Another Poolgate chapter

Tzaneen’s multi-million swimming facility in Crown Street might soon (and finally) have a permanent lifeguard without the added requirement of a chaperone. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality advertised a vacancy for a full time lifeguard at the facility to be employed on a 24 month contract at R9 995 per month. The advert was placed during last year and the closing date for applications was 24th of December 2018.

None of our readers were privy to the vacancy advertisement though, as the GTM seem to be continuing their boycott of the Far North Bulletin by not placing their notices in this paper.

The position was however open to all applications regardless of ethnicity, barring a few minor self-explanatory requirements in order to make it onto the candidates list.

Suffice it to say, the controversial Vikramjith “Vicky” Singh (62) who was appointed into the position of lifeguard during April of 2017, is no longer in the employ of the GTM. “He left more than a year ago,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. Far North Bulletin ran extensive articles on

We asked Ndlala whether the position of lifeguard was open to all applicants or whether a strict BEE or affirmative action policy was implemented, which he denied. “The position is not BEE, those who meet the requirements are welcome to apply.”

Hopefully the appointment of a permanent lifeguard will be handled appropriately and bring this debacle to an end permanently so that the residents can once again enjoy the swimming pool facility which they paid R17 million to refurbish more than three years ago.

Singh after we discovered that he had been fired from the same position at the Buffalo City Municipality’s Joan Harrison swimming complex in 2014. During our own investigations it came to light that at the time he was employed by the GTM, he was in fact still busy with the court case for the allegations of financial mismanagement and theft that had been made against him by the Hawks and the Buffalo City Municipality.

In our official media inquiry to the spokesperson of the GTM, the topic of Vicky Singh was for the most part vaguely acknowledged and no real details offered as to where he went, why he left or whether he resigned or was dismissed.

Ndlala denied any knowledge of the court case when we asked about the progress in the matter. “We are not aware of such developments as he is no longer our employee.”

The new vacancy advertisement clearly stated that all applicants would be screened for criminal records or pending criminal cases which would negatively impact on their chances of employment. Ndlala said that this was the case with Singh as well, but at the time of his ap-

The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) has appointed their director for Community Services, Dumisani Shithlangu, as their acting Municipal Manager. This decision was taken to afford their Municipal Manager, Republic Monakedi, time to recover after he was assaulted during an armed robbery at his private office in Polokwane last week.

Monakedi was allegedly robbed while in discussion with an acquaintance in his private office in Polokwane. Five armed men stormed into the office and allegedly stole Monakedi and his unnamed friend’s cellphones and car keys before they assaulted the Mopani boss, stole a large sum of money and fled.

Though the MDM and the SAPS have not been willing to disclose the amount of money that was stolen in the attack, national media have been reporting an amount of R5 million which they allege was confirmed by their own

sources.

Bulletin spoke to MDM spokesperson, Witness Tiva who said that it is absurd to believe that Monakedi would have that amount of cash at his home and said that the municipality is considering legal action against the media outlets who spread what he called, unfounded accusations. He did not confirm or deny the existence of a large amount of cash nor did he allude to the possible origins of the stash.

He did however dismiss the claims made by the Sowetan newspaper, that the money was collected from service providers in the province and was destined to be used in Durban during the ANC’s January 8 statement event.

“The Mopani District Municipality’s concern revolves around a paragraph which is quoting an anonymous source alleging that our Municipal Manager collected R5m from service providers. Our area of concern here is that the

reporter did not afford the Mopani District Municipality an opportunity to respond to the specific allegations,” Tiva explained.

“What he [the reporter] did was to only ask us to react on the physical attack of our Municipal Manager Mr Republic Monakedi, of which we did. As the Mopani District Municipality we are taking the allegations the publication is making against our employee Mr. Monakedi in a serious light. The article is tarnishing the image of our institution as it portrays Monakedi as a person who solicited money from the service providers contracted to the institution,” he concluded.

At the time of going to print we had received news that Monakedi was back at his home recovering and will most likely return to work soon.

Suspicion surrounds MDM records robbery Merely a week after the assault and robbery on their municipal manager, Republic Monakedi, the Mopani District Municipality reported an alleged robbery at their offices in Giyani. According to reports from their spokesperson, the municipal workers arrived for work on Monday, 7th of January, to find that the office of Du-

ditional Affairs in Limpopo, Jerry Ndou, has noted with concern the attack on the Municipal Manager and recent break-in at the Mopani District Municipality offices.

Ndou urged the Mopani District Municipality’s political leadership and Administrative support to make an assessment on the safety of their human capital and property, this will help in mitigating risks associated with these attacks undertaken against the Municipality and officials.

“Our employees should work in a friendly environment where they can be able to discharge their responsibilities and ensure clean governance takes place in the provisioning of service delivery which takes place unhindered,” he said.

News of the robbery made it to social media where various commentators expressed their concern over the many questions that surround this incident. These include the reasoning behind targeting specifically an office housing nothing but documents. Conspiracy theorists have aired their views on the matter stating that the robbery of the municipal manager and the theft of these sensitive documents in such a short space of time could point to more than just coincidence.

No money was stolen and it would appear that only documents were taken. Which documents?

“An internal investigation into the robbery is underway and we have not yet established which documents were taken from the offices,” said Witness Tiva, spokesperson for the MDM. “We can offer the assurance that despite the theft of these documents, the projects will continue and there will be no interruption in service delivery to our communities.”

Bulletin asked Tiva how it was possible that the robbers targeted this very specific office and managed to break in and make off with their bounty without being noticed by, or apprehended by the security on the grounds.

He said that they were conducting investigations and have asked for explanations from the appointed security contractor. According to him the SAPS were conducting similar investigations and forensics have already fine combed the scene.

Wolkberg flash flood claims hiker — “But the caving and hiking were just a fraction of what she had done in her life and she still wanted to do so much more.”

Despite preferring hiking, Irene was an excellent caver. She was one of the initial explorers of Armageddon Cave (one of SA’s largest caves, which was featured on Carte Blanche a few years ago). She also took part in the Rising Star Expedition (where Homo Naledi was discovered at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site) and guided the six “underground

The New Year started tragically for Steven Tucker when a flash flood swept the love of his life forever from him. His wife, the experienced hiker and caver, Irene Krüger (30), lost her life in a freak occurrence on the 2nd of January. She was reading a book when a flash flood swept her away.

Bulletin spoke to Steven this week and he walked us through the events that led up to the tragedy that had forever altered his life.

On the 29th of December last year, four members of the Speleological Exploration Club out of Gauteng, embarked on a week-long hike through the Wolkberg mountains wilderness area. Irene and Steven, Matthew de Beer and Chase Kaplan hiked in on the 29th of December and were intending to hike out on the 5th of January 2019.

Every member of the party was an experienced hiker or caver in his Irene Krüger or her own right and the club they were members of, had been exploring caves in South Africa since 1954.

After a while it rained a bit harder.

“Not much, so we went searching upstream for a larger and dryer shelter. Irene stayed at the small shelter with our day packs and was busy reading,” Steven continued. “A few minutes later we were maybe a hundred meters away at most, when the stream suddenly doubled in size and seconds later a massive wall of brown water came down.”

He had hoped that, because Irene wasn’t directly at the original stream, the water would somehow miss her. Steven said that they could not make their way back to where she was.

Matthew found a way down along the side of the valley, and the guys managed to get back to

their camp site. By then most of the water had already subsided and was almost back to the level it had been 30 minutes before.

“We split up, I climbed up the waterfalls to where we had left her. Matthew and Chase went looking downstream. I found some things that had been in our day packs, but no sign of her. When I got back to the camp site an hour later, Chase arrived soon after and said that he and Matthew had found her, 2.4 kilometres downstream.”

They had found her at about 15:00 that afternoon, approximately within an hour or hourand-a-half of when it happened, and they had carried her out of the water.

“Chase helped me to cover Irene’s body as best we could, but we had to return to the camp site for the night. Matthew hiked out, more than 14 kilometres, then had to drive about 10 kilometres to where he could get cell phone reception.”

Matthew called the Gauteng Mountain Search and Rescue team who in turn alerted the Off Road Rescue Unit (from Gauteng and Tzaneen) to assist.

They all drove through the night to reach the site in the morning. The 14 kilometre drive in, took them almost as long as Matthew had taken to hike out.

“Matthew and Chase were both amazing in dealing with everything,” Steven continued, “The rescue teams arrived early in the morning. I was so relieved, not because rescue had arrived, but because friends had arrived. They were all amazing in the situation, especially as many of them also knew Irene.”

The memorial service for Irene will take place at Safari Nursery’s Chapel on Saturday morning the 12th of January at 11am.

Councillor denies absconding from Mayhem Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s ward 31 Councillor, Justice Ramodipa, has denied that he fled when the workers contracted to clean the streets in the township went on a rampage and spilled garbage in front of his house. The protesting former employees also littered the main street, the community hall, the CBD, and later the satellite offices of the GTM. He told Bulletin that he was not a coward.

The drama unfolded on the last day of the year (December 31) when hundreds of employees contracted to the Empowered Public Works Programme (EPWP) arrived at work at the satellite offices of the GTM in Lenyenye to find that all machinery was removed from the premises. No notice was given that the contract time had expired. In anger, dust bins were

overturned and garbage thrown at the offices of the GTM and other strategic areas.

The strike proceeded for a week until the police in Maake intervened to quell the situation.

Workers then resolved to stage protests at the offices of the municipality in Tzaneen. A worker who asked to remain anonymous said that though it was rumoured that the contractor had been changed, workers lost it upon being told that they were not going to be paid for the month for their December work.

Local councillor, Justice Ramodipa disputed claims by this reporter that he and other members of the ward committee ran for safety when the workers went on the rampage. He said that after the streets were soiled, he together with members of the ward committee, started

Zuma to return as Minister in 2019 The listing conference of the ANC, though affirming Limpopo premier Stan Mathabatha as the next leader of the Limpopo cabinet, has come with surprises in which former president Jacob Zuma may emerge as a new member of parliament.

This emerged at the national listing conference of the ruling party which was held in Durban recently. The argument is that he was not charged and found guilty of anything.

Jacob Zuma’s name was among the 200 which the party was to send for vetting before presenting them to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for registration.

He stood at number 74. In Limpopo the name of Premier Stan Mathabatha was the first, followed by the Agriculture MEC Bioskop Makamu who was the Mopani ANC secretary prior the provincial conference in June.

Acting ANC spokesperson Dakota Legoete, said the first 25 percent of the nominees will fall into the safety net. He said the party will

have a shortlist of 150 names and the others will be placed in the reserve list. Legoete added that the first name will be followed by that of a woman, and the third person should be a person with specialised skills.

Candidates should be those who will be able to enhance the integrity of the party.

The guidelines for the selection of the candidates state that they should be members of the party in good standing, have experience or education or expertise to create a constructive input in parliament. They should also have no criminal record, no record of fostering divisions within the organisation, no history of ill-discipline and corruption or any breaches of the code of conduct.

In Limpopo people whose names are linked to controversial #VBS were omitted from the list because they were not allowed to attend the conference after they were found guilty by the Integrity commission of the party which recommended that they be suspended.

Twenty-five dogs and 29 cats, of which some of the animals were donated to the SPCA, came into the facility from 31 December 2018 to 4 January 2019. The donated animals were due to pet owners leaving town or moving to premises that prohibit animals.

Only three of the 25 dogs, a Staffie, a Jack Russell and one Yorkie, have been claimed by their rightful owners. All three dogs ran petrified from their homes due to the fireworks. The other breeds still at the SPCA are Boerboels, Jack Russells, Terriers, Border Collie crosses and German Shepherds. Some of the animals in the SPCA kennels were traumatised by the fireworks and had to be sedated. Some ten cat owners are still looking for their animals. The SPCA has protocols and criteria in place to make sure that the new animal is happy in the family environment.

Pet owners have to be careful when going on holiday and leaving their pets with house sitters.

Out of their routine many pets run away. Often people who go on holiday and leave their animals in the care of house sitters find their animals poisoned.

Four dogs in Gunzula in the Letsitele area were poisoned with the banned deathly two-step on the Friday and the next night the house was robbed. Poisoning of pets is often a precursor to a home robbery.

Pet owners should make sure that certain breeds are kept safely in their yard as those are the dogs that get stolen. These are German Shepherds, Boerboels, Ridgebacks, Pitbulls, Staffordshire terriers, Bull terriers and Rottweilers. They are used for illegal fighting, as bait dogs or for back street breeding. Some of the above breeds were stolen in November 2018 and never found.

There were also many complaints of dogs found in snares. Snare matters should be referred to environmental services at 082 461 9764 or 082 801 1512.

All snares have identification marks and often the culprits can be caught.

Members of the public are urged to open up their hearts and donate puppy and kitten food to the Letaba SPCA.

Granny’s Grumbles - Tourists

We all know stories of tourists who have been attacked by animals due to the fact that they never seem to realise that a day in the Kruger or any other game park is not the same as going to the zoo. These are animals that are wild and unpredictable.

Now during the sixties in Rhodesia when I lived n Chirundu (the border post between Rhodesia and Zambia) numerous episodes took place that caused hilarity amongst the locals. I One such episode took place on a Thursday afternoon on the Zambian side of the border but I was the recipient of this encounter which I found highly amusing. On Thursday afternoons the RMS truck would arrive at the small café/motel – the motel section being two rondavels behind the small café which boasted four tables each with four chairs. Since there were only 40 people living in Chirundu and most of them would be at work there was plenty of space for all of us to sit in an air-conditioned environment and

wait for the truck to arrive. Since it brought our mail from Karoi which was 100 miles away, plus our meat we would often sit for hours as it was rarely on time. On this particular Thursday the tables were all occupied and two middle-aged ladies walked in – both very red in the face and dripping with sweat.

I ordered my children to vacate their seats and offered them to the tourists – overseas tourists have an uncanny knack of sticking out like sore thumbs . I suspect that most of them have either read or seen the movie “Out of Africa” because they love khaki or camouflage green. Anyway these two ladies joined our table and I asked where they had come from. They had left Lusaka early that morning but close to the border they had been held up by a herd of cattle that just refused to move off the road. Since there were no cattle in the Zambesi Valley due to tsetse fly I suggested that maybe it was some other animal that held them up. It was fairly obvious that they had been in the middle of an extremely large herd of buffalo – I was horrified to hear that not only had they manoeuvred their way right to the centre of the herd by hooting but had eventually opened their windows, hit the sides of the car and yelled at the top of their voices. Since buffalo can be very unpredictable and I certainly didn’t know of anybody who would ever try anything so foolhardy I thought this was maybe a case of ignorance indeed being bliss.

The second episode was far more foolhardy and indeed downright dangerous.

A Greek man by the name of Savas was employed to escort convoys of new cars from Beira through to the Zambian side of the bridge. In those days cars had to be “run in”.

In other words you didn’t just climb into a new car and pretend you were at Kyalami – you drove for the first 300 miles at say 30mph

and after that you could start working up to speed. Savas had to lead the convoy which numbered about 30 cars at a specified speed for the entire trip from Beira to Chirundu.

Since leading a convoy of cars at a specified speed for nearly 900 miles every week is not the most exciting employment he found any distraction enjoyable and this one was amazing!

Evidently about 20 miles from their eventual destination - Savas had stopped the entire convoy some 40 or 50 metres from a large herd of elephants that was crossing the road. Suddenly a young lady in a TR2 (Triumph small two-seater convertible) pulled up alongside him and asked why the convoy had stopped. Savas explained that they were waiting for the elephants to cross. “Well – I haven’t got time to wait for a bloody herd of elephants to cross the road – I have to be in Lusaka tonight”. With that she raced off towards the elephants and tried her best to squeeze into a small gap between two large specimens. When it became obvious that they were not going to move for her she put her hand on her hooter and let rip.

According to Savas the elephant that had been just about to cross and was directly next to the car let out a bellow and brought its foot down heavily on the right hand side of the bonnet which crumpled – the right fronthand wheel was also flattened. After surveying its handiwork for a while the elephant removed its foot and carried on its way. Savas waited until the entire herd was out of the way and he then drove to the remains of the convertible where a very shaken young lady was in tears and wondering why the elephant had damaged her car. She was taken to the motel where the owner dried her tears and put her up for the night.

I cannot believe that we are already 11 days into the New Year and the world or South Africa has not come to an end, yes, things are not as we wish them to be. It is the uncertainty that worries us, not knowing what will happen in the future. With the elections set to for this year many of us are concerned with the level of violence that sometimes precedes an election. People always want their party to win and unfortunately some will do anything to see this happen. I feel very sorry for the marginalised because of ignorance of the true meaning of democracy and are coerced by all sorts of rhetoric to vote for a party. Ignorance of the facts and what to do about them if they feel unhappy about them. Often some vote with their hearts and not their minds.

I see Christianity in many ways in the same light, some are uncertain whether or not they will gain anything by following Christ. So how do we find out the benefits of following Christ? The Scriptures are the main source to find out who Jesus was and is our main guide. All the writers, especially those of the New Testament, tell us about why Jesus came to earth. Those of the Old Testament tell of the prophesies, of what the future held, especially with regard to the coming of the Messiah. God kept His promises and sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world. By sending His Son, He was indicating how much we would gain by following Jesus and the example He set. We are promised eternal life, victory over death. This is the ultimate benefit, but there are many other benefits as well. Having faith in something or someone unseen gives us hope for the future and the knowledge that by that faith we will get through all the challenges that life brings us. Fear is our deadliest enemy, fear of the unknown, what tomorrow may bring. Having Christ in our lives gives us hope. Just as God kept His promises by sending Jesus to earth, so does Christ keep His promise to be with us, always. We will always have trials in our life, it is how we handle them that gets us through them.

If we confess our sins, we are forgiven, but we must also accept that we are forgiven.

The key to this is to accept Christ’s offer, to invite Him into our lives and to follow His ways, even if they prove challenging.

May God truly give you peace this New Year.

Update: The great Power Crisis

Absolute blackout looming There is still no light at the end of the un-electrified tunnel for residents and farmers within the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. December saw some areas without power for more than six days straight and recorded an average of four to five hours a day without power.

Appliances failed, businesses lost money and the Limpopo Young Farmer of the Year, Hannes Wolvaardt, lost his entire crop because he had no electricity on his farm to pump water. Letsitele Police Station was unreachable for three days because they had no electricity and therefore no communication.

Our source within the municipality revealed that currently the GTM is waiting for delivery on transformers they sent in for repairs – in November only. November is too late as service providers close over the December period and only reopen again this week. There is also not sufficient protection on the system and kilometres of overhead lines have still not been cleared of bush and shrubbery that goes shorts during heavy winds or storms.

In a speech at Merensky High School yesterday morning, GTM mayor, Maripe Mangena admitted

that the problems facing the Electrical Engineering Department was due to their own lack of maintenance. He also mentioned that it was an inherited legacy, but proclaimed that the GTM was taking an aggressive approach to solving the crisis. He mentioned again, the R90 million loan secured from the Development Bank which will be used for the upgrading of the infrastructure.

So far, the GTM have received R40 million of the total amount, which they then allegedly used to purchase five Nissan NP300 service vehicles. A source alleged that the five fuel cards (one for each vehicle) were declined by a bank, but did not want to mention which bank or the reasons why.

This means the vehicles are not functioning at their full potential and can therefore in no way add to upgrading of the grid.

We issued the spokesperson of the municipality with a lengthy inquiry on this and other shocking claims (pun intended) to which we had not yet received a response. We also sent the inquiry through to Thapelo Matlala, the Municipal Manager.

In our inquiry we asked whether the municipality had purchased the vehicles cash or if the five bakkies

were financed through a bank. It would make sense that if the latter were true, then the R40 million would have to have been assigned to the actual upgrading of the physical infrastructure as mentioned last year when the loan was acquired. If that is the case then surely the money should have been spent on acquiring new transformers, replacing aged and broken electrical poles and overpatched electrical supply cables?

In all of this, the Electrical Engineering boss, Sam Lelope remains as silent as he is invisible. We have received word that he was ill for a time and that Andrew Laubscher had taken up the reins in his stead. We have yet to gain clarity on Lelope’s competency to occupy the director’s seat, which we have been struggling to obtain since his appointment in 2017.

Then there is the matter of the five municipal electricians who were caught by GTM security officials, attempting to steal copper cables in November last year. The five employees have reportedly been suspended with full pay while the internal investigation takes place.

arrested the suspects. The investigating officer in the case is a Constable Ngobeni and the case number is CAS11/11/2018.

Previously, cable theft was tried as malicious damage to property and incurred minor penalties. The Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 which commenced on 1 June 2016, however, created far harsher sentencing and the granting of bail conditions for people who damage infrastructure for services such as transport, power, water and communications.

The law creates a new offence: damaging infrastructure that disrupts the provision of essential services, whether publicly or privately owned, makes provision for people to be charged with tampering with “basic service” infrastructure. There are minimum sentences for firsttime copper thieves of three years, and a maximum 30 years for those involved in instigating or causing

damage to infrastructure.

If you believe that these five employees should be arrested and charged under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015, please send us an email to joe@bulletin.us.com so that we can start the process of drawing up a petition to force the authorities to abide by the law. The entire area is being held hostage by incompetence and it is only through standing together that we have any hope of changing our situation.

At the time of going to print we had received no response to our two page inquiry from the office of the spokesperson, Neville Ndlala and the police have made no further progress in their investigations. We cannot say with much certainty whether the five suspects have indeed been suspended either. Nor can we allude to the certainty that they were the only culprits.

Dreaded Foot-and-Mouth outbreak hits Limpopo The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has been informed of positive laboratory results for Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in cattle in the Vhembe District of Limpopo. Samples were collected during a disease investigation undertaken after reports of lameness in cattle. The positive result came from a location just outside the FMD Control Zone, in the Free Zone without vaccination.

A team of experts from the Department and from the Limpopo Veterinary Services is on the ground conducting further investigations to verify the results and to determine the extent of the outbreak.

Control measures will be determined by the findings of this investigation.

The matter was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on Monday, 7 Jan, 2019). This development has led to the temporary suspension of the official OIE recognised FMD-free certification.

FMD is a severe, highly contagious viral disease which affects livestock. It has has significant, negative economic impact. The disease affects cattle, pigs (domestic and wild), sheep, goats, and other cloven-hoofed animals. The disease does not affect human beings. Signs of the disease may include lameness, depression and mouth lesions which cause a reluctance by the animal to take in feed. Suspected cases of FMD must be reported to the local State Veterinarian immediately.

The affected area is under quarantine and no movement of animals and/or animal products is allowed.

Farmers further away from the outbreak are cautioned to observe bio-security measures; not to allow any new animals into their herds, and to minimise the movement of their own herds to other farms.

A rollicking ride through a village launched Müller Swart launched his book “A Creepy Bedtime Story”, under the pen name of Max Müller, at the Pennefather at the close of 2018. Müller was born in the Free State and has lived for many years in Kensington, Johannesburg. He obtained his Masters of Art in Philosophy at Stellenbosch University, is a processing engineer and works in a structured environment. He’s involved with the Pearson Institute, a digital programme that offers online university courses. Müller’s

written several academic books and this is his first foray into fictional writing.

His father was a great story teller and “A Creepy Bedtime Story” fired up his creative side to tell this collection of unnerving tales.

Opening the launch, Professor Louis Changuion said that Müller’s book contains all three aspects that make for a best seller - sex, humour, mystery and suspense. Louis categorises the book as surrealism.

area for the past 15 years and much of his book shows glimpses of this area and its people although fictitious. There’s mention of the Main Street which seems remarkably similar to Rissik Street. Then there’s the Cheerio farm where disused freezers and bodies play a major role.

There’s also the local craft beer but it’s called Viper. The ingredients contain a secret and that is the venom of the Haenertsburg shy and endemic berg adder. This fictitious village was founded on copper whereas Haenertsburg was

founded due to gold being found nearby.

The book contains fictitious names but there are glimpses of real life characters that live in the Haenertsburg area. Müller makes brilliant usage of drawing the reader into his book with vivid descriptions that tickle the senses of smell, hearing and sight.

Power outages threaten job security “If these power outages continue at Cloudlands, we will have to retrench 30% of our 62 employees in January 2019,” says Lawrence Rupp (29) manager of the construction timber farm Cloudlands outside Haenertsburg.

Rupp says, “This latest seven day outage has meant a R56, 000.00 loss in production per day.”

One phase is down and Cloudlands needs three phases to run all their equipment needed for its business.

“Our biggest sales are at this time of the year and we aren’t able to meet the demand because of the power cuts.”

The main outlet for Cloudlands is in Waltloo, Silverton in Pretoria.

Welcome Witbooi – life after The Firm The festive season brings tourists from all over the place to the village of Haenertsburg. Seated at the newly opened Magoebaskloof Farmstall was Welcome Witbooi (31). This is an extraordinary tale of a man who turned his life around from one of crime into a life of positivity.

Welcome was born in Valhalla Park in the Cape Flats. The only child of a Tswana mother and a father from Namibia, Welcome was an A grade scholar until he joined a street gang, known as The Firm, at the age of 14. This gave him a false sense of belonging and these gangs are the biggest underlying racists. He had a disconnected relationship with his father and his mother was devoid of any motherly instincts.

Welcome says, “I became a drug peddler and worked for the token mayor of Valhalla Park, Colin Stanfield, who died of cancer. His brother now keeps the brand alive.”

His activities within The Firm consisted of armed robbery, CIT heists which were the most exhilarating, extortion kidnapping, ransoming, and killings amongst other gangs especially for turf in the Cape Flats and to take out the competition. The weapon of initiation is a knife called a sable. It’s a small, effective knife used for close contact and showed one’s willingness to do whatever the gang wanted.

At 17 Welcome got his steel (firearm) an illegal .38 special snub-nose with eight bullets. He used it many times especially when it came to gang wars. The agreement between him and Colin was not to leave school so that he could continue peddling dagga and Mandrax at school.

In order to get more respect within the gang he had to take the life of an innocent person. The older gang members chose a random female victim in Durbanville. Welcome first encountered

the maid at the front door. Unbeknown to him it was a day care centre. As he pointed his gun at the victim one of the little children asked, “Are you a policeman?”

He couldn’t pull the trigger. Welcome got into the getaway car, the house emergency button had been pressed and all seven gang members were arrested as they tried to leave Durbanville. Negotiations began in the police van and, as the youngest; Welcome was expected to take the fall. He was lured into a false sense of security being told that he’d only get two years as he’s a first time offender.

He was sentenced to 23 years for breaking and entering, pointing a firearm, being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and assaulting the maid. Drakenstein, a juvenile prison, was full, so he was sent to Pollsmoor Prison.

He had to become part of the numbers gang to survive. This, he reckons, was his second big mistake.

He’d seen rapes and murders at Pollsmoor and didn’t want to fall victim to those. There were three gangs – the 26s, 27s and 28s. He chose the strongest highest number, the 28s. One could become another man’s bitch “die wyfie” or a soldier. I chose the latter.

One had to stab a correctional officer to death to get to the top to become a general. Each time the 28er would get a painful star-shaped tattoo at the top of the shoulder. Welcome has eight stars – four on the right and four on the left. He was in command of two-and-ahalf-thousand men by the age of 25. He underwent eight days of training to learn

Meeting a prison minister, David Bliss, a missionary from Massachusetts in the States, changed his life. He decided to get out of the numbers gang. In order to do this he had to make a formal request to the head of prison. Four generals from four other prisons had to weigh up his reason for leaving. Two generals stand in front of you and the two behind are the executioners.

Welcome’s saving grace was that he’d taught one of the generals to read and write.

After leaving 28 he was put into solitary confinement. He applied for a bursary and two years later got his Adult Basic Education and Training through UNISA. He was transferred to Goodwood prison where he taught others to read and write. He was released on good behaviour in 2012 having served 14 years of his 23 year prison sentence.

He joined the Sonke Gender Justice Network, a human rights organization, in the division of prison affairs. He dealt with offenders who were being introduced back into society. He developed Beyond Bars, a programme to help offenders reintegrate back into society. This brought him the attention of NICRO (National Institute of Crime Prevention). They often used him as a consultant. Welcome started EDLS (Education, Development and Leadership Solutions) working with young boys and girls in gangs to get them out of the gangs. He worked with institutions of education to get kids back into school instead of being part of the gangs. He changed the EDLS name to The Heart and Soul Foundation and recently opened a branch in Petervale in Sandton as gangs have begun operating in the Johannesburg area.

He has 365 youths in his care in Johannesburg. The Foundation works with children individually, giving them a sense of identity and belonging. He does parenting workshops as parents aren’t clued up to what their kids are doing.

Welcome was asked by a film crew to consult on prison culture. They wanted to turn the book ‘The Numbers’ by Jonathan Steinberg into a movie. It’s neither real nor honest. The award winning director, Roland Joffe, changed the script to Welcome’s life in prison. He got a part in ‘The Forgiven’, and played alongside Australian actor Eric Bana as Piet Blomfeld who killed people in the apartheid era, and Forest Whitaker from the USA as Desmond Tutu.

The gang leaders teach their members to hate. Now Welcome teaches ex-gang children to love.

Sy is ook die toppresteerder op Plasieland met ‘n gemiddeld van 91%.

Carmi sê dat Wiskunde haar gunstelingvak was en dat passievolle onderwysers haar aangespoor en geïnspireer het. In haar vrye tyd is sy ‘n familiemens wat in die atletiekseisoen aan velditems deelgeneem het en ook die klavier laat dreun het.

Op die vraag wat haar wenresep is, het sy gelag en geantwoord: “Boude op die stoel!”

Behalwe vir die akademie het Anya aan landloop deelgeneem en ook haar silwer Presidentstoekenning behaal.

Haar harde werk is beloon met ‘n gemiddeld van 90.5%. Sy glo dat elke leerder sy/haar eie studiemetode moet ontdek en konsekwent toepas. Vir haar het die maak van opsommings die deurslag gegee.

Anya is ingeskryf vir B.Com Beleggingsbestuur by TUKS en is erg opgewonde oor die nuwe hoofstuk in haar lewe.

Hoërskool Merensky spog weer hierdie jaar met uitstekende 2018 matriekuitslae. Die 186 matrikulante oes 249 onderskeidings. Dit is ‘n gemiddeld van 1.3 onderskeidings per kandidaat.

96.2% van die kandidate kwalifiseer om by hoëronderwysinstellings te gaan studeer: 76% Baccalaurus kandidate en 19.8% diploma kandidate met ’n slaagsyfer van 97.3%.

Behalwe vir Carmi en Anya se agt elk, het Chanel Dohse en Jason Mellett elkeen 5 onderskeidings behaal. 5 Leerders spog met vier onderskeidings en 12 leerders met drie onderskeidings.

Hierdie puik prestasie sorg dat die Plasies nommer ses in die top 10 skole in die Limpopo provinsie inneem en as topskool in die Mopani-distrik gekroon is (die enigste skool in die Mopani-distrik wat onder die top 10 in Limpopo val).

96% Pass rate for Vossies Ben Vorster High School achieved a pass rate of 96.3% for the 2018 Matric Final exams with 207 distinctions and 975 of their students qualifying for further studies. Three of their students achieved six distinctions including Lerato Hutamo (ENGFA, MATH, LIFE, ACCN, LFSC, PHSC), Wilco Jansen van Rensburg (AFRHL, ENGFA, MATH, LIFE, LFSC, PHSC) and Clara Molokwane (ENGFA, MATH, LIFE, ECCN, PHSC, APMATH).

Further to these remarkable results, five of their students achieved five distinctions and they were Nielia Blignaut (AFRHL, ENGFA, LIFE, LFSC, VSLA), Leonard Cheney (AFRHL, ENGFA, LIFE, LFSC, PHSC), Lumé Jacobs (AFRHL, ENGFAL, MLIT, LIFE, VSLA), Anzeret Scheepers (AFRHL, ENGFA, LIFE, LFSC, VSLA) and Rumbi Shipalane (XITHL, ENGFA, LIFE, GEOG, MATH).

LIMPOPO’S RESULTS AT A GLANCE • The Class of 2018 is the first to be introduced to 12 new subject offerings, comprising the South African Sign Language (Home Language), written by 46 candidates; as well as Civil Technologies, Mechanical Technologies, and Electrical Technologies – each with three subjects; as well as Technical Mathematics and Technical Science, written by 41 005 candidates.

• The scope and size of the 2018 NSC examinations is the second largest enterprise to the National General Elections in the country.

• 147 question papers were set; 8 million question papers were printed; 7.6 million scripts were produced and delivered countrywide; 6 888 secure examination centres were established; 65 000 invigilators, and 41 000 markers were appointed in 141 secure marking

centres.

• The total number of candidates, who registered for the November 2018 NSC examinations was 790 843 (compared to 802 431 in 2017); comprising 624 733 full-time candidates (compared to 621 155 in 2017), and 176 110 part-time candidates (compared to 173 276 in 2017).

• In 2018, 74 of the 75 districts attained

pass rates of 60% and above (compared to 66 of the 70 districts in 2017) and 34 of the 75 districts attained pass rates of 80% and above (compared to 31 of the 70 districts in 2017).

• The Bachelor passes achieved by learners in “no fee” schools stand at 84 700 (compared to 76 300 in 2017); while fee-paying schools produced 76 599 Bachelor passes (compared to 67 867 in 2017).

• Limpopo attained 70.6%, (an improvement of 3.2% from the 67.4% achieved in 2017) Eastern Cape attained 71.4%, (an improvement of 5.6% from the 65.8% achieved in 2017) Northern Cape attained 75.2%, (a decline of 2.4% from 77.6% in 2017) KwaZulu-Natal attained 76.8%, (an improvement of 3.2% from the 73.6% achieved in 2017) Mpumalanga attained 80.4%, (an improvement of 3.8% from the 76.6% achieved in 2017) Western Cape attained 83.2%, (a decline of 1.2% from 84.4% achieved in 2017) North West attained 83.8%, (an improvement of 1.7% from 82.1% achieved in 2017) Gauteng attained 89%, (an improvement of 3% from 86% achieved in 2017) Free State attained 91.1%, (an improvement of 1.3% from 89.8% achieved in 2017) • The 2018 NSC overall pass rate for 2018 is 79.4% - up from 76.5% in 2017.

Photos: GKT Sportspics Lance Trueman, a star cricketer from the Stanford Lake College stables, was selected as an all-rounder for the u/17 Limpopo Impala Cricket provincial team which took part in the u/17 interprovincial tournament held in Durban from the 12th to the 16th of December.

Trueman impressed with both the bat and the

ball, notching up a man of the match performance in their first out against KZN for 3-32 in 10 overs including 5 maidens. He was amongst the top all-rounders in the tournament too and received an award for his performance against North West.

Trueman’s bowling figures for the five innings in the five games he played included 10 mai-

dens in 35.3 overs, 12 wickets for just 129 runs and an economy rate of 3.46 with an average of 10.3. His best bowling performance was against North West where he clocked 3/14. On the batting side of the tables he took to the pitch in four innings in five games and scored 76 runs off 135 balls during his partnership with Mubin Patel.

Together they were Limpopo’s top scorers.

His performance earned him an invite to the Protea’s net sessions prior to the First Test against Pakistan at Supersport Park in Centurion. Here he was afforded the opportunity to bowl to the Pakistani’s the following day, fulfilling a life-long dream for the young Badger.
