Bulletin was reliably informed that the sewerage pump station meant to pump the sewerage from the stands in the Eden Gate development to the processing plant - had no pumps connected! We contacted the spokespeople of both the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and the Mopani District Municipality for clarity and neither one of them could decide whose responsibility it was.

Many branches of the ANC converged at various schools and community halls this past weekend to nominate candidates to contest the upcoming local government elections set for October this year. The meetings were preceded by the election of the new members for the Branch Executive Committees (BEC) most of whom were shrouded in controversy. The first sitting of the Khujwana leg of the meetings was aborted when some members from the neighbouring Segabeng village protested that that there were irregularities as the number of the people in attendance did not equal the number of Identity Documents scanned before the meetings could commence. At the second leg, though the meetings finished on time, the issue escaped questioning. According to a branch member who attended the meetings, the main problem was when branch leaders tried to block people on the basis that their membership was not in good standing despite having been invited to attend the meetings. He said that it happened mostly when “attendees were those who are going to push the agenda of the day. They will do everything to have their way.”
On Sunday, dozens of party faithfuls consisting mostly of pensioners and members of one particular church at Ntwanano settlement, converged at the Khujwana School to nominate people who will fight it out for the position of a councillor in the ward. Khujwana falls under Ward 16 of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) and is comprised of Ntwanano, Segabeng, Haenertsburg, and Lepelle Northern Water. During the meetings which were preceded by a complete session of the Branch Executive Committee in which members interested in contesting the election were asked to declare their intentions, everything remained calm and proceeded on schedule. “It was like a farewell ceremony for the outgoing councillor, Roniel Rikhotso as most people attended to make sure there was a new change in leadership. Even the disruptors were calm,” said the member. After deliberations about the terms and conditions on the election of councillors, nominations for the three people who will contest the position of the councillor for the ward started. Collen Stolz led the pack with 55 votes, followed by Danisa Matukana with 25 votes and Thoiler Mboweni walked away with nine votes for the third position. The names will be submitted to the BEC and the
PEC of the ANC for a final decision. Collen Stoltz who resides at Ntwanano, is employed by the Department of Health and served as the chairperson of the branch for more than four consecutive terms. He was mostly supported by the youth. Danisa Matukana, who resides at Khujwana is member of the ANCWL and worked in the EPWP programme. She was seen as the successor to the councillorship, while Thoiler Mboweni works for Justice, is a church elder and long-time BEC member. At Lenyenye, the meeting also took place on Sunday at the community hall where the incumbent councillor, Justice Ramodipa, who had already served two consecutive terms could not secure the nomination. He thus accepted to be nominated as the Proportional Councillor where he will be contesting with other nominees from the other wards. Another meeting to nominate councillors took place at Khopo and Moime where nominations for the current councillors to serve another term nearly led to the collapse of the conference. The Lenyenye meeting was preceded by a protest by the community members who closed the road leading to the Thabine Water Works, accusing residents of Mosorong of blocking water passing through their village.

“He burned her alive” ■ Jeff Jackson
There was excitement at the Naphuno court precinct in Lenyenye last week when the man accused of pouring petrol on his partner before setting her alight was denied bail by the court. The crowds were composed of a group of women from Lenyenye and the nearby Tickeyline settlement. The women were there to support the family of the victim with placards denouncing abuse of women. Freddy Modiba (30) from Tickeyline, reportedly took his girlfriend, Lindiwe Mogale to a fuelling station where he bought a few litres of petrol. The couple returned home where an argument apparently ensued and Modiba is alleged to have poured the petrol over his girlfriend and throughout the home before igniting the fuel and locking Mogale inside the home. The murder highlighted the increase of Gender Based Violence in 084 4000 911 the province hence the attendance 98 98 911 members from the nearby of072 ANCWL 084 22 00 911
communities to support the family of the victim as well as to send the message out to communities that GBV cannot be tolerated. During the funeral of the victim at the Lenyenye cemetery speaker after speaker lamented the dangers of drugs which may have resulted in the crime. According to initial police reports, after the incident the suspect fled to Gauteng on the 6th of May but later returned and handed himself over to the police at Maake. There he remained in custody even after his first court appearance. Locals from the neighbourhood where the murder occurred, have alleged that the suspect was a drug addict. The police initially opened a case of attempted murder and when the victim succumbed to her wounds, the case was then escalated to murder. In another crime-related incident a man committed suicide after he allegedly raped a girl and later attacked the mother of the victim with a knife before taking his life at Joppi village outside Letsitele. Police investigations are ongoing.

Shoprite fire was more smoke than flames ■ Joe Dreyer At around 18:00 on Tuesday evening reports started circulating that Shoprite in Tzaneen was on fire. The fire brigade was dispatched to the Tzaneen Crossings centre and soon the reported fire was brought under control – the more apt description however would be “prevented from starting”. Whilst there was a small fire that caused a large column of smoke to bellow up from the rooftop of the Crossings Centre, the fire was extinguished by the centre’s operations manager, Eben Fichardt, using a fire extinguisher when the first sign of smoke was detected. In fact, the fire was out by the time the fire brigade arrived. As per usual, the Tzaneen Neighbourhood Watch, arrived in force to lend a hand where they could, and Northern Security kept a close eye on the scene from the parking lot. “The fire had somehow started in a small section of the Shoprite store’s receiving bay and before it could spread to the rest of the store, Fichardt had extinguished it. Some of the stock kept in this particular section of the storeroom, had started smouldering causing a lot of smoke which, without ventilation, had only one way to go which was up and out of the vent to the rooftop,” explained Alida Smit, General Manager of the Crossings Centre. “As a precautionary measure we contacted the fire brigade. Most of the damage to the storeroom is from the water and not flames. The fire detection system only activates once the flames reach the sprinkler system and sets it off. Because the fire was not big enough, and the heat not intense enough, this system did not activate. It is indicative of how small the fire was
when it was extinguished.” The stock stored in this room was Marie Biscuits and corn flakes cereal which started smouldering and caused the smoke making it appear as though the entire building was engulfed in flames. Bulletin was at the scene and it was clear that there was no danger of the situation escalating. The fire department opened the doors to the storeroom to allow for ventilation in order for most of the smoke to clear
so that they could enter and ensure that there was no chance of a fire reigniting. At the time of going to print the exact cause of the fire had not been determined. Shoprite reopened for business the following day, albeit a little later than usual. No staff members or patrons were injured during the incident. Follow us on Facebook at Far North Bulletin to watch the rerun of the live coverage of the fire.
No pumps for Eden’s sewerage ■ Joe Dreyer Whilst many people have invested in the Eden Garden development on the Agatha Road just outside Tzaneen, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) and the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) cannot decide whose to blame for the lack of sewerage connections to and from the stands inside the new development. Last month, in May, Bulletin received information that whilst there seemed to be sewerage connections to the stands in Eden Garden, there were no pumps in the pump station to pump the raw sewerage from the homes to the treatment plant. According to our source, the sewerage has been running directly into the ravine which runs past the development. Bulletin is interested to know how development can take place in an area when there is not adequate services supplied. Especially sewerage services. On the 13th of May, Bulletin sent an inquiry to the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala. On the the 18th of May we had still not received a response, but Ndlala assured us we would have information an hour later. The following day he said that he would provide us with the details following their investigations into the matter. On the 25th of may we again asked for a response on our query, to which Ndlala replied with “I’m currently in a meeting, I’ll visit the area with the water and sewer team afterwards.” On the 2nd of June we again asked for a response and this time Ndlala said, “the sewerage was connected, but pumps were removed to prevent theft. That is being handled now, as I said, we have a meeting with the
developer today.” In a telephonic discussion on the matter, he said that the MDM had removed the pumps from the pumpstation to prevent them from being stolen. We asked Ndlala who the developer was and he said that he would send us the details. We are still waiting. At the same time, 2nd of June, we sent the same inquiry to Odas Ngobeni, the spokesperson for the MDM. In his response he said that the responsibility lay with the GTM. “It is definitely not a team from MDM. GTM is responsible for the Sewerage Treatment Plant in Tzaneen, including the maintenance at the pumpstation,” he said. We referred the matter back to Ndlala who said that he would call Ngobeni and clarify the matter. We have since heard nothing further on the matter. In the meantime another reliable source who wishes to remain anonymous, alleged that the developer in charge of Eden Gate was not from Tzaneen and at the time of the proposed development roughly seven years ago, had approached a number of real estate agencies in Tzaneen and requested
them to buy into the development. Bulletin first reported on this development in 2017. We are in the process of investigating this matter and invite comments from the public, homeowners and investors on this issue. Please contact me on 072 930 1462 or joe@ farnorthbulletin.co.za. Boulevard building seems a little cleaner…
■ Joe Dreyer
In December 2016 the controversial businesswoman from Phalaborwa, Shamira Rinderknecht promised the town of Tzaneen that the eyesore which is the Letaba Boulevard, would receive a grand makeover worth R50 million. At the time, Bulletin spoke to Gauteng-based asset managers Level Heads who revealed plans for a complete upgrade of the derelict homeless haven. When we spoke to the project manager, Henlie Du Randt, she told us that the project would kick off with earthworks in September of 2017 and that it would be an open-air niche market centre catering for the more upmarket segment of the community. She went on to explain that the first drafts were drawn up and would include basement and undercover parking and that the project would create local job opportunities. Ironically she also said “We don’t want to struggle, when you look at the state of that building and the work that was done there over the years by local contractors, I think the Tzaneen community has been let down enough.” In conclusion the Gauteng-based contractor said very assuredly that the project would be completed in eight months’ time. It is now June 2021, four years have passed and nothing came of the planned project. Bulletin has continuously followed up on this supposed project and in 2018 we almost managed to interview
the notoriously media-shy Rinderknecht after she scheduled an appointment with us in the parking lot of the Letaba Boulevard building to “lay the rumours to rest”. An hour before the meeting however, she cancelled. Rinderknecht owns two other properties in Phalaborwa, namely the former Ivory Gardens and the Hans Merensky Resort and Spa. Both properties were purchased in around 2006 and both too, suffered similar fates to that of Letaba Boulevard. Bert Kruger sold Ivory Gardens to Rinderknecht when she unveiled plans to convert the building into a Formula One hotel. Her plans could not materialize however, due to the proximity of the airfield to the building which would not allow her to erect a multi-storey building on the site. Five months ago, in February, the Hans Merensky Resort and Spa was sold on auction for a little over R24 million. At the time, the auctioneers did not want to divulge who bought the property, but Bulletin has since been informed by a reliable source that it was Rinderknecht herself, who bought the property back. We have obtained documentation in relation to this and other happenings at the Resort and will be reporting on those in the weeks to come. Being no stranger to the courts and legal battles, in June of 2019, Rinderknecht appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s court on six charges relating to environmental violations committed over a period of 10 years. Each of the six charges potentially carried sentences
of either five years imprisonment or fines of up to R10 million. The State alleged that the accused [Rinderknecht] was guilty of contravening the National Environmental Management Act no 107. This charge was related to the expansion of the Hans Merensky Hotel, allegedly without the necessary environmental authorization. Rinderknecht pled guilty to this charge. Yesterday, Thursday the 10th of June, we took walk through the Letaba Boulevard. Though the building is still in an absolute abhorrent state, smells of urine and is rife with litter, it did appear as though some work had been done on the inside of the centre. A sign read “we apologize for any inconvenience caused due to the upgrade of the new Central mall Centre.” Since our visit to this building in 2019, there was certainly a lot less rubbish and human faeces in the dark corners of the structure, and two offices which were under construction at the time, appeared to have been completed. Other than that however, there were no major visible upgrades, and there was no security patrol as before. We have not been able to obtain any comment on the future of this building, but our archives can be viewed on www.farnorthbulletin.co.za to read the history of the building and our regular follow ups on the matter to date. This is a developing story which we have been investigating for the past five years. We will continue to keep our readers updated.
GTM paid four contractors for vegetation control Residents in Haenertsburg experienced black outs for five days straight this last week despite there being no bad weather in the area to blame. On Tuesday, one resident spoke to Bulletin about how this was affecting their restaurant and accommodation business. “This is insane. Today is day five without little to no
power in the village and there is no strong wind, no rain or bad weather to blame for it, but the municipality just cannot seem to get it right. The power comes on for a few minutes and then off again. And this has been going on for the last week. This is not just an inconvenience but a safety and security issue as well.” Bulletin was told that a contractor had been appointed to conduct bush and vegetation clearing along all the powerlines in the Haenertsburg area and that apparently this contractor was paid R11 million for the project. We sent our inquiries to Vutivi Bridegettes, communications officer at the GTM to clarify. “We’re aware of the power crisis in Haenertsburg , the electricity has not been completely off but residents may have experienced constant power cuts for the past four days due to the bad weather conditions, our electrical team is currently doing their best to deal with this crisis,” she said. “It is not true that R11 million was allocated for vegetation control at Haenertsburg. Only R671 333 was allocated for the Haenertsburg area. The allocation is to clear 48 651 kilometres of lines by four contractors. Vegetation clearing is ongoing, and we’ll be doing more as overgrown lines are identified. It should be noted that we are in the last month of the financial year and more allocations will be made in the new financial year.” Bulletin drove to the GTM’s main substation situated in the Tzaneen industrial area opposite Talana Hostel in Koedoe Street. There, we photographed a completely overgrown high-voltage pylon situated against the boundary wall of the substation. We sent the image to Bridgettes to explain. “The structure above (on the image) was an omission by a contractor and he has been instructed to go back and clean before he can receive payment,” she responded. Bulletin is left wondering, as many of our readers certainly are too, how many other oversights these contractors have made in areas not as visible to the public as this particular pylon at their main substation. We have asked for a list of these contractors which we will publish once received.

SA landfall for new Defender 90 ‘shorty’ ■ Roelof de Jonge
The new Land Rover Defender 110 was introduced in South Africa midway through 2020. Now the compact, short wheelbase Defender 90 has followed its Defender 110 sibling’s tracks with its launch in South Africa from the 1st of June. Available in South Africa now, the Defender 90 is regarded as the most capable and connected Land Rover to date and can trace its roots back to the original Series I model of 1948. The model range will consist out of the base Defender S, X-Dynamic, First Edition and top-of-the-range Defender X models, each sold with a choice of four engine options. Robustec is a protective and hard-wearing material inspired by textiles used in extreme outdoor activities and is used inside the Defender on areas that are subject to heightened wear. The Defender X-Dynamic is available with a choice of SE and HSE Specification Packs. On the range-topping X derivative, the gloss black inset contrast hood is standard along with Gloss Black claddings. To give further differentiation between the X and Core vehicles, the front and rear skid pans and other detailed exterior parts are coated in a Starlight Satin finish while the brake callipers are painted orange, the dashboard cross beam has a dark grey powder coat brushed finish and the door sill treadplates are illuminated with Defender script. The X model is also fitted, as standard, with air suspension along with an electronic active rear differential, configurable Terrain Response 2, a sliding panoramic roof, Matrix LED headlights, 14-way heated and cooled front seats, ClearSight interior rear-view mirror and a head-up display among others.
The Defender First Edition, available for one year from launch, is available in Pangea Green, Gondwana Stone or Hakuba Silver, with a folding fabric sunroof incorporated in the contrast white roof. Standard fare includes air suspension, 12-way heated seats, an electrically adjustable steering column ClearSight rear view mirror and 20-inch alloy wheels. The iconic 4x4 embraces the 21st century technologies and Land Rover’s Pivi infotainment, which features an intuitive interface and its own back-up battery for always-on responses, come as standard feature. Advanced software-over-the-air updates also ensure customers always benefit from the latest software, wherever they are in the world. The Configurable Terrain Response program allows drivers to set-up the vehicle to suit precise off-road conditions and surfaces when adventuring. The Terrain Response 2 system also includes a new Wade program which optimises all the vehicle’s systems accordingly to allow safe passage through water up to 900mm deep. At the South African launch, the Defender 90 line-up includes four engine options comprising of two diesel and two petrol units. The 2.0-litre D240 turbodiesel produces 177kW and 430Nm, enabling
the 0-100km/h sprint in 9 seconds with a top speed of 188km/h. The 2.0-litre P300 turbopetrol with 221kW and 400Nm achieves the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.1 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 191km/h. The more powerful 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder options include a P400 petrol featuring Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology with outputs of 294kW and 550Nm, and a D300 diesel with 221kW and with a torque figure of 650Nm. These two models accelerate from 0-100 in 6 and 6.7 seconds respectively, with top speeds of 191km/h for both.
All-new Kia Sportage designed to inspire ■ Roelof de Jonge The Kia Corporation has on the 8th of June revealed the official images of the all-new Sportage, an SUV that has been crafted with the mindset to inspire customers with its interior and exterior design. The exterior challenges design norms and moves the Sportage identity into the next generation, while paying
homage to its rich heritage. Kia described the design of the new Sportage as tense with crisp lines that ripple along its refined body, amplifying the dramatic styling tensions. At the same time, the clean but muscular surfaces join forces with intricate graphics to give the new Sportage a dynamic and assertive road presence. On the inside, a space has been created that is truly state-of-the-art, fusing high-tech sensibilities into contemporary style. The side profile of the all-new Sportage stays true to
its sports utility DNA, with taut lines cutting across clean but refined body surfaces that seamlessly blends the contrasting volumes together. Representing a first for the Sportage range, a black roof which is a different colour paint option to the vehicle’s body, is now available with the new model. This paint feature is to emphasize the sporting profile of the new Sportage. At the rear, the all-new Sportage maintains its strong road presence with its broad shoulders, allowing the SUV to represent strength and stability. The razor rear lamps are connected by a slim horizontal design, giving the all-new Sportage a wide impression from the back. The interior plays with boldness in character, offering intuitive and innovativeness through technology which creates a driver-orientated space that is truly state-of-the-art. A sculpted integrated curved display with a slim crush touchscreen pad and exquisitely detailed air vents forms the core of the cabin. The touchscreen pad along with the advanced integrated controller act as the nerve centre for driver and passenger connectivity, functionality and usability needs. Both these systems have been
created to be easy-to-use, highly intuitive and soft to touch. The driver and front passenger seats combine high-tech with comfort in a sporting slim shell design. Further to enhance passenger convenience, at the rear of the driver and front passenger seats are integrated hanger-type designs within the slim headrests, allowing clothing and handbags to be easily and conveniently hooked into place. The interior space is shrouded in a clever combination of practicality, functionality and versatility. For the first time in the Sportage’s history, a bolder model has been specifically designed to convey a more confident, vigorous and versatile character. The all-new Sportage X-Line features a unique bumper, side sill and curved roof rack. On the inside, customers can choose between a signature sage green or black for the seating, as well as bold quilting and black metal wood to further bring to life the model’s confident persona. Due for global market launch later this year, more information on the all-new Sportage will be made available in due course. The all-new Kia Sportage’s South African availability has not been confirmed yet.

Second Boeing 727 passes by Tzaneen ■ Joe Dreyer Bulletin Country was abuzz yesterday (Thursday the 10th of June) at the news that a Boeing 727 would be passing through their town enroute to it’s new home in Hoedspruit. The plane, or at least the body of the plane minus the wings and other appendages was transported by the specialist haulers at PMunro Transport from the OR International Airport in Gauteng, to it’s final destination at the one-ofkind Aerotel in Hoedspruit. It took more than 200 wheels to transport the flightless bird in a journey that started on the 21st of May in Kempton Park and concluded this weekend more than 500 kilometres later. The plane did not however pass-through Tzaneen town as it would not fit beneath the bridge over the R71 and so a detour was taken via the Deerpark Road. The Aerotel project is the idea
and brainchild of Martin den Dunnen and wife Tracy den Dunnen. Martin, a businessman, pilot and property developer from Hoedspruit and his wife, Tracy, had a dream and the passion to restore dignity to a retired airliner aircraft that usually end their career in airport graveyards. In March 2019, they realized their dream and acquired the first of their aircraft which they named Bill after it’s tail number ZS-BIL. Bill departed from the DENEL grounds on the 5th of May that year and travelled nine days by road to Hoedspruit. A few months later, Aerotel was born. Two years later almost to the day, the Den Dunnen’s acquired their second aircraft which will join Bill in Hoedspruit as part of phase two of the couple’s expansion plans. While we were not able to speak to Tracy or Martin this week, we will have a full story in next week’s Bulletin.
The Boening passed through the Deerpark valley yesterday (Thursday the 10th of June) much to the delight of local onlookers.

Young Corona gives centenary Comrades the boot ■ Roelof de Jonge This coming Sunday, the 13th of June, athletes from Tzaneen will join fellow long distance runners from across the country, and indeed the globe, in the 2021 edition of the virtual Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge. This year’s virtual race will be similar to last year’s Comrades Ultra Marathon event where local runners like Cor van Heyningen from Tzaneen Marathon Club completed the 90km distance race making use of local routes. “It is disappointing not to be able to compete in the actual Comrades race again this year, but some things are what they are, and we have to at times accept what we cannot change and just adapt,” van Heyningen said. “With regards to Sunday’s virtual race, I will again compete in the 90km event and will be accompanied and supported by friends and family along the route. I am looking forward to running and will start at 06:00 on Sunday morning. I believe my fitness regime has me well prepared for this year’s event.” To recap what the virtual edition of the Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge entails, the routes and distance can be from anywhere in the world. Athletes must simply the course of their choice and participate on the chosen route. Whether it be on your property, a treadmill or on public roads. Athletes can compete in different distances ranging from 5km to 10km, 21.1km, 45km and then the real beast; the 90km. On Friday the 4th of June, Cheryl Winn, the Comrades Ultra Marathon Association chairperson, announced the rules and the virtual marathon to the hordes of disappointed athletes who were looking forward to competing in an actual race in celebration of the Comrades’ one hundredth birthday. “It came as a great disappointment last year, when amongst all the other deprivations,
the isolation, loss of life, livelihoods, liberties, and quality of life, the 2020 Comrades Marathon was brought to a halt by a microscopic virus for the first time in 75 years,” explained Winn. “It was an even more devastating blow to cancel the 2021 Comrades Marathon in our Centenary Year. It gives us great hope though, to see major international marathons such as the London, New York and Boston Marathons opening up later this year and a number of events such as the SA Track and Field Junior and Senior Championships amongst others.” She went on to say that she was hopeful for a return to some sort of normality for the sport, especially given the current vaccine roll-out campaigns. “Instead, we will be staging the Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge, a virtual event, on Sunday the 13th of June, the date on which the 2021 Comrades Marathon race was originally scheduled”. She made a call on all Comrades Marathon runners, family members, friends and supporters to personally participate in the Centenary Celebrations over a distance of their choice. “Come and experience the camaraderie of the Ultimate Human Race vicariously along with tens of thousands of runners in towns, villages, cities and rural areas throughout South Africa and the world.” The runners will receive a limited-edition commemorative t-shirt and upon completion of their respective race, an extremely attractive genuine Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge Medal, which is destined to become a collector’s item according to Winn. “This is not your average virtual event, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a historical Centenary Celebration, while contributing towards ensuring the future sustainability of the Ultimate Human Race.” The entry fees for the various distances are R100 (5km), R150 (10km) and R400 for the 21,1km, 45km and 90km virtual races.
