BIG BOOM IN LITTLE ROOM
This Monday morning at around 11:30 residents of Premier Park were literally shaken by a massive explosion coming from the block of flats next to Sugarhill. Whilst nobody knows exactly what happened and nobody is naming names, what we do know is that the entire apartment was destroyed. Read inside.

The four men who built the great wall of shame in front of the entrance to the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipal (BPM) buildings two weeks ago, were subsequently arrested. This after a case of intimidation and damage to infrastructure was opened against them by the mayor, Merriam Malatji. A group calling themselves the “Concerned Businesspeople” bricked up the access gate to the BPM offices and made unconfirmed allegations against the municipality’s Malatji linking her to corrupt dealings involving the awarding of tenders. When Bulletin spoke to the mayor, she said that she had issued a directive to her colleagues to open a case with the police, as what had been done was illegal. The debacle of the concerned businesspeople begun when the BPM advertised a tender for bush clearing which was also advertised by the Mopani District Municipality (MDM). It came to be that ahead of the closing date of the BPM’s tender, a company had already been employed by the district municipality for the same job. This was when the Concerned Businesspeople group shouted foul and subsequently called meetings with the high-ranking officials from the BPM. Those meetings were reportedly not fruitful as the Concerned Businesspeople decided to erect their wall and vowed to stop all activities in the municipality until they could speak to higher officials within the municipality and not “politicians”.

A 38-year employee of one of the retailers in Tzaneen was hospitalized after an explosion in his apartment at Vermont flats in Premier Park. The police said that the explosion occurred on Monday at around 11:30. The explosion completely destroyed the tiny apartment including the furniture and blew out all the windows. No other residents were injured and the cause of the explosion has still not been determined. The police are investigating and have opened an inquest docket.
An extreme case of animal neglect has made its way through Hoedspruit, causing the community to call for more action to help neglected animals and punish perpetrators. This comes after 10 puppies, which are reported to have been about 10 days old when they were dumped, were spotted by a Protrack ranger in the bush along side the R40 road in Hoedspruit on Sunday, the 15th of August. The puppies were collected by the Rhino Task Team rangers and taken to Janine Meufells, a veterinarian in Hoedspruit. Meufells posted on Facebook condemning the act; “to the person who dumped these approximately 10 days old, presumably Malinois cross, puppies on the side of the R40 last night without any protection: they were rescued this morning by the Protrack Rhino Task Team; cold, hungry, and dehydrated and are now cared for and are getting the love they deserve.” Bulletin contacted Meufells and she informed us that her and a couple of other ladies would take turns in caring for the puppies for the next few weeks, as they require constant feeding every three hours, and after that they will be by her care. She also mentioned that due their conditions, they could tell that the puppies were recently separated from their mother, as they were a little dehydrated and some had not yet opened their eyes or even started crawling. The three animal lovers who will be looking after the ‘abandoned 10’ compromise of a dog trainer, and two vets. In a conversation with Bulletin, they said that it angered and saddened them that people would do something like that. “There are plenty of great organizations in the area like HALO

or PAWS. Rather surrender them to these organizations or make a post somewhere stating that you cannot take care of them and need help”. This was another reason people should neuter or spay their pets. The puppies could have likely died from either starvation, the cold, or eaten by predators had they not been found on time. “We will be looking for suited homes in time. As they are getting hand-reared which is not ideal, we will for now limit the number of people and will allow people to come have a look when they are able to interact and when we get a bit of an idea about their individual characters.” The team is also appealing to anyone who could assist in donations for the ‘abandoned 10’ that would go towards rearing costs (milk, vaccinations, etc) and blankets and towels. If you are one of those who would like to donate, you may donate to Provet with the reference, ‘R40 puppies’ as the money will be used for the litter and any excess will be donated to local organizations to support their ongoing rescues and to give communities the opportunity to spay/neuter their dogs. The community of Hoedspruit also wanted to extend their special thanks to Janine Meuffels for taking on the responsibility, Debbie English from Provet Veterinary Clinic, and Simone Troskie from Kilo9 Kennels, for supporting her in raising the pups. infrastructure and intimidation. “Their actions caused disruptions to the services of the municipality since the employees were not allowed to enter and the community were also restricted to access the building for different services,” said Mongwe. The four appeared at the Phalaborwa Magistrate court on Monday last week, 10th of August, and were all released on bail at an amount of R1 000 each. Iconic Barnyard Theatre takes a final bow ■ Roelof de Jonge One of the region’s iconic structures was demolished this month. The Barnyard Lakeside Theatre at Stanford Lake College will be no more after the dismantling of the historic venue commenced on the 17th of August. After exhausting all avenues and despite every best effort, the school was unable to obtain a fire safety certificate from the fire department and they were left with no other option but to tear the building down. Bulletin spoke to the school’s headmaster, Alan Redfern, on his feelings about the demise of the Barnyard. “It is with sadness that we learned about the dismantling of the Barnyard Lakeside Theatre. We are truly sad about this landmark being no more,” he said. “The Barnyard has become an iconic building, not only for all Stanfordians, but for many members of this community. At a time when our community was crying out for a venue that could host cultural events, the Barnyard was erected on the banks of Lakeside and served a valuable purpose.” The Barnyard was born after Haenertsburg hosted a packed-out Autumn Festival in 1999, which saw the likes of the National Symphony Orchestra perform. At the time, Stanford Lake College or Stanford College as it was known then, did not have a hall. Howard Blight, as the chairperson of the school had the vision of building a multi-purpose hall on the campus. Coincidentally, around this time, he was invited to the opening of the Barnyard Theatre in White River and made acquaintance with a gentleman called Louis Möller, the franchiser of the Barnyard Theatre concept. The following day, Blight and Rudi Schoeman flew Möller to Stanford Lake College to discuss the viability of such a project. Möller and his wife, Sybil, started the very first Barnyard Theatre as a concept back in 1996 on their dairy farm just outside Plettenberg Bay. The couple had both been involved in the performing arts most of their lives, with Louis as co-founder and producer of, amongst others, Carte Blanche, and Sybil (Coetzee) as a freelance actress and TV presenter. The concept was then franchised, and theatres soon mushroomed in Mossel Bay and White River, with another four planned for Gauteng at the time. It was agreed that the Barnyard Theatre concept would be ideal to meet the needs of the Haenerts-

burg community as well as the school. Soon pilot performances were held in a makeshift venue at the hangar at Stevens Lumber Mill. The performances, one in December 1999 and one in March 2000, were so well supported with the “Full House” sign going up and people being turned away from the March performance. These packed events gave the greenlight for the Standofrd Lake project to be set in motion and two years later saw the grand opening of the 330-seat Barnyard Lakeside Theatre. The interim board of directors were comprised of Louis Möller, Pam Oberholzer, Jeanette Barnard, John Hudson, Rudi Schoeman and Howard Blight.

Many shows were held, and famous artists such as Bok van Blerk, Dozi, Nianell, Judy Page, Clint & Co. and pianist and comedian Ian von Memerty performed in this landmark venue. A big Afrikaans music festival was also held on the property which saw artists such as Valiant Swart, Gert Vlok Nel and Anton Goosen make their appearances. The Barnyard also hosted shows like Roll Over Beethoven and Rock Around the Clock. In more recent times, Martin Bester performed in 2018 as part of his, “Vir die liefde” tour. “It was a space filled with laughter and merriment, music and fun. A venue for us as a school and com-
munity to celebrate our achievers, remind ourselves of our shared values and spending many shared hours together as a school,” continued Redfern. “In the immediate short term, the space will be used to enhance our Adventure activities and improve our outdoor facilities. There are many ideas for what we could use the space for in years to come, one of them being to build a small chapel. Whilst we are all very sad to see the grand old lady come down, as a community we look forward to the future and are optimistic that in taking this unfortunate, but necessary step, we will be able to further develop the facilities on our campus.”

Letaba Estates urges all to get staff vaccinated
ANC Ward Councillor candidates announced
■ Jeff Jackson

African Realty Trust trading as Letaba Estates and Letaba Citrus Processors is urging local businesses to assist their employees to become vaccinated. The influx of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa has been a concern for government and business alike. To alleviate the spread of the pandemic, African Realty Trust (Pty) ltd (ART) in conjunction with the local Department of Health has initiated vaccination drives on its premises. The first drive on the 29th of July saw 580 people get vaccinated while the MEC of Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, was not only present but also administered some of the vaccinations. The next drive on the 6th of August saw a further 475 employees vaccinated. “We, as a company, want to be proactive in assisting our staff and community to get vaccinated, in order to cater for a healthy workforce,” commented Andries van Wyngaardt, Group Chief Executive of ART. “This is a good example of how business can assist government in achieving their goals. Dr Phophi Ramathuba pointed out that for us to go back to normal life, the country should reach herd immunity which will enable the economy
to revert to full operation and vaccinating people in congregated environments is one such effort.” Local businesses that want to do the same can contact the communication officer of Letaba Hospital, Curry Letsoalo, on 082 788 9385.
Most of the ANC candidates for the upcoming local government elections presented to different communities last week to be interviewed and voted for, were the youths. Councillors who already served their terms in office were not re-elected while others joined the proportional lists. The final decision will be taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC). This comes as parties gear themselves to submit their candidates to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) next week Monday, for verification before being placed on the voters’ roll. Shortly after Cogta Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, proclaimed and Gazetted the elections for the 27th of October this year, both the parties and the IEC started with programmes for the elections. Mopani was no exception as after the message was sent to branches that candidates should be taken to communities as soon as possible, meetings were called at schools and halls to present the four names of the candidates. They were interviewed on Sunday and the following day residents appearing on the voter’s rolls were called to vote for the councillor of their choice. At Khujwana in ward 18, presentations and voting took place at Matimu High School. After voting was completed at 18:00 preliminary results were announced by the party agents per each voting station. While some candidates disappeared immediately, others started to celebrate until long into the night. Ironically, some celebrations were held in
front of the gates of the losers – and way past curfew. In the Lesedi cluster of the GTM, Collen Stolz, won ward 16 which includes Khujwana South and Segabeng, while Caiphus Mabitsela won ward 31 which includes Lenyenye and Kuwait. Sophy Raganya retained ward 32, Norman Mkansi retained ward 18 which includes Dan village and Khujwana North while in Pharare and Lephepane, the status quo remained subject to approval by the NEC. After the names were voted into by the community, they were sent to the regional office which, after assessing, referred the documents to the extended Provincial Executive Committees (PEC) for vetting before the names are sent to Luthuli House. Both the list of the ward and PR councillors will be approved in line with rule 6 of the party constitution promoting gender equity. The proportional list contains strategic positions such as the mayorship. On Tuesday, the Limpopo PEC met to discuss the appointment of mayors for the municipalities. Though the number one name on the list is the mayor, the party demanded that three names be sent to determine the appointee. ANC acting Secretary General, Jessie Duarte, said that the extended National Working Committee (NWC) will meet on Saturday to approve the 10 000 names of both ward and PR councillors before they are submitted to the IEC on Monday, the 23rd of August. She added that the party will be supporting the IEC in their bid to have the elections postponed this week.
Update: Closed hydrants cause water shortages ■ Jeff Jackson The closure of water hydrants in Tzaneen has hit communities hard. Residents of Nkowankowa unit E, Mokgoloboto and the Western side of Dan village accused their councillors of putting politics first while the communities they are serving have gone for days without water. This after the main pipeline connected at the reservoir at Dan village burst, leaving residents without water for several days. According to community members they started experiencing water shortages as of Friday afternoon and the problem continued until Wednesday morning. They complained that councillors and ward committee members (all of whom are members of the ANC) could not attend to the crisis because they were busy campaigning for re-election. Mavis Mlondovozi, a resident of Nkowankowa unit E said that “when the taps ran dry we thought that it was just a temporary measure because whenever there are water supply interruptions the community is informed through their representatives in the ward committees. When, on Saturday evening, there was still no water we started asking for water from the operators and nobody was available. We could not wash school uniforms for our children.” She said that the problem was caused by a burst pipe at Letaba cross bridge which supplies the communities of Mokgoloboto, Nkowankowa unit D, Stocks, and Dan village with water. She complained that when there is no water in the vicinity, the municipality sends water tankers to supply residents with water but this time it was not the case which is the concern of the community. Another resident, Philemon Monyepao, said
though it was not a manmade crisis residents were supposed to be supplied with water trucks in order to alleviate the problem of water in the village. “That there was nobody to respond when the community needed answers had left many people asking each other if they did the right thing by voting for the new councillors.” A member of the ward committee who could not be named said that the problem with water trucks not able to come to help the situation is because the trucks were no longer allowed to draw water in Tzaneen and therefore, they had been parked. The four trucks that the district municipality had offered to assist in Tzaneen are insufficient for the four clusters of Tzaneen. The closing of roads by residents of Khujwana in ward 18 stopped after residents met with the councillor and resolved the matter. Last week water supply was disrupted when the new contractor was disconnecting the illegal water connections so that water could have pressure when pumped into the reservoir thus forcing residents to close the main road. The project is nearing completion. ***Editor’s Comment: It is not true that water tankers are prohibited from drawing water from hydrants in Tzaneen. An agreement was entered into between the GTM and the group of private water tankers. One distribution point has been made available for these truckers to draw water from and they agreed to pay per kilolitre. The problem here is the lack of proper infrastructure which is why there are water shortages in the outlying areas. The government caused this problem many years ago through lack of proper planning. Water tankers are always meant to be a temporary solution.

Letaba launches pure homegrown goodness ■ Letaba Estates For more than a century African Realty Trust has helped nourish the local community as an integral part of the province of Limpopo. Even more so in fact, as part of the Tropical Paradise of the North which is the Greater Tzaneen area. The abundance of fresh produce in the area has given rise to two new products direct from their citrus groves to your tastebuds, namely a new Letaba Valencia Orange Squash and the one hundred percent pure Letaba Lemon Juice. Both products are grown, produced, bottled and labelled on home soil at the same site which validates the claim that they are truly bringing nature’s goodness straight from the soil to the shelf. African Realty Trust has been a part of the local community since 1902 and according to Group Chief Executive, Andries van Wyngaardt, the launch of these two new products will be a leap ahead for the local producers. “The Letaba brand has been part of the fabric of the province for many years. Our juice concentrates are an everyday staple in many homes and the addition of these two new products, allows us to extend our reach not only in Tzaneen but across the province and possibly nationally.” Both the Valencia Orange Squash and the 100% pure Lemon Juice are the result of many months of research and development and were only approved for launch once the exact balance between taste and value had been achieved. Feedback from test groups proved very positive. The Letaba Lemon Juice is derived from the Eureka variant which is grown and juiced on the banks of the mighty Letaba River. What sets the Letaba product apart from the other similar products is that it is produced from
fresh lemon juice and not from lemon concentrate which makes it packed full of flavour and an abundance of natural vitamin C. Initially the product will be available in 500ml bottles with plans to expand the range and include larger volumes for the hospitality industry. Like the Lemon Juice, the widely popular Valencia Orange Squash is derived from the Valencia oranges which are grown on the same Letaba farm. Valencia’s are valued for their high juice content and availability outside the typical citrus season which have placed them at the top of the “best for juicing” scale. The fruit is grown and picked on Letaba Estates after which it is transported to the Letaba Citrus Processors plant where it is processed, bottled and labelled, before being shipped to customers. “These two products are the first step in taking the Letaba brand to the rest of the province and country – and we know that they will take a bit of the sunshine and goodness that is common to the area with them wherever they go,” concluded van Wyngaardt. Both the Lemon Juice and the Valencia Orange Squash products are already available in many retail outlets in Tzaneen and across Limpopo and Mpumalanga. As part of the launch specials in Tzaneen, consumers can pay a visit to Premjee Cash and Carry, both the OK Sugar Stores, Letsitele Spar, Modjadjiskloof Spar or Tzaneen SuperSpar where they will receive a free bottle of Letaba 100% Lemon Juice when they purchase two bottles of Letaba Valencia Orange Squash for just R50. This will be a limited time offering so be sure to head to your nearest participating retailer before it’s too late. For more information on these products or to inquire about Letaba’s other offerings, feel free to visit their website at www.letaba.com .

IN THE CHAIR WITH DR RUAN RADEMEYER
Periodontal disease Periodontal disease and its effect on the mouth and body. In our previous article we discussed Gum disease. This week we will touch on what happens if we neglect our oral hygiene and leave a simple Gingivitis (gum infection) untreated. If a Gingivitis is left untreated the infection can spread to the bone supporting the teeth, causing what is called a Periodontitis. It is caused by bacteria that have been allowed to accumulate around your teeth and gums. A Periodontitis is a serious condition that damages the gums and without treatment it can damage the bone around the teeth, causing teeth to loosen or even complete tooth loss. The bone lost due to Periodontitis, is irreversible and there is no way to get it back. The best we can do is to stop further bone loss. It is a common condition and is mostly caused by poor Oral hygiene. Symptoms of a Periodontitis include the following: • Tender red and swollen gums that bleed easily. • Gums bleed when brushing teeth.
• • • •
Bad breath and a foul taste in the mouth. Teeth become loose and are moving. Chewing is painful. Teeth look longer because the gums have moved down known as Receding Gums. • Changes in the position of your teeth. There are also several risk factors that may put you at a higher risk for developing Periodontitis, including: • Smoking. • Type 2 Diabetes. • Obesity. • Immune Conditions like Leukaemia or HIV. • Medications that decrease Saliva flow and cause dry mouth. • Genetics. • Poor nutrition, including Vitamin C deficiency. As mentioned, Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, but more important than that, is the effect on the rest of your body. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gums and spread to the rest of your body. There are strong links between Periodonti-
tis and Heart Disease, Lung disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and controlling blood sugar in Diabetes. Prevention is the best form of treatment for any form of Gum Disease, especially Periodontitis. A patient needs to practice good Oral Hygiene from an early age and continue practicing throughout life. I recommend the following: • Brush your teeth twice daily in the morning and in the evening before going to bed and floss at least once per day. • Visit your Dentist every 6 to 12 months for a complete examination and a professional clean. • If you have risk factors that increase your chances of developing a Periodontitis, such as dry mouth, smoking, diabetes, you may need more frequent professional cleaning. I hope you found this article helpful. Please join us again in two weeks when we will discuss another Dental topic to help you increase your Dental knowledge. Dr Ruan Rademeyer

National Aerobatics championships hit Phalaborwa ■ Joe Dreyer The best aerobatic pilots in the country have all gathered at the Phalaborwa airfield for the 2021 National Aerobatics Championship and it promises to be an absolute showcase for aircraft lovers. Due to the covid regulations strict measures were put in place to ensure the safety of all participants and the general public. Thankfully, with Phalaborwa being such a small community and most of the aerobatics taking place high above ground, residents can treat themselves to a spectacular display by simply stepping outside their front doors. The pilots for the event arrived in Phalaborwa on Friday the 13th of August and spent the weekend and the Monday and Tuesday afternoons settling in with a few practice-runs in between. The influx of tourists to the town and the boost this offered the local economy can never be downplayed and highlights the importance of promoting more of these types of national events. Spectators will be allowed in a designated area on the airport premises with R50.00 entry fees for persons 13 years and older, and R25.00 for children 12 years and younger. Masks must be worn at all times. The gates opened on Wednesday and Thursday this week at 09:00 in the morning and this afternoon and tomorrow (Saturday) the gates will be opened at 08:00. Saturday is regarded as the unofficial highlight of the week with some of the top pilots having a surprise performance in store to close off the competition. Parking is not allowed inside the airport itself and spectators are reminded to bring their own chairs, umbrellas, gazebo’s and sunscreen. Food stalls will be available and there will be a beer garden today and tomorrow from 10:00 to 20:00. Bulletin spent some time at the airfield on Wednesday while the pilots were completing the last of their practice sessions and the show started. We spoke to one of the veterans in the sport, Glen Warden. Warden is a British Airways Comair Boeing 737 Training Captain with over 14 000 flying hours, a former fighter pilot who flew the Aermacchi MB-326, Mirage and Cheetah jet aircraft for the South African Airforce and he is an active member of the South African Air Force Museum displaying the Mirage CZ III, the Vampire T11 and the T6 Harvard. Warden was also the leader of the acclaimed Goodyear Eagles. He is one of the pilots Phalaborwa locals can look forward to seeing zipping through the skies the next few days. Bulletin will be at the event this weekend and will publish the results and a brief chat with Warden and other pilots, including local airman Ingmar Bezuidenhout, in our next edition.
Pilot Warren Eva in his Yak 52 competes in the Sportsman class.
Dicky Maritz competes in the Sportsman class with his Decathlon.
Glen Warden doing his practice run in the skies above Phalaborwa.
Elton Bondi on the runway in his Extra 300 competing in the Advanced class.
Kayle Wooll competes in the Advanced class in his Extra 330LX .

New president for Tzaneen Bowls Club ■ Roelof de Jonge
Tzaneen Bowls Club, like numerous amateur and social clubs, also had to bend the knee financially and see club members dwindle. This is the effect the various Covid-19 lock downs imposed on clubs had thus far. The staunch players and members of this club however were adamant to turn the club’s fortunes around through continued matches and tournaments. This week, on Saturday the 14th of August, the club elected its new management. The newly elected management already have their eyes set on some exciting new plans to help revive the club’s membership and to lure younger players into the sport. Under the leadership of new president Ally Morrison and his new committee, the Tzaneen Bowls Club is in for some exciting times ahead. Ally Morrison was The new elected members who will be elected as the new supporting Morrison are Stoffel Vermaak president of Tzaneen (vice-president), Elsje Beyer (secretary), Bowls Club. Phalaborwa boasts another Olympian ■ Billy Sibuyi “I can now say I am on track to being the best in Phalaborwa.” These were the words of the 34-year-old Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games athlete Ranti Marvin Dikgale, who represented team South Africa during the Olympics in Tokyo this year. The Olympic athlete said he was inspired by a lot of people from Phalaborwa to keep running and said that it was a dream come true to compete in the Olympics albeit he had already competed in the world championship in Yokohama in 2019. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, Merriam Malatji, welcomed the Namakgale born athlete on Monday, 16th of August, at the mayor’s parlour after he returned from Tokyo last week Monday. Dikgale, a former student at Sebalamakgolo High School and a product of Ba-Phalaborwa School Sport, represented team South Africa for the 4X 400M relay athletics. His team didn’t make it through to the final. Malatji congratulated Dikgale for representing Phalaborwa town. “It was not you who was there but the whole Phalaborwa. You are doing this when we need more motivation,” she said. “We appreciate your hard work and your continuation of being a role model to our youth. You are actually encouraging our youth, that all is possible no matter where you come from.” The mayor committed herself to assist him
with sports gear and other sporting logistical needs. “My encouragement to the youth in Phalaborwa is that they should stay away from the streets, start doing what is good, focus on schoolwork, and do sport as this will make Phalaborwa shine again. The youth in Phalaborwa must commit to sports so that together we will do great things,” said the Olympian. “As I am speaking to you now, a man from Foskor, Hulisani Nemaxwi, has just sorted out one of my challenges of accommodation and I am so happy. To the community of Ba-Phalaborwa, I am so happy that I met somebody like the mayor because everything is now falling into place, all my stress is gone, I believe I will do better and make everybody happy,” he concluded. The mayor also used the opportunity to announce that Mashishimale Sport Ground is complete and is expected to be officially opened soon. “We also like to announce that we are busy renovating Namakgale Stadium while Selwane Stadium is almost complete. This is an integral part of re-igniting sport and recreational development in Phalaborwa,” she concluded. ***Editor’s Comment: Pity that the mayor herself was not inspired to work harder and be more committed to the service of her community as this fine young athlete. It is encouraging that an Olympian could rise from the ashes of what once was a jewel in the Limpopo province’s crown. Well done Ranti, we are proud of you. Perhaps sport is truly the only hope left, unless the coming elections sees a complete disinfection of the municipal offices.
The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality congratulated Ranti Marvin Dikgale on his achievements at the Olympics.

Hierdie geleentheid was by die Tzaneen Buiteklub aangebied.
