The ANC in Lithuli House has admitted it has received money from the Venda Building Society (VBS) and though denying that it was R 2 million, said it would launch full investigations into the matter and if found true the party will pay the money. Meanwhile Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and the Democratic Alliance (DA) are the latest being implicated for receiving funds from the bank. The noticeable silence by almost all the opposition parties about Advocate Terry Motau’s report titled “The Great Bank Heist” raises some questions among the voting public regarding the allegations that some of the bastions against corruption could have somehow benefitted themselves. The latest names to be linked to the recipients of the VBS loot is the former ANC Treasurer and Minister of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGSTA) Zweli Mkhize,

The positions of mayors in seven municipalities in Limpopo will be left vacant after the top six and the National Working Committee (NWC) adopted the recommendations of the Integrity Committee this past week. The recommendations are that the deployees of the ruling party implicated in the infamous “Great Bank Heist” be released from the responsibilities both in government and in the party. The latest developments will see mayors, municipal managers, Chief Financial Officers(CFO), top leaders of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) members and business people linked to the ruling party face the consequences for their actions. This came in the wake of the resignation of former Finance Minister, Nhlahla Nene, after it emerged that he withheld information about some of the meetings he had with the Gupta family. Chairperson for the Integrity Committee, George Mashamba, said the developments at the now defunct Venda Building Society (VBS) has left the reputation and the integrity of the ANC severely damaged. He said though he do not want to talk about the proceedings within the committee, members expressed anger at the manner in which business was done at the defunct bank. “The committee has
recommended to the NEC that the deployees and office bearers of the party implicated in the VBS saga should step aside from the positions while internal processes will be taking place. We looked into the matter as referred to us by the party and we expected any cadre of the movement implicated, to approach the committee as communicated, but they did not come,” said Mashamba. “We do not say they are guilty. We are taking the allegations labelled against members of the party very seriously.” So far the individuals that are to be affected by the decision include the mayors of the seven municipalities who invested money with the VBS, leaders of the SALGA and executives who pushed their mayoral members to invest the money with the VBS against the advice of the Treasury. Among the most affected mayors are those of the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, whose mayor and SALGA Treasurer,

The Department of Basic Education has allayed fears that the Grade 12 Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy papers which were written on Monday, were leaked. The Department described the letter being circulated containing these claims, as having the potential to confuse and cause anxiety among matriculants. Parents and teachers were advised to ignore the fake letter and urged to demonstrate commitments and good conduct as the examinations continue. Hunadi Mateme defended the investments during her visit to Tzaneen last year and promised to rectify the situation. SALGA National Deputy President, Limpopo Chair and Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng, defended the investment as municipalities were made to sign for yearly terms, instead of six months. The other alleged offenders are reportedly the Treasurer of the ANC in Limpopo, Danny Msiza, alleged to have bribed municipal officials to invest with the bank, ANCYL secretary Che Selane, (already suspended) for defending Msiza and receiving some of the loot, and Deputy Chairperson and Mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Florence Radzilana. She is alleged to have received R300 000 for investing R300 million with the bank. The South African Municipal Workers (SAMWU) national office is alleged to have received funds from the bank through a loan which was allegedly used to build their head office in Johannesburg. These rumours were denied by the organisation which said that it had just received a loan from the bank to purchase computers and office furniture. Meanwhile SAMWU provincial chairperson, Sello Manyama reported that the VBS saga has left some of their members vulnerable. “On Monday morning we received a message from the Provincial Secretary, Patrick Aphane, in which he said that two gun shots were fired at his house on Sunday. The first shot hit the outside wall while the second one shattered through a window. Fortunately nobody was injured in the process.” Manyama said the attacks on their members can be attributed to the mass protests the organisation is holding in various municipalities demanding the resignation of mayors whose municipalities invested money with VBS. - Jan Mafetsa

Ironically Mkhize was later moved to government where he was given portfolio for municipalities. After the announcement of the report, Mkhize told parliament that he “strongly condemned the wanton fraud displayed in the VBS saga. We strongly believed that it should not have happened.” He said the municipalities which had invested with VBS will not receive the invested money back. The Democratic Alliance is reported to have received money from the VBS executives during the 2016 elections which resulted in some of the metros being under the control of the party. The DA denied receiving anything from the bank.

On Sunday the Integrity Committee of the ANC recommended to the National Executive Committee (NEC) that all members of the party implicated in the VBS scandal recused themselves from their responsibilities in government and also not take part in activities of the organisation. The Committee expressed dismay at the reputational damage the developments at VBS had on the organisation. Shortly before the results of the Integrity Committee, reports emerged that the ANC, through the then Treasurer lured municipalities to invest money with the bank after he secured a R2 million donation. GTM officials investigated for copper theft Five employees of the GTM are being investigated for alleged copper theft over the weekend. Bulletin received information that the five employees were all allegedly electricians from the municipality’s electrical engineering department and that one of the suspects was working in the GTM’s power station control room. Our source further alleged that one of these suspects was related to a senior manager at the GTM. This could not be confirmed at the time of going to print. We also learnt that despite the alleged theft of copper being a very serious criminal offence, the GTM has not opened a criminal case with the SAPS, but have stated that they wish to handle the matter internally. The DA’s Member of Parliament, Desiree van der Walt, caught wind of the situation and immediately wrote a letter to the Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala, demanding that a criminal case be opened against the five suspects within 24 hours, or she would lay the charges herself. She emailed the letter to Matlala and hand-delivered a copy thereof the
following day (Tuesday). We contacted the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala who confirmed that five municipal officials were apprehended, but denied any knowledge that one of them was related to a senior GTM manager. He also did not elaborate on what they were caught for, or where they were caught. “We have five officials who were caught and all of them were given notices of the employer’s intention to place them on precautionary suspensions to which they must provide reasons why they should not be placed on the said pre-suspensions( this is procedural),” Ndlala explained. “Investigations are ongoing to establish facts about the incidents and in due course disciplinary steps will unfold. I’m not even aware that there is a relative of one of the seniors, however that card will not save them from DC actions if there is evidence. They will receive the very same action as others depending on the gravity of the evidence after the disciplinary process is
concluded and there are recommendations for the institution of criminal proceedings those recommendations will be considered.” The Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala, informed us moments before deadline that the head of security at the municipality, Kenny Makhubele, indicated that SAPS were summoned on the day of the incident, but made no arrests as they discovered that the copper cables which were suspected to be stolen, were on the premises of the GTM. Makhubele allegedly advised that the department or individual who reported the matter should open a criminal case. By yesterday afternoon we had not managed to verify whether this had indeed been done. By law, this matter cannot be handled internally as it involves a serious crime and therefor criminal charges must be brought against the suspects. On the 28th of February 2017, two men were handed 12 years imprisonment of which four years were conditionally suspended, for stealing 650 metres of copper cabling in the Villliersdorp area.
The Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 which commenced on 1 June 2016, created far harsher sentencing and the granting of bail conditions for people who damage infrastructure for services such as transport, power, water and communications. The law creates a new offence: damaging infrastructure that disrupts the provision of essential services, whether publicly or privately owned. Previously, cable theft was tried as malicious damage to property and incurred minor penalties. The amendment however, makes provision for people to be charged with tampering with “basic service” infrastructure. There are minimum sentences for first-time copper thieves of three years, and a maximum 30 years for those involved in instigating or causing damage to infrastructure. We have informed the Hawks, who in turn have assigned and investigator to the matter. The DA has also taken the matter to parliament. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Weet jy hoeveel kos so kragopwekker? — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Two suspects evade arrest New horizons beckon Ben Vorster’s headmaster, Chris Denysschen told Bulletin on Monday morning that he has accepted the post of headmaster at the prestigious Waterkloof High School in Pretoria. We met with Denysschen in his office along with Eddie Vorster, Chairperson of the School Governing Body and Ms Isolde Fasondini who will be taking over the role of headmaster in a temporary capacity. “We want to inform all our community members, our parents and those prospective parents that the school governing body will ensure that only the best and most suitable candidate will be considered to fill the role of permanent headmaster,” Vorster said. “One need not be concerned as the culture and positive direction of Ben Vorster High School will still remain.” Denysschen will assume this post on
Yesterday morning (Thursday 31st of October) traffic around the Sasol fuelling station in Agatha Street came to a grinding halt as onlookers watched security officials chase three suspects through the area. According to reports the suspects were thieves who had robbed a pedestrian in the CBD earlier that morning and fled towards Agatha Street.
Unfortunately for them, alert community members spotted their vehicle and notified the local security companies who managed to apprehend one member of the trio. His two accomplices escaped on foot. Initial reports suggested that the gang were in possession of card cloning equipment and intended to hit the ATM at the fuelling station, but these reports were dismissed
the 1st of December this year. A list of potential candidates has already been identified and the School Governing Body will now begin the screening processes to ensure the best fit. In the interim, Ms Isolde Fasondini will occupy the role of acting principal of the school. Fasondini is no stranger to the community as she has been a part of the school for many years and boasts decades as an educator. She has also assumed the role of acting headmaster before and is well loved and respective among her peers. “I see our school’s community as the building resting on the foundation of a strong Christian belief system. Though there may come changes to the roofing structure, every brick (the pupils, parents, educators and management) will remain the same,” she said proudly.

Panic struck the owners of a transport company from Boksburg on the 26th of October when a shipment of tractors destined for Tzaneen, went missing. The truck was transporting three new Landini tractors from the manufacturer’s head office in Gauteng to Tzaneen Swaarvoertuie, when the signal from the truck’s tracking device stopped transmitting just after midday on Friday. “We last tracked our vehicle at around 12:45 as it exited Polokwane enroute to Tzaneen. We tried calling the driver, but his phone remained unanswered and our tracking company said that they could not reach the vehicle’s tracking device,” said a spokesperson for Ardo, the transport company. “We believe that there must have been a
signal jammer on our truck.” According to the company, their driver had been in their employee for more than a year and they never suspected that he would be involved in a crime. When they suspected foul play the owners immediately sent out reports over social media and a team from Ardo hit the road in search of the truck. “We suspected that they were heading towards Musina, towards the border and we drove every conceivable route around the Polokwane area. In response to our online alert, one person called in on Saturday morning and we found our truck’s horse burnt out on the R523 Waterpoort Road. The red dual-axle lowbed trailer, however, was missing and so to our driver.” At the time of going to print yester-
day afternoon, the tractors were still not found. The company suspects that the trailer was removed from their truck and attached to another vehicle. At the time of going to print the tractors had still not been found and authorities have been informed. Motorists in all areas of the region are requested to be on the look out for the red trailer with registration FZX934MP with three new blue Landini tractors. If anyone spots these vehicles please contact Lt Col Motloa VCIS Polokwane on 082 451 7184 or Lettie on 083 654 0057 or Hans on 061 168 1944. A reward of R20 000 has been offered for any information that will lead to the recovery of the tractors. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Granny’s Grumbles - The Intruder
During the war years in Rhodesia the farmers and people in outlying areas had a hard time, but the average people living in the suburbs of big cites did not really have too much of a problem, except that you never had a man around to do the dirty work. I can say this with certainty since I had spent the first few years of the war in Karoi, Sinoia and Chirundu so was well aware of happened there. When I moved back to my humble beginnings in a suburb of Harare I realised that things hadn’t much changed there. Even the Prime Minister only had one bodyguard and generally drove his own vehicle. Crime as such was negligible and certainly a rape or murder would have hit the headlines. Now as any ex Rhodesian wife who had a relative in the regular forces will tell you, Friday night was compulsory attendance for all regular soldiers at the so-called prayer meeting.
I say “so-called” through gritted teeth as the meeting started at five o’clock and you were lucky if you saw your husband before eleven o’clock and he would be three sheets to the wind. I actually wrote a letter to the newspaper complaining about this as it ruined any chance of a family weekend as hubby would be nursing a hangover on the Saturday and there would be “no speaks” on a Sunday. I suggested to the powers that be that the night be changed to the middle of the week – then the army could have them complete with their hangovers. “A Ministry of Defence spokesman (when asked to comment) said that this was a tradition dating back many years and the prayer meeting was only compulsory for one hour – unfortunately a small percentage of soldiers would take themselves off to other nightspots over which the army had no control” A small percentage??? Probably 90%. Anyway – I digress. It was a Friday night and as per normal I was in bed and sound asleep when my spouse arrived home. During the early hours of the morning I happened to turn over half asleep and noticed a figure in the bedroom doorway. Since my hubby was snoring away beside me it obviously wasn’t him so I dug my elbow into his ribs in an effort to wake him up. H didn’t even move so I let out a shriek and grabbed him round the neck. By the time my darling had roused himself to ask rather groggily what on earth was going on, the figure in the doorway had disappeared. After listening to my explanation he trotted around the house and on his return to the bedroom asked in a sceptical tone what on earth had made me think there had been anybody in the house. It was fairly obvious that he thought this was all a figment of my imagination, so I got out of bed and did my own trip through the house. I
found the back veranda window wide open and from there the intruder had obviously hopped through the bathroom window since all the paraphernalia that usually sat on the window-sill was in the washbasin. I lost no time on passing this on to my spouse who grunted and hauled himself out of bed with a look that indicated I was being a pain in the butt. However, he suddenly realised that the kist (which was situated about a metre from his side of the bed) and on which he always dumped his clothes after a night on the town was bare. No sign of his blazer, his trousers, his shirt or wallet in sight. To top everything his cigarettes had been taken…..that was a disaster….when a man with a hangover has a problem he needs a smoke!! This all transpired about 3.30 in the morning, so we waited until six and phoned the local police station. Within half an hour we had a detective and a finger-print lady at the house. After a quick chat about what had happened the fingerprint lady asked my husband to show her which windows were opened and I was asked by the detective if my husband was in the regular army. I confirmed that he was and his reply was “I assume he was at Friday night prayer meeting last night”. I was a bit shattered – how did he know? Evidently ours was the third house in that area that the intruder had robbed that night. Each robbery took place at the home of an Amy regular who was at prayer meeting. Evidently nobody had woken up at the other homes and quite a lot of stuff was taken. We were exceedingly lucky – the detective climbed over the fence that lead into the bush behind our house and found my husband’s wallet and keys which had obviously been dropped in the robber’s haste to get away. “Fortunate for you that your wife woke up” said the detective as he left. The answer was a deafening silence.

But when it comes to our brain many variables are seen. Our faith needs to be strong when we are given the news that something is wrong with us. There are unfortunately many charlatans out there, those professing that they have the knowledge to cure almost anything. This also applies to those who are in the church leadership, but have not had any formal training. My question to them is “why do I have to pay to have you pray for me?” Some church give their congregants concoctions to cure them declaring these to be blessed and if they do not work then it is the congregant’s fault that their faith is too weak to be cured. Unfortunately, they often have paid a vast some of money for this cure. God empowers all of us with gifts, I believe that He has given medical doctors the gift of healing although this gift can be present in others as well. But it is by His power and His power only that we are able to use these gifts. A lady came to the church the last week and asked if I could assist her as she had been told that she was demon possessed. To all intents and purposes she seemed completely normal and lucid. She asked me for some special cure to remove the snake that was living inside her body. She was looking for some sort of exorcism. I told her I do not have any special powers and that I felt that only God could cure her, however, I said I would intercede for her and ask God to bless her. I know that it is God’s almighty power that can heal and we are mere vessels which He can choose to use or not. Yet unfortunately there are those of us who want to believe we can cure all sorts of ills without God’s intervention. Prayer is a powerful tool and if use correctly can aide in the improvement of life. Sin is and will always be with us, but forgiveness is in the power of the Risen Christ. Have you accepted Christ as your Saviour or are you like the lady I mentioned putting your hope on earthly things? Do not be afraid to confess the Risen Christ and peace will come to you. Blessings

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Lenyenye youth release kwaito album A Lenyenye-based up and coming musician and artist is set to take on the music industry in Tzaneen with the release of his album due for February next year. Mahlodi Reginald Mashanya, popularly known as Mafisto in the township, said he fell in love with music at an early age while still at school and started performing at farewell functions for teachers and other functions. Mafisto told Bulletin in an interview that when he was in the seventh grade, at the Lenyenye Primary School in 2000, he organised a dance group with school mates which kickstarted his music career. “When in 2001 I enrolled in Phusela High School, I then joined the Love Life Community Development Centre where the work was made possible by the music instruments which were provided there.” He added that he was influenced by other known kwaito singers such as Mandoza of the Nkalakata fame, Mdu Masilela known for tracks such as “Chomi ya bana” and other performers of the same period. When asked whether he had a special message for the youths in his area, he said that people need to work hard so that they can achieve the results they dream of one day. “I appeal to the community at large to give our efforts support as well as book us for performances in order to raise funds
for more projects which will eventually help us to help the youth in the townships.” Mafisto is a teacher at Seboye high school in the township just a stone’s throw from where he completed high school. In one of his recent posts on Facebook, the singer said “I do not use alcohol to boost my performance, I am MaFisto the Magic.” He is most liked by most youths in the township because of his artistic prowess. Love Life is an organisation specialising in youth developments and has basis in all the regions of the province and beyond. Its ambassador is Fumayo Mabitsela. — Jan Mafetsa

Pfunanane Academy outside Modjadjiskloof held their annual concert last week and this year they told the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den. The production was named “Rescue in the Night” and portrayed Daniel’s courage and trust in God despite his dire circumstances. It was a well-orchestrated musical performed to perfection by the young stars of Pfunanane.
