Winkler whose achievements include a fourth place in the World Idols contest, being a Disney Soundtrack artist singing “Chasing Shadows” for the South African soundtrack of Treasure Planner, as well as multiple awards and award nominations in South Africa, is currently working on his second Christian Contemporary Worship album. Matlala is back in office ■

Joe Dreyer

Thapelo Matlala is back in office following a concerted effort by elements within the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) to have him removed from the municipal manager’s chair. On Monday morning amid some speculation that he may not return to take up the mantle of accounting officer, Matlala arrived for work. His first order of business was a meeting with the executive management team. His two week absence was a result of a provisional suspension imposed upon him by the GTM Council after he cancelled a tender project and saved the municipality R38 million. The case found its way into the labour court

where Matlala’s legal team opposed the suspension and fought to have him reinstated immediately as the suspension was deemed illegal and unfounded. To this day, there is still no clarity as to what exactly Matlala had done to warrant the suspension, nor has there been any explanation as to what the council was investigating regarding the Codesa and Maluti roads project which has now become known as the Tshiamiso Affair. Matlala overturned the decision to award a roads tender to Tshiamiso after he discovered that the contractor had misrepresented on its bill of quantities in order to secure the tender. The project was cancelled and Matlala saved the GTM R38 million which Tshiamiso had demanded

above the tendered and agreed upon amount. Following this act by the municipal manager, there was a failed assassination attempt on his life, and an almost immediate suspension. Not moments after he vacated his office, it was boldly announced that the VBS-linked CFO, Palesa Makhubela, would stand in as acting municipal manager. A source close to the municipality alleged that the move was indicative of the council’s intent to pay over the money to the contractor. Matlala won the labour court case and retook the reins before this could happen. The question now is whether the attacks by the unionists and opposing factionists against Matlala will intensify as he continues his crusade to rid the municipality of corruption.

GTM’s new elevator ■

Joe Dreyer

Regular visitors to the GTM’s offices in the centre of Tzaneen will have noticed construction workers hard at work a few metres from the entrance to the building. A brand new elevator is being installed to connect the ground floor to the to the third floor

offices which will allow easier access for the elderly and the handicapped. The elevator is being installed at a cost of R1.6 million through a joint venture between two contractors namely Immaculate and V3F. The duration of the project was initially set at four months, but delays from the supplier has moved the deadline on toward January 2020.

MEDIA ROADWORKS NOTICE: THE IMPROVEMENT OF NATIONAL ROAD R81 SECTION 1 FROM MUNNIK KM 61.2 TO GA-SEKGOPO KM 71.2 LIMPOPO PROVINCE, MOPANI DISTRICT, GREATER LETABA MUNICIPALITY The South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) advises travellers and residents in and around the Ga-Sekgopo area, the surrounding farms and road users travelling along the Road R81 Section 1 between Polokwane and Giyani or passing to and from Modjadjiskloof towards Polokwane of the roadworks now underway for a period of 18 Months starting in August 2019 until February 2021. Residents and Road users are advised that: • The above-mentioned completion date may change due to unforeseen circumstances. • Two-way traffic flow will be maintained throughout this construction duration between Kilometre mark (Km) 61.2 and Km 66.2, and between Km 67.4 and Km 71. 2, hence motorists urged to drive with caution along these sections of the road. • One-way traffic flow with 24 hour STOP/GO traffic control will however be encountered between Km 66.20 and Km 67.4 due to the improvements to an existing bridge and the half width construction of a new bridge across the Middle Letaba River respectively. As a result of this, speed limits of up to 30km/hr will be implemented along this particular section of the road. This will lead to travel time delays within that section of the road both during the day and at night. Travellers are advised to be patient and exercise extreme caution when travelling along this particular section of the road. This isa work zone area and there are workers present whose safety is of paramount importance. • Appropriate signage will be in place and all road users are requested and advised to take note of the signage displayed over this period. • Blasting works are also scheduled to take place along the mountain pass section of the road. During blasting, the road will be closed for a duration of time due to safety implications. Due to the expected congestion and travel time delays along the section of the road, SANRAL recommends those road users, and in particular, heavy trucks and buses consider making use of alternative routes. SANRAL regrets the inconvenience caused during this period of road improvement and thanks all travellers in advance for their co-operation and patience.

Van Staden neem die Vossie leisels oor ■

Joe Dreyer

Charmaine sal moontlik binnekort as Afrikaans-onderwyser ook by die Vossie-familie inskakel.

Granny’s Grumbles - A COMEDY OF ERRORS

It was the latter part of 2007. I was managing a nursery on the outskirts of Phalaborwa and at very short notice had been offered a landscaping job which needed to be done immediately. The Board of Directors of an out-of-town company had let them know that they would be visiting the following week. Basically what the company needed was a complete make-over for what can only be classified as a terribly neglected garden which had not been looked at for years. I love a challenge and said I would start immediately. Two days later I set forth in my trusty old Isuzu bakkie with four gardeners, hundreds of plants and bags of compost. We spent eight hours of solid digging, planting, moving rocks and generally trying to make a barren wasteland into something halfway decent. At 4.30 we loaded the bakkie with rubble, weeds, old branches and any other rubbish and I transported the staff to the bus-stop. I then headed for the home of the company manager to explain that we would need to collect another load of rubbish the following day. I was already anticipating the cool shower I would have when I arrived home since I was covered in sweat and grime. Upon arrival at the manager’s house I parked the bakkie in the driveway which was sloped down towards his garage. I was half-way to the front door when I heard a noise and I suddenly realised that my vehicle was slowly moving down towards the garage which housed a beautiful large, expensive looking bakkie-type vehicle which was facing my oncoming vehicle. I knew I would not make it to the driver’s side fast enough to put my foot on the brake so thought I would try a bit of brute force. Unfortunately brute force was of no use whatsoever as the bakkie carried on pushing me back-

wards. Eventually I was jammed between the two vehicles and there was no way I could get out. My belly-button felt as though it was practically touching my spine. “Help me” I screeched assuming that the home owners would rush to my aid. It appeared that nobody was at home so I screeched louder and louder. Eventually a head popped over the wall from the neighbour’s house. A lady I knew quite well – she was a regular customer. That was the good news – the bad news was that her husband was working in North Africa and she didn’t think she would be able to push the bakkies apart. Her idea was that she should get into my bakkie and start it up and reverse. I shuddered at the thought – old bakkies do not slide into reverse – they jolt. I had visions of my spine and belly-button fusing permanently. After some deliberation and discovering that none of the immediate neighbours appeared to be at home it was decided that Maia would attempt to push my vehicle backwards. How on earth a woman in her sixties who was less than 5ft tall managed to push sufficiently for me to slide to the ground is still a miracle. I lay on the ground with excruciating pain from my pelvis to my ankles whilst Maia contacted my husband and my doctor. Fortunately for me I had been a patient for more than twenty years and my doctor arrived in no time at all and said how fortunate it was that this incident had taken place only 200 metres from the hospital gate. He phoned the hospital and told them to send an ambulance. Half an hour went by – no ambulance – he made another call – ambulance was lost. Maybe it was at the police station – they were searching. Darkness descended and we heard the sound of a siren – it was indeed the ambulance which went straight past us and we heard it turning into the hospital grounds. My doc phoned the hospital again – good news – the ambulance had been found and was on its way. Presumably the driver did not understood two hundred metres because this time the ambulance went hurtling past with sirens blazing and disappeared into the night. Another call and eventually the ambulance did arrive and I was taken to hospital. A dollop of morphine and a few x-rays later the doctor told me how fortunate I was – my pelvis was still intact and although there was a lot of bruising and swelling I appeared to be okay but I would have to spend the night in

hospital so I could be checked in the morning. I was happy for numerous reasons – I was expecting my daughter and grandsons to arrive from Bahrain the following week and the last thing I needed was to be crippled. I spent the next few days hobbling around with technicolor legs and buttocks but otherwise well. It was four days after the incident and my husband was leaving early in the morning to go to Johannesburg to pick up my daughter and grandsons who were arriving that afternoon. He would be bringing them back the following day. My leg had swollen during the night and it looked as though I was suffering from a severe case of elephantiasis. I saw my doc directly after work that afternoon and he said that I obviously had a haematoma and I would need a small operation which could be performed early the next morning at the local hospital. For those who don’t remember 2007 was the year of the first load shedding and my doc met me with the news that the hospital back-up generator was out of order and if there was unscheduled load shedding it could be a problem if we were in the middle of an operation. Did I mind having a local anaesthetic” An anaesthetic is an anaesthetic as far as I am concerned and I lay back on the operating table whilst my doc (bless his heart) gave me a running commentary on what he was doing. Suddenly he stopped – it was not a haematoma – it was fibrous tissue. Since I didn’t know the difference it really didn’t bother me, until he removed a large lump of what looked like fatty mince from my leg and waved it in front of my nose. Two handfuls later, during which time he stopped to tell me that what he had removed could fill a coke can, the anaesthetic wore off and I let out a yelp. He told me he could not give me a lot more local so I should grit my teeth and he would go as fast as he could. Suffice to say that the local wore off before the stitching began – the nurse standing next to me probably still has the scars left by my fingernails which were dug into her palms. A comedy of errors? Depends on which way you look at it! - A tired old lady forgetting to put on her handbrake whilst on a slope - A hospital losing its ambulance - An ambulance driver not understanding two hundred metres - My doctor thinking that we were fortunate that the incident had taken place so close to the hospital.

Trueman decimates Trichardts ■ Roelof de Jonge

The last matches of the Premier League 50 overs cricket league for Limpopo clubs were concluded on Sunday the 1st of December. The 2019/2020 season will commence on Sunday the 12th of January next year. Whilst the side from Nkowankowa enjoyed a bit of an early rest having a bye, the teams of Hornbills Cricket Club and Nashua Aces Cricket Club celebrated dominant victories. Hornbills took on Giyani and Aces played away against Louis Trichardt. Both the batting line-ups from Hornbills and Aces posted significant scores on the boards for their sides to defend. But it was in the bowling departments especially that completely and utterly dismembered their opposition. For the Aces team, young strike-bowler Lance Trueman stole the show with some immaculate figures. In just 5.1 overs, Trueman’s sterling bowling landed him eight wickets for just 6 runs (8/6) with an economy rate of 1.2 which included

two maiden overs. Aces team mate Jaco Calitz claimed the other wicket in his spell of five overs. The mighty Aces were sent in to bat first after winning the toss and posted 200 runs to defend against Louis Trichardt. The batsmen of Aces who contributed in runs were Erik Viljoen (25), Ntokozo Mahlaba (31), Lance Trueman (11), Armand Pansegrouw (16), Tiaan Enslin (24) and Louis Botha (39). Louis Trichardt added 42 extras which did not help their cause. With Trueman truly on form with the ball in hand, Louis Trichardt just had no answers as they were sent back for an early shower for a mere 19 runs all out. The Hornbills were up against the side of Giyani Cricket Club which was played at the Louis Trichardt Oval. After winning the toss and electing to send Giyani in to field, the Hornbills posted 256 runs all out in 45.1 overs. The players who made significant contributions with the bat were Ryan Atkinson (22), Paul Hawken (55), Richard Atherstone (43), Stebian van der Walt (21), Garth Lancefield (20) and Wian Fourie (49). In reply, Giyani’s batsmen faltered due to some formidable bowling from the Hornbills and were all out for just 107 runs. Richard Atherstone caused the most damage with the ball for the Hornbills with his bowling figures of 5/24 in his 10 overs spell which included three maiden overs. The other Hornbill bowlers who also claimed Giyani scalps were Emile Kruger, Wian Fourie, Adolf Smith and Stebian van der Walt. The Tzaneen Phoenix Cricket Club’s Premier League side travelled to Polokwane Cricket Club’s B Oval where they faced Seshego. The hosts won the toss and elected to send the Phoenix batsmen in to bat first. The visitors were restricted to 157 runs. The batsmen from Tzaneen who contributed runs were André de Beer (12), Gideon Swanepoel (19), Edward Clements

Erick Viljoen

Tiaan Enslin

Michael Mahlaba

Lance Trueman

(47), Maurits Perold (19), Jan Bormans (14, not out) and Bernard Pretorius. It took just one of the Seshego batting openers to take the victory away from the Tzaneen Phoenix side. Seshego’s Nduvho Maphidhi scored 76 runs from 72 balls, not out, to help steer his side to a one run victory. The bowlers who claimed wickets for Tzaneen Phoenix were Cobus Geldenhuys (two wickets) with André de Beer, Rainart Schoonbee and Edward Clements in support who took one wicket each. On Friday the 29th of November the Limpopo Impala rural cricket team played a one day match against the rural side of Gauteng Lions in Polokwane. The Limpopo Impala team did well to beat their rivals by six wickets. The Impala’s won the toss and elected to field first. Limpopo’s bowlers piled on the pressure from the word go with the Gauteng Lions batsmen having a struggle to put any significant score on the board. The only notable scores by the Lions came from their middle-order batsmen with Shaylen Pillay on 59 from 90 balls and Codi Yusuf who made 45 from 75 balls. Pillay lost his wicket to the bowling of Gerhardus Fourie caught by fellow Impala Chris Mohale. Impala’s bowler Andrew Rasemene with a caught and bowl send Yusuf back to the Lions change room. The Impala’s bowlers who claimed wickets were Andrew Rasemene (4/31 in 8 overs), Don Radebe (1/28 in 8 overs), Gerhardus Fourie (2/31 in 9.3 overs), Ben Skade (2/25 in 10 overs) and Chris Mohale (1/44 in 9 overs). In reply, the Impala’s chased than the required runs in just 33.4 overs, posting189 runs for the loss four wickets. The most notable runs scored were from batsmen Lerato Kgoatle (64 from 75 balls), Lefa Thaba (44 from 45 balls), Armand Pansegrouw (29 from 17 balls) and Impala’s captain Thomas Hobson (28 from 27 balls).
