MUNICIPALITY CONDONES WATER FROM FIRE HYDRANTS For many months residents of Tzaneen and Letsitele have reported seeing many trucks filling JoJo tanks with thousands of litres of water directly from the fire hydrants in town, to transport it to the townships. In November 2020 the GTM told us they had a list of approved service providers who were allowed to take water from the hydrants and deliver to the villages. We have still not received that list and the situation is now out of control. Read more on page 4.

Hundreds of illegal electricity connections were removed in the Lulekani area on the 11th of May last week when Eskom moved into the township. The technicians in Phalaborwa decended upon the Lulekani settlers and removed illegal connections from 50 homes resulting in revenue losses of more than R100 000 per month. In a conversation with Bulletin, Mothogoane Lethekwane, the Energy Trading Manager at Eskom Phalaborwa, said that Eskom loses around R430 000 per month at the Lulekani Sewerage Works feeder. This, according to him amounts to R5.1 million per annum which is lost in revenue as their meters reflect that they are losing energy of about 427 687 GWH per year at Lulekani alone. “This feeder contains more than 1 500 customers that are stealing electricity,” he stated. Approximately 20 round poles and two drums of illegally connected conductor cable was removed following complaints from members of the public about the dangerous wires that were running everywhere in the settlement. According to Lethekwane, illegal connections injure and kill many people every year, while countless others are severely injured from electrocution. “People often think electricity theft is a victimless crime. We only realize the high price of this crime when we lose loved ones, often young children, who are killed by electrocution, something

that has happened in Lulekani before, when they accidentally encounter live electricity wires from illegal connections,” said Lethekwane. “It is therefore our civic duty as the public to refrain from using illegal means of getting electricity and to report those who are involved in this crime to authorities.” He mentioned that Illegal connections are also the leading cause of unplanned power outages, better known as load-shedding. Lethekwane mentioned that the feeder in Lulekani was operating at an average of 36% loss on both revenue collection and availability. “The feeder is within the top 5 of the poor performing feeders within the Selati CNC and it is also on the Eskom schedule of the ‘Load curtailment/reduction’ program to mitigate the overloading.” He explained that network overloads because it is carrying more users than what it was designed for. Eskom installs circuit breakers that switch off when the load reaches dangerous levels‚ which prevents the transformers from exploding. But sometimes residents bypass these safety features, and the transformers eventually explode. Lethekwane said that Eskom would continue to monitor the area to prevent reoccurrences, and that they would engage law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators who illegally connected those houses. He also urged the community to report illegal connections by sending an anonymous SMS to the crime line on 32211 or calling 0800 1127 22.

Rhino Court: Four more sentenced

Both the R40 and the R71 were brought to a standstill while recovery operations were underway on Sunday, the 16th of May, and Wednesday morning, 19th of May, respectively following horrific motor vehicle accidents. Five people died when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and crashed into a tree near Mohlabetsi Lodge, between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, on Sunday morning, the 16th of May. “The driver of a sedan lost control, veered off the road, and hit a tree. Four people were certified dead on the scene and one person was rushed to Tintswalo Hospital but succumbed to their injuries on arrival,” said department spokesperson Matome Moremi Taueatsoala. According to reports the group were heading back to Hoedspruit, after spending their Saturday night in Phalaborwa, when the accident occurred at around 03:45 that morning. The severity of the ac-

cident only became apparent when images of the scene surfaced on social media. In one image, the back half of the VW Jetta is seen lying on its side, whilst in another the other half is seen attached to a tree. Preliminary investigations have revealed that reckless driving may have been the cause of the accident. In an unrelated matter, five people were rushed to hospital by different EMS services as three vehicles collided with each other on the R71 on Wednesday, 19th of May. The accident occurred just a few kilometres from the Phalaborwa town entrance in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Emergency services who were on scene have confirmed that no person died, however, one person had been transported to Tzaneen Mediclinic as they were critically injured and needed immediate care. The police have confirmed that they have opened a case of negligent and reckless driving, and investigations were underway.

Four more people were sentenced by the Rhino Court in last week bringing the total to six, since its reopening on the 1st of April this year. The South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomed the finalization of the two long-running rhino poaching trials by the Skukuza Regional Court on Tuesday, the 18th of May. According to a report from the spokesperson of prosecution in Mpumalanga, Monica Nyuswa, one rhino poacher was sentenced on the 14th of May whilst three, including a former SANParks employee, were sentenced on Monday, the 17th of May. Nyuswa stated that one of the convicts, Nito Mathebula, who is also a Mozambican national, was arrested in Tshokwane Section in January 2019 while hunting in the park illegally and two of his accomplices managed to evade the arrest. “He was found guilty of trespassing in a National Park, breaking the Immigration Act, and the killing of a rhino. He was sentenced to an effective 13 years in custody after being found guilty on three poaching related charges,” stated Nyuswa. According to Nyuswa, Phineas Dinda, a former SANParks full corporal in the Rangers Corps, was arrested in Skukuza as he was trying to exit the park, whilst his accomplices, Arlindo Manyike from Mozambique, and Alfa Gwebana, a South African citizen, were arrested in Tshokwane Section a few months after Mathebula, in May 2019 following a tipoff. “All three persons were found guilty of trespassing in a national park, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition, and axe. Manyike was also found guilty of contravening the Immigration Act. They were all sentenced to an effective sixteen years in prison, respectively,” she concluded. The Managing Executive of KNP, Gareth Coleman, welcomed the sentences saying that they would like to congratulate the prosecution, SAPS and the hard-working dedicated Rangers Corps who arrested the suspects and presented credible evidence that led to the sentences imposed by the courts. He added that with the opening of the Skukuza Court again, a significant increase in convictions is being noticed. “We expect this trend to increase, and poachers may find short term benefit from poaching, but they will be apprehended impacting on their own, their families and community livelihoods.”

Multi-million homage to another failure - The expensive white elephant ■ Joe Dreyer There is a lot of confusion over the massive building structure situated behind Unicorn Preparatory School between the school’s grounds and the Mopani District Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre (the fire brigade) in Tzaneen. The sheer size of the structure dwarfs that of the dilapidated Letaba Boulevard building in the CBD. Its raw steel reinforcements grow out of incomplete concrete pillars to pierce the skies three storeys high. Staircases lead to more staircases which in turn lead nowhere. Electrical conduit and trunking for light fittings hang from incomplete walls and ceilings. The entire site is overgrown, fences and gates brandishing “Construction site do not enter” signs lay flat on the ground amid shoulder-high grass and Lantana. Next to the structure 40 pallets of neatly packed face bricks protrude from heavy overgrowth, and to the side approximately 20 more pallets of building bricks stand crumbling. In 2015 Bulletin visited this site and we were able to drive all the way up to the building. On Tuesday this week, we could barely pass the reservoir which stands 100m from the entrance. There are visible signs that this site is regularly visited by either vagrants seeking shelter from the elements, or possibly criminal elements. A single footpath lined with used polystyrene takeaway packages leads all the way from the reservoir to the structure. This path is not overgrown. To shed some light on the matter we dug into the archives of the Mopani District and found a tender document dated January 2013. The tender was for the Mopani District Municipality office building and access road – main contract. Tender documents were available as of the Friday, 18th of January 2013 and the contract consisted of building, civil, electrical, mechanical and road works. Prospective tenderers were requested to meet the engineer at the site of the existing disaster management centre (fire brigade) on Tuesday, the 22nd of January 2013. We could not find a tender amount for this tender, but we contacted the spokesper-

son for the Mopani District Municipality, Odas Ngobeni. This is where the details of the project and the various tenders became hazy. Initially we asked Ngobeni what the building was intended to be used as, how much the tender for the project was and why it has not been completed. “The project is worth over R50 million, intended to provide accommodation for staff of Mopani District Municipality. We have issued a claim against the contractor by the name of Kgafela who has in turn issued a counterclaim. The matter is before the court. Once the legal issue is resolved, an assessment will be done by a structural engineer and that technical report will guide the Council in determining the way forIn the distance, the existing Mopani District Disaster Management centre (the fire brigade) can be seen standing as a witness to another multi-million Rand failure. ward. Still no successor for Makushane throne ■ Billy Sibuyi

Dozens of people were packed into the Ba-Phalaborwa Traditional Headquarters in Makushane during the official funeral service for the late Makushane ruler, Kgoshi Makatikela Andries Malatji (Makhushane III) on Saturday, 15th of May. Kgoshi Makatikele Andries Malatji died in hospital after he was rushed from his home in Hoedspruit to Tintswalo Hospital in Acornhoek on Saturday, 1st of May. The Kgoshi who died at 59, was the leader of the tribal communities of Mashishimale, Maseke, Selwane, and a part of Majeje. It is not yet known who the successor to his throne will be. Representing the local mines of Ba-Phalaborwa, Foskor’s, James Morothoba, stated that the late chief was a visionary and has crafted a silhouette puzzle of which they have tried “Bit by bit to complete and even though he is now gone, we will continue to complete the puzzle to have a complete picture for the community of Ba-Phalaborwa”. “Kgoshi Makushane the third believed in the model that there is no business, without its host communities and we will continue to push his ideals forward of educating the young child, create employment, and create small businesses to make sure the community is sustainable,” noted Morothoba. The Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor, Pule Shayi, before he introduced the speaker of the day, COGHSTA MEC, Basikop Makamu, mentioned that the late Kgoshi Malatji played an instrumental role in strength-

ening the working relationship between the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and the Ba-Phalaborwa Traditional leaders and he also hailed the late Kgoshi as a unifier whose works preceded him. “His legacy as an agent of development will live long after his departure in the projects he was involved. He was actively involved in many economic development projects, which alleviated poverty and upgraded the standard of living of the community of Makhushane,” noted Makamu. Makamu said that among the community development legacy projects that Kgoshi Malatji Makatikela and the Traditional Council were involved in are 18 day care centres, four drop-in centres, two disability centres, and two oldage disability centres.

“Community Projects such as a Community Crèche and Community Bakery. Plenty Irrigation Schemes and 10 Clinics, Plenty of RDP houses, provision of food parcels to 1 000 households at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, annual awards in the form of cash for the best performing schools

during Heritage Day, and two villages, Boelang and Makhushane Camp was established under his watch,” stated Makamu. “Now that Kgoshi Malatji is no more, I urge the Royal Family to unite around his legacy and in finding his successor”.

Codesa-Gate comes Fire hydrants for water trucks under the Hawks’ eye

- Free water from paid hydrants ■ Joe Dreyer Thousands of litres of water is tapped from the fire hydrants in Tzaneen and Letsitele daily. This water is transported in large JoJo tanks on the beds of trucks, from the various sites in these towns, to areas in villages outside of town, where it allegedly being sold to residents who do not have running water. In November last year, Bulletin first wrote about this situation and we were told by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s (GTM) communications department that they not only knew about the practice but condoned it as well. In a response on questions sent to the communications department, we were told that there was a list of service providers permitted to access the water from the fire hydrants and transport it to the rural areas. We were also told that these service providers would be working under supervision of trained GTM personnel. The GTM also said that they were aware

that some people were illegally collecting water at these fire hydrants, but the municipality was unable to prevent them from doing so, as there was a water shortage and constitutionally everyone had the right to access clean water. We requested a list of these registered service providers on the 18th of November 2020 and to date we have not received this list. Yesterday (Thursday the 20th of May 2021) we requested this list again, and the communications department promised to find said list and present it to us. At the time of going to print however, we were still waiting. In the meantime, we have posted videos of broken fire hydrants and continue to receive reports of up to 40 trucks gathering water at fire hydrants in Impala Street and various other points in the new industrial area in Tzaneen every day. Some of these trucks return to refill their tanks, up to seven times per day. We also received photographs of water gushing continuously from fire hydrants in Letsitele, where these supposed service providers were also filling their JoJo tanks from. Although the GTM claims that the water is not being resold in the villages, we have it on good authority that this is the case. We have also not seen one trained GTM staff member manning any of these hydrants and we doubt that the municipality would be able to provide a detailed report on the exact amount of litres these trucks have thus far filled from the hydrants. We also want to know what these service providers are being paid to assist the municipality in water distribution as the GTM apparently does not have enough water trucks to provide this service themselves. We have also requested a timeframe for this contract as there is no clear indication on how long these trucks will be tapping water from hydrants in town. A final question we require clarity on, is why these trucks do not fill up from hydrants in Nkowankowa or Lenyenye considering the distance to travel would be much less. Could it be that those hydrants have no water? If so, what would happen in the case of a fire in those areas?

■ Jeff Jackson

It is not clear at this stage who requested an investigation, but the HAWKS swooped into the offices of the GTM two weeks ago. It came to light that they were investigating the infamous Codesa-Mulati roads projects which made headlines last year after the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, stopped the tenders after discovering irregularities. The matter resulted in a lengthy battle which ended in the High Court and an eventual ruling in favour of the municipality. Through his actions, Thapelo Matlala saved the Tzaneen ratepayers an estimated R40 million. Matlala cancelled the tenders after it emerged that Tshiamiso Trading, the contractor who won the tender bid, misrepresented figures during the tendering pro-

cess and thereafter demanded more money to complete the project. According to sources the Hawks seized documents from the Engineering Department, Finance and related sections which were responsible for the construction of the two paved roads. Officials who were not on duty were called into work so they could provide necessary documents in relation to the projects. It was after Council suspended Matlala, he later won the matter in the labour court where he was reinstated. The matter was then referred to the South Gauteng High Court where Judge George Phatudi ruled in favour of the GTM and the matter seemed to be finalized. The arrival of the Hawks in connection with the matter, however, reveals that the waters have not yet calmed.

400 More vaccinated ■ Jeff Jackson

The Limpopo Department of Health which has clearly been unable to adequately address the shortfalls at any of the hospitals in the province they manage, this week announced that they would be vaccinating 500 000 people in order to fight off the Covid-19 virus. Hundreds of pensioners and public servants were jabbed this week. The first round of phase two of the vaccination process in Mopani was held at the Dr CN Phatudi hospital in Tzaneen and in Capricorn it was held at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital on Monday. According to spokesperson for the Department of Health in Limpopo, Neil Shikwambana, as the province they are aiming to vaccinate more than 500 000 people in this second phase of the process. People who attended the vaccination centres were the elderly and emergency workers such as police, traffic officers and medical personnel.

Shikwambana said that on Monday they managed to vaccinate only a little over 400 people at the Dr CN Phatudi facility, while at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital the numbers were slightly higher. “In the first phase of the vaccination process we managed to vaccinate about 33 000 people throughout the province and this time we are working with the target of 52 000. We will continue with the roll out process until we reach the target of 500 000 and there are still more roll outs to come. On Tuesday, the roll out of the vaccine will continue at Dr CN Phatudi and Pietersburg while Mankweng will also join.” Shikwambana further said that there were six hospitals chosen for the rollout which are Donald Fraser in Vhembe, St Ritas Hospital in Sekhukhune, Mankweng in Capricorn, Dr CN Phatudi and Pietersburg Provincial Hospital. However, he could not say when the vaccination process in the province will end.

Help only for black-owned business ■ Billy Sibuyi The current Tourism Transformation Fund (TTF) which at times has received much criticism, is set to be restructured to make it more accessible and efficient to businesses. This was announced by the Tourism Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, during her department’s budget vote speech on Tuesday, the 18th of May. “The Department together with the private sector and other stakeholders, worked together to develop the Tourism Sector Recovery Plan (TSRP). The Plan is anchored on three interlinked pillars or strategic themes: protecting and rejuvenating supply, reigniting demand, and strengthening, enabling capability for long term sustainability,” she stated. “The main focus of our programmes in this financial year will be on the implementation of the TSRP. She said several programmes would now be implemented in efforts to accelerate transformation of the sector, stimulate investment, and resource mobilization. She also said that the department’s budget for the financial year 2021/22 was about R2 429 Billion, of which R1.2 Billion would be allocated to the South African Tourism entity. “Protecting and rejuvenating supply entails the support for the protection of core tourism infrastructure and assets. Our programmes have been designed to make this a reality. Our total infrastructure commitment is just under R700 million over a five-year period,” she said. “To date an amount of R270 million of the funds has been made available to Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA)

who serves as the implementing agent for the department’s infrastructure programme. A further R222 million has been budgeted for this financial year.” The minister stated that during the medium-term, the Destination Development Programme (DDP) would continue with the implementation of a tourism infrastructure maintenance programme of state-owned assets to protect and rejuvenate tourism supply. “The focus of this work is on improving and upgrading sites of heritage significance including liberation heritage, national parks, botanical gardens as well as rural and township precincts.” She also stated that her department has prioritized the implementation of just over 100 tourism infrastructure initiatives across the country with a further 30 community-based projects and that this work was largely funded through the Working for Tourism Expanded Public Works Programme. Kubayi-Ngubane also gave an update on the Tourism Equity Fund, which was under criticism, saying their lawyers were studying reasons for an interdict after AfriForum and Solidarity filed a court application against the department. The tourism minister has said that she will not drop her policy agenda to transform the predominantly white-owned tourism industry. She was referencing in defense of the financial relief provided by her department only to blackowned companies in the face of a court challenge by AfriForum and trade union Solidarity.

She said the fund, which was launched in January, was designed to provide a combination of debt finance and grant funding to facilitate equity acquisition as well as new project development in the tourism sector by enterprises with 51% black ownership. “The combined value of the Tourism Equity Fund

at just over R1.2 billion inclusive of debt from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) and its commercial banking partner. However, the processing of applications has been interdicted by the court. Once again, the effort to transform the economy to make it more inclusive is being frustrated.”

Municipal workers R20M for 20 boreholes want another increase ■ Joe Dreyer

■ Jeff Jackson Downing of tools and taking to the streets by municipal workers is a certainty again this year after the Independent Municipal and Allied Union (IMATU) said they do not agree to a revised 3% salary increase from an initial 2,8% offer by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). Instead the unions demanded a R2 500 or 7% salary increase across the board. The union also rejected the lack of benefits such housing and medical allowances. The union also said that they were going to join hands with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) who are demanding R4 000 increment across the board as well as a single year salary negotiation circle. The union also stated that they are prepared to work hand-in-hand with other stakeholders to improve the working conditions of workers contracted to the Empowered Public Works Programme (EPWP). In a circular sent to branches for discussion before inputs could be forwarded, the union said, “SALGA has indicated that they will revise the offer from 2,8% to 3% if the unions would consider a proposal on the freeze of benefits and conditions of service. It however stated that this should be seen not as a formal, but rather an attempt to explore options of settlement.”

Johan Koen IMATU Secretary

The union, through its secretary, Johan Koen, said the employer further highlighted preference for a multiyear freeze on increases on benefits for year two and three, if the trade unions will consider into a multiyear agreement. IMATU and SAMWU are demanding a single year agreement on increases and both unions had indicated that they will not consider SALGA`s multiyear agreement. “IMATU cannot consider SALGA`s multiyear agreement as they had not made any proposals on what increases should be implemented in year two and year three of such an agreement. The trade unions had decided to consolidate their demands into a single trade union demand in order to make progress. SALGA had not so far said anything about the sanitised offer of 3%,” stated the circular. SAMWU spokesperson, Papiki Mohale, said the union is in the process of consulting members and said that it is only after that process that their position will be solidified. He said they were still negotiating and their final decision will be informed by that process. SAMWU demands a R4 000 increase, a R15 000 sectoral minimum wage, R3 500 housing allowance, 80% contribution by employer, six months paternity leave and 25% pension contribution by employer. On the other side, IMATU demands on top of the 7% or R2 500 increase across the board, they also want R2 000 housing allowance, a single year wage agreement with scope of covering EPWP workers. SALGA spokesperson, Sivuyile Mambato, said SALGA had not yet made public the revised offer and negotiations are to begin towards the end of June. Editor’s Comment: Is it not strange that when the workers applied for the positions at the municipalities which they currently hold, they agreed to the salary and cost to company offered by the employer, and now, despite the very obvious failures regarding service delivery, they embark on violent riots and strikes annually? It appears that the dynamics of the employer / employee relationship has been completely contorted where the employee now earns more than the employer. The average Municipal Manager salary in South Africa is R 4 519 152 per year or R 2 318 per hour. Entry level positions start at R 445 470 per year while most experienced workers make up to R 9 493 908 per year. The average salary for a Police Captain in South Africa is around R321 000 per year. Are we seeing the problem here yet?

Millions have been spent by the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) on the drilling and maintenance of boreholes under the guise of improving sustainable water provision for all communities. The DA will write to the Public Protector to request an urgent investigation into the dodgy borehole development by the MDM. As far back as 2017, borehole development and refurbishment was prominent in the municipality’s Adjustment Budget. A staggering R122 million was budgeted for and during the February 2017 Adjustment Budget, it was topped up with a further R32 000 000. This brings the total amount of taxpayer money allocated to boreholes in 2017 to R154 million. The DA has been investigating the matter over the last few years and in a statement released to the media yesterday morning (Thursday the 20th of May 2021) they expressed their concern over the issue and said that they would be reporting the Mopani District Municipality to the Public Protector for malfeasance (wrongdoing) and corruption on borehole development. “The DA was overly concerned that the municipality spent so much money on this because council received no corroborating reports on the number, GPS positioning or other vital information for these boreholes. We were further concerned that there was no justification for these boreholes or how our communities’ benefit from these allocations.” In the Adjustment Budget of 2018/19, R23 million was again allocated for borehole repairs. The DA believes that borehole development is the one place where corruption seems to flourish. “It seems

that this item on the annual MDM budget is an ideal hunting ground for corrupt cadres and their political connected friends.” In the rollover report tabled in 2019 (Item SCD/14/2019), R12 million was spent for drought relief on borehole development / refurbishment including, the development of a new borehole at Mphagani village by Mashale Construction at the cost of R749 986.30, and the refurbishment of a borehole at Ga-Daniel by Lokolong Plant Hire for R538 200.00. It seems that no specific amount was pre-approved for the development of new boreholes and no borehole number was provided as it must be registered on the database kept by the Department of Water and Sanitation. A year later, in the Adjustment Budget of 2019/20 which was tabled, a further R53.5 million was utilized for emergency water provision in the rural areas in terms of refurbishment of boreholes. During the virtual Special Council meeting, which was held on Monday the 15th of June 2020, a special Adjustment Budget was tabled to spend a further R20.7 million on 20 borehole projects under Capital Expenditure. “The DA believes that the drilling of boreholes, refurbishment and ground water development is the preferred way in which millions of Rands are disappearing into certain well-connected pockets. We are very concerned that with the population growth and with no planning for the development of more dams, the people in Mopani District will run out of water soon, especially during persistent droughts. We call on the Public Protector to investigate the excessive and irrational spending on boreholes and to make findings as to who really benefits from this corrupt spending.”

Man sets girlfriend alight ■ Jeff Jackson A 30-year-old suspect appeared before the Lenyenye magistrate court in Maake outside Tzaneen today, Friday the 21st of May 2021, after he was arrested on Wednesday for the alleged murder of a 35-yearold woman who was said to be his girlfriend. The incident allegedly took place at Tickyline village in the early hours of Thursday morning, the 6th of May 2021, at about 03:00. It is alleged that the victim, Lindiwe Mogale, accompanied her boyfriend to buy a few litres of petrol at a filling station in Nkowankowa. The couple thereafter proceeded to the boyfriend's house at Tickyline village but on the way, they reportedly engaged in a heated argument. The quarrel apparently continued when they arrived at the house. The suspect then poured petrol over his girlfriend and set the house alight. The

neighbours were alarmed by the frantic screams and immediately went to the house. Upon arrival, they reportedly found that the victim was engulfed by the fire but managed to put it out. Police and medical emergency personnel were summoned. The victim was taken to hospital with serious burn wounds but the suspect had fled the scene. Cases of attempted murder and arson were opened and the police commenced with a manhunt for the suspect who had already reportedly fled to the Gauteng Province. The victim succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Friday, the 14th of May 2021 and the attempted murder case was consequently converted into murder. The suspect was arrested two nights ago, on Wednesday the 19th of May 2021, after he handed himself over to the police at Maake. At the time of going to print we had not received news on the outcome of the court appearance.

The first and junior soccer teams of Merensky High School took on the teams of King’s Court on Tuesday the 18th of May. Merensky’s senior team bounced back from their two previous defeats to win their encounter by 2-1, while the juniors comprehensively beat their opponents with a 4-2 victory. On the 10th of May, Merensky’s senior side played against Stanford Lake College. The Stanfordians however showcased their finesse and flair to won by 5 goals to 1.

The senior team of the Plasies lost out narrowly for a victory against the visiting side of Eric Louw on Saturday the 15th of May. Eric Louw won by 4-3. Tuesday’s winning match against the Kings Court team seemed just to be the confidence booster for their next encounter. That was until the Department of Education prohibited all schools contact sports, including training sessions, for soccer, rugby and netball to prevent the so-called third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic spreading further amongst school children.

Tough tour yields single win for Limpopo ■ Roelof de Jonge The Limpopo country districts team competed in the B-section of the South African country districts tournament at the magnificent course of the East London Golf Club. This tourney took place from the 10th until the 14th of May. James Vorster, the current club champion of Tzaneen Country Club and the winner of the Tzaneen Golf Open, prior in winning the club championship, also competed at this national event. In the fourth round on Thursday the 13th of May, Limpopo’s golfers had their highlight of the tour when they managed to beat the side of Mpumalanga. “What a day! After a huge battle, our golf players displayed their ‘never give up’ character with a great comeback in the morning to lead the match and hold their nerve to beat Mpumalanga. This was indeed a great team effort all around”, said Jean Sadie, operational manager of the Limpopo Golf Union. Vorster was in the company of some experienced golf players in his team. His team mates were Neil Rathmann who is the 2020 Toshiba Cup champi-

on, Jannie Bronkhorst who is also a former Toshiba Cup champion along with Thinus Labuschagne, Shaun Mouton, Adam Milanzi, Tiaan Dierdericks, Edwin Mackays and Malebana Pataki. But it was not all plain sailing for the Limpopo team as they met some formidable competition. On the first day, Monday the 10th of May, team Limpopo played against the side of Eastern Province for their first match. Eastern Province won by a mere point. On Tuesday, the 11th of May Limpopo faced off against the side of Border. The side of Border however had a field day to win by a comfortable margin, 7½ to Limpopo’s 4½. The Limpopo Vorster had a bye for the next round which gave them time to reflect on what needs to be done in order to pull off a win. It seems the day off had done Vorster and his teammates wonders as they went on to beat Mpumalanga 7 to 5 in an epic battle. In the final round however the side of the Southern Cape brought the Limpopo golfers back to earth with a bang by scoring a convincing win with a final score of 8½ to the 3½ of Limpopo.

Local frisbee players go to champs ■ Roelof de Jonge

Quick, think about a frisbee. Now think about American Football. Now combine the two. Lost you? That could be because you’ve either never played American Football, or the idea of frisbees usually accompanies the idea of beaches and bikinis. Either way, bringing the two together is a bit of a tough call for most South Africans. Speaking of tough; you know what else is tougher than you think? Tzaneen Ultimate Frisbee, or “TUF” for short. It is the brain child of Wian Fourie, a local enthusiast who decided he would introduce this “new” sport to the locals, and has since gained a rather significant following. But let’s get into more about how the sport is played and what it is all about. Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc or frisbee. The aim of the game is to have two teams of seven players compete on a playing field about the same length as a football field, but only narrower. At each end of the playing field there is an end zone. Each team must defend their end zone and to score a goal, one of the team’s players must catch the disc in the opponent’s end zone. See where the football reference comes in? The player with the disc is called the thrower. The thrower may not run with the disc. Instead, the player moves the disc by passing it to team-mates in any direction. The defensive team gets possession of the disc if an offensive team’s throw is not caught by a player of the same team. Then the defensive

team becomes the offensive team and can try to score in the opposite end zone. Ultimate Frisbee relies upon the spirit of the game that places the responsibility for fair play on every player. There are no referees. The players are solely responsible for following and enforcing the rules, even at World Championship level. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. Now granted, most would think that the world of competitive frisbee is just another social gathering, and they would be mistaken. In fact, did you know that there was a regulatory body in South Africa for this sport? The South African Flying Disc Association (SAFDA) represents disc sports in South Africa. According to the SAFDA representatives they are committed toward the developing of the sport in South Africa. The local club, TUF Guys, have selected a team of 15 participants who will compete in a national tournament set to take place in Soweto this weekend, the 22nd and 23rd of May. They have an established social media following on Facebook which you can join and follow at TUF – Tzaneen Ultimate Frisbee.

Here are some of the players of the TUF Guys. In front is Charnette Steele, Nicola Theron, Abri Bartlett, Neil Krogscheepers, Graham Taylor and Telanie van Renen.
