Yet another prison holding cell break ■ Joe Dreyer Shockingly, four extremely dangerous criminals managed to escape from lawful custody in Hoedspruit this week, and they still have not been recaptured. Despite this publication’s questions to the provincial spokesperson of the police, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, at the time of going to print we had received absolutely no feedback on the progress of what we would assume is a very urgent manhunt. So far this year there have been a total of 57 confirmed escapees out of the country’s correctional services’ prisons. As it stands the Limpopo region’s prisons, which include facilities in Mpumalanga, are 231% overcrowded with a shortage of 730 beds. All of this is made available in the department’s annual report for the 2018/2019 period. In the latest incident on Sunday, four prison-
ers aged between 31 and 41 years, managed to escape through the roof of the Hoedspruit cells. We were not offered any further details nor was it made clear whether adequate supervision was present at the time of the escape. One of the escapees, Neverdie Dyayani Baloyi (39) is considered extremely dangerous and is facing charges of murder, rape, house and business robbery. He is believed to be residing in the Tzaneen area currently and police have warned citizens not to approach him alone should they encounter him. The other three escapees were Jacky Frans Sekgobela (41) wanted for house robbery and business robbery. This escapee committed several crimes in Limpopo and Mpumalanga and is regarded as dangerous. Vanrooi Pompi Khosa (36) He resides at Cottondale in Acornhoek and is fac-
ing two charges of house breaking and theft and Wilson Letebele (31) from the Willows village outside Hoedspruit. He is wanted for house breaking and robbery. A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened and investigations into the circumstances of the escape have already begun. Community members are warned that these four criminals are dangerous, they must not try to apprehend them but must instead inform the Police quickly. Police request anyone with valuable information that can lead to the rearrest of these criminals to contact the Station Commander of Hoedspruit Lt.Col Olivia Rhulani Mabasa at 0825658253 or Detective Commander, Captain Cobra Moriri at 0825734773. Alternatively, to visit their nearest Police Station or Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or SMS Line 32211.

■ Joe Dreyer Once again it is the community who acted on information they received through the local press, which led to the recapturing of three escaped criminals. In an official statement from the provincial police spokesperson, the SAPS applaud the alertness and “willingness to work alongside the police” of the average Joe Citizen. Last week we reported on the escape from lawful custody of five awaiting trail prisoners from the Witpoort police holding cells. Two prisoners, Paul Madira (19) initially arrested for rape and Lesiba Frans Machaba (27), arrested for burglary business, were recaptured by the police yesterday morning during an operation that was activated soon after receiving valuable information from community members.

The Police in Hlogotlou outside Groblersdal have opened a case of Culpable Homicide after five school children aged between 15 and 18 were killed during a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Tuesday (2019-11-05) afternoon at about 14h00. The accident happened along the R574 road between Groblersdal and Mpudulle. The driver of a Nissan NP200 bakkie apparently lost control of the vehicle when approaching Matrompi bridge along the said road and it rolled several times, instantly killing the five learners and
critically injuring the driver and his crew. The injured were taken to hospital. The deceased, all girls from Mashego Secondary School in Monsterlus, were allegedly hitchhiking next to the local filling station and were given a lift by the driver of the said vehicle. They were coming from school to their respective residences at Sephaku and Kgaphamadi villages. They were identified as Beauty Motsweni and Pearl Rakgalakane from Sephaku, Lucy Monareng, Chantel Monareng and Karabo Mogoaneng from Kgaphamadi. Police investigations are continuing.

Another R90m flushed down the MDM drain ■
Mango zamas warned ■
Joe Dreyer
Mango theft, in particular the theft of green mangoes off community owned farms, has once again come into the spotlight. This time however, it is not the concerned residents on neighbouring farms raising the alarm, but traditional leaders making their voices heard. And it is about time too – lest we forget Dindinnie in 2017 and the ongoing theft at Bali. Traditional leaders described the theft of green mangoes from these farms, most of which were returned to various communities through the government`s Land redistribution programme, as being no different to “one breaking a leg and still expecting to win a race.” This comes in the wake of various vehicles seen lining the tar road in attempt to sell green mangoes most of which are stolen during the evenings at abandoned farms. The issue came to light after an incident where a man was intercepted by the community while stealing mangoes from a village farm in the Julesburg area a week ago. According to sources a group of would-be thieves were stealing green mangoes during the night when they were seen by the farmer and a mob was called to assist. This resulted in one person killed by the mob. Issuing a warning to the community, headman, Mhlarhi Mugiyo, said that with the green mango season open, it is common that people are caught stealing the mangoes during the night so that they could be sold at the atchar producing factories the following day. “With the green season open our youths, some of whom are too lazy to work, are indulging in theft of mangoes on the farms which belong to
communities. These youths take advantage of the lack of infrastructure such as electric fences which very often leads to unfortunate instances such as the death of the Julesburg youth last week,” said Mugiyo. “In this village we do not want the youths who are teaching other children to steal mangoes, but instead welcome young entrepreneurs who seek ways to alleviate poverty. We need solutions, not criminals. Those who wish to continue stealing should take heed of this warning, you will be caught and arrested or perhaps even worse.” The words of the old man fell on deaf ears though as the theft of mangoes continued. Last week a farmer and a local headman, Ben Khumalo, had their hands full and had to enlist the services of the street patrollers to assist after his farm was cleaned out of the green mangoes by residents who stay near the farm. Though he was helped, it was too little too late. Every late spring and early summer in Tzaneen, Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit, Duiwelskloof, Letsitele, Bolobedu and other areas of the tropical paradise it is “Mango Season”. Green mangoes are picked and either sold to bakkie owners at R40 a crate or to the atchar producing factories in Tzaneen and Nkowankowa for cash. Most of the factories buy the mangoes at a decent price without asking too many questions about its origins. For most people, like Anna on the Bali farm, this is their only means of income. For this situation, the blame needs to be placed squarely on the all too silent Mopani District Municipality who, to date, has still not tabled a clear and definite plan of action regarding their proposed Agri-Hub at the Bali farm site.

The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) has long blamed illegal water connections for the water shortages experienced in many of the rural areas within their jurisdiction. In an effort to curb this, the MDM started a project to install a steel pipeline though the areas of Lenyene where the majority of these illegal connections were discovered. According to them, the new pipeline which would stretch through Lenyenye to the Thabina Water Works, would deter these connections. An amount of R90 million was set aside for this project. They were wrong. The only thing that flowed through the pipeline was another dismal failure as the same pipe was damaged by community members shortly after installation and new illegal connections made. Employees of the MDM who spoke to Bulletin on the basis of anonymity said that though work on the new pipeline had started a long time ago, it could not bear any fruit because the pipe had
been cut by community members where it passed through the township before reaching Thabina. According to them, the water crisis in that area was very far being solved as the residents are sabotaging themselves. The communities responsible for tampering with the pipe are specifically Moime, Mapolankeni, Mokomotji, Mosorong, Thabine and the nearby Rasebalane villages. The matter resulted in rivalries between the residents of the townships and the rural areas. Those living in the rural areas remain adamant that they should not be forced to pay for water when the pipeline runs right through their area. “Why should the township have water and we have to watch it pass by our houses?” The project came on the heels of another R90 million also from the previous budget to refurbish the sewage plant which was once abandoned after a contractor was paid money but never completed the project. There has not been any provision made in the new budget for Lenyenye’s water woes.

Mopani’s water trucks fill Lenyenye reservoirs ■
Jeff Jackson
The week-long protests by residents of Lenyenye and the surrounding extensions seeking to be provided with clean water for 24 hours a week, were at last placed on hold last Friday. This after protesters were convinced that as a temporary measure residents would be supplied with water which would be trucked into reservoirs from other water sources preferably in Nkowankowa and Tzaneen. The solution came on the back of aggressive protests last week. As usual it took the residents to become violent first before the politicians sat up in their air-conditioned offices and provided solutions. The entire town was shut down by residents by blocking the R36 regional road and all the streets that led in and out of the township as well all the streets that could be used as alternatives by motorists and taxis. Branches, burning tyres, and overturned dustbins were used as barricades with the toil dumped at the entrance of the satellite offices of the GTM in the township. In an unprecedented act, workers were prevented from going to work while trying to exit the township, shops were ordered to close while taxis were also stopped from entering and exiting the township. Schooling took a back seat as children were prevented from attending the various schools. Only police stations and the Magistrate’s offices operated. As usual, the strike started at the
local filing station which was ordered to close and tyres were set alight just a stone’s throw from it. On Friday matters took a new twist with proceedings commencing at the offices of the GTM where they started by throwing garbage at the gates before entering and threatening to burn the building to the ground if their demand for water was not addressed. It took GTM employees who were at work, some convincing as to where the problem with water lies, and some of them were even taken to the empty reservoirs and the areas where the newly installed steel pipeline (which cost R90 million) was tampered with. It is reported that residents were incensed after their ward councillor allegedly said that protesters should bring him containers to fill them with “natural water”. After this, a meeting was called between the community and the authorities. During this meeting the community said that they would resolve to place the protests on hold and see whether the promises made to supply them with water via water tankers would materialize. Leaders of the march told the community during the meetings that following their investigations and the subsequent meetings with officials from the district municipality (MDM), trucks would deliver water to the reservoirs in the township for three days a week and water supply would be opened daily according to the schedules of operators.

Magoebaskloof mystery solved Lephepane projects see ■ the light (about time) Joe Dreyer
The notorious Magoebaskloof pass very nearly claimed another life this week when Lienkie Reynolds went over the side of the road in her vehicle on Sunday afternoon. Reynolds, a much loved business woman from Hoedspruit, was reported missing over social media on Sunday evening following the accident. According to reports from the rescuers on the scene at the time, her abandoned vehicle was discovered on a gravel road just off the R71 road late on the afternoon of the 3rd of November. Members of Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch immediately contacted the relevant authorities and a search operation was launched. The search was however later called off after nightfall as the steep terrain could not be searched effectively or safely in the dark. Reynolds’ personal belongings including her cell phone and handbag were found inside the vehicle and the passenger side door was ajar indicating that she had exited the vehicle by that way. It is alleged that the driver-side door was jammed shut against a tree. Of her however, there appeared to be no trace. On Monday morning, the 4th of November, the search resumed from the location where the car was found.
Teams which included people from Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch, EMS, SAPS, Letaba Fire Protection Association, SLM, Warriors, ZZ2 Tracker Team, Flycam, Mopani Fire and Rescue Services and Mopani District Municipality Disaster Management Centre undertook a gridded search in an attempt to find her. Maps, detailing the topography, location of the car and other details, were prepared along with a search grid which could guide a systematic search and rescue operation. Within approximately two hours, the missing woman was located. Information has it that she was severely dehydrated and unable to move due to the steep incline where she was stranded against. She was treated on site by Deon van Tonder and carried out to a waiting ambulance. She was transported to hospital by TEMS Ambulance. “We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude towards everyone who participated in the search & rescue operation,” said Louise Claassens of the HNW, “the successful outcome is the result of fine team-work and a close working relationship between the community and first responders.” At the time of going to print it was not made clear what caused the accident and we were not able to make contact with Reynolds.

The two projects to construct a new clinic at Long Valley and the Mathlogwe communities in Letsitele Valley near Agatha, have at last seen the light of day. This after work on these projects commenced recently. While the construction of the clinic was halted due to misunderstandings within community structures, the much anticipated paved road at Mathlogwe, was met with protests to the civic centre, just a few days after its sod turning. According to some community members, the projects could have been completed a long time ago, had it not been for numerous arguments and debates on which contractor would be hired for the project. After the launch which was attended by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality mayor, Maripe Mangena, the community organised trucks to
stage a protest at the Civic Centre where they demanded the resignation of the ward councillor for that area, Margareth Letsoalo. The road will start from the 12 kilometre spot at the Khujwana-Lephepane access road and will circumnavigate the communities of Bvumeni, Matapa, Mathlogwe and Leseka before reaching Leseka Primary School. The road will be paved with bricks and local residents have been appointed to work on the project. At Long Valley where the desperately dilapidated Lesedi clinic is being rebuilt from scratch on of the Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba, work has also started with the palisade fence already completed and now stands ripe for the scrap metal pickers. In another development the tar road between the communities of Moime, Lenyenye and Khujwana is nearing completion with finishing touches having commenced this week.

Granny’s Grumbles - THE SECRETARIES CONVENTION
In 1993 there was to be a Secretaries Convention at the Carlton Hotel in the Johannesburg CBD. Who or how it was organised is lost in the mists of time, but suffice to say that PMC was invited to send as many secretaries as possible. The mine decided to send four secretaries and I was one of them and we were to stay at the Carlton. I had never been near a hotel as large or impressive and filled with ambitious secretaries – more than seven hundred. When I eventually got to see one of the clerks at the counter my luggage was handed over to a porter who took off to deliver it to my room. A short while later I was handed my room key and tag and pointed in the direction of the elevators. Sixth Floor – No 14. The key absolutely refused to move in the keyhole – what the heck was going on? Eventually I was on my knees trying to look through the keyhole – maybe it was blocked. A member of the staff who was passing with a trolley of linen saw my predicament and said the tag
was actually what unlocked the door. She slid it in and the door opened. I insisted that she give me a quick lesson in how to open a door with a tag and fervently hoped that I was not the first member of the hoi polloi who had made an absolute fool of herself. When I was safely ensconced in the room I sat on one of the easy chairs gazing at the enormous bed and room The bedside table was interesting – tiled with squares each with a number or symbol. The bath also was not intended for a rural hick… normal taps at the end of the bath and then extra tap-lookalikes jutting out of the opposite side of the bath. I wondered what they did so turned one in what I thought was the right direction – water spewed from above and onto my perfectly coiffured hairdo. I didn’t dare touch the plug which appeared to be stuck six inches above the bath - how did you get that to stop the water? After an amazing meal and rather too much wine we repaired to our respective rooms – I gazed at my bed which appeared only slightly smaller than a boxing ring and settled down for a good night’s sleep. Sometime later I was awoken by the most incredibly loud noise which seemed to be coming from the wall unit. I leapt out of bed and opened the doors of the unit which contained a large television which appeared to have miraculously turned itself on and was on highest volume imaginable. No remote in sight – couldn’t find any controls on the TV itself – I was visualising being unceremoniously booted off the premises for having woken up the entire floor. In desperation I yanked the wall plug out – instant silence. I eventually did sleep, but the first thing I did in the morning was grab one of the cleaning ladies and ask her what on earth had happened with the television. Turned
out the bedside table was the remote – she showed me how it worked but I still didn’t know how the TV had suddenly burst into action in the middle of the night. That morning we met for breakfast and decided we would probably split up as there were numerous speakers in various conference rooms so I only saw my friends later that evening. During lunch hour we all repaired to a computerized stand and collected our multiple choice questionnaires. Just a case of ticking the boxes – the questions did not in any way relate to secretarial duties – in fact I thought them rather inane questions. “If you were on a desert island would you rather have with you? “Your dog, your boyfriend or a library of books?” Very easy to answer and then you just popped it into the mailbox at said stand and came back three hours later for your three page assessment. I retired to my bedroom to read the three pages. How on earth had a computer managed to work out my traits and foibles from me answering a few absurd questions? No manager in his right mind would ever give me a job if he read my assessment. Mary handed me her assessment – I would have employed her on the spot had I been a boss and the other two were also in the top ten. I was eventually persuaded to go to my room and collect mine. “What an interesting assessment” said Mary. “Mine is boring in comparison”. I said nothing – I could probably have scraped a job in a circus or a travelling fair. “Does not enjoy being in a structured environment”. Presumably the computer had picked this up from my answers. “Becomes bored with repetitive work”. Numerous snippets indicated that I was not really suited to the secretarial world. In spite of these remarks the computer found that I was quite a likeable person.

ATKV Letaba wys hul gee om BJV skuts skitter ■
■

Local blues and 70’s rock band, Rock Regime, is renowned for their exceptional tribute to the classics of the last century and have already gained quite a significant following across the region as far as Polokwane. Most recently the outfit, consisting of four local professionals, lifted the roof at Safari Pub and Grill and rocked out the following weekend at the Magoebaskloof Rest Camp off the R71. The latter was a performance that coincided with the annual year-end send off for the motorcycle club, Ulysses. Having performed at venues including Boma@Warriors, Soetdorings Country Club, Maxim’s, The Manor and Safari Pub and Grill, the foursome is gearing up for the festive season with two gigs already booked. Follow them on Facebook by liking their page “Rock Regime” and @RockRegime on Instagram.

Bush baby survives dog attack ■ Roelof de Jonge Tzaneen, like other towns in close proximity to the Kruger National Park and other private game reserves in the area, is well known for an abundance of wildlife. Often these animals interact with their human neighbours which sometimes leads to confrontations. In one such instance this week, a baby thicktailed Bush Baby survived an attack by neighbourhood dogs which resulted in its mother running off and sibling being killed. The Bush Baby was brought into the Tzaneen Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in King Edward Drive on Sunday where Azelle Grobler and her team are currently tending to it. We paid her a visit on Wednesday and took these beautiful photos showing the tiny mammal recovering well. “The little one will make it just fine. It’s lucky really and we will try and nurse it back to health as best we can before attempting to release it back into the wild. It is crucial for Tzaneen residents to understand that wildlife are not pets and should
not be treated as such.” It is against the law for any member of the public to keep and raise wildlife. Tzaneen Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is the only registered rehab centre with all the necessary permits to keep wildlife. The centre also works very closely with qualified veterinarians when medical assistance is needed. They also rely on donations and financial support from the public. “We really do have a continuous struggle on our hands with people keeping these tiny creatures as pets and then they end up bringing them to us either sick or completely tame and unable to be released back into the wild.” Residents who would like to make a donation can use the following banking details. The wildlife rehabilitation welcomes any contributions which will certainly make a huge change in helping animals in need for rehabilitation. Banking details: First National Bank Tzaneen Cheque account: 6279 004 1174 Branch code: 204 909
New Nissan Micra 1.0t added to line-up ■ Motoring The fifth generation Nissan Micra was first launched in South Africa last June and has taken the country’s small car segment by storm with its sophisticated appearance.
You weren’t made to fit in. You were made to stand out. And so was the new Nissan Micra 1.0t. This is how Nissan South African describes the new Nissan Micra. The latest addition to the fifth generation Micra family, the new Nissan Micra 1.0t was designed to

reflect who you are and all that you’ve achieved. And saving fuel as well which is very important for a South African perspective. Sporty and stylish, it has a DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline Turbo) engine which produces 84kW and engineered to offer customers a more performance-oriented drive. The Micra’s strong point is its 180Nm of torque, plus an additional 20Nm on the overboost. Building on this success, Nissan earlier this year added the Nissan Micra Acenta Plus Tech to its line-up. The new Micra is packed to the hilt with the latest in automotive technology, including an array of Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) features that were all created with the future of mobility in mind. This stylish hatchback was one of the 12 finalists in the 2019 AutoTrader South African Car of the Year competition. The new kid on the block, the new Nissan Micra 1.0t is pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering even further. Its design turns heads wherever it goes to let the world know that you’ve arrived.
The Nissan Micra 1.0t has developed a name for being a fantastic car to drive. It offers both driving pleasure and outstanding practicality, with a dynamic performance that strikes the perfect balance between agility, excitement and the security that comes with confident and predictable handling. Nissan South Africa announced the arrival of the Micra Acenta Plus Tech modelin February this year. The range-topping version of the fifth-generation Micra features Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility technology package, which includes an around view monitor, moving object detection, blind-spot warning and intelligent emergency braking. The Micra Acenta Plus Tech model also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility through a seven-inch touchscreen. The flagship Micra comes with rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, auto-folding side-mirrors and an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. Hill start assist, intelligent trace control and intelligent ride control are also included. The Micra Acenta Plus Tech is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels. Nissan offers the Micra with a six-year or 150 000km and a three-year or 90 000km service plan. As with the three other derivatives in the local Micra range, the Acenta Plus Tech model’s power comes from a turbocharged 0,9-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. This power unit produces 66kW and 140N.m coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox. Gordon swats “the” Insect ■ Roelof de Jonge
Alan Gordon who triumphed at the eight days Crocodile Trophy Mountain Bike (MTB) race in Australia in October, kept his winning ways going the past weekend. Gordon from the Insect Science MTB team took his fourth victory in four years in a new look and sponsored Insect Science Classic mountain bike race (formerly known as the Magoebaskloof Classic) on Saturday the 2nd of November. He finished the 70km main race in a time of 02:57.39. Second place in this race went to Gordon’s fellow Insect Science team mate, CP van Wyk, who also competed along Gordon in Australia where he finished a credible ninth place. For the sponsors this race was a fairy tale beginning when Gordon and van Wyk claimed the first two spots on the podium for Team Insect Science. Van Wyk finished in a time of 03:01.45. The third place a further eight minutes behind van Wyk went to Rory Button who completed the course in a time of 03:09.36. The first female rider over the line was Johannesburg rider Sarah Hill who took the victory in a time of 03:17.16. This race which started at Stanford Lake College, saw quite a number of MTB riders taking part despite the hype of the Springboks playing England in the final of the IRB 2019 Rugby World Cup final match later the morning. The organisers of the Insect Science Classic however released a late update on the race. In an effort to align the distances of this race with that of Limpopo Cycling, the organisers have decided to shorten the distances. The new adjusted distances for the Insect Science Classic were contested over 70km for the main race, 35km and 18km. The 10km fun race remained the same. The organisers noted that for the diehard Springbok supporters who wanted to watch the game live, the shortened distances will help those to get back in time for this all important rugby match. The match that was shown on two big screens in the Barnyard Theatre saw cyclists along with families, friends and race organisers jump in celebration when the Springboks defeated the English Roses winning the coveted cup for a third time.
Eshard Mothapo and Wilhelm Groenewald (35km Race).
