DEEP BLUE to the rescue
■ Joe Dreyer It was only after Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha and his taxpayer-funded entourage travelled along the road that leads to the Muhlava Royal palace, that he decided to ask questions about shoddy workmanship. This week he accosted both Pule Shayi and Maripe Mangena, the mayors of the Mopani District and Greater Tzaneen Municipality respectively, regarding the state of the roads. Furthermore, he appeared to believe that the horrible state of the road was as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic which had halted maintenance on the routes. Mathabatha who said the visit to the royal family was the first after the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, said during a breakfast at the royal council that he had asked the two mayors some questions. “While travelling to the Nkuna traditional offices we were traveling on a tarred road with many potholes and it was uncomfortable to drive on” he said. “I then, during the visit, asked the mayors of Mopani and Tzaneen why the contractor could build such a tar road with dams along the way and when they could not give answers, I ordered them that the contractor who built that road should be blacklisted and never be given any government job. Such people are wasting the government a lot of money with their shoddy work.” ***Editor’s comment: Shame. We should blacklist
a contractor for shoddy work because the premier (a public servant who seems to not see himself as such), had an “uncomfortable ride” along a pothole-riddled road which was constructed by one of his own departments’ appointed contractors? What about the many other roads that are a mess, Mr Mathabatha? What about the Eiland Road which collapsed two months ago and which your departments have not felt the need to address even despite weekly media reports on the 1 135 potholes that lead up to the massive sinkhole? What about the roads the farmers in Letsitele travel on every day in order to put food on your table? Do these roads not bother you? Or do they only bother you now that its time for elections again? Mathabatha was addressing an audience, comprised mostly of government officials and community based organisations at the Nkowankowa stadium during the launch of the Mopani District Development Model. He was accompanied among others by the local chief Hosi Ribye Muhlava III, the MEC for Cogta, Basikopo Makamu, Education MEC Polly Boshielo and the Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba with GTM mayor Maripe Mangena as the host. He said that this comes at the time almost all the departments in his province, with the exception of Education, received unqualified reports during the representation of the report of the Auditor-General (AG) Tsakane Maluleke. He said he will sit with the departments that did not deliver as per the expectations of the AG and make sure that in the coming year
their standing had changed. In true political fashion and with the usual rehearsed sternness, Mathabatha said that he is expecting all the departments not to get disclaimers in the upcoming financial year. “ Mayor Pule Shai, I am anxiously, awaiting the report of the auditor general for the municipalities which is due soon in which the Mopani District Municipality will not be having a disclaimer. Mangena (referring to the mayor of Tzaneen) we do not want a disclaimer in Tzaneen.” “When a municipality or an institution of government receives a disclaimer it means that there is corruption in that institution. Or else the finances that are given to the institution are not used as they are supposed to.” Back to the business of the address his colleagues and Mathebatha said that the development models were launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in October 2020 at the Waterberg region of Limpopo. In the time following, they started launching development models in each region and so far they covered three regions and they are left with Sekhukhune which will be launched in the coming week. Mathabatha further said that the aim of the development models is to revive the economy through the reopening of the industrial zones in each district and the model will also cover areas such as agribusiness, industrialization, as well as assisting community development initiatives. He called on stakeholders not to steal from the projects because it is the same communities that are suffering.
Will Tzaneen Bail for BCF rioters have new mayor? ■ Billy Sibuyi
■ Joe Dreyer The eagerly awaited fifth democratic local government elections will take place in October this year thus putting to rest the rumours that the poll would be postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic in which public gatherings are discouraged. This was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last Thursday during a door-to-door campaign for a by-election in Hammersdale-Durban. “We are confident that our members here will work hard to win this by-election. They will also work hard and win in October when we will be voting.” Ramaphosa further urged branches to hold their Branch General Meetings (BGM)`s and work hard for the upcoming local election. The call comes amid many branches in Tzaneen intensifying their preparations for the local government elections. (Editor’s comment: it will likely be the only time that the members work hard as it is also the only time a politician conducts door-to-door visits.) In the Lesedi area of Tzaneen most schools were filled with yellow-clad ANC members who were holding their BGM`s to prepare for the coming poll. According to the constitution of the country, local government elections should take place every five years from the day of the last election and the president of the country should announce the day of the election three months prior to the election day. If the comments by the President Cyril Ramaphosa is anything to go by, the day of the election will be announced in either July or August. Among the parties that are hard at work recruiting members in order to build a base during the poll is the Democratic Alliance, where members were urged to revive the branches. A source from within the ANC said that members “are not sleeping” as reports from residents claim they are either visited or phoned by fellow comrades seeking nominations for councillorship during the BGM`s. It is during these meetings that the names of the candidates for the coming local government elections are announced. Councillors not returning to their positions are allegedly also working hard in the background to nominate their cronies. There is also a very clear division among the comrades who are faced with having to chose their faction. On the one hand we have the Ramaphosa faction and on the other, we have Ace. The latter who is due to vacate his office after a recommendation by the National Executive Committee (NEC) that those charged with criminal offences should vacate their offices within 30 days. The Mopani District which is described as the stronghold for the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) fanatics, is the worst affected as the supporters of Cyril Ramaphosa are trying hard to stamp down their power in order to avoid the ramifications of having opponents in strategic positions. Tzaneen could very well be facing an uncertain future as rumour has it that the knives are out for the current mayor, Maripe Mangena, and the service delivery stalwart Thapelo Matlala.
Nine suspects, including a South African National Defense Force (SANDF) member, who were arrested for public violence, following what was described as a terror attack on the rights of Phalaborwa’s freedoms, appeared in the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, the 20th of April for bail applications. The nine suspects, Mavis, Peter, Katlego, Maredzi, and Khali Malatji, Thsepo Malungani, Lebogang Shokane, Ngwako Monyela, and Joe Mashale were all granted bail and their cases postponed to the 24th of May. The suspects were appearing on charges of public violence after seemingly being part of violent riots led by the Ba-Phalaborwa Community Forum (BCF), whereby surrounding settlements including Phalaborwa town were held hostage over a dispute between them and the mines, which has since been resolved. Members of the community were alleg-
edly unhappy about resolutions reached between PMC, Foskor, Traditional Authorities of Ba-Phalaborwa Communities, and the Mayor Merriam Malatji, whereby it was decided that CV’s and business profiles should be submitted online. This resolution angered the members of the BCF as this was decided without their participation at the meetings. After the week-long standoff, in a meeting which included representatives of the BCF, it was agreed that preference would be given to Ba-Phalaborwa locals for all vacancies, subject to them meeting the requirements. The SANDF member, Thsepo Malungani, and Joe Mashele each were granted bail of R1 000 respectively, due to previous convictions, which the police said would only be released during trial, and the rest of the suspects each received bail of R750. The police said that the bail conditions were that all suspects must report to their nearest police station once week and they must not engage themselves in criminal activities such as public violence.
BPM is still offline ■ Billy Sibuyi
The Ba-Phalaborwa municipality has been offline for more than a month. According to the municipality their phone lines have been down for all this time due to “technical issues” which their technical team is apparently looking into. Residents have been unable to contact their municipal offices to report problems with accounts and other service delivery related queries. This has led to residents contacting their ward councilor, Sybrandt de Beer, who has been working around the clock as a middle-man between the end-users and the municipality. “It is unbelievable that an institution as large as the BPM can be without their phone lines for more than a month. Residents are unable to contact them to report faults on
Ebenezer 98.7%
their accounts, and report emergencies like water leaks to standby personnel.” Bulletin reported on the gallons of clean drinking water that was spewing out of a burst water pipe in Tambotie Park daily, and as you read this report, that pipe is still doing so. Thousands of litres of clean drinking water is flooding the park and the municipality cares so little about their mandate, that they have not bothered to repair it. Much less restore their communication channels with the public. The BPM spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu, when contacted for comment by Bulletin, requested that we send him an email so that the Municipal Manager could comment on our enquiry. Bulletin sent that email to Mahesu three weeks ago and we still have not received a response.

DWS representatives fail to show for meeting ■ Joe Dreyer The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) does not respect their end-users enough to show up for a meeting, scheduled between themselves and representatives of the community, in Tzaneen on Wednesday this week. Instead, the representatives of the DWS held their meeting in secret at the council chambers of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. On Monday, Bulletin received notice of a meeting that was scheduled to take place at the council chamber of the GTM between the DWS and members of various end-user groups including the Letaba Water Users Association, SANParks, Agri-Letaba and various others. The media was not officially invited, and no public notices were published. At 09:45 on the morning of the scheduled meeting, it was announced that the venue for the meeting had been changed and that it would now take place at the Mopani Disaster Management Centre at approximately 10:30. Bulletin arrived at the venue at precisely 10:32 and was surprised that inside the auditorium sat only four other individuals, who had already been waiting for the meeting to start for close on 15 minutes. These individuals were Jacques Kruger of the Letaba Water Users Association, Naomi Excell and Pieter Vorster of Agri Letaba and Jacques Venter of SANParks. There was no sign of any member of the DWS. In fact, the only evidence that a meeting was scheduled to take place, were the branded DWS banners proclaiming their commitment to service and risk management. After waiting for an hour, one of the four attendees contacted one of the DWS representatives to find out why the meeting was running behind schedule by more than an hour. He was told that the representatives were on their way to the venue, but they were first “wrapping up at the municipality.” Another hour passed and eventually the four people signed the attendance register and left.
The meeting was apparently part of the DWS “Roadshow”. At the time of going to print we had not received any feedback on what exactly this roadshow was, why the meeting held at the municipality was not open to the public, what the municipality’s involvement with a national project was, or whether the meeting would be rescheduled. We also received no apology for the unprofessionalism and clear disdain with which the DWS treated their end-users. Regarding the disgraceful Tzaneen Dam project, we wanted to use the opportunity during the meeting, to question the DWS on exactly what went wrong with the project, when will it be completed and at what extra cost. We have tried on numerous occasions to gain any new information from the department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, but this has been fruitless. To date, the public have heard no clear explanations of the actual reasons why the dam’s wall was never completed. There have been open-ended excuses tabled which included the usual budgetary constraints or Covid-19 hampering efforts or “once the project started we encountered challenges which we did not expect.” But as you read this article, Tzaneen’s dam wall is still not completed despite the great revelation that the new minister of water affairs wanted to stop using outside contractors and that the DWS Construction North team would take over and finish the project. That was two years ago during a meeting in the hall at the showgrounds. What now? What excuse will we force feed the Muscovy with this time? The public has the right to know precisely what their money is being spent on and what the reasons are for projects that directly affect their livelihoods being cancelled or failing, and the solutions for those. When meetings are scheduled and commitments not honoured, it leaves a decidedly bad taste in the mouths of those fitting the bill. - If you like foie gras, that doesn’t mean you no longer need a regular steak. — Alexey Miller

Waiting for supplies
■ Joe Dreyer The project to fence off the park between Poinsettia and Park Streets in Tzaneen has temporarily come to a halt as the municipality awaits the delivery of more steel. The project started two weeks ago after a decade’s worth of complaints by the residents of that neighbourhood. The aim is to stop the taxi drivers from illegally washing their vehicles in the stream situated inside this park. “The project has not stopped, we have run out of steel and are awaiting supplies,” assured GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala.

Corrupt court Nine poachers in Rhino Court interpreter cuffed ■
trampled by a herd of breeding elephants and the third managed to evade arrest, albeit he too, was injured in the encounter with the breeding herd. On Sunday, the 18th of April, rangers detected an incursion on a routine patrol and despite the hot weather conditions, they unwearyingly tracked the spoor until they contacted a group of three suspected poachers. “All three suspects were arrested and a high caliber hunting rifle, poaching equipment, and ammunition were recovered. The rangers were supported by the Airwing and K9 units during this operation as well,” stated Isaac Phaahla, the spokesperson of the KNP. “We hope these arrests send a strong message to poachers, that we are determined to stop them in their tracks within the Park. SANParks is committed to work harder with law enforcement agencies and communities outside the Park to intensify efforts to crack the criminal syndicates driving these crimes,” concluded Coleman.

Busizwe Zitha, a 40-year-old, a Bushbuckridge Court Interpreter from Mkhulu, just outside Hazyview, was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team on Friday, the 16th of April, for alleged corruption. It is alleged that between January and March 2021, Zitha approached an accused who was released on bail for two domestic violence related cases where he had allegedly violated a protection order. According to the Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Capt Dineo Sekgotodi, the official, Zitha, then demanded money from the accused who was out on bail, claiming that he will ensure that the cases for domestic violence were withdrawn. “The victim paid the money as demanded but the case was not withdrawn,” Sekgotodi stated. It is further alleged that the interpreter continued soliciting money from the victim on different occasions stating that he needed to pay for the Prosecutor’s personal needs for the case docket to be destroyed permanently and according to the Hawks’, the victim continued acceding to the demands but to his surprise the case just kept being postponed. The victim alerted the Hawks of his predicament and the resultant investigation led to the interpreter’s arrest after a warrant was granted. According to reports shared with Bulletin, on Friday morning, prior to the official being arrested, a second victim came to court to report that the same official demanded money from her to have her case withdrawn which also never happened despite the payment being made out to him. Zitha appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the 19th of April, and was remanded in custody until the 22nd of April for further investigations and a possible bail application. The Hawks in Mpumalanga are still appealing to all victims who paid money to the suspect for the withdrawal of their cases to come forth and report the matter by contacting the investigating officer, Captain Luzile Ndlovu on 071 481 2819.
Poacher trampled by elephant herd
The ‘Rhino court’ in Skukuza, which was reopened this month, will have its hands full when they deal with cases of nine suspected poachers who were arrested in the Kruger National Park at the weekend. The reopening of the Skukuza regional court on the 1st of April after what has been described as a lengthy and suspiciously sinister legal battle waged by Mpumalanga regional court president Naomi Annette Engelbrecht to close its doors was seen as a victory of purity over passion. On the 1st of February, the Constitutional Court dismissed Engelbrecht’s application for leave to appeal a high court decision, allowing the ‘rhino court’, as it is affectionately known, to continue operating inside the park. Engelbrecht had wanted to move all cases set for the court to the Mhala circuit court 100km away and faced opposition from Mpumalanga High Court Judge President Francis Legodi and the National Director of Public Prosecutions. According to reports from the KNP, five suspected poachers were arrested in the Pretoriuskop section after they were found in possession of ammunition, a silencer, and two high caliber hunting rifles. “It has been a successful weekend in the fight to keep our rhinos alive in the park, we are delighted with our anti-poaching teams who were able to arrest suspects before any animal was killed. The actions are a morale booster for our anti-poaching teams and conservation efforts,” said Gareth Coleman, the Managing Executive of the KNP. On Saturday, the 17th of April, SANParks Rangers, supported by Airwing and K9 units apprehended one suspected poacher and recovered poaching equipment including a Senior Environmental Investigator Frikkie Rossouw in front of the newly refurbished court. rifle and an axe. ■ Billy Sibuyi A suspected poacher was trampled to death by a herd of elephants in the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Saturday, the 17th of April. This was according to a statement by South African National Parks (SANParks) published Sunday. Three suspected poachers were attempting to flee the KNP rangers when they ran into a breeding herd of elephants, the statement said. Once the suspects realized they were being pursued, they dropped an axe and a bag with their provisions, and ran away from the rangers, SANParks explained. According to the statement, the field rangers were out on a routine patrol at the Phabeni area, around Hazyview, when they detected incoming tracks and made a follow up in pursuit of the suspects. “Three individuals were spotted by the rangers and attempted to run away, but the rangers requested back-up from the Airwing and K9 unit. When they realised they had been spotted, the suspected poachers dropped an axe and a bag with their provisions to escape from the rangers,” stated the spokesperson of the KNP, Isaac Phaahla. According to Phaahla, one of the suspects was arrested following assistance from the Airwing and K9 unit. The suspect informed the rangers that the group had run into a herd of elephants and was not sure if his accomplice had managed to escape. Phaahla said that the rangers discovered his accomplice badly trampled and had unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The third suspect is said to have been injured in the eye but continued to flee. “A rifle was recovered, and the case was referred to police, whom together with the pathology team attended to the scene”. The Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman, congratulated all those involved in the arrests. “We are proud of the teamwork and dedication of our Rangers Corp, our aviators and the K9 unit. It is unfortunate that a life was unnecessarily lost. Only through discipline, teamwork and tenacity will we be able help stem the tide of rhino poaching in KNP,” said Coleman. The search for the third suspect is underway. Coleman has called on the community members living close to the KNP to assist with information. “The campaign against poaching is the responsibility of all of us. It threatens many livelihoods, destroys families, and takes much needed resources to fight crime which could be used for creating jobs and development,” concluded Coleman.
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and Japan Water Works Association (JWWA), have been in talks to establish a working agreement between the two countries since the start of 2021. This week, on Wednesday, the 21st of April, they entered into a letter of intent (LOI) to share information, improve public health, enhance and develop safe and sufficient water management and supply. The collaboration was formalised during a virtual joint feedback session on water management webinars that the two parties have been busy with since the beginning of the year. Since then, SALGA and JWWA have jointly initiated and convened three webinars on water management, focussing on the following thematic areas; Human Resources Development, Disaster/Emergency Response and Product Quality and Technology and Innovation. Speaking via the Zoom platform during the joint feedback session, SALGA CEO Xolile George said that conservation was critical for SALGA. “One of our mandates is to support and advise, and most importantly, to find solutions to challenges faced by our member municipalities. Our water services deliv-
ery track record has been incrementally improving. Under the 2018 – 2019 reporting period, municipalities increased access to water and sanitation by 5, 2% and 7, 6% respectively.” She continued by admitting that there was room for improvement and that her organization was aware of the persistent challenges they face. “We are cognisant of the stubborn challenges that persist, such as non-revenue water, reliability of supply, infrastructure management, and human resources development data management and analytics amongst others. It is our observation that the Japanese have excelled in these fields amongst many others. We wish to further exchange notes on your recipe for success.” The LOI will reportedly assist in regularising the partnership between the two parties and take the partnership to higher levels. According to the department of Water and Sanitation, there is evidence that the two organisations bring value to the table in a quest to advance better water management. Furthermore, SALGA, jointly with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), convened a water supply learning and sharing conservation between eThekwini, Umgeni Water, Water Institute of South Africa and Yokohama City’s young water professionals.
Follow up: Road still closed ■ Joe Dreyer There is no new information from the Mopani District Municipality on the repairs to the P43/3 Eiland which runs from Letsitele to the popular ATKV Eiland Spa and Resort. It has now been exactly two months and two weeks since a portion of the road formed a sinkhole and collapsed under its own weight rendering the route impassable. The management team from the resort cleared the debris from the stormwater culverts beneath the road and painted the section of the sinkhole in bright yellow to caution motorists. The Komati group made a
portion of their farmland available for a detour route. The Mopani District Municipality said that the road will now be placed on top of their priorities list. Since then, there has been no repair work done to the site, and the municipality’s spokesperson is not answering or returning any of the Bulletin’s calls. We have heard rumours that two contractors have tendered for the repair project but could not confirm this. The road is now closed and travellers rerouted along the detour. There are still hundreds of potholes littered across the entire stretch of the 30 kilometre-long road and motorists are reminded to drive with extreme caution.
The Eiland Road is closed and motorists should use the detour along Komati Group’s farmland.

They are the bustling Joubert Street’s gatekeepers ■ Joe Dreyer In every city or town, you find a beacon by which to navigate. In Tzaneen that particular beacon happens to be at the town’s epicentre, and therefor is rightly referred to as the heartbeat of Tzaneen. Tzaneng Mall stands impressive against the bushveld sky as it towers over the main street, Danie Joubert to its South and wears Claude Wheatley as its crown to the North. Within its walls shoppers will find all the major national retailers with a handful of local storekeepers sprinkled into the mix to give it that unique flair it has become known for. It was constructed in 1989 by the RMB Group and sold to its current owners, Resilient Properties, just before Christmas of 2003. The group has a 60% interest in Mall of the North in Polokwane and a 90% interest in the popular I’langa Mall in Nelspruit among others. They also own and manage the two other major retail centres in Tzaneen namely Crossings and Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre. Originally the Tzaneng Mall consisted only of the “top half” which borders Danie Joubert Street, but after a rebuild and revamp in 2004 and 2005, the centre expanded to include a host of retail stores and smaller shops situated on the back end of the mall. This centre now boasts 915 parking bays, 106 shops and important public service
offices including the department of Home Affairs. Along with the new vision and expansion came the creation of a number of small stalls to facilitate the transformation of informal traders to formal traders. Later, in 2007, further remodelling was completed on the building and in 2017 the mall was upgraded once more to include two sets of escalators and a brand-new entrance with a linkage between the taxi rank and the mall providing safe and sheltered access for commuters. In total, Tzaneng Mall covers a mammoth 40 000m2. With that much space, and that many retailers, Tzaneen residents no longer feel the need to travel to the cities for their retail therapy. The parking bays are clean and safe and mall management are accessible to handle any visitor complaints on the spot. Standing at the operational helm is Alida Smit, General Manager of Tzaneng Mall, Tzaneen Crossing and Tzaneen Lifestyle centre. With the support of Operations Manager, Gustav Kriek and the maintenance team, you can rest assured that your daily, weekly or monthly shopping trip no longer needs to be a grim one. Bontekoning takes third Die balle die rol vir jou bokkie ■ Roelof de Jonge The Insect Science Mountain Bike (MTB) team had quite an eventful weekend on Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th of April, having competed in a double header at the same racetrack, the Bloemendal Trial Park in the Western Cape. It was the third round of the South African XCO MTB Cup Series and the following morning, Sunday, the second round of the Western Cape XCO MTB Cup Series. These riders delivered some incredible racing through the scenic routes which consisted of wine orchards and rocky hill sections amidst some fine and warm weather conditions. On the Saturday Keagan Bontekoning and teammate, Arno du Toit, raced in the Elite Men’s category of the SA XCO Cup where Bontekoning managed a third place against some formidable competitors. Right behind him was du Toit who took up the fourth spot. Gunther Katzke and Herman Fourie raced in the category for Junior Men where Katzke secured a fine second place for his efforts. Fourie rounded off the top five positions, making it two Insect Science Riders in the top five spots for the SA XCO Cup Series once again. The team’s iron lady, Danielle Strydom, raced in the division for Elite Woman. Strydom, who aimed for a third consecutive podium place, found some stiff competition this time round, but still managed to salvage a well-
earned fifth place overall. On the Sunday in the Western Cape (WC) XCO Cup Series race, Du Toit managed a fourth spot in the Men’s Elite division while Bontekoning came home in sixth place. The Junior Men rider, Fourie, had a tough outing this time round and came home in 11th spot.

Blues bow to P-Bombers’ raid
■ Joe Dreyer
It was a troublesome time in the penalty area for the Merensky First XI on Saturday evening when they suffered a 7-0 loss at the hands of the mighty Pietersburg High. In an ironic twist the final score would appear to be retribution for the massive victory the Blues claimed over their neighbours from Ben Vorster just the evening before when they sent the Reds home with a 6-0 defeat. It was always going to be a tough game for any squad matching up against the legendary skill of the Polokwane side which ranked 66th in the 2019 Top 100 Schools Boys First team standings just behind Dale College. From the onset it was clear that the PHS boys were very well versed in the speed and accuracy of the aqua-turf upon which they would face off against their hosts, who only started training on this new pitch, less than a year prior. Communication between the visiting forwards was exceptional. Passes were kept short, quick and accurate with the first goal scored in the opening four minutes of the first chukka off the stick of Jan Grobler who caught the keeper off balance and sent the ball top centre. This quick goal visibly rattled the Blues defensive line who allowed for another goal two minutes later after a forced foot fault in the D. The PHS boys had mastered the art of the shorty and this would become the Achilles heel of their hosts as the match progressed. It almost appeared as though PHS was purposefully playing for short corners. In the final minute of the first chukka PHS were awarded another shorty and this time it was Eduan Gobey who deflected a drag flick off Merensky goal herder, Kellen Gutteridge’s pads, and into the backboard to end the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. The second chukka started with a shorty for Merensky which was dragged too high to bother PHS Keeper, Franco van Dyk, who watched the dimple sail over his box into the catch net behind it. This was answered by a short corner for PHS after a foot fault which

was botched by the striker and cleared out of the danger zone by Merensky’s backs. Moments later PHS was awarded another shorty off a backstick infringement which was sent into the top right corner to extend the visitors’ lead by 5 goals to zero. The hosts were offered a chance at retaliation after an offside call by the umpire which resulted in a short corner. With some miscommunication attributed to nerves however, the Merensky strikers botched the opportunity and headed to the stands for the start of the third chukka. The penultimate quarter was a rather uneventful back and forth between the two sides as PHS eventually scored off another short

corner moments after a Merensky shorty sailed wide of the box. The last quarter saw PHS score twice more off short corners to end the match with a seven-goal victory. “It was down to silly mistakes such as foot faults and backstick play by the Merensky boys which ultimately led to their opponents having the upper hand,” said umpire Mynhardt Bouwer after the match. “It was very clear that PHS spent a lot of time focusing on perfecting their penalties and their communication between the backs and their front four. Merensky is a good team, they will do well if they can iron out the basics.”
