into the surrounding neighbourhood covering one family’s property in the putrid stench of human waste for more than two weeks. The family said that they contacted the ward councilor, who in turn allegedly made some phone calls and visited the site, but to this day, there have been no response. Community activist, Edmond Mbetse, said that if the municipality does not get their ‘house’ in order he and his team will have no other choice but to pay the municipal manager a visit. “We will fill buckets with the raw sewage and go deliver it at both the mayor’s and municipal managers offices. Then we will see if they will tolerate it for at least one minute in comparison to those who have been suffering for weeks on end,” stated Mbetse. Other residents are even willing to take it as far as a legal action because they believe that this situation is bad for business. “Sewerage is a health hazard for all, and it damages the image of our so called ‘tourism town of two summers’ to a ‘Town of no tourism’,” commented a disgruntled resident. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu, said that residents need to be patient with the municipality as they are working with a reduced work force. “They should keep reporting the problems to their respective ward councillors and we will send the little skeleton team we have to go and fix the problem,” stated Mahesu.

The water and sanitation woes of a town once lauded as the jewel of Limpopo; appears endless as raw sewerage continues to flow through Phalaborwa’s streets. One of the most affected streets is Park which runs through the length of town from the entrance one side to the Kruger park on the other. As expected, the response from the crippled municipality is a generic Covid-19 cliché as they continue blaming the pandemic for the shortage of manpower to deal with the ever-increasing service delivery failures. If one ignored the claims by residents of reporting sewer-related faults to the municipality before the lockdown, it could appear as though the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s cumulative problems started all at once on the 31st of March this year. It is not only the calls by the residents and homeowners which are being ignored, by opposition Ward Councilors have also been sidelined as the DA’s Sybrandt De Beer, told Bulletin that he was aware of the sewage situation but that his calls for action have also been ignored. “I phone the technical department every day, but they take five days to respond. Essenhout and Troupand Streets were reported several times, but not attended to by the Municipal working crews,” he said. Meanwhile, in Namakgale, a burst sewer mainline spewed raw feces

Cop helps hide booze ■ Jeff Jackson Three vehicles were involved in an accident which strangely was not alcohol related but does involve alcohol. This despite the supposed ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol. Over the long weekend, on Friday evening to be precise, an apparently intoxicated driver of a blue Golf Gti attempted to make a U-turn on the KhujwanaLephepane road near the Mateu precinct. A taxi which was traveling from Tzaneen to Lephepane collided with the Golf and then smashed into a Nissan Sentra which stood parked next to the road. The taxi was allegedly full to capacity at the time of the accident and about seven of the passengers were lightly injured. Witnesses stated that while the taxi driver was contacting the taxi owner to report the accident to the police and emergency services, a white Golf arrived on scene.

This vehicle was driven by an off-duty policeman who was contacted by the driver of the GTI who caused the accident. With much haste, the policeman and the driver started offloading packs of liquor from the GTI into the officer’s vehicle after which the duo fled from the scene. When the police and emergency ambulance services eventually arrived on scene, they were only able to take down the statements of two of the drivers and various witnesses involved in the accident. Towing services arrived and towed the taxi off the scene while leaving the Nissan and the Golf at the scene. The injured were transported to hospital. There has been no feed back on what happened to the friend of the off-duty police officer. It is the first time in a decade since the completion of this road, that a taxi was involved in an accident upon it.

What Welfare?

■ Jeff Jackson

While politicians are throwing live snakes at each other over corruption the most vulnerable social services network organisations such as Childrens’ Homes, Old Age Homes and other Welfare organisations are finding it hard to cope under lockdown. This after their monthly financial allocations from the government`s Department of Social Welfare was either cut or completely discontinued. In Limpopo and Mpumalanga the monies which some of the organisations received were cut by 25 percent as of the 31st of March. This was done without consultation and has led to many organizations now facing a total collapse. In some instances the government in Limpopo ordered these organisations to use 10 or 15 percent of the allocations to buy Personal Protection Equipment which were supposed to be supplied by government for free. In a report compiled by Lisa Vetten

Stand van Damme Dam Levels

of the Carework Campaign and Margareth Grobelaar of the National Coalition of Social Services (sent to the Department of Social Development), most organisations, after they had paid for necessities such as electricity, are left with no funds at all with which to run the organisations. This is coupled with most businesses facing hard times making them unable to continue supporting the welfare networks. Voluntary employees who were receiving stipends had since March been receiving nothing. Despite the cries of the old and the frail, the Limpopo Premier’s office have done nothing other than “express concern” over the fact that there are teachers who take advantage of the school feeding programmes and take food home to their own families. During the sitting of the provincial coronavirus Command council, the premier said he was investigating the allegations. We will not be holding our breaths.

Dendron farm attackers in court ■ Roelof de Jonge & Joe Dreyer

On the 5th of August six armed men entered a farmhouse in Dendron near Bandelierskop. The farmer, Chris Joubert (62) was severely beaten and tied to a chair while his wife Leonise (61) was shot in her leg and brutally raped. His elderly mother, Betsie (98) had a gun shoved into her mouth. She defiantly dared the attackers to shoot her. This was another farm attack, one of the reported 419 so far this year alone, although the statistics vary because the crimes are not prosecuted as farm attacks, but rather armed robberies. Following the brutal attack, the gang fled the farm in the couple’s vehicle. They made off with a flatscreen television set and two hunting rifles. The police arrested three of the gang members a short while later near Polokwane after a high-speed chase and a shootout. One of the three suspects was wounded in the exchange of fire and later succumbed to his injuries. During the arrest three of the men reportedly escaped. The police recovered five stolen firearms, ammunition, and other stolen items. The two suspects appeared in the Morebeng (Soekmekaar) Magistrate’s court on the 7th of August (last week Friday). The police spokesperson for the province, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement that the suspect who was shot and later died of his wounds, was identified as 33-year old Ayanda Thwanwe from Krugersdorp in Gauteng. The other two arrested suspects are aged 29 and 38. It is reported that a fourth suspect has been arrested in the meantime. They were facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, rape, possession of stolen firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen property. A call to all members of the agricultural community was made to gather in solidarity outside the courthouse. Literally hundreds of vehicles congregated at the courthouse on Friday. Farmers from across the region as far as Hoedspruit, Mooketsi, Louis Trichardt, Ellisras, Tzaneen and Letsitele stood in protest of farm killings and support for the Joubert-family. Placards bearing slogans in protest of the senseless attacks were brandished by the majority of those in attendance. Bulletin reporter, Roelof de Jonge was in attendance and spoke to some of the farmers.

James van den Bergh, one of the conveners of Friday’s gathering, encouraged the supporters against farm attacks to stay put until the suspect’s court appearance is done. One of the young farmers started playing folk and other popular Afrikaans songs from his bakkie. “We are gathered here to show our displeasure and frustration with the situation us farmers are dealing with,” said one of the farmers. “But, when we leave here today, all that will remain is a couple of cigarette buts lying around from the people who have smoked. There won’t be any damage to any property.” Another farmer whom De Jonge interviewed said that the level of brutality that accompanies farm attacks is what separates it from the general murders (which amount to more than 21 000 annually). “Why the need for violence and torture? If these attackers really have a need worth stealing for, at least just leave the people alone in peace. There is no need for this senseless attacks especially on elderly people.” The case was postponed for further investigation and the suspects will be in court again today (Friday, 14th of August). Bulletin is currently at the scene in Soekmekaar – visit our Facebook page to stay updated with our live feeds from outside the courthouse.

Magnetite dust issues may soon be over ■ Joe Dreyer Phalaborwa’s Business Chamber headed by local businessman, Manie Kriel, seemed to have assisted Palabora Copper in reaching a viable solution to the much-publicised magnetite dust problem which has been plaguing the town for the past year. Bulletin first reported on this issue last year when some residents complained about large quantities of magnetite dust being deposited into the swimming pools and residences of neighbourhoods in town. Since then the business chamber and various other individuals have been in discussion with the mine’s management to action a plan to bring this problem to an end. The mine produces magnetite as a biproduct of the copper refining process but considering that the copper reserves at the mine have almost been depleted, magnetite has become a valuable source of income. Palabora Copper had its last meeting with the concerned community members concerning dust eminating from the mine site on the

24th of February this year. Due to the declaration of the National Disaster for COVID-19 however, these meetings were ceased until further notice and progress made by the mine was communicate to the residents via local media. In a written statement to the Business Chamber, Palabora Copper said that dust control during the lockdown was an issue, but one which they will now be addressing. The mining industry was granted permission to resume activities under reduced capacity in April 2020. “Palabora Copper resumed the Magnetite, Vermiculite and Logistics Operations whilst the Copper Operations remain under care and maintenance until further notice. For most of Lockdown level 5 no dust control activities continued until operations resumed late April 2020. Due to very little tailings having been produced since March 2020, the copper tailings storage facilities (TSFs) have dried out considerably. These circumstances have resulted in many of the active and inactive areas drying out and acting as dust sources.” The mine has, since the resumption of its activities, implemented various measures to combat the spread of the dust. These were listed in the written response and include the treatment of permanent haulroads with a bitumen-based dust suppressant on a weekly basis and other haulroads and loading areas kept wet with water throughout the day. “Magnetite operations acquired the services of additional earth moving equipment in May 2020 to flatten inaccessible areas on the magnetite stockpile. This had made it possible to apply chemical dust suppressant on inactive areas that have not been previously treated within the past 6 months,” the statement read. “The chemical dust suppressant forms a crust by binding dust particles and thereby reducing the amount of dust particles from

being suspended into the atmosphere with strong winds exceeding 7 metres per second. 11. Aerial application of a chemical dust suppressant was considered but proved impractical as the volumes needed to be applied exceeded the capabilities of a fixed-wing crop sprayer.” The full document detailing all the listed countermeasures can be obtained from the offices of the Phalaborwa Chamber of Business or through contacting Manie Kriel directly. The document lists some promising successes in the fight to curb the spreading of the dust and these include Gravimetric samples, normally taken to determine occupational exposure to dust in the workplace, which were taken at four locations on the boundary of Phalaborwa town in February this year. The analysis of these samples are in progress at a laboratory in Gauteng. The results are expected late August. “Four additional dust fallout monitoring sites where identified for Phalaborwa town. Three gauges were placed in mid-July with the fourth to be placed shortly. There are now nine dust fallout monitoring sites within the Phalaborwa town,” the mine said. “The Air Quality model for Vermiculite was also finalised and the Air Quality model for the Copper Stream, which includes Magnetite, is in final draft stage. Those interested to read these reports can request soft copies by sending an e-mail to environment@palabora.co.za Kriel said that the Phalaborwa chamber of business is satisfied that Palabora Copper was doing everything in their power to curb the spread of the dust from their sites, and that through partnership with the town’s private business sector would find a workable solution. “You know, we have been having these discussion with the management of the mine since last year when the issue of the dust was first raised by one of our residents. They have been very accomodating and have been keeping us in the loop on their progress in this matter. We do not want to see the mine shutting down its operations. Not at all. That would mean certain death for this town as the mine employs close to 3500 people. We will help them work on a solution as that is in the best interest for this community.” Palabora Copper is not the only source of the pesky magnetite dust either. According to Kriel, the Phalaborwa Chamber of Business has approached Foskor mine on the issue as well and will soon be starting talks with their management on solutions as well. Bulletin will keep our readers updated on the matter as more progress is reported.

A new DAWN rises for Limpopo's women ■ Roelof de Jonge

“Limpopo is fighting a losing battle against violence specifically committed against children and women. The recent crime stats for Limpopo paints a bleak picture and shows that 3 436 cases of rape and 3 990 sexual offence cases were reported. This means that almost 10 rapes are reported daily. This despite rape being one of the most under-reported crimes in Limpopo.” The latest annual national crime stats revealed that Limpopo only has two police stations which ranked amongst the top 30 stations in

On Saturday the 8th of August, local women took part in a petition as part of the commemoration of Women’s Day and Women’s Month. This campaign was organised through the Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) and was spearheaded by DA Constituency Head and Member of Parliament, Desireé van der Walt. Saturday’s event formed part of an online petition campaign which will also be featured in several other Limpopo towns. According to Van der Walt, the purpose of this petition is to highlight the challenges women face in South Africa, not to mention the ever-growing numbers of incidents of violence against women and children. “Women’s Day pays tribute to the women of all races and backgrounds from 1956 who stood together to fight the injustices and challenges they had to face. Women of today still has to face shockingly high statistics of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Limpopo.” The 2019/2020 crime statistics revealed that Limpopo recorded 8 519 cases of crime against women with a total of 2 807 crimes against children. These appallingly high number of cases include serious crimes such as murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, assault with intent to inflict Desiree van der Walt grievous body harm and common assault.

South Africa when it came to the amount of sexual offences they dealt with. These two police stations are based in Thohoyandou (ranked 6th) and Seshego (ranked 26th). Regarding the highest number of rape cases, three of Limpopo’s police stations featured again amongst the top 30 in the country. With a staggering 225 cases in total per annum, Thohoyandou slots into fifth place. In the 24th place on the list with 154 cases is Giyani with Mankweng following not further down on the list in 30th place with 149 reported cases. “The high number of sexual crimes in Limpopo is also worrying considering the shortage of rape kits and the lack of sensitivity and training in the police service that has to deal with victims of sexual crimes, she added. “The fact that there are only 73 victim empowerment centres in the province shows a lack of support and political will to seriously address GBV. The problem is further compounded by the fact that these centres have experienced a 50 percent cut in funding for the current financial year by the Limpopo Department of Social Development.” It is for this reason that DAWN is committed to ensure that the petition is submitted to the provincial and national government to ensure they address this culture of abuse towards specifically René Pöhl women and children.

to the desperate need for Healthcare among farm workers and other vulnerable populations in the greater Hoedspruit area. The organization serves about 60 000 people annually which includes direct and indirect beneficiaries. Hlokomela largely serves the vulnerable of society such as farm workers, game lodge employees, migrant labourers and sex workers in the Mopani district of Limpopo. The programme offers interventions to reduce HIV, TB and STI's, a Victim Empowerment Project, a women's clinic, social programmes to reduce Gender-Based Violence and assisting sex workers. “DAWN recognises the immense contribution Christine Du Preez and Hlokomela are making in bringing about change that is inspiring and empowers other women and the community at large in the greater Hoedspruit area, Van der Walt said. “We remain committed to prioritising the fight towards the eradication of Gender-Based Violence and other issues affecting women today, while also ensuring that all women have equal access to social and economic opportunities.”

In sticking to the fight to eradicate gender-based violence specifically against women and children, The Democratic Alliance Women's Network (DAWN) in Limpopo represented by their Provincial Chairperson Desiree Van der Walt, honoured the Hlokomela organisation and its founder, DA councillor Christine Du Preez on Tuesday as part of commemorating women's day. DAWN awarded them with the Women’s Day Award to acknowledge their hard work and commitment as well as the vital role they played in addressing societal issues that largely affect women in the Mopani District. Previous recipients of the DAWN Award were Kgothatso Montjane, a Limpopo-born wheelchair tennis star and first black South African to compete at Wimbledon (2018) and Beka Ntsanwisi and grannies soccer team Vakhegula Vakhegula, a Limpopo-based soccer team consisting of grandmothers in 2019 Hlokomela was established in 2005 in response

In an effort to raise awareness and to protect communities around Phalaborwa from the dreadful Coronavirus, the Transformation, Stakeholder Engagement and Internal Communications Department in conjunction with the ‘COVID-19 Busters’ at Palabora Mining Company (PMC) visited the local taxi rank earlier this month. The aim of the visit according to PMC was to distribute informational flyers that speak on preventative measures as well as reminding the public on the government message of basic hygiene practice during the pandemic and to re-fill sanitising bottles for taxi drivers, street hawkers and food vendors with a 70% alcohol base sanitising product. “It is a known fact that, it takes a longer period to eliminate a pandemic of Covid-19 magnitude

from the world. Therefore, we cannot afford to wait until the storm calms down, but we should have the situation under control through practicing safe behaviours to live with the virus. Like any other virus, ‘prevention is better than cure’,” stated the Manager of Transformation, Stakeholder Engagement and Internal Communications, Abby Ledwaba. He said that frequent handwashes for 20 seconds or using hand sanitisers product that is at least 70% alcohol based, social distancing, and the wearing of face masks every time a person is in a public place are some of the efforts people should practice in order to control the spread of Coronavirus in the absence of an approved vaccine. Ray Motubatse and Grace Netshiozwi who were both representing Phalaborwa Taxi Association and Lulekani Taxi Association respectively, were excited to receive re-fills from PMC personnel.

Many locals and taxi drivers stood in the line to re-fill empty bottles of sanitisers at local taxi rank

What a beautiful month we are in. The sun is shining and we can put away the winter clothes again… well, kinda. But, thank you, Universe! There are a few things that I find very concerning, especially during the time we find ourselves in and it frustrates me that it appears most people seemingly do not understand the massive impact certain actions will inevitably have on our future. I am no supporter of feminism; I do not agree with any of it. Why would women want to be equal to men anyway? Personally, I love being a woman and I love doing woman-things, and I love having VC_MyNotebook_Print_20x63mm.pdf 1 2020/08/12 09:48 a man that does man-things. Life as it is, is hard enough, why make it any harder by fighting the men we love! And degrading them, disrespecting them and wanting to take their rights away? But what I do support whole-heartedly, is the move against Gender-based violence. Celebrate Women’s Month with Understand this: “gender” does not mean “women”. It means any violence perpetrated by one Red deals that come with a FREE Woolworths voucher valued at R500** and 20GB Once-off Data gender against another simply because of the gender differences. There are many men that suffer For a woman who physical and mental abuse at the hands of women, but we don’t know about that because we knows her worth teach our sons that men don’t cry. That is wrong and should be addressed. I just don’t currently know how to address it and so I will focus on changing that which I know I can change right now – violence against vulnerable women and children. It is getting out of hand and no amount of education alone is going to change this culture. Because it is a culture and until that is changed, it won’t. At this very moment violence against women and children is at its worst and I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of this government. The lockdown has forced men and women to stay confined in one house with their children for four months now. Many without an income and continuous daily bombardment by corporate media driving the fear of the “invisible enemy”. Children stuck at home without the stimulation of their peers or the classroom and daily picking up on the frustrations and the fears of their parents. Artisans and physical labourers forced to stay home without work adds to the frustration. And then. You took away their cigarettes and their alcohol. You, Dlamini-Zuma, you are to blame. You have wrought this upon your sisters and our children. You will not be forgiven, because forgiveness, like respect, is earned. And then you have the farm murders, the brutality of these attacks are sad and worrying. What have we become as humans? That is no human act. You do not have to cut someone open to get a cellphone or rape a mother and torture parents in front of their children because you are hungry or need money. If you are hungry, ask. If you need money, ask. Wouldn’t it be great if the law were different? What if your punishment was the same as the crime you committed? Maybe then people would stop hurting other people and love a little more. Joe has a saying – he has a few, but one in particular, resonates here – “I don’t expect everyone to love everyone. But what if we hated each other just a little less?” Seeing that it is woman’s month; here is your challenge - take back the responsibility of supporting our men. Take care of them as they take care of you. Stand alongside our men and fight for our rights not as women or as men, but as humans. They need us, and whether you like it or not, we need them too. You cannot fight the men you feel should be protecting you, nor should they fight the women they need to be protecting. Stop playing the victim if something does not go your way and take responsibility for your actions. This does not mean you deserved that black eye, not at all, it means you need to do something to prevent that. If your partner treats you like trash, leave. Take your stuff and leave before it is too late. If you are in an abusive relationship, speak to someone about it and seek help. Do it secretively if you must - but do it. Seek counselling if you feel you can save the relationship, if you can’t, leave. Your life is your most precious asset and you need to protect it for your own survival. Whatever you do, do not stay “for the kids” because you are not doing them any favours either. Take the kids and leave. If your neighbours or fellow congregants are going to judge you, let them – they already are, in anyway so why should it matter? And this is relevant to my sisters and our men, equally. Men, we know you can handle a lot, because you do, but when it gets to the point where you feel you just can’t anymore, speak up. If you feel you can’t speak to us, call a buddy, arrange a day at the dam or a weekend in the bush. Get out of the house for a bit and go do your man-things with the guys. Take it from me, your woman won’t hold it against you – she likely needs the breather too. Communicate. If you are like me, and struggle to put into words what you have on your heart, then write it on a piece of paper and leave it on her pillow. Or send her a WhatsApp, or an email, or send her a song that explains what you’re going through. We should not fight with our partners, but rather for them. We should have a Partners Month, or Partners Day. But seeing as how we don’t, during this Women’s Month, I want each of you ladies to know that you are incredible and you have done a remarkable job of keeping your shit together during house arrest, without wine, without smokes, without ladies nights and without schools. Keep the lipstick red, the mascara flawless and those heels clicking. P.S. To our teachers, we love you so much it borders on the obscene. 5

Smooth auto shifting for new X-Rider

Isuzu added an automatic version of the D-MAX Double Cab’s special edition X-Rider model line-up.

■ Roelof de Jonge The X-Rider nameplate has become quite a popular model within the Isuzu D-MAX line-up in this marque’s effort to keep up with the incredibly competitive premium sector light commercial vehicle or rather bakkie market in South Africa. This year Isuzu is taking things further by adding an automatic version of the D-MAX Double Cab’s special edition of the X-Rider model line-up. Until now Isuzu have only offered the X-Rider as a midrange vehicle available with the 100kW 2.5 litre engine. The X-Rider provides for an imposing presence with its rugged and sporty looks which sets it apart from its other D-MAX stable mates. The new added three-litre X-Rider Automatic is powered by the familiar four-cylinder turbo diesel engine from Isuzu that produces 130kW. The power unit is matched with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The maximum power output can be reached from as low as 3 600rpm, with a torque output of 380Nm between 1 800 and

Equestrians back in the saddle ■ Roelof de Jonge

Nellie Terwey

Krisitin Morley

After months of not being able to compete in any form of equestrian competitions due to the lockdown regulations imposed by the national government, horse riders from Tzaneen and Hoedspruit ecstatically competed in the African Dream Horse Training Show. “It was great to see the riders and their horses in action again. And to be able to organise an event for once, especially after the Covid-19 lockdown regulations,” said Shannon Hancock, organiser of the African Dream Horse Training Show. “We did not advocate ahead of the time that we were planning a training show, we feared that because of the lockdown level 3 regulations it might be prohibited. But after this weekend it was clear that the equestrian fraternity knows how to keep to the imposed regulations.” And the horse riders – likely their trusty steeds equally – revelled in the arena. Some of the riders from local schools both public and private, performed exceptionally well during the show. Two of Pfunanane Equestrian team’s riders, Eliana Terwey and Leah DeMeyer (Duiwelskloof Primary) competed in the ground poles and 20cm classes on ‘Coco Pop’, winning many rosettes. Grace RamokgolaTerwey rode her young horse ‘Two of a Kind’ in the 70cm classes, either winning or achieving a second place in every class. Nellie Terwey challenged herself on ‘Davenport Pavlova’ in the 80 and 90 cm classes, with beautiful rounds and several first and second place finishes. The school wished to thank their coach, Beverly Jackman from JB Equestrian, and Erin Vogler for the beautiful photos. “We just had to get started again. We could just not wait any longer. We had limited entries for the event and we seriously enforced all health protocols associated with the level three regulations. The riders who competed over the weekend entered individually and presented their respective stables. The next equestrian event, with the date still to be confirmed, will be held in December at the Blouberg Stables near Vivo.”
