombela teams from Lowveld High back to their province in defeat. The Tommie guns have long since been fierce ri-
vals of the Phalaborwa Blues and this weekend’s matches showcased that rivalry in dramatic fashion. On the rugby field, the Fransies were caught off guard for a brief moment which resulted in a narrow 15-19 defeat of their U/14 team. The U/15’s regained redemption moments later when they won their match by one converted try with a score of 28-21. It was the U/16 game however, which showed the promise of the Frans Du Toit spirit when the hosts crippled the visitors’ aspiration of glory with a 47-7 victory. The two senior sides delivered reasonable performances with the Second team losing 10-24 and the First Team clinching a 19-5 victory. The fairer Fransies held their own in the scorching heat on the netball courts when they hosted the Tommies to no less than ten games on the day. Of these, the girls in blue lost four and won six. The U/14A and
B-teams won by 16-13 and lost 9-14 respectively while the three U/15 teams won all their matches 7-4 (C-Team), 31-3 (B-Team) and 14-3 (A-Team). The U/16B-team lost their game by 3 goals to 13 with the U/16Ateam winning by a single net with a score of 10-9. Both the Second teams suffered defeat while the flagship First Ladies brought home the win with a spectacular 27-12 display. Frans du Toit will need to build on the positive momentum of their two-week long victory streak, and learn from their mistakes if they want to end this year on a high note. They will face Bergvlam, one of the dominant schools in Mbombela, in their next league round this weekend in Phalaborwa and everyone is invited to support the Blue and Gold. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
