Mpapatla Modjadji, Regent to the Queen-elect, Masalanabo Modjadji VII, has asked the government to speed up the return of land taken by the colonisers back to the community. He also requested that the government remember that the land was not taken from government, but from the ancestors of the Balobedu people. The area demanded includes Politsi, Deerpak and the now defunct Tzaneen Central Business District. Addressing residents during his inauguration as Regent of the Modjajdji Queenship on Saturday, he said “we have asked the government to speed up the restoration of the land which was taken by the Transvaal Volksraad in 1894 after the battle of Brandboontjies. We had experience that the government listens when we talk to them. Let us be patient and show the world that we are a peaceful nation.” Mpapatla added that the government
of the day, like in the past will fulfill the promises they made to the community of Balobedu. He said that they asked the former premier Ngoako Ramathlodi, to ask president Nelson Mandela to visit the royal house so that they could raise their concerns with the new government of the ANC. “In 1999 President Nelson Mandela visited the Balobedu capital Khethakoni to see our Queen Mokope Modjadji V. The Queen asked the president that he help her restore back her status of Queenship which was lowered by the Apartheid government, that he build her a technical college, restore back the land which was taken away by the apartheid regime, that a car be bought for her and Modjadji College be converted into a science centre,” explained spokesperson for the Balobedu Traditional Council, Phetole Mampeule. “The president responded and

through a donation from Barloworld, built a school. A luxurious Lexus was donated by Toyota and Nissan donated a 4X4 bakkie, and a clinic was erected at Khikhutini. On the issue of the restoration of the land the president said that a commission was appointed to deal with the land claims and the matter of the Queenship will be referred to the commission investigating traditional leadership in the country.” On the 15th of September 2015, former COGTA minister Pravin Gordhan officially informed the Modjadji traditional council of the report and recommendations of the Tolo Commission. In terms of the report the Modjadji traditional leadership was found to be of higher status to the other traditional leadership positions. This meant that the commission on the 31st of March 2016, in terms of section 2 A (3) (a) of the Traditional Leadership Go-
vernance Framework, act 41 of 2003, former president of the republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma, signed and recognised the Queenship of Balobedu. Mampeule further said that what is now left to be delivered by the government is the land which was taken by the Transvaal government. He said the land which the community of Balobedu want restored back include the place where Tzaneen town is located, the farming area in the South which includes the Westfalia avocado orchards and the mango plantations in the Deerpak area North of the Tzaneen town. Could this be the reason behind the GTM’s absolute neglect of their town’s CBD? In one social media post recently, the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, likened the CBD to another Masvingo. (Masvingo is a city in south-eastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvingo Province).

They endured trials for 417 years,” Ramaphosa stated in his address. He went on to explain the relevance of the Balobedu Queenship and its uniqueness, stating that it differs from the rest of the world because this queen is not the wife of a king, but a daughter of royalty. “We urge that the transition from the regent to the Queen-elect be peaceful. Regent Bakhoma Mpapatla will assume leadership on behalf of the Queen-elect, Masalanabo Modjadji VII, who will be installed after she graduates in terms of the Balobedu tradition of the determination of adulthood, customs and traditions.” said Ramaphosa. “Recently, together with the members of the ANC after the conference, we saw fit to introduce the new leaders of the ANC to the descendants of our kings, queens, and the chiefs in our country. bond we have with the royals and we will pull up our socks together with the traditional leaders to build a better society, free of problems.” Ramaphosa went on to reiterate his fight to restore the inequalities of the past and said that his party took the decision in December to “return the land that was taken by the colonisers” back to the people, whether they [colonisers] like it or not. However, he emphasized that the land would be used to farm and create jobs for the jobless communities around the areas. The President explained that Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has made assessments in the seven provinces which are, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Free State, Limpopo, and North West aimed at speeding up the aforementioned process. He finally appealed to traditional leaders to work hand-in-hand with councillors so service delivery could be sped up. — Jan Mafetsa

President Cyril Ramaphosa and his entourage accompanied former president Jacob Zuma to Mokwakwaila stadium on Saturday to attend the restoration of the Balobedu Queenship. Zuma spent the night at the Fairview Hotel on Friday amid a massive power outage which lasted 53 hours in some areas. He joined up with Ramaphosa the following morning and the pair left to the Khethakoni Royal palace where they were to offer the Queen gifts and engage in discussion around the current state of affairs in the area.

Houdini Pair to leave the village
RIGHT ABOVE: Jackie Rudman explains the stress of searching almost daily for her two donkeys. RIGHT: The clever mule who is the brain behind the doings of the Houdini Pair. ABOVE: The Houdini Pair enjoying village life. Photo: Kind permission from Sandi Moore.
Frazzled Haenertsburg local, Jackie Rudman (50), was once again looking for her donkeys. Known as the Houdini Pair, this mother/daughter team has been impossible to contain on Jackie’s fenced farm outside the village. Although she’s had them for the past four years, the last three weeks have been particularly problematic. The farm is up for sale and with constant movement, the gates get left open and the Houdini pair is off. They cross under the busy R71 national road near Lekwar restaurant into the village. There the locals give them constant love and attention and they also graze near the police station. It was when they began overturning the village refuse bins that complaints surfaced. Perhaps a final straw in the visiting of the village saga was as follows. One of the donkeys defecated outside the little school and a mother maintained that poo gives humans tetanus. “That’s horse shit,” said Jackie. Together with SPCA Tracey van den Dool and head honcho Ellie Potgieter, a horse box is poised to transport the Houdini pair to the Blue Donkey Sanctuary in Ofcolaco. Donkeys eat just about anything, including plastic and cardboard. The well-cared for 25-year-old mother with her 12-yearold daughter, a little black mule, became Jackie’s pets when a local moved away from the area. Prior to that the mother had been rescued from an abusive situation, where she pulled heavy cart loads outside
Polokwane. It was in rehab that the mother mated with a miniature horse and the daughter was born. Jackie says the Houdini Pair was fine for about two years. It was almost as though the daughter, the cleverer equine of the two, was planning adventure routes and plotting ways of getting over or under the Bonox fencing. Now the pair goes over, under, through and they’re able to jump down two meters with ease. Over the years Jackie has often rescued them from getting stuck and injured in the fencing. The locals are all in agreement about the mule and chorus, “That small one. Too clever!” When they disappear from the farm Jackie has a reporting network in and outside the village that includes locals as well as the fruit sellers along the R71. Although Jackie will miss the donkeys when they go to the sanctuary, it’s in their best interests and better for Jackie’s peace of mind.
Books arrive to help raise funds Container-loads of books were delivered to the Letaba SPCA earlier this year as a donation from Haenertsburg Rotary Club. The containers were received from a donor organization in Canada and were a bit of a lucky packet of sorts, as nobody was really ever sure of exactly what these containers contained. One container which arrived a little earlier last year, contained pianos. An-
other was filled to the brim with educational text books. This, third container, similarly was said to contain an even bigger load of tomes of wisdom. These books ranged from text books destined for classrooms to novels penned by some of the most applauded word smiths of our time. After lengthy planning and deliberation, the Letaba SPCA decided upon Sunday morning, last week, as the date to break open the container and begin the
arduous business of unloading the precious cargo onto a transport truck. The truck, driven by designated Rotarian chauffer, Bernard van den Dool, then delivered the books to the Rotarian warehouse in town where the equally laborious task of sorting the books alphabetically and by category will start. With the help of the Warriors from up the Kloof, members of the Round Table and SPCA Staff, the stacks of books were moved from container to truck. The massive project kicked off at 09:00 that morning and by late afternoon the last of the pallets had been re-
located to the warehouse. “Once the books have all been categorized we will invite the schools from the area to come and collect the textbooks they can utilize. The novels we will sell to raise much needed funds for the Letaba SPCA which will be put to good use in the upgrading and general maintenance of our kennels,” explained Tracey van den Dool. “We have big plans for the containers too which will include converting them into quarters to house a surgery, an information centre and a storage facility for our food and other supplies.”

Become Kelly’s heroes “Every goodnight kiss may very well be our last one.” George Hepburn (44) and his wife Kelly (28) literally live each day as if it will be their last one together. As we spoke, Kelly struggled with pain caused by a steel plate in her mouth which is literally keeping the bottom half of her jaw attached to her skull. Her mandible and a portion of her maxillawere surgically removed in 2016, to prevent the spread of an extremely rare form of cancerous tumour, Ameloblastoma. Ameloblastoma (from the early English word ‘amel’, meaning enamel and the Greek word ‘blastos’, meaning germ, is a rare, benign or cancerous tumour of odontogenic epithelium (ameloblasts, or outside portion, of the teeth during development) much more commonly appearing in the lower jaw than the upper jaw. While these tumours are rarely malignant or rarely spread to other parts of the body, and progress slowly, the resulting lesions can cause severe abnormalities of the face and jaw. “Basically what happens is that your body generates certain cells which work on restoring teeth. When you have an infectious or cracked tooth, and you leave it untreated, those cells move into your jawbone. There these cells begin to multiply and eventually they inflate and then destroy your jawbone,” Kelly explained. In her case it started with exactly that – a cracked tooth in 2015. Soon, her face began to swell and she went to the nearest dentist. It was thought to be an abscess and she put on a course of antibiotics. She returned two weeks later and the
swelling had not subsided which lead to the discovery of the tumour. The Hepburn’s were referred to a specialist at the Baragwanath hospital who operated on Kelly. Before the operation, however, husband George felt uneasy. “You know, when you go for an operation or a medical procedure of any kind, the last thing you really want to hear is a doctor saying that he is pretty sure he can do it. Kelly was a guinea pig as they had never performed such a procedure before. We had no choice, because we had no medical aid and the doctors told us that we have two options, either we operate or she stands a chance of dying in six weeks as the tumour was only inches away from piercing her skull. And now, here we are.” After removing her left-side jawbone, the doctors at
Baragwanath fashioned a steel structure which they implanted into her face to act as a jaw. She has no teeth on that side of her mouth, and her body has now started rejecting the implant. A gaping hole on the side of her mouth betrays the severity of her situation. The implant has started festering. “The doctors at Baragwanath told us straight that there is nothing they can do to help us and that we would need to seek specialist help. The problem with that is that specialists of this kind do not come cheap and our medical aid refuse to cover the procedure because it was a pre-diagnosed condition.” George set out looking for assistance and came across an organization who may be able to help. BackaBuddy is a South African online crowdfunding platform that is designed to help individuals raise funds for causes they are passionate about. These causes can range from registered non-profit organisations to individuals who need funds for a variety of reasons, including medical procedures. George went through the selection process, filed all the paperwork and submitted endless documents which finally led to his wife’s cause being accepted as legitimate. Kelly’s emergency medical needs were registered with BackaBuddy, published on their site
and has now started receiving donations from all across the globe. “We have no idea how much exactly all of the procedures will cost, but we have received quotations from roughly 10 different doctors and it all points to the region of R430 000 needed to save my wife. We just don’t have that amount of money and so it is our hope that through BackaBuddy, we will have a chance at success. Please, if anyone reading this article can find it in their budget to donate towards saving my wife and helping my family return to normal, we would be forever grateful. We don’t want the money and we know how sceptical people are because of the number of scammers out there, but go and check out www.backabuddy.co.za and you’ll see that they handle all the funds and transfers etc.” So far, Kelly’s profile has raised R22 231.86 towards the surgery and they are still a while away from their R430 000 target. If every member of this community donates just R50 towards Kelly’s surgery, the Hepburn’s will have their chance at a normal life again. Please, visit the site and get involved. Your time will mean the world to a family in desperate need. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message
Granny’s Grumbles - Publicity
“There’s no such thing as bad publicity”. So said Jonas T Barnum, owner of the biggest circus in the world during the eighteenth century. This might have sounded great during that era, but ask the polony manufacturers or Bill Cosby about bad publicity You’ll get a completely different answer. Mr Barnum, I suspect, was actually talking about advertising. Advertising is a totally different kettle of fish and I remember some advertising magnate saying that as long as your product was “in their faces” on a regular ba-
sis, it would sell. I personally don’t agree. There are certain advertisements that will remain forever in my memory and I will never forget the brand they are selling. Who could ever forget the Castrol ads? I don’t even know the name of any other car oil on the market . I also don’t know how much Boet and Swaer (the actors in the commercial) were paid, but however much it was they were worth every cent. Another commercial that was incredibly good was the VW Microbus with David Kramer being pulled up the hill on his bicycle by his braces complete with his guitar. As an eight-year old I remember going to the movies and seeing a Surf commercial. It was an underwater shot of little white microbes leaping out of the soap flakes and attacking dirty little black microbes that had erupted out of the dirty clothing. After an intense struggle the little Surf microbes beat the dirty ones to death! This was heady stuff for an eightyear old. From then on when I was sent to the trading store to buy soap powder for my mom there was no chance of me asking for anything other than Surf. And Lux soap – Who will ever forget Elizabeth Taylor gazing into the movie camera with a bar of Lux pressed against her cheek and telling us in a husky whisper that “Lux – the luxury YOU can afford.” When Lux was eventually available at our local store my mother bought a bar – maybe it wasn’t really an affordable luxury because it was
kept in a porcelain dish on the highest shelf in the kitchen. Only she was allowed to use it – the rest of us had to do with Lifebuoy. Any ex-Rhodesian readers will I am sure remember the Royco Soup commercial that won numerous awards during the 1970s. Four youngsters, two girls and two boys who were probably five years of age were sitting around a small table with a bowl of Royco soup in front of each one. The little girls spoke first “I love this soup” and “It’s delicious”. The first little boy said something like “It’s okay, I suppose” and then we came to the last one at the table, who had a shock of red hair and was looking miserable – he glared at the cameral and said ”I HATE this stuff” and then glared at the plate. I had a friend who worked at the advertising agency and the next time I saw her I remarked on how amazing the youngsters had been – natural actors. She had been involved in the making of that particular ad – two full days and they couldn’t get the little boys to say their lines correctly. At the end of the second day, in desperation, the person in charge told them they would only have to speak one more time to the camera and they could each say exactly what they wanted to say. After that they could go home. Since little rooikop obviously didn’t like Royco soup and had been getting sick of having to take spoonsful – they had to change the punch-line to “You can’t please everybody”. And the rest as they say is history!

Wie is God? Groete in Christus Ds. Fanie 0731671183.

Ark lands at Manor
Noah’s Ark orphanage’s young residents were treated to a day most of them had only ever dreamed of, this weekend. The kids were shuttled down from their rooms to the Manor Restaurant and function venue for day of spoils courtesy of Stefan and Annelie, the Manor’s new management team. There were jumping castles, games, a swimming pool and loads of treats which accompanied the obligatory “burger lunch and coke” which ensured that no tummy went hungry. Of course, as is the case with all successful endeavours, the day could not have been made any more pleasant without the help of some close friends – especially if your closest friends happen to be the members of the Road Hogs biker club.
SPCA thanks Tzaneen Open letter from the Letaba SPCA reads: Round Table Tzaneen hosted an enormously successful ‘R2 Las My’ at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre recently. As you know, we have our monthly “Blikskud Stock our Pantry and Book Sale” on the last Saturday of the month. The 4th of April however, exceeded our wildest expectations. The Round Table brought in an incredible R18 184.00 worth of food for our cats and dogs, as well as some super extras, cleaning materials, tea, coffee, sugar and toilet paper which are all items we do not have to look at spending our hard earned donations on. When two trolleys were filled to the brim, we were smiling. When four were filled, we could not believe our eyes. But to say that we were gobsmacked and lacked words is an understatement when at the end of the morning 10 trolleys were filled!
Round Tablers, thank you from your Letaba SPCA Team, and most importantly, the animals in our guardianship, we have a little room to breathe now and we are forever grateful for your efforts. To the community, visitors to our lovely little town, heartfelt thanks for your contributions to our Society. Our book sales continue to grow and we are thrilled at the number of quality books being donated. We have a strong following and often fill requests of orders for various authors! Our blikskud is always well received and for that too, we would like to thank all of you. In total, with Round Table, Blikskud and Book Sales we raised a whopping R24 313.00 on the 4th of April alone. This goes to show that the Tzaneen community are well aware of their surroundings and will always stand together to help those in need of it. — Letaba SPCA
The Hogs arrived in their droves and brought with them a mountain of toys and gifts which they handed out to every orphan on the day along with a bright new t-shirt. The bikers spent some time with the little ones before hitting the road once more. “We decided that the orphanage could use our help. Children are very dear to us and we believe that given their backgrounds, a day like this is something that they will not soon forget,” said Annelie. “A very special word of thanks is order to our other special friends who helped make this possible. They are Pieter from NTT Toyota and Marco from NTT Isuzu, Tzaneen Koelkamers, Letaba Fruit and Veg and Premjee’s Liquor.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Humanity must change to survive dance at every New Jersey restaurant, for every take-out meal and for every supermarket. Yet New Jersey has a recycling project in place. Americans use 500-million plastic straws every single day, and most of them end up as trash in the ocean, causing pollution and harming sea life. Plastic straws are made of polypropylene but due to their small size most facilities cannot process plastic straws, meaning they end up in landfills. Most plastic straws make their way into the world’s lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. When it breaks down into smaller pieces the fish eat them and this makes its way onto our dinner plates. On a recent EgyptAir international flight, it was heartwarming to notice that the airline does not use plastic cutlery but has converted to non-disposable cutlery. South Africa is trying to do its bit in decelerating plastic usage. Some restaurants no longer display plastic straws and customers have to ask for a straw. Paper and bamboo straws are sometimes sold but carry a price. Many parts of the world have recycling projects in place. However global figures are still dismal. Take for example the UK. That country uses 13-billion plastic water bottles a year, and of that only three-million gets recycled. The UK is now introducing glass milk bottles. Provided you don’t break glass it has a life-span of 4,000 years. INSERT – Hundreds of flexible plastic straws in a New Jersey store. Do you recall plastic bags clinging to diamond mesh fences on the side of South African country roads on windy days? Those colourful en masse plastic decorated fences are now a distant memory. That’s all thanks to the drive in South Africa to reduce the use of plastic bags by making shoppers pay for the once free bags. Eight million tonnes of plastic enter oceans from landfills every year. Plastic pollution is a world-wide epidemic with the worst offender being Asia. Americans, with a population of over 550-million, are not far behind. They still get free plastic bags at the check-out. Some of the 50 states are more mindful of plastic pollution than others. Many have recycling projects in place. In the state of New York plastic straws are in abun-

Astrobaan ingehuldig
Dié sand, sowel as die speel-oppervlakte moet nou so staan
— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Phalaborwa’s Cycling Club have had their fair share of cyclists compete in some of the country’s biggest and most anticipated events. This past weekend two of their riders completed the world famous Cape Town Cycle Tour. It was the 40th running of this event which attracts thousands of cyclists from all over the world to the mother city in aid of raising funds for two notable charities including the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and the Rotary Club of Claremont. The final race is in many respects the headline event in which the Lifecycle week culminates. The Lifecycle Week kicks off with the MTB Challenge, held out in the Cape Winelands on the Saturday, and then the Junior cycling event on the Sunday. This future-star event is hosted in the Cape Town Stadium Precinct, in the shadow of Table Mountain, which is also the venue for the registration process each entrant must follow to collect their race number for Sunday’s main event, before taking in South Africa’s biggest cy-
