Friday evening was an intimate affair lined with emotion as the 90th anniversary of Joubert & May was celebrated in an appropriate manner - with champagne and fellowship of course. The law firm celebrated nine decades of service to the Tzaneen and surrounding community and made use of the opportunity to introduce its stylishly revamped office block which was saw the light of day at the start of the new year. Seen here are two of the partners, Aldo Rech and Desiré Lee Ernst exchanging a cordial embrace. For more, turn to page 5 inside. Photo: Joe Dreyer.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Schooling in the Tzaneen area was severely interrupted as teachers affiliated to the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) which is an affiliate of COSATU did not turn up for work this week. They were bussed to Thohoyandou in Vhembe to protest about the rampant loss of jobs through retrenchments. The march was set to instruct the ANC that members of the party who were implicated in various corrupt activities and made their way into the listing conference should be removed from the list. The federation was expected to also send a message to their counterparts in the alliance that corruption in government should be brought to an end. At Khujwana village which falls under the Khujwana circuit of the department of basic education at Mopani, children went to school as usual and upon arrival at their classrooms found no teachers but the headmaster who instructed
Scores of patients using the Khujwana clinic had expressed dismay at the slow service delivery they endure at the hands of public workers at the facility. A visit to the centre last week by this reporter confirmed the concerns of the residents. The reception was packed to capacity with no movement to show that there were people who were busy assisting patients and minimizing the que which was extending to the outside of the building. Patients said that Khujwana is the worst centre compared to the other centres they consulted in terms of service delivery. It is said that most patients resort to the municipal clinic in Tzaneen. Mankoana Mhlarhi from the Ntwanano section said that she had been waiting to be attended to by the nurses since early that morning. “I arrived at the clinic at 06:00 but I was only attended to at 16:00. It was when other nurses were packing their bags to go home at the change of shift that one nurse noticed me and came over to assist. During lunch, the nurses left at 13:00 and returned only after three. Surely they acted as if nothing was wrong with the long que.” The patient said she was at the clinic to collect her chronic medication. She
appealed to authorities to attend to the problem warning that if it could continue, many lives will be lost at this institution. She added that people start queuing at the clinic from as early as 05:00 but they would spend the whole day at the clinic until it is knock off time for the nurses. It was not the first time the clinic made the headlines for the wrong reasons as last year it was also in the news after a patient collapsed while waiting for service. People complained then that the collapse of a patient was motivated by the fact that nurses do not take the “eiht batho pele” service principles serious. Khujwana clinic does not operate for 24 hours due to lack of resources such as security personnel. At Lephepane village residents are planning to take to the streets after the clinic they were promised would be built for them had not yet been completed. Clinic committee member Mpapa Rakgoale said the community are still awaiting for the department to build a clinic for them after they were promised by MEC Phophi Ramathuba in her visit to the area. He said preparations are at an advanced stage to hold a protest over lack of a clinic in the area. — Jan Mafetsa
boost
The Early Childhood Development (ECD) division of the Department of Health and Social Welfare will receive a boost after funds usually allocated to the division, will be increased and migrated from that department into the Department of Basic Education (DEBE). This was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) last week. Ramaphosa further said that from next year, the starting year for the ECD programmes will be two years which means they will have to be at the centres for two years before they go to school. “This is not a pipe dream but that preparations are at an advanced stage to implement the programme. There will also be funds for the programme which is aimed at developing education from an early age.” The President further said that Education needs to be prioritised as well as the development of skills within the youth. He stated that so far, links had been introduced with the introduction of the five year period to absorb all the needy students whose parents would not be able to afford payment at tertiary institutions. According to him, the government is appealing to the Students Representative Councils (SRC) and institutions to work together for solutions. — Jan Mafetsa

them to return home. At Ritavi and Bombeleni Primary Schools in the Nkowankowa circuit, children were turned back on the excuse of load shedding. Attempts to reach the office of COSATU in the province by the time of going to press were fruitless. In a statement the South African Communist Party (SACP) said that they support the protest and the overall struggle to halt retrenchment across the country. The organisation said that it pledges its solidarity with workers against retrenchments. “The SACP further agrees with COSATU that fighting retrenchments at the work place level is not sufficient and the economy-wide strategy to halt retrenchments is therefore necessary over and above work place level struggles. The unemployment rate of 38 percent (9,8 million South Africans) requires economy-wide intervention,” said the party. — Jan Mafetsa

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Hoe moet ‘n mens dan so voortgaan hier!? Nee man, ek is oppad Zambië toe, geen mens kan so leef nie.”
— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

hierdie geliefde kunstenaar op by Hoërskool Merensky in Die Byekorf. Kaartjies is beskikbaar by itickets.co.za of by die skool se Mbank. Village snare matters discussed The Haenertsburg/Magoebaskloof area is broken up into several sectors with each sector holding regular meetings about matters affecting the community. Sector 2, chaired by Patrick Bremner, held its meeting in the village hall this week. Of grave concern is the fact that there were 14 accidents in one month on the R71 down Magoebaskloof. A meeting has been scheduled with SANRAL, the MEC of Limpopo and the GTM to find solutions. Guest speaker, Ellie Potgieter from the Letaba SPCA spoke about the organisation’s cooperation with MAPS pertaining to the feral cats in the village. MAPS traps the cats and the SPCA makes the call as to whether the animal is returned to the colony or not. Cats are test-
ed for feline AIDS and leukemia. If positive the cats are euthanased. If healthy the females are spayed and the males go through a vasectomy and are returned to the colony. Ellie asked the community to hand in snares to the SPCA. All snares have markings on them to identify the owner of the snares. In this way the SPCA can trace the owner of the snares. The SPCA has found many snare criminals in this way and the snares plus dead animals are usually found up in the ceilings of their homes. As the area is rich with wildlife, Ellie appealed to the locals not to go near injured wildlife as they can be dangerous when injured. She said that people should rather contact the SPCA who will handle the matter together with the correct authorities.

Granny’s Grumbles - Not always as they seem (Part 2)
I had reached a depth where I could no longer feel the sand under my feet and I suddenly realised what an undercurrent was because it started pulling me sideways. I found it impossible to get onto the board and didn’t dare let it go bearing in mind that my father had virtually signed a contract agreeing to pay the full cost should his errant daughter lose or damage it. I was struggling to hold the board to try to get towards the beach and was having no luck at all. Suddenly I heard a voice shouting “Help me – Help me”. A short way away a man seemed to be struggling frantically and his head kept disappearing under the waves. I managed to get relatively close to him and told him to hold the surfboard, which he grabbed and thanked me profusely. Aha! I suddenly saw a way out of my predicament – offer him the surfboard whilst I tried to get
back to shore and get help. He accepted the offer gratefully and I spent the next twenty or thirty minutes trying desperately to get back to the beach. I was eventually assisted by an enormous wave which dumped me rather heavily but fortunately close to two lifesavers who had only just arrived. I pointed in the general direction and waited anxiously to see if they would return with the expensive surfboard which was top of my priority list at that moment. A few minutes later they hauled the semi-conscious swimmer on to the beach and started CPR. No sign of the board. I asked the one lifesaver if he knew what had happened to it and got a filthy look while he explained that saving someone’s life was a lot more important than a bloody surfboard. A lady who had heard the conversation and saw my distraught look suggested that I just walk up and down the beach – it was sure to be washed up. It was, but with a large gash caused by the rocks that it hit on the way back. I walked slowly back to the room holding the surfboard with gash not showing and put it on the balcony. I did not think it advisable to tell my father about my escapade since he appeared annoyed by the fact that I had disappeared without informing him so kept quiet. When we went to the beach after breakfast I let the family think that I had had enough of the water and a suntan would be a good way to spend a couple of hours. In those days every hotel served morning tea at 10.30 on the veranda – practically every resident would be there waiting for the gorgeous cream cakes that were brought around on a trolley and we were no exception. Whilst tucking into things we only dreamed of under normal circumstances I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder and
looked up into the eyes of the man who had been rescued earlier that morning. He used the word “heroine” umpteen times and then turned to my father and asked him if he was not the proudest man on the planet with a daughter like me. Since my father didn’t have the faintest idea what he was talking about he looked bemused and the man launched into a story which made me sound like Grace Darling in action. Thinking little of my own safety I had insisted that he have the surfboard which saved his life while I struck out for the shore and called the lifesavers. He would be forever in my debt. I strongly suspect that the man concerned was either an actor or in some way connected to the theatre because he made sure that the entire veranda heard everything.. My father was stunned – whether it was because of the fact that I had not mentioned it or because he knew that I was not a good swimmer I am not sure, but anyway since even the manager congratulated him on his amazing daughter he did not delve too deeply into what had actually happened. I took the surfboard back to the desk that afternoon and explained the damage. I was told that I could have a free surfboard for the rest of the holiday but I demurred – I had seen people bodysurfing and I thought it would be safer doing it that way. The rescued man spent another three days at the hotel and inundated me and my siblings with chocolates, sweets and cold drinks. On the same day that he left my father realised that having to plait my younger sister’s hair three times a days was a bit much and agreed that she should have it cut. I never mentioned to anybody that all I had been doing was trying to get rid of the surfboard which was hindering me and the drowning man was what actually saved me!! I had a great holiday!

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church BLESSINGS. Environmental Stewardship.
Genesis 1 v 29; Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ Here we have definite proof that we are responsible for all the earth and its produce, yet time and time again we fail in looking after these precious resources. We waste indiscriminately. It is so easy just to drop a paper or two in the street or flick a cigarette butt out of the window. Yes, maybe someone else may pick it up. We shout and scream at those in authority if our town looks like a pig-sty, but what are we doing to prevent it happening? We read about global warming and pollution of the seas and tend to blame others for it happening yet we are also partly responsible for this. Do you recycle your waste? In Matthew 21: 33-45 we read about the parable of the tenants and see how greed affects the outcome, self-interest is paramount, it is all about “me”. In v 43 Jesus warns about the consequences of waste, “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit” I wonder often am I doing enough to spread Jesus’ love to my fellow citizens of this earth. Am I also wasting the talents that God gave me as He gives us all? Am I a true environment steward looking after God’s precious gifts to us here on earth or am I one who sits back and expects others to do the job? I can do my part, no matter how small it might look to others. Life is too short to waste a second. What will we do when we stand before God at judgement day and He asks us “What did you do to protect my gifts to you? Did you do your part?” So I plead with you all do your part in protecting the earth by being more conscious of your surroundings, re-cycle where you can, plant a garden or a tree, rebuild what has been destroyed by others of greed.

Red can cause failure on exams. Seeing “even a hint of red” on an exam can affect a test-taker’s performance. Perhaps because instructors often use red ink to mark errors, people associate the colour “with mistakes and failures.

A Harty good move upwards
Caitlin Harty
With her blue eyes, dimples and lovely figure, Caitlin Harty (24) is set to follow her dream to go to Los Angeles in the USA. Caitlin grew up in the Haenertsburg area, living at Clearwaters Cove, and went to Stanford Lake College. At school she obtained full academic colours and was awarded the Zack Schuur overall culture trophy. Caitlin then obtained her BA in Dramatic Arts at the University of Pretoria. Her first debut in the acting world was playing Mowgli at her Montessori School. Acting, modelling and fashion have always been her passion and her parents have fully supported her in following her dream. In her acting career she was in “Seepglad”, an Afrikaans TV show that aired on KykNet. Caitlin played a young love interest that caused chaos amongst the community. She also acted in “6-Headed Shark Attack”, an epic feature film that aired in the USA on the SyFy channel that had fans of the genre obsessed. Caitlin played the owner of the retreat where
the attacks happen where she tries to escape the island. In “Autumn”, Caitlin played a young girl struggling with her mom suffering from cancer. She also has three other short films on the Film Festival circuit which received official selection. Her modelling projects were for the Daniel Klein watch company that made her the face with her billboards all over South Africa, while the campaign went international with Caitlin in stores and magazines all over the world. She modelled for major campaigns for Sun City and The Maslow hotel. For Sorbet, Caitlin was the face for the Brazilian hairstyle at the Sorbet drybar all over the South African stores. She took part in Miss Grand South Africa that was aired nationally on Zee World and she won and represented South Africa at Miss Grand International in Las Vegas that was aired internationally. Caitlin has won many pageants over the years. The last one she competed in was Miss Supranational aired on Glow TV in South Africa. Caitlin has 7000 followers on Instagram which is her main marketing tool for all three disciplines. She’s travelled all over Europe, been to Bali and has visited the USA three times. She lived in Los Angeles in the USA for a year where she studied at the NY Film Academy. She’s also com-
pleted an online fashion styling course. Caitlin made many friends in LA and felt that she fitted in amongst these creative, tenacious and driven people. In her spare time, Caitlin loves watching movies and “Pretty Woman” is her all time favourite. She’s a casual dresser, loves mixing outfits and goes for budget friendly fashion. She prefers wearing her hair long as it’s easy to style. When asked what a woman’s best asset is, she replied “her smile.”
Top: Already a well known face, Caitlin has her sights set on the USA. Bottom: Representing South Africa at Miss Grand International in Las Vegas.

Beyond Burger is here The recently opened Magoebaskloof Farmstall, opposite Warriors, is the first to introduce the Beyond Burger to the Limpopo Province. Canadian-born Angie and her husband Harry Paterson ordered 40 Beyond Burgers over the Berry Festival and were sold out. Africa’s plant-based protein products leader, Infinite Foods launched the Beyond Burger in South Africa recently. Beyond Burger is the flagship product of Los Angeles-based Beyond Meat, and it looks, cooks and tastes just like beef yet it is made from nothing but plants and also has no added hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, soy or gluten. main ingredients: water, pea protein isolate, canola oil, and refined coconut oil. These provide the protein, heft, and moisture/juiciness of the burger. Plus, they contain minimal amounts of other ingredients, like potato starch, natural flavor, yeast extract, and beet juice extract. Seated inside, customers can smell the fresh aroma of coffee. Outside, seating is under shady old trees with a view of the forest and Liz McGaffin’s nursery. Betsy the kid goat has free rein and might well prance onto your table. The menu is all vegan and the coffee is delicious. An added attraction is access to wi-fi. Kimon Neophyte with his signature on the Pennefather wall of writers.
It is with deep sadness that Haenertsburg was informed of the death of writer Kimon Neophyte (64). Kimon had a stent inserted in his heart in Johannesburg on Thursday and died during the procedure. Over the years Kimon wrote numerous books and had three book launches at the Pennefather for his works entitled ‘Torn’, ‘Displaced’ and ‘Tolstoy’s Passion’. Based in Johannesburg, Kimon returned regularly to the village where he also kept a home. Condolences go to his wife Jacky and family.
HRRA comes back to life The Haenertsburg Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA) was resurrected at a meeting, chaired by Keith Patrick, in the village hall on Thursday evening. The new committee members are Patricia Baragwanath, Stefan Kohne, Henry Harman, Duncan Barry, Elsie Breugen, Beth Render and Lana Quinn. HRRA started in the mid 1990’s and was chaired by Mike Gardner. HRRA focused exclusively on village matters such as the cemetery, roads, village hall and the post office. The committee, at that time, saw to keeping the village functioning properly on every level. HRRA stopped its activities over a year ago
to the detriment of the village. Times have changed with the advent of major water and electricity issues plus an influx of tourists. HRRA will be seeking closer cooperation with the GTM on essential services issues. HRRA now also sees the need to realign HRRA and to embrace the small holdings in the area that fall under Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch (HNW). A socio economic study of the village and surrounding areas could lay a foundation for the way forward. The constitution was unanimously adopted as well as an annual subscription fee of R50.00 per household.

When the going gets tough
Victory Mathebula, Una Radzuma, Palesa Shiluvane, Charlize Krause, Nyasha Patel, Katelyn Kurten & Keightly Mabasa.
Seven learners from Merensky High School, who have already enrolled for the Silver level of the President’s Award Programme, completed 48km over rough terrain in the Magoebaskloof area. Over the weekend of 8, 9 and 10 February, Keightly Mabasa, Katelyn Kurten, Victory Mathebula, Nyasha Patel, Charlize Krause, Palesa Shiluvane and Una Radzuma proved that the saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going!”, is absolutely true.
Wet conditions, fallen trees and washed away bridges turned the weekend into a bundu-bashing adventure. The hikers started off at Broederstroomdrift and spent the first night at De Hoek Hut. On Saturday they hiked to a misty Woodbush Hut and on Sunday the hike was completed at De Hoek Hut again. This hike is one of the requirements for the sought after silver certificate of the international President’s Award Programme.
