The opening of the Hlayisani Drop-in Centre was cause for celebration during the annual Mandela Day festivities on Wednesday. The new building was sponsored by ANB Investments and supported by Indigo and the Du Roi group. The centre will serve as a form of daycare for the school-going pupils from empoverished families in the area. At the centre the children will receive a meal and assistance with their homework. The Cheiftainess Mrs N’Wamitwa II addressed the crowds and thanked their benefactors for their generosity. The day was framed by entertainment in the form of traditional dances performed by the local school children who will benefit from the centre.

Sparks of divisions in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo will fly high when the faces of leaders in various municipalities in the province change places soon. This is amid the massive reshuffle underway, and to be announced soon. This comes in the wake of reports that the provincial conference left vacant positions in regional and provincial executive committees of government. A source within the ANC in Mopani who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media, told Bulletin that a massive reshuffle that would affect municipalities, and the province is underway. He said the inevitable reshuffle is precipitated by the recent election of various mayors and the filling of the vacant position of secretary in Mopani and Vhembe after the election of Bioskop Makamu, and Florence Radzilana respectively. After the controversial conference called the “Ranch 2018”, Mopani ANC secretary was elected the deputy secretary, the mayor of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) and Vhembe regional chairperson, Florence Radzilana was elected the deputy chairperson. Nkarereng Rakgoale, the current mayor of the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) and the Mayor of Greater Giyani municipality Gloria
Baloyi were elected additional members. According to the source, the policy of the ANC dictates that a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) cannot serve at the lower level of the organisation while being elected to the top structure. He said there is a lobby on the ground that GTM Mayor, Maripe Mangena is being promoted to contest the position of the secretary of the region, which will be left vacant when Bioskop Makamu vacates the Norman Mashaba house. “When the reshuffling takes place some positions of Mayors will be vacant as the incumbents would have been deployed to the provincial legislature. As per the constitution of the organisation, special Regional General Councils (RGC`s) which are attended by secretaries and chairpersons of branches, will be convened to elect the new secretary and chairperson.” Though it could not be established who could be the Mayor of Giyani, members of the ANC in Tzaneen who were interviewed by Bulletin said that if Mangena - who will be contesting the former secretary Bricks Manzini - has his way, the current speaker Sipho Nhemo will be offered the mayoral chain, while the current speaker of the Mopani and chairperson of the ANCWL, Dikel-
edi Mmetle may lead Mopani. The current Mopani secretary Bioskop Makamu is earmarked for the position of the MEC for Agriculture which was left vacant by the recent death of Joyce Mashamba who died two weeks ago. Just a week after the conference, MEC for Sport Arts and Culture, Annah Moloi, resigned on Facebook saying that she is ready to hand over the blue lights for she did not join the ANC for blue lights. She was forced to resign by Premier Mathabatha. Florence Radzilana, who is the chairperson of the Vhembe region, is the current Mayor of the VBM which is reported to be struggling financially after it invested too much money in VBS bank. She will be exalted to province as the MEC and the municipality will be left without a Mayor. Also in Venda the RGC will be convened to elect the new chairperson after her departure to the PEC. Party secretary, Soviet Lekganyane said the PEC will change faces. Shortly after the Nasrec conference several municipalities moved swiftly to fill the vacant positions of directors in order to strengthen the Zuma base in Mopani by appointing people linked to the cause of saving the former president. Most of the senior directors appointed were linked to the Zuma cause.
No compensation for your contaminated borehole “Morning. Read the Bulletin headlines last night. My team will attend to the problem today.” This was a message received from the new Municipal Manager of the GTM, Thapelo Matlala, on Saturday morning. This followed the article on the contamination of Tzaneen’s water system at the river near the Rietbok Street sewerage pump station in the Tzaneen industrial area which we published that Thursday. At the time of going print last week, we had not received any feedback from the municipality on an enquiry we sent regarding the state of the town’s drinking water and how it would affect the Blue Drop status. We did however receive a response yesterday afternoon. According to the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, the municipality was not aware of the situation at the two sites mentioned in our article, but the moment that they became aware of the situation, a team was activated and the problem rectified. “Immediately we were made aware of the problem, we took action and now the
of the Great Letaba River which the stream in question opens into. The test results, which showed a sulphur content of 100ppm (acceptable levels for consumption being 10.5ppm) were criticized by social media commentators because they were conducted by AfriForum which the majority of the local community believed to be a publicity stunt. One commentator even remarked that black people are not worried about the contaminated water as they are used to it and raise their children on it so it doesn’t bother them. We find this remark to be absurd and it is the hope of this author that the remark was made in jest. Nevertheless, the GTM has said that they will now conduct their own tests and have said that their drinking water is indeed safe for human consumption. As for whether the borehole owners will be compensated for their losses because of their water now possibly being contaminated, the GTM responded by stating; “we are not in a position to respond to such question, we don’t have facts to support such stance and therefore the question cannot be responded factually.”
problem is resolved, it is possible that some members of staff might have been aware but when it was brought to our attention, we took steps immediately,” he said. “Yes there is a possibility of contamination but the extent to which it affects underground water is a scientific process, and tests have to be conducted to establish such effect.” He was responding to our question regarding the contamination of the surrounding areas and the underground water tables which read, “As custodians for water in the municipality, does the GTM accept that because of the pollution from the sewerage spill directly into the river, some residents in these areas, will not be able to drink the water from their boreholes?” The answer seems rather vague and open-ended which leads one to believe that perhaps water from boreholes need to be tested individually to determine the extent of the contamination. Because contaminated it surely is. This was proven by tests we requested to be conducted by the team from AfriForum who tested the water at three different parts of the river including the mouth

Six die in Palabora Copper inferno
Conveyor 5 On Sunday morning at approximately 01:25 the call came through. A fire had started at Conveyor 5 at the Palabora Copper underground operations in Phalaborwa. There were 227 workers in the shaft at the time of the fire. Six men died that day. According to reports we received, some of which can only be confirmed pending the outcome of the investigations currently underway by officials from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) in conjunction with the mine management and the South African Police Services, the fire started when a section of the conveyor belt at Conveyor 5 caught alight. Palabora Copper confirmed this through a media release. Commentators have questioned this, sighting the fact that according to DMR specifications only fire retardant conveyor belting was to be used and that if this was the case, the fire would not have had enough fuel to reach the
intensity it did. It would also not have been able to burn for as long as it did (according to other statements, the fire was still burning by 15:00 that afternoon which severely hampered rescue efforts by the Proto Teams). This claim has not been confirmed and is currently under scrutiny by those conducting the investigations. In a press statement by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the organization claims that the workers underground were only instructed to evacuate the area after smoke from the fire was noticed by a Logistic Belt Operator in that section. We asked Palabora Copper’s media liaison officer, Lydia Radebe, whether the smoke detectors had been operational at the time, given the fact that the workers were alarmed by the sight of the smoke and not the sound of the alarm. “We have not heard of this. However, there are investigation teams that are investigating the incident and once
As it happened According to a source on the mine, when the workers arrived on shift Sunday morning at 06:00, they were told not to go underground but report to their manager’s office. There they were informed that four of their colleagues were trapped by dense smoke underground and a rescue team had gone into the shaft to extract them. “Two of the guys were at North Outer Refuge Bay, one was at Crosscut 20 and the fourth one was at an electrical workshop in sector 4,” our source revealed. Conveyor 5 runs approximately three kilometres from CV26 to the surface. There are two shafts namely Mary Anne (the smaller of the two) and Main Cage. At that stage, the latest update received was that the conditions were too hot, there was too much smoke and the Rescue team could not access the refuge bay at sacrificial 3, therefore they were seeking alterna-
tive routes to reach the site of the fire. The first rescue team had exited the shaft by that time, and the second team went down to continue the rescue operation. At that stage there was only one fatality reported. A short while later the news reached the surface that there had been two confirmed fatalities and that four miners were still missing. The proto teams continued with their search and rescue mission. That evening at around 19:00, it was reported that a further three bodies had been discovered raising the count to five fatalities with one more miner still missing. At 20:00 the mine confirmed that a sixth body had been found. It was at midnight that evening that Lydia Radebe called to confirm that the bodies of the six victims had been extracted. The search continued though the rescue directive was now moot.
they have completed the investigation, then we will know the exact cause of the problem. Once the investigation report is out then we will share more details on the cause,” she said. The Minister of the DMR, Gwede Manthashe paid a visit to Phalaborwa on Tuesday afternoon where he briefly addressed the media before entering the mine along with representatives of PMC. He visited the site of the disaster and ensured their full cooperation in the investigations. The Minister also expressed his sadness at the loss of life and expressed his condolences to the families of the six men. It was the worst tragedy in the history of the mine’s existence and one that has caught the attention of national and international media. Condolences have streamed in from all across the region as friends, acquaintances and family members mourn their loss.
The Proto Teams
AMCU also made the bold claim that the mine’s own proto teams were not “ready to complete the rescue” which led to the mine requesting the help of other proto teams from mines in the Burgersfort area, which in turn led to the rescue operations only starting at around 11:00 that morning. This is not true. Bulletin spoke to a member of one of the proto teams at around 08:00 that morning. He was exhausted after having been busy with the rescue efforts since before sunrise. “Proto rescue missions are complicated missions and is not unusual for teams to call on other teams to assist during an emergen-
cy. Normally a proto team, when entering a smoke filled area, members use oxygen masks and ice jackets thus a member may be within an area for 15 minutes and get out to be able to breathe/ change oxygen and his ice jacket,” explained Radebe. “As a result, to have a frequent swap of proto members (like a relay team) entering the area and going out without having to wait, numbers play an advantage meaning the more people (proto members) you have, the better. Our proto team is called all the time to assist in emergencies on other mines because in the proto’s line of work, the more members the better.”

Eight year olds now declared men Scores of community leaders in the Thlabine and Bokgaga areas in Tzaneen have accused their government of negligence following the annual initiation season finale this past week. Their comments stem from the absence of any police officials, medical personnel, traditional leaders or municipal councillors at the welcoming ceremonies for hundreds of returning initiates at sports grounds in the area. The non-attendance of these leaders and government entities comes after the news that many of the initiation schools were in fact operating illegally and some were accused of breaking the rules by allowing under-aged boys to attend the annual tradition. Rosina Mangena, who’s son arrived at the Mokhapa high school sports grounds where thousands gathered to receive their children from the schools, said the community was worried when they did not see ambulances or fire brigades as is the case at government functions. She said if something terrible happens, people’s lives would be in danger. She said it was surprising that even traditional leaders in whose names the schools operated, were nowhere to be found. She expressed concern that the government continuously assured residents that these schools were inspected, but if they are not available when the children graduate from the mountains, how should they be trusted? Residents told Bulletin that though the return of the initiates warrants a massive celebration, what happens behind the scenes needs to be given attention, to ensure that some of the more unsavoury practices could be prevented. It is reported that despite the
boys being prohibited to drink water for weeks, they are exposed to cigarettes and drugs such as dagga at a very tender age.
Lisborn Ramoshaba, a resident of Khujwana village said he went to the mountain himself. He advised parents to take care of their children when they are on the mountain, because the fact that even toddlers are accepted at these schools means not everything is right. According to Ramoshaba, some of these young boys are introduced to alcohol and cigarettes at their welcoming ceremony when they have reached the mountain to begin their initiation. “Instead of spending thousands organising a party for an eight or ten year-old because he is called a man for spending a week in the bush, or giving a child R200 to buy sweets, people should instead urge children to study
harder to get their matric certification. Perhaps only then should there be a cause for such celebrations. The fact that eight yearolds are welcomed back to the community as men, shows that there is something seriously wrong with the whole institution.” On the same note, residents of Khujwana North were shocked on Saturday morning when a man was found wounded on the side of the road after he was attacked while returning from a party organised to welcome the initiates back from the mountain. During the welcoming celebrations cars were spinning around the sports fields and there was heavy drinking which raised fears for the safety of the congregants. - Jan Mafetsa

Granny’s Grumbles - The Dominie
Following on from the story of Mrs Grobbie who worked at the Spar… she informed me very solemnly one morning that the Dutch Reformed Church was eventually getting a dominie. The DRC was actually the only church in our little dorp. For some years there had been no leader and the odd dominie would visit. I gathered that the previous dominie had not lived up to Mrs Grobbie’s expectations as he was not firm enough with the men of the congregation, so she fervently hoped that the newcomer would assert himself with the male congregants, especially her errant husband. A couple of weeks later the newcomer (complete with his wife) arrived. He was a young man so Mrs Grobbie had her doubts. His first church service had a large gather-
ing – most, I suspect, wanted to check him out. After the service he questioned all the farmers about where they lived and said he would be visiting within the week. He did indeed and left each farm with half a sheep, a hindquarter of beef or a boot full of vegetables. These gifts were intended to convince him that they did not actually have to attend church to prove what good people they were – this had evidently worked very well with his predecessor so why change. They found out very soon that this young man was quite happy about accepting the gifts but he made it rather obvious that they were expected at church. Also there would be no smoking near his church and in fact he frowned upon smoking altogether. In the sixties smoking was a fact of life – everybody smoked! Mrs Grobbie was delighted with the new dominie and baked him cookies every week – possibly in the hope that he could make a change to her husband. The dominie wasted no time in telling the congregation that he expected them to arrange a bazaar within a couple of months. And indeed within a few months the posters were up and the party lines hummed with the news of the forthcoming bazaar. Every farmer was expected to donate at least one beast whether it be a cow, a sheep or a pig and the wives were expected to bake up a storm in the kitchen. Those of us who did not belong to the DRC were also excited about the prospect of something different. There were food stalls galore and loads of knitted toys and children’s clothes but nothing remotely resembling gambling and no music. During the afternoon I needed to go to the toilet but when I got to the door it ap-
peared stuck so I shoved hard and it gave way slightly and a face appeared and said “Oh – it’s you – I’ve just been keeping “cavey”. For those not familiar with this expression it means keeping a watch to avoid being caught out. There appeared to be nobody in the actual toilets – the ladies were all standing around the basins smoking – all worried about being caught smoking by the dominie’s wife. A little while later I nearly tripped over a trio of men crouched behind a car in the parking area – all listening to the rugby on a transistor radio and smoking away furiously. Evidently the dominie objected to sporting events taking precedence over a church function (which meant the bazaar). During the next year the young dominie managed to intimidate most of the locals into attending church regularly – he also had freezers full of beef, mutton and pork. His coup de gras was managing to buy a farm for virtually nothing from one of the wealthiest farmers in the area. Shortly after the farm sale the dorp was stunned to hear that the dominie had retired from the ministry very suddenly. It took some time for the general population to hear that some young farm assistant who had been in Salisbury during his monthly break and who had been staying at a rather dodgy hotel had bumped into the dominie in a rather embarrassing situation with a young blonde. He passed this on to his boss and the dominie decided it would be a good idea to resign. Mrs Grobbie was despondent – the farmers were delighted – and the dominie was over the moon – he had a young blonde and a farm. “I told you so” I said to a couple of my friends “whoever heard of a dominie who didn’t like rugby?”

The Message Adriaan van Tonder Wankelende geloof. Johannes 11:1-16. Vertroue is toegepaste kennis.

Pets come to Liz’s defence “He held my one arm behind my back and a knife poised at my throat. We were in my bedroom when Sir Pig, my six-year-old pig, came charging into the bedroom with raised hair and growling. My attacker started strangling me. He swung around, using me as a human shield, and lunged at Sir Pig. I screamed, ‘out Piggy,’ and my obedient pig obliged.” Saturday 16th June 2018 should have been a busy morning for Liz McGaffin (54) as she watered and sorted out plants at her off-the-grid peaceful home outside Haenertsburg. She was preparing plants to take to the Magoebaskloof Hotel for the following week’s Fair. She’d also placed a crate of paints in her car to touch up her nursery signs at the Hotel. She was outside with her dogs, Tau and Rio, when she saw a flash in her strategically placed mirror inside the home. She went inside, realised someone had ducked behind her table, and ran outside screaming for her dogs. He caught her from behind, grabbed her hair and arm, and held a knife to her throat. Rio went for him and he kicked the little dog. Then he lunged at Tau with the knife. Liz commanded Tau with the words, “Move. No Tau,” in order to save her dog. Her mind blanked. She didn’t want blood drawn as she sensed this would set this criminal into frenzy. The black balaclava-clad clean smelling, clean clothed attacker, with a Quicksilver t-shirt, was strong and built like a rugby player. He was about half a head taller than Liz and held her tightly throughout the hour long ordeal. In a rasping and agitated voice he constantly repeated, “I’m going to kill you.” In the bedroom he shouted, “The safe. Gun. Money.” When she said that she had nothing he threw her repeatedly against the wall. In the fracas he inflicted a minor injury and stabbed the palm of her hand. She recalled her R300 in her satchel. He pushed her towards the satchel and when the cash wasn’t there, he threw her against the wall yet again. She then remembered the money was in her desk. He wouldn’t touch the purse and made Liz take out the money and hand it to him. She went through absolute terror then moments of complete lucidity. She’d already been in an armed hijacking in Johannesburg
and fought those attackers. This time she went wimp. He wanted all her devices. She had to remove SIM cards, batteries and passwords. She also had to write down all her passwords. Her tablet screensaver was of her 20-year-old exuberant and laughing son, in the snow with arms outstretched. Two years after that photo was taken Graham was paralysed with transverse myelitis and is now in Sandton Clinic battling complications.
Liz with Sir Pig Acorns.
He asked, “Who is that?” “My son, Graham.” “Where’s he?” “A long way from here.” He then wanted bags for his stolen goods and Liz was shoved in the direction of the pantry. He kept on forcing her to return to the bedroom from where he could observe the road. Once everything was packed, he forced Liz onto her footstool and stood over her. This was the first time that she saw him from the front and all she saw beneath the balaclava was dark eyes and a little moustache. Then he rasped, “I want your sex.” She whispered, “I’m a sick woman. I’ve got a nerve disease.” Liz was too exhausted to explain fibromyalgia so she said, “I’ve got AIDS.”He got annoyed, slapped her backwards off the footstool and onto her bed. Immediately he ripped her back onto her feet. “Where are your car keys?” She handed
them to him. ‘You’re coming with me,” he commanded. He pushed her into the passenger seat and commanded her to unlock the gear lock. He held the knife at her head. He got agitated and she felt urgency in him that wasn’t there before. “Why won’t it go?” “Let your foot off the clutch,” she said. With that the uninsured car shot out like a bullet. At the corner of her property he slammed on brakes and screamed, “Tracker, tracker.” She was suddenly so weary. She looked at him and said, “I haven’t got a tracker.” He screamed, “Get in the back and sleep.” Within seconds he screamed, “Get out.” He told her to offload her crate of paints. She dropped the crate with the back door still open and ran into the house and locked the doors. She heard the car revving. She ran to get help at the neighbours 200 meters away. They weren’t there. She ran back to
the open house and locked herself and the animals inside. She found her two-way radio but it was flat. With trembling hands she found an adapter and began charging it. As soon as it kicked in, she frantically called, “Please! Somebody help me,” on every channel. A voice replied, “Liz, we’ve got you.” Five minutes later HNW (Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch) arrived. The SAPS arrived a few minutes later. Drones were used to trace the criminal and her car but to no avail. Her younger son, Christopher, dropped everything and drove from Johannesburg and was at her doorstep by 17:00. He stayed with her and then took her with him to Johannesburg to recover. Liz is back home but her livelihood is threatened as she’s still carless. She is frightened and fragile and this has taken its toll on her health and state of mind.

Meet the new Volkswagen Arteon Arteon is designed to take on the likes of the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 series grand coupe. On the outside the Arteon looks great with the big, bold VW styled grill and the streamline appearance caused by all the creases on the bodywork. The colour schemes are great too and the car as a whole screams elegance. But it still has that Jetta or Passat flavour to it, which is a little disappointing when you compare the two models. But despite the interior which closely resembles that of the Passat, the Arteon does compensate for its rather unimpressive interior
design, through its full house of luxurious features standardized across all models. These include the tri-zone climate control, leather seats, all round LED lights and a digital driver’s display with an 8 inch touchscreen which also comes with gesture control. This means that just by waving your hand, you can shuttle

Introducing a sexier new Micra The all New Nissan Micra is here to turn convention on its head. It’s been designed to challenge everyone’s expectations of what a small car is, and revolutionise your way of looking at premium vehicle design, comfort and performance. From its bold, sculpted sporty looks to its interior space, comfort and style, this is a hatchback that will give you countless reasons to love your car. The New Nissan Micra takes the best of what Nissan has to offer and blends it into a stylish vehicle that is intrinsically safe thanks to its intelligent safety features and agile driving characteristics. This is a car that will allow you to drive with greater exhilaration and perception thanks to Nissan’s Intelligent Driving Systems, and will make you feel more secure behind the wheel than ever before. Perfect for families, friends and singletons, this is a car that demands to be shared and wants to be noticed. It is everything you’d ever want in a car of this class, and comes standard with an exceptionally high level of features. In contrast with the previous generation budget-oriented Micra Active, which remains on sale, the newcomer will be positioned at the upper end of the compact hatchback segment. In a trend-bucking move away from mass-production of affordable “world” cars (a practice that may now be left to its Datsun sub-brand), Nissan primarily designed and developed its new Micra specifically for the EU, the world’s largest small hatchback market. This version is produced in France
as well as Thailand, the latter of which is the most likely source of the units that will be launched in the South African market. The new Micra is uninhibitedly styled to turn heads and targets an altogether younger demographic. It is lower, wider and longer than its predecessor and its chiselled exterior offers considerably more space inside. Now riding on an agile, re-engineered chassis, the newcomer can pack extensive safety kit and connective technology. Its design incorporates many of the current Nissan design cues including the distinctive V-grille, from where sharp crease lines run through to the rear ends boomerang-shaped lights. The floating roof effect of the C-pillar creates an airy feeling. The rear door handles are hidden in the trailing edge of the C-pillars and an extended roofline culminates in a spoiler. Inside, the new Micra is a huge step forward. The drab interior has been replaced by something more stylish and modern. But most crucial is the quality. This is a far better-finished car than before with more softtouch plastics and modern fittings. The driving position is lower and the extended width and wheelbase translate into more cabin space and the new “gliding wing” shaped dashboard imparts the feeling of greater cabin width. Room for those in the back is about standard for a hatchback in this class and the generous 300-litre luggage bay is deep, which does mean you have to lift heavy things out over a substantial lip. The Micra does, how-
ever, come with a proper spare wheel as standard. Oddly, the rear windows across the range only have manual winders (UK specification). In many “firsts” in its segment, the new Micra sees the trickling down of on-board technology from larger more luxurious cars in the upper echelons of Nissan’s current international line-up. In Europe, new tech includes lane departure warning, emergency city braking with pedestrian recognition as well as Nissan’s around-view monitor, traffic sign recognition, high beam assist and blind spot warning. There’s a seven-inch full-colour central display providing access to the audio system, navigation, mobile phone,

Lim wins national basketball tourney Merensky High School’s Enslin Sambo (grade 12) is an up and coming basketball star. He represented Limpopo as the shooting guard in the Limpopo Tigers team, who competed in the annual u/20 Interprovincial Basketball Tournament, held in Sasolburg from 22nd – 24th of June. Eight provinces participated in this upcoming sport. From the word go, the Limpopo Tigers were a force to be reckoned with. After winning all their games, they faced Star
College in the semi-finals. A fierce battle took place with a determined Limpopo squad eventually beating the Tshwane team by 47 goals to 44. In the finals against North West, the boys from Limpopo dominated centre court, boasting a walk-over victory of 44-26. All the Plasies commend Enslin on his work with teenage basketball players in our community and trust that he will put basketball on the Tzaneen map. Enslin Sambo

Vossie Gazelle gaan Rusland toe
— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Merensky-krieketweek bly gewild
Merenskyweek Senior Dream team
