Several municipalities including Mopani are to face a bleak future after the Treasury refused to return the more than R15 billion invested with the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS) Mutual Bank. The money was allegedly illegally invested with VBS against the advice of the Treasury. The collapse of the municipalities which include Mopani and Giyani come just a week after the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) could not pay their employees on time. A senior Treasury official said that “there were concerns that because of their (municipalities) reckless investments at VBS, some of the municipalities may no longer be viable. Some of their finances are in tatters and will have to be put under administration. How can a municipality without half of its operating revenue survive? For example, Giyani invested R158 million of its R302 million operating revenue.” The executive added that the newly established Lim 345 Municipality in Vhembe invested R122m out of its R244 million oper-
their deposits. There may be very little for municipalities which deposited illegally. It is general principle that no bail-outs are provided to municipalities.” Makoma Makhurupetsi, who was responsible for local government by the time the monies were invested with VBS, has now joined the department of transport and safety. Political commentator Thabiso Kotane, has said though it is common knowledge that the ruling elites received kickbacks from the bank, it was surprising that no action has been taken against the culprits. “Premier Stan Mathabatha said the departments that receive disclaimers would be disclaimed but so far nothing has happened to those who received the disclaimers. The Former MEC for Cogta in the province has been promoted to another department where she seems to be doing well despite the fact that where she came from, there is fire raging without any sign of abatement. It is surprising,” added Kotane. — Jan Mafetsa
ating revenue. Greater Tubatse Municipality (Burgersfort) invested R210m of its R548m revenue. The money which was invested with the bank which once bailed out former President Jacob Zuma to the tune R7.8m, was part of municipalities’ annual budget and not extra money that the councils could function without. “Unfortunately they had lost that money and it is only a matter of time before you hear that some of them are not able to pay salaries. The exposure of these municipalities to the VBS was too large compared to their operating revenue according to a Treasury document sent to municipalities last week. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has prioritised payments to retail operators and stockvels who lost money when the bank was put under curatorship” The document which was sent to municipalities said “in line with the mandate of protecting the most vulnerable clients, the restructuring will focus on the retail depositors. At this stage they will get almost all

Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) has played down reports that Water and Sanitation minister, Gugile Nkwinti, has launched forensic investigations after R 3,5 billion, allocated to provide the people of Giyani with water, has now run out. The residents still do not have water. The project called, The Nandoni Water Scheme, was implemented by the former minister Nomvula Mokonyane, in 2014 after a visit by president Jacob Zuma to the area. Initially, the project which was to be implemented and monitored by Lepelle Northern Water after the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) was stripped of the right to be a water authority, cost about R520 000 which was later inflated to R2 billion. To date, the money spent on the project rose to R3.5 billion and more money has been requested from the department. The move which forced the minister to visit the area last week to do inspections. Addressing the residents of Giyani, Nkwinti said that his department has launched forensic
investigations. He said that though the project was launched before he joined the department, it was of much concern that still more money is sought from the department to complete the project. Lepelle Northen Water (LNW) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Phil Legodi has denied that the minister has launched an investigation into the project and said that the minister wanted to know how much money is still needed to complete the project. He said the problem with the media is that they report the money as ‘missing’ and make it appear as though nothing was done. “We were expected to build the infrastructure and thereafter provide people with water at least 200 meters from their doorstep as demanded by law. But at the moment all infrastructure had been put in place and the problem is people
have to travel many kilometres to get water because the project is not yet completed,” added Legodi. He further stated that in the past people were getting water from the rivers, and currently they drink clean water despite it being far from the homes. He said the project began in 2009 and now half of the job is completed. The second phase of the project will include bulk water reticulation which entails the building of reservoirs, and the installations of street taps. “The deadline for the completion of the project is around three more years. So far 55 300 kilometres radius has been completed and the work included the collection of water from the Nandoni dam to Nsabi dam in the Giyani area. The work is not expected to be finished overnight as access to some of the areas is very hard and it is why we think the project could be finished only in 2022.”
SALGA admits failing the people The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) has admitted that there was an error when most municipalities in the province invested their money with the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS) Mutual bank. The organisation threw the blame at the doorstep of the Treasury arguing that they could have been alerted of the problem in the first place, as they are the ones briefing the department on the state of municipalities, monthly. SALGA Limpopo chairperson, Thembi Nkadimeng, who is also the mayor of the Polokwane Municipality (PM) said the municipalities could not be blamed alone for investing with VBS because the Treasury, which is sent reports every month on the financial state of municipalities, should have advised the municipalities timeously against investing. “It was not the first time that municipalities had invested their money with the banks, but what is different with this investment,
Jaques van Niekerk Optometrist

is that there was a change in the term of the investment. In many municipalities the matter came to head when the monies supposed to be invested for about six months, was changed to a year. It is the reason it is not possible to disinvest,” she added. “According to section 71 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), municipalities are allowed to invest their monies with the banks as long there is an approval from the Treasury. So in this instance when accounting officers (municipal managers) sent their reports to the Treasury as per the norm, they were not advised that they were treading on the wrong paths of investments.” Nkadimeng said that as far back as 2014 the municipalities were investing with the bank and they never encountered any problem with their money. She said about seven municipalities in Limpopo have so far invested a billion which was described by the Treasury as illegal investments.
Stand van Damme Dam Levels
“During the meeting with the Treasury we were told that there is no money which will be given to municipalities. We admit that we have failed our people and it will be wrong to say we are not prepared to learn from our mistakes. We have so far taken steps to rectify the problem.” She further stated that the municipal mangers are the ones to be blamed when problems such as this occur. She said they were going to meet the minister of Corporative Government and traditional Affairs Zweli Mkhize to discuss the matter. Of the 112 councils involved in the VBS deals, 27 are from Limpopo. The bank was put under curatorship by the Reserve Bank after it was found that it operated like a loan shark. So far it has invested more R15 billion belonging to municipalities who invested despite being advised against that by the Treasury. — Jan Mafetsa Foto deur: Willie & Mariette Source: www.dwa.gov.za Information updated: 21/5/2018

A buffalo killed PH Claude Kleynhans (54) from Tzaneen in what’s believed to have been a freak accident. The tragedy happened on the banks of the Levubu River at the Makuye private game reserve shortly before midday on Tuesday. Claude was owner of Guwela Hunting Safaris. It’s believed the buffalo hit his femoral artery and Claude, one of the country’s finest ethical hunters, died almost instantly. Claude’s ex-wife Corina van der Merwe, speaking from Claude’s farm in Agatha, said that Claude and his party had shot and killed a buffalo as planned. They were going to clear the bush around the carcass and load it when another buffalo blindsided Claude. Well-liked Claude, a fervent Christian, grew up in Modjadjiskloof and joined the SAPS before moving into the PH world. He knew the bush well and understood conservation as well as trophy hunting. He leaves three children, Marina, Jolene and Alec, his father Johnny, and siblings Jannie, Elizabeth, Keri-Lynn and Anton. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Police deny Scott-Crossley case was dropped The police in Maake have denied claims that the case of attempted murder against Hoedspruit farmer, Mark Scott-Crossley was scrapped from the court roll after the victim Victor Mabunda dropped the charges against Scott-Crossley. It was alleged that Mabunda’s family was paid off by Scott-Crosley’s family. This follows rumours doing the rounds in police circles in the area that the case had been swept under the carpet. Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt Col Moathse Ngoepe, could not confirm it but referred us to the local police who refuted the allegations. Police spokesperson, Const
Emmanuel Manabe, told Bulletin that it is not true that the case had been swept under the carpet. Manabe said the case is still on the court roll and “he will appear in July but I cannot confirm the date at the moment.” The case of attempted murder against the controversial Hoedspruit farmer emanated from an incident in Hoedspruit in December of 2016, when a farm worker from a neighbouring farm, Mabunda, was knocked down by a vehicle allegedly driven by Mark Scott-Crossley. The victim was returning from a shop when he was attacked. Following the incident, Scott-Crossley disappeared and
Rhino parts found In a concerted effort to fight the scourge of crime, the SAPS in Limpopo have implemented various crime fighting strategies including roadblocks and stop-and-searches which are still yielding positive and meaningful results. On Friday evening, 18th of May, in the Hoedspruit Policing area outside Phalaborwa, three (03) suspected members of a rhino poaching syndicate were arrested at a road block along the R40. The roadblock was part of a joint operation which composed of members from SAPS, the Hoedspruit Farm Watch, the Young Civilians on Patrol (YCOP) and the Community Policing
Forum (CPF). They were manning a stop-and-search road block when they stopped a speeding motor vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, over R200 000 in cash, an ear, a nose and a tail believed to be of a white rhino, were found inside the vehicle. The three suspects were taken into custody and it was found that one of them was recently arrested for a rhino poaching case and was out on R5 000 bail. The three suspects are aged 25, 39 and 49 appeared in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s court that following Monday where they were denied bail. This was part of the Provincial Operation “Uya Pamwe” which in turn is part of the FIELA II campaign.
was later arrested in Pretoria. So far Scott-Crossley has appeared in court just twice in connection with this latest case. By the time he was charged, Scott-Crossley was still serving a five years suspended sentence for murder, after he was convicted of the murder of his farm worker, Wilson Chisale, who died after he was thrown into a lions’ den on Scott-Crossley’s farm. The case has raised concerns as anytime he appears in court he is met with protests from the community supported by the EFF and the ANC. It is common knowledge that Scott-Crossley’s sister, Tracy-Lee is believed to have been
the very first victim of the infamous Gert van Rooyen and his accomplice, Joey Haarhof. On the 1st of August 1988, fourteen-year old Tracy-Lee Scott-Crossley of Randburg disappeared. She was seen by witnesses climbing into a Volkswagen Beetle outside the Cresta Shopping Mall. A nationwide police search and hypermarket poster campaign was launched. Her brother, who had declined an offer to go with her, was severely guilt-ridden and traumatised by her disappearance. Many have speculated that this traumatic event may have been responsible for Mark’s troubled adult life.
What were those lights in the sky? Strange lights were spotted in the skies over Phalaborwa on Monday evening. According to numerous witnesses living on the outskirts of town, seven distinct lights were noticed hovering over the airspace near the PMC lookout point. “The lights seemed to hover over the lookout point for a while and then suddenly they were right above the airport,” said a
local eyewitness who requested anonymity. “My family and I watched them for about five minutes. There was no sound coming from them and the lights did not flicker like that of an aircraft. Moments later they disappeared.” If any residents noticed the lights on the evening in question, please send an email to joe@bulletin.us.com.
PMC copper anodes thief nabbed A 37 year old suspect was arrested in Phalaborwa for the alleged theft of copper anodes by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on the 17th of May. The Hawks received a tip-off that the suspect would arrive on the premises of the Palabora Min-
ing Company and steal copper anodes. The Hawks swiftly operationalized the information. The suspect was cornered by the Police at the mine and he was found in possession of copper anodes with the estimated value of R240 000. Preliminary investigations led
the Hawks to another house in Khujwana Village outside Tzaneen where more copper anodes were recovered, but the owner of the house was not found. The suspect is expected to appear in Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court whilst investigations continue.

We are still awaiting answers to our enquiries into the suspicious circumstances around a motor vehicle accident at The Manor Lodge two months ago. The accident occurred along the Deerpark Road in the direction of Tzaneen just after midnight on the morning of the 24th of March. A marked SAPS vehicle crashed through the Manorvlei Liquors sign post, lifted off into the air and came to a grinding halt against a large tree a few hundred metres away. The driver, a police officer who told bystanders that he was from Phalaborwa, exited the vehicle and allegedly swapped places with another police officer on the scene before the para-

medics arrived. Bulletin spoke to three separate witnesses who all stated that they saw the driver of the vehicle switch places with another man shortly after the accident. All three of them also said that the original driver was taken away from the scene. They also said that they saw a lowbed truck from Bona Towing Services in Nkowankowa arrive to take the wrecked vehicle away. The accident scene was immaculately clean when Bulletin arrived there the following morning. There was only a scratch of paint against the tree bark and skid marks along the path the vehicle travelled to indicate that any accident took place there. Dockets were also picked up off the road by members of the public allegedly related to an ongoing murder investigation of a local retailer. We issued the police with an enquiry and to date we have still not received any detailed report on the incident from their communications office. Many questions therefore remain unanswered.
Pipe fixed at last
More than six months ago a local Haenertsburger saw a steady and large amount of water flowing into a drain, opposite Lekwar restaurant, next to the fruit seller on the R71. The local went to the nearby SAPS and complained several times but to no avail. In frustration she approached the Bulletin. An article was written but there was no SAPS reaction. At a meeting with the GTM the matter was raised again and reported in the newspaper.
This resulted in a reply from Councillor Machimana of the GTM. He stated firmly that the problem was to be dealt with by police management. The matter thus landed with Brigadier Enslin who immediately sent out a contractor to assess the situation. It was found that a 63mm pipe had burst underneath the concrete. The pipe was fixed immediately and a new concrete slab was thrown.

Stolen netting used for trader stalls A dentist in Tzaneen has suffered at the hands of the street traders who operate along the side of the R71 highway. The national road dissects Tzaneen from Phalaborwa to Polokwane. This has long been a contentious issue among the Tzaneen community with many citizens wanting the hawkers removed. Some, including certain local journalists, have defended these informal traders. “They are trying to make a living and at least they are not stealing.” According to Dr Dion Coertzen of Drs Van Niekerk & Coertzen dental practice in Agatha Street, these hawkers have stolen shade netting off two of their carports inside the Proforum building’s premises. “I arrived at work one morning last week and noticed that the shade netting had been cut away from the carports’ steel support frames,” he explained. “It wasn’t blown off by any wind or removed by the maintenance people. I could see they were roughly cut from their fasteners and removed.” Later that day he was returning to Tzaneen from Modjadjiskloof along the R71 highway and noticed his shade netting wrapped around one of the shanty street vendor stalls as he entered town. He photographed the netting and opened a case of theft with the local SAPS. “I could clearly see that this netting was mine as I recognized both the shape and the colour. Our practice is two blocks away from these vendors. It is too compelling to be mere coincidence. Hopefully the police will bring this guy to book.” Shade netting is used by these vendors as protection against the elements, particularly the unforgiving Lowveld sun. A net the size of which was stolen, ranges in price from R2 500 to R4 000 depending on the percentage cover and the thickness. At the time of going to print this week, we had received no further information regarding the matter and we believe that the police investigations will continue. The belligerent issue of these street hawkers who il-
legally sell their goods to motorists has been reported in Bulletin a total of 16 times during the course of the last year. To date however, nothing has been done by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, or provincial law enforcement, to address this matter. Excuses from the municipality have included the fact that the R71 is a national road and therefore does not fall under their jurisdiction which by default means that they cannot remove the hawkers. This despite the fact they are able to generate a significant income off speeding motorists through the erection of their speed enforcement cameras just opposite the hawkers. We approached the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) who in turn explained that though they were the custodians of the R71, they could not police the road as they do not have their own law enforcement arm. It is absurd. Farmers in the area suffer thousands of Rands worth of damages through the consistent theft of their citrus and avocado crop which is thought to be sold by these very hawkers. In fact, just last year this was proven to a large extent when K9 Security officer, Marius Jacobs, arrested a woman at her home near Tarentaalrand and recovered R60 000 worth of avocados stolen off a farm in the Agatha area. That woman admitted to stealing the fruit and selling it to the street vendors. The spot where these vendors erect their shanty stalls is riddled with ‘no-hawking’ signs. They have no permits to trade there either which when coupled to their blatant disregard of the signs forbidding trade along that section of highway, are prosecutable criminal acts. They are purposefully endangering the lives of all motorists along that stretch of national road and the GTM’s quite passionate dismissal of all complaints against them is indeed food for suspicion. Despite our best efforts, we have still not managed to convince locals to stop supporting these traders which only perpetuates the problem. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Some claim it was named after Olympian Jim Thorpe, while others argue it was just a nonsense suffix.

Around the world fun at Ben Vorster Vossies ‘around the world’ Open Day for next year’s grade 8s was held on Wednesday 16 May. Grade 7’s from far and wide … Antjies, Klofies, Bergies, Larries... everyone was on Vossie ground. The theme this year: JOURNEY……. The journey to your future. Everyone wants to journey to success. At Ben Vorster we dream with you! All flights were fully booked. The famous Bok van Blerk, was also on board Flight BV2019 to take the grade 7’s around the world. Many countries were visited. Captain Denysschen and his flight assistants in full red uniform were at the controls, welcoming everyone and making sure of their safety. Safety is first priority on Flight BV2019. Captain Denysschen made sure that the fledglings coming to Ben Vorster next year felt welcome and sure of their future flight. All are now buckled up for the ascent of the Vossie flight which will take them on
their dream journey to success from 2019. The flight assistants made sure of meals, snacks and Vossie-water. They also made sure of passenger co-operation at every landing. At the Toekie Vorster Hostel everyone had a ‘let’s-stretch’ exercise with Toekie , our friendly female buffalo, who taught them a few dance movements before they were due to descend to Vossie land for a performance with Bok van Blerk. Head prefects, Erik Meintjies and Nielia Blignaut, together with their student council, checked registration forms and made sure that everyone felt very welcome and ready for an unforgettable visit to Vossie Land! All the products at Vossie Land are pure, and parents of the passengers were assured, by Captain Denysschen, that their children will be safe and sound and cherished here. Only the best educators and coaches are good enough in Vossie Land. There is always a place for Player 23 and he/she is developed to the best of
his/her ability! At 12 noon, a break was taken at Buffelskraal Restaurant before everyone proceded to the wellknown Vossie pavilion to enjoy a show by Bok and Toekie. The Toekie-line dance was a ‘hit’on the programme. All were welcome to pose with the stars and obtain their autographs. After singing with all their hearts, the Vossies – old and young – returned to their homes knowing that BenVorster is a school of colour and sound, of plenty and thanks and the best in the land. Visit our Facebook page for photos of the day, or put your name on the “Future Vossie” web and come and fulfil your dreams with us. We are waiting for you!

A tribute to an inspirational teacher As Stanford Lake College celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s appropriate to reflect on an incredible man also a founder teacher at the school. Due to his contribution to the community and school, a girls’ boarding house was constructed in 2005 and named in his honour. That man was the late Ken Shuter. Ken, born on the 25th June 1945, came from Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal to teach English and Drama. Two years later Ken’s life changed when he couldn’t hold the chalk to the blackboard. A neurosurgeon diagnosed Motor Neuron Disease - a progressive, fatal, slow and debilitating disease that causes weakness and
wasting of muscles. There is no cure. Ken gave up teaching and moved into a cottage in Haenertsburg. A month later he could no longer walk without a Zimmer frame. He flew to Austria to see friends; he went on a barge down a river in France and visited friends around the world. Then he became wheelchair-bound. When he could no longer smoke, local Mike Strever affixed an ingenious contraption to his wheelchair. It held the cigarette and had a receptacle for the dropped ash. Ken had a passion for the outdoors.
Above: Ken’s bench finds its final resting place at the village cemetery. Left: Ken Shuter, already diagnosed but still relatively healthy.
He’d been a gymnastics coach, parachute instructor, wilderness trails officer and, in Austria, a ski instructor. He’d also swam 12 Midmar Miles and ran seven Comrades Marathons. He wanted to do one more Comrades Marathon. That, coupled with his desire to bring his disease into the public arena, spurred him and the community to make this a reality. Locals together with a cycle shop Pauline Burton-Page from the UK seated on Ken’s bench designed a chariot for Ken’s eighth in the arboretum. Comrades Marathon. The brakes were hand-operated; it had BMX wheels and a racing-car seat with straps to hold him upright. It was decided to hold Ken’s 90 km Comrades in March 2003 and not wait until the actual June event. The music was playing, the banners were up and the Comrades Chairman wished him luck. So Ken began his last Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. He was pushed by Malcolm Powell, the friend he ran his first Comrades with in 1978. Each runner pushed for a kilometer before handing over to the next. Historian Louis Changuion pushed, his GP, Dr Richard Gorbaszewicz pushed. Ken’s nurse, Irene Barry was near him in one of the ambulances. There were 32 runners, old friends, new friends, past pupils and colleagues. Five Pietermaritzburg traffic police vehicles and two ambulances accompanied Ken. Carte Blanche presenter, Derek Watts, was there. The aim was to beat Ken’s previous best time of eight hours and 55 minutes. As the runners and Ken approached West Street in Durban all 32 runners got out of their vehicles and stormed towards the finish line together. The Comrades Chairman was at the Durban City
Hall to congratulate Ken. He had broken his record in a time of seven hours and 30 minutes. It qualified for silver, but Harmony Gold presented Ken with a gold Comrades medal. At the awards dinner that evening, the Comrades Association presented Ken with seven bronze medals to replace those he’d won but given away to children over the years. When Ken’s Comrades was flighted on Carte Blanche, the Iron Crown pub erected a four-tiered stadium for one of the biggest turnouts of villagers. Ken had taught at the Old Malthouse in Dorset in the UK and made friends with fellow teacher Tony Burton-Page and his wife Pauline. Through them Graham Edwards, a chef and caregiver, flew out to nurse Ken. Dwindling funds became an issue and Graham returned to the UK. Ken was getting weaker and losing weight. His sister, Merle, moved him into frail care in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal. Four years after being diagnosed Ken died shortly after his 60th birthday in September 2004. An evening memorial was held at the village cemetery. Ed Hillary sang “Danny Boy” at Ken’s request. Ed’s wife, Jane, read a poem entitled ‘When Thursday Comes.’ When Ken was diagnosed and in the UK with friends, he discussed his problems with his airline ticket. He remarked that he was hoping to leave by Thursday. Someone thought that Ken had said he was going to be dead by Thursday. From then on it was a standard joke and Ken would refer to his inevitable death by saying When Thursday Comes. The poem was also read at his memorials at Michaelhouse and at the Old Malthouse. A solid black marble bench, in memory of Ken, resides at the village cemetery engraved with his favourite inscription.

Larries herleef hul kleuterdae
O/15A-span in aksie

The ‘M’ in victory
Duan Gubitz (u/16) scores a try.
This past Saturday was filled with sports action accross the region and in Plasieland it was no different. The last general winter sports day was hosted at Plasiepark, on the grounds of Merensky High School and saw teams from Piet Potgieter travel to the Lowveld. The visitors from Piet Potgieter High School in Mokopane were surprised by the cold, rainy conditions resulting in all netball games being cancelled. The hockey and rugby games however, continued. On the hockey field, the Merensky girls triumphed. The U/14 team won with an as-
tonishing 7 goals to zero while the U/15’s and U/16’s were held to stalemates in matches that ended 1-1 and 0-0 respectively. 25 Minutes into the Second team game, with the scoreboard reflecting 2-0 for Merensky, the game was stopped due to heavy rain. The “Allesbeste” First team gave their best, boasting a 1-0 victory. On the rugby field everybody sat up and took notice of the Merensky junior teams with the U/14A’s and U/14B’s winning 26-24 and 38-5 respectively. The U/15A team drew 12-all, while the U/16A’s chalked up a mem-

orable 41 points against only 5 for the Potties. A 27-0 win for the Merensky Thirds raised the hopes of another good run for the two Merensky senior teams, but this was soon
dimished when the Second team suffered a 12-20 defeat. The first team suffered a similiar fate and lost theier match by 17 points to 44.

Stanford Lake College unveiled their water-based FIH-approved astro hockey pitch last weekend during their 20-year birthday celebrations. The pitch is the highest elevated pitch in the country and makes for the perfect venue to host national (and international) hockey matches. The local club league finals will be played here at the end of June.
A first of its kind! The very first Federation for International Hockey (FIH) fully accredited water-based astro-pitch was unveiled on the grounds of Stanford Lake College this weekend. The state-of-the-art turf is the first of its kind in South Africa and at an altitude of around 1 400 meters, could very well be the highest elevated hockey pitch in the country. The unveiling of the spectacular new facility formed part of Stanford Lake College’s 20th birthday celebrations and was attended by staffers and sporting teams from St Dunstan’s College. During the two day celebration which started last week Friday, the two teams participated in various sporting disciplines including soccer, rugby, netball and hockey in a series of friendly matches. As a show of respect, the astro was unveiled in a ceremonious fashion with the ‘Old Boys’ having a chance to run out on to the new pitch. The match was followed by games between Stanford Lake College and St Dunstan’s before the evening’s formal black tie dinner. During the dinner another first was announced – the formation of the Stanford Lake College Society. This society brings together the Alumni, parents and teachers (past and present) as well as anyone who has contributed in any way to the success of the College over the past two decades. It was
a magnificent affair with all who attended enjoying the opportunity to reminisce about the successful journey the College has made. Despite a damp Saturday, the two schools went toeto-toe on the sports pitches with Girl’s Hockey and boys’ rugby taking centre stage. A function to officially open the astroturf was enjoyed by those who have, over the years, helped ensure that this superb facility became a reality. The two First Team captains cut the celebratory cake before the Headmaster of Stanford, Mr Craig Carolan, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr Don Westcott, cut the ribbon to officially open the new facility. The 1st XV Girl’s teams then con-
cluded the opening as they played their fixture. To finish off the day, the College hosted a ‘Food and Music’ festival where Jacques Mouton, Bad Peter, Barefoot Breeze and Rubber Duc played
to a dedicated, hardy group of supporters who braved the cold and wet weather. Those who stayed were treated to some exceptional music with all four acts providing a superb show for the crowd. “We are grateful for the support of our sponsors who made the weekend the great success it was,” said Rona McGaffin, media liaison for Stanford Lake College.
