The management of Ga-Kgapane Hospital outside Modjadjiskloof was changed after patients complained on Facebook. Their complaints centred on lengthy waiting times and nursing staff more interested in their personal issues than patient care. The matter prompted Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Pophi Ramathuba, to descend on the hospital (unannounced) last week Thursday where she experienced the complains first hand. Ramathuba said that she received the complaints on her personal Facebook profile from the members of the public. “Silently, I sent senior officials to the institution to investigate the allegations so they could report back upon their return. When the allegations were confirmed, we then went to the hospital where we found people waiting in these lines to be served. Officials were found in offices while patients were waiting,” she said. The good doctor explained her shock and disbelief after having spent some time with a number of patients at the facility. During
her visit she asked the patients how they felt about the services rendered at the hospital. Her concerns were vindicated when some of the patients said they arrive at the hospital in the mornings and leave in the evenings due to poor service there. She said the officials were not fired and instead were given new responsibilities. A new nursing manager and others were returned to positions they were initially hired to do. Ramathuba added that it was not the first time she shuffled around the management of hospitals. When complaints were lodged regarding the service delivery at the Malamulele and Letaba hospitals, the institutions were visited and acted upon. “I had one-on-one conversations with the managers at the hospitals and they were given other less demanding responsibilities,” added Ramathuba. This week Bulletin received complaints of similar nature regarding the services offered at Van Velden Hospital in Tzaneen. One elderly patient spoke to this reporter at our of-
fices on Wednesday morning. “I receive my chronic medication from Van Velden every month and I have learnt how the system works,” he explained. “If you arrive at the hospital at 12:50 in the afternoon, you will find not one doctor, or psychiatrist available to see you. They all go on lunch at 13:00 and return only at 14:30 or sometimes even 15:00. Effectively this means that there are no doctors at Van Velden hospital for three hours every day. Patients are left in reception area where we have to sit and wait for fear of losing our spot in the line.” Perhaps the public should vent themselves to the personal Facebook profile of Dr Ramathuba to force change at this once outstanding medical facility. Alternatively you can contact the Department of Health on 015 293 6000 or on their hotline on 0800 91 9191. Should that not provide any joy, feel free to contact the Department of Health’s spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana personally on 083 444 2645.

Residents of Tickeyline at Bokgaga (Ward 30) chastised ANC branch leaders for putting the interests of the party ahead of the needs of their community. This came after the ANC Branch General Meeting (BGM) held at Montsheni Primary School, resolved that the provision of water should be sped up as that will enable the party to conduct door to door election campaigns with ease. The minutes of the meeting which was leaked, read “the BEC engaged with Mopani District Municipality (MDM) to address the issues of water within our ward and this engagement emanated as a result of our engagement with the GTM PMT. We hope the incoming leadership will pursue this matter together with the ward councillor as water remains a crisis and it might
pose negative impact on our election campaigns.” Except for the ANC, most political parties have already launched their electioneering campaigns as part of preparations for the provincial and national elections expected to take place in April next year. Rosina Sathekge, community leader in ward 24 said it was insensitive for the branch of the ANC to prioritise the provision of water only because the elections are just around the corner. “The budgets that are adopted by the councils are called ‘election budgets’ aimed at winning voters at the last minute because it was once again that time of the year where the votes of the people mattered.” “We who are not voting for the ruling party, we know that
when it is election time tricks are plentiful to win the votes of the masses. Thereafter, the triumphalist start fighting among themselves as to who gets which tender labelled as work among comrades. It is not surprising that water will then be delivered to the people in trucks,” added Sathekge. The meeting in its organisational report, has noted with concern “Factionalism, inconsistence of signatures of some members before the meeting could take place after which a quorum of 50%+1 was reached, parallel election programmes by alliance partners, lack of the ANCYL and ANCWL structures in the ward, misunderstandings on the cut off dates for the audits of membership and the disruptions of BGMs.” The BGM was held solely to
elect delegates to the provincial conference to be held next Friday. During the meeting it was recommended that the branch have a bank account, work hard to bring unity, discipline those transgressing the rules, hold bilateral meetings with the alliance partners if they exist, and educate members on the audits of membership. The branch, comprised of 225 members, has 168 members in good standing and it quorated with 84 members to decide for the more than 2 000 voters in the area of Tickeyline. The meeting also reported that proportional councillor (PR), Irene Rapatsa, who was an additional member has been shown the BEC door after she failed to attend three BEC meetings consecutively as per the constitution. -Jan Mafetsa
Royals still back old man Magwaza The chief of the Nkuna Traditional Authority, Hosi Muhlava II Samuel Shiluvana, has assured the community of Khujwana that head of the Magwaza Traditional Committee, Ben Magwaza Khumalo, is still their leader and will remain so as long as the royal palace so wishes. The chief was represented by the Chieftainess N`waGija Mhanaribye Shiluvana, at the Magwaza traditional club house on Saturday. The event was attended by members of the traditional court, committee members, local teachers and principals of schools, pensioners and the community at large. The moment was seized to allay fears that Headman Ben Magwaza was to be removed as the headman of the Magwaza-Khumalo clan. This follows meetings which were called in the village propagating that the chief remove Khumalo, and a new one be installed. The chieftainess who was accompanied by members of the royal family female brigade,

said “As the royal family we are proud of the service the old man is doing to the community. It is encouraging to see that pensioners are still being taken care of by the traditional authority through our local headmen. When we came here a few years ago, tents were bought by the headman to serve the community and today we are here to celebrate with our pensioners.” “We, as the royal family appreciate the good deeds done by the Magwaza community and we therefore urge other traditional leaders to emulate them and work hard for the development of the community and the needy such as pensioners and children. It is important and rare that we still have pensioners who consider the needs of others in their communities.” Shiluvan told the packed Magwaza traditional court that the royal family still believe in the capacity of the headman Magwaza to execute his job with expertise. The pensioners and children were provided with tradition-

al regalia with the photos of the chief. They were entertained with traditional music and dances as performed by the pensioners and a group of Tsonga clad traditional regalia. Still in the area the office of the Limpopo Land claims commissioner will be addressing the community of the Muhlava clan about the developments of their land claims which were lodged last year. The event will take place on Thursday (today) at the Nkowankowa community hall starting at 09h00. - Jan Mafetsa

Analyses There have been 140 cash-in-transit robberies across South Africa since January this year. This translates into at least one cash heist every day which could see the country recede to the 467 vehicle-on-road attacks reported in 2006 when this crime(demic) reached its peak. Last year during the same period, South Africa experienced 129 of these attacks and a total of 370 for the year. These 2017 numbers are frightening not because it showed a 105% increase in just three years from the 180 cases in 2014, but because nothing seems to be done to prevent them. The situation has spiralled out of control as the cash vans have become easy pickings for the greedy (and now more confident) gangs of robbers who have taken to heists in broad daylight and often during peak traffic hours. The attacks are as brazen as they are brutally violent and the gangs have become smarter. Gone are the days of ramming cash vans with luxury German vehicles in dramatic head-on collisions and then grinding open the backend to gain access to the safe. The use of explosives has now become the norm. Many a security officer has said in his recounting of a heist, that the criminals would drive up next to the cash truck and force it off the road by shooting at the vehicle’s tyres. Once the truck has come to a standstill, the robbers would force the security staff out of the back of the truck by showing them the explosives they are going to use to blow up the vehicle. Rather than risk death in the explosion, the guards surrender and exit the truck, where they are then disarmed. The van is blown up and the robbers are on their

The heart of the heist way before any private security responders or the police can arrive on the scene. The explosives? The suspects source these from mines in the area. This is also why most of these heists take place in Limpopo, the North West, Mpumalanga and Gauteng – these are mining areas. This is always the case and the suspects are hardly ever apprehended. Except in the most recent incident where seven suspects were arrested and one killed after a cash heist on the R71 between Tarentaalrand and Letsitele. Those suspects were apprehended in Hoedspruit and near the Strijdom tunnel, through good cooperation between private security companies, farm watch groups and the SAPS. Those suspects, identified as Shabangu Sizin (43), Veli Zwane (48), Prudence Ndala (34), Desmond Khulekani Siyoko (25), Albert Bosodi Matemane (35) and Mothibedi Africa Malatji (30), have appeared in the Letsitele Magistrate’s court and will remain in custody until their next appearance on the 2nd of July. But what of the rest? There have been five heists right on Tzaneen’s doorstep thus far. The result of which has seen one man hospitalized, a number of others wounded and police and security companies with hands in their hair. Parliament has finally decided to take a serious look into this seemingly unstoppable wave. On Wednesday (as I write this), Parliament’s portfolio committee for police held
a public hearing in which they discussed the intelligence and operational readiness of the SAPS, the cooperation between the banking sector and law enforcement, and possible technological innovations which could de-incentivise cash-in-transit heists. At the time of going to print the outcome of this hearing was not yet available. Any attempt to obtain accurate statistics on the number of heists or the amount of money stolen during the incident will inevitably run into an information cul-de-sac. The security
companies themselves are not willing to release their own statistics, banks are mum and the police crime stats are very often very inaccurate. Most of the heists are recorded by the police under other crimes such as armed robbery which make record keeping near impossible. Though the cost to the South African economy cannot be sufficiently quantified because of the inaccuracies in record keeping, it can safely be assumed that thus far, 2018 has cost South Africa in excess of R900 million. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Vir meer inligting, kontak vir Pieter Venter by 083 822 1560.

He runs to work as training
Bernard van den Dool
Bongmusa Mthembu won his second consecutive Comrades marathon when he crossed the finish line at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban in a time of 5:26:35. He became the second South African to win this race twice after Comrades King, Bruce Fordyce. But Tzaneen had its very own running contingent who travelled down to Pietermaritzburg to take on the 93rd instalment of the world’s most favourite race. Among them was one very determined young man by the name of Stephen Madiye (39). Being a father of three, a husband, and a full time employee working from 07:30 to 17:00 at KM Bolt in Tzaneen, Stephen has very little time to run. In fact he has nowhere to train really. “So I run from my home in Lenyenye to work here in Tzaneen every morning. I leave at around 05:30 so that I can complete the 28 kilomteres and still be on time.”
He doesn’t run back home at the end of the day, at least not right now because in his own words “it’s winter now and it gets dark too soon so it’s dangerous on the road.” But in summer he gladly skips his public transport ride and hits heel to tar. This year Stephen completed the Comrades in a remarkable time of 06:41:48 to land in 109th position out of the 23 000 runners who entered the race. The year before, he finished in 07:04:00 and claimed 192nd position overall. “I’m going for gold next year. I know I can do it, I am too determined not to, but I need some coaching because I cannot continue like this training on my own.” Currently he runs for the Foskor Running Club in Phalaborwa after having left Tzaneen Running Club. “I love Tzaneen club, it is my home town after all, but Foskor club pays for transport and accommodation where in Tzaneen there is no sponsor for any of that and the athletes have to fit the bill themselves.” But, despite Stephen’s remarkable achievement, there were other reasons for local running enthusi-
asts to get excited about. Whilst South Africa made a clean sweep of winning the coveted male and female first place medals in the Comrades 2018 – the quiet little Ofcolaco had something to celebrate too. The Ofcolaco Harriers is the smallest, most exclusive and bargain priced running club in the country boasting 11 members in total. But, not to be outdone, they had seven runners competing in this years’ daunting down run. Dog Noel completed his 25th
Comrades Marathon and he also holds a coveted Double Green Number. His time was 11:40:19. Bernard van den Dool completed his second run and knocked an incredible 1 hour and 10 minutes off his previous down run time to finish the race in 10:35:55. Arthur Davies finished in 10:26:01, Charles Boucher in 10:35:55, Michael Job in 10:26:01, Petlo Aurthur Matlou did it in 10:26:01 and Ross Elliott touched down in 11:20:52. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Granny’s Grumbles - Marriage
In 1968 the first Spar supermarket opened in our little dorpie. Many residents thought it might not do well considering there was a trading store and a Farmers Co-op but they were wrong. Since finding a secretarial job was out of the question I applied for a job as a stock controller which was basically a glorified name for somebody who checked the stock and dusted the shelves. The widow who owned the shop ran the bottle store section and old Mrs Grobler was the teller. Mrs Grobbie (as she was affectionately known) had a very strange
marriage. She and her husband had been married for a good 40 years but had stopped all form of communication some 20 years previously although they shared the same house. Evidently they each had their own bedroom and each of them had a set time for the bathroom and the kitchen as each of them cooked their own meals. Some years earlier electricity had arrived at the village – an argument ensued over the cost of installing electricity as he thought it unnecessary. Mrs Grobbie paid for electricity in the kitchen and her bedroom but was not prepared to pay for any other room in the house which might be used by him. Her husband would come to the shop to buy his own groceries as it was cheaper than the co-op and would do his best to irritate her by dumping the things on the counter and saying he could get them cheaper elsewhere. With pursed lips Mrs Grobbie would tot up his bill and give him the amount. This had been going on for months (much to the amusement of the staff) until one day it obviously got too much for her, and when he started up about the cost she stormed out from behind the counter, grabbed his trolley and called me. “Please put everything back on the shelves as this old goat thinks we are too expensive!” Of course old Grobbie just started up these remarks to annoy his wife since he had no intention of buying elsewhere and there then erupted an incredible row that our boss had to sort out.
Grobbie was a source a great amusement at the local – evidently he had been a hunter in his youth and used to relate hair-raising stories about his hunting exploits, especially if there were newcomers present. One night he was telling a story about how he had to fight off a wounded buffalo with the butt of his rifle. One of the locals said he doubted that Grobbie had ever seen a buffalo let alone fought one off whereupon Grobbie replied that he had been married to one for forty years so of course he knew how to handle them. He drove an old Jeep that was practically held together with wire and often went down to the Zambesi Valley where his claim was situated. Evidently he was picked up by the local game ranger of that area and charged for shooting a guinea-fowl out of season. Once a month a circuit judge arrived in the dorp to try the cases that had built up since his last visit. Grobbie had decided he was going to defend himself so a large contingent of the local males had decided to go just for a laugh – what on earth could a man say in his defence when he had been caught red-handed with the bird in his Jeep? At appointed time he arrived – completely decked out in his funeral clothes (and minus his teeth). He claimed self-defence – the guinea-fowl had attacked him whilst he was sitting in his Jeep and it was obviously rabid – had the game ranger checked it? The case was thrown out of court and earned him many free drinks in the pub later that day.

The coldest permanently inhabited places in the world are the towns of Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk in Siberia. During winter, temperatures there average below minus 45 degrees Celsius.
Mind-blowing Fact #79 The record for hottest workplace likely goes to Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. At two miles below the surface, rock temperatures can reach 65 degrees Celsius. Ice must be pumped into the mine—and the walls insulated with concrete—to allow people to work there without perishing.
Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit I greet you. Is it not amazing how often we fail to recognise the true potential in someone, especially the youth of today. We often judge them too harshly before gaining a true insight into where they come from, their hopes and dreams are often pushed aside. We use the phrases like “they are too young and they do not have the knowledge” My question is “Have they been given the chance?” In many of the main-line churches the pastors/priests fail to give the youth the opportunity to assist in planning and running the service, let alone the preaching. There are certain duties, however, that only an ordained priest can preform, but what about those duties that are done by the priest, that in fact can be done by a lay person and why does it always have to be an adult? I know for a fact that there is a church in Polokwane that is run solely by young people (the youth) even their council consists of a majority of youth. Our Rector has allowed our youth to run most of the communion service in our church and what success it has been. The youth have stepped forward and excelled. Even youth as young as 14/15 have been given the opportunity to preach, of course this is all done under guidance of the youth leader and we as priests. At first our youth were dropping out like flies and our service congregation were mainly senior members of the community. Suddenly, there seems to be an upswing in the youth attending the services and getting involved in all activities in the church’s life. I believe this is what Jesus was talking about when He talked about making disciples. Giving the youth the right to try and make mistakes, guiding and supporting them in their want to serve God. We know that there is a lack of trained priest/pastors in all churches, thus by encouraging full participation in the running of the church by the youth we will be encouraging new or future leaders. Once we have accepted Christ we all enter the priesthood, “The Priesthood of all Believers.” I therefore encourage all “senior” citizens to embrace the youth and support them. It is God who is calling them and we need to abide by His commands. Are you willing to accept a dying church or will you open your hearts and minds to new ideas?

One man’s historic contribution book is the history of the Biddulph family who came to South Africa as part of the 1820 Settlers. He traced their family name to a town by the same name in Yorkshire. Louis was born in Sea Point, Cape Town on the 1st of June 1940. His father owned a garage in Bellville. The family moved to Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, when Louis was 11 as his dad went into a garage partnership. Louis finished school there and then went on to complete his masters in History in at the University of Pretoria. He studied under the head of history at UNISA, Professor Muller for his doctorate. His doctorate on “the American involvement in the Anglo Boer War” led him to Washington DC in the USA for 10 months. He’d grown up with a father who

loved hiking and birding. At university he joined Exploratio, the university mountaineering club. He got to climb in the Magaliesberg and took on the Appalachian Trail in the USA. Louis admits he’s been a bibliophile since childhood. The first book his mother gave him, “Jock of the Bushveld” is still in his collection. There were two editions as there were factual errors in the first edition illustrations. The dung beetle is moving dung with its front paws but the beetle moves the dung with his back paws. Nipper Thompson from Wegraakbosch had a first edition. Louis joked, “If your book’s gone, you know who pinched it.” It subsequently disappeared. Louis and Nipper hunted for the book. Their trust and friendship has remained intact but the book is gone. As a child Louis’s highlight was Sundays the next episode of the comic strip “Prince Valiant”. The book “Commando” by Denys Reitz piqued his passion for the Anglo Boer War. He now has some 500 Anglo Boer War books in his collection. “HG Wells wrote about the Anglo Boer War. Rudyard Kipling came to South Africa as a war correspondent who hated the Boers. By the time he left he loved them.” Louis has Afrikaans, French and English blood coursing through his veins. His love for English literature is obvious with an entire room filled with English books. Besides collecting books Louis collects maps and recently found a new map of the Haenertsburg area at Map Studios. He lectured at Pretoria University and then moved

to the Cultural History Museum in Pretoria. He visited the University of the North (now Limpopo), was offered a job and moved to the University and settled with his family in the village in 1972. Louis was friends with the Welsh actor and documentary filmmaker Kenneth Griffith. Through him he met actors Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton. Richard asked him for his favourite movie and he said “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?” Richard retorted, “Why on earth did you like that movie. It was my worst as it was a mirror of my tempestuous relationship and marriage with Elizabeth Taylor.” Once in Haenertsburg Louis was introduced to the late Gugu Thompson of Cheerio Gardens. She said, “The Boers stayed in the village during the Anglo Boer War and blew up the last of four Long Tom guns at Rondebult behind my house.” Louis was skeptical as he’d followed many cold trails. He and countless others had thought the last Long Tom was destroyed between Lydenburg and Sabie, hence the Long Tom pass. Louis bought a metal detector and went up to the hole beyond Cheerio Gardens. What excitement when he unearthed, just below the surface, a 30 kg piece of Long Tom. It was so big that Louis was able to determine the calibre 6 inches (155mm) of the gun. Louis flew to the UK in search of missing Long Tom pieces. In an inventory he’d found the following inscription, “Muzzle of 155mm Crueset gun.” On a dusty bottom shelf in a storeroom of the Woolwich Artillery Museum he found the piece. As it was now in British hands, Louis needed the Queen’s permission to ship the 45 kg piece to South Africa. He appealed to the SA Embassy in London where Nelson Mandela was visiting. Formalities had to be completed before the piece could be taken out of the UK and Mandela promised to bring it back to South Africa. Brigadier Timbers from Woolwich presented the piece in time for the village centenary on 31 April 2001. Louis, Stella, his first wife, and daughters completed the Long Tom memorial in the village arboretum in 1996. Stella created the tiles, Estelle the drawings, Wilhelmin and Marie-Louise created the lettering. Louis’s bestselling book is the history of the Long Toms titled “Silence of the Guns.” He was instrumental in the village museum in Rissik Street and The Louis Changuion Hiking Trail has been named in his honour. Louis’s contribution to the historic value of Haenertsburg has been singularly enormous.

New school goes up outside Phalaborwa The need for an air conditioner in 2015 set off a chain of events that materialised in foundations being thrown for a school in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality three weeks ago. The fast growing new Boelang Community consists of some 4, 000 people under Kgoshi (local king) Andries Malatji. Some 250 children walk 17km to school and this includes crossing a river. The bush, surrounding the footpaths, makes the children easy targets for criminals and there
have been several rape cases. Architect Charles Hartman became involved through his air conditioning business in Phalaborwa. He brought the Induna, DemetrIus Malatji, an air conditioner and from there met and presented the Kgoshi with an air conditioner. The Kgoshi wanted a safe school in the Boelang Community for the children. Meetings to discuss the school took place in the Induna’s back garden under the maroela tree. A community committee was established to conduct surveys of the numbers of residents,

The school hall doubles up as a village hall and there are playing fields. There will be 16 classrooms, including an Early Learning Centre, from Grades R to Grade 7. The building has been designed in such a way that the roof can be lifted and another storey added as grades are added. There’s also provision for JoJo tanks and solar panels. The layout of the school is in the shape of an “A” for the Kgoshi Andries Malatji and the school is called Makatikele School. This is Andries’s name in his language. Kruger Park SPAR joins birthday celebrations SPAR South Africa celebrated their 55th Birthday this year, and they did it in the very best way possible – by giving back to their loyal shoppers who made the last five decades possi-
ble. Kruger Park SPAR in Phalaborwa was no exception to this birthday rule and during the entire month of May, the staff at this retailer brightened up the aisles with colourful garb and brighter smiles. Not only were shoppers treated to this extravagant extravaganza, but 200 locals were lucky enough to have had their groceries paid for by SPAR. SPAR South Africa gave away a total of 55 000 “Free Shopping Vouchers” of which two hundred were awarded in Phalaborwa. Going the extra mile, however, Kruger Park SPAR donated an electrical scooter to one of their longest standing residents and loyal shoppers. “Oom” Sampie Esterhuizen will now be able to enjoy a better quality of life while able to stroll through the store unabatedly.

Renzo du Plessis and Marvelous Mashzmbye
Ben Vorster sal nou hul sege moet voort sit in ‘n wegwedstryd teen Middelburg.
