■ Joe Dreyer Willie Smit, a resident from Ofcolaco and owner of the Willkie K9 security company this week recovered a hijacked vehicle and narrowly escaped being run over by a suspect in a rented VW Polo near Sugarloaf in Tzaneen. According to Smit he was returning a rented motor vehicle to Avis in Tzaneen. “I stopped about 100 metres from Avis to speak to a police member from the Jane Furse station when I noticed a white Polo dropping someone off at the car hirer. The man entered Avis on foot and the Polo continued driving into the direction of Sugarloaf,” Smit explained. “As he drove past me I noticed that it was the same Polo which we had put out a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) on in connection with credit card scamming and robbing hitch hikers.” He informed the risk manager and asked that the suspect who had entered Avis, be detained on the premises. “As we were requesting back up, the suspect bolted for the door and ran out of the building into the street. I ran after him, but went back to Avis to get my vehicle, and when we rounded

the corner near Sugarloaf, we spotted the Polo. I used my vehicle to block the suspect in the road. He reversed and crashed into a Mercedes. Noticing that he was stuck he managed to ram his way past the Mercedes to make a getaway.” Smit drew his firearm and shot out the rear left tyre of the Polo in attempt to stop him from escaping. The driver however continued to speed through the streets and eventually made his way onto the R36 where he abandoned the vehicle and climbed into a taxi near Premjee’s Cash and Carry. “The Politsi K9 Unit assisted us in the pursuit of the Polo, unfortunately the suspects evaded arrest this time. They were the same guys who robbed a shopper of R4 000 at Nkowankowa Spar earlier this month.” It has been determined that suspects who prey on hitch hikers especially, and specialize in armed robberies of businesses, adopt a strategy whereby they hire vehicles from vehicle renting companies to commit their crimes with. Last month the suspect who chased up the one-way in Agatha Road leading past Tzaneen Primary and caused a major accident, was also driving a rented white VW Polo.

Smit and his team specialize in vehicle recoveries. This week a vehicle that was reported as hijacked in Tzaneen, was recovered by him in Burgersfort.

Stan threatens to identify turncoats ■ Jeff Jackson Limpopo ANC chairperson and Premier, Stanley Mathabatha threatened to hold a meeting with the top six of the organisation and expose members of his party who support President Cyril Ramaphosa in public, but denounce him behind the scenes. Mathabatha formed part of the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) whose presentation were selectively leaked by fellow comrades. The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting was called to discuss the report by the Integrity Committee (Editor’s note: irony is often excruciating) in which the issue of party members charged with corruption could be discussed. During the meeting, drama unfolded when Secretary General (SG) Ace Magashule who was on suspension, was cut off from the virtual meeting. Magashule was suspended along with MP Bongani Bongo. During the meeting, Mathabatha who is a known ally of President Cyril Ramaphosa, said he was the best president to had ever served the party and the country, and said some of the senior members

defending Ramaphosa had been holding factional battles across different provinces sowing divisions within the party. He said he will convene a meeting with the top six of the ANC to discuss the matter. “I can organise a meeting with the top six and mention the comrades by their names, as well as the meetings they called in the province where some of us were vilified. We sometimes asked ourselves if there is still the ANC because some of us hate each other more than we hate our enemies or members of the opposition parties,” said Mathabatha. (Editor’s note: Mr Mathabatha, respectively, you should refrain from allowing your emotions to control your tongue. Which “enemies” were you referring to, and which opposition members specifically do you “hate”? It is frightening to think that certain members of the ANC hold office while harbouring “hate” towards their countrymen. You accuse my father and his generation of hating the new South Africa, when ironically you come from the same generation and harbour the same hate. The politicians in this country behave like children, bickering among themselves and blaming each other for looting this country into abject poverty. Now that

the elections are approaching and fingers are being pointed at your government’s failures, you start blame shifting. Perhaps a change of office – for all of you - is due). This came in the wake of his visit to Tzaneen where leaders of both local and district municipalities were criticised for the shoddy work done by contractors in some of the access roads in the area. Mathabatha went as far as saying that contractors who do shoddy work should be blacklisted. He also called on the local leaders not to get disclaimers in their reports of the AG as that means corruption is rife. (Editor’s note: Stan, if you had “criticized” your subordinates five years ago, you would have put an end to most of the “shoddy” work in your province). Earlier this year, after the meeting of the NEC and the National Working Committee (NWC), it was resolved that those who had been criminally charged should step aside from their position as in line with the 2018 conference resolution. The matter was referred to the Integrity Commission. This resulted in the suspension of the SG of the party, Ace Magashule.

DEEP BLUE to the rescue

No more mud ■ Jeff Jackson

Residents of the communities of Marumofase and Nabane villages in the Maake area expressed jubilation after the long awaited paved road passing through the village nears completion. Some community members however expressed concern that when the project ends the people who were employed will be left unemployed. The paved road was initiated by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality after many complaints because when it rained, motorists could not drive on the road because of the mud. In some instances when it rained, the road was literally cut in half thus making it hard for taxis to enter the villages while teachers residing outside the village, could not reach their schools. Community Liaison Officer for the project, Sipho Molepo, when contacted for comment said that all was well with the project and could not shed any more light. Members of the community are concerned over the manner in which people were hired to work on projects like these. “The problem with community projects is that it is the same people who are hired while others are not considered,” said one member of the community. “Because of this pandemic the power now rests in the hands of the councillors as we as communities are no longer allowed to gather together and hold meetings.”

A thousand more arrests ■ Jeff Jackson

A total of 1 287 suspects, aged between 19 and 64, were arrested for various crimes including kidnapping, murder, attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen properties, robberies, burglaries, possession and dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes, assault, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, Contravention of the Road Traffic Act, Illegal Immigration Act, driving under influence and contravention of the regulations under the Disaster Management Act. These intelligence driven operations that are being conducted week in and week out, are comprised of the Crime Intelligence Unit, Detectives, the Limpopo Highway Patrol Team, Tactical Response Team, Organised Crime Unit, Stock theft Unit, Public Order Police Unit, Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, K9 Unit, Airwing, Narcotics Unit and other law enforcement officers. As liquor plays a major role in contributing to commission of crimes, especially contact crimes, enforcement on compliance with the Liquor Act was heightened which resulted in 187 fines being issued. A total of 289 shebeens were shut down and 425 Second-Hand Goods Act Compliance Inspections were conducted.

During these operations, 1 935 illicit cigarettes, 20 dangerous weapons, 69 grams of dagga, 41 grams of crystal meth, 154 grams of Nyaope, nine firearms, 663 litres of liquor, 38 knives, nine stolen motor vehicles were confiscated, and 1 217 fines and compliance notices related to the Road Traffic Act were issued. Limpopo Highway Patrol and the Polokwane Tracking Teams arrested three suspects aged between 23 and 27 shortly after they committed a business robbery at a clothing store in Seshego complex in the Capricorn District, where the suspects managed to get away with cellphones. Meanwhile, two suspects aged 23 and 26, allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a young woman in Burgersfort, were arrested at Dan Village outside Tzaneen. The victim was released unharmed after she was held for days while suspects demanded thousands of Rands in ransom from her family. The suspects managed to escape but Police continued with investigations until they were traced and arrested. Police seized about 1 000 sim cards from different network providers, believed to be the ones used during negotiations. The suspects arrested during these operations are expected to appear in different magistrate courts across the province. Mystical Rain Makers will have a new King

■ Jeff Jackson

Sixteen years after the death of the Rain Queen Makobo Modjadji the 6th, her son will rise to take the throne. Residents of the Mopani District were shocked this week upon hearing that Prince Lekukela Modjadi was appointed as the King of the Balobedu Tribe in Modjadjiskloof. The ceremony to install the new king will be held in October 2022. This comes after a visit by both former President Jacob Zuma and President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2018 to recognise the Queenship of Balobedu. In a ceremony attended by many traditional leaders from as far as the Eastern Cape, the audience was told that Masalanabo will be crowned Queen when she turned 18 years. Former President Jacob Zuma officially changed the status from a Chieftaincy to a Queenship after it was demoted in 1972. It was for this reason that the announcement by the Royal Council last week, came as a shock to many. Spokesperson for the royal family, Phetole Mapeule Modjadji, said that the family never announced that the late queen’s daughter, Princess Masalanabo Modjadji, would become the next Rain Queen. He also stated that the decision on who would succeed a deceased ruler, was usually extremely well-guarded and never made public before the coronation. He said that the council’s decision was final and could not be debated. In 2018, after the departure of the Zuma-Ramaphosa entourage from the royal palace in Khetagoni village, national media ran a news piece claiming that another family were claiming Queenship over the Balubedo, but the matter could not be entertained by the royal family. The Balobedu royal family had caused headlines on many occasions. When Queen Makobo Modjadi the sixth died, it was rumoured that she was poisoned. On the day of the funeral the hut housing the coffin caught fire, but the coffin was saved.

Lekukela will take over from Prince Mpapatla Modjadi who had been acting as the regent since 2005 when his mother died. He was expected to hand over the reins to his sister, Masalanabo, who will hence forth be known as “chief princess” or “Khadikholo” in the native Khelobedu language. The royal house had at the time of going to print not made their sudden change of heart known. The Balobedu kingdom originated in 1800 under the kingship of Maselekwane, who was later succeeded by his daughter Masalanabo, and since then, the kingdom known for rain-making was led by the Queens. Masalanabo was succeeded by Khesethoane who was later succeeded by Makoma and then Mokope who met with Queen Elizabeth and former President Nelson Mandela. Shortly after her death, Mokope’s daughter Makobo was meant to succeed her, but she was reluctant to part ways with normal life and was labelled as “mixing with commoners”. She later fell in love with a municipal manager from Modjadjiskloof, David Mohale, where two children were born. When she died a few years after ascending the throne, a legal custody battle ensued which resulted in the father of the future Queen, Masalanabo, to win custody. After reports surfaced that the young girl was being neglected by her father, the legal advisor of the royal family, Mathole Motshekga, obtained temporary custody of the girl Queen in the Randburg magistrate court. Since then, she resided in Gauteng with MP`s Mathole and Angie Motshekga. Balobedu are the Southern Africa ethnic group within the Sotho and Tswana people and were initially known as Bakwebo (wild pigs). The name Balobedu (which means place of tribute) was given to them by other tribes who believed the family could control the weather and bring either drought or rain. The name Modjadji literally means “Rain Makers”.

SANParks CEO faces charges of sexual assault ■ Billy Sibuyi SANParks appointed their managing executive of conservation services as the acting CEO while police investigations into charges of assault and sexual assault, hang over the head of their current boss, Fundisile Mketeni. Dr Luthando Dziba will take over the reigns in the interim. This followed charges of assault and sexual assault against Mketeni by a 35-year-old woman who claimed that the CEO allegedly tried to kiss her at a dinner party in the staff village and when she refused, he became agitated and aggressive. She laid the charges at the Skukuza Police station last week Friday, the 7th of May. SANParks has since released a statement stating that Mketeni will take special leave from his work engagements following the charges laid against him. SANParks Board Chairperson, Joanne Yawitch, said that in line with SANParks’ commitment to ethical conduct and the seriousness of the allegations, “Mketeni has requested to take special leave until such time that this matter has been resolved and the law has taken its course”. Yawitch added that the Board of SANParks views the allegations made in an extremely serious light and would allow the court proceedings Fundisile Mketeni to take its course and reach conclusions on the

allegations. “The Board will however investigate whether the circumstances surrounding the allegations led to any improper or illegal conduct which may affect the employment relationship,” concludes Yawitch. The spokesperson of the Mpumalanga Police, Brig Leonard Hlathi, confirmed to Bulletin that the police arrested three senior SANParks officials concerning cases of sexual assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on Monday, the 10th of May, after they handed themselves over to the police. Hlathi revealed that the 35-year-old also laid charges against two other senior officials in the ranks of SANParks, whose names are known to Bulletin. “Assault GBH cases were also opened against a 53-year-old Head of Department and a 29-yearold Risk Manager. All the above suspects were charged and taken to the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court and R2 000 bail was granted to each of the accused,” stated Hlathi. “The case was postponed until the 2nd of June for further police investigations.” It is unknown whether the two other high-ranking officials will be put on leave pending the allegations levelled against them, as Isaac Phaahla the spokesperson of SANParks referred our questions to the police, who could not provide us with such details.

Land invaders given the royal boot ■ Jeff Jackson

Scores of residents in Khujwana, in Ward 16 of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), who extended their homesteads without any approval from the Nkuna Traditional Authority were this week told to vacate the land as it belongs to the government. The decision was taken following disputes among community members themselves. According to a member of the Magwaza traditional court who attended the meeting, residents started to increase the sizes of their stands after the construction of the tar road. He said that while some were operating as makeshift spazashops, others started by fencing the small pieces of land and thereafter erected structures including shops. He said attempts by the court to warn against these practices failed because of the tar road and the electricity powerlines running over the area. He said the area had long been reserved for Eskom repair crews and as detours when the road was constructed. The community however opted to ignore the courts. A visit to the scene by this reporter revealed that most of the stands had been fenced in and there were two buildings constructed. While some used the open areas for planting maize, others used the space as dumping sites for construction material such as sand and concrete. It is said some had sold the space to prospective foreign shop-owners. “After a complaint from a family that a

business had been opened in front of their yard without their consent, the matter was reported to the traditional authorities. It was after it was not attended to, during the court sessions held every weekend, that the matter escalated to the royal council. Because some of the members of the royal council do not reside in the village, a delegation was sent to investigate the matter” said the source. A week later the investigation’s results were presented before the local court. “The court was represented by the regent Musisiwe Khumalo, as the headman was reportedly ill. The Magwaza court through their representative told the council none of the people fighting for the land were entitled to it because it belonged to the municipality,” our source revealed. “The royal council said all the people who closed the roads passing by the disputed land, should reopen the routes and vacate the land because nobody will compensate them in case of electricity problems as a result of all their illegal activities.” The invasion of communal land is common practice in the area as day after day there are disputes over land where in some instances it involves traditional leaders against traditional leaders. The case in point is a dispute between the Bathlabine and Maake Traditional Authorities over land between Lenyenye, Khujwana and Mokgoloboto and Muhlava. In the last mentioned, stands are regularly sold off illegally.

Pay(v)ing the way forward ■ Roelof de Jonge Thinking outside the bricks, erm, box, is what the Pretorius family quite obviously aspires to – and rather effortlessly succeeds at. Bricks@Tzaneen manufactured its first brick on the 29th of February 2016. This family business was created by the Pretorius family with dad Christo and his three sons Henco, Rico and Nico Pretorius heading up the operation. Earlier this year, the brothers came up with quite a spiffy way to thank their loyal customers for their support, garner new business and simultaneously promote the top quality their product has become known for. How, you ask? Well they headed over to social media and launched a remarkable competition. This competition certainly draw the attention of existing and prospecting clients. They literally gave away ten pallets of interlocking paving bricks. True story. The competition started on the 30th of March and ended on the 30th of April. On the 1st of May Bricks@Tzaneen announced the winner. An ecstatic Mahlatse Kgatle was the receiver of this amazing prize worth R16 000. The prize included the first 50 kilometres of transport to the venue of the winner as well. “I am really excited about this win and how the driveway of my home is going to be transformed, it is surely going to look genuinely nice, I can’t wait for it to be finished. I am so grateful to this com-

petition and to Bricks@Tzaneen which hosted this competition”, said a satisfied Kgatle. The Pretorius brothers, after enduring a torrid time in 2020 during the “hard lock down” which had a significant impact on the building industry, showed that determination and ambition will always trump hardship. “We needed to think out the box when it came to promoting our business. We decided to test the waters of social media and we were pleasantly surprised by the reaction this competition generated. So much so that we are considering hosting another similar competition in the not-so-distant future,” said Henco Pretorius. The entrants of the competition were asked to simply like the original post on the Facebook profile of Bricks@Tzaneen, share the post on their own timeline and comment or tag five of their friends in the post. The entrants had to motivate the reason for them needing the bricks, by detailing their plans to Bricks@Tzaneen. The winner was eventually hand-picked based on the above criteria. Congratulations Kgatle! Bricks@Tzaneen is situated next to the old Sapekoe building in Sapekoe Drive (or the R36 road leading to Lydenburg for those who do not know where the old Sapekoe building was). The contact number is 079 664 6787 and is available on WhatsApp too. Bricks@Tzaneen can be searched on Facebook by using the link @tzaneen01 or to find its Messenger profile.

Is Vaping safer than smoking cigarettes? ■ Joe Dreyer Smoking is bad for you. Full stop. Nobody understands this fact better than an actual smoker, and if you have never been a smoker, you will unfortunately never understand the reality that those addicted to nicotine live in. Nearly seven out of ten smokers say they really wish they could stop. They try and most fail after an hour, because despite what the judgemental non-smokers may believe, nicotine addiction is not a “bad habit” or “all in the mind” but an actual and terrible addiction. There have been cases however of people going “cold turkey” and simply putting the packet down and never touching a cigarette again, but those are few and extremely far between. Enter the e-cigarette, commonly known as vaping. Studies from the John Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease have shown that vaping is less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco products despite still not being as healthy as simply not smoking anything at all. In fact, in April this year (2021), the NHS in the United Kingdom will be handing out free vaping devices, liquid and supplies to patients wanting to quit smoking. Hospitals in Norfolk, London, Leicester, and Edinburgh will participate. According to Public health England, there is growing evidence that supports the use of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation (quitting) with an estimated 50,000 smokers quitting every year in England through the help of vaping. E-cigs or vapes let users inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke and do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide, unlike usual cigarettes. “Ja but what about that oke who died from vaping?” is usually the response from the nay-sayers who reference the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) stats that confirmed 60 deaths in patients associated with vaping. What they don’t tell you is that the CDC later confirmed that these cases appeared to predominantly affect those who tamper with, or modify their devices and used black market modified e-liquids. The CDC also stated that this was especially true of vaping products that contained THC. The Vape Guy in Tzaneen is a legitimate supplier of registered vaping devices, liquids and related products. As trusted members of the local community, Stephen and Ilze Czubora have been helping smokers kick the habit since 2013 when both quit smoking tobacco as part of adopting a healthier lifestyle. “It literally saved my life,” explained Stephen. “I was smoking 40 a day and on a fast track for some serious heart issues if I didn’t find some way to stop. Sure, vaping is not as healthy as not smoking at all, we understand that and tell people the same when they first consider making the move from the traditional to the electronic. But, we have seen in our own lives, and the lives of countless others in our immediate so-

Stephen and Ilze Czubora

Situated on Boundary Street, The Vape Guy was formerly trading under another name: Bumblebee Tattoo Studio. Stephen is a recognized tattoo artist in the area. cial circles, the benefits of leaving tobacco for a healthier alternative.” The Vape Guy is situated along Boundary Street just as you head up the hill towards Ben Vorster High School a few metres past AlanDale House. But be warned though, stopping by at the Czubora’s to “simply pick up some juice” will not be a quick in-and-out. “Ha! We have friends here, not customers, and what happens nine times out of ten is we start chatting about all kinds of stuff which leads to the inevitable “would you like a cup of coffee” and turns into a lekker kuier rather than just a transaction,” said Ilze chucklingly. “We have managed to create such a comfortable and friendly environment that people tend to not want to leave. And trust me, we don’t mind the company, and really enjoy the social break from everyday business.” Stephen and Ilze offer more than just safe alternatives to smoking.

They offer advice and an ear to listen. “Look, we are part of a community that has been exceptionally hard hit during the hard lock down and so if you have had a bad day and need to just offload a little while you’re in the store, go for it, we don’t mind. People come in all the time just to find out more about vaping.” As with every industry and with kids being kids, there are those that will take a chance. “We have a rule that we don’t sell to anyone under the age of 18, and we are strict about that too. We know all too well what the youngsters get up to and often we have had to get the parents into the shop to explain to them exactly what vaping is. Most parents are uninformed and think vaping is some harmless fun their kids are into, when, it’s not. If you have any questions, come in and speak to me.”

Think they’re lying? Call us ■ Joe Dreyer Do you think you’re being lied to? If you want to find out, call 083 256 3111. That’s where the Voice Stress Analysis (VSA) test comes in. And no, it’s not a polygraph. It’s similar, but analyses slight fluctuations (changes) in the frequency of a person’s vocal cord

vibrations. It is quite ingenious really. When you speak, your vocal cords and your trachea vibrate at a certain frequency. When under stress, the frequency of those vibrations changes as your throat tightens up, increasing the pitch of your voice so slightly that it is often not audible to the people around you, or even to the person being interviewed.

The United States military developed this technology back in the 1960’s, because there were times that the people they needed to interview were not physically in the room to be hooked up to a polygraph machine. Law enforcement agencies use this technology today to analyse phone calls, especially 911 calls. The test is 99.4% accurate in detecting deception and forms a vital part of the interview toolbox when looking to recruit new employees. It also assists in gaining a better picture of suspicious behaviour among existing employees at your workplace. “The VSA test is an accurate deception detector and can tell you exactly that a person is not being entirely honest about either their background or their involvement in a specific activity or event. Like the traditional polygraph test though, it is not a magic machine that points out criminals or liars, it provides you definitive proof that a situation or a person warrants further investigation or eliminates the need all together,” explained Henco Delport, co-owner of Limpopo Truth Verification Services.

Delport joined Limpopo Truth Verification Services with his sister, Rona McGaffin, who started up the company earlier this year. This brother and sister duo both devoted a large portion of their lives to active military service with Henco having retired from the SANDF as a Lieutenant Colonel after 19 years in active duty and Rona attaining the rank of Major. Tzaneen locals will remember her from her time in the Letaba Commando. You can reach Rona on 083 256 3111 or Henco on 082 332 0416 to book a consultation. All their details are available in the advert below this article. “We help clients with interviews to determine whether a potential candidate is being completely honest about their certifications, or the reasons they left their previous employment, their lifestyle habits or any other specifics an employer might wish to gain clarity on.

Agter hulle is Eiland Rolbalklub se bestuurslid, Marie Gouws.

Mafarana acts out against bullies ■ Roelof de Jonge The Mafarana Combined School is situated in Mafarana which is 10km outside Letsitele and is part of the Mafarana Circuit in the Mopani West District. The teachers and learners of this school made their voices

heard on the 21st of April when they acted out against bullying by making the surrounding community aware that the death of Lufuno Mavhunga from Mbilwi High School in Limpopo was not unseen. The teachers and the learners all wore black clothes for this occasion.

Merensky wen nouliks dié rugbyrillerstryd ■ Roelof de Jonge

Plucky Plasies conquer the tricky trail ■ Roelof de Jonge From the 29th of May until the 2nd of April, 10 from Merensky High School learners who are The President’s Award-candidates (TPA) braved the 80km Fanie Botha hiking trail between Graskop and Sabie. With this final walk eight learners, Emma Dalrymple-Hay, Ilanie de Bruyn, Larisa Vogel, Mariesa Schutte, Michaela Elbrecht, Palesa Shiluvane, Victory Mathebula and Anke Venter qualified for the gold award. The other learner, Una Radzuma, joined along on the silver level for the fun of it which added to the team spirit. The group was accompanied by Strauss Koekemoer and Klippe Venter and Carmen Nagel. After a bus ride of almost three hours, the brave hikers were more than ready to tackle the trail. The first day’s hike of 9,7km between the Caylon and Maritzbos huts was comfortably completed with the team arriving at midday at the overnight point. The second day presented some more challenges. The 13.3km trial to the Stables hut kept the candidates busy for a full seven hours. The 16.3km route to the MacMac overnight hut normally presents a challenge to hikers. Icy winds and heavy rain showers on the third day of this level nine challenge made inroads on everyone’s mental and physical preparation. Their sore muscles finally got to relax next to the fireplace, where Strauss Koekemoer accidentally ‘sacrificed’ two pairs of sneakers in an attempt of drying them out.

On the Sunday morning the hikers bid the MacMac hut farewell at 06:00 and reached their destination at the Graskop hut by 13:00. However, the bus driver was not so successful in finding the hut and the weary hikers had to walk another 3km to reach town.

Tired but satisfied these sticklers embarked on the return journey. Once their journals are ready, this group will also be able to add their names to the already 24 golden candidates of Merensky High School.

The TPA candidates and guides on route the Fanie Botha hiking trial. They are Michaela Elbrecht, Ilanie de Bruyn, Anke Venter, Larissa Vogel, Una Radzuma, Mariesa Schutte, Palesa Shiluvane, Strauss Koekemoer, Carmen Nagel, Victory Mathebula and Emma Dalrymple-Hay.

They rocked the lockdown blues away ■ Joe Dreyer Tzaneen’s only active local rock and blues band had crowds on the edges of their seats this past weekend when they performed at the beautifully revamped Stasie pub and restaurant in Hamawasha. Rock Regime comprises of vocalist extraordinaire, Monika Marais, drummer Aldrae van Vuuren, rhythm guitarist Darron van Vuuren, bassist Bennie Bezuidenhout and vocalist, lead guitarist and frontman, Helgard de Villiers. The band is known for their lengthy setlists of blues and old school rock stretching back from the 1960’s to early and in some cases even late 90’s. Rock Regime are regular performers at local restaurants and provide easy background listening during meals and events with the ability to really crank up the volume and get the party started until late in the evenings. This past weekend’s gig however was an early afternoon show as part of a biker gathering at the Stasie. The vibe was fantastic and the music framed the braaivleis fires perfectly despite the obligatory social distancing and mask wearing protocols. Regular bassist, Bezuidenhout was unable to attend the gig and the band called on the musicianship of another local bass playing legend, Doulton Robson, to fill in the gaps. And fill in the gaps he most certainly did. Marais’ vocal range was put on show in spectacular fashion as she silenced the bustling venue with her beautiful rendition of Nazareth’s iconic ballad “Love Hurts”. If you would like to book this versatile band for your next event, corporate function or wedding, contact Helgard De Villiers on 083 260 5123 or visit their Facebook page Rock Regime for further information.

Retribution for Reds against fairer Blues ■ Joe Dreyer Merensky’s girls’ hockey teams hosted their Tzaneen neighbours to a series of games on their breath-taking aqua pitch on Wednesday. The hosts seemed a little star struck as they struggled to find their footing against a relentless Vossie onslaught. In the first of the matches the u/14 girls suffered a threegoal defeat when their clash ended in 3-0 to the visitors. The Reds continued their siege with another victory over the u/15 Plasies by a single goal in a match that ended 1-0 in their favour. Merensky pulled up their boot strings in the much-anticipated u/16 matchup and held their ground against a formidable opponent eager for another win. The Blues however upset the game plan and answered each of the Vossies’ two goals with one of their own to hold them to a 2-2 draw. When the First Teams faced-off on the blue carpet it had already passed sunset and the mood was set for a game that would not soon be forgotten. Both teams were well prepared and in the end the Vossies had to pull all the stops to out-manoeuvre the agile Plasie keeper. After what can only be described as four gruelling chukkas, it would eventually be the Vossies who walked off the grounds victorious with a 3-0 tally.

The world is his stage ■ Roelof de Jonge

Liam O’Brien, the well-known 18-year-old dancer from The Dance Place in Tzaneen, competed in the Dance World Cup (DWC) South African Qualifying event from the 3rd until the 8th of May in Centurion. O’Brien surprised friend and foe with his immaculate performances in the two items he performed in. It was in the prodigy routine item where he outshone his rivals in the senior solo contemporary division with a solid first place, scoring 84,7 percent. O’Brien performed two solo dance routines of which one was acrobatics and the other a contemporary piece. He scored yet another top three position for the senior solo acrobatics dance item with his dance piece titled “The Clock is Ticking”. Here the judges handed O’Brien a third place with a score of 80,3 percent. O’Brien qualified with flying colours for the prestigious Dance World Cup Finals in Telford, England. The date for this event is from the 9th until the Liam O’Brien

20th of August this year, although the last day’s date still needs to be confirmed as stated by the organizers. Annemieke Osmers, owner of The Dance Place, has been O’Brien’s instructor for the past six years. She elaborated more on the whereabouts of the Dance World Cup qualifying event. “The Dance World Cup is an international dance competition spanning the globe with more than 21 000 competitors from over 48 countries competing at qualifiers or at the finals,” she explained ecstatically. “This competition platform is where the ‘cream of the crop’ gathers to showcase their dance talent in front of a judges panel, national and international, who are all wellknown in the dance industry.” The dancers stand a chance to qualify and attend the Dance World Cup Finals. To qualify for the finals, the dancers must achieve a percentage of 70 percent and higher. “Unfortunately, there was no Dance World Cup Finals last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. O’Brien is a natural and a very gifted dancer. His natural abilities are characteristics of a dancer who started from early childhood, yet he only took up dancing at the start of his teenage years.” The competition is specially aimed at children and youth dancers between the ages of 5 and 25. All dancers who qualified and are part of the SA team, will perform live in England, or if there are travel restrictions, will compete in the

finals though a video entry. Bulletin spoke to O’Brien after his sterling performance the past weekend in Centurion. “At the age of 13 I started to go for dance lessons. It all started after I watched a popular dance series called Dance Moms, I was intrigue and decided that I want to try my hand at dancing. I have never been into sport really, but I do like to be active and dancing is the ideal workout for me.” “My sister Courtney, also danced for a short while and during that time I attended a couple of her dance competitions which could have been the actual trigger of my interest in dancing.” But what does it take for a dancer of his level to be competitive? “The hard work to compete at this level is immense and I spend hours training and preparing. Because when I arrive at a competition, I want to be fully prepared and ready to compete,” he said. “There are quite a few dancers who inspire me like Briar Nolet, Brady Farrar and Derek Piquette to name a few. My ambition is to become a qualified dance instructor and open my own dance studio one day.”

Reds dominate Badgers in club league openers ■ Joe Dreyer The blistering cold mountain air heralded the first signs of a winter fast approaching on Friday night as the girls’ hockey teams from Stanford Lake College prepared to tackle their neighbours from down the mountain. Ben Vorster sent three of their teams, the U/14, U/15 and their First Team to take on the mighty Badgers in a club league match which would serve as the season opener for the mountain dwellers. The Vossies and the Badgers are the only two local high school teams who participate in the club league, as well as the schools’ league and because not enough of the teams have played their opening games thus far this season, the log standings are currently vague, but by next month, hockey supporters should have a clearer indication of where their teams stand following some of the games that will be played in the coming weeks. Both the girls’ teams seemed eager to hit the pitch after a few months away due to Covid. The lack of playtime was evident in

both sides who struggled to find their rhythm in the first chukka and continued to struggle with communication for the most part of the respective games. Ultimately though, it would be the mighty Reds who managed to find their feet first and ultimately gain the upper hand in all three their matches. In the Badgers’ defence however, the Reds had already started their season two weeks prior, with warmup matches against Merensky, which gave them time to shake off some of the rust. The U/14 Girls bowed their knees to the Reds with five goals to zero while their U/16 counterparts were dismissed with eight goals to nil. At around 18:00 the senior girls took to the pitch. From the word go, the Reds launched relentless attacks on their hosts’ backline and soon, the Badgers were two goals down. But the second chukka brought with it a renewed energy to the already dynamic Vossies attack which seemed to completely blow the air of the Stanfordian sails. Goal after goal saw the Reds increase their lead to finally take the match home with 11 goals to nil.
