Marietjie Harmse, ‘n lid van die Merensky Boogskietklub en ‘n oudPlasie-ouer, is gekies om Suid-Afrika by die Wêreld Boogskietkampioenskappe in Augustus in Hongarye te verteenwoordig. Sy het boogskiet in haar bloed en is reeds van 2009 af by die Merensky Boogskietklub as afrigter en organiseerder betrokke. Sy is ook die voorsitter van Limpopo Boogskiet. Om vir die SA’s te kwalifiseer, moes sy reeds in 2014 nasionale kleure verwerf, en sy moes daarna binne twaalf maande vyf maal nasionaalkwalifiserende tellings behaal. Die topdrie deelnemers in elke kategorie is gekies en Marietjie is die enigste vrou in die land wat wel vir die groen en goud kon kwalifiseer.

Vlieg het tussen ‘n klomp snobs grootgeword. Hy weet dus hoe dit is, hoe hulle is en hoe dit is om nie een van hulle te wees nie. As gevolg daarvan het hy homself belowe om nooit ooit soos hulle te wees of een van hulle te word nie. Vlieg neig egter op twee terreine na snobgedrag en is deurentyd in ‘n stryd gewikkel om die versoekings te weerstaan. Met een daarvan probeer hy regtig hard. Vlieg hou nie van stupidgeit nie, of noem dit eerder ‘n gebrek aan common sense. Miskien is dit waarmee hy homself teen die regte snobs beskerm het, altyd homself vertel dat hy ‘n bietjie slimmer as hulle was. Hy was waarskynlik! Hy probeer dus elke dag om nie ‘n intellektuele snob te wees nie en probeer ander se stupidgeit maar oorsien. Met die ander een het hy egter die stryd gewonne gegee en erken openlik dat hy ‘n

snob is. Miskien spruit dit uit sy oupa aan moederskant se aftree-stokperdjie om ‘n ware winskopiejagter te gewees het. Miskien het dit te doen met sy vrees vir ‘n aambei-operasie. Maar Vlieg is tot sy eie teleurstelling en verontwaardiging ‘n toiletpapiersnob! Oupa het die hele stad vol gery agter winskopies aan, waarskynlik meer aan brandstof bestee as wat hy met sy winskopies bespaar het, maar dit het hom darem soggens besig gehou, terwyl hy gewag het vir die vliegtuig om oor te gaan. Dan het hy nie net vir homself gekoop nie, maar sommer vir die hele familie ook, waaronder ook vir Vlieg se maaiershuis. Vlieg dink die toiletpapier wat oupa altyd daar aangebring het was gemaak van herwonne toiletpapier wat hulle in die siwwe by die sewerageplaas opgevang het, en dit net laat uitdroog en platgestryk het. As daar nie reeds gate in was nie, het ‘n afveevinger sommer met die eerste veeg al dwarsdeur die papier beland waar dit nie hoort nie. G’n wonder Vlieg het aambeie nie. Vlieg koop dus, in tere nagedagtenis aan oupa, nie sommer enige winskopies nie, wat nog toiletpapier. Dubbellaag, ekstrasag, lekkerruik, satynafwerking. Niks minder nie, niks anders nie, en Vlieg sal nie sommer elders op ‘n troon gaan sit as dit nie beskik-

baar is nie. Vlieg sal eerder afskeep op kos as om ander toiletpapier te koop. Wat Vlieg natuurlik simpatiek maak teenoor ander mense wat nie hierdie luukse kan bekostig nie. Vlieg het al gehoor van koerantpapier en mieliestronke. Hy kan dit homself nie voorstel nie. En ten spyte van die onlangse onverdiende verhogings in die president en sy kaders se reeds astronomiese salarisse, blyk dit dat selfs hulle nie ordentlike toiletpapier kan bekostig nie. Ten spyte van al die ander luukshede wat hulle kan bekostig, met ons geld, soos tweehonderdensestigmiljoenrandstatte, groot swart motors met blou ligte, oorsese vakansies, Rolex-horlosies, Louis Vitone-handsakke en Jimmy Choo-skoene, vee hulle hulle sommer aan alles af! Soos die Openbare Beskermer, die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag, die Valke, die Ouditeur-Generaal, hulle eie Nasionale Uitvoerende Komitee en deesdae ook die land se hoogste gesag, die howe. Sommer internasionale howe ook. Om nie van die Grondwet te praat nie. Alles gereduseer tot toiletpapier. Maar wees gerus, hul aambeie het begin bloei en hopelik vee hulle hulle met hulle selfvoldane bespotlikheid daaraan ook af! Vlieg vermoed hulle gaan een van die dae met hul vingers in ‘n stinkplek beland!

Storm weather survivors still living in tents Storm weather survivors in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s jurisdiction are at wits’ end after the municipality promised to build them RDP houses, but never showed up after they had lost their houses and belongings due to storm weather a number of years ago. We recently visited 71-year-old Ms Masaswibona Grace Makamu in Petanenge Village (near Nkowankowa), who says she has been living in a tent since her house collapsed and her furniture was destroyed during heavy storm weather in 2012. Makamu says she was given the tent by the GTM, which sent representatives to her house accompanied by Mayor Dikeledi Mmetle imMakamu and her family were given this tent in 2012, after their house mediately after her house was destroyed. collapsed during a storm “They promised to build me an RDP house and even sent materials for the construction, but it’s been three years since and I’m still living in a tent,” she told Bulletin. The 71-yearold, who is taking care of her five orphaned grandchildren between the ages of six and 22, says the municipality only built her an outside toilet. The municipality has since retrieved the material from her place and the family is still waiting for the promised house.

“There is nothing else I can do. We only live from the government grants,” she said. Makamu and her grandchildren are not the only ones living in tents while waiting for the municipality’s promised RDP houses in the area. The Bulletin came across other tents similar to Makamu’s handed out by the municipality after residents had their own houses destroyed from disastrous weather conditions. In some areas, residents are said to have been living in tents for up to fifteen years. The GTM’s communications manager, Mr Neville Ndlala, says the municipality is working on building emergency houses to people affected by disastrous weather conditions. “Our project of building emergency RDP houses was halted when provincial government departments were under administration because of financial mismanagement, but we have resumed the project,” Ndlala told Bulletin and promised to look into the Petanenge situation. In another statement to our enquiries, Ndlala said, “She is part of the block projects. These are projects that were abandoned by contractors a few years ago. There has to be an allocation for her ward in order for a new contractor to build her a house. There are hundreds of beneficiaries who have not seen their house due to contractors not finishing the houses. The GTM provided tents as a temporary relief to residents who lost their houses due to storm or any natural disaster or accidents. The GTM through the mayor has been engaging with the MEC for Coghsta to speed up the allocation for the block projects.” — Joy Mojela

Employers to pay for injured workers Employers will in future be liable for all costs regarding the treatment of employees injured on duty (COID) by medical doctors or other service providers associated with Mediclinic Tzaneen, due to non-payment of accounts by the Compensation Fund. This was made clear to employers and business people on Friday by the chairman of Mediclinic’s board of directors, dr Ig van Rensburg, after explaining their woes with the workmen’s compensation office. They have an outstanding ledger of R3,2 m and the majority of the risk lies with four medical practices in Tzaneen. Van Rensburg said the Compensation Fund is by no means bankrupt as alleged and according to their 2014 financial results have assets worth R53 billion. He said the situation is unacceptable as the service providers cannot carry all the risk and practices are put under financial pressure. Mediclinic Tzaneen will continue to treat patients injured on duty and submit the accounts to the Compensation Fund as before, but the medical service providers are independent and only have admission rights to the facility. They will no longer claim payment from the Fund. They include the general practitioners, specialists, anaesthesiologist, radiology department, pathology, occupational therapist, physiotherapist and others.

Refusal to treat COID patients will have a negative impact on Mediclinic with a potential to alienate the community. It could also expose medical service providers as unethical, with the potential of negligence claims. According to Van Rensburg injured employees are gaining the most as they are getting proper medical treatment, while employers are only left with the necessary administration but no financial loss. Therefore employers will take risk for their own workmen as service providers cannot take the risk for all employers. He concluded that once the Fund’s system is proven to work and payments will be fast tracked, the situation will be revisited. He also confirmed that employers will be assisted with the completion of the necessary forms and reports to enable them to claim payment from the Fund themselves. —Louis Roux

God-forsaken and abandoned

The Limpopo department of education says it had no idea about its vehicle that seems to be stranded in Agatha Street,Tzaneen. Bulletin contacted the department after it received information that a blue VW Polo belonging to the department seems to have been abandoned about two weeks ago. According to a manager at the VW dealership (Lannie Motors), two ladies approached the dealership asking for assistance with the vehicle. “When we told them the vehicle had overheated and needs to be fixed, they gave us the number of a “department supervisor” to call, as they could not deal with the mat-

ter,” he told Bulletin. The supervisor was called and the problem explained. He then said the department does not have money to fix the car. The ladies then went back to the car, locked it and “disappeared”, leaving it in the street outside the dealership. The department’s manager of communications, Mr BN Rasila, says the department will have to investigate about the vehicle as it had not been formally informed. “It is not proper for any state property to be left unattended,” he added. He didn’t want to be drawn into a discussion about the obvious lack of managing government vehicles.

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with the power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have the power, together with all the Lord’s people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” How often do we as Christians pray for the Church, not only for our specific denomination but also for all other denominations? Are we not perhaps selfish with our prayers, praying for only that which concerns us personally? Universal prayer is need to bring about change, not only in our own lives, but also in the lives of others. relying on God’s promises to heal us if we truly

Dit is natuurlik geen goeie teken nie, want terwyl volkome harmonie tussen onderdaan en regering nie moontlik is en nêrens bestaan nie, is ‘n totale gebrek aan harmonie tussen regering en onderdaan gevaarlik; dit bied die vrugbaarste teelaarde denkbaar vir anargie. Ons beleef in elk geval reeds ‘n lae intensiteit toestand van anargie, wat al selfs in die land se hoogste raadsaal tot gewelddadige optrede gelei het. Terwyl dit uiters belangrik is dat die GTM hul sake orden en hul prioriteite netjies rangskik, is daar duidelik min hoop by die onderdane. Vandaar ook dat die GTM se raad erg verdeeld is (wat natuurlik ontken word). As die raad weet waarheen hulle op pad is en hoe hulle daar wil kom, sal dit help om ‘n ineenstorting van die GTM te verhoed. Die uurglas loop egter vinnig leeg en diesulke optrede moet versnel word.

Emosionele intelligensie Beter liggaamlike gesondheid, beter akademiese prestasie, minder gedragsprobleme, meer positiewe gevoelens, meer respek vir ander se gevoelens, waarde en persepsies, ‘n gesonde gevoel van eiewaarde, beter selfhandhawing, beter weerstand teen geweld, alkohol, dwelms ensovoorts. Kinders wat deure klap of vloek en dus nie beheer oor hul emosies toon nie, ontlok negatiewe reaksies by ander mense. Dié negatiewe reaksies veroorsaak ‘n verlaagde gevoel van eiewaarde en leervermoë by die kind. Kinders wat hul emosies kan beheer, kry simpatie en positiewe reaksies by ander, wat die kind se leervermoë verbeter. Kinders wil belangrik voel, gehoor, beskerm, aanvaar en liefgehê word. As kinders se behoeftes nie tuis vervul word nie, wend hulle hulle tot ander opsies om hul behoeftes te vervul, deur byvoorbeeld by bendes aan te sluit.

Pro-lifers, where are you? This was the question I kept asking when the terminally ill former advocate applied to the High Court in Pretoria for his doctor to assist him in dying a few months ago. Okay, let me be clear. This is not to say I am against the former advocate’s application, or the High Court’s decision thereof. I am rather indifferent to the matter, as I find both my life experience and perhaps intellectual understanding lacking in regard. However, I did expect one group of people to stand in great opposition towards such a request and ruling. Pro-lifers are essentially a group of activists who say they are against abortion or rather, a woman’s choice of action when she finds herself pregnant, in favour of the unborn baby’s life. In many cities across the world (even in our country), they often protest or campaign outside abortion clinics to stop women from terminating their unwanted/inconvenient pregnancies. They call themselves pro-lifers, which is why I feel the

Thus encouraging others to pray also or are you just going to pray the same way as you always have?

need to point out their hypocrisy, because they are for one, not for all life. The above case of the former advocate’s application is one example. Again, my beef here is not with the advocate’s application, but the people whose apparent silence on it was probably for the best. Pro-lifers are also obviously not for the life of the mother. Their insistence on ignoring the different situations in which women find themselves (sometimes helplessly) due to the nature of their reproductive organs and how it often affects their lives (as well as their young ones’) speaks for itself. Hope and hard work do not always cure poverty. Pro-lifers are arguably not even for the life of the unborn baby once it is born. The world, I know at least our coun-

try, is facing a high rate of child abandonment. The rate of adoption is also reportedly decreasing. In other words, prolifers do not even take care of the babies they went out of their ways to see born. They truly just look away (one can argue) after the unborn babies are born. In countries that still have the death penalty, pro-lifers, from my observation, seem not as loud against it, if they are at all against it. I have even heard some pro-lifers condemn abortion while defending the death penalty, or vice versa. Do note, my above description of pro-lifers as activists is not exclusive to the people who stand outside abortion clinics and scare away young women. It includes the people who mutter abortion is murder to punish young women from having sex, the men who perhaps should not even speak on the matter and those who shame those who find themselves in such predicaments. All in all, pro-lifers should seriously stop calling themselves pro-lifers. Not only is it deceptive. It is also obviously untrue. They should go ahead and say what they are truly against, namely women, women’s rights, women’s freedom, women breathing... basically everything woman.

Manhunt for murderers The Police in Letsitele are looking for the people who hijacked, shot and killed a male motorist. The body of the motorist was found with multiple gunshot wounds lying alongside a road near Runnymede Village outside Letsitele. His vehicle was later discovered in Pretoria. The motive behind the killing is suspected to be hijacking. The deceased has been identified as Mosa Selowa (31) from Runnymede. The SAPS Tzaneen Cluster Task team, in conjunction with Crime Intelligence, made major breakthroughs and arrested a number of dangerous criminals. At Metz in Sekororo, a 29-year-old man was arrested for a series of robberies. A firearm and suspected stolen items were found in his possession. His mother was also arrested for defeating the ends of justice by hiding some of the stolen items, as well as the suspect. Meanwhile, two men aged 28 and 38 were arrested for robberies in and around Rwanda Village in N’wamitwa. And at Dan Village outside Nkowankowa, a 45-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man were arrested for a series of stock theft incidents in and around the area. People with information about illegal firearms, drugs, dagga, stolen items (including vehicles) and wanted suspects should contact the Cluster Commander,

Man arrested for raping his daughter A 35-year-old man was arrested at Turkey Village, Maake, for allegedly raping his thirteen-year-old daughter since March. Social workers heard of this and reported it to the police. The man was arrested and will appear in court on a charge of rape.

A young lady’s well-being is scuppered

A freak accident three years ago has changed a young lady’s life and the ordeal is not yet over. Ms Angelique Engelbrecht (19) works at Cupcakes and Couture in Tzaneen. She walks oddly with her right foot unnaturally turned out and deep scars on her one leg. Here’s her story, as told to Bulletin. Engelbrecht was seated at a heavy concrete table at a restaurant outside Tzaneen in June 2012. As she placed her hands on the table to get up, the table tipped over and she fell, trapping her right leg underneath the heavy table. It took six strong men to lift the table off her now shattered leg. She was rushed to Van Velden Hospital with a badly broken fibula. She also cut open her finger. There she received six stitches but it was a minor injury compared with the leg. Her leg was put in a cast that stopped below the knee. The injury was prevented from healing as the knee could still move because the cast didn’t cover the knee. As a result the cast was made higher three weeks later to stabilise the knee, in the hope that the injury would heal. She then moved to Polokwane. The leg had a horrible smell so she, not wanting to return to the Van Velden, took the cast off herself. The leg had not been cleaned and there was dirt and sand under the cast. The leg was infected but with care and ointment she sorted out the infection herself. She could only walk with the aid of crutches and couldn’t put any weight on her right leg. A visit to a private doctor and an X-ray re-

vealed that the fibula break had shifted even further apart. Engelbrecht was then admitted to Mankweng Hospital where she was given a bed with blood on the sheets and no pillow. She was operated on the next morning. Doctors inserted a steel pin that was too long. They removed the pin and this separated the bone even further. She was then fixed with a plate and screws in the leg and in a cast again. The leg started bleeding through the cast. She realised there was something wrong, and indeed the cut was infected. She was in Gr 11 at the time of the accident. Due to missing so much schooling she repeated Gr 11. By now she’d gained thirty kilo’s due to the forced inactivity. She was at an all-time low and this was exacerbated by the pupils at school taunting her mercilessly about her walk shouting, “Hier kom die pikkewyn.” Now her right hip and knee are causing problems because of her badly turned out foot. However, Engelbrecht is determined to sort out the mess. She began legal action against the restaurant at the beginning of this year. She’s also adopted a healthy eating programme and has started losing weight. With family backing she’s now looking at her medical options and it would seem that the best way forward is to re-break the leg, take out all the steel bits and start from scratch. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Mopani District’s water summit brought no solutions or hope In response to the water supply protests that have been taking place in the area, the Mopani District Municipality held a water summit with community stakeholders and role players to discuss how to deal with water challenges in our area. In our opinion, the summit’s resolution to only implement charges for water access for communities seems to be at best one-sided. The municipality continues to ignore inefficiencies in its water supply system, especially in rural areas, whether through pipes, contracted trucks or drilled boreholes. Bulletin recently extensively reported on the water supply protest at Muhlava area and how residents complained that not only is there no clean water access in the area, except perhaps through illegal connections, contracted trucks supply water to the area only once in a blue moon. The municipality also keeps making empty promises on installing a proper supply system for the area. The Muhlava area was not the first community to protest for water supply. Mokgoloboto residents also protested for water supply late last year, and were told the situation will be dealt with within three days, to no avail.

The women of Petanenge mistakenly approached the Greater Tzaneen Municipality topless over a year ago, in protest for clean water supply. Today, the residents are still collecting water from rivers or nearby residents. According to the municipality’s press statement report on the summit (which Bulletin published), the summit seems to have resolved nothing, at least urgent, on supplying water to communities with no (efficient) supply. In this way, the summit seems to have also undermined the urgency of clean water demand in communities where there is no supply. The summit settled for the easier issue of dealing with illegal connections, thereby blaming the communities for having no access to clean water. Other issues raised at the summit by attendants who felt were not sufficiently discussed, if at all, included: Lack of implementation on resolutions taken at previous summits; The MDM’s bill of more than R3 billion to Lepelle Northern Water; Maintenance of sanitation. — Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

Tzaneen opens its heart The department of social development has not paid social grants to Noah’s Ark Children’s Home outside Tzaneen for the past six months. The home has 35 children (ten still in nappies). French owners Sylvie and Remi Delsouiller have been using the funds meant for building extensions to feed the children. However, two weeks ago they ran out of just about everything. Four well known Tzaneen Care Group movers-and-shakers, Mss Melissa Strydom, Yolande Firaz, Halima Gouse and Gerda Drewes, got together and roped in Messrs Francois du Toit and Marnus Ras. They met with the Delsouiller couple, and established their basic needs. On Sunday (two weeks ago) the Fill-A-Trailer was set up outside Checkers at Lifestyle Centre. The community opened up its heart and purse for the welfare of the children. Runners collected funds for nappies (a very expensive necessity with about seventy used per day), people came to give donations after church in their droves, the Spur donated lots of fruit juices and shoppers gave generously, despite the fact that many had never heard of Noah’s Ark. By 13:00 the trailer plus twelve shopping trolleys were full!

Marumofase produces nice veggies

Merensky High School once again participated in the national computer talent search, a project launched by the Institute of IT Professionals of SA testing students’ logical thinking. It is also supported by the University of Cape Town and the Department of Science and Technology, and sponsored by Standard Bank. A number of pupils participated, and the following Plasies received top honours in the school: First in the senior category: Andrea Devenish (Gr12); first in the junior category: Stefan Corbett (Gr8); first in Gr 9: Carmi Venter; first in Gr 10: Casper Jordaan and first in Gr 11: Wikus van Kasterop and Eljané Uys (absent).

Marumofase Full Service School in Maake continues to sustain itself through its vegetable production. The school produces and supplies vegetables to the local community and supermarkets. It previously supplied cabbages to Tzaneen’s Spar and Boxer supermarkets. According to the school’s now retiring principal, Mr George Ramodike, the school has also been supplying its cabbages to its entire circuit, Thabina, for the past two years as requested by the National Schools Nutrition Program. The school’s cabbages, spinach and tomatoes were recently rated first grade by Mopani District’s inclusive education coordinator, Dr Helen Baloyi. The success of the school’s vegetable garden has also seen it through various competitions nationally. According to Ramodike, the school is negotiating for more land for its gardening project from the Bakgaga ba Maake Traditional Authority.

Owned by Ms Rozille and Gawie Booysen, Blue Bell consists of several businesses. Blue Bell is well known for its established guest house consisting of four rooms that can sleep eight people. The first shop is Ms Riesl Arrow’s quirky stoep décor concern called Mille Flora. With its inviting blue wooden archway, and an eclectic collection of revamped and new stoep decorations, it sets the tone for the rest of the ‘blue’ businesses. Next door is @ Blue Bell, Booysen’s clothing shop, then the Blue Bell guest cottages and then the Garden Café run by Mr Kobus Janse van Rensburg. The Garden Café offers total privacy behind a high wall. Set in a lavender and rose-filled garden, surrounded by big old trees with the sound of water from the fountain in the middle, it is a slice of paradise in the heart of Tzaneen. Strictly a day venue, Van Rensburg opens at 07:30 for breakfast, Mondays to Saturdays. Lunch is also served. The bacon, avo and haloumi is a particular lunchtime favourite as is the light yet filling spinach and feta quiche. Mr Willie Nkuna from Mamitwa Village lends dignity to the Alice in Wonderland type atmosphere. Nkuna comes from some of the best establishments in the country including the Coach House at Agatha, the Sunnyside Park Hotel and the

Sandton Sun. He’s a waiter, a barman, a wine steward and can russle up a basic meal. The nursery at one end of the garden, a joint venture between Gawie and landscape architect Ferdi Joynt, will be open for business soon. Comrades heroes from Mopani

Ballet? Nee, netbal. En laat iemand nou net weer sê netbal kan nie opwindend wees nie en is nie mooi vanuit ‘n toeskouersperspektief nie. Maar soos dit jaar na jaar gaan, suip netbal meesal aan die agterspeen, want “koning rugby” gryp mos heel vraatsig al die aandag (en geld). Tatytum Cawood van Merensky se eerste netbalspan is die speler wat hier so mooi rank en keer vir al wat sy werd is. Die einde van vanjaar se wintersport is in sig en vir die bietjie wat na die vakansie oorbly, wens ons graag al die deelnemers sukses en vreugde toe.
