A legal dispute has erupted between residents of Phalaborwa and the Letaba Sheriff, Tertius Robertson, and his deputy, last week. This after a video emerged over social media allegedly showing Robertson and his deputy, Victor Dilibo, removing a female driver from behind the steering of a Toyota single cab delivery vehicle (bakkie) in the driveway of a business premises in Anna Botha Street. The incident occurred on the 25th of January. The video shows Sonet Osmers (54) sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. The passenger door is ajar and the Sheriff is seen inside the vehicle with what looks to be paperwork that he is presenting to her on the seat of the vehicle. The sheriff removes something from the vehicle and walks over to a young school boy and hands it to him before returning to the passenger side of the vehicle and opening the cubbyhole. The young boy in school uniform follows closely behind him. Dilibo, in the meantime is seen approaching the driver’s side door which he opens and starts a conversation with Osmers who loosens her seatbelt but remains seated in the vehicle. It appears as though the deputy is trying to get her to exit the vehicle which she is allegedly refusing to do. Dilibo is seen pushing her (Osmers) seat backwards before he is joined by Robertson and the two of them try and pull Osmers from the car. The video shows Robertson and Osmers engage in a brief scuffle as she exists the vehicle and deputy climbs in behind the wheel. Osmers enters the vehicle in the passenger seat and her and Dilibo drive off camera. Bulletin spoke to the family of the woman in the video clip and they explained what happened. We also received a statement from Osmers detailing the event. According to her she feared for her life as she thought she was being hijacked in her driveway. It was only when she saw Robertson that she
recognized him as the Sheriff. She said in her statement that when she asked the men why they were taking the vehicle, Robertson said that it was for defaulting on payments to Wesbank. He presented her with a warrant to that effect. She explained to them that the vehicle was not her property and that it belonged to her son whom she called and was on the way to the scene. She asked them to wait five minutes for him to arrive. Allegedly they refused and said that they are taking the vehicle after which they started packing up her personal belongings and removing it from the vehicle. “Mr Robertson grabbed me by my legs and pulled me out of the vehicle and then by my arm to move me away from the vehicle. I told Mr Robertson that I was going to lay an assault charge against him. Mr Dilibo then got into the vehicle and threw the warrant document out of the window. I picked it up and walked around and got into the passenger side of the vehicle and he drove off.” Osmers said that she asked Dilibo where they were going, to which he allegedly replied that he was going to Tzaneen if she wanted to come with, because he and Robertson are both from Tzaneen. He also asked her why she had behaved in the manner that she did to which she replied that she wanted them to wait for the owner to arrive in order to resolve the situation. Osmers then asked him to drive to the Phalaborwa police station which he did. Osmers said that she remained in the vehicle until her son arrived. “I then made a case of assault against Mr Robertson at the police station (CAS239/1/2019) and it was only during this period that I noticed the warrant I was served with was for the wrong vehicle.” Once her son, Eugene, arrived along with Hazel Haynes, his friend, they were handed the warrant and Haynes entered the vehicle cab to
remove personal belongings. Haynes alleged that Dilibo then pushed her into the seat preventing her from moving. “I was stuck in the vehicle with the big guy pushing me against the seat, so a policeman came and removed him off me. We then went inside the station to lay assault charges against the deputy and the sheriff because of how they treated Sonet, and I also lay a charge because of what he did to me in the bakkie. At that moment Dilibo came into the charge office and held his hands up like a boxer and looked at me and said that perhaps he should do a proper job and then they can arrest him for assault. He then mock punched in my direction and I got such a fright! I couldn’t believe that he did this in front of the police officers!” explained Haynes. We contacted Robertson for comment but were referred to his legal representative, Anita Campbell, who also represents Dilibo. Campbell stated; “Unlike Osmers, her son Eugene Osmers and Haynes, our clients have no intention litigating by way of the media, be it printed or social media. The matter is sub judice and as such our client will not comment on the merits of the matter, save to state that the versions of Osmers and Haynes are, not surprisingly, extremely selective. Our clients deny any wrongdoing and at all times acted in their capacity as the Sheriff and deputy Sheriff, armed with an order from the High Court to be executed. Our clients opened cases against Sonet Osmers, Eugene Osmers and Hayzel Haynes for crimen injuria, defeating the ends of justice, assault and contravention of Section 107 of the Magistrates’ Courts Act in that they obstructed the Sherriff in the performance of his duties. Our clients trust that justice shall prevail in a Court of Law and not in the media” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Daar is steeds tyd om te registreer Die DA se Desireé van der Walt het hierdie week met Bulletin gesels oor die belangrikheid vir almal in die gemeenskap om te registreer vir die verkiesing. Dust settles over Phalaborwa Magnetite dust deposits from Palabora Copper Mine in Phalaborwa has been clogging up drains and swimming pool pumps in the residential areas since the start of the year. One resident, Mark Glanvill, noticed a black powder forming on the steps of his pool. Upon further investigation he discovered that the strange dust was in fact magnetite deposits blown into town from the large magnetite dumps on the mine. Using a magnet, Glanvill started collecting the dust and found deposits all over his yard, inside his home and layered inside his swimming pool pump. He photographed the deposits he collected, attached these to an email and sent it off to the Palabora Copper Mine in the hopes that they should react. “The dust gets in everywhere and I have submitted a claim to the mine to reimburse me for the damage to my swimming pool pump which became clogged by the dust. I showed them pictures of huge amounts of dust that I collected off my desk and countertops inside my home. My house is on the market and potential buyers have walked away because of the dust lying everywhere. I have still not re-
ceived an acceptable answer from the mine,” a frustrated Glanvill said. Bulletin contacted Lydia Radebe, communications head for Palabora Copper. According to her, the mine had received a number of complaints from residents in town and this has caused them to appoint a task team to investigate the matter. Upon their findings, a plan of action will be implemented to find an amicable solution to the problem. “After receiving some complaints about magnetite dust from the public, we put together a team of specialists to investigate the matter with the intention to devising amicable solu-
tions. Should the report confirm what is being said, then we will develop an action plan on how to resolve and mitigate the issues raised. This process will include informing, consultation and engagement with all stakeholders to ensure collective resolution and mutual understanding”. At the time of going to print it was not certain which steps the mine or environmental were going to take to stop further distribution of the toxic dust into the town. We have been promised an official media statement from Palabora Copper and will report upon receipt thereof. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Six dead after horror crash
Lepelle Truck
Six people were killed on the R71 road between Phalaborwa and Gravelotte in a horrific accident involving three vehicles. Details are still not clear as investigations are continuing, but preliminary findings suggest that the Range Rover was traveling from Phalaborwa in the direction of Gravelotte when it hit a light delivery vehicle head-on. The accident occurred on Monday evening at around 20:45. According to emergency services personnel, the LDV was a branded Lepelle Northern Water vehicle which was traveling in the direction of Phalaborwa from Gravelotte. It was behind a older model Toyota Carolla traveling in the same direction. The Range Rover apparently overtook a vehicle and in the process clipped the side of the Carolla before careening into the LDV behind it. The driver and assistant inside the truck were killed instantly and all four occupants of the Range Rover were flung out of the vehicle. They were all declared dead on the scene. The occupants of the Carolla escaped without a scratch. General Ngobeni, the SAPS Cluster commander rushed to the scene from Giyani to assist in the operation. At the time of going to print there have been no further statements and investigations are underway. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Mabuza, “we heard your cries” Pupils robbed at Nkowankowa stadium Hundreds of pupils who attended the annual school athletics meeting at the Nkowankowa stadium last Friday, returned home crying after they were robbed of money and valuables by a gang of criminals in broad daylight. The incidents seem to have been precipitated by lack of proper arrangements by the authorities as reportedly there were not enough emergency or security personnel present at the event. The children who were delivered to the stadium in mini-busses were to represent their schools in the games which take place at the local stadium each year in February. According to pupils who attended the event, everything went well until the competitions were completed. When the children went for lunch, they were accosted at various corners and robbed of their belongings. It is reported that the culprits started by demanding money and when it was not forthcoming, confiscated the valuables. Witnesses at the event said that their attempts to alert the security guards were in vain as the guards were outnumbered by the gangs who were also threatening them. Teachers were alerted of the problem but they could not act themselves. A child who could not be named said that there were no police vans on the
property or outside the stadium. The child said that when they reported the matter to the teachers they were promised that the police would be called and they would have to come and report the problem to teachers at their respective schools on Monday. “When we complained on Monday we were told that cell phones are not allowed at schools, we should not come along with them.” One of the teachers said that the schools could not be held liable if such incidents happened outside the stadium. She added that the matter is a hard shell to crack because in most of the schools cell phones are not allowed at school. “We normally do not allow pupils to use cell phones during school hours and the criminals probably seized that opportunity to rob the kids.” Nkowankowa Stadium is notorious for tragedies, especially when there are crowds. Due to crime committed in the vicinity of the stadium, an annual festival organised by the Munghana Lonene FM to celebrate traditional music, was last year shifted to Giyani. This after two people were found dead after the festival the previous year. Attempts to obtain comment from the police were not successful. — Jan Mafetsa jan@bulletin.us.com
African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President, David Mabuza has promised residents of Hlomela and Ndhindani villages in the Giyani area on Saturday that the tar road which they had long been promised will be implemented in a fort night. He said that during his visit to the area last week, after residents of Hlomela village complained that their road is in bad condition, he had come with the contractor to repair the road. Mabuza, who was accompanied by a member of the Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), Nkakareng Rakgoale and PEC members, was in the area two weeks ago as part of the campaign to urge people to register to vote in the coming elections. The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) Head of Communications, Witness Tiva, said on his Facebook profile that the visit by Mabuza was part of electioneering. Announcing the arrival of Mabuza in Mopani, Tiva said “Deputy President David Mabuza had arrived in Giyani to continue with his efforts to fast track service delivery in the area. Mabuza is accompanied by the Provincial Deputy Secretary, Basikopo Makamu and PEC members, Dickson Masemola and Nkakareng Rakgoale. The entourage will proceed to Ndhindane vil-

lage outside Giyani.” Addressing residents, Mabuza spoke in Siswati and said “last time when we were here residents complained about the road at Hlomela and Ndhindani. People said the Deputy President we want the road and today I have brought the contractor to tell them that the construction of the road will commence within fourteen days. We have heard the cries of the people.” This forms part of the ANC election drive aimed at wooing voters in view of the elections to take place in just two months’ time. The news though, was well accepted by the community. Others dismissed the sweet talk as part of electioneering aimed at fishing more voters to the ruling party. Fannie Lebea, in response said “it’s a joke. Why did they want to fast track service delivery on the brink of elections. They are just clowns, ask the people in rural areas, they have a story to tell.” —Jan Mafetsa jan@bulletin. us.com

Through berry tinted glasses Saturday morning, the beginning of the Berry Festival in Haenertsburg, started off cloudy with drizzle. By mid-morning the weather cleared and the festival saw hordes of tourists, many with dogs on leashes. Linda Miller, the festival organiser, had an impossible queue wanting to buy entrance tickets. Carl Henning from Tzaneen jumped in to help alleviate the queue. This was the mark of the festival with everyone helping whereever they could. The park was a hive of activity with food, wine, gin, vellies, clothing, crafts, accessories and live music. Johno Eagar from Jeffrey’s Bay showcased a range of vellies in different colours and sheepskin slippers. The Old Packhouse Distillery, based in Politsi, had its gin stall outside The Eatery. Mark Dando was behind the bar with his award-winning smile. Two gins, Crystal Gin and the citrus infused Valencia Gin, received gold medals at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards in 2017. Other gins were Mandarin, Moringa and Blueberry. The restaurants were chock-a-block full with The Red Plate serving the most blueberry dishes. There was bacon and blueberry French toast, grilled haloumi with blueberry compote, blueberry cheesecake with gooseberries and other berries, plus scones with blueberry jam. MAPS (Mountain Animal Protection Services) held a junk sale at Greenwoods Trading Post. Almost R1, 000.00 was made in two days. MAPS has begun a TNR programme for the village feral cats and André Du Plessis, MAPS Operations Manager, has almost completed another three cat traps. Last week, MAPS was notified of two stray dogs in Rissik Street. One was injured with a popped eye. MAPS Secretary, Bev Hartman, took both to Dr Larissa Odendaal at Serala Veterinary Surgery in Tzaneen. The injured dog had to have its eye removed. Both
will stay at Serala a few days and get treated for ticks and fleas. They will then move to Letaba SPCA. The owner has not yet come forward. The Village Hall was more subdued with two healing stalls. The one was Triogen Life and the other was the cannabis and moringa stall. Triogen Life encompasses ozone therapy, a company established in Cape Town in 1987. Ozone is the strongest form of oxygen. It helps for strokes, car accident victims, heart disease, cancer and allergies. The Triogen Life works through the lymph system and positive results are seen within five minutes. It is not only of use in a bath or shower but can also be used dry on a sofa. The set costs in excess of R20, 000.00. Jaco and Mariana Venter from Pretoria sold moringa and cannabis products. Jaco, a pastor, conducts wedding services while Mariana takes photographs. Jaco had testicular cancer in 1995 and as the cannabis route was not available at the time he went down the chemotherapy path. They sell cannabis ointment for aches and pains and arthritis. There are also two cannabis oil products - high CBD oil for pain or neurological issues; high THC oil for cancer. A Garden Cottage resident presented with cancer of the lymph area. In immense pain, she had consulted with Jaco the day before the festival. By Saturday she had unbearable pain in her

Granny’s Grumbles - Not always as they seem (Part 1)
In 1955 when I was 14 years of age our family prepared for our first ever holiday to Durban. It had taken months of preparation and we were booked into a hotel in Umhlanga – this was obviously many years before the north coast became unaffordable for the hoi polloi. A week before we were due to leave my mother became ill. As the week progressed it became increasingly obvious that in spite of
an improvement – relatively speaking – she would not be able to make the 1700km trip. As is normal with kids, we all loved our mom but were upset that our holiday plans might be jeopardised by her badly timed sickness. A couple of days before what was to be our departure date it was decided that the holiday should go ahead but my mother would stay behind and a good friend would stay with her. As the oldest I was told of the plans – obviously I would have to help my dad with the younger children - a sister aged nine and twin brothers aged five and prior to leaving the most important thing for me to learn was how to plait my sister’s hair. As I have mentioned in a previous article I suffered from a dearth of hair, but my sister’s was not much better. My father refused to allow her hair to be cut, so I had a couple of quick lessons in trying to tie her hair into two small pigtails. The day arrived when we left – just as well my mother had been left behind because the Sebakwe River (near the Republic of Enkeldoorn) was in full flood. We were virtually camped there until the flood waters subsided which was nearly a full 24 hours. My father was decidedly irked but we kids had a pretty good time because hordes of holiday-mak-
ers were waiting to cross. We made plenty of friends with the other youngsters. Eventually we arrived in Umhlanga – booked into the hotel and our first seaside holiday began. My first day at the beach was great. I made friends with a teenager with a surf board and was taught how to catch the waves. My father eventually hired one for me for an hour. At the end of the day I begged him to hire one from the hotel for me to use the following day. It was a bit of a rigmarole – signed a paper agreeing to pay the full cost of the board if it was damaged or lost. The next morning I woke up at the crack of dawn – my father and siblings were all asleep so I decided to go down to the beach and try out my new surf board. The beach was practically deserted – one elderly man advised me to watch out for the undercurrent. I didn’t have the faintest idea what an undercurrent was but agreed and doggy-paddled with my board further and further from the beach. I must tell you right now that I was not a particularly good swimmer – my father had been a provincial swimmer – and my young sister showed great promise but I generally got around in the water with a sideways breaststroke and part doggy paddle. To be continued…

Blessings Ron

SPCA and Serala Animal Clinic join forces The team at Letaba SPCA have been working hard behind the scenes in the areas around Tzaneen to ensure that dogs and cats in the villages were spayed and neutered. During the earliest of Tuesday morning hours, Ellie Potgieter and her team accompanied the new vet in town, Dr Larissa Odendaal and her young locum to Mariveni village where they setup a field clinic and began spaying and neutering the pets who had no means of accessing decent veterinary services. Some of the state vets were assisting the team with rabies innoculations. During the time spent in the village, a cancerous growth was removed, a hernia repaired and so many owners educated on the care and feeding of their animals. A pan hysterectomy was also performed on a female to save her life as she was would have suffered an excruciatingly painful death attempting to give birth in the weeks to come. The female fox terrier in question had already birthed 12 gigantic pups and the procedure was thus deemed an emergency.
The owner of the little foxy came and collected her in a wheelbarrow so as to avoid her pet having to stumble all the way back home after the surgery. “The conditions that the team worked under were less than suitable, but the love and care shown by each of the team members remain in the hearts and minds of the owners who sought help for their pets. So much care for total strangers by the entire team sure does make this a good place to live! We are extremely proud of our little SPCA with the enormous capacity to care and give hope to so many,” said Tracey van den Dool of the Letaba SPCA. Van den Dool used the opportunity to speak to Bulletin about the plans for the future and how they intend on going about raising the funds to bring these plans to fruition. It is understood that there are still hundreds of books being stored at a warehouse on behalf of the Letaba SPCA and that they have until the end of February to find alternative storage space. The sales during the regular book sales have depleted the collection somewhat, but the remainder of these books will now have to be moved urgently.
After some discussion with various members within the business community, it was decided to look at renting a premises and establish a book shop and book exchange where the community can browse through the amazing collection at their own leisure. The income generated from the sales at this bookstore will be put towards the SPCA’s running costs and will drastically minimize the financial burden upon this non-profit organization and reduce their need for “blikkie skuds” at the shopping centres in town. “To aid in the cause, Far North Bulletin has pledged R1 000 per month towards the rental of a suitable premises and we urge every other business owner in Tzaneen and surroundings to club together with us. The average rental for a suitable shop is in the region of R5 000 per month. If we can get only four other businesses to hold our hand for this cause, that amount will be sorted, and Tzaneen will be a decent book shop richer,” said Joe Dreyer, editor of the Far North Bulletin. If anyone in Tzaneen is aware of a small to medium sized rental space available as soon as possible, or if there are any landlords willing to help the cause, please contact Tracey van der Dool on 083 968 0902. In the meantime the Letaba SPCA is hosting their very first fundraising Golf Day in the 15th of March at the

Prestige goud reën oor Buffelpark Die jaarlikse BB Motorgroep Prestige Atletiekbyeenkoms is verlede Vrydag deur die Hoërskool Ben Vorster in Tzaneen aangebied.

Over the weekends of January 26 and February 2, Canéll Jackson, one of Merensky High School’s top archers, didn’t rest on her laurels. At the Provincial Indoor Championship in Montana Park, Canéll shot a national qualifying score of 292 out of 300, with no less than 30 bulls. For this achievement, she received a gold medal in the JFBU category. In Thabazimbi, she participated in the South African National 3D Championship. Although the heat and long hours in the field took its toll, Canéll showed her mettle by shooting a personal best and a provincial qualifying score. Again she was rewarded with gold. Merensky Archery kicks off at the weekend of February 9 with the first 3Di Triple Crown Leg 1 at Magnum Archery in Gauteng.

Fotos: Joe Dreyer
