Follow up: Night Crawler still afoot ■ Joe Dreyer The infamous Night Crawler was spotted inside a residential premises in Second Ave on Saturday evening. A neighbour noticed the bare chested slender figure in the yard next door and immediately sounded the alarm over WhatsApp. A local security company who monitors the group, dispatched a response unit to the scene. The suspect had however fled before they arrived. That same evening he was spotted inside a residence in Park Street, but fled after the dogs kicked up a commotion and woke the inhabitants on the property. He was again spotted in Hospital Street but evaded capture. We have received surveillance footage from one of

the complexes in the area which clearly shows the face of the illusive cat burglar. He is an African male, possibly in his mid-thirties, of average height with a slender build and bald head. He always removes his shirt before entering a property and seems to know exactly where all the escape routes are and where all the cameras are mounted. A couple of the inhabitants of a retirement complex in the neighbourhood told Bulletin that the Night Crawler has been spotted inside their complex on a number of occasions and has stolen cell phones and handbags through the window of some of the cottages while the inhabitants were in another room. “We as the elderly really do not feel safe here anymore. We have seen this man in our homes and even

at our community hall in broad daylight and nothing has been done to try and capture him. How is it possible that a criminal is operating unperturbed in a suburban street right in front of the Tzaneen SAPS detective branch without being apprehended for more than two years? They know what he looks like and they know his hunting grounds, surely that should be enough to capture him?” The law prohibits newspapers from publishing photographs of suspected criminals and we can therefore not post one of the photographs of this suspect which we have in our possession. The video footage and photographs have been circulated by security officials in the area however, and regular patrols have now been scheduled in an effort to tighten the net around the Night Crawler.

Residents in the Arbor Park area have had no peace the last few weeks and it has nothing to do with the infamous Night Crawler or even rowdy neighbourhood dogs. A siren of as yet undiscovered origins has started wailing its Banshee song daily over the area which has caused quite the stir among the mostly retired inhabitants along First and Second Avenues. One of the home owners in Second Avenue has been driven to the brink of insanity by the daily chorus and has taken to documenting the precise time intervals of the alarm. Examining the timesheet, we found that the alarm keeps a very precise schedule – almost as though it has been programmed as such. For the first few days in September, the alarm would sound daily at 11:03 in the mornings. It would scream for an exact amount of time before deactivating and then reactivating again two minutes later. This continued a total of three times, every morning at the same time and for the same duration. Since the 8th of September, this alarm has gradually transmuted to 13:30 in the afternoons. Bulletin joined in on the search and through a concerted effort by the homeowner and our team, we have managed to narrow the search area down to a block of flats in First Avenue where we believe the sound to be emanating from. On Tuesday we contacted the owner of this block of flats who lives in Pretoria. He was notably surprised when we relayed to him our findings. “I am really quite baffled by your report,” he said. “Not one of my occupants have reported an alarm sounding in their complex and certainly not as regularly during the day as you describe. Not one of the units in my building is fitted with an alarm system and the only siren we have installed is connected to our electric fence.” According to the owner of the flats, he installed an alarm system and electrified fence around the complex approximately two months ago as a counter measure for the Night Crawler who had been plaguing the area. In our quest to discover its origin and subsequently bring to an end this siren’s reign of peace depriving terror, we have arranged with the landlord and the installer of the perimeter fencing to meet at the complex sometime this week. We have been granted permission to enter the premises and trigger the alarm in order to determine whether it is indeed the sound the entire neighbourhood has been reporting. We will post our findings in the follow up report.

Round two for the Checkers rodents

■ Joe Dreyer

The problematic rodent situation at the Lifestyle centre seems to have reared its furry head once more. Following a Bulletin article about a number of rats having been spotted feasting off the dogfood and the biscuits among the aisles in Checkers at Lifestyle Tzaneen, the regional manager of Checkers, Vincent Kotzee, paid the store a visit along with the top management of the contractor responsible for the store’s pest control and the manager of cleaning specialists at the centre.

During a discussion in which Bulletin was present, it was determined that the rodent problem was not at all restricted to only the Checkers retail space, but that other retailers in the centre were experiencing a similar problem. The pest control contractor upped his team’s efforts to rid the store of the infestation and offered the assurance that the problem was now a thing of the past. This was in June this year. Fast forward to August and Tzaneen’s locals again complained of rodent sightings in Checkers. Checkers management was contacted and Kotzee took

Stand van Damme Dam Levels

immediate action. “We have ended the contract with our previous contractor in all our stores in the region and have appointed a new company to handle the rodents. We encourage our loyal customers to keep informing us of any issues, especially those related to rodents and other pests,” Kotzee said sternly. It is probable that because of the recent efforts by a local feral cat lobby group, these rodents now have no natural predators. Zambia canned, Durban now in sight ■

Joe Dreyer

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) have decided not to take part in this year’s Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games to be held in Lusaka, Zambia from the 22nd to the 24th of September for fear of xenophobic attacks on their team members. Each year the GTM joins around 100 local municipalities from the SADC region in a series of international games which include netball, soccer, athletics, chess, darts and swimming. Other disciplines include volleyball, fishing and table tennis. Last year these games were held in Matsapha, Swaziland and Bulletin reported that the GTM’s participation came with a price tag of R757 617 to send 126 of its employees to Swaziland. The amount of R757 617 paid forward by the municipality is in addition to the R200 monthly contributions by the employees to cover the costs of their participation in the games. This logically excludes full paid leave which the employees will be receiving while out of the country. However, the director for Community Services, Alex Nkuna, has decided to withdraw the GTM’s participation in Zambia this year as he fears for the safety of the group. In a report tabled in council last week he overdramatically stated that “due to the security with the recent xenophobic attacks in some parts of the country we have realized that it will be suicidal to cross the borders to our neighbouring countries.” The report later states that the GTM will no longer participate in SAIMSA games in the future either. In the same breath, Nkuna then requested permission from council to allow the GTM delegation to attend the South African Municipal Sport and Recreation

Association (SAMSRA) games instead. These games are to be held in Kwazulu-Natal to be held from the 21st to the 28th of September. In anticipation of their attendance in Zambia, the GTM had already made certain preparations such as paying over R200 000 to Nomad Court Lodge on a block booking, appointing a transport provider and acquiring all the necessary kit for the participating teams. In total 126 GTM employees will be attending. The expenditure breakdown for the KZN trip includes R502 900 for accommodation (60 rooms booked for seven nights not including the six rooms for the seven councillors which are booked separately), R140 000 for transport (two busses at R50 000 each and two Quantums at R10 000 each which does not include the flights for the councillors), R108 360 for sneakers (that’s right, each person participating in the games receives a R1100 pair of sneakers for their efforts) and a R6 000 affiliation fee. The six councillors will

GTM Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala

be flown down to Durban at a cost of R28 000 and will each stay in separate accommodation at an extra cost of R49 560 for the seven days. There is also an “S and T” fee for 124 people over eight days amounting to R119 040 and an additional R2 400 fee for the twoman advance team. The estimated costs of this exercise is R946 260. The internal sports committee will contribute a further amount of R230 055 for golf shirts (R34 880.90), Tracksuits (R151 074 .50) and sports bags (R44 100). In comparison to Zambia, the accommodation in Durban is roughly R300 000 more expensive. We do not know why the councillors are afforded special privilege to be flown down to Durban while the rest of the employees are bussed down, or why they are accommodated separately.

Dit was vroegoggend Vrydag toe ‘n ontploffing deur winkeleienaars in Koedoe Straat gevoel is.

Foto’s: Joe Dreyer

Granny’s Grumbles - THE BOTSWANA BUS TRIP

The Message

F A R

Everybody at some time during their life has been on a bus trip – whether it be going backwards and forwards to school or on a longer journey. When you go on exceptionally long trips you can on occasion land up with a stranger stuck next to you for hours. Since the advent of e-tolls and old age I have used the bus on many occasions – numerous trips to Johannesburg, one long trip to Durban and a longer trip to Botswana. Generally speaking I just need a book of block words and a sharp pencil and I’m happy traveller, but I have had a couple of travelling companions that I would prefer to forget. When you catch the bus in Phalaborwa to go to Johannesburg you get onto an empty bus and everybody grabs a single seat.. By the time you reach Polokwane the seats are filling up and you know that YOUR seat is not going to be yours for much longer. My worst incident was getting a travelling companion who made the Michelin man look positively anorexic – as he heaved himself into his section of the seat he just spread right over to my side and I was effectively jammed against the window for four hours. Another interesting trip was when the bus

N O R T H

picked up a rather large young lady travelling with a human-sized Teddy bear with a valentine card stuck around its neck. Since it was the 15th February I assumed she had only just received it from some admirer and she had no intention of putting it in the cargo hold. She sat for the first half-hour with Teddy on her lap and then decided she had to send an e-mail via her lap top so asked if I would mind if she stretched him out with his head on my lap and then she would be able to put the lap top on his legs and send a VERY important message. Ah!! Young love!! I sat with Teddy gazing up at me and had to forego my appointment with my block word puzzle for over an hour. My most unforgettable trip however was definitely the Botswana trip. On my way to Gaberone to help my daughter recover from her post natal blues I had discovered that the bus stopped at virtually every trading store on the route to pick up or offload passengers. It was also a chance to use the ablution facilities which were in many instances rather suspect. During the journey I had a youngish chap who shared my seat for a couple of hours – he was obviously very tired because he was asleep within ten minutes of take-off and his head started sliding down towards my shoulder. It was fairly obvious that he had no idea that his head was sliding down and at such a rate it would very soon be on my lap. He was snoring loudly and his mouth was wide open so I let him be – suddenly the bus hit what must have been an enormous pothole and he woke up with a start – gave me a filthy look and managed to find himself another seat. Did he think I was an elderly lady with designs on him – who knows but at least I had my seat to myself for a couple of hours. After a week in Botswana I was dropped off at the bus stop for the long trek home. My daughter handed me a brand new book of block word puzzles so I envisioned a boredom free trip I knew all about the innumerable stops at trading stores and long periods of gazing at acacia scrub so immersed myself in my puzzles and took no

notice of the comings and goings of the people around me until suddenly I realised that there appeared to be a deathly silence in the bus. I looked around – not a soul in sight – looked out of the window – acres and acres of tarmac indicated that we had arrived at the border and here I was alone in the bus. I grabbed my handbag and headed for the door – it was locked. I tried the driver’s door – also locked. Could I get out via an emergency door? No instructions. What was I going to do? Looked out of my window and considered the drop – too high for a woman hitting 60. I saw a car coming along so yelled and screamed but presumably my voice was lost in the sound of the car engine because the driver just continued on his merry way. Another two cars passed relatively close and also didn’t stop in spite of my yelling and screaming. Ten minutes passed – I was frantic!! A station wagon appeared on the horizon – with two little boys hanging out of the back window. I hung dangerously low out of the window, screamed loudly and thumped the sides of the bus. The boys waved happily – I made a throat-slitting action…… would they know what that meant? The car carried on and I slumped back in my seat. A couple of minutes went by and I realised that the station wagon was returning very slowly. It stopped – the driver got out and asked in a rather embarrassed tone whether there was a problem. Indeed there was – I was effectively imprisoned in the bus, but managed to make it sound as though I had dozed off unwittingly. Should he go and find the bus driver? I would have thrown my arms around him had I been on the ground, but since I was a couple of metres up in the air I restrained myself sufficiently to pour out my thanks and blow kisses to the boys. Five minutes later the bus driver arrived complete with a face like a fried boot and demanded to know where I had been when he rest of the passengers had disembarked. I said I thought I must have dozed off. I was frog-marched into the Immigration building where 50 pairs of eyes looked accusingly at me as though I had just broken some cardinal rule. I have never travelled cross-border since then and don’t think I will!

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them (on a bus?)” Mark Twain

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church How many people are really lonely? I believe that there are many out there, people that you and I know, but also don’t know. Many of them put on an air of happiness and yes, can be seen as the life of a party. They hide behind a false façade, a mask of sorts. Yet they are extremely lonely, they go home to an empty house, empty of someone to talk to. Good friends become acquaintances, even your best friend rejects you for something you did, perhaps, unknowingly or due to your own ignorance of what you were actually doing. So the person you thought you would share your old age with has left. You respect their wishes and go out on your own with the hope that one day this relationship will be rebuilt. Many people in old age homes seldom see their family, they often only see them on special occasions, birthdays etc. Some join club or go to church to try to build some sort of friendship circle, once again they go home alone. Thanks to modern technology they can watch entertainment on T.V. or spend time reading, but it is the physical contact that is lacking, here I am referring to communication, someone to listen to, to laugh with. Often, it is our failure to tell others because of our pride, so we give the impression that we are “alright” Sad! But are we really alone? In our spiritual life we should know that we are never alone, for if we believe in Christ’s promises then we know that He is always with us, yes it is not the same as physical contact, but faith. Somehow, we get through daily and we are always not fully aware of how this happens. It is by the grace of God, He brings you through all times of trouble. We know that we can always turn to Him for comfort, in praying for ourselves, but more importantly by asking Him for His grace. We have to put aside our pride and let others share in our loneliness. It is only by sharing that we receive, by giving that we receive. So be brave and we don’t need to be lonely.

Adam’s Café turns 20 this week!

Joe Dreyer

It has been twenty years and the little corner café at Adam’s Circle is still dishing up the best slap chips this side of the equator. Adam’s Café, one of the last known proper corner “keffies” has been running for two decades. In fact it is very likely that most of the business owners now nearing their fourties stocked up on their daily Wilson’s toffee supply at Adam’s back in the 90’s and are still doing so to this day – though the toffees have likely been transmuted to chilli chips and fresh rolls. The building itself has seen a lot of changes and most recently a face lift, yet one constant has remained to this day. Her name is Aggie Malesa and she has been the voice and face of

this little landmark since it started back in September of 1999. Joining her as a long standing familiar face is Thaphelos Rekhotso who has been serving customers for 15 years since he joined the team in 2004. The first owners of Adam’s Café were Manie and Patrys De Villiers who later sold the shop to Beate Altenroxel on the 1st of October 2010. Under her guidance the little shop became a business and in July 2014 a second Adam’s Café was opened in Plantation Street in the industrial area. Initially the shop delivered their orders to businesses in the area on bicycles, but as the times changed, this service has become more streamlined and now the streets of Tzaneen is crowded with five of the little delivery motorbikes scurrying all over the place to ensure lunch time orders

are on time, every time. “The thing is, Adam’s Café is exactly what it is, a corner café. We are not a grocer or a convenience store and that is exactly what this community has come to love. Slap chips, homemade pies, Russians and piping hot freshly baked buns is what we do best,” said Altenroxel proudly. “Sure, you can pick up your weekly paper, grab a soda and something sweet while you’re here, but we all know that is not the draw card.” With everything ever changing in a world that seems to have lost its personality, it is comforting to know that Adam’s Café remains as one of the last bastions of a childhood many of us remember all too fondly. Head on over to Adam’s and grab a portion of slap chips, a fresh loaf and a 2 litre Coke and hit your sofa this weekend. Relive your good old days.

Maandag z die 9de September was allermins blou.

Die ander ses maande sal ek graag my studies in Potchefstroom wil voortsit”.
