— Joe Dreyer

Macadamia village in Tzaneen has a group of unsung heroes among them. They are collectively known as the “Macadamia Knitters” and are comprised of a group of between 25 and 30 ladies residing in this retirement village. Each year the Knitters take on a charity knit to help those less fortunate stay warm throughout the colder winter months. This year the children of Loretto school in Agatha received 23 hand-knitted jerseys from this group. Seen here are Liz Devenish (Macadamia Knitters), Brenda Mudumela (Loretto school management team), Anastasia Mashao (Loretto School Principal) and Pam Bender (Macadamia Knitters).

14 Arrested The weekend did not end well for fourteen people who were arrested by Tzaneen SAPS for various criminal transgressions. According to the Tzaneen SAPS four people were arrested for shoplifting, one person was arrested for theft out of a motor vehicle and arrested for

common assault. Shockingly one person was arrested for rape while another was arrested for the far less serious act of possession of dagga. Conversely two people were arrested for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and one person for malicious damage

to property. Two others were taken into custody for similar crimes including common robbery and one for fraud. Bravo to the local police for stepping up their game and working in unison with local security companies to help make Tzaneen a safer place for all.

were served with expensive bottles of their choice. The guests are served by his butler who is also his driver. He allegedly received R500 000 from the defunct bank. The former chairperson of the bank, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, and the founder of Vhele Investments also allegedly dipped into millions belonging to the investors to finance his lifestyle, through vehicle finance deals, mortgage bonds and complex inter-company loans between Vhele Investments and the VBS. Vhele investments’ companies are the majority shareholder of the VBS with 53 percent shareholding. The newly re-elected Treasurer of the Limpopo ANC Danny Msiza, is reported to have received a loan of R10 million from VBS. SALGA head, Thembi Nkadimeng, who defended the councils for investing with the bank, has recently been elected as the deputy president of SALGA which is led by Parks Tau, who allegedly nearly collapsed the city of Johannesburg by allegedly lending R300 million of the city’s money to the Gupta family. - Jan Mafetsa

Shake, rattle and roll A magnitude 3.0 earthquake hit the area of Mankoeng over the weekend. The tremors caused by this quake were felt as far as Tzaneen and even Letsitele and Gravelotte. Many of our readers shared their stories of rattling roofing sheets and loud booms which acted as wake up calls at 06:45 on Saturday morning. “It sounded like the monkeys were playing on the roof again,” said Yvonne Du Toit Roux and a very frightened Becca Ledwaba said that she heard it and was scarered stiff because her whole house started vibrating. “Our windows vibrated so vigorously that my husband thought it was a taxi with loud bass music driving past our house,” exclaimed Kerusha Bothma and according to Adelle Lappat Dey, “ours wasn’t a tremor… it was magic.” Some, like the writer of this piece, slept right through the event. It may come as a surprise however, that the Mopani District experiences regular earth quakes usu-

ally around the 3.0 mark on the Richter Scale. So far this year, Limpopo has experienced three quakes. Though these quakes are very rarely responsible for any structural damage or loss of life, the biggest quake recorded in the Limpopo province measured 4.8 and occurred five years ago in Modimolle. It is not certain what caused the quake as Southern Africa is not particularly prone to earth quakes, but many believe it could be as a result of the mining activities in the province. It is possible that, in the event of bigger quakes, Limpopo residents will feel tremors depending on the epicentre of the quake’s location. Two months ago Fochville was shaken up by a magnitude 4.5 quake just a month after a quake measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale sent its resident into a spin. Botswana was hardest hit thus far in the last year with a massive 6.5 Quaker hit the central Moijabana district. The effects of that quake was felt all the way up to Phalaborwa.

from an average of between three and five business robberies every month. In the recent months there was a syndicate which operated in that town and focussed on the residential areas specifically targeting gate motors. According to our source there were at least 50 gate motors stolen by the suspected syndicate in the space of just one month. The robbery at Riaan’s Outfitters seems to have been the first one following a three week break from business robberies. Nobody was injured in the incident and at the time of going to print we had received no further information. A CCTV video of the robbery can be viewed on Bulletin’s Facebook page. — Joe Dreyer

Five men robbed an upper-market clothing store in Phalaborwa during the early hours of Tuesday morning and made off with thousands of Rands worth of merchandise. According to reports a group of around five armed men drove up to the front of Riaan’s Outfitters at approximately 06:15 that morning, broke through the front door and looted the shop of valuable designer label clothing. They were gone within less than two minutes. At the time of going to print there had been no further information and police investigations continue. Bulletin attempted to contact the store for information on the robbery but was refused comment. We spoke to security officials who told us that currently Phalaborwa suffers

As most Limpopo municipalities are melting financially after investing over R15 billion in the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS Mutual Bank), the ruling ANC executives are reportedly living the high life. This comes while most investors are finding it hard to recover the monies which they had invested with the bank. It is alleged that the head of the bank, and paramount chief of the Vavhenda tribe, King Tony Ramabulana, the former chairperson of the bank Tshifhiwa Matodzi, and some officials of the ANC in the PEC reportedly benefitted from the deal VBS had with municipalities. Daily, thousands of investors are queuing at the bank wanting to collect their money. These investors allegedly receive only a portion of their investment amount and are told to return the following day. The representatives of the bank reportedly stated that they will not be able to pay investors who invested more than R50 000. Reports doing the rounds during the weekend were that Ramabulana is allegedly flying in a private helicop-

Nkakareng safe as EXCO change face The Executive Mayor of the struggling Mopani District Municipality (MDM), Nkankareng Rakgoale, is out of the cold - at least for now. This after she was elected as the additional member to the Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ANC over the weekend at the Ranch Hotel in Polokwane. She followed Bioskop Makumu who is expecting exaltation after being elected the Deputy Secretary. Just 24 hours after the election of its new PEC comprising mostly of supporters of the former Premier and now Small Business Minister Cassel Mathale, newly elected secretary Soviet Lekganyane said that they are going to sack those who did not support them in the run up to the conference. The move is in order to bolster the chances of the ruling party to win the upcoming election.

The conference which started late after it was court interdicted on claims that the NEC did not grant the former PEC the right to organise the conference. After the confusion which lasted for most of Saturday, the North Gauteng High Court dismissed the gag with costs and the conference continued. It was attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and General Secretary, Ace Magashule. At the conference which was attended by more than 1 500 delegates, the following names managed to make it in the top five, Stanley Mathabatha (Chairperson), Florence Radzilana, Soviet Lekganyane (Secretary), Bioskop Makamu (deputy Secretary), and Danny Msiza (Treasurer). Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Seaparo Sekoati, Jeremia Ndou, Polly Boshielo, Nkakareng Rakgoale were some of those elected by their regions to be additional members.

In his address during the conference, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is known to be an ally of Chairperson Stan Mathabatha, urged members of the organisation to unite so they could face the upcoming elections as a unit. He called upon those who resort to the courts to settle organisational matters to instead follow internal processes before they head to the courts. Ramaphosa futher said the ANC would soon launch its election manifesto which will be better than the other manifestos that people have seen. The conference was attended by the general secretary Ace Magashule and it was seen as the battle ground between the supporters of Ramaphosa and Magashule who is regarded as the Trojan horse for former president Jacob Zuma. Two days later the newly elected secretary

Soviet Lekganyane, said they will be many changes of faces in the Executive committee of the province. “Though it might be seen by others as the purge of those who did support us at the conference, we are going to tell Mathabatha to make changes in the provincial executive committee of the province. We are going to the elections and we cannot afford to have people who will block money for service delivery.” Mathabatha, from Waterberg was the former ambassador to Ukraine before he replaced Mathale as Premier. Subsequently the Chairperson, Florence Radzilana, is Mayor of the VBS plagued Vhembe District Municipality and served under Mathale as deputy secretary. Soviet served under Mathale as the secretary until Zuma disbanded them. — Jan Mafetsa

Chiefs to score nothing in land redistribution A call by the traditional leaders that land which the government aims to expropriate without compensation through the amendment of section 25 of the constitution, has fallen on deaf ears. This after the government made it clear that all land to be expropriated without compensation will be the land currently in the hands of the kings and chiefs, and not economically active land. This emerged last week during the Question and Answer session by Deputy President David Mabuza. He said that no economically active land would be expropriated and handed to the traditional leaders but will instead be handed to the community themselves. He added that the government will in future change the ownership of stands in communal land into title deeds. Mabuza said this is in line with the Communal Land Tenure Act which has been tabled in parliament, also adding that the new act will help speed up the transfer of land from the tradition-

al leaders to the community themselves. “We have notified all the Magosi through the meetings held between them and the government and other stakeholders, and it was made clear that the return of the land will not leave the residents alienated,” said Mabuza. “According to the act which will be passed into law soon, when the developer wants to develop the land into a mall, we call the community and inform them first, and thereafter a title deed will be issued taking into consideration that the community will benefit from the process. We need to note that land itself is not an asset until it has been developed. Therefore communal land needs to be developed before it is an asset.” Mabuza added that when the government said they want to take the land without compensation they did not mean the invasion of land whether it was in the hands of the chiefs or private land. He said when there is land identified to be expropriated it will not be given to

the chiefs. Even the land belonging to the chiefs will not be left out since it is the property of the communities these traditional leaders claim to be representing. “It is not comprehensible that traditional leaders are fighting for land while there is too much land in the areas which is lying barren and unproductive. We will have to select from some of that land and do something for the development of those communities. When I ask chiefs why they sell land for stands they say it is not them but the council members. We cannot give them land while their situation is chaotic,” said Mabuza. He reiterated that the chiefs do not give their subjects land, instead they only give them Permission To Occupy (PTO) letters which means all land still belongs to these chiefs. According to the law, the owners of the land is the community and not the traditional leaders. He further emphasised the fact that all land belongs to the

state and the chiefs are just the custodians on behalf of their subjects. This comes during the week the country is celebrating the 72 year anniversary of the Freedom Charter. Also at the time government had completed the submission process on the amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to push forward with the expropriation of land without compensation, and the public hearing process started this week. So far about 700 000 submissions have been made. The call that the land the government plans to expropriate without compensation be handed to traditional leaders, was made by the Paramount King of the Vavhenda tribe during the visit by President Ramaphosa at Bolobedu recently. The call was supported by the Balobedu Royal family who said that they want the whole of Tzaneen’s white owned farms to be expropriated and handed to them. Ramaphosa and Mabuza, however, differ with them on this view.

Granny’s Grumbles - Municipal mayhem payment. The door was wide open so my heart sank – it obviously meant the air-cons were not operational. My heart sank further when I saw two long lines – one at the enquiries and the other at the one and only teller. Nobody makes much conversation when standing in municipal queues – everybody’s glum. The security guard is snoozing quietly at the only escape point and the loudest sound is when a ratepayer has to give their particulars so that they can get a copy of their monthly statement. There is no quiet way of imparting your particulars to the enquiries lady – bullet-proof glass with no opening – almost as though they expect an attack of some kind. The quiet was broken by a resident querying why his statement indicated that he hadn’t paid his account for the past two months – this was now the third month – could the teller please check on the computer since he had definitely paid. The teller checked. No– no record of any payment. You could see everybody’s ears prick up – most people get disconnected after ten days How come this guy had managed to get away with non-payment for three months? Then the questioning started and this is when it got really interesting (and funny). Had the resident paid cash, by card or by cheque? It had been paid by cheque. Had it been crossed – had he checked his bank

statement? It transpired that there was no record of either of the cheques ever having been deposited. The teller looked puzzled – could the man remember to whom he had given the cheques. According to the ratepayer he had put the cheques in the cheque deposit box (which was attached to a pillar on the counter) as he had been doing for years. The teller turned round, grabbed a chair and positioned himself above the cheque deposit box and appeared to be trying to look through a slit in the box. ”Aha – now I see what has happened – this box is locked and your cheques are in here.” When questioned about when the box would be opened, he said the key had been lost for many weeks and nobody could find it. Since there was no indication of anybody doing anything about the locked box the resident asked if he should cancel the two missing cheques and make out a new one encompassing the three months. The teller thought about it for a while and then agreed that it might be a good idea. People were actually smiling – one of the few times I have seen loads of smiling people in a municipal queue and I really admired the non-paying resident – he looked totally straight-faced and acted as though this was a daily occurrence – didn’t raise his voice once and was totally calm. One wonders if they ever found the lost key – don’t think so since I see the cheque deposit box has since disappeared.

Poaching: How much do you know? What has every rhino poaching awareness campaign meant to the three dead rhino at SanWild Wildlife Reserve outside Gravelotte? Two of them, a mother and a young bull were brutally murdered by three savage poachers fuelled by the archaic belief systems of their Asian masters. The third one, a very young calf who had just been weaned, died from dehydration, stress and malnutrition after her mother’s murder. She was named Louise, after the custodian of the reserve, Louise Joubert, who died in a motor vehicle accident a little over a month ago. Both now gone. The suspects were not caught. They managed to evade the security companies, the anti-poaching teams, the police and the helicopter search teams. Though the hunt is still on, and though they will be caught and brought to justice, justice will not bring back the three victims. Last year 1 028 rhino were butchered for their horns which the minister of environmental affairs, Edna Molewa, rightfully said is no reason to celebrate because it is only a slight decline from the 1 054 animals slaughtered in 2016. In fact between 2007 and 2014 there was a 9 000% growth in rhino poaching. This despite the bumper stickers. In just a decade South Africa has lost more than 7 245 rhino to poaching alone. How many of the perpetrators were caught after the crime during the same period? A total of 2 381 poachers and syndicate members or traders have been neutralized in South Africa since 2010. The

highest number of these (1 148) were apprehended in the Kruger National Park. Awareness campaigns have come and gone and each year another half-dozen will appear out of the woodwork to coach the masses into purchasing bright red plastic horns for their expensive SUV’s or some other party trick. People support these awareness campaigns because of two major motivators. Firstly they actually truly believe that the money they spend will somehow assist in stopping the trade in rhino horn, and secondly they really don’t want to be the only one left out of the clique. Society has become desensitized. With rhino horn pricing in the region of US$60 000, it seems extremely unlikely that international traders care that the world is aware of the poaching problem. In fact they most likely care as much about your opinion and lobbying as they do about the animal the horns are butchered from. Action is what is needed. Support in the form of direct funding is needed, not awareness bicycle races and fun walks. We should be offering the rangers and anti-poaching units serious financial support through large corporates and government subsidies. How do we expect the counter-poaching teams to fight a war against a multi-million dollar funded enemy, through relying on chump change given to them in drips and drabs through small awareness campaigns and fun runs? “The most recent thorough and comprehensive studies and census estimates sug-

gest that there are estimated to be roughly 20,700 southern white rhino and 4,885 black rhino in Africa, including their subspecies, but as of 2018 the actual number is likely much fewer,” reported online rhino conservationist lobby group, PoachingFacts.com. According to their reports, the Kruger National Park is home to between 7 000 and 8 300 rhino as of 2016. The northern white rhino subspecies has been completely eradicated and the three species of rhino in Asia are also threatened by the demand for rhino horn as a symbol of wealth. As of the end of 2017 there are an estimated 3,333 greater one-horned rhino (Indian rhino), and at least 67 of the Javan species, and as few as 30 rhino of the Sumatran species left in the wild. We don’t need any more awareness campaigns, we are all too aware of the crisis, what we need are more prevention campaigns. These campaigns could include the deploying of military personnel to guard the borders of the Kruger National Park perhaps. More likely what will happen is you would have finished reading this piece, closed the paper and forgotten about all of this “poaching business.” Until the next news report flashing across your screen reads “last rhino dies in captivity.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

My love affair with an Asian elephant Linda Changuion (59), owner of the Pennefather complex in Haenertsburg, is preparing to fly her mother to Mauritius for her 90th birthday. She’s just returned from a trip to Thailand where she’s been going for the past four years. What started as a business trip to buy stock for her shops has turned into a flight every four months to see the love of her life, a three-year-old Asian male elephant called Poo Doi. She travelled north to Chiang Mai, four years ago, as she wanted to see Asian elephants in a sanctuary. Linda says, “I watched an elephant show and cried throughout as I realised these majestic pachyderms need to be treated fairly and not be on show doing tricks. This opened my eyes to the cruelty. I stood with a little elephant and wanted to puke when I saw tourists hanging onto his tusks. The little elephant was weaving, a sign of unhappiness, and my heart collapsed. I promised him that I would be back. “And so my love affair began with Poo Doi. I wanted to get him out of there and wanted him to lead a cruelty free life. I couldn’t see any scars on Poo Doi and I know that there is a loving bond between him and Wang (his mahout). I visited Lek

Chailert who runs the Elephant Nature Park. Lek introduced me to the Asian elephants in her care. Lek looks after more than two dozen Asian elephants, 600 dogs and a host of other animals. She’s rescued 200 elephants

in her life not just from Thailand but also Cambodia and Vietnam. I had to banish all thought of freeing Poo Doi as it costs in excess of US$500, 000 to provide for a male elephant. I forced myself to watch phajan (crushing) which is the abuse a young elephant goes through to satisfy tourist whims so that I understand the magnitude of the abuse. “Poo Doi means ‘From the Mountain’ and I thought it most appropri-

ate as I live on The Mountain. The branding on some of my shop products, designed by my son Brian, was inspired by Poo Doi. I’ve also met Poo Doi’s sister, Olga. “Every time I fly to Thailand my thought is only for the welfare of ‘my olifantjie, my Poo Doitjie.’ I don’t wear perfume when I visit my ‘olifantjie’. I get sniffed and snotted all over when Poo Doi greets me. He always remembers me but he’s totally attached to Wang. Thailand once had some 100,000 Asian elephants and there are now only 3,000 left. “I have a painting that Poo Doi did. I hide it because it’s cruel and I can’t endorse it. Every time I look at the painting I see Poo Doi’s little trunk and wonder what cruelty he went through to produce this.” Her favourite animals are pigs and baboons and she’s been involved with the SPCA for years. Now Poo Doi is also up there with the favourites. Linda has a spoilt pig called Mathilda and three dogs. Linda was the world’s biggest bacon eater but since taking on Mathilda six years ago, she can’t touch bacon or pork and is weaning herself off all meat to lead her chosen compassionate lifestyle. Her Pennefather cottages are pet friendly and she recently hosted the Husky Club with its canines.

Linda whispers sweet endearments to Poo Doi. INSERT: The branding, inspired by Poo Doi, on some of Linda’s products.

Jack's Paint and Hardware is celebrating Jack's Paint and Hardware will celebrate its 20th Birthday on 1 July 2018. Sophia and Athol Fernandez started this baby, originally named All Home Comforts, on 1 July 1998 as a small independent Paint Shop, diversifying with associated home services including Waterproofing, the supply and fitment of Window and Stoep Blinds, Security Gates and Window Tinting. Stained Glass was a specialised add-on which became more a hobby and has since graced many homes and businesses in Tzaneen and surrounding areas. “Jack's Paint and Hardware approached us 13 years ago to become a member of the group as they were increasing their footprint in the area and country. We saw this as an opportunity to grow with a very ambitious and exciting company which proved to be

the case. Our branch was awarded third highest sales of the brand countrywide this past year. We certainly have not looked back”. Jack's Paint and Hardware consists of 141 outlets in total of which 63 are Owner Managed Stores and 78 are Agricultural and Partner Stores. These are spread throughout the country and have the honour of being the soul suppliers of the quality Panache, Artisan and Covercote brands of paint. Although paint is the core of the business, Hardware Supplies are available for general maintenance by Contractor and the DIY man. There is a Painting Contracts Department which is hugely successful due to the quality of workmanship and materials used on the projects that have been completed. The department is managed by Mark Roux who is assisted by two very competent Supervisors and

all the services mentioned are still available. Recently Jack's started Tzaneen Safety Wear in a new venture to fill a void in the Safety Market to assist home owners, builders, farmers, municipalities and the like with their needs. “We are proud to announce that our staff turnover is very low as we encourage participation in training programs and job creation which is of high importance to the Jacks Group. This is one of our great successes over the years, and allows for a high level of skilled and professional advice to our customers. In fact Our Floor Manager, Joseph Mangena, has been with us from day one and even assisted without our move from Gauteng”. Do visit Jack's Paint and Hardware at 17 Skirving Street in Tzaneen to experience this high level of quality and service first hand.

Passion Power Motorcycle Club did it again It was on the 30th of April 2016 when Passion Power Motorcycle Club (MCC) visited Holy Family Care Centre for the first time in Ofcolaco. Having being touched by the warmth, love and kindness of the children, Passion Power felt the urge to return. They since undertook another visit on the 26th of May 2018. The club is comprised of a family of motorcycle enthusiasts namely Ndhambi Machimana (Switch), Tiyani Rikhotso (Air), Dulci Machimana (Swagg), Nyiko Vukea (NAV), Eddy Maphophe (King Edward) and Prudence Ramoshaba (Panther). Holy Family Care Centre is situated at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains

in Ofcolaco, Limpopo Province. It is a home responding to the needs of the sick and vulnerable, especially orphaned children. Currently, 70 children (34 boys and 33 girls) are registered at this home with age ranging from 0 – 20 years. Over three months (February – April 2018), Passion Power MCC raised donations in the form of funds, clothing, toys and food; all in the love and care for the little ones. It wouldn’t have been successful if it wasn’t for the generosity for all who opened up their hearts and contributed to the course. It’s worth mentioning that the partnership with Capricorn FM went a long way in the radio

blanket run before the event. The club is forever grateful for the time and contributions from all who were involved with special mention of ZZ2, Shoprite, Romans Pizza, Limpopo Church Network, Scooby Brothers, Cool Responsible Riders, Mobsie Kids, McDonalds, Capricorn FM, Tzaneen Park Butchery for food, clothing and toy parcels. Through the financial contributions from friends and family, Passion Power MCC managed to raise a cash donation of R15 000 towards Holy Family Centre. Our day at Holy Family Centre was jam packed with entertainment. The kids were well prepared and soothed us with dance and music; the jumping castle was magical in entertaining the young ones and ofcourse as per our tradition, we had a braai with the children. Passion Power MCC believes that by taking some time and dispensing it to the needy is the ultimate humanitarian sacrifice you can ever make. If you would like to donate to Holy Family Care Centre or do find yourself in the area and would like to visit, contact Sr Sally Duigan – 071 288 2536 / Theo Maleto at 083 377 9238.

Serves 4 to 6

For the tart shell: 225g plain flour 1 tsp cinnamon 100g butter, diced 2-3 tsp ice water Cinnamon Cream: 250 ml whipping cream ½ tsp cinnamon 1 tsp sugar

For the filling: 200 g pecan halves 1 cup whole pitted ZZ2 Karas Medjool dates 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3/4 cup molasses 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 large eggs

Start by preparing the shortcrust pastry. Sift the flour and cinnamon into a large bowl, add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the salt, then add 2-3 tbsp. water and mix to a firm dough. Knead the dough briefly and gently on a floured surface. Wrap in cling film and chill for 1 hour. Pre-heat oven to 180˚C. Roll the dough out into the shape of your tart tin with extra cm’s at the edges to overflow over the tin edges. Gently place the rolled dough into the tart tin and press into the corners of the tin.

Using a butter knife cut the excess dough off the edge of the tin. Place in the fridge to cool for 20 minutes. Blind bake the tart shell for 15 minutes. Remove the blind baking beans and baking paper and bake for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and keep aside until filling is done. Preheat oven to 180°C. Prepare the filling: Spread pecans on a baking sheet; roast at 180°C for 8 minutes, checking often to make sure they don’t burn. Pulse dates in a food processor until finely chopped. Set aside.

Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat; cook 1 minute or until browned, swirling pan frequently. Combine molasses, vanilla, and salt in a bowl. Whisk in eggs, and gradually whisk in browned butter until smooth. Spread dates in pre baked crust and sprinkle pecans evenly over top. Pour in egg mixture. Bake at 180°C for 40 minutes or until filling is set around the edges. Loosely cover with foil and bake for another 10 minutes. Cool completely before serving. Serve with cinnamon cream. (Whip the cream, cinnamon and sugar till stiff peaks form).

Karas Medjool Dates are in season and available from National fresh produce markets. info@zz2.co.za | www.zz2.co.za | 015 395 2040 |

Crème de la Chawane Khanyisa Chawane (22) was this week named the best player in the national netball premier league. During this same ceremony she was also named the best Centre player in the league. Chawane received her accolades via live television feed as she was not able to be at the awards in person because of a mandatory performance enhancer drug test. Though this star of the South African netball courts has made her home at the clubhouse of the Free State Crinums, she has her roots firmly planted in Tzaneen where she attended, and

played for, Ben Vorster High school. Between 2008 and 2014 she represented Limpopo in the position of Centre forward and played her way into the South African u/17 and U/18 teams during this period. “I will never forget Khanyisa,” said Charmain Beetge, Netball Coach at Ben Vorster. “From the moment that girl stepped onto the court I said to everyone in the local netball circles, watch that girl. She used to play Goal Defence during her time under my wing and she is only one of two girls in the history of Ben Vorster to have played for the First Netball Team since the age of 15. I am super proud of her and wish her only the best for the future.” After completing school she played for the Free State U/21 team and soon made a name for herself on the courts during the Varsity Cup. Her current aspirations are to play for South Africa and face off against the mighty Australians. Chawane is currently completing her BSc in Geography and Climatology at the University of the Free State. We spoke to her on Wednesday. “Firstly I was bowled over because I didn’t really expect to win anything, I was just playing for the team. I couldn’t be there because of the drug test and the procedures that go with it, but I feel blessed and honoured. There were so many really great players there which is why I am probably still in shock!” Currently recovering from a grade 1 ligament tear and an over-stretched tendon in her right ankle, Chawane said that she is enjoying a bit of a rest and learning to take things easy. She sustained the injury during a match on the 9th of June

which saw her team make it to the quarter finals. Despite the injury she still stepped up to the plate and gave it her all for the Free State Crinums against the Jaguars in the semi-final. “Playing Centre feels natural to me. It took some time to adapt to the change in play between Goal Defence and Centre, but once I got it, I cannot see myself anywhere else. In future, I would love to remain in the Center position, but I am able to play all positions rather well and there is none that I don’t particularly like.” Chawane said that when the time comes to hang up her netball shoes, she would like to continue pursuing her climatological path and perhaps play an important part in the fight against the effects of global warming. Particularly in the agricultural sector she concluded. For now, however, it is all about studying and netball – and no boys, there is no space for love at this stage. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
