Pastor Tapiwa Jenje from Thabazimbi has been arrested and has appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate Court on Monday the 24th of June. He allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl at an area outside Thabazimbi on Monday the 17th of June. The suspect was denied bail and will appear again in the same court on the 27th of June for bail application. Meanwhile police investigations are still continuing. The arrest follows an incident where he allegedly arrived at the victim’s house for a prayer session. He apparently told the victim’s mother that the girl was ill. He allegedly claimed the girl should go with him to the nearest river so that she can receive healing. The mother later started panicking when the pastor did not return with her daughter. She then informed the father who went to go look for his daughter. The father found the child half-naked, running and screaming for help. The frightened girl then alleged the pastor have raped her. The Police were immediately notified where a rape case was opened. The suspect was subsequently arrested soon after. Police investigations are still continuing.
The most prestigious annual event on the Haenertsburg Rotary calendar is the induction of the new president. This year outgoing president Charl Naudé handed over the reins to Anne Harman. Anne, who has been involved in education most of her life, briefly introduced her plan for her term of office. She will concentrate on a menstruation roll-out programme for school-going children. The concept, developed by an American, will open up employment and is a product that’s kind to the earth. More on this concept will be revealed once it’s in full swing and being distributed to schools. The induction was a glittering, formal affair at the Haenertsburg Village Hall with a three course meal, from the Red Plate restaurant. The occasion also acknowledged the achievements Rotarians have made together and individually, in the past year. This includes a new route for the Iron Crown run, the successes of Ebenezer Mile, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for seniors, the art exhibition at Mountain Café and the contribution towards the Mozambique Relief Fund. With attention to detail and patience Rotarian Peter Stuart-Thompson secured two global
grants of R1-million. Thus funding was obtained for local soccer, for Thusanang’s ECD training project and the construction of ECD schools in Limpopo rural areas. Rotarian Keith Patrick secured 110 wheelchairs from the UK. Outgoing President Charl Naudé said that Rotary has changed because the world has changed. The current Rotarians are of an age and wisdom to pass on the reins to Rotary Haenertsburg Satellite Club. This younger generation, the millennials, includes Ruan Viljoen, Renske Hagg, Rowena Viljoen and Francois van Schalkwyk.

Over 800 suspects arrested Hitchhiker during “New Dawn” operation robbed on R71
■ Jeff Jackson A 46-year old male who was hitchhiking on the R71-road near the Sasol filling station near Phalaborwa was picked up by two occupants in a silver vehicle. The two occupants who gave him a lift then drove to a farm in the area. According to the hitchhiker the occupants of the silver vehicle did stop at a farm where he was held at gun point. The victim was then robbed of his laptop, charger for the laptop, two cellphones and his FNB bank card.
Shop owner held up ■
Jeff Jackson
On Saturday 22nd of June at about 19:40 three African males went to a 30-year old Ethiopian’s shop at Marironi. According to the shop owner, the three males said they wanted to purchased maize meal where he opened the door for them. According to the shop owner the three suspects then grabbed him where one of them held a knife to his throat. The police said the shop owner stated that one of the three males then switched off the light. The three suspects then took Vodacom and Cell C airtime vouchers worth R1400, cigarettes worth R1255, a Samsung and two Nokia cellphones and a black jacket. The suspects then took the key and locked him inside the shop and left, according to the police.

■ Jeff Jackson The South African Police Service in Limpopo arrested 866 suspects between the ages of 19 and 51 years for various offences in an effort to deal with various crimes throughout this province. The arrests were made during the “New Dawn” operation from the 17th of June until the 25th of June which covered all the various clusters of the Limpopo. The operation consisted out of various SAPS crime units ranging crime intelligence, crime prevention, detectives, public order police unit, K9unit and the Tactical Response Team (TRT). These simultaneous operations were aimed at stabilizing and normalizing the crime infested areas, through roadblocks, stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects and raiding of unlicensed businesses including liquor outlets. The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, business and house robbery, armed robbery, burglary at res-
Stand van Damme Dam Levels
idential and business areas, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of drugs and suspected stolen properties, contravention of the Immigration Act, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating unlicensed liquor outlets. During these operations, the SAPS reportedly also issued 1001 traffic fines, closed eight shebeens and confiscated five cars, suspected stolen computers, 27 knives, ten firearms, cash, television sets, cellphones and drugs amongst others. The origin of the recovered firearms and other items will be determined through ongoing police investigations according to the SAPS. The suspects arrested during this operation will appear before various magistrate courts around Limpopo. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has commended the SAPS men and women who participated in these operations for an excellent job.

Woodley-family come under attack again ■
Joe Dreyer
The Woodley’s have suffered another attack on their home outside Letsitele. This was the fifth home invasion in twenty years – the second in just a week. The police have made no arrests and at the time of going to print it was reported that no police unit had been to the property to lift fingerprints or question the victims. Thankfully this time around neither, Ian Woodley (56), his mother Suzanne (79) nor his father Sonny (89) had been at home. They were living at friends’ house temporarily while a group of local farmers and neighbours from the area were repairing the damage to their home and upgrading and installing security systems around the property. Burglars had ransacked the home most likely over the weekend. “My mother and I had decided to go up to our home on Monday morning to check on the progress and do some laundry and a few other things around the house,” Ian explained. “When we reached the front door we could see that someone had forced their way inside. We now literally have nothing left for these terrorists to take.” Two weeks ago we reported on the night that a group of four men gained access to the house while the Woodley’s were in bed. It was by chance that Ian awoke at the sound of shattering glass and rushed his parents to the bathroom. He fought off the intruders with a kitchen knife and a bookcase as a barricade. In this instance there have been no updates from the police investigators on the progress of the investigations. No arrests have been made and no assistance or assurance was offered. The same story was told by this newspaper last year in the case of Ben Pretorius and his farm on Mapietskop just outside Tzaneen (on the hill with
the giant lit cross). This property was ransacked nine times in just eight months. To the reasonably observant person it is clear that the farm was targeted. Pretorius personally pointed out a number of suspects he believed could be responsible for the home invasions to the police. One of the suspects was the watchman in a lookout tower overlooking the Pretorius property. To date, the police have yielded no clues and no arrests have been made. Pretorius in the meantime left the farm and is now working in Zambia. “I just couldn’t take it any longer. I lost my tenants after they were burgled and robbed of everything they owned, twice in just a week. Has the police offered me any feedback? Nothing.” Is there a syndicate operating in the area? By all accounts, most likely not because neither the Woodley’s nor Pretorius or his tenants had anything of enough value for a syndicate to target them repeatedly and with such intensity. “Is the police in Tzaneen incapable of thoroughly investigating crimes or do they just not care because the victims of these crimes are white?” asked one of the victims of one of the robberies. “When three black doctors were assaulted and robbed in their homes, the Minister of Police himself arrived with great pomp and ceremony and even offered a reward for the apprehension of those responsible.” We have asked the national spokesperson for the Police, Col Moatshe Ngoepe for feedback on these cases but at the time of going to print we had received only the response “we have to find the dockets in order to investigate the inquiry and then answer your questions. This takes time so please be patient with us.” Nine home invasions in eight months. Three home invasions at the same property just this year alone. How much more patient should our people be?

Aqua-gunman still free
“We are still investigating” – SAPS
■
Joe Dreyer
Shockingly it is still not clear whether the gunman who opened fire on the sheriff and security officers in Aqua Park last month, has been arrested. The police are refusing to elaborate on the matter stating that it is under investigation. In a discussion with the provincial spokesperson for the SAPS in Limpopo, Col Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday (Wednesday) this journalist was accused of “having a problem” with accepting the information that is being fed to us regarding the case. This despite numerous attempts since the 31st of March to obtain clarity on whether he has been taken into custody after discharging his weapon four times in a residential area and threatening the sheriff. The entire incident was caught on camera, including footage of the suspect exiting his yard after having fired four shots at the sheriff and his crew, and pointing his firearm at the security officers in the middle of the street while a police officer stands next to him. Again, we asked Ngoepe on Tuesday whether the suspect had been arrested and he responded by saying “yes he has been arrested”. The following morning, Wednesday (yesterday) we asked when the suspect was arrested, on which of the charges against him he was arrested and whether he was in custody. Ngoepe’s official response to a Bulletin inquiry over WhatsApp on Wednesday (yesterday) morning is quoted here verbatim and was as follows: “The police in Tzaneen are investigating a case of pointing of firearm. It is alleged that 28-05-2019 at about 12:16 the complainant received a call from his wife [sic] they were people inside the yard towing his motor vehicle and when she tried to talk to them, they keep quiet. The husband arrived and found them busy towing his motor vehicle. When he ask them on one answered. He asked the driver to offload the car and he refused. The complainant allegedly slapped one of them. One of this people took out a firearm pointed at him. The complainant
ran to his house took his firearm and shot two warning shots and they ran away. No arrest yet. The case was referred to the NPA for decision.” This journalist questioned the content of the information. This prompted a phone call from Col Ngoepe. “I cannot elaborate on whether the suspect has or has not been arrested as this is part of our investigations. I think you were confused about my previous response when I said he has been arrested as you must have asked me about another case,” Ngoepe said. “Whether or not the information is false will only be decided in court.” When asked why the suspect had not been arrested and when he will be appearing in court, Ngoepe stated “I will no longer entertain your inquiry on this matter. I have given you the information that you requested, are we together?” Following the shooting in Aquapark on the 28th of May this year, three cases were opened against the suspect. Tzaneen CAS332/5/2019 Pointing of Firearm, Tzaneen CAS334/5/2019 Contempt of Court and Tzaneen CAS333/5/2019 Attempted Murder. The inconsistency and absolute duality of this matter is highlighted when one takes into account the case of Denouvan Kock (27) of Gelvandale who was sentenced to four years in prison for the discharging of a firearm in a residential area during an incident in July 2018. Furthermore the South African Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 clearly stipulates in terms of Section 120(3)(b), it is an offence to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm or an airgun in a “manner likely to injure or endanger the safety or property of any person or with reckless disregard for the safety or property of any person” and the Act further elaborates in Section 120(7) by providing that it is an offence to do so “in a built-up area or any public place, without good reason to do so.” The Act is silent in its definition of what qualifies as “good reason.” Ngoepe stated that he would provide further information on the case after the NPA had completed their investigations and ruled on the matter.

Three years on and still Present
■ Joe Dreyer “How perfect can a toasted sandwich and a cup of piping hot cappuccino really be?” we asked three years ago at the launch of Tzaneen’s most petite coffee shop and arts and crafts haven. It is hard to believe that two years on, Chantelle de Carvalho and her team have been filling the bellies of the hungry corporates at lunch time, daily without fail and with the same level of delicious professionalism they promised at the onset. Consistency is key after all. Past 2 Present Creations is the embodiment of the adage “what you see is what you get” as the décor says what the name alone cannot. Crafts for the creatives, antiques for the collectors and a scrumptious light-lunch menu for the hungry. The service is friendly and the menu nothing short of surprisingly delectable. The shop primarily caters for the crafty, but has an impressive range of collectable antiques such as furniture, cabinets and sculptures for those who appreciate the quality workmanship of the past, with a touch of the present flair for good measure. Not only have they been dispelling the hunger pains of the body, but through their weekly Annie Sloan creative classes, this team has been feeding the souls of a group
of creative originals too. Through these classes the avid crafters and the pieces they transform, are taught various techniques used to turn a humble pine chest into a truly magnificent centrepiece for any room. Being an accredited stockist of the Annie Sloan exclusive range of paints offers the added benefit of transforming the mundane into the truly fabulous – at your own pace and in exactly the fashion you specifically seek. Chantelle’s highly proficient right-hand, Bella ensures the operational success of the business remains as far removed from average as the past is from the present. Added to this is the support Chantelle enjoys from her highly respected retailer husband, Lino de Carvalho of the Sugarhill and Sugarloaf OK Mini-market stores. Lino and his team were awarded the prestigious OK Store of the Year award in 2017 during a red carpet event in Russia. This year, Sugarhill has once again been nominated for this very same award. Go on and treat yourself with a walk through the Past to the Present and have a bite while you’re at it. Or order from the comfort of your office - they do take aways and deliveries too! Oh, and remember, it’s in Windsor Street next to the gym. You’re welcome.

The Message
Granny’s Grumbles - EMBRRASSING MEMORIES
At the tender age of sixteen I worked for a fairly large company that employed many mechanics and thus they also had a fair amount of apprentices. I had long yearned to be invited out by one tall and rather handsome young man named Mike who was extremly shy. Don’t know how many ex-Rhodesians will remember the Hollandia Bakery? Well the bakery had a cyclist who had a small enclosed van which would arrive at the company’s tea time almost every day. The van was filled with cream horns, Danish pastries, chocolate eclairs and apple tarts and virtually the entire company would be gathered to support him.
One day Mike offered to pay for my cake which I thought was a clear indication that he was at least slightly interested in me since apprentices earned virtually nothing. A few weeks later he asked if we should meet at the Royal Agricultural show and see all the sights together – he was working on the Saturday morning so could not pick me up but we made arrangements to meet at the Cold Storage Commission stand at 4 o’clock. This was the sixties and none of this jeans and a tee shirt nonsense in those days – we dressed to the nines for virtually any occasion. Since it was Saturday – and the last day of the show which had opened on Wednesday the Cold Storage Commission was dishing out free (new on the market} red-skinned Vienna sausages and Colcom pork pies. I strongly suspect that these were the same pies and sausages which had been lying around in huge arrangements since the start of the show. However teenagers want to live in the moment and rarely think of things like that so Mike and I happily queued on three separate occasions to get our portion of pie and sausages. We met some acquaintances who told us that the Luna Park was in operation on the outskirts of the showgrounds so decided to all go there. After partaking of candy floss and ice creams we were all enjoying the attractions of the show and I suggested a ride on the octopus. Mike demurred saying he was feeling a bit queasy. “Don’t be a wimp” said his friend which was music to my ears since I was still hoping that
he would either put his arms around me or show some indication of having eventually found the girl of his dreams. The octopus had not even made its third swoop when I heard a muffled sound and I was enveloped in something hot and sticky. It took some time to realise that the man of my dreams had thrown up all over me. I was mortified. The octopus eventually came to a shuddering halt and I exited whilst trying to maintain some evidence of composure. Judging by the looks and titters I was not the only recipient of Mike’s vomitus and all I could think of was a hasty escape to the car park. Poor Mike of course had to take me home since I had arrived by bus and there was a deathly hush in between his embarrassed apologies. When I arrived home I could hardly wait to tell my mother how I had just endured the most horrifying evening of my life – this was of course after I had removed all my stinky clothes. My mother, who always called a spade a spade felt sorrier for Mike than for her darling daughter and the fact that my stomach erupted like Mount Vesuvius throughout the night, was also no help. Obviously the pork pies and Vienna’s had been more than a little off and I spent the following day in bed nursing my pride and a very sore stomach. I returned to work on Monday and avoided Mike which was relatively easy since he was obviously avoiding me as well. In retrospect I realised that Mike must have felt dreadful and his friend who had called him a wimp felt even worse. It took my heart and my wounded pride quite some time to heal but I did eventually renew a friendship with Mike albeit a non-romantic one.

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit I greet you. One of the youth in our church asked me to send him five reasons as to why young people either leave the church or don’t attend at all? Now this is a question that we in the leadership have been battling with for a long time, but to be asked by a young person was really a challenge. After a period of prayer I came up with these reasons: 1. Certain churches/priests fail to include the youth in the service. 2. No Bible study groups for youth (only) 3. Lack of interest of the youth to get involved in church activities. 4. School activities during weekends 5. How the youth is perceived by the community. We in the leadership are often too involved in our own cocoons, to see the potential of others, let alone the youth. What if they make a mistake? However, some churches do this and have reaped the success of having the youth involved. Some only have special services for the youth and do not include them in the everyday services. We often do not recognise the potential we have sitting right there in our churches because we have become so involved or perhaps indoctrinated as to the fact that only the priest has the sole right to preform services. The youth often follow the example set by the family of the church, you and me, are we doing our part? Are we working to our fully potential in the church, do we set the example of being involved in our church? Or are we just “bench-warmers”, letting others do the things necessary for the growth of the church community? How many get-togethers do we attend, are we involved in Bible study groups, or attend courses offered by our particular church? Do we really know what is required from an “active Christian”? Unity in our Christian life is one of the most important part of being a Christian. We can only be part of any family if we are truly involved in it, putting aside our differences and getting alongside those who need us the most, our brothers and sisters in Christ. Blessings

No more rodent problem at Checkers ■ Joe Dreyer A customer at Checkers Lifestyle centre in Tzaneen was unpleasantly surprised earlier this month when she was met with a rat on the cookie shelf inside the store. According to the shopper, she was reaching for a packet of biscuits when a rat popped up and scurried off. She was perturbed enough to give Bulletin a call and complain about this. Not a day later another shopper contacted us to complain about two rats in the dogfood isle. This week we had a visit from a concerned gentleman who claimed that he was an employee of the store. According to him the rats posed a serious health risk and that management was made aware of the problem, but nothing had been done about it. Bulletin contacted Shoprite Checkers head office about the matter and we were immediately transferred to the Area Manager, Vincent Kotzee. As ex-
pected, Kotzee took the matter for the seriousness in which it was meant and travelled to Tzaneen to meet us at the store the following day (Tuesday this week). “We have had a problem with rodents and pests in the past at this very store. In fact this must have been around four years ago and was very serious. We could literally see the rats fleeing into the veld surrounding this shopping centre,” Kotzee recalled. “At that time we reacted progressively and with the necessary ferocity to solve the matter which was subsequently accomplished within a very short period of time. Since then we had not had any issues with pest control until now.” The Shoprite Checkers group employs the services of an international pest control and hygiene contractor which currently does not have a locally-based agent. Two teams were however present in the shop at the time of the meeting on Tuesday morning and
by the afternoon the assurance was given that the situation had been effectively controlled. “Our customers can now shop with peace of mind once again. We have managed the situation and we can assure everyone that there was not an infestation of any sorts and we have been given the green light from our pest control and hygiene teams. In future we would advise our patrons to inform the management immediately should a rodent or any other pest be spotted inside the store. We will then be able to deal with the matter timeously and even more effectively,” Kotzee stated. Rodents are not uncommon in the retail industry however and certainly more so in environments such as shopping centres where one would find fast food outlets and restaurants in the same centre. Though large retailers such as Shoprite Checkers follow stringent hygiene practices, it may happen that rodents find their way into the store from
outside the centre in search of food. At the time of going to print it was not clear where these specific rats spotted by the local shoppers had emanated from. Checkers in the Lifestyle centre is neighboured by three fast food chains and a restaurant as well as a major national fresh produce trader. Coupled to this is the fact that the rodents seem to have no natural predators controlling their population as the local feral cat population is now being fed daily by a concerned local group. One employee at the centre told us that on some mornings the feral cat population can be seen waiting at the receiving doors of the centre for their daily meal which is allegedly supplied by the specific organization on a daily basis. In the meantime, Checkers Lifestyle Centre is under new management with the appointment of Blondy Mathebula. Michelle Liversage has been transferred to the Phalaborwa branch.
Phalaborwa protected by new Watchmen ■ Joe Dreyer The civil rights group Afriforum established Neighbourhood Watch in Phalaborwa this past month. The newest addition to the Afriforum Neighbourhood Watch network is headed by Cobus Louw (Chairperson), Robin Amos (vice-Chairperson and Head of Operational Protfolio) and Maria Kruger (secretary). The Afriforum Neighbourhood Watch Phalaborwa was formed after the community expressed their need to become more actively involved in the prevention of crimes within their respective areas by binding together as a unit to assist local crime prevention agencies and the SAPS. It was officially launched on the 6th of June this year and already the group has shown some promising results. Through their intensive nightly patrols a number of criminals have been apprehended and potential crimes prevented through due diligence and outstanding proactive approaches to various suspect situations. In just their first two weeks of operation the group has been responsible for the arrests of several suspects and have made some great breakthroughs in curbing local crimes. On the 22nd of June the AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch patrol group came across an abandoned house on the corner of Marula and Vos streets. The patrol team inspected the property and noticed movement from within the house. The Phalaborwa SAPS were activated to the scene and a unit arrived shortly thereafter. What followed was the arrest of four suspects which included two males and two females. Through a search conducted by the patrol members assisting the SAPS officers, it was discovered that the abandoned house had been used as a narcotics den. The officers found and confiscated various substances from inside the house which included crystal meth (Tik), Methcathinone (Cat) and Cannabis (Marijuana). Further to this discovery the officers also found some stolen copper plumbing fittings, copper electrical wire, stolen cellular mobile devices and various tools used in crimes like burglaries. Also found alongside the burglary implements was Metomiel (Lannate) which is a sticky white powder with a sharp smell usually used to poison dogs. The substance was found premixed with bread and water to form a type of dough. One of the arrested suspects was found to be an Illegal immigrant from Pakistan who has been residing at the property illegally since 2017 when his visa expired. Two of the suspects are suspected to be
involved in numerous house burglaries in the area. “It is a great relief that this success was achieved in co-operation with SAPS Phalaborwa as this residence is right across from one of our largest primary schools in Phalaborwa,” said chairperson of Afriforum Phalaborwa, Cobus Louw. “We will continue to monitor the residence as we continue assisting SAPS in the fight against crime and it can under no circumstance be allowed that criminals and drugs be found so close to the children of our community.” Cas 172/06/2019 was registered and is currently under investigation. In another incident two of the AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch members spotted a pursuit in the CBD where a male suspect was being chased by members of the public. The members immediately assisted and SAPS Phalaborwa was contacted to dispatch a unit. The
suspect was apprehended and detained by members of the public under the watch of the Afriforum members until he was taken into custody by the SAPS. It later came to light that the suspect had been responsible for a number of thefts out of motor vehicles through the use of remote jamming. Cas 171/06/2019 was registered is currently under investigation. These and other successes are reported over social media on the Afriforum Buurtwag Phalaborwa Facebook page, as they happen. “The primary objective of the Afriforum Neighbourhood Watch is to assist the community and the local law enforcement in times of need or emergency. It is a vital part of the proactive approach to fighting crime,” said Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum’s provincial coordinator for community safety in Limpopo.

Vossie Winter krieket vol opwindings ■
Jonge

Mopani acknowledges young farmers ■ Bulletin Merensky High School received the award for the Top Producer Secondary School in Mopani District at the 2019 Young Aspirant of the Year Awards. This awards was presented by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, on 12th
of June in Lenyenye just outside Tzaneen. The event was graced by the precence of Mopani’s Departmental Management including the Director Harry Maboa. This department awarded the school with a certificate and a cash prize of R30 000. With this, Merensky High School proves to be one of the leading agriculture schools in Limpopo.
Tzn depends on agriculture ■ The Fairview Collection, Tzaneen, Limpopo The economy of Tzaneen depends largely on farming with a wide range of fruits, vegetables, animals and timber. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of the town Tzaneen, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured its development. It is in a fertile region with tropical and subtropical agriculture taking place in a 20,000 km² region. A wide range of tropical fruits and vegetables are produced in the Tzaneen area, notably citrus, mangoes, bananas, avocados, litchis, tomatoes, macadamia nuts and timber amongst others. Tzaneen produces about 40 percent of South Africa’s avocados, 40 percent of South Africa’s mangoes and 20 percent of South Africa’s bananas. Tzaneen also produces 90 percent of South Africa’s tomatoes through ZZ2. Other farms makes South Africa the world’s 40th largest tomato producer. Even though South Africa is ranked 40th in terms of tomato production, the ZZ2 farms themselves are the world’s biggest producer of tomatoes. Tzaneen is also the biggest producer of pine plantations in the Limpopo, accounting for more than 85 percent of Limpopo’s pine and blue gum production. The majority of Tzaneen’s tropical indigenous forests have been destroyed during the last 100 years in order to give way to pine, blue gum and other agricultural plantations. South Africa’s export of citrus averaged nearly 90 million cartons per annum. Limpopo yields more than a third of the country’s production, and the largest production area is Letsitele where semi-tropical conditions are ideal for the cultivation of this crop. One of the biggest tomato farming enterprises in the country with around 160 000 tons being produced annually is ZZ2 in Mooketsi which supplies
virtually all of the national fresh produce markets on a daily basis with its own fleet of trucks. It also supplies directly to selected supermarkets. The Tzaneen area produces over 40 percent of the country’s avocados. The largest avocado producer is Westfalia, where up to three million cases of export and local market cartons are packed every year. This company also produces avocado purée and avocado oil (50 percent of the worldwide demand for avocado oil). At the Westfalia nursery, over 100 000 avocado trees are produced annually for its own estates and for outside growers. Peppadew is the brand name of a range of pickles and sauces made from a particular variety of sweet-tasting peppers (Capsicum baccatum) that is processed and bottled using a secret recipe. The world’s leading pickle of a unique red capsicum, Peppadew International, situated in Nkowankowa, exports to 26 countries around the world. The South African macadamia industry has grown into a major world force, being the third-largest producer in the world today. Tzaneen is a major growing area and is also a major producer of mangoes for export and local markets, as well as for dried mango products, juicing and achar. Bananas are amongst the most important commercial subtropical fruits grown in South Africa. On average the gross annual value of production for bananas has been R1.2 billion. Letaba produces nearly ten percent of this total. Du Roi Laboratory in Letsitele produces over six million tissue-culture banana plants annually for sale to the Southern African market as well as to other African countries, Middle East and South and Central America. Exciting new cultivars produced in the Tzaneen area include the well-known Clemengold nectarines and the versatile Dragon fruit.
The agriculture learners who received the award on behalf of High School Merensky are Henro de Bruin, Merise Katzke (teacher), Michaela Elbrecht, Luandi Visagie, Nicky Smith and Stefan Corbett. Director Harry Maboa (red tie) is from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Photo: Supplied

Environmental and water authorisations received? It’s not the finish line just yet - Responsibilities around monitoring and reporting to the authorities ■
Louise Agenbag, Polygon Environmental Planning Receiving that much-anticipated letter of Environmental Authorisation (EA) or Water Use Licence (WUL) in your inbox feels like crossing the finish line after successfully completing a marathon. Checking off two of the most important points on the planning checklist for your new development, it can be tempting to just file these documents away safely and proceed with development in earnest. It’s not quite that simple, though. Yes, obtaining those authorisations is an enormous leap forward and usually enables you to get started on your project – unless there are other outstanding issues – but now your EA, WUL and other authorisation(s) need to be put to work and inform the way that your development is undertaken. Each authorisation will contain a number of conditions which need to be adhered to, and the consequences of failing to comply may be serious, including the issuing of a fine, instruction to correct / rehabilitate, or even withdrawal of authorisation by the authorities. One of the conditions will usually be that independent compliance monitoring must be done and regular reports submitted to the competent authority indicating the project’s level of compliance with the conditions of the authorisations as well as with the approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPR) which would have been submitted as part of your applications. In the case of an EA, an independent Environmental Control Officer (ECO) will usually need to
monitor compliance during the entire construction or development phase and report to the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LDEDET) on a six-monthly basis. (Some provincial authorities require monthly reporting.) During the operational phase of the activity, for as long as the EA remains valid, compliance must also be audited by an independent auditor at regular intervals and reported on to LDEDET. Furthermore, Section 54A(3) of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations (2014, as amended 2017) also requires that, where an EA issued prior to the 2014 EIA Regulations was still valid by 8 December 2014, compliance with the EMPR of that project must also be independently audited and the first report submitted to LDEDET by no later than 7 December 2019, and at least every 5 years after that for as long as the EA remains in effect. For WULs, monitoring and reporting requirements vary based on the type of water use – e.g. water ab-
straction, wastewater treatment or impedance of streamflow – as well as the scale thereof. It may also include specialised monitoring such as laboratory analysis of water samples to determine the presence and/or levels of certain elements, especially if the project poses a risk of contamination of water resources, for instance an onsite wastewater treatment system. If water is being abstracted, whether from a dam, river or borehole, the volumes being abstracted will usually also need to be measured and recorded. If you are abstracting water for irrigation, it is
important that you take heed of the “Regulations Requiring that the Taking of Water for Irrigation Purposes be Measured, Recorded and Reported” (Notice 131 of 2017), published by DWS in terms of the National Water Act. Polygon Environmental Planning in Tzaneen would be happy to advise on the monitoring requirements for your project in terms of environmental or water use authorisations that may be in place, and are well-placed to undertake the necessary monitoring, auditing and reporting to the competent authorities.

Spanspek sal nooit weer dieselfde wees nie! ■
AgriBulletin
■ Jeff Jackson The XCO MTB cycling season ended with a climatic final race in the Louis Trichardt area this past Saturday. It was the final championship leg of the Limpopo XCO Series. The first leg took place in April in Polokwane followed by a gruelling second leg at Summerplace Farm Stay in the Waterberg and a third in the mountainous home of the Badgers on the grounds of Stanford Lake College. A large contingent of cyclists from Tzaneen participated in the final race, achieving several podium finishes. The race was also the final decider for
who would take home Limpopo colours for the series and once again Tzaneen fared extremely well. Cross-Country (XC) cycling is the most common form of mountain biking and is defined by the terrain on which it is performed. XC courses consist of a mix of rough forest/bush paths, single-track, smooth dirt roads and even paved paths connecting other trails. Within Cross-Country cycling there are some racing disciplines, such as XCE (Cross-Country Eliminator), XCO (Cross-Country Olympic), XCM (Cross-Country Marathon), Gravity Downhill and Enduro racing.
