IS THE EILAND ROAD SINKHOLE NOT URGENT?
On Tuesday, Bulletin visited the site of a newly formed and now fast developing sinkhole which is threatening to completely swallow up any unsuspecting motorist’s vehicle who dares cross it in the middle of the night. The Mopani District Municipality at the time said they would prioritize the repairing of the site, but two days later, nothing has been done. Read the full story on page 4 inside.

Despite regular and often prolonged period without water in certain parts of Phalaborwa town, water has been reported flowing freely down the streets daily in some residential neighbourhoods. The water crisis in Phalaborwa is bigger than the municipality’s capacity to deal with it. The old water system which every water issue is attributed to, is not being replaced or adequately repaired and according to the president of the rate payer’s association, George Hepburn, the technicians would rather temporarily fix a broken water pipe with a car tyre’s rubber tube, than follow the prescribed and approved methods. “With the river not being drenched, how does the council expect the residents to have running water in the next few weeks whilst freshwater leaks go unattended for weeks on end? It is supposed to be attended to within 24 hours, but they take literally weeks to fix it. We have more water
running down our streets than through our taps,” stated Hepburn. “These guys do not have the proper tools to fix anything and I am sure that if you look in that bakkie of theirs, you will find just a spade, a screwdriver, and a tyre rubber tube.” Hepburn told Bulletin that the Olifants river where the town’ water supply comes from, is supposed to be 8.5 meters deep and it currently is not even 2 meters deep. “Even though our dam looks full, it is very far from full and it probably has less than 10% of its holding capacity at the present moment,” he continued. “What concerns me most is that we still have areas in Ba-Phalaborwa that still do not have clean running water. Are we living in the stone age?” A greater issue is arising, and has been on the rise for many months.
Three shot in failed landgrab attempt
■ Jeff Jackson
Security guards on the farm Kalkfontein shot and wounded three members of the community which attempted to forcefully besiege the land they claim they previously owned. The incident occurred on portion 1 of the farm after the group had allegedly launched a land claim on the property which had not yet been processed. The tension between the owners of the farm and the claimants dates back to 2015 when members of the Mojapelo clan led by Morena Seaka Homeowners Association illegally occupied land and started selling stands for residential purposes to unsuspecting members of the public at exorbitant prices. They had since been ordered to vacate the land by the Polokwane High Court after the owners instituted legal action. Police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe said police investigations are continuing. “A group of unknown people went to the occupied site late on Monday to discuss issues around the land. The land is guarded by a private security company and when the group arrived, security officers allegedly denied them access and an argument ensued. In the process several shots were fired between the two groups and three people were injured.” So far 11 people were arrested in connection with the tension around the farm including the leader of the association, Ngwamaredi Franscina Mojapelo, who is
a senior member of the Mojapelo clan. The community had officially launched a land claim on the land near Dalmada, east of the city and it had not been finalised because of disputes among members of the royal family. The land is owned by Blue Dot properties who since secured a court order in the Polokwane High Court concerning the occupation of the land and it was declared that the occupation of the land was illegal and residents should vacate the land. Leaders of the clan who had sold some of the stands at R20 000 and more were arrested and charged with fraud and corruption. The tension was reportedly stirred through a WhatsApp message purportedly from the representatives of the community. The message urged residents to be prepared for a new fight against the new owners of the land. The messages also reminded those with outstanding balances to their residential sites to pay immediately and there would be no meeting contrary to fighting the rightful owners. One message read as “The new management is coming to sort this kind of things that we regard as non-existence and we see it as disturbance [to the] community.” Spokesperson for Blue Dot Properties, Ike Kekana, said the shootings happened after an armed group failed to forcefully take over the land. The 11 members of the community charged with fraud and corruption are due to appear in court by the end of March this year.

The issue of raws sewerage spilling into the streets of town through blocked manholes. This sewerage spills into the Kruger National Park. “With the next election we will change the name of this town to Poop-town as there is human waste
almost everywhere,” stated Hepburn. “We are forced to live in a town covered in excrement and on almost every street there is a problem and the only excuses there is from the municipality is that they do not have enough funds”.
Prayer against Covid ■ Jeff Jackson The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) held an online prayer session for the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic which has steadily begun to claim the lives of people in the rural areas of the province. The municipality also launched awareness campaigns through visits to the affected areas. This after the district recorded 295 Covid-19 related deaths last week. Municipal spokesperson, Odas Ngobeni said they were forced to continue with the programmes which they started last year because they realized that people were losing hope as their businesses were facing severe financial losses. “We have also noticed that in some communities shop owners are not following the regulations which include sanitizing their clients and premises and this is adding to the problems which communities are faced with.” He said that the prayer session which was held on Tuesday was attended by about fifty pastors from the Giyani area while those who could not attend, participated through various online platforms such as Facebook and Zoom. The aim of the session was to encourage residents to continue putting their faith in God to help them through the difficulties the country currently faces. Ngobeni said that the municipality will continue with its programmes which will include visiting communities such as in villages and townships. “We realised that local shops were not following Covid-regulations such as enforcing the wearing of masks and ensuring that people sanitise. We will go to those communities and loud hail that people should follow the rules.”
Biker critical after collision with truck ■ Billy Sibuyi A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision involving a truck in Phalaborwa on Tuesday morning, the 9th of February. Emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Hendrik van Eck and Hardekool Street, across from the Caltex Garage. Reports from the scene indicate that the truck was enroute from the town’s entrance and the bike was heading to the entrance from Kruger Park Spar’s side when the collision occurred. Medics assessed the scene and found that the motorcyclist, an adult male, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for further treatment. According to Sgt Elvis Mongwe of the Phalaborwa SAPS, the truck allegedly started turning from Hendrick van Eck road into Hardekool Street as the traffic light turned green.
However, as the truck was making the turn, the motorbike was approaching from the opposite direction. “The traffic light was opened for traffic to move and the truck allegedly made the turn before the motorbike could drive pass,” stated Mongwe. “At the present stage, we are not quite sure who was at fault as we were not at the scene but according to the information we received, the motorbike was right to proceed as it was his right of way, but it could have also been that the truck driver started making the turn before he saw the motorbike,” he continued. Mongwe said that the police were still investigating the incident and moreover, he confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened. At the time of going to print reports were that the biker was still in a critical condition.

Woman survives Juggernaut’s gauntlet ■ Joe Dreyer A female motorist narrowly escaped a horrific death when an out-of-control bus stampeded through Adshade Street just after 16:00 on Wednesday afternoon. The bus which is owned and managed by Risaba Bus Service (RBS) out of Mamitwa village, was coming down the steep hill past OK Sugarhill Minimark when it lost control and gained momentum as it drifted around the notoriously sharp bend opposite the police residence. A woman was heading to Sugarhill from the opposite direction and when she approached the entrance to the store’s parking lot, was startled by the blood-curdling screech of tyres and vehicle engines. “The next moment this bus was screaming down the road in my lane and heading right for my vehicle! I literally froze up and thought “this was it” when the massive vehicle miraculously brushed past, missing my tiny sedan by mere inches.” The bus crashed over the pavement at the spot where the road makes another sharp turn towards the bridge over the R71 which leads towards Minitzani Park. In the process it careened into the boundary wall at the Vermont complex where it bulldozed through the electric fence and uprooted seven trees as the driver steered the vehicle back onto the road surface. “I saw two women being flung from the vehicle just as it climbed back
onto the road before the bridge. That’s when I called my husband and alerted Deon van Tonder of the ambulance services. The bus just carried on going and swerved from left to right as the driver struggled to maintain control. I lost sight of it as it rounded the bend after the bridge.” Another witness stated that the bus charged down Adshade and the driver managed to steer it onto the grassy hill leading to the old Herofield driveway. It is here that it seemed to run out of momentum and came to a standstill before rolling backward onto the opposite pavement at Green Gables. When Bulletin arrived on scene, two women were being loaded into the ambulance and were taken to hospital. The women had allegedly been flung from the moving bus after it struck the pavement near the bridge for the second time. They suffered very minor soft tissue injuries and were visibly shocked. The bus driver was also taken to hospital for minor injuries. Miraculously no pedestrians or motorists were injured in the accident. Thankfully, the unauthorized palisade fence erected around Minitzani Park escaped the juggernaut’s wrath. The owner of the bus service briefly spoke with Bulletin at the scene and mentioned that they believe the cause of the accident could have been mechanical failure. At the time of going to print we had received no further information.
The runaway bus finally came to a halt at the intersection at Green Gables and Minitzani Park.
The driver of the bus was visibly shocked after he was removed from his vehicle when it finally came to a standstill. Members of the Tzaneen Traffic Department, Canine Security and Tzaneen Neighbourhood Watch were on scene in minutes to assist. Photos: Joe Dreyer
Four fired over Talana Electrician dies at substation ■ Billy Sibuyi
A woman stands infront of one of the shacks at Talana.
■ Joe Dreyer Four members of the Bid Evaluation Committee of the Limpopo Housing Agency (LHA) were relieved of their duties after the R2,4 million tender at the Talana hostel in Tzaneen. This follows the construction of the corrugated makeshift shacks by the municipality, which Premiere Stan Mathabatha hailed as their response to fighting the effects of Covid-19 during the first wave, last year. The construction of the shacks was a slap in the face of the impoverished residents of the informal settlement in Tzaneen’s old industrial area. Mathabatha and the department came under fire after they reportedly spent R64 000 per unit which was nothing more than a shipping container. Residents from the area, for whom the shacks were built expressed discontent with the state of the shelters as it was soon reported that some of them had never been completed. They claimed
that though toilets were also constructed as part of the Covid-19 initiatives, they were not functional which led to them being vandalized by street kids, and some even stolen and resold. A resident told Bulletin that when it rains the shacks serve no purpose as some of the units do not have doors that close or even doors at all. “Even when I go to work there is no need to lock the door because there are no doors at those shacks. The door was faulty even when it was handed to me. Efforts to contact any of the so-called community leaders always fall on deaf ears,” she said. In December last year, several people were arrested in connection with the Talana scandal in Johannesburg and they have since been released on bail. They are expected to appear in court at the end of March. Among the charges proffered against them include fraud and corruption. It was reported that some of the contractors were not from the town of Tzaneen or adjacent areas.
The police are investigating a case of inquest following the passing of John Khoza (56), who died after receiving an electric shock whilst working on repairing stolen cables at a sub-station. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s electrician was electrocuted while working on a faulty 11 000 Volt switch gear at Selati Substation, in Phalaborwa on Sunday morning, the 7th of February. Khoza was reportedly working on replacing a stolen cable when he was electrocuted. Sources confirmed that it could have happened before 07:00 as the cables were allegedly stolen sometime the night before. It is not quite certain who the cable thieves are, but residents believe these could be the same group that stole a 15-metre section of a high voltage cable just 50 metres from Jakkalsbessie substation leaving almost the entire town without electricity for an entire day. CPF Medical’s Jaco Gericke, told Bulletin that after several attempts by the emergency services to resuscitate Khoza, he was declared dead on the scene. “It is really sad to lose someone in this manner, I knew him very well. We will surely miss his conversations and smile,” stated Gericke. The substation, which is not guarded, is in the bush just West off of the Mica Road. Khoza is reportedly not the first electrician to have lost his life at this substation. Some years back two electricians were reportedly electrocuted inside the sub during switching. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality confirmed the death of the 56-year-old and said that the family would be visited by the municipality to offer their support.
“We are saying that it is really sad to lose someone because of other people who chose to steal the cables and we condemn such acts,” stated the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu. “The family have not yet set a date for the funeral as they are still busy with the postmortem, however, we will communicate it as soon as we have the details,” he continued. Sergeant Elvis Mongwe, the spokesperson of the Phalaborwa Police, said that the detectives were still investigating a case of inquest. “We have opened a case of inquest and we are investigating to determine the cause of death.”

The Eiland Road death trap awaits victims ■ Joe Dreyer Earlier this week Bulletin received information that a portion of the P43/3 (Eiland Road) between Letsitele and the ATKV Eiland Resort and Spa was in the process of collapsing following the recent heavy rains in the region. Bulletin took a drive to the site on Tuesday the 9th of February. At the site approximately five kilometres or so from the resort, we noticed the road had started to sink dangerously. The problem, we were told by the Roads Inspector for the Mopani District Municipality’s Roads and Infrastructure department (a man named Frederick), was that debris had clogged up the two massive, corrugated stormwater drainage pipes which run beneath the road. The water had swelled up and started eating away at the soil beneath the road’s surface. “With the heavy rains, it appears as though trees and shrubs and branches were washed away and ended up at the entrances to these pipes. The water will always find an easier route, and in this case it was to move over the debris and into the soil between the two pipes. That soil was washed away and now the road is collapsing into the void left after the flooding,” he explained. “The only way we can fix this is to remove the section of tar and the
soil beneath this spot where it is sinking. We will then have to pour concrete and then fill it up with the soil and then resurface. My first order of business, however, is to establish an alternative route around this site so that motorists can pass while we work. It is an emergency, and we must start quickly.” Staff from the Komati Group’s Mabete Citrus operation which borders the Eiland Road, were on hand to assist and made their grounds available for the detour. Within an hour, workers from Komati were already hard at work preparing the gravel road that runs parallel to the tarred road to ensure that traffic from both directions would be able to pass safely. They faced some challenges which included waterpipes that had to be laid to prevent the flooding of the service road which is a gravel road used by farmworkers and vehicles. At the time of going to print the team from Komati was still hard at work securing the detour route. No work had however been done to the sinkhole which had now already seriously degrade do to the point where the tarred surface was starting to separate from itself. We had also not been able to contact the spokesperson for the Mopani District’s Roads department and our call to Joel Seabi, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, remained unanswered as he was in a meeting.
Before we left Tzaneen on Tuesday, we spoke to the newly appointed head of the Mopani District Municipality’s Roads and Infrastructure Department, Catherine Maluleke, who said that she was not going to give public comment on the situation, but referred us to their media liaison department “at head office”. We asked her which one of the spokespeople would speak on her behalf – to which she had no answer even when we named all the spokespeople, we had on our call list. “I have only just joined this department and so I do not know all of the spokespeople by name, but the media department at head office will be able to tell you who to speak to. You can send them your questions which they will send to me and I will send them answers, which they will send back to you for the public.” Manager of the ATKV Eiland Resort and Spa, Wimpie Boshoff, was also at the scene on Tuesday. He and his team lead by one his other managers, Chris Burger, spent the evening before, clearing out debris which had caused the culverts beneath the road to block up and water to wash away the soil above. We spoke to him about the situation, not only regarding the sinkhole, but the road in general. “Currently we have guests from other provinces visiting our resort. They do not know this area or this road. If you had to hit this sinkhole in the middle of
A massive sinkhole has started forming across the entire breadth of the Eiland Road near the Resort and Spa.
the night at 80km/h while towing a caravan, you will roll your vehicle,” he exclaimed. “This road is so bad and has been so bad for a very long time. In fact, I have not driven this road myself for about six months because of all the potholes. I tell all of our guests to use the Giyani Road instead. It really does have a negative impact on our income.” Bulletin took a drive through the entire length of the Eiland Road and counted the potholes which have made this route nearly impassable to sedans and smaller family vehicles. It is beyond belief that we counted approximately 1 136 potholes (we may very well have missed a few) between the ATKV Eiland Resort and Spa, and the T-junction with the R71 that leads to Letsitele. This despite a roads crew busy repairing the surface with bags of cold tar. The same road crew we photographed in December. At that time, the foreman of this roads crew told us that they had been working on repairing potholes for the Mopani District Municipality for close on a year and that they started at the Eiland side of the road, and were working their way back towards Letsitele’s side. Shocking that the majority of the large potholes we counted, were on the side of the road which this team had apparently already repaired.
In this photograph a section of no more than 30 metres boasts more than 50 potholes. Photos: Joe Dreyer

“Ek oefen so te sê daagliks by die gymnasium.

Double win for Steenkamp
■ Roelof de Jonge
Tzaneen Country Club’s, Luan Steenkamp, held his nerve to win the Limpopo Closed Strokeplay Championship for men and women. This tournament was held on Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th of February at the course of Polokwane Golf Club. But what a tournament it was. Like the Soutpansberg Open recently in Louis Trichardt, the participants again had to endure some wet weather during the competition. It seemed as though Steenkamp favoured the wet weather conditions, as he fought back from three shots over par after the first round. The second round started in the rain and this is when Steenkamp rose to the challenge for the lead. After 27 holes it was clear that the leader board was changing rapidly with Steenkamp progressing to an even score for the tournament. Rival golfer Shaun Mouton from Polokwane Golf Club finished with 68 to take the Mid-Am Champion honours. While some of the other players fell by the wayside, especially the front leaders who were struggling to sink vital puts due the wet weather, Steenkamp was like the proverbial fish in water. He eventually finished the second round with 5 under par with a tally of 67 to be crowned the champion of the Limpopo Closed Play Championship. This victory is Steenkamp’s second consecutive victory since his tri-
umph in the Soutpansberg Open in last month. With this latest win in Polokwane, Steenkamp has now taken the lead in the latest ranking of the Toshiba Cup (Limpopo’s amateur golf championship ranking). The next event is the Tzaneen Open Tournament at Tzaneen Country Club on the 27th of February. Steenkamp is the defending champion of the Tzaneen Open after his win in 2020. Last year after his vic-

tory in the Tzaneen Open, he also went on to win the Tzaneen Club tournament. This year it is the first time Steenkamp recorded two consecutive Limpopo tournament wins. He is now on a hat trick of provincial wins, and the local golf fraternity will follow him with eagerness to see if this golfer can seal another Tzaneen Open win.
